Got takeaway for $12 traditional Mee goreng and surprisingly the portion was big & there are seafood, chicken, tofu & veggies in it. Taste was flavoursome. Good for your bucks. I think this would be my go to restaurant.
Cheap tasty Malaysian restaurant.
Fast friendly service.
Update 09/18: the curry laksa isn't too bad. It's creamy and quite generally portioned. Customer service had also improved since 2016. Bumping back up to 4 stars
Update 09/16: this place seems to have changed management.
The staff are a bit of hit and miss. Some are friendly and some seems to be hating life.
Foodwise the quality is still there so its such a shame to see the service level drop a little.

Woke up with strong cravings for Hainanese chicken rice so my partner packed some for me to have at home. Appreciate that they separated the chicken, chilli and rice into different boxes so I can manage the spiciness. The rice was more yellow than usual, and seemed inconsistent - some parts tasted better! I would have also preferred more garlic in my rice. Chilli was equal parts sweet and tangy, a good complement to the chicken. Really enjoyed the chicken - it was tender, flavourful and really reminded me of home. Pricing was standard at $12. Will be back!
Closest Malaysian restaurant around and fortunately a place that can make a passable Hainanese Chicken Rice. Not pretentious, it serves its fare and gets on with it.
A great little joint that does a flavoursome satay and roti, and a succulent ginger hainese chicken. My fellow diners chose the laksa which was a big looking portion I'd come back for.
One of our to-go for Malaysian food! Yummy and reasonably priced. My favourite is definitely the nasi lemak with curry chicken! Only downside, the restaurant is small and it can be quite tricky to get a table during dinner time.
Can’t really fault Penang Road, plenty of options to choose from and they all taste great!
Stewed pork belly with tofu in special sauce is a favourite.
Book early as this little place is generally quiet busy!
Stewed Pork Belly and Tofu on rice. So recently I have been using #ubereats to order this dish as the sauce was really yummy and had a very special taste. Today I finally visited this restaurant to order the same dish fresh.
Although it was still nice, but from what I noticed, the pork belly pieces are at least triple the size bigger than uber ones, but they forgot to put in tofu. Tofu was a bit tasteless. Nevertheless, this dish was filling and delicious :)
Was recommended to come here for good quality food and price. Everything was defiantly tasty and nothing to fault on and price is fair and cheap staff is friendly and patient highly recommended
I absolutely love their Laksa! I don't understand how anyone could say it lacked flavour... I can't even remember how many times I ordered it, but each time it was just delicious. The beef rendang is also worth trying. I dined in several times, and the staff has always been friendly and professional. The only thing is that sometimes the language barrier can be a serious issue, and one time I gave up with explaining my order over the phone (serious food allergy, so I needed to be sure they understood).
Surprisingly good ... more Char Hor Fun ....
It's a difficult task finding a genuine authentic Malaysian hawker - street food in this part of Melbourne, so I wasn't expecting much.
So we've ordered ... well, first dish ... I was quite blown away by their Combination Hor Fun/Char Hor Fun/Ipoh combination or whichever name that you are used to ... man, it was nearly as good as one of my favourite place @Penang Flavour in Doncaster.
Then the second dish, Char Koay Teow/Char Kwee Tiaw ... appeared "angry" and hot with that dollop of Sambal ... they even have fresh cut chillies ... LG, the hotter the better ... Life is Good ... well, my son thinks that they are both very good, but the Char Hor Fun was the winner for me.
Generous portions and we can't finished the last dish ... take away ... the damage for both was less than $24.00 ... that's value for money.
They have other dish, Cantonese influenced on the Menu too ... quaint, comfortable, clean and staff are pleasant and friendly and "funky" ... :-)
Eureka South Melbourne ... a genuine authentic Malaysian hawker food ... Definitely more Char Hor Fun next trip there. JT-26/03/2018.
We are glad to try out this place for lunch. The curry laksa is the best I've ever tried in Melbourne. The soup was very flavourful with fresh ingredients. The prawn noodle was of the same standard. The cendol might taste a bit different from the one in Malaysia but still it's outstanding compared to the other cendol we had tried in Melbourne. The fried wonton was average; too little filling. Overall this place is worth visiting.
Dined here several times for its delish Hainanese chicken rice with barbeque pork. The soup as a side gave refreshing stockiness whenever I ate there. Portion is great. Price is reasonable. Tasty.
I m surprised to see the score for this little nice place as it is such a gem for us! We became regular customers since we first bumped into it - just can’t resisted from the yummy food here! Every dish we ordered so far has been really good and the portion was huge! Especially recommended the tofu entree can’t remember the name but it is second on the entree menu page. Nasi Lemak and curry were good and so was Egg Ho Fun.
Love this place!
Sambal that is given with the nasi lemak is legit. Spicy and tasty. Laksa is totally worth it and curry puffs are yums. Major major downside: cash only. Not cool. Husband went in one day to get takeaway forgetting that they’re cash only. They wouldn’t even put the order through before payment (so he could run to atm and pay when collecting the food). They asked him to leave his wallet with them while he went to the atm. No thanks. Don’t bother going in if you don’t already have cash in your pocket. Feels dodgy.
Legit Malaysian restaurant in South Melbourne. Tasty Char Kway Teow and Chicken and BBQ pork on rice. Everything is piping hot coming out from the kitchen! Which is great and large serving size! Definitely going back to try out the other dishes.
Points for: cheap & cheerful, tasty food
Cash only and order at the counter.
Poorly ventilated, so you will come out smelling like food.
However, you will get authentic, tasty dishes at good prices (for Sth Melb).
I love nasi lemak because of all the different elements on the dish, but they also go so well together.
Curry Chicken Nasi Lemak - rich, creamy, savoury curry and boneless tender chicken.
The coconut rice was also fragrant and compliments the curry so well.
Usually you get the anchovies crispy, but this was marinated in an onion kind of relish, making it soft.
Spoonful of spicy sambal goes a long way throughout the dish.
One of the few Malaysian places that will offer assam laksa, I'll be back to try that.
Points for value, flavour and variety. A decent place for Malaysian in the area.
Penang Road is a small restaurant in South Melbourne. On a Saturday night, it was difficult to find park but the laksa made up for it. The laksa soup was creamy and the chicken was tender. One of the better laksas I've tasted in Melbourne.
Malaysian cuisine isn't my favorite. Overall to say, huge portion to handle. Prices are between 10-20. Mainly Malaysian food. Not highly, but recommend to try.
Enjoyable with good laksa and service. Was quickly seated and food arrived quickly. Laksa could have more tofu, and they could have more vegetarian options, but make up for it with good vegatarian laksa
This place is my standard go to for any visitors who love Malaysian or for take away - the curry laksa is particularly fantastic but I have forced myself to leave the known for their singapore noodles, curry puffs, spring rolls, char kway teow and it's all been great.
The decor isn't much but it's nice and clean, friendly, cheap and consistent. Did I mention I love the laksa?
Did not actually eat there, but I ordered through Foodara. The food was fast and steaming hot. We ordered Ipoh Char Hor Fun, Pork Dumpling, Hokkien Mee and Singapore Soy Pork Belly, we liked the food a lot and were absolutely full. Good food for a really good price.
My Recommendations: Char Hor Fun, Dumpling (nice fillings), Hokkien Mee.
Really love the cat outside the bag, so cute. Felt so happy to see this after a hardworking day 😁
Not a bad place to get affordable Asian food around South Melbourne. The restaurant is small and the last time we went there, we had to queue. Their menu is pretty extensive so there's something for everyone. I tried their hainanese chicken rice and it wasn't bad.
The laksa is very yum. I almost drunk all the soup. It is creamy. The place is quite crowed. I have to share a table with other customer. The chicken inside is tender. A nice restaurant in a word.
We were just strolling in the neighbor hood when we saw this place.. good food and great people. We had plain veg curry puffs (almost like indian samosa), spring rolls, plain roti with satay sauce and traditional mi goreng. Mi goreng was good though the calamari was a bit undercooked. Overall, a good place to dine when you don't want to cook. Definitely coming back!
My favourite food in this restaurant is laksa. The taste is really good! Its not very spicy and just mild for me, i think it can be extra spicy with their sambal sauce with some fresh chili. I think to try their ramen laksa next time...never had a problem with anything being undercooked or overcooked.
The staff was friendly, thoughtful and even she was very busy and uncomfortable.Reasonable price
Amazing little place!! The food is always incredible, portion sizes are very generous and all of the dishes are very reasonably priced. They are also happy to adjust dishes on the menu to suit your tastes which is good.
My only advice would be to get in early because this place fills up fast!
For far too long I was voyaging across the city to Flemington to find a decent bowl of Laksa. But luckily for me, the voyages are finally - I have managed to find an incredible bowl of fragrant creamy laksa just a stone's throw away from my front door. Penang Road on Clarendon Street in South Melbourne is everything you want from a cheap and cheerful Malaysian restaurant - byo (wine only), quick service, cheap price tag and ridiculously delicious food. The vegetable laksa at Penang House is hard to go past - filled to the brim with fresh, crisp vegies, this bowl of fragrant soup is just oozing with flavour.
Surprisingly open on a public holiday, we stopped by for a quick lunch while we were in the area. The interior is somewhere between take away joint and restaurant, with a nice, cozy decor and friendly staff. We ordered some entrees and a meeting goreng / laksa, both which were fantastic, especially for the price. Expect to pay $10-$15 for your meal, with entrees
Food is to die for. I went there 3-4 times and every time whatever I tried was so great. Chilli prawns, noodles, stir fries. We had an issue with pepper chicken once, but the staff replaced it immediately. To top it staff remembered us next time we visited. Good food, great service.
Ordered their BBQ chicken rice and BBQ chicken & BBQ Pork with rice. Have noticed that you get better cut of meat if you come earlier in the day. Their char kuey teow is my favourite. It has the wok taste and comes with fish cake and chinese sausage and side sambal. Laksa is pretty good too. The staff always greet you when you walked in, quick and friendly service. Lots of takeaway orders as well. Plenty of good food to go around so don't miss out!
Been a customer here for years and it has been a good experience. I have two favourite dishes here, salted fish fried rice, which i had yesterday, and laksa. They also provide pretty good selection of chili if you ask but my preference is just fresh cut chilli with no soy sauce. The service is quite decent too and the food came out pretty fast.
A nice M'sian restaurant serving its famous dish- Curry Laksa $11.50 with heaps of seafood, chicken, bean shoots and very flavorsome. I had the Msia BBQ Chicken Rice for $10.00 and serving is adequate. The chili sauce was a bit sweet to my liking but overall it was o.k. Fast service. Cash only and get in early to secure a seat during lunch hour. Lunch sets comes with a iced tea too. It does serve Nasi Lemak, Claypot noodles, Har Mee and Rice dishes as well.
A staple of my work eating has been at a well priced, well-placed Malaysian-styled cafe called Penang Road on Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. I’ve eaten there into the double digits easily although there’s only one dish that I really order (or recommend) and that’s the amazing fried chicken chop. I’ve ordered this enough times to know who’s in the kitchen on that day and fingers crossed you get May – she’s the business. Avoid big groups as getting a table can be trickier in peak hours although the service itself is like my Asian maths teacher, efficient and short.
Good service, food prepared rather quickly. Wife likes the taste of the har mee (prawn noodles), says it's one of the better ones she's had in Melbourne so far. Cosy environment, just feels like a good place to have a meal at.

Customer service had improved lots from the past year, the food is still yummy, love all the laksa very flavorsome. Efficient during lunch hours, and also a Good place if you feel like Malaysian.
Small restaurant on clarendon street but full of flavours. I had curry laksa and it was awesome. Portion size is huge and i like it ! Ice tea was too sweet for my liking. They don't take orders on the table but they do serve on the table. Restaurant is clean and accessible by tram.
The place was good and decent with smiling staff and quick service. Everything on the menu is good. Let's start with few main points:
Food - 4/5
Service - 4/5
Ambience - 3/5
Quantity of food - 4/5
Value for money - 4/5
Had my work bday lunch there on Friday. Probably one of the best restaurants on Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. With a wide selection of dishes to choose from at an affordable price - all seemed heavenly. Food came out quickly from a small kitchen, so they clearly have a Flash Gordon in the back helping out. If you're ever in the area and your looking for a great sit down lunch. Look no further, Penang Rd is the place to be.
I was wavering between 3.5 and 4 and decided to give it a 4... The food itself to be honest is probly not outstanding, but it's served really quickly and nice enough to be enjoyable, especially on a cold winter day or night.
Catching up with a few friends while in Melbourne, we decided to hit this restaurant. i ordered a Vegetarian Laksa, without egg and with extra spice. The dish was amazing, and I could really taste the fusion of the curry and the coconut milk. Wasn't too happy about the lack of spice, but the food was amazing. Definitely going next time!!!!
Cheap, quick and delicious. The vegetable curry laksa is amazing. Staff are very friendly (perhaps a little shy) and service is attentive. Well worth a look.
Lovely little cheapie place on Clarendon St Melbourne.
Previously lived closer and went here at least 3 times a week.
From the Fish Curry Laksa, to the Nasi Lemak, its all great and all cheap at about $10 a meal.
The only issue is there are not too many seats inside and sometimes you miss out, and also I think new management took a few of my preferred items from the menu.
Otherwise a great little asian place to eat.
Cheap, convenient and tasty.
Always great food and friendly service me and my partner eat here regularly and we always leave feeling full and satisfied with out breaking the bank, oh and we love the fact that you can get an iced milo so yummy👍🏻
Har Mee was delicious. The BBQ chicken rue wasn't great. It's just regular steamed rice, not chicken rice - or of it is it does t have the taste.
Iced Milo was awesome. They make a milo dinosaur!
Great menu and customer service. I ordered the Thai green curry with chicken which tasted amazing. This family restaurant is a great place to come to in Southbank
Sometimes a bit of a queue to order/pay, but meals are very quick. This place is always busy, and for good reason. Great, simple, cheap food. Fantastic for a quick, yummy lunch packed with flavour and leaves you full to the brim. Convenient if you work nearby.
Love it, get the laksa or curry, happy tummy. Always friendly staff, easy to find good atmosphere, fast take away. Wishing I didn't have to type so much just want to eat there again.
They do good laksa, fried chicken ribs and chicken wrap. Service team has changed and become more a lot more friendly. Good Malaysian food option for South Melbourne
Greta little place with extra friendly staff who are always smiling. They even let me order and return to pay as it is a cash only eatery. Food exceeded expectations. Fresh, flavourful, and felt like I was back in Malaysia.
Penang Road is a Malaysian restaurant on South Melbourne's Clarendon Street. It has a large and diverse menu of Malaysia-style hawker food. If in doubt, go for the BBQ Chicken and BBQ pork with rice. It is a generous serve of tasty roast chicken and char siu pork with fragrant Hainanese-style chicken rice and a soup with fish balls . My only minor complaint is that it is a little on the sweet side and is probably laced with MSG. Those with spicier tastes might want to try the Nasi Lemak, another Malaysian staple, with coconut rice, sambal, egg and anchovies and which comes in a number of customized variations; with curry or deep fried chicken. My favourite is the one with the chicken chop (no bones!).
This place is brilliant for a quick & cheap asian fix in a surprisingly homely setting.
With a great choice of laksa, curries and stir fry dishes, the value-for-money and choice equation adds up perfectly.
Always busy which is probably the best endorsement.
A great local to have. And the staff are hilarious.
Overall good value for money & decent Malaysian fare for this hood. Laksa was quite decent. Hainanese chicken rice was forgettable though - chicken was bit soggy & they ran out of chicken rice (but gave us coconut rice free of charge).
Good curry laksas in South Melbourne. It's good, not amazing. If you're in the area and craving some hot soup, this is an option. Friendly staff and outdoor seating for a nice warm day is a big plus (without the crowds from the CBD lanes).
Had the char kway teow. Fairly authentic Penang style. Very friendly staff. Would recommend. The chicken rice was quite nice too. Fragrant and not too oily.
It was a pleasurable dinner and I can’t wait to have a bite of the delightful Mango Chicken in my next visit.
Great food, fast service, very clean and friendly staff very happy. Have been buying take away food for awhile never grow tired of the the menu
Portion was generous, in fact too huge for an Asian stomach. For such taste in ang moh place, this is a good deal. However, if I were to benchmark vs. Penang/Malaysia gastronomical standard, it's slightly below. Char keu tew lacked of "wok hei", prawn noodle and white curry laksa somehow the taste not fully absorbed, though soup is OK, likely because of the mihun and mee (noodle) used are different. Today's day 2 lockdown lifted in Melbourne, rules aren't strict here for dine in (need not show Vax cert) which can be a deterrent to risk averse ppl. Perhaps best to take away. Staff service is good, overall it's still worth trying, very close to home if you miss Malaysian food.
