Stopped by Tank Fish and Chippery on a warm spring day. Loved the blue theme and the clean, fresh vibe.
๐ดvery fresh fish, grilled fish was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Tank for 2 was good way to taste everything, very filling even between 2 people. Downside is it is more expensive than most other fish and chip places but the ingredients and fish are good quality.
๐๐ผโโ๏ธ staff were excellent. No complaints.
Great quality seafood but I was most impressed with the variety and quality of the healthy side dishes to go with it.ย
Salads all looked delicious, went for the broccoli, beetroot and feta combo which was well seasoned and the perfect texture with some pine nuts on top. For the seafood, the fried fish was good, as was the calamari. Couldn't resist a potato cake and I'm glad I did because it was moreish with great batter and a nice thickness.
Always passed this place but never went inside. So, decided to change that today. And I'm glad I went inside. The perfect fish and chips I've had. And a great experience for a first timer. The batter was crispy and light. The fish was soft and flaky. Although there was a teeny tiny little bit of extra oil on my second piece, didn't mind that.
The chips were seasoned perfectly and not soggy. The tartar sauce was deeeeelicious. And the staff were friendly to the max! Overall 10/10 experience for me. Would come back again... and again... and again.
Was in the area and was simply CRAVING fish and chips, Saw these guys on social media and knew I had to drop by. Everything was fresh and tasted fantastic. Top place.
One of my favorite fish & chip places within Melbourne! Flake and calamari are damn good and tasty! Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Chips were chinky and crunchy too. Generous servings and reasonable prices.
Highly recommended!
One of the BEST fish and chip burgers in Melbourne. I tried their special Surf and Turf burger and this bad boy was legit! Wagyu beef cooked perfectly, quality cheese and the prawn were nice and soft. With the touch of spicey sauce to finish off, this burger is one of the best in Carlton and is up there with the best in Melbourne. Big Fan! Add them to your list!
Freshly made fish with crunchy chips. Nice clean bright little place. I usually get the fish of the day and it never disappoints. Grilled is the best.
The only downside is that the portions are a bit small lol
A very simple fish and chips combo, to my surprise, every thing on the plate was cripy and extremely fresh. The shape of the fish fillet is not flat as what fish was usually done in other stores. Although fish was batterd, the batter is thin, which makes the fillet chruncy from outside, soft and fresh from the inside. Chips is cripsy but lacks seasoning. It would be perfect if more sauces or seasoning other than only venigar and salt available on the table.
Nice fish and chips and other seafood here with a clean layout, though portions are a bit small for the price so that's a bit of a turn off. Their seafood is definitely on the finer side, and more carefully prepared than your typical fish and chippery. The salt and pepper calamari in particular is very tasty with crumbs of fried greens and chilli bits. However, be prepared to pay more than the usual for a hearty meal.
The food here is usually very good and tonight's take away was no exception. Our chips were perfect and not oily, grilled barramundi was great and my fish burger was just right with the right amount of mayo and slaw. Our dim sims however were reminiscent those bought in bulk packs with little flavour and a tough pastry. Not sure if they had an off night, but the service was not friendly as usual and the dine in area didn't look as clean as it could have been with benches and tables needing a wipe down. As I looked around the restaurant I did notice that it's in need of a really good clean and a refresh as a lot of the furniture is beginning to look a little well worn. Good for take away but not for dining in.
My friend and I ordered the usual Tank for Two. Priced at $37, it consists of 2 portions of fish (grilled or bartered), chips, potato cakes, calamari and dim sims. We went with grilled fish instead of battered this time round and it was really delicious. Another star of this dish is definitely their homemade potato cakes - warm and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Overall, we were really satisfied with the quality of the meal.
The food here is simply awesome! I ordered half a dozen of oysters, calamari salad and calamari with chips. The oysters are fresh and the calamari is yummy.
Great food. Best fish and chips Iโve had in a long time. Service was great and everything was fresh. Potato cake is fantastic!! A must go if youโre in the area.
Solid fish and chips. Batter was light and crisp, holds its shape without falling apart. Tartare sauce was very delicious - bonus being made in house.
Probably one of the highest quality fish and chips fix for a reasonable price. Would prefer if the batter did not have that hint of yeast taste.
Really well-cooked chips here - crunchy outside and soft inside. The fish is also cooked well and is nice and tender when served. The presentation of the food is nicer than your usual fish and chips joint, and the interior of this place is really well-decorated. The only downfall of this place is that the portions could be slightly larger for their price.
Simply delicious! ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐my daughter and I both loved this.
Food was so delicious. Plus it was the first time Iโve ever eaten fish and chips and not felt unwell afterwards. Highly recommend the calamari and the chips. Those seasonings!!! Yum!
After eating at the Carlton branch i was expected a higher standard for this outlet. Ordered the calamari roll and fish and chips. Generally ok for food court standard...
Really good fish and chips. It's a little on the pricey side, but so is everything in that area. The seasoning salt they use is delicious and the fish is always fresh. Great place to sit outside when it's sunny.
Looking for a snack or a meal with fresh fish and chips right near the CBD? On lygon street @tankfishchips is the fish and chippery that you must visit! With an extensive menu ranging from your classic fish and chips to Wagyu burgers and a range of salads this restaurant will definetly meet your needs and the needs of your belly! Featured here are the old skool fish and chips which is perfect for a quick after uni snack. So what are you fishing for? You'll be hooked ๐
We bought 1 x catch of the day, 1 x grilled barramundi, 1 tank pack consisted 1catch of the day fish, chips, tarter sauces & 1 lemon wedge.
Overall, fishes are cooked from fresh rather than frozen as like many typical fish and chips shop, but I would rate it's a gourmet fish & chip food which you won't have it everyday given the price is $$.
The serve of the chips in the tank pack is not as generous, I would suggest if you share with kids order another serve of chips alone.
Staffs very helpful and attentive.
To be honest, i was looking for fish and chip. But there was different things to try. ย Other than the great food, the furniture was a little bit worn out.

so I only come here for the Wagyu beef burger which is by far the best burger I've had and i LOVE my burgers! I've bought a lot of friends here to try the burgers and they too agree, unfortunately it has been taken off the menu which is quite dissapointing. I have tried the cheeseburger version which is not even close. other items on the menu are great too, ive had the fish and chips, other burgers and some salad options. One small request - please bring back the Wagyu beef burger!!
Dropped by after work for a bite with the family after reading all the reviews. Great food and menu selection but the customer service was a bit lacking and a bit pricey - $2.40 p/calamari?! Yikes!
Very nice food though!
Dropped by this place due to its proximity to the Melbourne Museum. Food is tasty and fresh... not what you'd find in a local fish and chip shop - definitely recommend the addition of the salads although the store is lacking in any sort of AC which makes warm weather visits unbearable. Customer service is average - okay... could be more accommodating / friendly.
This is not your corner store fish and chip shop. Tank is fresh and fancy. The regular catch of the day is always tasty and they do a excellent wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce. You can order on a few food delivery apps but also if you want to eat in there are plenty of seats inside and outside. There's also a really nice park across the road for hot summer days and nights.
The place is very cosy and the staff is very friendly. The food?
It's nicely presented and has a good value for $15. The taste is kinda average and a bit too salty.

Fish and chips can bring back many fond memories, whether thatโs of weekends away, warm summer days, or takeaway at home enjoyed with friends or family. What most people may not know is that the seafood served at most fish and chipperies are frozen. Hoping to turn that trend around is Bill Makris, owner of Tank Fish and Chippery.
The "healthy" fish and chip store concept has been around for a while - with the likes of Hunky Dory, Hooked andย Saltwaterย Grillย entering the scene, no longer are we stuck withย just the good old potato cake and dim sim.ย However, from all of the 'healthy' fish and chipย stores that I have been to, Tank Fish andย Chipsย has beenย far my favourite.

We usually have the Old School Catch of the Day, which is market fresh fish beer battered with chips, fresh lemon and tartare sauce. ย The fish is fantastic, perfectly cooked and juicy with great batter and they are generous with the tartare sauce.
Great place, modern twists in the classic fish&chips.
Salads are brilliant in this place, service definitely can improve more but overall they doing well
For a very reasonable price, these burgers definitely fill that gap with an excellent, if slightly contrived, selection of burgers. The burgers showcase the most popular fish sold at Tank and each bring a little bit different to the table.โ
The batter on the fillet in the appetiser was incredible. Perhaps the most perfectly shapely, crispy and light batter, this was made better by a demonstration of how the batter is made. We could have eaten the shop out of fish if they coated it in that batter. While the range of the Finding Emo series was great, the variety of flavours available was definitely welcome. The Parmesan-crumbed flathead was the standout of the three variations. Beautifully crispy crumb with moist and really fresh fish that didnโt become soggy in the burger, all complimented fantastically by the salad.
Tank Fish and Chippery has become one of the finest fresh fish and chips venues in Melbourne and the team have now developed the โFinding Emo burgerโ series, a menu of original burger specials.ย . The special menu will feature three fish burger recipes with distinguishing black squid ink brioche buns.
family tank is real large and rich. It's really suit for 3-4people. The restaurant is clear and view is good.Service is polite and nice. It's a good place for talking and eating at weekends.
Very good and very fresh fish. Not 'killed' on grill but just well done. Rive very tasty. Nice salat, not to strong, fat and sugary dressing. Housemade mayonnaise is not to good though. But the design inside the shop is great. Not only for take-away. Fish may be a bit salty sometimes but normally just ...great!
Best fish and chips eatery so far. This is not your ordinary fish and chips in the corner. Tank's decoration is quite fancy with proper table setting. Seafood and Salad are really fresh, they have great choices on fish like Atlantic salmon and Baramundi where you don't usually find in the standard fish and chips place. Food is well presented, for less than $8 you can upgrade into the menu and add Salad, chips or brown rice.
Highly recommend! I shared a Tank for 2 and it was so good!! Perfect variety and great food! It was seasoned very well, not oily and the chips were perfect.
Tank is the bomb I don't care how much it costs.
Give me a $4 prawn I don't care just get in my belly! Can't go past the calamari. Try it people it gets my taste buds dancing with delight. Just go there you'll thank me.

Absolutely loved it. Especially because the fishes were fresh, soft and yum. The chips was so good tho, not greasy and really tasty. Would come back any time soon!
Ever wondered if it's possible to have fish and chips at a low price in a restaurant which looks and feels like an uptown eatery? I too questioned the same thing for a long time, all I wanted was to eat something that feels like street food at a restaurant that is a little more posh than you'd expect it to be for the food they offer. Tank answered my question and with lots of style. The presentation of the food is impeccable and something you'd expect of masterchef. The staff are usually great, but don't judge the food by the way they treat you, rather by the way they treat the food that rests in the plate in front of you.
Hope your dining experience was as fruitful as mine.
This place is everything you want in a fish and chip shop. ย Good service, ย decent in-house eating space, and great food. ย The teriyaki salmon was perfect; I loved every mouthful. ย The chips--nicely herbed--and the salad-great dressing--made it an excellent all-round meal. ย Looking forward to going back next time I'm in town.
The food is just like the photos, and delicious. Staff are friendly. The salmon was cooked perfectly, chips deliciously garnished and a nice choice of salad.
If fresh is best and fish must be fresh then Tank has it all sewn up! The place always looks and feels clean and the staff always friendly and courteous. Service is speedy and importantly, in winter, the place is kept warm. Parking is possible and if you like 'take away' then the well treed park next door provides a nice place to which you can retreat.
My appreciation for fish has developed over time, although mostly centering around ceviche and sashimi. That is, until, V introduced me to Tank Fish and Chippery. Situated in two locations across Melbourne, they serve fresh seafood of all varieties, seasoned and grilled, or lightly battered and fried.
This is the best calamari in Melbourne! Highly recommended and accommodating staff. My go to place in Melbourne for calamari and everything else I've tried has been 10/10.
The potato cakes are crispy yet soft and totally magnificent. Like the chips, they're topped with an incredible salt-lemon-parsley seasoning. As a vegetarian, the chips and potato cakes are really my only options yet I still keep swinging by - because DANG dat seasoning!
Tank brings the class and quality to what is normally considered a fast food experience. I like my fish grilled and Sam recommended I try their salmon grilled with seasoned brown rice. The salmon was spot on. Not a moment over or under done. Frozen salmon fillets pales in comparison. I chose a rocket, beetroot and almond salad which was crisp and zesty to go with the salmon. The chips were seasoned with a tangy seasoning, not unlike Smiths BBQ chips. The nutty texture of the seasoned brown rice was the perfect foil for the creamy salmon.
Sunday for fish and chips, so tried somewhere different. Very attractive fish and chip shop with white and beautiful tables with very attractive tiles, it's a fresh and clean place.simple menu, ordered the crumbed fish burger with chips it was the catch of the day, panko with lettuce cheese and tartare sauce. It was delicious, the fish was not dry. Friend of mine ordered cheeseburger, wagyu mince served with tasty cheddar cheese gherkins mayo mustard and tomato sauce, had a bite it was juicy tasty and very delicious also served with chips. Burgers with chips range from $7.50 to $14.50 awesome value. They will also cook for you fresh fish of the day with salad or chips, also have variety of salads as well , from chicken to fish . Large variety drinks and mineral waters. great value.๐
Food was great - ordered my typical fish and chips dish. Wasn't too impressed by the portion sizes considering how much you pay for a simple dish. I've had similar dishes at other places for half the price and a higher quantity of food. Apart from the fact that this place is a little pricey for fish and chips, I still enjoyed my food greatly. Sadly, the small side salad was DRENCHED in salad dressing. It was wet, as if half a bottle of dressing was dumped onto it. I like a nice salad with my fish and chips, and I prefer not having all that added sugar from the dressing dumped onto the plate.
ย Also, managed to beat the lunch crowd so the wait for the food wasn't too long, but I can see it taking a while when it is busy from what I experienced.
Nice fish although limited range of salads. Came here on Good Friday and the dinner queue wasnt too long. I like the thin batter layer on their fried fish fillets. Catch of the day was Blue Granedier and I ordered additional flathead fillets. The flatheads were fried really nicely, thin crunchy crust but the Blue Granadiers were overfried, still acceptable but with a hard crunch. I guess it was a really busy day so inconsistencies crept into the busy kitchen. I dont like the chips though, either use thin shoestring fries or chunky ones.
My friend and I shared a Tank for 2, which turned out to be huge! We were so full after. My favourite part of the pack was the fish. The batter had a fantastic crisp and the fillet was fried to perfection and tasted extremely fresh. Probably the best fried fish I've ever tasted! The chips had a great crunch at the start but because they were served at the bottom under everything else on the plate, they softened and became soggy halfway through the meal, which was a shame because they were very good otherwise. Very well seasoned and tasted delicious especially with the tartare sauce. I don't usually like dim sims, but these were decent and not overly salty. The potato cake was alright, nothing too memorable.
One negative was the size of the salad. It was way too small even for 1 person, let alone to be shared between 2. Otherwise I enjoyed the meal a lot. Definitely one of the best fish and chips you can have in Melbourne.
This is my go-to lunch place in Carlton. The food is prepared quickly but is super fresh and yum. I love love love the calamari salad and fish burger.
Next only to Hunky Dory! their spread can give tough competition to this already established chain.
Just check out their pics on instagram and you wount regret visiting them and falling in love with this place.
Melbourne is what it is because of these two absolutely wonderful chipperies. Thanks a lot for the great food!
Love the fresh salmon with brown rice and salad here. The chicken salad here also is a great dish.
Everything here is fresh and not frozen.
One of the better fish and chips out there.
Great, fresh seafood with a well sized menu and a great location.
Food ordered:
The special; teriyaki salmon on seasoned brown rice with a side quinoa salad. The salmon was cooked perfectly with just a little pink. That rice was cooked up so well, I want the recipe! The salad was good that is all. Also shared haloumi skewers as a starter. Great portion sizes on this one, huge squares of cheese and tomatoes on skewers. It's a great way to start a meal. My wife ate the calamari salad which was also super fresh and perfectly cooked.
Ambience:
It's actually quite a good place to sit and eat. Located right in the heat of Lygon st, you can take a stroll after you dine for some shopping & gelato! The service here was average and the guy at the counter wasn't really friendly or anything really. A smile goes a long way. But if you order takeaway I imagine this isn't that much of a problem.
All I can say is that I wish I ate here sooner. I've driven past so many times, but now I will make it the spot next time the seafood craving hits.
Love this place! Fish n Chips are great. The food is really good, service is above average. The Family Tank is a winner. A bit of music would do them wonders.
This place is a 2 minutes walk from my house and I pop by sometimes whenever I'm craving for fish and chips. I usually order the grilled one and the fish is fresh. I also tried the oysters before and they were fresh. I think their seasoned brown rice tastes great! I also ordered a portion of fries for takeaway once. It literally came in a tray. $3.50 for a huge tray of fries is an overkill. I also like how it is never fully packed because I find it stressful to eat in an extremely noisy restaurant. I'm not implying that the business isn't good but rather, the overall atmosphere just makes dining a comfortable experience.
Flake, chips and salad, crunchy coating on the fish was great, salad light and fresh, chips seasoned really well - loved it. Service was prompt and polite, great atmosphere
The best fish and chips I've had so far. This fish and chippery is just fantastic. To go here on a sunny day is perfect. I've gotten the fish for two pack twice and it's been spot on both times. The staff are super friendly and all the food looks amazing. All this place needs is a beach and I would never leave.
A very good food! The Staff Treats us very well!We took Tank for 2. It was valuable for the money. Would go there in the future when I'm returning to Melbourne for holiday
As many people have said before, it probably is one of the best fish & chip shops. Was working in the area and didn't have much time for lunch with a colleague, so we thought we would give this place a go.. was well worth it, was fresh, tasty and everything was cooked perfectly. The seasoning that is usedย turns your boring old potato cake into something special. The portions aren't massive, but I mean for me it was just right especially when you have a hectic day and don't want to feel overly full.
A MUST. Visited last week while on a business trip. I absolutely love fish in general and the window looked promising. Well my food was declicious and fresh. I tried the calamari salad and regular fish and chips.Absolutely divine!! Not oily at all and well cooked. The prices were really reasonable. The service friendly and willing. Will definitely go back.
Good place but not as good as the emporium branch, but service was great and food was great but for some reason the city one is my fav.
Forget the fish, try their cheeseburger. It's not huge, but if you like a soft bun, pickle, ketchup and mustard, you won't find better on Lygon St.
It's a shame the portions are getting so small for that price, for Tank makes a hell of a good fish and chips which will keep reeling us back in for more.
I don't know where all these people with the negative reviews are eating, but it isn't at Tank.
I come here at least once a week, best calamari rings I've ever eaten, and the nicest fish tacos I have had in a very long time since the market was saturated with them.
As service goes, it's a cafe. Grab your own cutlery, get your own glass of water, sit down, shut up and enjoy the food.
Fish pack for one ordered with rice and salad. Girl delivered it with chips instead of rice and realised straightaway without me saying anything and brought out rice for me as well.
AWESOME!!
Fish and chips were great.
LOVE IT. I have been coming here for more then couple of years .Love the wagyu burger and best chips you can get all over lygon st !
Good location, fast service. Nice and clean dinning area. Free parking available nearby on the weekend. Fresh flakes but the scallops quite small and not as good as many other places so do not recommend the scallops one. There is also surcharge when pay by card.
Good location, fast service. We came for lunch. I had the fish burger - tasted great. My mate had the cheeseburger - he enjoyed it.
Value for money wise - I feel it's on par with all the other burger joints around town but here you are right next to a park, quiet and relaxed.
Fresh and delicious. The fish and chips is great with fresh tartare sauce. Home made potato cakes were creamy and herby. Well worth the stop :)
The food was delicious. I ate here 2 days in a row. The first day I got the crumbed fish burger and the fish of the day was Blue Grenadier. It's a very nice white fish. The next I ordered the old-school fish n chips. Again the fish was Blue Grenadier. I also ordered the grilled and battered scallops. The grilled was delicious too.
Good size portion and fresh food, it's not the best fish and chips joint in the busy Melbourne but sure you can get your money's worth.specially considering the place it locates, "Lygon st" if you are fed up with having all the Italian cousins this could be a welcome change.
Got the fish and chips pack with added scallop and calamari. Everything tasty and good quality, just a couple of things were just not to my personal taste: tartare sauce was quite oniony (I prefer tangy and I really don't like onions) and I did not realise that it was not going to be a calamari ring.
Great fresh fish so the GF/grilled version is cooked perfectly and is delicious. Several good alternatives to chips, but unless you had to, I suggest having the chips as well as they are good. The cheese burger was okay but probably over priced for what it was and with luck this might be addressed soon.
A great location and sitting on the bar facing Lygon St makes for great people watching. It's always nice to friendly happy staff, just makes to want to come back soon.
