Came here for the first time as I had a craving for ice cream, and so glad I did. I ordered the pistachio gelato. Absolutely delicious, I'm so glad this is close to work, I think I will be coming here a lot in the warmer weather. The shop itself is quite pretty, they have a gourmet grocery section which I will definitely explore further when I next visit.

Stumbled upon this gem on a Saturday night and despite it being packed, the line moved pretty quickly. Everyone’s entitled to only 2 flavor tastings. Got the Hazelnut and Pandan and Coconut. They were amazing! Not overly sweet and fragrant enough. Easily one of my favourite ice cream places in Melbourne!

My Rating: 4.5

Gelateria Primavera is a quant vintage looking little shop, its like you've stepped back in time to the 1960's era.  Very simple set up and the store is shared with Spring Street Grocer which stock some very interesting food products and fresh produces. I often see people wander in to get coffee too.

Gelateria Primavera has been around for the longest time and I have visited quite a number of times over the years in all 4 seasons in the year and winter is no exception.

It is a bit out of the way from the CBD, so its only if you're nearby, passing through, or next door watching a show then you'd come for a visit.

🔆LOCATION🔆
This cute little shop is on Spring Street near the corner of Bourke Street. Easiest way to get there from the city is to take the tram from Bourke Street and get off at the last stop before the tram turns off Spring Street. It is only a short 1 minute walk away.

🔆SERVICE🔆
The staff behind the counter is friendly and if you're uncertain what flavour you want, you can ask to taste test and also ask for recommendations as well.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
Please note that Gelateria Primavera is Cash Only.

1 scoop $5.00
2 scoops $7.20
3 scoops $8.80

Option to select to have your ice cream in a cup or cone

I do not know how often they change their flavours, but as at 30th July 2019 they are as follows:
=Gelati Flavours=ChocolateSalted CaramelHoneycomb & Roasted PistachioPistachio Di BronteHazelnut IGP PiedmontePear, Vanilla & ChocolateBanana, Walnut & Dulce De LecheWhite Chocolate Orange & Sesame SeedsYoghurt & Blackberry Jam
=Sorbetti Flavours=LemonCoconut & GingerMandarin & GrapefruitRaspberry & RosewaterMango & PassionfruitDark Chocolate

🔆VERDICT🔆I decided to get 2 scoops for $7.20 in a cup.

Flavours selected:
Honeycomb & Roasted PistachioBanana, Walnut & Dulce De Leche

Both flavours were very delicious. I prefer the Honeycomb and Roasted Pistachio because it had more flavour from both wheras the banana was very light. The walnut pieces were huge which was quite nice.

We popped in for ice cream last night in the dead of winter (why not) and while I’ve always noticed this place I’d never previously visited. Now I only wish I had gone sooner! At $7.20 for two scoops it’s pretty expensive but you can certainly taste the quality and it was just so flavoursome. I had hazelnut and chocolate and while I never ever get chocolate it was probably the best tasting chocolate ice cream I’d ever tried. I also sampled the coconut and ginger gelato and the mango and passion fruit which was also utterly delicious

*CASH ONLY* Really great gelato with natural, authentic flavours. It's a tie between Primavera and Pidapipo for best in Melbourne.

Don't forget their cold pressed juices too. Coffee is always good and served with a smile. Have a browse through the connected City Grocer while you are waiting for some great ready to heat meals and other speciality products.

Right next to Princess theatre and is within the free tram zone. The surroundings is very lively day and night.

My partner and I ordered honeycomb and hazelnut gelato. It was rich and creamy, not overly sweet, just perfect. We got 2 scoops and for the price I think you pay for the quality of the food and scoops are a little abundant too. Would go back to try other flavours!

'Totally yum, slightly expensive yet value for money' is how we would like to describe this one.

Out of the Honeycomb with roasted pistachio and yuzu Yoghurt, honeycomb with roasted pistachio was our favorite. Yuzu was refreshing too.

They have very limited options for anyone and everyone including Vegans and Vegetarians but I'm sure everyone would like something.

Customer friendly.

Consistently delicious gelato after all these years. The crowd has somewhat died down here, with the influx of so many new gelateria, but Gelateria Primavera is still one of the best around.

A concise menu that with rotating flavours, I don't think I have ever had one that I didn't like. The gelato are wonderfully creamy and smooth, and the sorbets are light and refreshing. Flavours are pronounced, and it's all natural and nothing artificial.

The serving size could be a bit bigger, but then again you could give me a tub of gelato and I will still say "more please!".

Thanks for the treat Timinmelbourne!

Located near Parliament station -I love that Gelateria Primervera's interior invites you into a 'Little Italy' of its own. Connected to an organic/speciality grocery store and cheese store downstairs, it's a great pit stop if you're in the area to have a look at their array of artisanal flavours or take a wander downstairs if you're killing time. I've tried several flavours and have enjoyed them all thoroughly - their flavours rotate often (which I like) so you can be assured there's a flavour to suit your cravings whether savoury or sweet. My only issue is that there isn't much seating so this is more of a 'grab-and-go' spot. Great for a pit stop when exploring the city!

The gelato place is my all time favourite! They are located near Parliament. With their lovely interia, making us feel like we are in Italy or somewhere in Europe. They also have organic /healthy groceries inside and the small cheese shop downstairs. They dont have a lot of table probably 3 small tables for 2 ppl.

Their ice cream flavours always change, which is a good thing as we get to try new artisan flavours every time we visit. Really recommend you to check them out.

Had gelato here a couple of times. I am Italian and I know how gelato should feel and taste like. I read comments saying that it didn't taste much. Italian gelato is not as creamy as Australian gelato or ice-cream. It's maybe more milky and nutty or fruity (depending on the flavour) than creamy, and I thought Primavera's tasted and felt perfectly traditional - loved it!

Up at the top end of town in Spring Street, at the entrance of the Spring Street Grocer and close to the Princess Theatre, is a little piece of gelato heaven. At Gelato Primavera a combination of traditional techniques and innovative flavours produces some of the best gelato anywhere in Melbourne.

Inside the gelateria a sweep of terrazzo leads to the gleaming marble counter and its rows of lidded pozzetti. The gelato is made fresh onsite each day. No additives, just natural ingredients and seasonal fruit, so the old-style pozzetti containers are essential to keep the gelato fresh by reducing its exposure to the air.

Handwritten on a scroll of brown paper, the day’s gelato menu changes regularly. With around 16 flavours, there is a mix of the classics (like fior di latte – a true test of gelato excellence) and not-so-traditional (such as saffron with candied pear and roasted pinenuts), as well as dairy free options (sorbetti).

Seating is very limited. Best to take your gelato for a stroll.

If you are after something other than gelato, there are also cold pressed juices, non-dairy smoothies and coffee from the gleaming espresso machine. And as it is open until quite late (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays or 11pm on other nights), Gelato Primavera is ideal for a post-theatre treat.

When it comes to gelato in the CBD, there’s only really one place for me and this is it. Personal favourite flavours are pistachio and fior di latte – the latter (“flower of milk”) is said to be gelato in its purest form given it comprises just milk, cream and sugar. Think of it as the “margherita” of gelato flavours – leaving no room for the gelateria to hide when it comes to either quality of ingredients nor technique and its mere offering is typically a very good indicator of a gelateria’s credentials. Summer’s fading fast but thankfully your gelato cravings don’t have to.

Gelateria Primavera is a part of Spring Street Grocer which is kind of a boutique deli for especially Italian food. I haven’t been to their cheese section but was dying to try their famous ice cream. I guess I had big expectations after all reviews and rave about the place, so it was a bit underwhelming for me. I had hazelnut one, for the flavour it was pretty good but the texture was a bit icy while expecting a smooth, creamy, good ol’ Italian gelato. My friend had lemon sorbet which was better than ice cream, fresh, lemony, consistent texture with what a good sorbet can be. Thought I should mention their service and staff is pretty friendly.

It was 39 degrees and I was a bit hesitant to grab some gelato, it was 2 blocks walk and by the time it came out of the containers I was scared that it'd melt within seconds. Well it definitely held together pretty well as we sought refuge at the premise.
I was a bit bummed that they didn't have any coconut variations, they do rotate certain flavours quite often and is identified on some parchment paper on the wall. I got their pistachio and fior di latte gelato and a watermelon and mint sorbet. The gelato was nice and creamy, both flavours were excellent. The sorbet as a finisher was nice, left me feeling refreshed from the mint. Wishing the watermelon was more intense but I still enjoyed it.
Glad this gelateria exists in my corner of the CBD because there aren't many artisanal gelaterias in the CBD.

This gelato was delicious. I especially loved the salted caramel - it was sweet but not sickeningly so. I also liked the subtle flavours of the honey and lavender (try not to get this mixed with other flavours!)

I also tried the sorbet, but I'm not a fan of sorbet in general so I can't really say much about that. It seemed decent though.

The price seems fair, considering that pretty much every establishment charges a steep amount for their ice cream. The cups seem small but the servers were surprisingly generous. It is worth it.

Had three scoops of gelato/sorbet in a cup; portion size is much smaller compared to other places for the price. However the flavours they have are rather interesting and unique; tried the chocolate gelato, nectarine/peach sorbet and 'turkish delight with orange and pistachio' sorbet.

The chocolate flavour tasted like 70% dark chocolate, rich but not too sweet. The nectarine/peach flavour has the actual fruit bits blended into the sorbet so it feels like eating a puree in sorbet form; nothing artificial, simply tasty and delightful. Finally the 'turkish delight with orange and pistachio' was a gamble, had no idea how the flavour would turn out. It has a candy sweet and floral taste with a hint of orange and actual pistachio bits. Flavour was different and did take a few bites to accustom but was actually quite good.

Overall the gelato/sorbet was satisfying; enjoyed three drastically different flavours each with a subtly different texture due to the ingredients in them.

By far the best gelato i've had in Melbourne.

The service wasn't too bad, the servers were quite friendly. Ambience wise, it was tucked away at an area that was rather quiet on a Sunday night but there was a short line anyway. Seats were located instore amongst the shelves lined with their products.

I ordered 3 flavors; lemon, pistachio and hazelnut. Grace had the lemon and she liked it but as for me it was too sour for my liking. The pistachio was good, creamy and yummy. The hazelnut was the best though! The flavor was so light but creamy at the same time.

Would definitely be back.

Had their Coconut Turmeric Ginger, Fior di Latte and Cardamom Roasted Pistachio. The Coconut Tumeric Ginger was refreshing with the hints of coconut, while the turmeric and ginger flavours were rich but not too overpowering. Moreover, the Fior di Latte was satisfying as it was rustic yet mouth-watering. Last but not least, the Cardamom Roasted Pistachio was equally delectable as the cardamom was fragrant and coupled with the roasted pistachio, which gave it a very complete flavour. I loved how their gelato here is not too overly creamy and they have unique flavours that are flavourful yet neither too overpowering nor too subtle. I would highly recommend their Coconut Turmeric Ginger and Cardamom Roasted Pistachio for people who like spices as I really felt that they did a great job balancing the different flavours within each gelato.  Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the hazelnut and chocolate ice cream, which is really rare because usually most places make rich flavours very sickening to the point where I die of thirst. The sorbet was also delicious, but is it just me, but does anyone else get this frothy texture in their mouth after the sorbet dissolves? Not a fan of that ahaha. The flavours here were spot though on and very creamy as well. Only negative was how limited the menu is and how weird some of the flavours are.

For $5, the scoop is generous and the quality is outrageously good – their sorbets are just so creamy! The plum sorbet has a beautiful, saliva-inducing tartness that is rounded out nicely by the natural sweetness of a sorbet. Close to the Princess Theatre, Gelateria Primavera is at the front entrance of the Spring Street Grocer. The gelato menu – handwritten on brown paper – changes daily, with around 16 flavours including dairy free sorbets. All the gelati is made fresh each day by Primavera’s two gelati chefs from seasonal natural ingredients, with no additives, and is stored in shiny round pozzetti tubs inset into the red marble counter top.

The menu ranges from the traditional – chocolate, pistachio, fior de latte – to some rather innovative and unusual flavours, such as rose lassi.

Great gelato tonight at Gelateria Primavera! When were in the CBD this is our go to gelato bar. They always have an interesting range of specials and tonight was no exception, with a Mother's Day special of Rose flavoured ice cream and a Cardamon and Pistachio ice cream. I have yet to find a better Gelato place than this. This is my favourite one! I love this place.

I've been going here for at least a year, and a review about this place is long overdue.

The salted caramel is something you must try! It is essential that you devour this magnificent creation at least once in your life. It's that amazing. Unlike many gelato or dessert places, this taste like salted caramel. You will feel it, you will taste it when you try it. I have had many people doubt me on how amazing this place is, only to turn to me and say how delicious their gelato was. What separates this place from all the other places is that the texture of the gelato is incredible. It doesn't feel like ice-cream, it doesn't feel like custard, it feels like gelato. All the other flavours, while in my opinion don't excel like the salted caramel, I would strongly recommend that you try. The salted caramel is a 50/10, whereas most of the other flavours are like a 9-10/10. I do feel that, the portion sizes have gone down based on ONE experience (my most recent and unfortunately, my most negative which I will explain in further detail) and it may be specific to that instance and when I return the portions would return to the portions of old. **Despite the decrease in portion size from this particular unfriendly server on the particular night I had my salted caramel it was what I considered to be reasonable. However I believe I got less because from what I remember (and memory can be somewhat unreliable, and unfortunately I can only go to this place every now and then) because based on the photos taken from my previous visits, the portion I was given can best described as a bit of a scoop that is on top of a full cup as opposed to a full or close to full scoop on top of a full cup** CORRECTION.  **I would like to emphasise that both of these portion sizes are what I consider to be reasonable for the price and the quality of gelato.**

I have had one negative experience, and it seems to be the common occurrence with this place based on some of the reviews I've been reading and that is with this place spotty service. Essentially I encountered a rather, what appeared to be, an unhappy girl that served my friends and I. I promise you I wasn't being vulgar, aggressive, or a jackass in anyway. I gave her the money in a reasonably sufficient time and I provided an amount that did not require a lot of change to be given. Also prior to payment, based on my assumption that this was a small, humble establishment and armed with the knowledge that businesses prefer cash payments, I thoughtfully paid with cash and I did not ask if they had American Express or if they had EFTPOS services. I smiled and maintained eye-contact, as well as remained behind the gelato/counter and thus respecting her personal space, and me nor my friends consumed alcoholic beverages prior or after the purchase, nor did we bring any drinks or outside food into the establishment. The tone of my voice was not raised at any point during my interaction, nor did it possess any sadness, anger, or condescension  The party I was with also behaved in the same manner as me.

I can only theorise that I  have wronged this person was due to a cultural misunderstanding (i.e too much eye-contact), and/or by her expectations we did not order quick enough. However I believe time wasn't the cause of this server's apparent resentment as only one person in my party took approximately a minute to order, which I believe is reasonable given that this particular person had never been here before, and we had no one lining up behind us either, or that she had a long day and had to withstand the unpleasantries that occur in the hospitality industry.

I would like to emphasise this is one negative experience that I had in many, many, many visits to this place. The other times, that I remember, were staff acting what I consider to be normal--in that they either smiled or were focused on their work, and in general did not look at me with disdain or contempt. But if you wish to mentally prepare yourself or avoid being served by this person and you do decide to come here, she was brunette and looked like Audrey Tautou from the French film Amelie. Naturally, I cannot predict if she has changed her hair in any way, and out of respect of the person I will not be updating this post to reflect any new hairstyles, makeup or any new distinguishing features unless she does something that I consider to be intentionally malevolent towards me, or if I see fit, another customer.

Other staff here appear to be fine based on past experience. I've been served by a male and what I believe to be blonde girls (potentially the same girl) and have had no problems with them.

This brunette did not leave a good impression on the service but my friends still enjoy the gelato very much so it goes to show how good this place is. Despite how much it makes me sad when I do remember the last time I had gelato because I surprisingly had a somewhat unpleasant experience, it's not enough to detract how amazing the gelato was.

UPDATE 27/1/16: I ended up contacting the manager of this place because I've been informed via Zomato comments that someone had a similar experience. The manager was very friendly and helpful and will discuss the behaviour with the employee. More details in the comments section.

UPDATE 19/2/16: Went there the other day, after debating with myself whether to have Green Tea softserve at Emporium or my favourite Salted Caramel Gelato, despite the longer trip I had to take I willed myself to come back here. I did have my doubts, would I be facing her again? If so what would I do? As I got off the tram, and walked in the showery mist to head to Gelato Primavera, I breathed a sigh of relief as I saw smiles and overall a positive atmosphere, and served by this cool bro and this young lady (but mainly the cool bro). Totally the opposite of my previous experience, they were actually nice, and I'm 90% sure that I got a relatively bigger serving from this dude than the girl with short brown hair. But to me the serving size, wasn't the best thing, it was the fact that I can come here without feeling bad.

Delicious sorbets! It is no wonder that this is labelled one of the best in Melbourne! The dark chocolate and mango orange were perfect for a hot day, and the freshness of the latter perfectly balanced out the intensity of the chocolate. My only issue with this place is the drinks, the chai tastes a bit dirty and was not strained properly. However, the brilliance of the sorbet tainted this for me, so I'll be back for more this summer!

Sun  9:00am- 11:00pm I can’t believe I never came to this ice cream shop earlier! This ice cream shop is part of a small grocery store that specialises in a variety of gourmet products. The place is very funky and colourful and it’s a great place to explore at night. There aren’t many tables and chairs so be prepared to stand and devour the deliciousness of the ice cream.  The ice cream is to die for! It’s probably the best ice cream I’ve had in Melbourne! The menu changes every now and then so there is plenty of variety to tantalise your taste buds. They offer gelato and sorbet. The consistency of them were light, creamy and refreshing. They had the perfect amount of sweetness and they weren’t overly rich or sickly like other ice cream.

5ish words. Dairy-free chocolate ice-cream. Need I say more? Being vegan, one of the many things I "miss" is good chocolate icecream but seriously, this was the best one I've ever had! It was extremely rich and creamy and I'm pretty sure it's classified as Gelato but the texture was soo spot on, I had to ask about 3 times just to be sure it had no dairy! We also got the strawberry sorbet, yum! Staff is super friendly, the guy serving us on Saturday night was about to finish his shift but he waited for us (sorry for making you wait while we took forever to decide)! Only problem is it's a little pricey but honestly, if you want greater quality, the price is expected to be a bit higher than usual. But oh boy, is it worth it! Probably the best gelato I've had in Melbourne so far and that's saying a lot because I do enjoy my gelato!

Cute little Italian deli, serving gelato out the front. They had a mix of traditional flavours, as well as some interesting ones! They're open pretty late, so perfect place to pop into for after dinner dessert!

One of the best gelaterias I have been to anywhere. I can't recommend it highly enough. I adore the pistachio and the cardamon and pistachio whereas the valhrona chocolate and chocolate are family favorites. The quality is exceptional and the ever changing innovative flavour combinations which supplement the rang if flavours simply amazing. Cantucci and vino santo, elderberry and yoghurt, blueberry and goat curd. Wonderful gelati complimented by passionate and enthusiastic staff. A Melbourne MUST.

My friend and I have been meaning to go here for a while and it certainly did not disappoint. The gelato here is simply amazing! My friend and I both got a medium cup with three flavours. Some of the flavours we chose include Ricotta and lemon, hazelnut, cardamom and pistachio and lychee and Jasmine. My favourite was the ricotta and lemon special.. will definitely have to go back before they take it off the menu. Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves gelato!

What a treat!! That's all I can say... Amazing gelato, full of bold flavors. I've been meaning to come here for a while and it was worth the walk from my place to here under rain. (Un)fortunately this place is dangerously close to where I regularly come for work meetings :) Try the valhorna chocolate and you'll not be disappointed.

A bit pricy but I will say it is worth for money. Quality and fusion flavors of gelato. Always a good place to stop by and have a great gelato.

Saffron and choc chip gelato was beautiful! My friend ordered hazelnut, pistachio, and yoghurt and blueberry. All three of his flavours were just delightful, there are no wrong choices to be made here!

Gelateria Primavera is on spring street and squeezed in front of a grocer and next to the Bottle Shop restaurant with a wonderful view of Parliament House at night. This place is small, in fact, its so small that they only have 3 tables and only one of those tables can seat 3. So definitely be prepared to stand as you savour that gelato (besides, you burn more calories while standing which means you can probably have two!) as this isn’t a place where you can sit down for a nice little gossip session.

Best one so far for myself, their gelato tastes clean and smooth, not too sweet. I had chocolate with rosemary and some sorbet, they are just awesome. Also agree with other comment that this surely beats Messina and N2.

Delicious gelato!. I'm lactose intolerant and was happy to find they have a number of dairy free options at primavera. I tried a classic fruit sorbetto and an almond blueberry gelato which was just to die for - so full of flavour, absolutely delicious. I'll be back to try the other flavours!

Awesome, just pure awesomeness. Honestly, best gelato i had in Melbourne, with possibly the only exception of the now-closed Pidapipo. They have great selection of flavours and some rotating specials. I had the salted caramel with chilli, plain salted caramel, dairy free chocolate orange, coconut, hazelnut and pistachio. And let me just say that every one of those flavours knocked my socks off. Flavours were strong but balanced. The texture is just perfect. So luscious, so pliable, almost like cookie dough. Sure beats "gelato" from N2 or Messina.
