We visited for post work farewell drinks for a departing colleague on the eve of the latest lockdown, if I knew we were going to be extended with even harsher rules we probably would have had a bigger night!
This was the first time I’ve been here without having an actual meal but I tucked into the yummy chips whilst the boys enjoyed the beers. It really is a lovely old charming South Melbourne pub

We returned to the Golden gate for dinner ordering the same dishes again, as you can see from the photos whilst the crockery might change the consistency of plating is identical and the quality and value for money is unaltered. I definitely recommend a visit

Back at the GG for dinner as it’s certainly fantastic value for money. We've actually never walked out of here for $20 when we came in with the intention of eating the $10 steaks as we'll get the calamari and maybe a salad to share too but I always find it to be good pub grub and in fact the dining room section is actually quite fancy (and the sticky date is amazing too).
Updated review
Having frequented the Golden Gate on many an occasion for their $10 steaks I think the quality actually surpasses most of what you get at various steak nights around Richmond which are usually more the $14 mark. And they offering this all day every day. The chips are pretty good too and the blue cheese sauce I opt for is lovely. They even had live music last night which was awesome
Original review
Tonight I opted for a cheesy pizza and a Parma which were your typical pub classics, tasty and familiar. Quite loud and busy on a Friday night but you'll forgive them given they are running a pretty decent happy hour.
This is a great pub for an after work drink, or an early afternoon stop on a sunny day. Even though there is plenty of room inside, I enjoy sitting outside under the big market umbrellas and soaking up the atmosphere. Located on a busy corner, this place gets really busy, and you can tell it's a favourite with locals.
The food menu is standard pub fare of steaks, burgers and parmas; but we just come for the drinks and relaxed atmosphere. I've always found the service to be outstanding, the crowd friendly and the bar has a good wine selection. The Golden Gate Hotel is popular for good reason, and definitely a fun venue to hang out with friends at.
This is nice local pub. They have a good range of craft beers and this place was full of locals just enjoying the night.
It’s a relaxed pub, with lots of different places to sit on some old school retro chairs. I tried a pint of “The Gate Lager” which I assume was a home brew and it was really good. In fact it was a bit too easy drinking hahaha
This pub is definitely a place that I’d go back to.
Went for the $10 steak on a Sunday night. Can’t go wrong. Got a good piece. Felt a little hungry still after I finished but for $10 If you are in the area, pop in and you will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Beer battered chips would be better!
They have live music when we went so nice ambience.

I grabbed a glass of sparkling from here on a bustling Friday night while I waited for others to arrive for dinner somewhere else. The crowd was vibrant and the live music was great, I loved the happy hour prices, I don’t mind how long I have to wait for everyone else to turn up.

One of the best Sunday’s roast!!
I’ve just been here Sundays , but the food is amazing, especially the roast!!
The wait staff are friendly!!
If on a Sunday you are in South melbourne you have come and try the roast!!
The $10 steak special is hands down one of the best value deals going around this side of Melbourne. I've been going back for years. The quality isn't amazing, but for the price is very good. Keep it up guys!
What a great pub! I have dined in the bar area and restaurant a couple of times and always enjoyed the food, friendly service and atmosphere. Recently attended a function upstairs and was very impressed with the room and the food. Highly recommend this South Melbourne gem!
It’s a cool mid week mid January evening at the Golden Gate where the food is good at a good price, the staff are welcoming and the vibe is relaxed. A table on the street to watch the variety of folks and the odd tram go by and it reminds me why I love and support the local Aussie pub. A microcosm for the fortunate part in the world we enjoy.
Good deal on their $10 steak- the cut of meat itself is quite chewy but at least the chef cooks it in the best way possible to make it palatable. Chips and greens were good too. Always had good service here and excellent happy hour.
Hard to rate this one really, especially the $10 steaks. They’re basically the cheapest steak money can buy at a restaurant, but you do get what you pay for. It’s basically steak flavoured chewing gum, & you’ll get jaw doms the next day.
In saying that, the price does make it a viable option if you’re just in it for the nutrition:price ratio
Had the parma here and it was delicious. Cheap price and its bound to get you full. Staff here were super friendly as well. Will be back to try more items on the menu.
We had a really lovely group dinner at Golden Gate last night- they accommodated 15 of us very comfortably, and the food was speedy and delicious! A very reasonably priced menu with something to please everybody. Lovely service from very pleasant staff and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Will be sure to return more often!
A great pub for a quick lunch and is family friendly. The grazing platter was a standout for me and Miss 9 loves the lamb ribs. Comfy dining area and seems consistently busy. Give it a go!
Great deal on their $10 steak. Great chips and salad for sides, steak was good for its price. A good place to enjoy the night with beer and footy.
It seems there's been hardly any reviews recently at this place and not sure why...
My friend and I came here on a Wednesday night for a catch up dinner.
I had the Parma and she had the beef burger.
We both loved our meals and did our best to finish them. Superb hot chips!
They also had a trivia night on that seemed very interactive - not too loud that the rest of couldn't enjoy conversation though.
I have noticed some of the poor reviews from a couple of years ago are due to lack of vegetarian/gluten free options - can confirm they definitely have plenty of options on the menu now.
Would recommend and go back.
Great steak deal for $10 bucks always hits the spot after gym. Generous serves for their wedges, sweet potato chips and beer battered onion rings. Quick and efficient service with a great street dinning space on the corner.
One thing that stands out from this pub is their $10 steak. it is also my main reason of keep coming back to this place. The steak itself was actually just okay but the chips were amazing. Combine those with $10 price tag, and I will keep coming back.
I typically abhor pub food as find it unsophisticated and unclean but that’s not to say I’ve had some solid pub eating over the years. Naturally as a drinking spot, you inevitably need some food carbs to go down from time-to-time. In the midst of a recent work drinks evening, I opted to try the halloumi sliders snack dish at the Golden Gate Hotel. It’s just a skip away from the office and notorious for it’s questionable ten dollar steaks, which are available any time, any day. That’s pretty much lives up to what you expect from a $10 steak meal, although the fries can be stingy sized.
Nothing like a good bit of pub grub and we are all big fans of a good steak night and parma night but at the Golden Gate EVERY night is steak night with $10 steaks everyday… but how good can a $10 steak really be?. The Golden Gate has been there forever, there have been a few changes here and there but ultimately it’s an easy place to be, great to sit outside in the summer and not a bad place to grab a plate of something you fancy. The menu will cover off most tastes with parmas, burgers, fish and chips, steak, pizza, nibbles and pie.
I love this place, good food and not too expenssive, happy hour every sunday 5$ / pint very good for enjoy the sun outdoor with friends. My favorite place in south melbourne.
We came in with a group of people last Saturday. Had some lovely food and delicious cocktails for only $10 each! The girls behind the bar were very friendly, great service. We'll be back!
$10 steak everyday anytime.. How good is that? Been wanting to try as it was recommended on HeraldSun. Loved their chips and steak was also coked beautifully. Friendly service too..a great pub for cheap meal and drinks w friends.
Good pub fare ,good location not far from the CBD and a number of good restaurants. Great happy hour prices and cheap steak night. Good range of beers on tap as well as wines to choose from. Pre dinner drink or casual pub dinner good value.
Great service, food came out relatively quickly for a pub and was hot, fresh and delicious. We had the parma and calamari salad. Both generous servings, visually pleasing and delicious needlesstosay. Will definately recomment and will definatelt come again!
$10 port house steak everyday. Nice vibe inside good place to hangout having a drink with mates watching footy or chat. Tasty pizza and staff are helpful.
Parmasofmelbourne. Monday night had arrived so it was time to scout a parma to review. We thought this week we would head down to The Golden Gate Hotel. Arriving we weren’t able to take a seat in the dining room as it was full so off we went into the bar and claimed the last table.
Service was quite quick. The parmas were dished out in about 15 minutes.
We were impressed when we first layed eyes on them.
Any who, we dug in. The breast was your top quality stuff. Fresh, thick and juicy just how it should be.
The crumbing was ace. The breast was cooked perfectly which complemented the crumbs as it gave them the perfect crunch.
The napoli was a triumph. Had quite a dark colour but jeez it was incredible. Home made , rich and tasty.
Now the golden gate don’t use typical ham. Instead they use prosciutto. 1 of us didn’t mind it, but the rest weren’t a fan. It boils down to whether you like the extra salty flavour on your schnitzel. Majority thought it didn’t work to well with the napoli and cheese. Far to salty for our liking but hey, points for trying to be different i guess.
Again, it is quite unusual for a pub to only use cheddar as the cheese. I must say we were quite worried but the golden gate pulled it off fantastically. The flavour just fit in and worked perfectly with the napoli.
From recent reviews and pictures we had seen the golden gate uses thin cut fries. The joy we felt when we saw thick beer battered chips on the plate was out of this world. The golden gate had made the change and it was definitely for the better. I am not lying when i say they were some of the best chips we have had. Thick , crunchy and fluffy on the inside. All pubs should take a page from their book because this is exactly how chips should be cut and cooked.
The salad did its job. Mixed garden salad, dressed well.
Overall the golden gate knows how to dish out a bloody good parma. We didn’t think the prosciutto worked entirely well with the parma but each to their own. If your not a fan of prosciutto, definitely order it without. That being said, we recommend everyone to give the Golden Gate a gander. Good service and most important of all, a ripper parma.
8/10
Best of the best in south Melbourne!. Awesome staff great food and the happy hour is unbelievable! Great place will definitely be back!
Went today for lunch with my sisters and it was beautiful! The $10 steaks were such good value for the price, chips were beautiful and steaks were cooked to perfection! Will be returning for sure

Still being thirsty, we ventured to the Golden Gate Hotel which proved to be quite the find. They were advertising a steak lunch special for $14 and when it was brought out to some other guests, I was shocked at how good it looked. The table that received the dead cow expressed their joy also. Pints of Kosciuszko Pale Ale flowed and my thirst was abated. I am looking forward to visiting this watering hole again and trying the steak and of course also ensuring that the Kosciuszko Pale Ale remains of the highest quality coming out of the tap. I am not sure why only 66% of the punters that wrote a review of this place on Urbanspoon like it. It is a pleasant place that is good value for money.

Finally we journeyed to Golden Gate & Dutchess pop up bar for a final cocktail and more cuisine. Brought to market goers by two of Melbourne's sublime watering holes, the Golden Gate Hotel and city hotspot Dutchess have joined forces to serve a selection of classic and bespoke beverages from their pop up bar. Their menu will surprise and delight the thirstiest of market goers.
The Golden Gate really kicked it. Very good food, very good service. It's in a lovely old hotel in South Melbourne, and has a certain charm that some hotels of that vintage develop. (Well, it does at night, when it was lovely - I haven't been there during the day.) We went there with a Scoopon - I suspect these people prefer most people who buy these things to us, as we don't drink, so we tend to get mostly food, along with a LLB at times. (Well, Cha's taken to trying the cocktails if they are included…) However, the GGH was another when they couldn't have cared that we were there with a Scoopon - "Just present it when you settle up" was the reaction when we produced it at the start of the evening. Always a good sign. We started with the Antipasto; selection of cured meats, seafood, pickles and bread Really nice - I'm a big bread snob, and the bread was great. (How can one be a bread snob, you ask? Good question, I suspect…)
...this week, coming fresh of a fun long weekend and really hating having to go back to work, I bit the bullet and queued up one of the remaining ODPC pubs – The Golden Gate Hotel....We placed our orders and waited for the parmas to arrive – which they did, about 25 minutes afterward …The schnitzel? Fantastic. Almost impossible to fault. It was massive, the crumbs were crispy and carried an amazing crunch and the chicken breast was pure white – one of the whitest chicken breasts I think I’ve ever seen. It was thick, unbelievably juicy and steaming hot when served – and remained that way the entire meal.
When in need of a good feed and a beer you can pop in here! Ok less of the poetry, more of the food! The bar is spacious and there are some good tunes pumping as we get comfy in one of the many areas to sit. The menu is good, varied choices across tapas, sharing plates, pizzas and some great sounding mains. The food is coming out of the kitchen and the burger looks really good, as do the parmas. We opt for 3 tapas sharing plates for $18 and a pizza to share. The zucchini & mint arancini balls with blue cheese aioli are yummy, big crispy balls packed full of light, not stodgy rice with a fresh and lovely filling. The salt and pepper calamari with lemon mayo are very lightly dusted and cooked through so they are soft and delish! But the absolute standout is the braised beef and chilli croquettes with capsicum aioli - amazing! The beef is super succulent and flakey, packed into a little breadcrumbed sausage. There is a great heat from the chilli and the capsicum aioli, it is gorgeous! Yum
$10 Steaks!. Saw the $10 steak sign at the front and asked the waitress if it would be honoured (it was a weekend) and she said yes. For $10 I was expecting a small piece of steak and hardly any sides but it was actually great value for money - plenty of rocket salad and some seasoned chips to accompany the steak. The steak was quite large and I would say is even better sized than paying full priced at other restaurants/pubs. Only downside was that it was leaning on the rare side (asked for medium rare) but that didn't deter me from polishing it off.
Good food and excellent service. We had lunch here today and love the selection for starters/small plates. We had the trio of dips, lamb cutlets and salmon fishcakes. Service was fast. food excellent and 5 stars for the service. The waiter/barman was very friendly and efficient. He took the orders, served the food and made the drinks.
A favourite. I love this place. It's my after-work local, with $10 steak all day everyday and amazing drink specials and a kitchen open earlier than most. Chilled bar staff. Great atmosphere. How can you go wrong?
You get what you pay for with the $10 steak. There aren't may bargains in Australia when it comes to restaurant food, but the Golden Gate has one. Their house steak and chips is $10, all day, every day. OK, it's not a Vlado's steak. The quality of the meat is like what you'd get at an office's annual summer picnic where the boss is a tightarse. The only steak that I can remember that had a higher proportion of "gristle to edible" was at one of those Argentine restos that are everywhere in Amsterdam, Holland. I'm not whingeing, though, because I didn't expect much for that price. And it was nicely cooked. The steak had good grill char, was done medium well as I ordered (which is hard to achieve with a thin piece of meat) and was topped with some tasty peppercorn gravy. The chips were not bounteous, but nor was the quantity skimpy. Even though the salad was 95% rocket (the ditchweed of lettuce) it provided a healthy balance to the plate. It might sound like I'm slagging the steak, but I don't mean to be entirely negative. For $10, it's not bad. If it was $20, THEN I'd be fuming.
Bonus is when you rock up for their happy hour between 4 and 6 p.m. when all drinks are $5. OK, so it's a SCHOONER of draught beer at that price, not a pint.( A $5 pint would be an American price.) But at least it's not a sleeve, or a pot, or a middie -- all those confusing bits of beer glass lexicon that vary from state to state down here. I don't skol the turps too often at restos in Oz becoz booze costs so bloody much. I've almost given up on beer down here. Since the Golden Gate is a short tram ride from where I live, and because I have a fondness for the name after having lived in San Francisco for a few years, I might be able to do some serious damage to my liver at this place!
Fantastic. Had a function here for my boyfriend's birthday a few months ago. We had the whole dining room to ourselves which was nice, and the staff were attentive and helpful, but didn't crowd us. The food was great, and came out quickly. A lovely night.
Golden atmosphere. Great place to sit outside and people watch on Clarendon St on a nice day. Service is friendly but pub meals are average and not spectacular. They do have some good specials for pizza during the weekdays if you've got cravings for lunchtime pizza!
We often pop I. On a Saturday for the $5 drinks from 4pm-6pm followed by the Rump Steak with Fries & salad for $10. What a treat the steak is outstanding value & the service has never faulted. It was my husbands birthday the Sat just gone & he was treated to a free desert complete with candle & a happy birthday song from the lovely staff. We can not speak higher of friendly, down to earth & willingness in providing a enjoyable customer experience & the excellent value of the steak. Highly recommend.
Rustic Pub Food!. When its cold outside.. get your self into gear and check out the Golden Gate Hotel! Its cozy and warm and great for a catch up with a friend! Just good honest pub grub!
Steak, Burgers, Fish and Chips mmmmm I have supplied some photos for your perusal enjoy guys! ;)
Came for dinner tonight, staff were so lovely! Had a chat with both staff members on, one interesting international guy and a helpful young girl.. The waitress readily made recommendations and I was definitely not disappointed! I had the burger and my friend had the pork belly.. Both meals were spectacular. Ate in te dining room and then moved to the bar for drinks afterwards, great atmosphere an love the two different areas to suit the mood you're in. Definitely be back for dinner again soon!
Really enjoyed the food. Went there for dinner with my husband and father in law on one of those Living Social coupons.
The share entree was great, those mussles are to die for! Although I'm sure they aren't great for my waistline!
the mains were also fantastic.
Not a huge menu, but they seemed to do everything well and we all left full. The staff were really friendly and helpful.
The only odd thing was that the restaurant cleared out by 8pm, strange because we arrived at 7.30 and it was packed.
Will definitely be going back there.
Ok, but trying too hard. The service was excellent.
The food was ok, but I felt they were trying too hard. the dining room atmostphere was great, but the bread was frozen cold in the middle and the mash lumpy. we went there with a voucher, but wouldn't return, too many great places in melb. also considering the refurb for the bar, felt really half done, with cracks still in the floor and the seating wasn't arranged to bring in groups. could do a lot with this place if they tweek a few minor things such as seating layout and menu.
Pork Belly nom nom nom!. Our little party of four dined here using two $39 Scoopon vouchers on a Friday night- the vouchers gave us a comfortable $200 between us to spend on food and drink... very enjoyable! The shared entree platter was acceptable, but nothing amazing. You could choose five out of about eight different tastes. Nothing stood out. If I was to go again I would choose one of the more alacarte entrees that were on the second page of the menu. The mains were absolutely scrumptious! My partner and I relished our pork belly (crispy crackle on top!) served with a herbed mashed potato and an apple slaw (with mustard seeds, a winnng combo). Our friends enjoyed slow roasted lamb shoulder and a rump steak. The chocolate fondant for dessert topped the meal off.
Staff were lovely also. Would go back even without the voucher!
Thanks Scoopon. $40 voucher for $100 worth of food and drink. Renovations look great. Really nice bar with really nice food and service
Pleasantly surprised. Went here for a birthday lunch.
Was surprised at the great standard of meals, the barramundi specials being the highlight.
We had purchased a coupon to dine here for $40 for 2 ppl up to the value of $100. The deal was too good to pass up so we gave it a go. The website explains the hotel had recently had a face lift, upon arriving we were surprised it was actually quite lovely and the dining area was quite posh for a hotel type venue. The atmosphere was warm and rather romantic with candle lit tables and dimmed lights. Our waiter was nice and explained the menu to us but also told us the rib eye steak had run out (a little disappointed). We dined as a group of 4 and started with oysters, pork belly, and scallops. For main we had the pork schnitzel, duck confit, and 2 lamb dishes with side green veg with proscuitto. We were all very pleased with our dishes and couldn't believe we had all that food for $20 per head with the coupon. At the end we had a bit of $ left and shared a dessert amongst the 4 of us but by then we were all very full. Thoroughly enjoyed our night!
Good night?. Based on the comments you'd think the place was rubbish, but I quite liked it. My salmon was very well cooked and the beans and mash nice as well. Prices made reasonable with the entertainment book - otherwise probably a bit high. Good gastro-pub
Dinner 23/06/22
Food was pretty good pub food, the salad dressing worked really well but during winter would be good if they offered a vegetable only option. The pepper sauce with the schnitzel was basically brown water no flavour and far too thin consistency.
The staff were so lovely one of the guys behind the bar that served us was incredibly polite and worked his arse off.
Only thing I would say they had a live band on which was great but the bloke on the saxophone needs to learn how to regulate his volume, we were as far away as you could be and be inside and it was deafening and 3 times the volume of the rest of the band!
We had my husband‘s 50th birthday here. They have a fabulous room upstairs which is for hire and the prices were really excellent the room has a vibe cool feel to it and our guests thoroughly enjoyed the evening. This is one of our local pub so we often go here for a beer, the food is good pub fare so pleased that it’s reopened it’s got a good street vibe it’s just a lovely building it’s always fun.
Hubby wanted pub meal after eating almost three weeks of Chinese food in Brisbane, so we decided to venture out to a nearby pub for a feed.
Maybe I am scarred by all the cheap pub food I have when I was younger, but while @goldengatehotel wasn’t out of this world, the food was actually quite good. We started with a light and crispy calamari with a beautiful yuzu and chilli mayo (when I get my @mountainyuzu I am totes gonna make some mayo!), then I chose a healthier option of Apple, smoked almond and grain salad. The salad is very fresh, although I couldn’t really taste the smokiness in the almond.
Hubby had a burger - a dirty burger (that’s the official name!). He loved it. I think he was really craving for some greasy fattiness of bacon 🥓 beef patty bacon 🥓 and beef patty and melted cheese with the onion rings on top. I had to force him to order the side salad otherwise this might be a heart attack waiting to happen. Hubby wasn’t overly impressed by the fries though, some were overcooked so it was on the too crispy side.
Hangry Piglet wanted to try the kids meal gnocchi and both of us hesitated… gnocchi can be very stodgey if not cooked well, but he was sure he wanted it. Turns out, that’s probably the best dish, we all loved the flavour and texture!
Hangry Dumpling’s kids chicken and chips meal was sadly the most disappointing. The chicken was very dry and the fries, like hubby’s one is on the overcooked side. He is usually a big eater and he only ate half of it.
Overall we do like the food and will be back as our neighbourhood go to, but either way after trying this pub I am more open to going to other pubs
Celebrated here with my friends for my birthday, The staff were very accommodating and we had a lovely table for the night perfectly suited to our booking 💫
Food is generous, and the blue haired waitress deserves a raise!
Had one friend in literal tears over the parma being the best one he's ever eaten.
I think he has not recovered from parma withdrawal
Anywho, definitely a good place for a feed 👍
This pub was fantastic. Went here on a quiet Tuesday night, and everything was perfect. The staff were lovely. The drinks were good. The food was so much better than standard pub fare. Had one of the best steaks of my life, served with a very generous portion of chips and a tasty side lettuce thing. The halloumi starter was also delicious!
My Friend and I had a joint 21st party here recently and were shocked at how easy it was to organise events with! We had never done anything like this before and the management staff were super helpful with their suggestions and running of the night. We were able to just get drunk and enjoy the night while letting them run it which was just great. Would highly recommend to people looking for a venue for an event in this great location.
Get the haloumi. It's the best I've ever had. Came with little watermelon squares and nuts. Also fried on this crunchy batter.
Steaks are cooked as requested and the Parma is huge.
Dessert selection is all but one... Sticky date pudding, but it's delicious.
Espresso Martini also highly recommended
