Best coffee in Melbourne, with great, always friendly service. Great cafe to meet, or buy coffee and choclates for home. Thanks Eugene, and the team at Cottle!
My favourite coffee and breakfast place at the next door south Melbourne neighborhood. The service is out of the world as n the food is fresh and filled with fresh herbs.
Cottle on Coventry is a wonderful cafe nestled in the foodie heartland in South Melbourne. Staff are very freindly and attentive, the cafe itself is warm and welcoming and the coffee and food are superb. Hardware Society have a real contender for their baked eggs! The cottle baked eggs are fantastic and good value for money.
Ordered some takeaway coffees here. Great tasting coffee, quick service and vibrant environment. Has some pretty unique coffee and coffee making tools available for purchase as well.
Looking around in south Melbourne market, it’s a good place to visit and grab a coffee. Fresh roasted coffee beans. Definitely Will come back.
I chose Cottle this morning for our team breakfast which was quite nice of me given I don’t drink coffee and it’s got a roastery inside. They sell beans and roast them daily and it’s a pretty cute place. Staff were super friendly and were more than willing to split the bill which you certainly don’t get at the more ‘hipster’ surrounding cafes. Food options were pretty basic but I was happy enough with my smashed avo and chai. Definitely did the job and their cake selections looked sensational. The menu may have kept it simple but while it won’t set the world on fire I couldn’t fault what I experienced
Very polite and extremely friendly staff. I had the Baked Eggs with spinach and cheese. I bought my own fresh chilli and they were happy to chop it up. Very tasty and I will be back. Thank you! 😊
Excellent coffee - the beans are fresh roasted daily. Friendly and quick service and well priced. I prefer this to Market Lane Coffee which I think is good but overpriced.
Excellent coffee and service. The food menu is simple. If you're looking for something hipster and food photos for your social media then Cottle isn't for you. Food menu is nothing fancy, no added frills or overcharged flower garnishes. Good and simple yet affordable. Beans are also available for purchase. Staff are knowledgeable about their roasts. You can purchase whole beans or staff will grind them at a grind size of your choosing.
I came here today with my sister for a quick lunch before exploring the South Melbourne Market. The staff were friendly and took our orders quickly and the food came out in good time, too. The exterior of the cafe is gorgeous and inside isn't bad either but could be a little more stylish! I ordered the toasted chicken and avocado sandwich ($10) and my sister got the smashed Avo on toast with Hashbrowns ($14+$2.50). Food wasn't bad, although my sandwich had a weird lemon flavour in the avocado (perhaps they did this as a preservative measure?) and the salad on the side was pretty unnecessary and added nothing to the meal. Probably wouldn't visit this cafe again, not because it was bad, but there are just so many options available and it wasn't standout.
Ordered the little breakfast and latte. The little breakfast arrived in two plates. Simple and good enough for me for a lazy weekend breakfast. Nothing fancy. Coffee was good. Friend ordered the croque madame and long black and was eyeing my little breakfast most of the time. Service was friendly. Good place to chill and catch up with friends.
Stumbled into this place whilst visiting the South Melbourne Market. Pretty good food selection and service with reasonable prices. We had the Tuscan brunch bake, gnocchi and the little breakfast. All were done quite well, though my Tuscan bake was a bit over cooked. Nevertheless, it was still tasty. Would return here again!
It's hard to find a table on Sunday mornings, but luckily we didn't need to wait for long. Good selection of items for the brunch menu. The tomatoes are tasty with the balsamic vinegar. I just wished the drizzle wasn't so close to the edge of the plate where my knife and fork touches every time I put them down.
My first day in this year's Melbourne stay started with brunch at Cottle. My New Orleans “creole style” seafood gumbo – something I haven’t had in Auckland – was spicy & special. My wife had sweet potato & quinoa breakfast stack. Croque Madame was house ham, egg & cheese sandwich; “rosemary & thyme field mushrooms on basil with smash browns” was mushrooms with cheese & egg. Kid’s little breakfast with bacon, egg, hash brown & toast, was really not “little”. It was an enjoyable brunch. (Food – 4/5; Service – 3/5; Ambience – 3/5)
Went there because Chez Dre was full. However pleasantly surprised to see Tuscan Brunch Bake on the menu! Been dying for a baked egg dish in this below zero Melbourne weather. It was very nice, fully enjoyed it 😊. Home made chai was a bit too spicy for me.
Our table was right where the other door (not used) was. And we saw too many people trying to get in through that door. One suggestion: a large pot plant outside the door perhaps?
Visited this unassuming little gem with my wife and two children and found the staff warm and inviting, even with our huge two seater pram. The coffee was spot on, breakfast was delicious and muffin perfect. Lovely start to our weekend.
We discovered this gem while visiting the market. Great service - we didn't have to ask for water or wait very long to order. And the food came out very quickly. We ordered mushrooms with haloumi, egg and spinach and lots of other yummy things in it. Beautiful presentation, great flavours. The coffee was also excellent. The position is great too - on the shady side of the street (it was a hot day) lots of room and not noisy. We will definitely go back.
Best choice near South Melbourne Market. Good quality coffee that is cheaper and better than places at the market. Service is also good and there are plenty of places to sit, including for lone diners. Our regular spot now.
So surprised how underrated this cafe is amongst the South Melbourne big names. I hadn't even noticed it before being introduced to it! It's half food store and half cafe. I was skeptical looking at the menu with brunch dishes hovering around the $10-15 mark. BUT, our croque monsieur, Tuscan brunch bake and sweet potato and quinoa breakfast stack... all really delicious! Friendly service, very generous portions and unbelievably good prices in Melbourne brunch scene. Excellent little gem and highly recommended!
This place may be less famous than some of its South Melbourne neighbours but it really shouldn't be missed. For those in the know it's an institution, with arguably the best coffee in the area, amazing food and cakes and a more relaxed feel than some of its other more 'instagramed' competitors
Delicious food. Great bacon, great simple foods. All the ingredients were very good. As was the coffee. Also a great fit out. Give it a go..
Right on the edge of the "so close to South Melbourne Market that now you have to sit in someone's lap" zone, this place provides welcome elbow room. And good food. And generous serves. And good coffee. And attentive service.
Freshly Roasted Coffee. Th8s is the essence of a great coffee experience. Real coffee real service.
Local coffee enthusiast .. Best coffee in and around South Melbourne. Only regret that I hadn't discovered Cottle's sooner.
Breaky. Yummy Tuscan bake and latte great staff service top cafe.
Great food, great service. Nice coffee, good selection of food and great price. Service is always quick even when they are busy. A lovely place.
Hahahoho!! Surely the best .... Hahahoho!!
Surely the best coffee in melbourne.
Very reasonable priced brunch sets with great taste. Very kind, and very passionated staffs.
Yummy all round. After visiting another cafe in South Melbourne and getting served up the worst coffee, it was a pleasure to step into Cottle on Coventry. Beautifully rich and creamy coffee and a delish' apple/blueberry muffin with crumble top. Will definitely go back for a repeat visit.
My new favorite spot. Very down to earth and kind staff and great coffee.
It's grown because it's good. Cottle Coffee played a role in my life the first time I immigrated to Australia. My now-ex wife was keen on buying a high-end espresso machine. After a lot of shopping around, my X bought a small Rancilio here, didn't like it, and exchanged it for an $800 Bodum coffee-maker that Cottle sold. That espresso maker looked futuristic, like a spaceship from Planet Coffee. We thought that because Bodum was a quality Swiss brand, it would work well. Unfortunately, our first one blew up after about 6 months -- not through any fault of our own, because we read the farking manual. Manufacturing defect. We took it back to Cottle, and I think we got on the nerves of Richard C. and his mum, who considered us whingeing Seppos. Bodum sent us a new one, which shorted out after three weeks. We talked to the company rep in Sydney, who said they'd send us a third machine, but she couldn't guarantee it would be any better than the first. So we returned it and got a full refund.
Now that I'm back Down Under, I saw that Cottle has expanded and is selling coffee/pastries/sandwiches. Before we got on the nose with him, Richard Cottle showed my X and me how he roasted the beans. He's serious about his craft, and it shows in the quality of the coffee here. The large flat white I had was impeccable -- robust flavour without being bitter, not quite as strong as diBella (my favourite coffee roaster in Melbourne) but with full, rounded taste notes. There's a nice selection of baked goods, many crafted by a local patissiere. When I lived here before, Cottle wasn't a cafe, but it has done well with its expansion into steaming its own beans.
I found no fault with the service. They made my coffee quickly enough, brought my apple-rhubarb crumble over to my table and asked if I'd like a dollop of clotted cream with it. Of course! I didn't say "Hi" to Richard when he popped out of the roasting op for fear that he'd toss me out on my arse, but the busy staff seemed to be treating everyone courteously. And I notice Cottle is no longer selling that Bodum machine.
One of Best coffee in Melbourne.
This is my favorite cafe in Melbourne. If you go to southmelbourne, you should stop by and try the coffee.
Since when I went there once, I keep going there even though I have to walk 10 mins from my house.
Staffs are very nice and kind, the shop is pretty and the coffee is exceptional.
Great coffee beans. This is where I usually get my coffee beans. Great range of options. I especially like the award winning 'espresso' beans. Not as pricey as seven seeds. Friendly service.
Beef Casserole. Went for a brunch at Cottle on Coventry. Opted for beef casserole which was really tasty - for the drink I ordered a delicious Belgian hot chocolate.
Staff is really friendly and the store had a large collection of artisan teas, chocolates and coffee beans.
Will be back to try the piadina.
My friends and I decided to give Cottle on Coventry a go after seeing the local police contingent exit with take-away goodies in hand. We took the table at the back beside the open fireplace. Perfect for a cold Melbourne Sunday morning.
The menu is not the usual stock of poached or scramble eggs and Bircher muesli. I opted for the sweet potato fritter, sautéed spinach and fried eggs on sourdough. Friend No. 1 opted for the breakfast Piadina (Italian flat bread with yummy fillings) and Friend No. 2 had thickly sliced ham, eggs and spinach.
Reasonably priced around $14 for the meal and $3.50 for a lemongrass & ginger tea.
If you're a coffee lover, they have a roaster on site and a large range of single origin, organic, fair trade, rain forest alliance and blended coffees. And there's a retail section of treats and equipment too.
What a find - I'll be back!
Coffee is consistently good and their beans worth buying for home. Love the $8 coffee and cake deal. Enough seating and love the smell of fresh coffee all through the cafe.
Talk about coffee culture, this place is drowning in it. Their coffee is excellent and service is great.
Cottle is another South Melbourne institution on Coventry St, and we get all our coffee and loose leaf tea here.
Love the reno, and takeaway coffee is quick and decent. We sat down on a busy, sunny Sunday afternoon in spring and our orders were somehow forgotten, but staff remedied that immediately with complimentary cake. They are also one of the few places that don't charge double for a large babycino. If we're just having coffee, we much prefer Cottle to the painfully hip coffee joints nearby.
Best Coffee. We buy Cottle coffee beans for home, so were delighted they decided to renovate. Lovely cafe, very good coffee, good service, nice macaroons....nothing to complain about here.
This is a cosy cafe perfect for a winter afternoon. They have an open fire that makes for a warming atmosphere. The coffee is great and the soups looked good. They also have a wide selection of coffee beans and other products for purchase (jams, chutneys, nuts, chocolates). A good stop in if near South Melbourne market
Cottle Coffee has been roasting coffee in Melbourne for almost 100 years. Situated in the same location at 300 coventry street South Melbourne Cottle Coffee is brewing, roasting and wholesaling beans from all over the world - Costa Rica, Australia, Indonesia and more… They have a 80 kilogram roaster in the back and an air-roaster as well. They wholesale beans to cafes in Melbourne or direct to the public. The exciting news is that Cottle Coffee is opening next door a cafe in the next couple of weeks! Recently expanded into the empty plot next door Cottle has gone from friendly local beans haunt to fantastic cafe and coffee haven! Double the size, super high roofs, wrap around coffee bar and beans galore! There is a relaxed friendly vibe and the tables are full of happy caffeine sippers and kiddies smiling over cakes! Coffee is great, smooth, creamy, nice big cup and the sugar is available in a cute hob top expresso jug! It would be rude not to sample one of the wonderful cakes on display and the chocolate caramel cake is too pretty to not try! Shiny chocolate top, wonderfully crisp bottom and a glorious layer of shiny sticky caramel inside. Absolutely divine! The Caramel is to die for!! Tums full we happily head off knowing that Cottle will be on our list to come back very soon!
This place is one of our favourite coffee in Melbourne. They also offer a combo small coffee and piadina (chicken and spinach with alioli my best) by 12$. The flavour of the coffee is incredible. We ordered a smash avo with 2 poached eggs some time ago and it was delicious. You can buy also coffee beans from different countries to make your own home made coffee. I love this place. Very jummy food
Amazing coffee store in South Melbourne.

Wonderful store roasted coffee and friendly staff. Love supporting local cafes - better than the famous “chains” that is popping up around South Melbourne~
Prices are also most reasonable in the area - and that includes the coffee accessories. I bought the Moka pot, and they have me 250g of free coffee beans along with it!
