Absolutely love this place!!! Such a good venue for some decent pub food while watching your sport of choice in a private booth with mates! Can’t ask for anything more!
A feel like I should be having a secret rendezvous when I walk inside the Turf bar. There are these wonderful booth seats, encased in velvet drapes that you can draw closed. It all feels rather naughty.............
Ordered the slow cooked lamb pizza and it was delicious. If you're unwilling to pay $18.50 a hot tip for you - go in on Tuesdays when they have a pint and pizza deal for $15. Numerous screens around the venue to watch the game and never find this place too packed so you can get a decent view.
We watched the grand final here last year because it was one of few places in Melbourne with large screens dedicated to sport that actually allows you to reserve a table on this blessed day. Ain't nobody got time for waking up at the crack of dawn to ensure seating at the Richmond Club. There was plenty of atmosphere and plenty of parmas (albeit the menu was a smaller more restricted one to cater for the crowds which is reasonable). The wedges went down a treat tonight. Great place to watch the footy with friends
The Turf Bar is like one big giant man-cave. Sport, beer, dude food and more sport.
Expect it to be packed out when there’s some kind of important sports game on, or any Friday lunch time. The beer selection is poor, unfortunately. Lots of stock-standard beers, nothing too crafty unfortunately. However, The Dear Luncher acknowledges that he is one very picky bastard when it comes to beer.
Let’s get one thing clear: this is a well-run establishment. Staff are helpful and knowledgeable. They also have to deal with swarms of blokes who are single-minded in their objectives: drink piss, eat food and watch sports.
The food ordered by The Dear Luncher and friends was of a high standard. To begin with, “Loaded Waffle Fries” – waffle cut chips topped with pulled pork, gravy and cheese. Next up The Dear Luncher chowed down on some slow cooked brisket with coleslaw. The brisket looked a little off-putting. Squarish. Compared to the other brisket on the table that looked fatty and a little more succulent. However, the brisket was tasty. A little dry, but tasty. The selected Southwest sauce that accompanied the brisket helped to alleviate some of this dryness.
A good experience all round. Make sure you make a booking. Otherwise, you’re gonna have a bad time. That’s assuming you want to eat. If you are just happy to drink and watch sport, you don’t have to book.
I ordered the Aussie Parma. It was average, nothing exciting. Chips could have been done better and so could the salad. Overall an average experience.
I used to be a bit of a regular at turf on weekends, usually coming past for a quick drink before a night out at a particular club which is close by.
They are very generous to play clashing sports at the same time on different projectors, meaning there is better variety for customers.
The service is always friendly and they are very good with familiar faces and make you feel welcomed back.
I only ever tried the wedges and steak off the menu, but both were a nice meal to go accompany my drinks.
I've eaten at the Turf Bar a load of times and have always had a really nice meal! The meals aren't over the top fantastic (they aren't supposed to be), but it's great for pub food with a good variety on the menu. The Parma and burgers are delicious and you get a large feed. There's always great specials and the staff are always welcoming. Probably the best sports bar in the CBD.
Modeled on the American sports bar they have given it a bit of an Australian twist. Parma anyone? The pizza was just outstanding, as good as any pizza restaurant.
Nice ambience. This is a pub and they serve honest pub food. The only drawback is that we had to wait more than 30min for a pizza and a salad and the place was not even crowded.
When the boys need a spot to catch their favourite American football games they often head to Turf Bar, it’s a good old bar, with pub grub, cold beer and screens you can view from every seat and catch all the action whether it’s cricket, footy, NFL, NRL and more! You enter off from the bustling street outside and into a traditional pub with a friendly ambience and an easy going style.
This quaint sports bar caught my eye as I passed by one day. I stopped to peer inside and thought I'd come back and give it a try. I was on a business trip and I returned on my last night in Melbourne for the $15 parma special on Wednesdays. Seems like every traveler in Melbourne must try a parma, so I sat down and ordered the Aussie parma and a pure blonde from the tap. They had several different parmas, and this one came with bacon, cheese, and an egg on top. It was pretty good and I was glad to have checked this to-do item off my list. What I really liked about Turf was the atmosphere. It was a low-lit British-stype pub and was a great place to relax on my last night in town and ruminate on my experience in Melbourne. The place was fairly lively with the right mix of background noise and music at a comfortable volume. The beers on tap were pretty good too, and I enjoyed a golden lager and a lazy yak while I watched a basketball game on their big projection screen. After one more Carlton draught, I found myselt a little reluctant to leave and I'd definitely return if I find myself in Melbourne again.
Good Sports bar with standard pub food, the menu is pretty standard yet food comes out promptly and is quite tasty, let's be honest you come to turf to watch sports and drink booze and if you get hungry the food is tasty!
Great sports bar. Good atmosphere and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Food is pretty much what you'd expect. Choice of beer is solid and reasonably priced.
One of the best Sports Bar in Melbourne. Great atmosphere when watching sports. Beautiful ice cold beer on tap. Food is great and priced fairly. The bar staff are very friendly which is great to see.
Just ok food but makes up for it with atmosphere.. This place is a no frills sports venue, when there is live sport on the atmosphere is electrifying. There are usually 90% males during these times, this is no big deal to me but may turn some away, and there are better places to eat.
The chef has created a very interesting and worthwhile menu. The sliders were great for a smaller meal and the sausages were excellent. One of the group had a steak and found it cooked to perfection, a shock for a city pub to be honest. The pulled pork sandwich was "to die for" apparently. Beers were ok and not over priced and the service was generally good and friendly.
Beer Dinner a Success!. Attended the Matilda Bay Beer Dinner at Turf bar last night and it was just brilliant! A really well run evening and the food was amazing. To say that Turf bar is used to making good filling pub grub this was a totally different experience and the food was that of top quality restaurant standard. Matched well with 6 different beers from Matilda Bay Brewery and a talk form the head brewer this was a great night and knowing that they do dinners like this a few times a year, I already look forward to the next event.
Good pub grub. Can't get enough of the Scotch Eggs.
Service was quick considering busy lunch times.
Great atmosphere, great food, lots of screens for watching sports if that your thing, gets very busy if there i a major sports evevt on tv.
Cheap drinks and finger food . Good for afterwork drinks.
Great food & good deals changing daily!
A great place for a casual beer during the day or after work. A generous serving of hot fresh chips as well.
Not bad. I can't complain about this venue. I've only ever dined for lunch during the week and it's always good pub food. Staff are attentive and there's minimal wait time for meals.
Awesome pizza for a pub. Do be careful when ordering wine large international staffing level.
