Review Captain Melville - Melbourne

Foodie Gal
Great little pub! The chicken Parma is delicious, made with quality ingredients. Also love that they have women’s sanitary items available for free in their female toilets; very considerate. Customer service was also fabulous. I will definitely be back for another Parma!

Very underrated F&B destination. Incredibly tasty burgers. Forget the rest hit up the best. Fast service too, but I can't stress enough the quality of food. Not trying to reinvent the wheel. Solid pub staples done with love. Bravo

One of my fav places, can order on the phone app now so don't even need to leave the table. Staff attentive and fun. Good food, finish the night upstairs for cocktails if you wish
Bill Mrozek
Very quiet at lunchtime. Limited menu. Lots of craft beer on tap.

Nice pub in central Melbourne with booth seating inside and an enclosed outdoor dining area further back. Food was great with a range of choices and prices for kids and adult meals were reasonable. Good spot for families. All orders by QR but friendly staff delivered our drinks and meals. Warm and cosy on a cold winter night.

A hidden gem in the CBD! Absolutely delicious cocktails and good food! The dining hall is outside but feels so cosy and warm, even on a cold winters night. I really appreciated a staff member checking in with us after we had ordered what seemed like too much food for 4 people (apparently noticed by the chef) and wanted us to be sure of our hunger before they started cooking it. This honesty and care is really refreshing as I have been to plenty of other places that don't inform you of their large servings or concerns of food wastage. I would love to come back soon!

Great space with some outdoor seating. Barrel aged negroni was very nice. I thought they served food, but excellent beer selection for a quick drink.
Tahlia Whitten
Wonderful food (yes, a little pricey, but for quality and location I think the pricing is fair), great drinks and lovely wait service! The only way it can improve is to have more seats outside ☺️

I’ve eaten at Captain Melville 4 or 5 times, and every time the food has been top quality with some of the friendliest service in the CBD. Today I tried the fried chicken sandwich and it was glorious, so glorious I’m writing a FB review. That the chocolate creme brûlée with peanut butter ice cream is even a thing makes me happy - but the eating of it is a delight. 5 stars every time.

Great range of beers - but always something affordable if you're a cheaparse like me, fantastic food for a pub, friendly staff. It started as 'the pub next to work', but now I cross the city to go there regularly. Ask them to play 'The boys are back in town' by Thin Lizzie, they love it ;)

Was looking for somewhere to get some food and came across this place pretty much by accident. Great range of beer, the Meville burger was awesome and the place has a really nice atmosphere

My bf and I visited Captain Melville last night. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, a great range of beer and delicious food. We'll definitely be returning again. Love it!

I went here Saturday 1/7/17 as part of a group booking for a friends birthday party. It wouldn't have been my choice as I know from previous experience their menu is quite limiting for people with food allergies. When I came to order I said that I couldn't order the two dishes that were marked as gluten free so was looking at the steak option, but noted that the fries did not appear to be gluten free. To which the guy behind the bar answered "well you can eat them if you like, it's not my diet". This is incredibly insensitive and also extremely unhelpful. This isn't a lifestyle choice for most people and even if it is it isn't up to other people to make a judgement on that. My friend that was with me when I ordered then said well could she have the olives (the only other item on the menu with a GF next to it) instead of the fries, to which he replied no as they are not the same price. The olives were $6 and the fries were $7. The guy then said I can give you extra salad, I said it already comes with salad, he said well I can give you extra salad. I relented at this point resigned to the fact I was going to be leaving hungry, and I wasn't disappointed as what came out was a piece of steak and a mountain of lettuce leaves with one wedge of tomato and two slithers of cucumber. This was just rude and unhelpful, I have already cancelled two meetings with colleagues that wanted to go here since last Saturday and will continue to discourage people from going, in this day and age there is no need to be so rude and backwards when it comes to accommodating people with food allergies, intolerance's or preferences.

Bloody awesome venue. There's a reason why I keep going back. Good beer. Good staff. Good tunes.

Very fast service, very good food, reasonable priced. I would highly recommend it. I had the very best chicken parmi ever and my girlfriend had the cheeseburger and loved it. Great work guys

Their is no better food in Melbourne, if you are tourist or local Captain Melville is the place for you , with their amazing food and drink selections. If that was not good enough their freindly and allways accomodating staff will take care of you from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. 5 stars is not enough, this place is AMAZING !!!!!!

Great place for a meal - food is great value and staff are excellent!

The Hotel Ned Kelly was held before his execution. It’s had a refit since then but hasn’t lost any of its charm. Great handcrafted beers on offer and the staff are friendly.

Will never be the Oxford Scholar, but I have been known to stop in after work once or twice. However disappointed to be told, upon asking why wine is not included in happy hour “the door is right there”. You know what? I’m using it!

Some of my girlfriends and i hosted a hens night at Captain Melvilles over the weekend in their private function room. We could not have been happier with the service and super glad we chose this venue! Ashlee was our person of contact and from day 1, she answered all our question (we had a lot of questions too), reassured us that we would be well looked after and was so delightful to deal with! For the event we had originally asked to finger foods but Ashlee suggested we go with the canape options and SUPER glad we took her advice. The food was outstanding and all our guests loved it. I would definitely host another event here again! The whole team at Captain Melville made our night extra special and stress free. Thank you so much again!

Great atmosphere. Food will make you thirsty for the epic amount of beer and booze on offer

Spent a week in Melbourne was there every night best food i have ever eaten and the staff are very friendly. I wish it wasn't 5 hrs away so i could dine there more often.

Captain Melville is great for an easy environment to catch up with friends and I can imagine how popular it'll be on a friday... it was super spacious!<br/><br/>Ordered:<br/>🍝 Prawn and Crab Linguine: with roasted cherry tomato, garlic, chili, parsley, and preserved lemon ($21.00)<br/><br/>Review:<br/>I've been really into prawn linguine as of late. It gives me the satisfaction of noodles without the heaviness that usually weighs me down. The lemon gave a really fresh twist, and the roasted cherry tomatoes popped in my mouth. The portion was just enough, and it left me feeling really satisfied. One snag would be that the oil pool at the bottom of the plate. I appreciate a bit of oil, but not when it coats my lips 😋.<br/><br/>Service is straightforward. Find yourself a seat, then go to the bar to order and pay. Food is served shortly after!

Visited for lunch with work colleagues.<br/>Nice and bright space. The place was packed on a Friday afternoon<br/>I had the pork tacos- the portion size was small and could have been better with some seasoning.<br/>My colleagues had the Parma, buffalo wings and lamb ragu (which was the only one that wasn't enjoyed)<br/>They don't do split bills, but have an atm in house.

On the outskirts of the CBD, Captain Melville is a nice pub to relax in and watch the world go by. It has loads of space over several areas, but I like to sit out the front on a nice day and enjoy a glass or two.<br/><br/>With an extensive drinks list, there will be something for everyone. Service is really good, and there is a real chilled atmosphere here. They also have a decent food menu, but I've only ever been here for drinks and a catch up with friends. Overall, it's a pretty good pub with a nice relaxed vibe.

We came here after our Walks 101 Melbourne tour. Supposedly, this is the oldest pub in Melbourne. Overall, ambiance is nice for a nice Sunday lunch - with a well maintained bathroom<br/><br/>Food-wise, price is decent. We got the Captain Melville burger (loved the chips, and the egg on the burger), as well as the slow braised Lamb ragu (unfortunately didn't like this - tomato base was a bit overwhelming and I found the meat very crumbly). Supposedly the beer here is MUCH better than the food though, so would be worth a second visit to try the drinks
@KeraBearEats
The space is casual and laidback, the atmosphere full bright energy, and menu refined with Chef Mark&rsquo;s fine dining background combined with his love of simple, home-style cooked meals; great for the corporate worker&rsquo;s lunch break but also excellent for big groups during the evenings and weekends.

Traditional pub on the edge of the cbd. Can be tricky to find a proper place but this certainly is. Good food, lots of Beatles music and cosy atmosphere. Nice to hang out on a weeknight.
Neil The Foodie
What a lovely old pub nestled amongst the tall modern buildings at the north side of the CBD. Dinner here on our way to a jazz club, lovely craft beers on tap, went down very nicely. Had a steak with salad and chips, very nice indeed. Great ambience, well priced with a good menu with adequate selections. Tables were a bit sticky and could have been cleaned better. Overall very good, worth a visit.

Stumbled across this gem while searching for an open bar on Labour Day to catch up with some friends. Upon entering, we were greeted warmly by the bar staff, even though they were already under the pump after a group of pub crawlers who had just wandered in. The staff were incredibly friendly; more than happy to crack a joke, recommend drinks or food and have a laugh. The seating inside was spacious enough so that our group had more than enough space to sit around the table and eat some food. I had the cheeseburger and would highly recommend. In the end, the night was even more special when we learned of our friend’s recent engagement. The staff were once again more than happy to assist with organising a bottle of champagne for the happy occasion. Really glad we found this place and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

came here for a group event and had the beer expert humiliate me in front of ~15 people while trying to take a photo of my tray of beer samples. <br/>Rudest staff member i've ever encountered and threw off the night for everyone. Imagine a group of 18-25s being afraid to eat their hot chips while the 'expert' is speaking in case they get yelled at too.<br/><br/>Disgraceful, never going there and would NOT recommend
Tsk Tsk Tsk
The general manager was a horrid man, very rude to me and my guests. An overall awful person to be around, him being there made us all feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. He must have finish and stayed for a drink or was just terrible at his job and was drinking whilst working when we witnessed him yelling at a group of customers (who had done nothing). That was the last straw so we finished our drinks and left. <br/>On the other hand the staff were amazing and service was quick, the food was brilliant. <br/>

Worst chicken parma I have tried in my life, taste was bad and size was tiny!... sad for a venue thats been open for such a long time..<br/>Beer is good and chips were great tho; I hope they try harder... anyway, Im never coming back again for lunch
David Litewka
went here for a work reunion dinner on a Saturday night. Overall, the experience wasn't bad, but a few things. first, the menu was very small with not much choice. I paid for a jug of apple juice and coughed up $16!<br/>I ordered the chicken burger which had very little fries and a oily fried burger which had not much taste. apart from that, the service was very good and the atmosphere was inviting :)

Was served a beer. Within minutes told it was last drinks. Music turned off. Loud clearing up noises going on around. Great smell of disinfectant as bar is cleaned. I know I've only bought one beer...but really!
Melbourne Epicure
Their burgers are quite delicious. The venue is quite nice at the back. Not at all what you would imagine from the entrance. Nice large tables for a big group. Again, the burgers…! Yum. Good beer on offer.
Stephanie Gomez
Ordered the steak and was very happy with what I received. The sauce was delightful and steak cooked perfectly. We were a large group and the food did take a while and the size of the steaks was not consistent all around the table. Great atmosphere and lovely staff. Will certainly return!

Visiting Captain Melville was a last minute decision and a risky one, I'd never heard of it prior, but decided to go for the adventure. The experience for my wife and I was was excellent, we enjoyed the music playing, the environment was great and the staff were very attentive and pleasant. We started by sharing some Nachos, they had a bit of a kick to them but not overpowering. Next was our mains and the Raghu I had was fantastic, great blend of flavours, I'd return just to have it again. The boss had the roasted cauliflower salad as a main and loved it, very yummy was the feedback. One slight downside was the lack of options on the menu, but it wouldn't stop me from returning again soon.

Went here for late Wednesday dinner, which turns out to be steak night. Had steak for $17, the chips and salad was really good 🤤. Been here a couple of times and last time I ordered the burger which is also really yum. A good place if you're ever craving pub food in the city. Definitely a hidden gem.

I have passed this bar so many times but never been inside until 2 days ago. My boss booked a table for dinner at this 150years old bar. Its a normal bar downstairs but there is more spaces upstairs with smaller tables, a cute date spot I think! It used to be a confession place. You can book tables inside for dining and they have plenty of seats actually. I opted for a black angus rump because I just thought it's a safe option. It was actually quite good for $28. My friend had the lamb ragu pasta and she really liked it. The staffs were really friendly and helpful too. Food took a bit longer but we really didn't mind as we were enjoying ourselves. Would come back again!!

Loved the old menu and the Mac's burger was incredible. Recently changed it and food it still good but not the same. Do a great $15 steak dinner deal on Wednesdays which is seriously good value and staff are great craic!

Ordered: Rump steak with a side chips and salad<br/><br/>The rump steak was cooked medium rare just how I ordered. The sauce was really fantastic and flavourful. The chips and salad were also a great compliment for the rump. <br/><br/>This restaurant is a great place to hang out. They have board games and card games which you can play with once you wait for your meal. <br/><br/>Would come again and bring my friends along.
DumplingDoll
Came here for work lunch, the menu is quite small but I guess it covers what most people would want in a pub meal, Parma, burger, steak, salads and a type of pasta. <br/>Though I didn't find the menu overly inspiring I ordered the steak as my colleague orders that every time she is here. The steak was cooked perfectly, the jus was a bit on the strong side for me. But overall, not a bad pub meal.
Squidjum
The bar itself is nice and the staff are friendly. My friend and I went for lunch on Mothers Day (although not for that reason) and the bar filled very quickly with raucous people, which isn't a problem if everyone's enjoying themselves. The food, on the other hand, was pretty basic and I was disappointed. I had the cheeseburger, which, if you put a blindfold on, would swear it was from McDonalds. The bun was very soft, and cheese was just a Kraft Singles slice. Chips were okay but more like McCains frozen chips from the supermarket. Hardly gourmet!  I ate it because I was hungry. My friend, on the other hand, couldn't eat her meal. She ordered the nachos, and had to send it back because it tasted funny, like something in it was off. The waiter offered fresh cream but we had to leave, so there wasn't much point. A refund would have been nice, but it wasn't offered.<br/><br/>I would go there for a drink, but I'm not going to recommend it as a place to eat. There are much better places around town for burgers and nachos (e.g. Trunk, Arbory) so go somewhere else.
Dimzib
This place is great for their $15 steaks every Wednesday. The steaks are juicy and tender, and are always served with deliciously seasoned and crispy chips, and a well-dressed salad. The staff here are always friendly and welcoming.
Good Food Good Mood
Such a quaint little place. Captain Melville is housed in a historic building and as such feels really warm and homely inside. It's a pub (although leaning towards the fancier end of the gastropub scale) so as to be expected the portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. The staff were lovely and my pasta was delicious. Two very happy customers

Earlier in the week, I asked my brother what he wanted for lunch when we see each other on the weekend. "Burgers," he said, "at my place." But once I got to his place, we walked about 100m east to Captain Melville. Apparently anywhere within 5mins of his place is considered "his place". He's been here so often they knew him anyway.<br/><br/>He loved the burgers but his girlfriend pointed out that it seems to be an opinion that only they shared. Apparently everyone else they have taken here were not as blown away as he had been. <br/><br/>So we tried:<br/>1) Melville cheese burger: the basic burger. Bun was soft and the meat was cooked well. No complaints here but I didn't think it was much better than a Macca's cheeseburger. 3/5<br/>2) captains burger: my brother rated it a 5/5 because it had everything he wanted, complete with runny egg.<br/>3) Mac's burger: fried chicken and beef patty brought together perfectly with chipotle mayo. It was good, very good. My husband said he would go back the next day and order it again. 5/5<br/><br/>Service was very friendly and we were well looked after. It wasn't busy though so that could've helped. 5/5

Came here for some drinks for friends and it was a large venue with plenty of space. We ended up going upstairs and had a few drinks up there. The drinks such as the beer were reasonably priced. A shame that we got there after 10 so the kitchen had closed as we wouldn't have minded a few bites to eat!

Came here after work for a catchup with old colleagues. <br/>We decided on this place as it had a very nice bar upstairs and downstairs had a cool restaurant.<br/><br/>The bar upstairs was very hipster with no drink menus but sophisticated and experienced bar tenders who were able to make fancy cocktails from your drink suggestions or tastes. <br/><br/>Downstairs was quite loud and busy on a Friday night, even in the main dinning area, we were seated on a communal table in the centre of the venue. <br/>We ordered a bunch of starters to share including chicken wings, chilli beef fries and beef nachos which were all pretty good! <br/><br/>For mains we ordered the captain burger, the cheese burger, macs burger, chicken Parma and the prawn linguini - the burgers were pretty solid as everyone enjoyed them, the Parma was a good serving size and the chicken was cooked tender, the linguini was nice but looked to be a small portion size and had less prawns. The food was about 3.5 along with the atmosphere here, the reason for the bump up to 4.0 is due to the cool and trendy bar upstairs.

I came here for a group lunch and had the steak special on a Wednesday. It was a decent price and reasonable portion of meat, salad and chips that were filling. The service was a bit slow (possibly because of the group size) but the servers seemed to be having a bad day with many spills and broken dishes.
Gidget
Had a work function here for Xmas, we had a big table and they did well to get the food out quickly. <br/><br/>They had run out of certain dishes (salmon) so many on our table had to change orders, not sure why you wouldn't stock up if you knew a big group was coming in. The food however was alright, I did luckily get my order in early so did get the salmon, it wasn't overcooked but cooked more than I'd usually like, the greens lacked a bit of flavour and the packet pickled ginger was nothing special. Fish and chips my friend had looked nice and not bad for the price. Felt like it was just typical pub food. Worth a visit if your nearby but wouldn't go out of my way to come back.
Tomas
I remember the days when this venue was a club and band room. There have been a lot of changes since then. Polished wood, brass and a tasty menu make it a good pub destination that's a little on the fancy side.<br/><br/>There is a dining room in the back which fits large groups or for a more intimate time stay in the front bar (or great veranda on Franklin st) for some people watching. Staff are usually a bit overwhelmed by large groups (do they never get busy?) and in the few times I've gone, really struggled to keep up with orders. Having said that they are all pleasant and nice. The food is decent and a notch above standard pub meals. Beer selection is usually the standard Aussie beers with a few interesting bottles thrown in. <br/><br/>There is a great little cocktail bar located upstairs, I would suggest having a meal down stairs then a fancy drink up top. This place is definitely a notch above a standard pub and great if you are in the area (not much else around this part of the CBD) but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit.

Lonely little old-school 160 year old building, nestled among a series of towering neighboring Sky Scrapers.<br/><br/>They've tacked on a massive outdoor/indoor eating area at the back of the old building which would probably seat about 150 people and they have an upstairs area and balcony as well.<br/><br/>1st and most important Question: Will I Go Back?<br/><br/>Answer: Absolutely<br/><br/>Went with a group of 5 people from work and 4 out of the 5 really enjoyed the meals.<br/><br/>very simple menu but enough to keep you interested for several return visits.<br/><br/>I had the Captain burger with fries for $19, it looked a little under awing when it 1st came out but the fries were great tasting (a little oily but good) Double beef, double Bacon Burger was great.<br/><br/>It was just enough on the plate to satisfy the belly and not be bursting and uncomfortable at the end.<br/><br/>Others had various burgers and Chili Beef Nacho's (a definite hit).<br/><br/>Staff were great.<br/><br/>Atmosphere was good, a little noisy. <br/><br/>Service was quick, we got there dead on 12pm to beat the rush but with 45 minutes or so the place was choca block but appeared to pump out the meals very quickly.<br/><br/>Looking forward to going back on a nice day and sitting on the balcony.<br/><br/>Thanks guys for a great lunch!
Mrs Mark
Good value pub grub. We had the parma which was a bit dry but still good and the rump steak which was excellent for $25. The chips were particularly tasty.
Generous Serve
we rushed in here after work and the place was pretty busy for a Thursday night. Good sign! We sat and ordered the Melville cheeseburger and steak sandwich. The menu itself did have a modern pub cuisine feel. Went down well with my merlot

The quinoa salad was awesome with fig and date. Had to ask chef for the menu it was that good! Great vibe, awesome, friendly service that was not invasive. Best pub meal I've had in years and $100 for a family of four with glasses of wine and beers is great value. <br/>

We love thanks place and our usual pit stop on our way home. Wednesday steak night is a favorite with a lovely cooked rump steak wth fries and salad for $20. The chili beef nachoes is our go to entree but the chicken parmigiana is a close second favorite. Good service and lovely upstairs section.

Been here twice as part of a work lunch group. Love the ambience and decor - especially the dining hall inside. The food was pretty good - I had their beer battered fish & chips. Colleagues who had the day's special  steaks were impressed as well. Overall, a nice place with great vibe to have a relaxing lunch.
FoodHedonist
It's a pretty huge place. Relaxed and a great vibe. It's got a restaurant at the back and a bar in front. I like such versatile places - gives you more options. Good selection of beers and food.<br/><br/>Nachos were excellent, couldn't fault. Just the right amount of guacamole, sour cream, cheese. Seemed like the corn chips were house made. Parma could be better but not bad. A bit smaller and too cheesy. I would return!

The Melville is 3 for 3 for me, great simple pub food, fantastic staff and a great location. I've had the steak a couple of times and its consistently good, the pepercorn jus was just right (perhaps more would be great). The staff didnt even panic at Friday lunchtine when we rocked in unannounced with a table of 12. Thanks guys your on my list for a good cdb feed!!

I had the Melville cheese burger. It was super good, the beef was really tender and juicy. Even just thinking about eating it makes my mouth watery again and again. The grilled steak sandwich was pretty good too. And the chicken parmigiana was pretty okay.
Matthew Brown
Was a very nice burger and a lovely spot for a lunch. The food was good but not great but the service was great. Happy to recommend to all

Fabulous burgers, steak, chips and seemingly random entrees in a beautiful bar with a fabulous outdoor dining space. Definitely thumbs up for this place. I went with a group of eight friend and not one person was unhappy with their meal. Bonus points, they have a vegan burger and a number of very tasty vegan entrees. I ordered two entrees - miso tofu with seaweed and enoki mushrooms (OMG yum) and a black bean soft taco. If you wanted to order entrees only, I would suggest you order three, as two was not quite enough.
Kate
Great venue and even better prices! Cheeseburger was amazing, staff were great and the decor is really cool. Don't let the small menu put you off; it's a really great place to go!
Autumnsadieo
Trendy frontage and intriguing menu cannot save this CBD pub. Banana taco an interesting concept fell short of expectations, though vanilla bean icecream very smooth. Fries great, burger good. For a quick bite with friends, a nice vibe... but if you are in for foodie destination, give this place a miss....
LoveFOOD Hate BADservice ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
A pub which is a little posh. The fish and chips and fried chicken burger are great and value for money for its price. The pork sliders are crunchy and flavoursome. The service staff are a little too keen to take orders or clear your plates which made us feel that we're taking too much of their time and kinda dampen the whole experience.
Sharna Lee
Great experience for dinner last night. Old pub with modern renovation, looks beautiful and the staff are friendly (and fun)! Food was delicious as well as reasonably priced. We'll certainly be back!
Fiona
Never knew this place existed! Hidden away on Franklin Street :p Anyways I ordered the peppercorn steak with salad which was yummy. My work colleague reckons the fish and chips was the best she's ever eaten! I will definitely be back next time to try, or the Parma...or both..haha
Angela Wicks
What a gem! Perfect if you've a hankering for some basic pub food done beautifully. My Parma was delish, thick, juicy chicken, great Napoli sauce. It came with yummy thick cut chips and coleslaw, which could've been improved with a zingier dressing but was still pretty good. Mr X reported that his burger was excellent and we both liked the laid back atmosphere and friendly staff.
Jeff
Came here for a Friday night feed with my missus <br/>It was the bestest food I've had in a long time! We had $5 spirits coz it was happy hour or somethin and then had a sick burger and parma that I swear was almost as good as the one I make<br/>5 stars<br/>

My Local Hangout after work (as it sits right next to my office), This place has got a Great Atmosphere on a Friday night for afterwork drinks and the Staff are Exceptional, the Happy hour prices are great and the range of beers they have on tap and Shelf Spirits is impressive, they have vastly improved their food menu which caters more to the working class that are in the area.<br/><br/>Have brought friends from Interstate to this venue multiple times and they have failed to disappoint with their $15 Steak Wednesday and generous portions (even found out my friends visited again without me), definitely a place I would recommend if you're looking for a lively atmosphere with a large drink selection and highly skilled bartenders that have wowed me with some of their Cocktail making skills (Especially Kat).

Hand down. Best Parma in Melbourne. Always tastes the same and the size is always consistent.<br/>Staff are always happy and are so easy going with alterations.<br/>Parma days on Monday also a big hit!
Parmasofmelbourne
On Wednesday 2 of us were struck with some serious midweek parma cravings. We had heard some really good things about Captain Melville, so being right around the corner from our uni we went down after class. Approaching the place, i realised i walk past this place every week but never really took interest to sus the beauty inside. This place claims itself to be ‘the coolest bar’ in Melbourne. It is definitely one of the coolest bars/pubs we have walked into thats for sure. A newly renovated pub that is impeccable inside. We had a good feeling about this place. <br/>We took a seat in the front bar awaiting our parmas. <br/>Parmas came out in no time. <br/>Seeing the parma lay beside the chips and not on top of them instantly made us love this place even more.<br/>The chicken itself was quite small compared to what we were used to but did have some quality thickness to it which filled up our stomachs. <br/>The breast was fresh and thick and juicy. If your a fan of crunchy crumbing this is the place for you. We definitely are.<br/>The fresh home made Napoli was tasty and was applied perfectly leaving no naked parma.<br/>The shaved ham was quality. Nice and tasty. We definitely felt its presence. <br/>The cheese tasted like a house made cheese blend. It was delicious none the less. Grilled to perfection.<br/>Our favourite part of the dish was definitely the thick cut beer battered bad boy chips. This is exactly how we like our chippies at POM. We were licking the left over crumbs from the chips off the plate they were that good.<br/>The coleslaw was pretty meh. Not that it was bad, but it definitely comes down to if you are a fan of coleslaw or not. Personally we prefer our leafy greens than creamy weeds.<br/>Captain Melville definitely fulfilled our midweek parma cravings beyond satisfaction. An absolute stunning parma that was honestly hard to fault. This is one of those places you walk out of and already start planning your next visit. The perfect place to come down for a drink or parma after a dreadful day at uni. I’d be lying if i said i won’t be down here again in the next few weeks. A must try. <br/>8/10<br/>Price: $21<br/>($15 special on Mondays)<br/>Delete Comment
The Weekly Review
You need to try the chips (fries): these begin as standard french fries (somewhere between Five Guys and Wendy’s, for what it’s worth). But then, because you’re a health-conscious eater like I am, you’re going to want to have your order of chips dusted with parmesan-garlic dust and a schmear of nacho cheese sauce (or you can do the brown gravy, which, as I’ve said, is simply beyond). Then the chips are elevated well-past even the Five Guys ceiling of fantastic fries. But, because you’re not kidding around any more than is McGilvery’s, you’re going to order the cheese curds. Yes, you really are: deep-fried cheese curds served with a side of, you guessed it, house-made McGilvery’s brown gravy. While the gravy/fried cheese combo may sound like the punchline to a redneck joke (what is a nutritious breakfast for…), it’s actually surprisingly delicate and comfortable; a beautiful deep-fried paradox of strangeness and familiarity that manages to be nothing short of perfect. You might think you’ve experienced fried cheese curds: at Buffalo Wild Wings (small; nubbly breading) or Culver’s (homogenized and pleasant, if not memorable), or the fair (it’s the fair and it tastes like it). McGilvery’s elevates the cheese curd and the deep-fried and the brown gravy. I don’t know how they do it. They just do. And it is worth more than the price of admission.

Staff make this place. Shout out to the bar staff for always being friendly and filling my glass, burgers are always juicy chips are always hot and beer is always cold and the cocktails upstairs speak for them selves

Captain Melville was a suggestion from a friend who is a fellow eating enthusiast, and what makes him even cooler, is his capacity to indulge my ability to over-order and over-eat. So, we ordered a lot of food this sitting. Captain Melville is placed on the old Miss Libertine’s site, and as I’ve heard, is a far cry from its old personality. Walking in via the back space, you’re greeted with a chic outdoor beer-garden style courtyard with wooden chairs and an area which could double as a casual birthday celebration, or a corporate flog. Inside is slightly more pub-style, but with sleek black bar spaces and artful fluorescent lighting. It’s quite intimate without being sleezy. And the food menu: so many varied dishes to choose from without being ridiculous and over the top.

On the outskirts of the city lies this little gem where all their food is sourced from ethical and sustainable farms at a reasonable price! Think refined pub food with a few twists and turns (in a good way) here and there. Their fried chicken was especially tasty, standing right alongside some of Melbourne’s finest. The menu was designed to be shared, but they do cater to those who enjoy a meal all to themselves. Can’t say no to pub grub! In a Sentence:  Maybe the best pub in the city Verdict: Would Go Back
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Both the bread rolls were toasted on the inner surface until very crispy, but still retained the soft and fluffy innards. They were slightly sweet, like Asian bread.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
The sweet, toasted bun tasted like the one used in their sliders and the whole burger was unsurprisingly moist, since the double wagyu patties were almost constantly dripping with juices. Unfortunately the juices did make the bottom half of the bun a bit soggy by the time I picked it up, but that was forgivable. The pickle, egg and also the salty crunch from the bacon gave it multiple dimensions of flavour and I quite enjoyed it.

Word’s cannot and I mean cannot describe how good this slider was. My first bite of it, just felt like fireworks cracked in my mouth, my eyes instantly lit up. I honestly couldn’t stop thinking about slider for hours. In actual fact I wanted to order dozens of Soft Shell Sliders if I could because I’d swim in them all

Unexceptional food, average service, relaxed atmosphere.

Captain Melville strikes a chord with those who seek a pleasant casual evening after a days of work. The food is very well done, the drinks are plentiful and the atmosphere conducive to lots of laughs over plenty of beers, as the Mobreview team experienced. Nestled on Franklin St, it’s a little haven away from the busy-ness of the inner CBD.

I love the food here. I think the tofu, the sliders, the entree/share options are just beautiful.

Agree with other posts on here re service. Food was nice. Venue great - love the fit out and feel. Service was very disappointing though so won't be returning in a hurry.

A pleasant surprise. I had not heard of Captain Melville's and only went there because a friend took me. The menu was varied and some dishes quite unique. We had a wonderful meal and found the service friendly and efficient.<br/>I have since been again with my husband.

Not happy. I can forgive a lot and I know mistakes happens to everybody. My cocktail was brought out and the waitress accidentally spilled about a third of the martini glass. She apologised. wiped down the table with a dry cloth (not very smart as the whole table was completely sticky) and said she would bring me a new one. Two minutes later she walked back with the exact same drink, so basically minus everything she had spilled - no explanation, as if it wasn't completely obvious, and cheerfully passed it off as a new drink. This was utterly unacceptable and frankly, pretty much like robbing us. I won't be able to look past this one MASSIVE service flaw, although the rest of the staff were very nice and helpful. We loved the food, but the desserts were awful (so definitely skip). Sorry but the completely unacceptable behaviour by one waitress completely outshines what we did enjoy about the dinner.

Check your bill!. Very disappointed in the service our group received the other night. Firstly the waitress got annoyed that we didn't decide right away on our orders. Our food was good, and came out pretty fast. At the end of the night we got the bill and found a $50 bottle of Shiraz (no one at our table even drank wine), a Heineken and another drink that no one ordered - about $100 extra. We asked for clarification and the items were swiftly removed but no explanation how or why they got added on. Luckily we checked the bill before paying as a group - I advise others to do the same. No tip from us... Shame... as the food was good.

Great!. I really enjoyed my dining experience here. The place looks amazing, and the music is interesting. The service was good and the waiter was pleasant. The squid and tofu starters are beautiful, and the burger is amazing. The fries are really nice too, though I struggled to finish my portion. There was no coffee when we went (which doesn't affect me, but made my friends sad) but I think that was a once-off kind of thing.

Decent food. Lousy cocktails.. Food is fine and tasty but cocktails are overpriced for what you get. Really watered down and can't taste the alcohol at all. Not good enough for when they charge from $17 for one. Don't bother with the jugs either, same same. Come here for mains but pass on the desserts - they're not that great.

Mid-range pub/restaurant. Nice ambience..cheap, finger-lickin' bar food. But slightly pricier drinks.

Good food - shame about the black eye!. OK, so I'll admit the staff were hugely apologetic about this, and did everything they could do physically help my friend (bandaids, saline, icepack) - but seriously, all they did to make up for it was comp her main. What about her entree and drink charges, let alone the rest of our traumatised table?<br/><br/>What happened was this: two staff collided with each other when one of them opened a door into a waiter carrying plates. Due to the door placement, this was an accident waiting to happen, which one of the staff acknowledged to us - he said they'd sort the door out pronto. One of the flying plates ricocheted off my friend's shoulder and into another friend's face, splitting her brow bone open. Small cut, luckily, and it missed her eye. Today she is swollen and looks like she's wearing red and purple eyeliner. <br/><br/>Then several of us were in the bathroom comforting her and patching her up, and they actually tried to serve food to our empty places (other friends sent it back until we returned).<br/><br/>Again, I emphasise that the staff were horrified and did all they could do help out (and the food was admittedly pretty good), but how is it that our table got charged even a dollar after having our meal ruined like that, due to the poor layout of this restaurant? Bad judgement on the part of management.

Love...but prefer the old menu. I came here Friday night for a catch-up with friends and had a really great night. Captain Melville's has a great vibe, good drinks' specials to end the week with and great food. <br/>The only criticism is the new menu - I much preferred the old menu - please bring back the zucchini flowers and snapper! We got the fried chicken, which wasn't very nice at all - tough and lacked flavour, the saganaki was also very tough and served 'warm' however this was made up for by the delciousness of the mushroom main - highly recommend!

Avoid $12 lunch menu!. Went for lunch today, thought I would try the $12 lunch menu. I ordered the "Chicken Parmie Roll" it should be called the chicken nugget roll. It was about the size of a slider. I will not be returning.

10 out of 10 and will most certainly be returning again. Best dining experience I have had in a while. Their food was to die for and their staff were great from the moment I walked in. I was also surprised at how cheap the bill was considering the quality of the food and service at such a great venue.<br/><br/>Keep it up Captain Melville Team

Very unimpressed. Raw chicken!. I went to check this place out a while ago with a few friends for some drinks late on a Sunday afternoon, we ordered a couple plates of chicken kiev balls and bowls of chips for a snack... When the chicken kiev balls came out, one of us had bitten into it to realise they were still very raw inside! We were basically the only customers there at the time, yet we had to prompt the staff to take them back, it was almost like they didn't know how to handle it. Eventually, some new ones were brought out, but the waiter didn't show much towards apologies, or offer anything complimentary when raw chicken is a big deal! Initially, the menu looked great and I had potential to go back, but after that I do not wish to go back!

Menu Change. Went several times and loved it, but last time (three weeks ago), we found they made some changes: burguer used to come with their signature wedge fries but this time they used cheap fries (worst that McDonalds), so I asked them about it, the waiter said that was due to a management decission... later I commented to another waitress, she said that the menu has never been changed which is not true and when I mention the fries issue she said "you should have mention from the beginning and we would have changed your fries"... Fish and Chips: 10% of the dish was fish, the rest salad and cheap fries. Pulled pork bun: on of the bests I ever tried and this is the only reason I would return. The Staff was just bad.

Have been going here for a while. Always enjoyed the atmosphere and service, and the bar food was delicious. Came on Saturday night and had a full restaurant meal and loved it - a perfect steak, just as I has ordered it. Again, staff were great as ever. Also, quieter on a Saturday than during the week, so was perfect for a catch-up.

Poor hospitality. A group of us were there one evening discussing a project in the outdoor area with a few beers, it got harder to read as the night falls we can clearly see the lights were working fine on the other half of the outdoor area. After baffling back and forth going back to the waiter (who was trying to find the switch / manager) with a final answer 'the lights were busted', same situation happened an hour later when it started to get freezing cold but the heater was not on, and guess what, the gas ran out. All would have been fine if we were informed earlier instead of a luke warm 'I'm serving right now' the the waiter when I popped over the counter asking if they can on the heater.

Fish and chips was amazing, best to try it for yourselves but I'm rating this at the top. Great backroom dinning experience!

Terrible service negates the good food and atmosphere. I went with a group of 18 people. Thumbs up for food and atmosphere, double thumbs down for awful service. There were a maximum of 5-6 tables the night - actually it was 3 tables for most of the night (our large group and another couple of tables)<br/><br/>By awful I mean the waitresses I swear were trying to ignore us on purpose (not meeting eye contact despite gesturing, turning their backs on the room and chatting at the kitchen), and when called to take orders, only took individual ones then went back to the counter. There was no voluntary offer to take orders for either food or drinks. Even when specifically instructed with "Can we please order individual drinks for the table?. Can I have xyz.." she took just my order and went back, necessitating another frantic 5 minutes of trying to catch someone's attention. <br/><br/>Furthermore, when placing food on the table, she had no idea which order belonged where when taking dishes out and accused us passive aggressively of swapping seats (which none of us had) by spitting out, "did you all swap seats or something," to the air in an extremely annoyed tone when getting an order wrong <br/><br/>As the night went on, she was carrying bowls/cutlery up the aisle when she dropped some of the forks and knives on the tray, one of which hit me in the back of the head with great force (and hurt!) and onto the floor next to me. Not only did she not bother to pick it up at the time, but she didn't acknowledge she'd dropped it on me, and when she came back for the fork, deliberately ignored me despite the fact that I spun around to look at her out of indignity.<br/><br/>Not only that my friends were really put off because they had been told the wrong price about one of the specials, and had ordered it only to be smacked with a bill with the price 13 dollars more than they price they were told and met with a blank stare. In fact the price they were told on asking different waitresses was different the 3 times they asked when they were trying to confirm the order price when we came to pay the bill. <br/><br/>At the end of it, I was also require to wander around the dining hall aimlessly with the bill looking for a waitress to take it out of my hands. It ended up that I wandered up to the kitchen area and had to gesture one of the chefs, who rang the bell at the kitchen window to locate one of them. <br/><br/>I hadn't been to this place before, and trust me I will not be going back. I also note some of the other recent review mentioning the terrible service of the place -- not sure who has been hiring these waitresses, but they should really reconsider their employee choices.

Excellent venue! The food is absolutely brilliant and the wait staff are awesome! Highly recommend Captain Melvillle.

Was surprised to read a few negative reviews on here recently. Have been in for dinner twice this week and I have to say, what a fantastic place. The staff really were so lovely and accomadating and remembered us when we returned. And the food! Amazing cheap steak night - waitress explained that they are quality grass fed steaks (nice change from the usual low quality steaks pubs dish out for steak night). Shame I'm not a local as I'd be returning for another visit. Thanks for some great nights Captain!

Greasy food !. My partner took me to this restaurant and I wanted to try their "popular/recommended" dish. It was very greasy ! I would not visit a second time.

So excited to try this place, and my expections were right! The food was lovely just like I thought it would be, although the staff weren't. My partner and I were ignored when we entered, it was 7pm on a Thursday night- not busy yet. A waiter even walked past us and didn't bother to greet us even though we looked blankly lost and confused as to where the eating bit actually was. Our lady that served us could've given a nice friendly vibe if she just cracked a smile. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere with spacious seating at the back and then the bar at the front, but the waiters really need to loosen up to suit the vintage style of jolly sailors.
Debbie
What has happen to this this place, it used to be fantastic place, but now rude staff or no staff to server us. the person who was commanding the direction of the food seem he didn't want to be there, 2 of 3 waiters were nice enough but still couldn't be found.. we waited ages for our food, the bar was more happening than the restaurant, probably better service too. once a regular, probably not anymore... sorry captain your stands have dropped!
Monica
I have been here more than once. the last two times were really good! great service and fantastic food... until tonight. i have been telling some ladies how great the place was. But of course the night I take them to CM was the night that wasnt as pleasant as my previous visits. although i must say there is one particular gentleman who is consistency and friendly with his service - sorry I wish I knew your name because this lash out post is to everyone else but you! <br/><br/>When we arrived we waited at the bar. The guy (I would normally say gentleman because its the polite way to addressing man - but no he wasn't a gentleman) saw we were standing there and did not even acknowledge we were there. People got to the bar after us and still he refused to notice we were there - yeah he was friendly to everyone but us. now how would you feel if you walked into a nice scene expecting it to be welcoming but all you get is ignored? We made our way down to the restaurant area... And can you guess what happened? Yup we were ignored again! The girl said she'd be two seconds - but looked pissed off as. So we just waited. Until the nice gentleman came over to greet us and showed us to our table. (I mean it. he's the nicest one of all of them).<br/><br/>Came round to bill time.. Yes the girl eventually stopped and we got to ask for our bill. I tried to grab her attention a couple of times when we had the money ready... but she walked right passed me. Yup. Again. Our parking time was almost due so as we couldn't get anyone's attention to PAY we walk to the bar n decide to pay there. And yes... It was the bar guy again who ignored us. If you see people approaching, you can at least acknowledge and let us know that you know we are there.<br/><br/>So of course... I can to stop a staff who happened to walk our direction and tell him we just want to pay for our bill? <br/><br/>I don't know what has happened since my previous visits, but tonight just wasn't great for us. I feel somewhat embarrassed for telling everyone how great the place is and how friendly the staff is.. Don't think I'll be going back soon.. And if it's your first time going.. I hope it is more pleasant than what we experienced tonight.

Captain melvives, I would like to write you a congratulatory thank you. I never thought I'd ever join urbanspoon. But your meal I was blessed with, was one of a kind. Urbanspoon how you've done me wrong. 93?! 93?! I'd give this place a 20 if anything. Merely Edible is what I'd call it. I ordered the wagyu burger it came with fries. Now let me say I did not let the burger sit I dug into it straight away. Your bun ... The bottom part was so soggy that I was sitting there wondering which one of your marvelous chef had chewed up my bun and regurgitated it back out to feed me. That salty thing you call a burger left me chugging down a good half a bottle of water in under 5 seconds. I feel like I had just drank a barrel of oil that had been sprinkled with a kg of salt. Thank you for making me feel disgusting and for promoting me to join urbanspoon.

Really good food, not overpriced, great drinks list good place to go for drinks and food. Service was great, highly recommend !

What happened?. Ive been here few times, I kept coming back not just for the exceptional food but the staffs enthusiasm in their job. Unfortunately my last 2 experiences had neither of these qualities. Our waitress was rude and made us feel like she was above us. We asked her for drinks just after we ordered our food and it seemed like a chore to get them for us. She seemed more interested in what was happening at kitchen area and talking to the bloke. We went to the bar for our drinks from then on. <br/>Where has the tall, happy, funny, lady gone. Nothing was too hard or undoable for her. The guy in the bar who is always there is still fun altho he seems a bit edgier then he usually is but will still have a laugh.<br/>I am very disappointed coz this venue i once enjoyed coming too with a vibe you can feel the moment you walk in the door is now a somber place. Whats happened Captain Melville? You have lost that touch you had 6mths ago!! <br/>I wont be returning anytime soon. :(
Calista
Long wait. I've been here 3 times. In my recent visit yesterday, I had the Chili beef nachos which was nice but not fantastic. The previous visit, I had the Captain's burger which honestly is overpriced and not that special. <br/><br/>In all of my visits, the food took an hour or more to be served, even when we preordered a week before. The staff working at the bar was rude, slamming our glass on the table and throwing our change at us (literally). <br/><br/>safe to say, I'll be looking for a new place for our office gathering
Paul
Captain Melville was fine, but I don't think I'll visit again. The restaurant area is really not a place for couples. It might work better with a large group, but the noise levels, the way the long bench style tables are set (with couples sitting opposite one another, about a metre apart), the music and the relatively friendly, but haphazard service, just made it not the best pub experience.<br/><br/>I get the whole "lots of noise makes creates a great buzz" idea, but I'm not sure the medium to high pricing really matches the vibe. I was actually quite exhausted after I left, and the level of noise meant that I didn't order another drink, nor stick around for additional courses (which probably would have gotten them another $50 or so out of us).<br/><br/>I may not be the target market. It is in a backpacker area, although I think the backpackers tend to be in the pub area, rather than the restaurant. I guess I'm not saying that they shouldn't have music, but combined with all the hard surfaces, the music and the noise was just a bit too overwhelming for me.
Emmilio
Second time we have eaten in the restaurant here and unfortunately we won't be returning for a third. Like last time, we waited 5-10 minutes to be seated (we had a booking) whilst being ignored by at least three staff that walked right past us. If it was busy I'd understand but it wasn't and a few staff were just standing by the kitchen and had definitely seen us. Our waitress had a chip on her shoulder and made it seem as though it was a huge effort to take our order and bring us drinks. None of the staff (including manager) were warm, offered a friendly smile, they all seemed preoccupied and surly. It's a shame because the food is great here and the upstairs bar is awesome- however again, bar staff are so nonchalant! Would it kill these people (who work in the service industry!) to smile or be nice when they're serving you?!?
TessleAndPhilip
Amazing food and restaurant! The environment is enjoyable and the service is lovely! The prawn noodle salad is.. amazing! And the salted caramel banana split is a new fave!
Markus
Horrible greeeeeeeasy burger! when the waitress asked how my burger was I told her it was too greasy.. she just laughed and said thats what you need on a sunday. I would never go back for food! yuck!

Such a great find! The food was fantastic and the service was great. Didn't have to wait too long for a table

Great place. Had fun here last Friday, great atmosphere, good beer and my soft shell crap and, pork belly slider were very tasty

Glad to see that the teething problems of slow service we encountered on our first experience here have been ironed out. My fish and chips was delicious and easily the best I've had ever for a very reasonable price. Really happy with how quick the service was and look forward to coming back often.

All Good ~except for Mr Pushy. Went to Melville's to celebrate a friends birthday. Everything was amazing, Parma's Burgers @ $17 on a Tuesday (great value)<br/>Service was excellent, Guy in blue T-shirt who kept joking with us was def a highlight, best service i've had in a long time. <br/>Only thing i can fault the place on is the dorky guy in the glasses who thought he was better than everyone else. Very pushy trying to get us to order, even though friends hadn't arrived yet. Take a chill pill buddy, that's my advice. Otherwise i'd go back.... really wanna try your banana split!
Lola
Amazing food, good prices, great atmosphere!. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family. I recently celebrated my birthday here and it was an absolute pleasure to deal with Mike and the rest of the staff. All my guests were very pleased with the food and drinks and my night couldn't have been more perfect! Thank you Mike and the rest of the Captain Melville staff!

Awesome food and amazing service. A group of 6 of us and our 5 month old enjoyed dinner here on a Friday night. Staff were lovely, attentitive and really went above and beyond. They were great with our daughter and even gave her a cuddle while singing to her. The spacious disabled toilet makes up for the lack of a change table. Would highly recommend.
