This place always seems to be busy at lunch time, so I let my intrigue get the better of me, and decided to stop in to try the banh mi. I was greeted my trays stacked full of crunchy baguettes which was a positive sign. The rest of the store is nondescript, but the staff are so friendly and the display of fresh vegetables and delicious smelling meats are really enticing.
I decided upon a pork chop filling rather than my usual pork belly, and I was happy with my choice. The pork was succulent and full of flavour. The salad veg added that hit of freshness to counteract the fattiness if the meat, and of course that beautiful baguette soaked it all up.
I can now see why this cheap and cheerful place is so popular. Banh mi has really become my new favourite takeaway, and the ones at Master Roll are really good.
Fav banh mi place đ„ Just made to perfection with good portions of roast pork and vegetables. Would sometimes deliberately jump off my train at South Yarra station just to grab a banh mi.
I was pleasantly surprised by the crispy pork banh mi at Master Roll Vietnam in South Yarra. The roll was crusty and fresh. It was stuffed with generous amounts of pickled vegetables and roast pork. There were crispy bits of pork skin and each bite was a real pleasure. Service was quick and easy.
Will definitely return to try their other items in the near future!
Vietnamese authenticity that's convenient and cheap! This is the perfect stop in for a snack, just ensure you tuck into a delicious, fresh Banh mi. All the options look solid but it's the pork that's a real winner.
BEST Banh mi in Melbourne. Hands down! Get it.
Cannot fault the food here. loved the chicken bahn mi, springs rolls and chicken broken rice:)
Best for the budget, easy take away bahn mi, affordable, filled with good meat and vegetables, taste is great. Pho is amazing, the taste is authentic Vietnamese just like in the local country, beef is tender, basil is fresh with hoisin sauce separately served. Ordered spring rolls as well that doesnât disappoint.
No. of Visit: once a month
Overall Rating: 4.2 - 4.5
If I can only choose ONE Vietnamese place around city circle and get bread roll for the rest of my life, I will choose Master Roll.
It's on average the highest CP value, filled up with lots of goodies, and ingredients are always fresh. Services are generally fast, and never a tiny mistakes.
My recommendation is the COLD MEAT ROLL (sometimes Roast Pork Roll is nice as well)
Simply sensational
Found this on Uber eats
Didnât disappoint the rolls were fresh and so were the ingredients , the spring rolls were amazing as too the rice paper rolls
I will be back !!!

Came here for a quick crispy pork Bahn mi meal. The bread is once again where most non-Richmond places tend to fail. It just wasnât yummy and crispy enough. Having said that, I enjoyed the crispy pork, the huge portions and the price was 6.5 which was reasonable
The poached chicken pho is delicious, $2 more expensive than the beef pho but the chicken is free ranged and it has such a refreshing broth.
One of the best Vietnamese rolls Iâve had, theyâre quick, clean and well priced. Although their rice plates werenât that good but theyâre pretty healthy compared to traditional viet restaurants.
Stopped by to pick up a quick lunch on the go. Despite it being 12:30pm and with a decent line inside, once my order had been placed I was able to pick it up about 3 seconds afterwards as they pre-prepare everything and just need to add in your choice of meat and the amount of chilli you desire.
Unsurprisingly I ordered the crispy pork banh mi and it was flavourful, fresh and well-balanced. The sauce and pate complemented the ingredients nicely, the crispy pork was soft and juicy, the crackling was crunchy and added a nice texture, and the bread was nice and soft.
At only $6.50 as well, would highly recommend stopping by to try this place out! Especially if youâre in need of a quick meal or something to have on the go.
I came here yesterday after hearing good things and tried the crispy pork banh mi. It lived up to the hype!! For $6.50, it is incredibly well priced for the size of the roll and amount of ingredients you get inside! The pork is not too fatty, and the veggies are all fresh and crunchy. If youâre in a rush for the train and only have a few dollars, I rate this as the best lunch deal on Toorak Rd đđ
Delicious and fresh tasting banh mi. Their rice paper rolls are also good. The owner is super friendly and the food is just spot on for a little vietnamese spot in South Yarra. If you are looking for a cheap and yummy lunch option, give them a try, you won't be disappointed.
Crispy pork bahn mi. I have ordered this on ubereats it is that good. Crispy roast pork, daikon radish with all the trims. You should go here. Everyone should go here. Expect to be covered in bread crumbs and be sad when it is finished.
Great banh mi, better than the others. Try their crispy roast pork, itâs my favourite. Always busy during lunch time but it wonât take too long to get your food ready. Only few seating is available so better to have it for take away at busy hour.
Mmmmmm, LOVE this place! Super tasty, fresh and cheap - what more could you want?! The rice paper rolls are stuffed with salad, herbs and quality protein (Iâve had the prawn or tofu) and there is a range of tasty dipping sauces. The tofu banh mi is absolutely delish, clean and fresh. No buyers remorse here - you need to set up shop on the northside!

Ordered 2x crackling pork rolls through Uber eats and it was delicious. The bread was crispy, the pickled carrots was good and the crackling pork was very tasty. Would have been nice to have a bit more of the pork đ
If we're in the South Yarra area, my co-workers and I sometimes get lunch here. We've been pretty happy each visit. This family-run Vietnamese corner shop does a roaring trade at lunchtimes during the working week, with lines going out the door.Â
I have always found the cold cuts banh mi thit to have generous portions of meat and other fillings. The baguettes could be a tad bit fresher I suppose, but this is not a bakery so they get their bread delivered instead of making in-house as with many other Vietnamese banh mi shops. Their banh mi sandwich fillings are good quality and flavourful however.
My co workers love the rice paper rolls. Service is fast and friendly. $6.5 for a standard banh mi thit or $7 for 2 filled rice paper rolls is quite exorbitant by Springvale or Footscray standards, but it's a fairly cheap, filling and relatively healthy lunch for South Yarra.

This was the first time I had a Vietnamin roll. I tried it by uber eats. I ordered the pork chops roll. It was really tasty . Perfect pickles , fresh veggies , probably the meat a bit cold but that's normal when you order uber eats. The bread also very fresh. I really enjoyed it. I'll pop into the shop to have one again really soon.
In love with their Chicken Pho! Good value, quick, fresh and the staff is so lovely! Love this place so much when I am lazy to cook on Friday night! Only for take away (you can seat but this is not cosy) Donât hesitate!
Order: #5 Crispy Roast Pork Roll. Overall great tasting banh mi. Although I wish they added more patĂȘ and that the baguette was fresher. Not sure if the baguette is made in-house but does not seem so. The pork was definitely crispy and consisted of a great taste with right amount of marinating. The vegetables was fresh, especially the pickled carrots. Very busy place therefore it was a bit messy and also our table was uncleaned. Would recommend!
We ordered Master Roll Vietnam through UberEats for a work lunch. We ordered chicken, crispy roast pork, meatballs and cold meat Banh Mi's and a couple of different types of spring rolls.
The food was delivered promptly and within the time frame, however the Banh Mi's were cold. I gave mine (crispy roast pork) a quick zap in the microwave and briefly toasted it in the sandwich press which brought it back to life. The crackling on the pork was nice and I also enjoyed the flavouring of the sauces.
We requested to have fresh chilli supplied in a container on the side (as not all in the group like chilli) but this wasn't supplied which was disappointing.
I would have Master Roll Vietnam again, however I would go to the store and eat it warm and fresh.
Verdict: One of the very few genuine cheap eats in South Yarra and is easily the best pound for pound feed in the area. The crispy roast pork banh mi is my personal favourite and best enjoyed during peak lunch hour when a fresh tray of roast pork has just come out of the oven. The haters will turn their nose up at any suggestion of a respectable banh mi anywhere in the vicinity of Toorak Rd and how $6.50 is a rip-off relative to their local in Springvale but for the office workers of South Yarra it really doesnât get any better.
Excellent place, been here several times since starting work nearby. I get the Banh Mi roll.
The flavours are delicious, especially of the sauces and all the veges give it a wonderful texture.
I've found sometimes the meat, towards the end of the day may not be the best.
The bread isn't that great; it's quite chewy.
That being said for $6.50 you really cannot go wrong with getting a banh mi here. Extremely good value.
Staff are friendly, although sometimes a bit slow to respond to customer's waiting to order
Whenever we drive pass Master Roll, we have noticed a queue snaking out the door, mostly during lunch hours, but sometimes even in the morning or mid-afternoon. Got us thinking - are the food that great, or is it because thereâs not much seating inside the modestly decorated joint?
Curiosity got to the better of us, but our determination to avoid having to queue up prevailed, so we ended up with ordering UberEATS. Turns out we only bypassed the physical queue. Despite ordering at 2.30pm, we had to wait over 30 minutes for our order to be prepared by the kitchen. Bless the UberEATS driver who delivered the food to us in less than 10 minutes.
Was it worth the wait? Yup! As long as youâre not starving. $8.50 for a banh mi that was overflowing with succulent grilled chicken pieces, an abundance of crunchy veggies, all nestled in a crisped bun. $12 for a bowl of rice overflowing with with tender grilled pork, and the same generous serve of veggies. I added a fried egg just because; seemed more authentic that way. Great flavours, fuss-free and very filling. I guess the queue is now completely understandable.
The queue outside this busy eatery/takeaway spot says it all. We had a roast pork bahn mi and a chicken pho and they were delicious - plenty of chilli (upon request) and generous portions of chicken and crunchy roast pork. It was really good value!
If you want a quick grab-and-go lunch, then this is a great spot serving fresh and tasty food. Pros: The grilled chicken banh mi is full of sweet flavour, a mild spice (if you want), a decent vegetable crunch and is well portioned; The beef rice paper rolls are light and served with a killer dipping sauce; Service was swift, straightforward and very prompt. Cons: I felt the rice paper rolls were a little pricey ($7 for two medium sized); Perhaps unfair to assume as I only had takeaway, but I think eating in (especially/only at lunch) would feel claustrophobic given the high churn of takeaway customers coming in and waiting for their freshly made food - it was a bit congested.
My go to place in and around south Yarra for a Banh mi. A great price, quick and really tasty. My girlfriend also loves this place and claims it's the best pho she's had in Melbourne! I'll see you again soon master roll.
Lip smacking pho. Ummm. Easily among the top three pho s I have tasted in Melbourne. I have mixed luck with orders. Most times it's an well run restuarant where you can enjoy the food quickly and keep moving. Recommended if you like Vietnamese food.
Best Bahn mi I've had and the service is crazy fast. I go here once or twice a week and it's always great. The crispy pork roll and the duck rice paper rolls are great. Highly recommend.
My favourite grilled chicken bahn mi place of all time. Iâve tried ones that have higher rating than Master Roll, as well as the ones that friends have recommended. This one is still my favourite. Not much of a fan for the other dishes though, like the grilled chicken pho that I tried or the rice rolls.
Went in late afternoon, paid above average for a roast pork Bahn. Positives include the crispy tasty pork (Chinese five spices), fast service and the generous size. Negatives I could pick out, there were some over burnt crunch salty pieces that ruined the flavour, the bread was more chewy than crunchy and the sauce tasted better at other places.
Delicious, cheap, convenient, fresh. This is an excellent place for a quick lunch.
The atmosphere is very basic but clean. The food is on par with Hanoi Hannah minus the cool decor.
Got their Tofu Bahn Mi for just $6.50! Tasted SUPERB! I previously have tasted Baba's bahn mi (in south melbourne market) and Master Roll's bahn mi is BETTER (and cheaper)!
Ambience is okay... Good enough to get in quick, eat, and go out.
Service was not bad.. Although, the cashier could've been a little bit friendlier (hence the 4.0 rating instead of a 5.0), but for a fast food place, no complaints.
Will definitely be back!!!
Delicious tasting banh mi for $6.50 with one option for vegos all taste great. Rice paper rolls are also excellent at $7 part pack (2 rolls), you're hunger will be tamed.
Best to pay with cash as there is a $0.50 (was $1 at one stage) transaction fee which is a bit much. It's an onsite bakery so the rolls are fresh and the ingredients also seem fresh, overall taste is spot on and they don't take long to make the rolls, awesome spot!
Master rolled on Toorak Rd- always the best rice per rolls in Melbourne. Bah made is also always always made to order.
Thanks James Lawrence
Fast, cheap, taste amazing. I can't believe they can offer beautiful Vietnam roll at the price in South Yarra. The bread was crispy and roll was full of flavor. There are some seats to eat in.
Best crispy pork rolls in Melbourne - there's a reason why the line up is out the door most lunch times!
But why do you up your price for Ubereats (8.50 for a roll versus 6.50 instore) when others don't?
Since my friend bought one for me and brought it to school. OMG I fell in love đ this time I came here by myself I love it I love it
(Number 5 crispy roasted pork roll)
This is a local favourite.. you can often see a line out the door which is testament to the quality of the establishment. This is fresh, fast, flavourful and one of the cheapest lunches you can get in South Yarra. I don't think they prepare lunches quicker than this place in the area, you simply queue up, order at the counter and your lunch is usually ready in a matter of minutes. This does depend on what you order as larger dished are I believe are prepared in the kitchen but the trusty Banh Mi is my personal go to.
Cheap and tasteful roast pork Banh mi.
So far This is the best Banh mi, especially the roast pork. It's so crispy and fatty:D.
I always get a fresh crispy roast pork, since i have it as my breakfast.
Note: update the review and give it 5stars, as they keep the taste for this past few years and still great
Very well executed crispy pork Bahn Mi.
Full of flavour and the pork was actually crispy.
Service was efficient and price is good.
Will be back soon.
Quick, tasty and relatively authentic bahn mi. Packed full of flavour, super fast service and great pricing considering its right next door to south yarra station. Highly recommended
They have nailed the perfect Vietnamese Crispy pork belly roll, I can't walk in and get anything else. Never disappoints.
Always busy and the service is incredibly quick.
This place is one of the cheaper lunch options in the area, the banh mi here does not disappoint! Not only is it packed with flavour, the bread is spot on and its one of the more authentic vietnamese banh mi on this side of town. Despite queues, service  is relatively quick! I go out of my way to get lunch here often!
great value, this should be considered as fast food restaurant, not much seat available, but the food was really tasty. size of the beef pho is really small, but the roasted pork roll is really yummy. the place us really busy during lunch time, but they shud listend to their customers what they want, give them more time. i was after a rice paper roll and not a roll, although it does taste good
Great rolls and rice paper rolls. Can't go past the Crispy roast pork roll or duck rice paper rolls. Cheap, quick and with plenty of turn over the food is fresh. While their might be a line out the door it moves quickly.
I've always been really happy with the Viet rolls here. I haven't tried anything else on the menu but the bahn mi are definitely value for money. There's a good amount of meat given whether you have the crispy pork (which is actually crispy) or the chicken. I enjoy the flavour and the large pickled radish that is served in the bun. I also like the option of changing sauces. I have tried the bahn mi with the hoisin peanut sauce (no extra charge) and it's now my go to sauce. The waiting line usually looks long during peak but it goes by really quickly because the staff are on the ball with their orders.
Great Vietnamese place in South Yarra. Great prices for the area too, but still not as cheap as you will find in other suburbs. I normally get a roll with tofu (but not vegetarian) and chilli - really fresh, tasty and my favourite filling combination they offer. It can get very crowded around lunchtime and sometimes there is confusion over who's order they've just made but turnover is quick.
Best pork rolls in South Yarra !! Totally reasonable price, clean and modern shop, friendly service and really quickly prepared fresh in front of you! Fresh crunchy yet soft rolls and the perfect proportions of ingredients..! I'm addicted!
DO: The rolls obviously. The crispy pork is undoubtedly the hero. You won't be disappointed.Â
DON'T: Forget the chilli. No pork roll is ever complete without the fresh chilli.Â
TIP: If you want to go full hardcore Viet (i.e. like me), eat pork roll now, order the broken rice for later and finish off with some rice paper rolls for the freshness.
Every time when I wanna a Vietnam roll, I'll go there and grab one.Â
Never tastes bad, no matter rolls or pho.
Like the chili in the roll so much, which hits the point of me.
Not sure if you are a Grilled Chicken or Pork Bånh MÏ fan but given my ad hoc liking for these rolls (or the families), this would have to top the places which offer this Vietnamese delicacy with consistency .  The rolls are fresh (but not made on premises), crispy skin pork is crispy and incredibly fresh,  the barbecue roasted pork is delightful, they fill the rolls and don't skimp on the good ingredients, and their is a choice of rolls (wholemeal, white etc  )
Although there are many places which offer this lunchtime takeout, I must say this is one of the better ones.....
My favourite restaurant of all time. The crispy roast pork roll and grilled chicken roll was really good! For those who prefer to eat rice, their broken rice menu also taste really great especially because of their fish sauce. Their location makes this place always crowded especially during morning time. The price is very affordable for a generous portion.
My favorite vietnamese roll in this area. The quality and size is really good. The best is pork belly banh mi, unlike other quick+cheap place putting so little meat, their portion is great and so fresh and tasty!
$6.50 for a pork roll is great eating. don't be scared of the fresh chilli.. very good.
......................................,,,,,,,,,,,,,
One of the best Banh mi places that I have been to in melbourne. The quality can be compared to other authentic vietnamese Banh mi places the you find in springvale or Footscray. $6 per roll is not bad for toorak price. What I like is that they use very fresh ingredients, generous meat portions. Love the crispy pork roll the most. It makes a great place to have a quick lunch. Does not get full points from me because other dishes like broken rice or rice paper rolls are average but hey, they have done a great job as "master roll" .
You can't go past Master Roll Vietnam for a cheap, tasty lunch-to-go when in South Yarra. The ingredients are always fresh and the service fast - even when there's a line out the door (which there often is).
My favourite go-to is the Grilled Chicken Bånh MÏ, which comes with marinated grilled chicken thigh, house made butter, pùté, soy sauce, cucumber, coriander, pickled carrot and daikon on a crunchy roll (I always add fresh chilli for extra bite). Ready in minutes, delish and so so cheap!
I love the concept of a Banh Mi. All of these ingredients which you wouldn't assume work together but do. Influenced by the French (which you can see in the baguette and pate) and filled with quintessentially Vietnamese ingredients (pickled carrot, daikon, coriander, meat) this is just the best lunch especially when it's from Master Roll Vietnam.
I ordered their speciality - the crispy pork belly banh mi. My preference is without daikon but I add fresh chilli and a little hoisin. I just love the flavour of the pork belly and hoisin combined with all of the other elements. It was delicious. All of the flavours work together so well. The crunchy yet soft baguette with butter and pate, the generous crispy salty pork belly with the sweet carrots and hoisin with lots of coriander and chilli coming through. Yum. So filling and so fresh.
I added on the prawn and crab Spring Rolls, whilst on initial inspection I was disappointed in the portion size for $5 I found them to be perfect. Full of filling and flavour - you could really taste the crabmeat and they were freshly made and fried whilst I waited. Perfect with the accompanying fish sauce dressing. I only wished I ordered a second portion.
Service was so friendly and easy - I'm already looking forward to my next lunch from MRV.
Good, but very inconsistent. I like the crispy pork roll and grilled chicken roll. But the proportions of the ingredients are inconsistent, highly dependant on who made them. Sometimes they also crushed the bread roll when cutting it.
There are so many great looking casual restaurants in Melbourne that you need an enhanced memory, or method of remembering, to note them all down for future return visits. Master Roll Vietnam fits into this category nicely. A few weeks ago Catherine and I were walking along Toorak Road when we passed by, after breakfast, on our way to dessert! The modern Vietnamese eatery, using clean and minimalist décor, with an eye catching logo, made an impact.

Wow, what a taste explosion. Didn't know what to get so I asked the staff and they recommended the Crispy Pork Roll. It was deliciously spiced with a fresh chilli and vegetable kick combined with tender + crispy pork. My last meal in Melbourne definitely delivered!
Delicious rolls! Perfect for lunch but make sure you go early as the line is always out the door. Service though is relatively quick so you won't have to wait too long.
Crispy pork roll a winner!. Best Banh Mi in the area. No minimum to pay on card. I'd recommended ordering with extra meat, which bumps the price up to a still reasonable $7.50.
Delicious and affordable banh mi!! Full of flavour and loved the fresh herbs/salad in it! Always a queue during lunch time. Yet to try their pho.
Any banh mi place that does a crispy roast pork option (with no surcharge mind you!) already has my look in. Of all the banh mis I've tried in Melbourne, this definitely comes up on tops, for quality and balance of filling and a great price. They make their own butter and pate and you really taste the difference. Pork is crispy, salty and warm and you can get a good dash of it throughout.Â
The rice paper rolls are also solid but you'd need a few to really make a meal out of it. They have a duck option and I feel that should be noted. I've also had a few of the rice meals (the curse of the night options) and they are acceptable.
Today was my first time visiting this place around 9am before going to work. I ordered roast pork bahn mi. It was fast, fresh, delicious. On top of that, the staff members were friendly, which I found impressive for a Sunday morning. I might re-visit tomorrow again for another breakfast âșïž
I received my roast pork roll in under a minute from ordering and it was warm, crispy, fresh and tasty! For $8.50 it was a great quick option for a potentially healthy meal under $10 with no wait time despite having plenty of orders and I would happily go back again for some more crunchy pork!
Super delicious and affordable banh mi, with various branches around Melbourne. Theyâre super fast. You order and youâll get your order in less than two minutes. Perfect when youâre finding for something easy and delicious when youâre on the go, or just craving for banh mi in general đ.
