Review Heartattack And Vine - Melbourne

Steve Garrard
For me this is the best roast pork and slaw roll in Melbourne. Get one with the lot. Friendly efficient staff. Coffee is v good also. Its 5 stars for food and service. I do takeaway but great spot to eat in.

We ordered one of each from the dinner selections displayed. Didn't expect much taste-wise as we came for the atmosphere. But super impressed with ALL the plates. That corn dish is the best we've ever had, we won't be having corn anywhere else now! Spanish hot choc with orange and Chili had a great kick and is good qual.

The Heartattack and Vine cafe is a perfect Melbourne cafe for inside or outside eating.
Belal El-Baba
delicious tapas offerings, great ambience, and lovely service (:

Delicious small dishes that change all the time to choose from. 30$ per person should be enough for dinner (food only). Unique flavours in food and cocktails make it one of our favourite places to come and celebrate something, or just have fun.

Awesome selection of alcoholic beverages. I was keen on perusing their beer collection and found some pretty exotic beers that you just aren't going to find at Liquorland or even Dan Murphies. When I got stumped due to the massive range, the helpful guy working there gave me some suggestions.

A nice place to have breakfast or lunch. The place has indoor and outdoor seating. The place has specials which are off menu. The menu is adequate and the coffee is good. The staff members are very helpful and their meals are good. I enjoyed the meal and the place. A good place to visit

Delicious filter coffee and awesome breaky! The tortilla ciabatta was insane! Very reasonably priced and great service!

Can always count on this place for a good coffee and sandwich!
Best hit chocolate in melbourne so far

A really good concept with drinks, small snack foods for a very reasonable price.
Everything we selected from their cicchetti options was fabulous but I will say it would have been better if they had a small menu to the side listing what was on offer for today, especially for those with any dietary requirements. In saying that, the staff were very helpful in letting you know what was on offer.
It was also a bit cramped at points but I think we were perhaps not sitting at the best spot for space being near to the door on a shared table.
However overall for the quality of the food and drinks and general vibe I would definitely recommend as a place to visit!

Came here during midday / lunch time rush on a weekday, was super busy and staff were not as friendly as they could be upon first entering the shop to find a seat. I get it that they’re busy but for a busy place, it’s good to still make sure customers find a seat.
We found a seat eventually after a bit of shuffling around, ordered coffees and a ciabatta crispy pork roll to share. It was delicious. Wouldn’t come back during peak hour but would love to come back and try other things on the menu!

The vibe here is just amazing, definitely one of my favorite places to just enjoy the day and be in the moment. I loved the sandwich and coffee had here as well, it was really good and filling. I've come back a few times, and each time was a good experience
Eating Away Melbourne
Had a lovely Sunday lunch here at Heartattack. Staff were all friendly, the roll I had was yummy with punchy flavours, Iced latte and OJ were both nice too. No wonder they are my friends go to place after exercising every Sunday!

The place open all day, is great place have cup of coffee and the breakfast roll was very delicious, the evening vibe is quite nice but the food for the night was bit overpriced.

This place is a really special. The atmosphere is so chilled, warm and calming. Drinks are great, they only have Italian wines and spirits so if you’re looking at having a shot of tequila, you might want to go elsewhere. Food is very tasty and well cooked but I wash they had a wider selection. The dessert panna cotta was to die for! Sooo good!
I recommend this place for a date or a catch up with a small group of friends.

After seeing the movie “Chef” I kind of expect a generous tasty Cubano whenever I see a roll of bread. The Italian style toasted prosciutto or mozzarella rolls are good here, but 3 stars means I can make these at home. Looking around at the clientele I think most of them wouldn’t know how to turn on their sandwich makers so I guess this place is a community service for the sandwich challenged. Meh

The warmest service within a cosy setting that still buzzes with excitement. Tapas in the evening, order at the bar. We will be back for sure.

Normally we go here for the tapas and drinks just before our movie night at Nova. The tapas are good and reasonably priced. I like their chilli hot chocolate. It has a little kick and sweet taste. Good wines too :)
Fatcat
Simple menu, lovely space and really friendly staff. The coffee tastes great and the food is also very fresh. This is a really nice, chill place to hang on the weekend.
SuziEats
Hands down the best porchetta you will ever have. Served in a ciabatta roll with mustard and a tomato sauce. And a side serve of slaw. I just keep on going back. You have to get there early because it sells out fast.

Managed to snaffled the last pastrami baguette here one fateful lunchtime, and it did not disappoint. From the dill to the pickled cabbage to the pastrami... it was incredible. I wasn't in love with my pinot noir (perhaps the wrong pick for such strong food flavours), but it did the job. Exceptional food experience. One of the best in the area, and not too bad at $15 per fancy baguette. I'll be back.

Heart Attack and Vine is a trendy coffee and wine bar in Carlton. The small cafe with outdoor seating often is home to numerous late afternoon drinkers sipping on craft wines over a delicate charcuterie board, or indulging in one of the many fine pastries on offer accompanied by spectacular coffee.
The appealing late closing hours of Heart attack and Vine and the fact that they source their beans from one of my favourite locals being Wide Open Road coffee I was in the area on a late Sunday afternoon and thought to treat myself to a brew before heading off to the cinema across the road.

Greeted by friendly staff we sat in front of the coffee bar and were supplied with a drinks menu due to already having dinner plans. The order and pay at the counter service is easy and quick and before we knew it our hot beverages were placed in front of us. Feeling rather adventurous we sipped on a divine and indulgent Spanish hot chocolate with chilli and orange zest as well as a equally as excellent long black. The hot chocolate was a creamy, thick and rich luscious drink. Not overly sweet the the zesty hit of orange resembles the taste of a jaffa chocolate whilst the subtle kick of chilli brought out the flavour of the bitter coco. The long black was flawless. Flavoursome, aromatic, tart fruity textures on the palate with a silky velvet mouthfeel, this brew was throughly enjoyed.

Heart Attack and Vein is a great spot for a bite to eat and drink in a relaxing modern environment. Staff are very accommodating and the extensive drinks list has something for all. Will certainly be back when I’m in the area as the coffee is seriously good :)

Been here for some grab ‘n’ run sandwiches in the middle of some markets, and was very pleasantly surprised!
Pretty sure the Heartattck bit was referring to the size of the sandwich though 👍🤣👌 Would be keen to return for the vino portion.

Small menu but tasty lunch offerings with daily specials. Food served with pride. Good option for takeaway. Friendly service. Porchetta roll recommended. Good place to grab good coffee all day.
Dumba
Cozy wine bar with a variety of tapas. What you order is dependent upon availability, which can limit what you try. However, the food is good and the wine list is varied.
Ms Picky On Coffee
Café with a soul! Shame we have had big breakfast and didnt have any room or the time to sit in it and enjoy the ambiance! Poops in for take away coffees as they use wide open road coffee which I wanted to try. It is again “better than your average Sydney coffee” but I wouldn’t go for it if I have another good option.

I shared a few small dishes with my mum here and I have to say almost all of them where delicious! My personal favs were the crispy Brussel sprouts and the polenta crisps. I didn't love every single one of the amuse-bouches but I think that is really down to personal taste.
Andrew Shelton
A great little bar. The helpful staff always try their best to find you a table, which isn’t always easy given how popular it is. Nice environment with very enjoyable tapas-style food and good drinks.
Jeremy K
Their crispy pork sandwich is sensational. Highly recommended! Order it with extra crackling. It's a good place to hang out for lunch on a weekend too.

EDIT June 2018: the porchetta roll is still on the menu and still absolutely sensational. 10/10.
Jade M Smith
My favourite place near Melbourne Uni for coffee. Really cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and quality cappuccino art. Although a takeaway coffee is still fantastic, would definitely recommend sitting in the window seats. Great to just people watch or catch up with friends.
Margarita Pracatan
The porchetta roll is ouuuut of control good!!! Includes succulent meat and crispy, light crackling and zingy salsa verde. OATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great espresso martinis here! Nice food also. Music was ok but a great place for a low key night with some tasty wine and food 💫🙂 will be back 👍🏼
Dazz Inator
Great service from exceptional staff. Very friendly atmosphere. Food was excellent. A different spin on Italian style food. Weekends very busy after 7.30 no table bookings.

Espresso martini was to die for. Red wine from Italy also really good, although they did not have the one I originally wanted from the menu. Two of the three tapas we got were pretty good, one was OK-but just OK. Overall quite a nice experience, only issue is- indoors small tables are REALLY small, and there is very little space between one table and the other, makes it a tad awkward for when you want to get up from your chair and there is physically no room to slide your chair out from under the table...
Stunsail
Great coffee and friendly service. Rolls and brioches for lunch (and throughout the day) are pretty basic but serve their purpose. It's a nice spot that gets more raves than I've seen reason for on my visits but to each their own
Benjamin Mior
Had the pork Roll and house wine.. all very tasty and the service was spot on. Will visit again when back in the area because I hear the meatball roll is wild. Highly recommend when on lygon street ✌🏻

Heartattack and Vine is definitely a new Carlton favourite. Small tapas-style Italian plates are prepared with beautiful finesse and they are great value. The ambience is very moody and dark, causing you to lean into conversation as you share nibbles over a fantastic negroni!

Superb venue great space lovely wine list and really first rate service, popped in for a late nite post movie tipple and will certainly return to try more

I'd like to share with you guys today a refreshing Italian restaurant located on Lygon Street. Now I know what you guys are probably thinking. Italian men standing at the front of their restaurant with menus, herding people in like sheeps! This is actually one of my pet hates, and I would never recommend a restaurant that does this. Heartattack and Vine is the total opposite of this unwelcoming stigma. They let their showcase of food, and the faces of happy diners do the marketing. We've walked past Heartattack and Vine many times after dinner. Everyone always looks happy and relaxed dining here. Having missed out on trying their food so many times, food frustration kicked in, and we made an exclusive trip to Carlton to try them out.

Heartattack and Vine is an Italian tapas style restaurant. They have an outdoor seating area outside, but since it was a warm day when we went, we opted for some indoor air con goodness. Dimly lit lighting sets a romantic and intimate scene. They showcased all their beautiful cichetti (tapas) at the front behind some thick glass. Staff were welcoming with big smiles on their faces, and we were seated straight away on the communal curbside bench. The dining area was small and cosy, and they soon realised how big our appetites were! We ended up taking up the space of 4 people with our food. The concept was simple, you walk up and pick what cichetti you want and either pay on the spot or start a tab. Cichetti were $3.50 each or 3 for $10. More substantial items such as oysters or house salads, had their own prices.

After ordering 2 Italian reds, we were on a mission. The cichetti were great value and we pretty much tried them all. I was asking what everything was just to satisfy my curiosity, but I knew I was going try all of them! We were truly impressed by the variety offered, and it wasn't too carb heavy, which was a bonus. The dishes were simple yet with all the ingredients combined they worked effortlessly. The produce was extremely fresh, proof is with the seafood. It's hard to disguise freshness with seafood, the mussels and oysters here were spot on! Figs, quail eggs, mascarpone cheese are some of the other delicious delights you may find on the day. I say 'may' because they are constantly changing their dishes to the seasonal produce. I'm not expecting to eat the same things next time I come to here, and that's an exciting thought!

Heartattack and Vine offers an abundance of food to cater for any picky or adventurous eater. I don't expect any two persons to eat as much as we did, but if you do decide to go a bit crazy, it certainly won't send you broke. You'd be hard to find value like this, with quality to match. I have a feeling this will be one our regular go to places, and I hope it will be yours too!

- D

Love this place when it's a cafe in the morning. The coffee is great and the pastries they sell are amazing- the croissant is bliss, and makes every morning the much more buttery and delightful. Also great wine bar at night- delicious tapas and nice selection of drinks.
The Pet Roo
What a fantastic concept, Italian Tapas! After the movies, we stumbled across the road and found this little beauty. All the food looks great and we shared 6 different plates and paid $20 each ranging from beetroot arancini to fried polenta with parmesan. Everything tasted incredible and washed down with my Campari cocktail. It's a do it yourself type of place, order what you want and pay which we did in stages (or they will set up an account) which enabled us to pace ourselves with the food, help yourself to water, cutlery and plates. I have to come back as I want to try everything on the menu.

I don't usually like traditional Spanish tapas but this place and the Venetian flavours were great. Variety of choices and each person in our group got the chance to go to the counter and choose a range options. Very reasonably priced food, you'll spend the big bucks on drinks.
Gursharan Chana
Nice place to go for a drink after work and has some nice share plates. Also has a very tasty porchetta sandwich for lunch and nice coffee, can recommend.

Try all their rolls...and the prawn brioche. Sit by the bar if you are on your own or with a friend. Great atmosphere and staff. Highly recommended and will be back for more rolls...more

Drinks: Aperol Spritz, Montenegro Spritz, Spanish Martini. A very romantic location, don't make the mistake of coming here with someone unless you want them to fall in love! At night it's candlelit, mood lighting, small-ish tables that encourage you to lean in. The drinks are to a pretty good standard, they were inventive and had a strong flavour. The food looked excellent from what I saw on other tables, but unfortunately did not try any.

The bar itself is big and you can watch the bartenders do their thing. Even when it's busy it's still pretty quiet at the tables themselves (no need to shout to make yourself heard), and the atmosphere is maintained. It's not really a place to come to get messy. Could recommend and would re-visit definitely.

Really great place to tapis or wine an hour away. A Thursday night & we were really happy with the very tasty treats & reasonable prices....delicious!!! I've marked this down from 5 to 3 because of staff attitude.

We tried ordering at the bain maree but the music was too loud & we couldn't hear. We repeatedly asked the staff member to move to where we could hear her (as the glass counter is too high) without success. She just shrugged & continued in the same way, knowing we were struggling to hear her. Her nonchalant attitude might have been hip for some, but we found her rude & we nearly gave up after 5 attempts to order.

Later I stood at the cashier counter for more than 5 mins to ask them to adjust an overcharge. Nobody acknowledged me standing there, even though there were 4-5 staff members within touching distance from me.

The food is very tasty & it's a nice place, however the staff were not customer focused... well not last night, anyway.

Lovely ambience, tapas were great and I didn't choose a thing, let someone plan the dining experience which was lovely. A cynar spritzer completed the package.

Love this place. It's quite unique in how they operate. Order at the bar find somewhere cosy to sit. Perfect for one on one catch up or small groups. Simple menu of Venetian tapas and the drinks list is easy and reasonably priced. Very cool atmosphere, and layout. The meatballs are delicious and fried olives👍🏻👍🏻 a variety of what they call cichetti - all was delicious.

I'm yet to eat at Heartattack and Vine (menu does look amazing though) but the coffee is consistently perfect, baristas always full of character to put a smile on your face. The decor is homely yet funky. Favourite coffee place on Lygon by a long shot.

Great little place, really cool vibe, right at the top of Lygon St. As soon as we sat down there were bottles of water and nibbles on the table (olives, potato crisps, pickles). We were a group of 12 and had the tasting menu for $25/person, where you get the chef's selection of various types of ciccheti (basically tapas / finger food). I was initially tentative as you don't often get enough food with these set menus, but boy was I wrong. Seven courses later, and we were so full we nearly couldn't finish. Nearly. ;)

Food was well thought out, clever in execution and presentation, though perhaps a little one-dimensional in flavour at times. Staff pretty attentive and friendly.

Great drinks list, small but we'll thought out selection of beers and wines, as well as some great sherries and other fortifieds.

Bonus points for catering a different selection for the one vegetation we had on the table.

Only real complaint was that it might be been a little tight in terms of space, you could certainly hear every single bit of conversation from the neighbouring diners! The background music could've been a little quieter too.

Will definitely come back again. Oh, and Pidapipo gelato a couple of doors down rounded out the night perfectly.

Fresh made veg sandwich with plenty of flavour. Friendly staff. I enjoyed a fresh mixed ginger beer soda. Cutest little table. The busy lunch crowd seemed to be universally happy with their sandwiches.
Claire
Excellent evening - staff are friendly and passionate about the food; the wine menu is small but the selection of good and well priced. I had the cicchetti which was both well priced and delicious, plus there was a lot of choice. I would definitely recommend!
Cafe_Queen
Love it here. A Melbourne treat. Great service & a great concept. Food is hearty and typical Melbourne. A soul beats hard here. Great wine list, ammmmmmazing coffee. Get there!
JJ_Restaurant_King
Super cool, super friendly. I see this place becoming a star on Lygon street, amazing baguettes, fun staff and super sexy coffee. A must try just for the wine list - small and funky!
Gary D
Very cool, very Melbourne. Quality concept. Staff on the ball, fun yet professional. The porchetta roll to die for. Great wine list & Moritz by the can. The coffee was outstanding. Found a real winner. Love their Wide Open Road in Brunswick. Well done!!!
Ross Crisp
It's not every day that you get served coffee and lunch by a prize winning author (Emily Bitto winner of the Stella). Even when she is not there, coffee and and the roast pork roll is pretty damn good. Other advantage: close to Readings.
Food Dine Roll
Amazing place!! The concept and the way they run the place is so cool.

Atmosphere is very very nice, cozy and local gems. After we got seated at the bar we then got greeted that we can order over the counter. We saw so many people carrying amazing looking tapas and we're pleasantly surprised that we can just pick whatever available at the counter (they all $3.50). This is such an awesome concept!

Cocktails are great. Staffs and owner are amazing and very very helpful with the menu and very attentive. Even given us some testing of the wine before order. Would love to come back for breakfast and lunch!! Definitely now our hang out spot if we come for dinner on lygon! It's not too loud. Perfect for first date, hanging out or catching up
Munchkin
Love! Ordered a coffee and came with small bottle of tonic water palette-cleanser. It's always nice to get pleasantly surprised. Great interior setting, outdoor cover came on straight away when the rain came. Definitely would visit again when in the area and try out the menu options.

Beautiful staff, cosy spot. Great for bringing in work to do away from desks. I love swinging past on my way to uni and picking up a Spanish Hot Chocolate... they're addictive as anything! Staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. If you're dining in, be sure to try their Venetian tapas selection - I still dream about a certain caramelised pumpkin creation I tried a while back. If you're hungry at midday, the vegetarian roll (with homemade falafel) will satisfy any food-sized hole in your stomach!
Kate Bolton
In the morning this place welcomes you with amazing coffee, awesome service (highly recommend the breakfast rolls). Come back at night and they have awesome tapas, beautiful wine and beer options and a lovely atmosphere. One of my favourite Melbourne finds.

Great spot for lunch - don't be deceived by the old 'Vegetarian Restaurant' sign out the front, probably from where Shakahari used to be (another awesome vegetarian Carlton eatery now on Faraday St).

Good array of gourmet rolls to be made up. I was looking for something without bread and Heartattack and Vine offer all their rolls in bread free versions. Yay to that. So I had the prawn brioche roll ($14) (but sans brioche roll, ha) and ordered a side of beetroot falafel ($3). The prawn on coleslaw were maybe a bit on the blander side (I'm sure would be amazing on the brioche roll) but the strong garlic flavours paired perfectly, and all for under a twenty. Will be back.

Serving up Venetian tapas in finger food style options at prices that don't pinch your pocket, Heartattack and Vine are situated in the ideal spot to cater to Melbourne's hip and happening. Cicchetti with Italian wines for din dins - they were kinda destined to succeed from the moment they opened their doors.
EK
For starters, best spritz in the city. And I have tried them all.
Secondly, the arancini balls are delicious and I love the porchetta roll with the vegetarian zuchhinni roll also fantastic. The staff are always so lovely and efficient, and coffee is GREAT.
Lisa Farrell
Cool cafe with some alternate menu options and good coffee. A lot of the menu items are suggested for sharing but check on the specials for what's best that day.

Classy. Swish food. Cute waitstaff. Kinda more pricey than average but worth Taking someone to impress them with your sophisticated, effortlessly chic taste.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
Co-owners Emily Bitto and Nathen Doyle, also responsible for Wide Open Road and A Minor Place, opened up Heartattack and Vine earlier this year. It’s a cosy space that suits couples, groups and solo diners, with 40 seats indoors, and 30 outdoors. Heartattack and Vine serves breakfast and pastries, then a variety of rolls for lunch, but come evening it transforms into a cinchetti bar.
Long Lunch
Love it!! Simple, delicious good value food, great coffee and thoughtful choices of wine. Friendly and competent staff. Marked down slightly for not having table service.
Table To Paper
What a lovely addition to Lygon St. I visited Heartattack and Vine with 4 friends last Thursday and was overall very impressed by the service, food and ambience of the place. It can be a bit tricky fitting in a large group in a place like this but we were able to share a communal table with a group of others - no big issue here. Heartattack and Vine specialises in 'Cicchetti', small bites which are traditionally enjoyed with wine ($3.50 each or 3 for 10). Most of the food is displayed in their front counter and ordered directly via the counter, there's no table service but you do have the option to start a tab. The wait staff were very helpful in guiding us through the menu offerings and selecting a suitable amount of Cicchetti and sharing dishes for the table. Given there were 5 of us, we were able to try out quite a few of the dishes here, about 4 types of Cicchetti, two serves of the meatball dishes and the salad of the day (kale and parsnip) which was so good that we had to order a second serving! Also recommend the meatballs and pork arancini.
Overall, Heartattack and Vine is the kind of place you could spend hours in during the evening with some good wine (..maybe mulled wine since its winter?) and great conversations. Can't wait to visit again.

Happily Surprised. Lived in the area for the last ten years and seen many places come and go. Was delighted by the kindness of the staff in my first visit. After a long walk with a baby in pram stopped in for a quiet sit down. Staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome, with a pram even my compact one cafes tend to turn their noses up. Staff helped me get the pram the few steps so i could sit up the back. Where there was some more space.

Found the coffee to be lovely and the ginger and quince cake to be delicious. These guys actually inow how to make a strong coffee when asked!

AND it wasn't a once off have returned with bub and my mum and found the staff to again be attentive and friendly.

Great service. Warm and Welcoming
Food: generous and yum
Coffee: lovely

When the barista gives you a takeaway coffee without a word or a look cuz he's too busy talking to his friend you know he's not there to serve customers. Yet another cafe losing it on the service front for thinking they're way too cool for you.

Heartattack and Vine is a little modern Italian café or you may say a restaurant located at the renowned center of Italian food (Lygon). The restaurant was just opened less than a year ago. At Heartattack and Vine, you can grab a table wherever you want (indoor or outdoor) but you have to order at the cashier and the staff will deliver the food at your table...

Heart Attack and Vine. Attended with 2 friends last Saturday and we loved it!
Watching the guy chop up the pork and crackled sold two of us and it was divine!
Our other friend had the vegetarian option and she also loved it.
We found the service to be great and friendly!
Would definitely go back!

Worst customer service ever and the food isn't great either.. How long do you need to stand at the entrance in a line up of 6 people before one of the 4 staff members acknowledges you? A greeting of 'hello darling' is so tacky. The staff are slow. And the coffee is bad. I'd prefer a coffee milk from the newsagent. It's a cool venue and fit out - get some real staff in there who know about food and coffee.

Favourite on Lygon Street. Best coffee I've had in Melbourne, or possibly even ever. Delicious food and nice surroundings. Could spend all weekend here. Staff are lovely as well

Some wonderful wait staff, some rude. As someone who frequents this establishment regularly and loves the usually polite and friendly wait staff, I was appalled by the rude service of one waiter on 18/03, who disregarded my instruction to separate tabs, and afterwards literally blamed us for what had essentially been his mistake, and declined to offer an apology in the face of all evidence. Really disappointing attitude and customer service and not soon forgotten.

Amazing. The food was amazing
I like that u can spend as little or as much as u want to-
Everything was fresh and inviting.
I can't wait to come back again

Overpriced, for what it offers. There are lots to choose from on Lygon street.

Overpriced food. Overpriced. I have been dying to try the porchetta roll as I had one in Italy last year and have remembered it as one of my all time favourite rolls. I finally got here and have to say I was sorely disappointed. When the roll arrived it was nicely presented on a chopping board etc however there was no more than 100gms of porchetta chopped and diced into tiny pieces to try and spread across the whole roll. What is this??? Where was the nice slices of porchetta I was waiting for? The flavours were nice however you could barely taste the porchetta. The roll with a small side of coleslaw was $18 and was definitely not worth this price. I felt like this is one of those places that thinks Melbournians will pay a lot of money for anything that is trendy and not because we necessarily know good food and value from bad. I was looking forward to this becoming one of my locals however won’t be returning. (BTW the roll in Rome cost 6euros and had about triple the amount of porchetta in it)

Great Place To Relax. Super friendly owners are the highlight of this place as is the well the well thought out and cosy space. You can tell a lot of love has gone into this place and we thoroughly enjoyed having a glass of wine and talking with one of the owners whilst we were there. The wine we had was good and Coburg on tap was a great addition. Would definitely go back.

Great menu. How very refreshing in an area so ripe for contemporary cuisine, definitely raises the bar over what Lygon Street has been serving up for decades ..... :( .... great decor, good vibe and great menu but the days of handing over $4.00 for a bad coffee in Melbourne should almost be over. Not yesterday. Weak, watery and lip burning hot. I put it down to random event. Will go again though, deserving of good things Heartattack and Vine.

Just what Lygon St needed. Casual drinking and eating, can't remember the Italian name for it but kind of like Tapas but not. Lovely staff, wish it was open slightly later than 11pm.
Anna082
Awesome decor, awesome vibe. Friendly staff. If you go for an afternoon drink, stick around for the cicchetti which starts around 6-6.30pm. The polenta and baccala cicchetto was especially delicious! It's quite like being in Venice, but the closest thing to it here in Melbourne. I highly recommend Heartattack and Vine and will be visiting again soon!

Good, good be great. HA&V ticks most of the boxes: Decor, vibe, service, drinks list. Relaxed bafe where it is easy for a quick or long stay.

Two improvements would make it great: A vinyl turntable for music and the food could be improved as it needs to stay warm under the lights. I would like it to be great as I live close by.

Best coffee on Lygon and cool chef. Great coffee in the window of this great new cafe ... About time Lygon got into the grind... And I spotted the lead singer of Saskwatch in there today adding to the cool vibe

Casual Cicchetti. A cicchetti bar that shares its name with a Tom Waits album. Coincidence? Yet to be confirmed! Heart Attack and Vine is the new kid on the block in Carlton. Located just past all the hustle & bustle of the main strip Emily Bitto and Nathen Doyle’s casual italian-style tapas bar is a welcome addition to Lygon Street. The premise is on the smaller side and the ‘menu’ even smaller. Offering up breakfast rolls & pastries from 7am and a choice of free-range porchetta roll, poached prawns on brioche or a vegetarian ciabatta from 11am. By night a menu no longer exists and patrons are encouraged to peruse a glass cabinet of cicchetti (small plate / tapas) options. At $3.50 each or 3 for $10 the bill would add up fast for anyone after a decent feed. Having said that, the intrigue of what is to come out of the tiny kitchen and into the cabinet next had me glued to my seat at the bar. I opted for the mixture of 3 different tapas and was a tad surprised at the complimentary addition of some Thins original crisps as edible garnish on my board of goodies. Not that they didn’t go down well with my Stone & Wood pacific Ale, but I’m personally unsure of their connection to Italian gastronomy. I found the pork & meatballs flavoursome but borderline cold having sat under 2 heat lamps in an open glass cabinet since being prepared. The anchovy & garlic stuffed olives fried in panko crumbs were deliciously crunchy and by no means appropriate for a first date ;) In true foodie style I saved the best of my fare until last! A crostini of goat’s cheese, walnuts, chives & grapes was 2 mouthfuls that I did my best to savour. Such a flavour combination that resulted in quite the party in my mouth! All in all this intimate cicchetti bar is a cute addition to the northern suburbs, providing a laid back atmosphere for an after work catch up over a few bites & beverages. If you are looking for a hearty authentic Italian meal then keep on walking, but if good vibes & good times are on the cards then be sure to pay a visit. Get in early as the place fills up fast from 7pm!

an all day eatery that’s taken cues from the European model of a light breakfast, a quick hearty lunch, and a relaxed evening of aperitifs, good wine and cicchetti.
De-brief Me
Keen to try somewhere new, we hauled our children to the opening day of Emily Bitto & Nathen Doyle’s new digs – named after Tom Waits’ 1980 album. Heartattack & Vine is a specialty coffee & neighbourhood bar inspired by travels to Italy where hospitality and good food were first and foremost. Nicky Adams is behind the Venetian cicchetti bar’s design which is warm and inviting, and a little bit rustic. The staff are eager to please and the pastries on offer look especially inviting, as does the succulent porchetta that stands front and centre as you enter the restaurant/bar during lunch hour.

Mouths watered as the pork cooked, its aroma filling up the venue, and again as the huge hunk of meat was sliced up. The trays emptied almost as quickly as they were filled but I finally managed to get my hands on a roll! The crackling was perfectly blistered and crispy. The flesh was succulent and moist.

Yesterday was the launch of Heartattack and Vine – an Italian food and wine bar on Lygo St, Carlton. I attended as a guest of Maggie from Gastronomical Ramblings , not a blogger this time. The owners of Wide Open Road and a Minor Place’s first restaurant venture. They found inspiration to open this restaurant venture when they visited Italy. Here are some photos from last night :) The post Heartattack and Vine appeared first on Peach Water | Melbourne Food Blog .

Heartattack and Vine - A modern take on the Venetian cicchetti bar.
Gastrology
Unlike their cafés, Heartattack and Vine will be an all day operation – from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week – and will offer a contemporary take on the Venetian cicchetti bar.

...when a modern eatery calling itself “Heartattack and Vine” opens opposite perhaps the most well-known of all the restaurants along Lygon St, Brunettis, it makes a statement. Heartattack and Vine – named after a Tom Waits song about wayward souls – opened late last year by Emily Bitto and Nathen Doyle (A Minor Place and Wide Open Road). While it may not be the traditional Italian food your Nonna makes, Heartattack and Vine still knows what it’s customers want, drawing on old-world Italian hospitality to create something modern. “We just want to replicate that really relaxed, simple, welcoming hospitality… although I can put on a very good accent.” says Doyle. Breakfast is Euro-style with Noisette pastries and Wide Open Road coffee. Lunch is equally pared-back, with a choice of rolls filled with either porchetta, prawns or a vegetarian option, with the option of a side or coleslaw and condiments.

Food that night was catered for by the Tommy Collins Group, with Michael Fox at the helm as head chef, who prepared some of the best catered food I had all year. The smoked chicken breast sandwich was a universal favourite, with smoked chicken breast that’s actually been pureed, dehydrated and made into a crisp, with more chicken sandwiched in-between. Honestly. An all protein chicken sandwich? Fitness buffs, take note!
