I am speechless at just how good the food is!!! It isn't just "good", its unbelievably, extraordinarily good. Possibly the best meats we've ever had especially this time round. The customer service is excellent, great value for money, free banana. What a treasure of a restaurant ❤️
The best of the best, I’ve been coming back here for years and all I have to say is each time I come here the taste is always to perfection, some of the most friendly and welcoming staff and the ambience never changes. It’s full of tradition, good vibes and flavoursome food. Hasn’t disappointed to date. Will be back.
The dish was of generous size for its prize, the lamb was nicely cooked, and it smelt great! The staffs are also so friendly and generous, we will definitely come back.

Only things better than the service is the food. Tried almost every menu item over a period of six months and yet to find a poor dish. Special mentions to the lamb nsk classic and all the entre items which are all amazing. Great Value too, serving sizes are huge for the price. My score 4.25 stars. This is a composite review of lunch from last December & my second visit (with J) on Tue 23rd April (with photos this time).
Small interior, but nicely decked out – nice flowers & utensil holders, good Q large paper napkins, water brought to our table 👍. We decided to share the NSK Combo again ($19), but got fish instead of lamb. This is a bargain IMO 👍...
It came with a Sambusa, 3 Bajeya, Flavoured rice, Braised veg, a Green salad* & a Dessert. We were both given a cup of Soup upon arrival & it was one of the best clear broths we have ever had 😋 - so flavoursome & with a little chilli kick on the tail (even spicier 2nd time).
The Beef Sambusa (think mini samosa - they didn’t have any fish ones 🙁) was quite nice.
The Bajeya (falafels) were nice, not overly spiced inside (really good 2nd visit 😋) - using the green dipping sauce lifted them with its piquancy.
The long grain rice was YUM & the veg (while not visually exciting) was surprisingly tasty as well. The coarsely chopped green salad was a nice textural addition too (this was mostly missing the 2nd time* 🤔).
The fish was really good – the sauce was super YUM 🤤 (just as good 2nd time!). After chatting with the nice guy who took our order, apparently it is the same sauce as used on the chicken (while all the red meat has a different sauce).
We finished off with the Mango Yoghurt dessert - very tasty. Soft yoghurt & contrasting texture from the coconut/nuts – make sure you dig down to spread the honey through each mouthful for maximum enjoyment (not as sweet 2nd time, which made me like it even more). Oh and there are free bananas if you want (we were too full to partake 😄)…
Overall the NSK combo would be heaps of food for just one person (some of the other patrons were taking their LO's home with them). We had a Grapefruit drink ($4) which was also more than enough for the two of us.
Staff were REALLY nice 👍 - you could hear them having a good time & enjoying the groovy background music (I love it when people enjoy their work 🙂).
A very pleasant “go to” lunch venue (it is quite different to Ethiopian food). Mmmmm 😋!

New Somali Kitchen is a Flemington restaurant we’ve wanted to visit for a little while, but never got around to until recently. We’re glad we finally did, because this introduction to Somalian food got us hungry for more.
Great vibe..Had the Work's Lunch which was brilliant, flavoursome and filling. and don't forget the mango yoghurt drink, I definitely recommend it..

Amazing African food which also caters to my friend looking for halal food. Good food with a slightly modern setting. We were first served with warm soup with free bananas and passion fruit drinks available on the table. I ordered the NSK with rice. Soft and tender meat. I will come back again to try others on the menu.

The Somali coffee is a bit interesting, I am not very into it, but everyone who went there with me last time like it a lot. It's a herbal tea, similar to chai tea but very different.

We came here on an early Wednesday night and had a range of dishes - overall the food is nice but the quality varies by dish quite a bit. The NSK classic with lamb was our favourite main dish. The lamb was super tender and had lovely flavours. The basta with beef was okay. The beef was again nicely flavoured but a bit chewy.
We tried all of the sides: The bajeya and the bur (it's a bit oily, but hey, we knew that since it's deep fried) we would have again but we would probably skip the sambusa.
The service is friendly and relaxed. The prices are reasonable.
First time trying African food. I really loved it. Their spices were really good. My partner ordered the classic dish and I ordered the wrap. My first bite, it blew my mind. It punched my face with flavour but it did get a little salty after a while
Delicious, fresh flavours. Staff are lovely and seem genuinely pleased to serve you. The complimentary banana is a nice touch too. Loved the falafel wrap!

Gave this place a go to see if there was a difference.
Comparing NSK to #somalieats: Price is still the same, less options at NSK. No beverage menus here other than a fridge of drinks.
Staff are lovely here but the waitress was a bit confused with our order, it felt like she wasn’t paying attention and so we had to repeat several times to make sure she got our order right.

A banana each was given as a traditional complimentary, no lamb soup here though compared to #somalieats.
We ordered NSK classics, changed one of the meats to fish which was very tasty, juicy and flavourful. The lamb you get here is a bigger portion of lamb, however the bones are included. I feel that #somalieats lamb was better in flavour, tenderness and although their portion of meat is smaller, there’s no bones to deal with.
Still great pricing and I love that they don’t charge you on what meat you prefer.
The spicy sauce is different than #somalieats. It has more of a fish sauce taste and a tad less spicier.
Take your lover, friends, family and even your African friend for some great Somali cuisines.
Great little spot. Loved the NSK classic, full of flavour. The pastry pockets were also delicious. Nice service and very reasonable prices. Will definitely eat here again!
NSK Combo is a favourite. Their menu selection is limited but everything is SO packed with flavours!! Love the mango/yoghurt dessert as well and how every meal comes with a banana (as per the Somalian custom). Very much recommended.

We were checking out the menu on the window when a friendly smiling waitress walked out to welcome us and gave us a takeaway menu - that's when we've made the best decision to eat in and try out this bright and cute cafe in the main strip of Flemington, which has developed into a wonderful melting pot of delicious eateries from many diverse cultures that made Melbourne such an amazing city to live in. The waitress sat us down and gave us water and a free banana to start as it's the main export product of Somali - the gentleman sitting next to us was having it with his pasta! Anyhoo, we've decided to go with the platter which gives us a taste of the tender, melt off the bones, beautifully marinated lamb, which was served on top of a bed of delicately spiced rice, an intense and tasty minced meat samosa as well as pillowy soft in the inside falafels, fresh crisp salads and an awesome dessert of toasted almonds, coconut flakes, mango puree and yoghurt. What was extra awesome was that you get a free refill of the rice, which was so delicious that I could probably just eat that by itself. We washed the yummy meal off with a spiced tea, which has ginger in it to help give us a warming feeling and food coma for the rest of the evening. I think we will definately be back and bring friends!
We bad the platter which gave us a full taste of Somali fare, and Somali coffee to go with. Every customer gets a free banana with their meal as a nod to general practice in Somalia. The interior design is very cute and the staff know how to have a good time. The kitchen was a suggestion by my Kenyan Uber driver and I was thankful for her handy hint with every bite of fragrant saffron rice 😍

Been here twice and ordered the regular size NSK Special both times, last visit had it with the Somali style Falafels and comes with 'bottomless' Somali rice, a salad and a yogurt sauce. At $13 excellent value and the falafels were beautiful but I just wanted more sauce so next time I'll ask for extra which won't be a problem and the owner and staff are very accomodating. This time I ordered the NSK with Lamb, very nice but for me too many bones and not enough meat though the taste was good. The rice was fragrant with hints of cardamom, cinnamon and cloves. I took the complementary banana home and ate it the next day. Staff here are very friendly and this establishment seems to be the only Somali Cafe/restaurant on the strip that is appealing to most and being embraced by the community at large, a very positive sign. A criticism I need to make is the space is small and sometimes some of the patrons stand around tables and the last thing I need is someone standing behind me whilst I'm trying to enjoy my dinner, after all it is a restaurant!!
We've been to this amazing eatery a few times and I cannot recommend it enough. Honest, full-flavoured dishes, neat decor and the most welcoming host you could imagine. Fellow diners are so friendly, inclusive and their excitement about this delicious traditional fare is infectious!

I'm so warmly welcomed here that it feels like coming home. This is one of my favourite places in Melbourne.
The wraps are particularly tasty and satisfying. I was offered a complementary banana with my meal to 'take the experience to the next level'. It was a pleasure to be offered a banana with my food and experience another cultural tradition.
The owner is a handsome, gracious gentleman. I can imagine this restaurant to be the perfect place for a romantic evening date. Not sure about the seating arrangements, but the mood is definitely in place.

Was looking for a quick bite to eat and discovered this hidden gem! Had never tried Somali cuisine and was thoroughly satisfied. Chose the wrap and the lamb was juicy, flavoursome and plentiful. Would definitely recommend for a great value, delicious meal. Complimentary bananas were great too!
Popped in today for a casual lunch after being attracted my the lovely bunches of flowers on the tables out the front.
Immediately felt welcomed and comfortable in the small but homely establishment.
We were given water and bananas, apparently traditional Somali practice, which was a lovely little touch.
Ordered the lamb combo meal to share and some sides, which he nicely told us was in the combo rather than just neglecting to mention and making more money. A nearby table ordered the goat so we added that too.
The goat was beautifully tender with subtle flavours, but the standout to me was the lamb... Just the right amount of spice without overdoing it, cooked perfectly and so tasty. The rice was also lovely. The pastry and mince side was fantastic, crumbed one a bit too spicy for me but the other half really enjoyed it.
Overall a really lovely little joint with great food and reasonable prices for generous portions. We will go back for sure.
Was walking around Kensington for a new place to eat when we saw this. We had previously tried many African Restaurants from footscray to north Melbourne and were curious about somalian cuisine! The falafel was crispy and fluffy and the lamb was beautifully seasoned. Having the mango yoghurt is a must to finish off the hearty mains! Staff were friendly and helpful even close to closing time! Would definately come again for the basta!
NSK should not be missed! Both the NSK Classic and the NSK Combo are fantastic dishes, that are tasty, filling and delivered with exceptional service! The man who runs this place is amazingly friendly and professional and really goes the extra mile to make his customers feel comfortable. Since moving away from Flemington this us definitely one if the places I most miss as having as my local!
We live nearby and had noticed this place on Racecourse Road, so my wife and I decided to give it a try. Love the fit-out. Friendly attentive staff, and the complimentary banana and flowers on the table were a nice touch. I had the NSK Combo, and my wife had the NSK Classic. Rice was fragrant and delicious. The lamb melted in our mouths. The yogurt and affagato were a lovely way to finish off a perfect dinner. We will be back!
From the outside, it looked inviting, very clean & female friendly (not as male dominated) so myself and a Finnish friend went in there with the intention to just get a coffee but once we saw the menu, our eyes popped out, we had to order a main, desert & coffee, it was way too good to skip. We got the NSK sample dish with goat. It turned out to be enough for 2 people (small stomachs) & it was tender and DELICIOUS. We also ordered a pot of Somalian coffee - strong with spices. We would go back there definitely to taste everything on the menu. There is a wash basin to wash your hands prior to eating if you wish to eat with your hands. Yes, that is permitted. Wonderful service, great atmosphere and spectacular service! After a much anticipated visit to NSK, I was pleased by every aspect of the cosy, but vibrant restaurant. On a busy, drizzly Flemington night, we were seated within 5 minutes and the waiter apologised refusely for the wait. The wooden decor, and subtle 90s hip hop added a homely vibe to the venue. We quickly ordered to combo platters, and I sheepishly requested mine with goat substituted, the paleo broccoli and quinoa rice to try, and was surprised when my request to substitute my dessert option was accomodated. Food was delivered very soon after, and was cooked to perfection. The lamb was tender and flavoursome - the real winner of the night, and if I had to pick one food to eat for the rest of my life it'd be that rice! The sides were incredible, especially the Somali-style falafel which was soft and doughy. Some of the friendliest service I have ever experienced in my life. Can I go back there every night?
Had been meaning to try this place ever since it popped up around the corner - have eaten in twice and had takeaway once, and everything has been simply flawless. The goat is my meat of choice, the saffron rice perfectly spiced, and the samosas are the best I have ever eaten. $18 for entree, main and dessert can't be beaten.
To top it off, the service is always friendly and prompt. One of Melbourne's true hidden gems.

Wonderful dining experience at New Somali Kitchen when I dropped by on Sunday for a lazy lunch. There were only 2 staff present, a chef, and a waitress, but service was prompt and effective. They even gave each diner a banana along the usual glasses and bottle of water. Had the goat & fish combination in the worker's lunch, while my dining companion had the NSK combo. Both were very delicious, well-spiced and tender. We also ordered more sambusas on the side, and they were fantastic. NSK is a sleeper, seems like not many apart from the Somalian crowd know of the place, so be sure to give NSK a go before they get popular and crowded.
Great food. Reasonable price. Simple. Ordered NSK Combo as it came with quite a number of dishes - starters ( sambosa amd falafel), saffron rice, succulent grilled lamb, little bit of salad on the side, greek yoghurt and mango with crushed nuts and coconut shredded sprinkles (just nice to finish your meal) and a banana too.
Had quite a pleasant experience here for lunch, the menu's simple but varied enough.
The Lamb & Fish in the NSK Signature Dish are cooked with a very tasty marinade, the fish option would be my recommendation.
To my surprise, the kofta-like Meat Balls were the sleeper hit, I could easily engorge on a plate of these.

We had a marvellous experience and really enjoyed the flavours and range of the food. Such generous portions and a sweet waitress who memorized all our orders perfectly without having to write them down. Loved the meat and fish dish and the fragrant rice. Mango dessert was sweet and salty . Delicious all of it. One of our highlights of our stay in Melbourne. Will certainly recommend it to any of our English friends visiting Melbourne. Good value. A little bit different. And I loved getting a banana before the meal! Really pleased me.
The Bur was simply delicious and was apparent it’s been freshly made to order. A perfect example of simple things done really well. This was a cross between a crepe, roti, and cornbread. It was thin like a crepe, crispy like a fresh roti, and full of corn flavours. This combination made for a cornbread that had flavours and textures to die for.
Another outstanding cheap eat. Brilliant, similar to Indian biryani style rice with meat. I had the combo which includes meat, rice, a desert of yoghurt and mango and a banana. The lamb was slow cooked and flavoured with African spices and was tender, juicy and busting with flavour. The serve of meat could be bigger but I guess with the cooking time they can't be handing out masses of it in a combo for $18. The accompanying rice and salad while nothing out of this world, went well with the meat and combined to make a substantial meal. The yoghurt desert was a bit tangy and could of used more sugar, but was nice none the less. $18 for the combo was extremely good value. The Somali coffee was awesome to finish off with and was loaded with cardamon and ginger which catches the throat on the way down, nice on a cold day. Would highly recommend to check it out for a cheap, harty and tasty meal Somali style!
We came to Flemington for our usual Asian fare when we bump into this little joint. And what a find!!! We've walked past this a couple of times and the food always looked fresh and hearty so we decided to give it a try. We ordered the Workers Lunch which is a big dish for two with lamb and chicken and the meal was superb. The meat was nicely marinated and cooked to perfection. The rice with saffron and raisin was so delicious my little one couldn't stop eating it! We followed that up (as we were hungry) with the goat NSK rice and kapow!!! The goat was the absolute highlight of the meal!!! The flavour was rich and the meat tender and I want more! Thankfully rice is on the house and you can get more if you wish. The little one washed it down with the complimentary banana which made this the perfect meal for us this lunch time. Keep it up NSK as this is a 5 star from us!

This place is one of the highlights of flemington. Its got a great interior, good music playing and some really nice guys that are going to dish you up some next level food.
The wrap that's on the menu is full of expert matched flavors and is cheap for both it size and nutritional value, so think about checking this place out next time you need a quick healthy lunch. it also comes with a hot sauce that blew my mind, so chilli heads youve got to go check this place out if only to try that sauce they're making.
think I'll end up trying everything on the menu here over the next couple months, truely an awesome place

New Somali Kitchen was cheap, tasty and authentic. You can eat like a king for under 30 dollars. Mango yogurt dessert was a highlight as was the NSK curry. The fish samosa was also amazing.

SIMPLE BUT AUTHENTIC SOMALI EXPERIENCE IN MODERN SETTINGS. The New Somali Kitchen is a small but very cute and comfortable cafe in the heart of Flemington serving authentic Somali food in a modern setting. Very different from other African restaurants in the Flemo strip!
The food and dishes on offer are simple, but full of flavour, and home-style sort of cooking, The use of strong spices like clove and cardamon gives some of their dishes a very distinctive strong flavour that I really like.
The Sambusa (a sort of samosa) and the Bajeya (a variety of Somali falafel) were great, crunchy outside, not oily or soggy at all, full with filling, and packed with flavour. They have a very distinctive flavour, very different from your usual Samosa or Falafel, way better to me!
The rice dish with beef on the bone looked rustic and unappealing but I truly loved the flavour of the rice and of the meat on the bone. This mades a very earthy dish. No fuss, no posh, but flavoursome food.
The mango and yogurt desert cup with toasted almonds and grated coconut is absolutely delicious despite its simplicity.
They don't have normal coffee, after all this is an authentic Somali, but Somali-style 'coffee' and tea, which are sort of spiced brews. They are a bit of a slap on the face the first time you try them, but then very nice if you forget that this is more a coffee-based hot drink than proper coffee. They are very spicy, so they might not be everybody's cup of tea.
I would love NSK to expand their menu and offer a few other Somali traditional dishes.
Service is courteous and welcoming but a bit matter of fac, as the team is very small and they are multitasking..
You go to the NSK not just to eat, but for the whole experience,. These days most International food restaurants pretend to be so-&-so nationality but then you visit and they are not authentic at all, some of them morph to adjust to the Australian taste and loose their originality right there. Others pretend to be so&So nationality, but they really are not. Others have names with so&So nationality attached to some dishes as a part of a marketing tool to appeal to the traveller and foodie in you. Well, NSK is honest and authentic in what they are, in what they serve and they do not pretend to be anything that they aren't. Bravo.

All staff took care of us and invited us into their culture.

Great food and great atmosphere. My partner had the Basta which nice but not a good as the NSK combo. The NSK combo is perfect if your not quite sure what you want eat but you want to give NSK try.
The Racecourse Road shopping strip that splits the suburbs of Flemington and Kensington is one rather fascinating neighbourhood, particularly if you’re chasing quality cheap eats. Some of the more notable operators in the area include Laksa King, I Love Dumplings & African restaurant The Abyssinian that serves up Ethiopian & Eritrean dishes from the Horn of Africa.
I live on the other side of the city but this is worth traveling for. Had the warm lamb salad. It's really big, the lamb is amazingly tender and tasty, and all of the flavours work so well together. It's light and fresh but filling enough to be a decent meal. Loved it!!
NSK Combo was a favourite. Their menu selection was limited but everything was SO packed full of flavours! The side Sambusa was nicely crispy and loved the mango/yoghurt dessert as well as the banana that came with every meal (which was a Somalian custom). A must visit when in Flemington.
If you are a fan of Mandi you must try NSK! Their food is amazing but the most disappointing part is that every time we go there either food is finished or the place is closed! Strongly recommend you to call before going.
Such a hidden gem! Staff were extremely welcoming, bringing us a cup of broth when we arrived. The food was INCREDIBLE and affordable. We got the share plate of goat with rice and it was 10/10, fall off the bone. Lovely place and people, I would highly recommend it!

It was an absolute honour to have Abdul cooked his traditional dish for us. It was a warm and welcoming greeting followed by the most delicious meal we've had in awhile. The mixture of exotic herbs and spices, super tender goat falling from the bone, traditional rice, THE BONE Broth (try eating the meal then have a sip of the broth while chewing your food). I was so impressed I had to give him a hug when we left and also ordered more to take back to our hotel for dinner.
A must visit in North Melbourne. The host, the food the culture and extremely affordable.

I had the regular size NSK classic with fish, and complementary lamb broth. So tasty and wish I came here earlier (after living in Flemington for two years 😅). Food arrived quickly and was very filling.
First time trying Somali food and it was delicious. They serve complimentary soup and bananas. The staff was very nice and polite and did a good job. The place is small but cosy and with clean and nice ambiance. Overall, a good first time experience 🌟

Walking in you receive a warm welcome. The services was amazing and the food amazing.
Loved the hot lamb broth and the shared mains was delicious with meat falling of the bone. Banana served with main which was a very Somali touch.
