Delightful Sunday roast lunch at Green mans arms. Amazing tapas to start followed by a meat-free and gluten-free roast lunch. I couldn’t believe it was #vegan! Loved the Yorkshire pudding (traditional British style!) and vegan gravy on the lentil main. Amazing!
I tried this place for an early lunch on Saturday. There were a few people in the dining area but the front bar was fairly empty. They have a good selection of beers on tap and a good selection on the food menu. I went for the vegetarian bolognese (also available in a vegan option) and it was fantastic. The sauce was delicious and the pasta cooked perfectly al dente. There was a bit of a wait for the meal but I think it was due to the people in the dining area and the fact that the food is mostly cooked up per order. I recommended it to some friends the next day.
Any place that can make vegetarian food interesting gets my tick and we will definitely be back (mindful that interesting doesn’t always equal healthy... despite my thinking that if it’s vegetarian I can eat as much as I want!) It was super crowded even on a Thursday night and definitely make a booking. Good atmosphere in the restaurant but it could a bit loud.
I loved all the dishes we tried. The Falafels were this note
Ordered the vegan feed me menu. Highlight was the dessert and the main. The gnocchi was amazing and the Mandarin sorbet and chocolate cake was out of this world. Will go back just for dessert
As a vegan - I usually don’t give 5 stars as it must be exceptional - but holy shitttt. This is the best restaurant I’ve been to in a very long time. 10/10 for food, 12/10 for service and all around blew me away. Try the chickpea pancake !!
I ordered the ramen and it was the best ramen I have had in this country maybe
The onion broth was so delicious it really didn’t need the chilli oil best vegan meal I have ever had definitely going back
Absolutely incredible food and cocktails. Both food and drink menu are anything from boring, and everything is executed beautifully and the flavours are balanced. I had the ramen. The broth happened to be vegan and it's the first time I've had a vegan broth that was full of depth and not inferior to a meat one. The watermelon chilli margarita was the most complex, balanced and delicious cocktail I've ever had, and the service was quick and friendly.
Well deserved 5 stars. We will be back.
We have been to the Green Man’s Arms in Carlton a number of times and every time, the vegetarian menu is always different, seasonal and so reasonably priced.
They have two sittings on Friday and Saturday nights, 6pm and 8.15pm onward and bookings are recommended.
In the past, we have had their Feed Me menu at $38 per person which we have found both interesting and good value though the whole table needs to have the Feed Me menu. This time though we ordered a la carte.
We were a group of 4 with only two waitresses on the floor. They effortlessly served us and answered our many questions with ease and recommended a number of options.
We shared Cucumbers and Goat Curd which has a generous serve of cucumbers with flaked almonds, mint, tahini & pickled zucchini.
The Stracciatella was a combination of seasonal peaches, radicchio agro dolce that had a taste of both sweet and bitter
We thoroughly enjoyed the Grilled Cabbage that was accompanied by pickled currants, tarragon, pine nut and tahini
The pearl barley, freekeh, brown rice, nuts, seeds, pomegranate salad with sherry vinegar was bountiful and extremely filling.
Our last main was the Eggplant Schnitzel that was crumbed with panko , dressed with potato aioli and a side salad of cabbage slaw.
There is a reasonably priced wine menu and we shared a Dominique Portet 2017 Rose from the Yarra Valley. There is also a wide selection of craft beers and wines by the glass.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would highly recommend visiting the Green Man’s Arms and suggest you dine on their Feed Me menu at $38 per person and enjoy the different offerings of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free meals.
We will be back.
Pleasantly surprised with the food from this vegetarian restaurant, Green Man’s Arms. I had the jack fruit sliders (it’s a mini burger so order 2 servings if you are hungry), sautéed greens (a squeeze of lemon/lime would have lifted the flavor another notch) & eggplant schnitzel (took a while for it to come out & a bit too oily for me). All dishes were delicious so I’d definitely come back for the food & service. Not cheap though, slightly on the expensive side.
The dedicated omnivore that I am, I had been eyeing Green Man’s Arms – a newish Israeli-influenced vegetarian pub in Carlton – with interest over the past year, but refrained from visiting for two reasons: a) the initial reports hadn’t been complimentary and b) vegetarian food is tricky when numerous popular vegetables are out of limits to me. To refresh everyone’s memory, high-histamine vegetables include eggplant, mushrooms, tomato (the biggest loss by far) and spinach (surprisingly pervasive).
So excited to have found a place with such an amazing diverse vegetarian menu. Everything was absolutely delicious. Who knew you can make few simple ingredients so flavourful.
We tried the falafels, the jackfruit , the baked carrot and the stracciatella. I’d recommend all of them and would definitely go back to try the rest of the menu.
Also, the service was wonderful as well. The staff were very friendly and quick.
I would put Green Man’s Arms on my list of top vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Melbourne.
I had the eggplant schnitzel with vegan mayonnaise. It was a crispy and you can taste the eggplant. I was sad to see the soba noodle dish have been taken off the menu. I hope they bring that back soon.
The menu is short and concise but good selection offered.
Would highly recommend for both meat and non meat eaters.
Summary: 4.2. Very good restaurant. Superior veggie menu. Good drink options. Nice space. Great service. Good pricing.
Review: Friends took us here. We were glad they did. It’s a good operation. Great vegetarian food which is composed and presented with confident but understated class and style. The feed me menu is good. Quantity and quality is just right. Great selection of dips, salads and roasted vegetables. All dishes good. Lovely hummus. Good pita. Terrific crusty bread. Very nicely cooked roasted carrots and pumpkin. Thoughtfully served and good robust flavours. Nice dessert as well. The eating area is small but well laid out. Notably, they really know how to serve a table of four. There’s plenty of food and it’s cleverly and classily served so there’s plenty for everyone. You’re neither rushed nor waiting too long for the next dish. The rose we chose went well with the food. Very impressive service throughout. Calm, pleasant and professional. Top class. Cost was very reasonable for the quality and quantity. This is a well run and enjoyable restaurant. Recommended.
Came here for Sunday dinner and had a wonderful night. The ambience is warm and cozy and has that lovely Pub feel. The menu was a great selection of traditional Pub Food with a twist on ingredients. I had the eggplant Parma which was wonderful, filling, different. My friends had the burger and the leek tart, both gave rave reviews from it. Will come back and try some food the other meals, it’s a great alternative from the fancy, more expensive vegan/vegetarian restaurants around- this is simply warm hearty food with no extra frills.
Nice place, lots of tap beer, other drinks and food options.
Food needs little portion increase (may cost them a dollar more, but image will increase 10 times), good taste and innovative food though.
Management should strive to excel, waiting queue suggests its time ripe enough to think about opening a branch in other burb, without being stingy in portion.
I was so excited to hear that a new vegetarian pub called the Green Man's Arms was opening in Carlton and that it had kombucha on tap. I mean hyperventilating excited! Though I know Carlton well, the former pub Percy's at the corner of Lygon and Elgin Streets was not one I was familiar with. But now I have been to the Green Man's Arms a few times I would love to be a regular there.
We came here on a Saturday night with a booking and it was 👌👌👌
We have a 2yr old and the place was wonderful and totally family friendly (I did ask for a high chair in my booking)
My thoughts:
Food - AMAZING! We got 2 dishes compliments of the lovely chef. An entree of Squash & Tahini with date molasses and a vegan coconut & rhubarb pudding. We also had the Pierogi and Pommes Frittes. Probably too much food but worth the food coma 🙃
Ambience - there’s a bar area and a dining area and both are wonderfully cosy.
Service - the food came out super fast! Our waitress was lovely and even enquired if our little boy was comfortable.
Can’t wait to go back soon :)
Came here after a movie. Everything was delicious. So many good options and flavours. The staff and chefs were brilliant. The kambucha was the best i've ever hard. Can't wait to return!
The interior of Green Man's Arms has been put together with considerable style and care, a great combination of palate and objects. Drinks list is well planed and reasonable. The food was sensational! each dish beautifully presented and the flavours married perfectly. Truly a new hot spot for Carlton.
I love this place and the fact it’s an all veg menu. The food is delicious and the ambience within the venue is amazing. Can’t wait to return!
What an amazing little pub this is. I think I’ve walked or driven passed this place a million times but have never visited. It’s recently been transformed into Green Mans Arms which is a pub with an all vegetarian menu. Vegan options available as well. Don’t let this put you off, this place has amazing food. All the dishes we tried were filling and flavourful and you didn’t miss the Parma or the steak at all, I promise!
We had the tasting board which came with fluffy pita, mixed dips, falafels and pickles. The smoked eggplant as a starter was also amazingly rich and smokey and delicious. We then tried three mains being the chickpea pancake, the potato dumplings (basically large gnocchi) and the Mac and cheese. All were good servings and packed with flavour. We kept looking at the tables around us and everyone was just devouring their food.
An absolute MUST I say!
Small pub with front bar area and regular dining out the back. There are plenty of things on tap, no happy hour but overall decent prices. Good cocktails.
Great vegetarian menu. Smokey eggplant was delicious. Falafel comes with great dips. Polenta was creamy and tasty.
The Green Man’s Arms is a pub serving vegetarian Israeli food in Carlton. It’s not everyday you find a pub with a focus on vegetarian whole foods, sustainability and making whatever they can in-house. They also match the meals with their selection of beer or wine. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will love this place.
A laid back pub atmosphere with a bit more of a formal dining room. The food was very tasty, especially starters. The tapas style menu and freshness of food is nice and with a good beer list.
I really loved walking into a pub knowing that I wouldn’t just be forced to have the one vegetarian risotto they have on their menu but that I could enjoy anything on the menu that takes my fancy (and there was a lot on this menu I liked the look of, dinner was not a very easy choice)
The menu is fantastic for sharing, making it the perfect place for a date or group dinners. We had the falafel plate and the Mac and cheese and both agreed we loved the smokey baba ganoush and falafel combo. The bread it was served with was a little dry however but overall a winner for us. The Mac and cheese was tasty, maybe could have used a little more seasoning but overall satisfying.
The service was great and the location/space is really nicely done. I will definitely return for a meal again as the menu was filling and very very appealing.
Absolutely beautiful. Vegetarian fine dining without the price. The decor is spot on as well and the beer options are great. Pretty sure the green man's pate is the best thing I've eaten. Ever.
Came here with a large group and we really were excited to try the menu but sadly they had run out of a few of the menu items and even ran out of out watermelon which meant the watermelon daiquiri turned into a blueberry one :(
Drinks are reasonably priced. Group favourite was the purple cabbage and labneh salad which was delicious. Would come back and have another go at the menu.
good service, good food, good price. definitely worth a shot if you are vegan, vegetarian or in this area especially as there aren't many vegan options around lygon street.
Food was delicious. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable on which food items are vegan. Everything seemed fresh and tasty. Quick service, great beer (the house beer was fantastic).
I had the falafel plate, and shared the polenta bites and a mushroom filled pastry thing. Everything was fresh, simple and delicious. Something to note is that the menu on Zomato and the restaurant's website does not show the full menu - there were quite a few more items available.
Would have given a 5/5 except for two things: 1. Sort out the air con, it was hotter inside than outside; 2. Even though all the food was in bowls or plates, no need to serve them on huge wooden boards.
An all-vegetarian, Israeli-influenced pub located just down the way from Cinema Nova. The food is designed to share, so it’s best to go with a big group so you can try as many things as possible. We had the homemade hummus, which came with pita and pickled vegetables, the falafel (crispy on the outside, bright green on the inside), the potatoes (could have eaten a whole bowl myself) and two of the salads (the standout was the beetroot one, which came with a bagel!). We shared a couple of desserts too, and had drinks, and were pleasantly surprised how affordable it all was when the bill came. Will be back!
A Vegetarian delight.
Came on a Wednesday night and quite quickly got a table for 2. With heaps to choose from on the menu, we were spoilt for choice.
Went for the falafels - most amazing falafels ever.
Yemeni Lahuh Bread - opted for the fried eggplant, and the mushroom options - both were unique and flavourful.
Pomme Frittes - potatoes to share.
Watermelon Daiquiri was great :)
Loved the experience, I hope they're here to stay.
Oh hey new kid on the block!
Really solid menu, the watermelon daquiri was amaze and just what we needed!
Lovely potatoes, but bit unsure about the bread situation, got a bit soggy from the delicious sauce so made for some really leaky handheld devices! Still tasted good though, but might be fantastic if crispy instead 🤔✌️🌈
Green Man's arms is described as Carlton's newest vegetarian/vegan Israeli pub and boy did it impress beyond words. The talented head chef, straight from israel really puts his heart and soul (and homeland) into every dish. The lovely couple who own the pub fill the room with love, dedication and hard work and describe their new pub as "honest, authentic and cooked with love"- and our experience was just that (and more). Starting with kombucha aperol spritz, these drinks were just a taste of the niche but incredible delicacies to come. The Israeli food was simply to die for, every bite filled with flavour and love. The Yemeni Lahuh Bread (almost like a felafel taco) is a must order- soft and filled with flavour. The house made hummus comes out looking gorgeous and tasted creamy and delicious too. The accompanying pickled veggies were a great addition. The Labane purple salad was one of the prettiest salads we've ever seen and was flavoured to perfection, the accompanying jerusalem bagel is the perfect addition to ensure you soak up ever last speck. The house made coucous dish (yes, the couscous is even hand made) with roasted vegetables and creamy vegetable puree was definitelt one of our favourites- soft and light in textures, full bodied in flavour yet extremely filling. You know a place is killing it when even their shuk (market) salad is amazing!! To finish we had the halva ice cream and barboosa cake- we were shocked to discover that this dish was vegan given how creamy and light it was- an insane end to an incredible meal!! One of the amazing things about Green Man's are the prices are incredibly decent and the serving sizes are big... we find it's not often you walk out of a place feeling as if you weren't ripped off/your pockets aren't depleted. They are extremely accomodating to vegans too- with substitues to every dish. Finally, the pub like relaxed vibe is extremely welcoming and complements the style and auroa of Green Man's. We really can't wait to return for more.
A vegetarian pub.. now that’s pretty cool! 1/2 of #ToFeedTwo caught up with two girlfriends where one of them was vegetarian. What a great social outlet, providing a variety of drink options as well as many yummy food options.
We thought we would share a few dishes as we wanted to try more than one. We got the Falafel, Pomme Frites, Hummus (house made), Pommes Sinia and Labene Purple Salad. The food was delicious and was accompanied by a variety of flavours and dressings which matched so well to each dish. The highlights for us were the Labene Purple Salad and the Pommes Sinia however we still rated all dishes just as highly as each other!
We live across the road and have been in 4 times in the last week. Food is yummy! Falafels, hummus, tabbouleh, pommes frites, all tasty af. Tap list is good, they do cocktails and the reno is gorgeous. Just a really nice place. Most of the staff are really friendly too.
Update April 2020:
Happy to say that GMA have become one of my favourite places in the inner north. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend almost all of the dishes on the menu and it’s also a great place for a drink.
Food 4.5/5, Service: 4/5, Ambience 4/5, Price: 3.5/5
Original Review 2017:
Food: 2/5, Service: 2/5, Price: 2/5, Ambience: 2/5
I really wanted to like this place (and hope to eventually) but was ultimately let down poor service, the ambience and limited vegan options.
The single vegan main (a couscous with a few pieces of roasted veg) was ordinary and not something I’d order again. In a group with multiple vegans, ordering several of these didn’t seem like a good option (we were right) so we opted for a bunch of the entrees and sides. The pomme frittes were great, the felafel and hummus were both fine but not as good as you can get at other felafel places around (Just Falafs, Very Good Felafel, Miznon), and the gazpacho should be reviewed by someone that likes gazpacho (which, it turns out, is not us).
It may not be the case everywhere in the restaurant but where we were sitting in the back section near the kitchen, it was very loud and we found it difficult to hear each other across our tables (we were in a group of seven).
We also had long wait times for some food and drinks. Our first drink order and entree/main order was fine but as the night went on, we waited 20 mins and had to ask again before a drink order came through. Dessert took longer, which was long enough that we decided to cancel and get dessert elsewhere.
The service issues and wait times could be explained by it being their first week but with the current menu and prices, I can’t recommend this place to vegans but vegetarians might have a better time with respect to options. I’m really hoping this place can work out their issues and become another great veg place in the inner north. Will try again in a few months and update the review.
I've been to a lot of restaurants which are 100% Vegan and also to those who offer many Vegan Friendly options but Green Man's Arms will always come on top as the best Vegan food delivering Pub Bistro in entire Melbourne.
Trust me, you'll never go wrong here when it is about food. Staff is super friendly too.
Rating:
Taste - 4.5 out of 5
Portion - 5 out of 5
Presentation - 4 out of 5
Price - 3 out of 5 (5 being Extremely expensive and 1 being reasonably cheap)
Incredible food, warm decor coupled with professional and personable staff, what is not to love? Well I couldn't find anything.
This is a must visit establishment if you live in the area or are just visiting.
The team in the kitchen know their craft, with portion sizes perfect, stunning flavour and astute presentation.
We will be back. Keep up the amazing work!
Exceptional food for vegetarians and vegans. I especially love the Kombucha on tap. Servers extremely cool and friendly. I got there early as I am in a manual wheelchair and I was accommodated very well. I had a very lovely evening and finished it off with an almond baked cheesecake which was sensational. Thank you!
This is a good little pub with friendly staff and great menu. Tap/beer selection could be better, which is why I've gone four stars rather than five, as it was quite minimal when we went. But, still worth going. Also, there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options so highly recommend that! Had the vegan charcuterie platter which was delicious. Wish it had more vegan chorizo though! Would definitely go back.
I was blown away by how great the food is here. I'd highly recommend the pommes frites and definitely the eggplant schnitzel, but it all seems great. Really friendly service and everything was very covid safe. Lovely atmosphere, and a good selection of beers as well. I'll be back here I reckon!
Beautiful place for a vegan option. Great customer service very friendly. Fried Cauliflower pretty good. Also the eggplant schnitzel is a really good tasting main dish
Easy to book and managed to score airy seating on a hot evening.
An abundance of quirky beers to try in this modern pub.
Outstanding vegetarian food that’ll astonish even the most carnivorous beings - thoroughly enjoyed by all and will be back again.
Excellent spot for food and drinks. Menu is surprisingly excellent and caters for all dietary needs.
Drinks have a great range and the vibe in this pub is fun, and friendly. The perfect t spot for a group of friends to catch up.
Were very accommodating for my girlfriend birthday dinner and drinks, not fording us onto a banquet menu and were flexible with booking numbers.
