Food: corn ribs were amazing. Pulled lamb shoulder extremely tender and full of flavour. Cherry cola sauce đđ»
Service: staff were knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. Food came out fairly fast.
Price: bit on the pricier side for the serving size.
Ambience: high ceilings and window out to the street provided nice views of the CBD.
Nice venue for work functions. The food was delicious, and the express menu was not too bad for the price paid (sandwich + side + drink), but the quantity was a bit small. Overall a nice experience, will consider revisit.

Insane pork ribs, great brisket and amazing entrees. It's no surprise that their pork ribs are so popular because they are really good and somehow different to the typical american ribs. It's a little dryer (not in a bad way), has less graze but the white sauce on top really made it unique and brought out the best of the ribs.
We came here last night before going to rhe âGood Heavens rooftop barâ upstairs from here. The staff were very friendly and very attentive. We were able to be served quickly and the food did not take long at all to come even though it was very busy. The bbq fries were very tasty and my partner liked the cornbread with sweet jalapeño sauce but I didnât like it as much as i prefer my cornbread a bit sweeter and a different flavour. The chicken wings were yummy too! Great view with the wall to wall window as well.
Impressed by the bold flavours!
Mac and cheese!! The number 1 dish on the menu for me, it was sensational. Fancy Hanks does a number of delicious sides which we opted for over some larger mains. The setting is also very cool.
Second time I've been to Fancy Hanks, and again it did not disappoint! We had the brisket, the lamb ribs, BBQ chips, and pickled beans. All were perfect on their own and together. I can't wait to come back and try the lunch menu!

Came here on a Sunday night, we booked in advance online and were greeted by friendly staff.
They were very accommodating and took some time to run through the menu with us.
We shared two small entrees, two mains and a side amongst three hungry people.
Everything was flavourful, not over powering and cooked very well.
Our favourite was probably the pork chops, which was a melt in your mouth experience. The drinks were also good as well. Great place to catch up with friends or have a family dinner.
4.5
Very happy with the feast we had here! Started with the pork croquettes, turmeric fried cauliflower and devilled egg - all 3 were close to sensational. For mains we had 500 grams of ribs which was a far bigger portion than expected - lots of meat and not so much bone! The ribs werenât melt in your mouth, fall off the bone style - but they were full of smokey taste and flavour. I told the waiter they werenât as expected and he explained that this is due to the smoking process - sounds legit! Along side the ribs we had the biscuit with maple butter, the Mac n cheese and the green bean salad. Honestly, it was a top notch meal. Kudos as well to our waiter (didnât get his name), but he was knowledgeable and helpful - a credit to the business!
We love a good bbq joint! Fancy Hankâs is great place tp catch up with friends and family!
We loved the venue and also the delicious food they offer.
Particularly amazed by their Sweet & Sour BBQ Wings with yoghurt ranch and also their Cornbread with sweet jalapeno spread and pickled jalapenos - flavours are amazing!!!
Apart from those, we also had their 14-hour smoked Rangers Valley brisket with coffee molasses, red onion pickles, Mac n cheese with provolone, thyme crumbs, BBQ fries with tamarind mayonnaise.
I think the brisket was a bit too strong in flavour for me though, we couldnât finish the whole serve!
Two must haves on this menu - the devilled eggs and the brisket!! The brisket is melt in your mouth delicious with a smoky dish flavour. Mac n cheese is good too. Ordered the set menu and you wonât go hungry! You get a mountain of food including sides of potato, beans, coleslaw and cornbread. Suggest if you are not hungry then to order separately. Great vibe and friendly service.
We stopped this evening for a sneaky pre show dinner and were not disappointed!
We didn't have a booking but managed to get a seat at the bar (actually our favourite!). Staff were welcoming and explained the menu really well. There were so many delicious looking sides and starters so we ordered a few of those! 5 was a decent amount of food! Highlights were the brisket ends with beetroot (great flavours and textures!), the Mac and cheese and the cumin fried cauliflower. Collard greens were awesome but ultra spicy-a different type of heat than other items we tried and a little off the vibe of the food.
Overall, great experience, left really full and enjoyed our dinner. Will defs come again and are coming to try their Sunday roast! Thanks guys
Mouthwatering meat! We had a large group and were able to try a lot on the menu. I'd highly recommend the brisket, ribs and do not forget to order that corn bread!!! Simply amazing. Excellent drinks menu to suit the cocktail, wine and craft beer drinkers. Cool vibe and service was efficient and vibrant. Thanks for great night and keep up the good food.
Relaxed date night pick for my husband and I. We ordered devilled eggs, grilled octopus, cumin cauliflower, slaw, brisket, lamb ribs and BBQ fries and left feeling full - more so from the richness than volume of food. Servings were not stingy but also not bountiful.
Service was great - helpful but not intrusive. Nathan made some great suggestion, split our order into handy courses and offered to make a cocktail that wasnât on the menu. We realised after the fact that we hadnât been offered any hot sauces, but we also hadnât asked for them so canât really fault that.
Pretty dark restaurant, which was fine for us, and not too noisy. Could have a decent conversation.
Not in a hurry to go back but still a good meal out!
Solid bbq place to try with some mates. We ordered a meat tray with a bit of everything. Highlights were the sausages which were nice and smoky and full of flavour and the pulled pork which was juicy and tender. Brisket was dry unfortunately. Ribs had great flavour but personally donât prefer dry rubs.
Fancy Hanks has a solid menu, many delicious options. My friend and I shared the short rib, BBQ chipotle glaze wings and the fries.
I feel very torn about this review, the wings were just delicious with a nice sticky and tasty glaze. Although they were delicious, that didn't warrant the price tag on them. Also there were only 3 that were cut up, not worth the price in my eyes.  The chips were yummy too, I loved the seasoning and we got to try some of the in house chilli sauces. The short rib fell short for me and I didn't like the aïoli that came with it, a glaze or jus would of been a better option (in my opinion).
Service was great and a nice restaurant ambience. It is unlikely that I will return.
Outstanding food. I had the beef brisket, pulled pork and corn bread. Everything was brilliant with the brisket just falling apart.
Was a little difficult getting the staff attention but other than that it was a great experience
Came here tonight and it was hard to fault, solid 10/10 for me. Brisket is to die for , Mac and cheese is heaven , those collard greens that come with the chicken should be side, they are amazingggg.. enough from me now. Do yourself a favour , check it out.
Been here a few times and it's always a winner. Great atmosphere and cocktails were awesome too. A bit of a wait for a table sometimes but there's a rooftop bar we could wait in so no big deal. Highly recommend the smoked chicken, easily the best thing on the menu.

Great drink selections for starters, not sure what this drink is called (some sort of G&T) but I was pleasantly surprised! Food was great, between my friend and I ,we shared the beef brisket, lamb ribs and a few sides. Amazing flavour and very tender meat. Great place for after work hangouts!
Thank goodness for the Pitmasterâs Selection. The menu had so much to choose from it was hard to nail it down to a few. The Pitmasterâs Selection had 3 different types of smoked meats: beef brisket, pulled pork shoulder and sausage link (either beef or pork), a choice of multiple sides ranging from baked beans, corn brea, fries and the option of choosing between freak milk rolls or biscuits and a choice between of potato salad or coleslaw. All that for $50pp.
Iâm happy to pay that much again because it was bloody spectacular! The meats were perfectly smoked to the point of being so tender. The sides were a perfect accompaniment.
The gentleman at the bar was exceptional. Really love this place. Donât know why I didnât try it sooner!
For a table of four, we ordered the beef brisket, pulled pork, 2 servings of the sausages (4 sausages in two different flavours), the bbq chips, coleslaw and fried cauliflowers. It was a perfect amount of food to share between us. I was surprised by how reasonable the price was! And thank you to the gentleman that served our table yesterday (Sat the 29th of Sep) with impeccable customer service :)
Pork Ribs Special, best ribs Iâve ever had! Amazing!
Nice place with a cool decoration. Nice bar with a very open and cool staff. Also a good place in Melbourne to find good beer.
One of the well known American BBQ joints in the Melbourne CBD. Located off the top end of Bourke Street is a small American BBQ joint. Be sure to book for a table as the restaurant has limited seats. We came in a large group and decided to order Ala Carte as we were able to have a greater range of dishes and meats compared to the $50 Feed Me Menu.Â
For our meats we ordered Brisket, Pulled Pork, Lamb Ribs and Pork ribs. All the meats were tender and tasty each with their own unique flavour. The highlight were the lamb rib, the cherry BBQ sauce perfectly accompanied the lamb.Â
For sides we had the Mac & Cheese, Potato salad, Buffalo Fried Cauliflower, BBQ Chips and Roast Beet Salad. All of the sides were delicious and balanced out the heavy meats.Â
Satisfied with the food and loved the atmosphere. Don't be afraid to order A la Carte as you are more likely to get a better variety than the feed me menu.
What a delight eating their smoked meats đ€€
beef brisket is my favourite. Mac and cheese and their pickles are also delicious.
Weâve been here many times and food is always great.
Fancy Hanks is that loveable bqq, slow cooked, smoked meat bonanza on Bourke street. Now think of all of that soul food goodness in a brunch menu. Yep, thatâs right folks, Fancy Hanks is doing bottomless brunch and theyâre doing it well. Every Sunday from 12pm-2pm you can have bottomless cocktails (Kentucky iced tea & pomelo spritz) and two brunch dishes of your choice for only $50. If youâre still hungry you can order extra dishes for $12.50 but if you team up with a friend and order two different menu items each and share, you can almost try the whole menu. So grab youâre friends for a Sunday sesh coz this is a goodie.
We enjoyed a lovely meal here tonight. Had tray of pork ribs, chicken wings, fries, cauliflower, coleslaw and that was enough for 4 people. As we had room in our dessert tummies we also ordered lemon meringue and choc top to share. Everything tasted great and service was excellent. Only tip would be to provide wet ones post meal.
After my first time at this restaurant, I knew this would be one of my favourites.
I have been to a couple of American Barbecue places, but this one definitely takes the cake. The Brisket from the Pitmaster's Selection 'From the smoker' with the accompanying sauces bursts with flavour and honestly one of the best things I have ever tasted has to be the cornbread from Fancy Hanks.Â
Every time I have eaten here, the service has been good and the food arrives quickly. Let's not forget to mention the beautiful and classic interior design which does make you feel very 'fancy'.
Absolutely awesome! I am not a big âmeatâ eater, but the way these meats were cooked and the flavours were superb! The sides were delish! Nice atmosphere on the rooftop bar for Tiki Tuesday. So glad I ate here. Would most definitely recommend and return. Reasonably priced also.
Delicious American style barbecue in an upmarket diner space. We were looking at some of the pay per head share menus and our lovely waitress offered a selection of chefâs favourites for 4 of us instead so we wouldnât end up with too much leftover food. We absolutely loved everything chosen for us and had each dish explained when she brought them out. All the meats were delicious and tender & side dishes cut through the piles of meat well. We still ended up with lots of food left but were able to have doggy bags so none went to waste. Visited just before the new menu started so eager to return to try it.
Came here for a few times and thought it was a little overpriced for the lunch o ordered. Quickly changed my mind after coming here on a Friday evening for dinner and ordering a variety of things off the menu...i'm converted.
Try the cornbread!
Very good smoked ribs, very good range of tap beers. Comfortable lightings environment, good place for a hangout especially after work on weekdays or before a night out.
Great flavours throughout the foods including the potato salad and corn bread. Our waiters service was lovely and kind
Great value for money and will definitely go back.
I had an enjoyable experience at fancy hanks tonight. Being my second time visiting, I definitely ordered the beef brisket. I would highly recommend this as it is quite possibly my fave ever beef and great value (in my opinion). We also ordered devil eggs (yummooo), sausages, coleslaw, potato salad, chips, mac n cheese, corn bread and the beef short ribs.
I would recommend getting some salads with the meal as it is obviously meaty, and they complement well.
This meal was shared between 4 people, was a decent portion and it came to approx 45$ pp.
Unfortunately, did not get the chance to try the pork ribs tonight as they had sold out. But will try next time as I will definitely be back :)
Love Fancy Hanks! My husband says they make the best smoky-melt-in-the-mouth beef brisket he's ever had...and he's had a lot of brisket :D
Their mac n cheese is also great.
Meat lover haven Fancy Hankâs has a new menu and boy is it a crowd pleaser. The reinvigorated menu of American-style slow-cooked barbecue is everything loyal followers have come to love and more.
An absolute must-have is the beef brisket with black pepper rub (using pasture-fed beef from Gippsland with a marble score 2+). Particularly noteworthy for its beefy flavours which have been enhanced by ample marinating before being smoked for hours. Simply stunning.
We enjoyed a nice evening at fancy hanks. We ordered the ribs which had plenty of meat but not quite enough sauce. Out of the sides the Mac and cheese was a clear standout, it was delicious! The service was friendly and helpful with our dietary requirements. We did however feel disappointed that they only had choc tops available for dessert.
Our waitress was very lovely and gave really great service by explaining the menu. In terms of the meat, the brisket was definitely the highlight. We also had the beef short ribs but it was too fatty for my liking as you could see fatty streaks in every bit of the meat. I normally donât eat chicken wings but these were huge! And tasty as there was a fair bit of meat on them.. more like turkey wings! lol we also had a couple sides, but the fries were the nicest.
We did find it strange that there were no lamb ribs at that we had the last short rib at 7pm..
Overall good experience
Co-Founder Kent Bell has been operating Fancy Hankâs since 2012, originally as a roaming pop-up around. We should ALWAYS deep fry our superfoods. Melbourne. After two years Mike Patrick, previously of San Telmo, joined the team, rolling out brisket and ribs to delighted carnivores across the city.
I haven't been here in a while but these guys do some great American style meats with some delish sides. Recommended if in the area for sure.
Its alright for lunch. (Lunch menu till 5pm).
Ordered the beef brisket sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich. 8/10 for the pork but only a 6/10 for the brisket. Was good, a little soggy from the coleslaw.
When entering the place stood at the bench waiting for somene to seat us. Then when finally seated (empty restraunt at the time) was promptly offered water and the menu. Couldnt find a staff member to pay after finishing meal. Had to ask someone (was 4pm on australia day)
Points for: beef short rib, ambience, location
Dine Time: weekend dinner
Quite a comfortable, open, spacious venue with high ceilings, still keeping the old architecture of the building.
Cornbread was outstanding. I could eat it on its own â a little bit sweet, fluffy and pairs really well with the jalepeno butter.
High quality meats have been used for the laborious smoking & bbq process.
The beef short rib was huge â nice dark crust, and juicy, super soft meat.
The beef brisket was quite similar â still juicy and you can just ease the strands of meat away with a spoon.
Half rack of pork ribs were quite good as well, but I feel you donât get enough meat for what you pay.
The sausage and pulled pork were tasty, but nothing outstanding.
The âvegetation optionâ was a sweet potato dish, which was killer â naturally sweet and creamy.
If youâre in a group, and after a decent feed, it can get expensive, especially if youâre having a drink. Ours came to around $60pp, which is definitely a once-in-a-while meal.
In terms of American BBQ quality, you have a few options around the CBD. You canât go wrong at Fancy Hanks, just choose your dishes wisely!
Fancy hanks is possibly the best American bbq restaurant in Melbourne. From the moment you walk into this place you are greeted with and intense sweet smoky aroma which instantly triggers your hunger sensors sending them into overdrive. The bbq here is so good and so tender. Each meat we tried had itâs own unique flavour. The brisket was cooked perfectly as was the chicken but the real standout were the pork ribs. Full of meat, and bursting with flavour. The corn bread, seasoned chips and the coleslaw salad were great sides and complimented the meats. The ambience is laid back and the service was very friendly. Eating at fancy hanks was not only a great meal but an experience. Canât wait to go back.
Located first floor of a typical art deco building in Collins street, Fancy Hanks is a culture clash that really works. Eating delicious burgers, expertly fried onions rings and drinking pints, sitting comfortably in the diner style booths while surrounded by the cornice work and windows typical of a 1960s piece of iconic architecture, with the bustling noise of Melbourne with the trams, office workers and tourists below, this place is truly a gem. My top pick would be
Good food but way way way overpriced. $9 for 1 slice of cornbread. $14 for a ramekin of Mac N Cheese. $70 for 1 rack of ribs. Try big boys bbq for same taste and better value for money.
I came here for a bucks and it was marvellous. The place was beaming and the layout was a sight to behold.
American BBQ - just authentic delicious food. Great sausages and a range of meat. Don't come here looking for a vegan/vegetarian meal, you will look silly.
The sides - baked beans, coleslaw blended extremely well with the meat dishes. Food came out nice and hot. The only flaw was the pork was quite dry, however other alternative of meat over ride the flaw.
The only one place where I couldnt consume beers because I was to full, highlighting how brilliant and tasty the meat (beef) were.
Beers were quite expensive, but I'd guess it, so no surprises. The atmosphere was great, esp. on the rooftop bar after we finish our dinner. 100% legit friendly folks. It generated a relaxing and soothing atmosphere and by observing the scenery from the rooftop, it was beauty in disguise.
Defs a go to place in the summer.
Recommended, pleasure of a first experience. Will be coming back here for a proper feed.
I first dined in this restaurant back when Fancy Hankâs still occupied the top level of the Mercat pub at Vic Market. The Bourke St venue is wonderful and spacious. Price has gone up since then though. Do try the side dishes. Coleslaw and corn bread are excellent. BBQ brisket is tasty but a tad dry. Pulled pork is delicious. There is an extensive beer list on offer but i recommend to check the prices before ordering because it can easily drain your wallet. Overall the food is still good but itâs no longer as affordable as it used to be.
Super delicious ! Both the brisket and pulled pork were outstanding, and the corn bread was a quality side. The atmosphere is great and the wait staff are very attentive. Highly recommend !
Didn't expect too much from the place since the reviews here suggest an average BBQ place. The place didn't disappoint but I can't rave about it either. The food items I enjoyed the most was from the Snacks and Sides list; pork belly and fried cauliflower. The beef brisket, however popular the staff claim it to be was not great. The sausages were, though. Don't bother getting the ribs because they were dry.
Overall, it was pretty good and the service was top. I also understand why the pictures posted by other reviewers didn't look too appetizing, it was definitely difficult and the lighting in the place didn't help either. But despite my whiney about the dry ribs and beef brisket, I would recommend this place.
Best mac and cheese I've had in a long time! The beef brisket was the stand out in terms of smoked meat. Ordered coleslaw as a side which was quite watery, still had good flavour. Very satisfied when the meal was done.
Food was okay....... watching barbecue shows on food channel i was expecting my taste bugs to go crazy. Slow cooked marinated meat on charcoal but i didnt reach any climax.
Dropped by last night for a late supper and ideally quick snack.
Was greeted at the door by a charming hirsute host whom was just perfect in his role.
He briskly seated me at the bar and handed me over to one of the bar staff.
Menu, chat & service a gogo.
I ordered a Leffe, the carrots and brisket.
Beer amazing but steep at $16
Brisket good but not memorable
Carrot were bloody fantastic! Would return for these day after day. The blend of brine with the mussels was perfect acidity which married with the richness of the brisket
I left thinking that $54 was a little more than I wanted to spend on a quick eat but I would pay it happily again for the top notch service I received from the bar staff & the host.
Thank you for showing how it's done! Awesome job
I basically went to Fancy Hank's because it's on my mac n' cheese hit list. The mac n' cheese was good (though our serving wasn't very warm), but the stand-out for me was their lamb ribs entree special (with some kind of chunky capsicum-cashew sauce not unlike pesto). Would also recommend the potato salad and fries. We also had the beef brisket which came with coffee molasses - interesting but not unpleasant!
Fairly solid food and service, pork ribs and pork belly starters were highlights, and salads were crisp and well balanced from a savoury and acidity perspective. Value/price a little stretched, and limited dessert menu. Would still return though.
Ideal for a group of friends. We got the banquet $50 per person. The meat was so tender. The cornbread was a hit. The cos salad was so crunchy and delicious. The service was outstanding. All the waitresses were very attentive and entertaining.
Needed a quick eat before heading to Her Majesty's Theatre for Aladdin the musical. As always I was running late and needed somewhere that could pump out some food. Ordered the Chicken, sausage links and corn bread and they certainly pumped out some tasty food. Can't wait to come back.
Mac and Cheese is the bomb!! Ordered the brisket lunch option which was really delicious. My partner ordered the chicken sandwich, which was mediocre, bland and the roll tasted a bit stale, but the brisket was so good it made up for it! Was a bit disappointed to have a 10% surcharge as it was a Sunday.. haven't been to many places that do that these day. Would return but would try not to good on a Sunday
I love a good meat restaurant (meat maiden for example). I have had F.H lined up for a while so with thrilled when I got an invite. Brilliant food. Everyone loved the mac & cheese and everyone felt pretty happy with the servings. Friendly staff that knew their menu. I didn't have to pay so happily can't comment about value for money but I don't think I would have minded regardless.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
+3.5
Lizzie's first impression: This place is conveniently opened in the hearts of the cbd, but I would recommend booking in advance especially on a Friday or Sat night.
Lizzie enjoyed: The stand out dish were the side mac n cheese and fries! The meats came out really quickly and were smoked really well, especially the pulled pork and beef brisket. The pickled onions given on the side were also a good idea.
Lizzie didn't enjoy: Although the ribs were very tasty, they were cooked a little more on the dry side. The sauce that was given for the beef brisket was a little odd.
LIZZIERATES: A great place for big groups to share the meats, but given that the place is known for smoked meats, I'd expect them to be spot on.
Went their for a birthday dinner, one of the best dinner's we have ever had. Different options to choose from regarding meat and sides. We didn't choose the feed me option this time, but next time we'd love to try it. The sides match the mains in regards to deliciousness. Can't wait till we come back.
Best comfort food for cold winter!
Extremely friendly staffs, who makes you feel welcome the second you enter the restaurant.
Macaroni and cheese is a must order. One of a kind. Macaroni with salty dehydrated olive and mushroom topped with crushed Cheezal.
As others have mentioned, service was great. And very accommodating, since I was dining alone they allowed me to order one serving when the minimum was for 2 (Pitmaster platter).
It didn't seem like a lot of food, but I couldn't finished it.
The deviled egg and fries were nice. The Beef brisket was a little too dry for my liking, as I like my brisket fatty which makes to meat more tasty IMO. And pulled pork was ok too.
Had a great time at Fancy Hanks. The smoked meat was nicely cooked and the sauces worked so well with meats. Will be back the next time in Melbourne.
(But will ask for lower seating - bar stools a little uncomfortable for a bloke of my proportions đ
)
We went to Fancy Hanks a few weekends ago for the first time, we ordered the Pitmaster BBQ Platter and got:
đ„ Deviled Eggs
đ„ Mixed Nuts
đ„© Beef Briskets
đ Buffalo Wings
đ Fried Chicken
đ Corn Bread
đ Seasoned Chips
đ„ Coleslaw
Everything was great, full of flavor, good portions and cooked perfectly! The beef brisket was incredibly tender and fell apart so easily with just a touch. The wings were our favorite for sure! Also, the corn bread was amazing & weâre still daydreaming about it. We 100% recommend you to try their platter đ
The only downside was the restaurant space itself. We went there on a somewhat hot day and unfortunately they only have two wind pipes which werenât really helping nor cool. I was struggling with the heat so we had to get the food to go and went home (luckily we live close-by!). So our recommendation is either get a takeaway or wait to dine in until the weather cools down! âïž
This place is the bomb! Everything was perfect, down to the chips and coleslaw. Pulled pork and brisket melts in your mouth, the sauces that come with each dish are outstanding and the service was fantastic and quick - such helpful and friendly staff. I'd recommend adding the blooming onion to your order, you won't regret it!
