đ±Lizzieâs first impression: came back recently after not having thought about this place for a few years - nothing has changed and their food is still so on point.
đ©Lizzie enjoyed: big boys are known for their ribs and American sandwiches. They are delicious and everything you need in a burger. I loved the pork ribs - itâs cooked so well and juicy and tender.
đ
Lizzie did not enjoy: it is quite oily so make sure you order a side of slaw and a bottle of soda.
đ„Lizzie rates overall: this place is actually very underrated - definitely check it out if youâre feeling a feast!
Fantastic smoked meats! Ribs and wings were simply amazing. Their unsung hero is the string onion rings. No idea what were the exact ingredients in there. They were simply addictive. Each piece of onion rings was crunchy and munchie, a umami bomb bursting in my mouth.

The only American bbq shop we have tried in melbourne and it was delicious! We went there with my friend and we shared the food. The ribs was amazing! The portion is good with reasonable price.
I've been to the Caulfield store and loved it so when I stumbled across the CBD store I was intruiged. I didn't want to stuff my face for lunch so i just had the brisket burger. It was pretty darn delicious.
The store its unassuming and not gimmicky despite the name. It's actually too good for touristy Hardware lane.
I didn't get the full big boy bbq experience on this occasion but it still remains one of my fave American joints in Melbourne. Tasty sticky ribs, beautiful brisket, all of the sides!
Whether you want a sandwich that won't burst your belt, or you want to test your stretchy pants for dinner, Big Boy BBQ will cater.
Walking along hardware lane, there are many choices but we thought we would try out Big Boy BBQ! We were happy with our choice...
The âZeeâ man sandwich - a slice of beef brisket coupled with smoked cheese, fried onion strings and barbecue sauce! Why havenât I been to this place sooner? It was literally like a burger but a more loaded one! Beef brisket was so tender and juicy and the addition of the fried onion strings just did it for me!
Chicken wings and fried onion strings - wings were barbecued beautifully with a tinge of charred taste giving it that extra flavor! Gotta say it was finger licking good. Fried onion strings was a good side to have whilst feasting on the wings.
We would love to visit Big Boy BBQ again to try the rest of their sandwiches! đ
I always order the New Yorker on Rye whenever I feel like a nice delicious sandwich đ„Ș while wandering around the city.
My husband enjoys their burgers đ
Great place for a delicious meal.
I love American style BBQ so much. The food here is excellent. I always come here when I'm feeling homesick. It's also really difficult to find pastrami sandwiches in Melbourne.
It's a little pricey and it's not the greatest place to sit and eat, but the food is on point and that's what's important.

The original and the best. Big Boys pioneered the BBQ scene in Australia way back when in their original Elsternwick store and many have since followed. Have travelled far and wide for their delightful BBQ fare in my time and would again.
First time trying American style Barbecued meats. I ordered "Zee Man" roll for take away. It is basically a sesame seed buns filled with barbecued beef brisket sliced thins to be sandwiched between the buns with fried onions and smokey sauce. Tasted nice as it was smoky, tangy and roasty at the same time. The meat was also tender enough. Chips were on point, crispy and well seasoned.
Nice American bbq shop in cod. Good portion and not expensive. The chicken wings are very nice and the pork ribs also good. Good place for meat brunch lol
Delicious! I chose the Aussie chicken and my boyfriend got the Carolina, both were perfect. The spicy BBQ sauce was so good with the chips as well!! I just wish they had some type of iced sweet tea or lemonade to really make this a bbq feast!
Best pulled porl burger I've ever had. The spice of the sauce and the slaw itself never took away the flavour of the pork with the right anount of spice. Oh and the chips were cooked perfectly with enough flavour
Good was great, tasty and fresh. I had the Zeeman, which was juicy and full of flavour. Service was quick and friendly. Happy to go back to try more from the menu!
Ordered the "Little Girl" and the Mac and cheese balls for two. Four Mac and cheese balls arrived followed by the platter, ribs were pretty good but just a little bit on the dry side. The others were great! Great place to share and value for money.
Prepare to get your hands dirty.
American BBQ is a cuisine that seems simple on the outside, but actually has many different styles and techniques to it. Big Boy BBQ is said to have been one of the first restaurants to introduce American BBQ to Melbourne using "low and slow" cooking methods by smoking the meats over hickory wood.
The ribs were tender and the marinade was perfect - not too spicy, not too bland. The coleslaw and onion fries were addictive. The chicken wings were substantial.
Came here on a Thursday night and to our surprise the place was not empty. There were another two tables occupied when we arrived while the rest were available.
We browsed through the menu and decided that the 'Ribs n Wings' option would works best for us. We ordered the pork saucy ribs with chicken wings, chips, and onion strings are sides.
The wait was about 10-12 minutes before a hude dish of food was brought to our table. We tried the chips first which were great, light, crunchy, well-seasoned. The onion strings were tasty as well and not oily at all.
The chicken wings were delicious. The meat was smoky, slightly charred, and well marinated. The ribs were only okay though as the meat was not as tender as we would have liked. Nevertheless, the taste was there and the portion was generous. We love the sauce provided on the table - slightly sweet, smoky, and complex which greatly enhanced the taste of our food.
Service was fast and polite. 3.5/5!
Seriously brisket business here. The best smokehouse east of the Carolinas that is matched by their Dorothy's sauce which they should franchise. I would recommend it in the gulf before 2020
After a sweet treat meal for afternoon tea, you know it only makes sense to hit one of my favourite savoury cravings: Triple B [Big Boy BBQ]. This is Americano style BBQ in a chain type, diner style staple of the Hardware Lane cafe society. While rstos around the area tend to more European food styles Trible B is just so damn brash.
From when you walk in and see the full entire rolls of paper towel paired with 6 types of different sauces, things will become messy. Choose from burgers and buns or more Meat and Three style platters of increasing levels of Smokey Obscenity.
If you like this type of food served up with no pretentions this is the place. Come here, order your faves, another with sauce and chow right down. The BBQ gods demand it.
Price point here is amazing and the ribs fall off the bone. Can be cooked various ways and the sides are fries with white bread. No frills and no fuss but great taste
I was pretty impressed with the food.
I went with a group and ordered one of the meat platters. The brisket was a little bit on the bland side, but the ribs were amazing! As were the smoky cheesy chips and the mac and cheese.
If you're look for some solid American BBQ food, try it out.
Came here just a few weeks back, haven't been here in a long time. Always enjoy the food here. We got the fancy sandwich (can't remember the name) with a Dr. Pepper, can't get any better than that!
Omg yum! Good value American BBQ. Onion strings are great and the mac n cheese special was delicious. BYO alcohol is a great option! And save room for the chocolate peanut butter pie. Yum
This place is great for some hearty comfort food in the city. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is nice and organised. The food is tasty and of good quality.
We ordered a selection of meats, chicken wings, sides and a burger and must say i was pretty impressed with them all. The highlight was the smoked pulled pork, which had a spicey bbq flavour and was very tender and juicy.
Tasty pork sandwich. Good wings too.
Pros:
+Nice soft bun
+Interesting flavour combination (sweet sauce, vinegary coleslaw and spicy pork)
+Generous meat portion
Cons:
-Slightly messy to eat
Loved it! I love American BBQ and this didn't disappoint! We got a platter big girl I think and it was huge! Absolutely sooo happy when I saw its served with slice bread (my secret wish for all BBQ places!)! The meats were so lovely and all tasted quite different. The ribs had a nice chilli kick and the potato salad a great accompaniment
Give it a go :)
Thanks for the great meal which actually tasted like. Described on the menu. Not many places can get their meat so close to the American style BBQ as your staff have done. Well done!!!
Nice BBQ restaurant, the portions were really really generous. Normally, two girlfrends and me can not eat up a set for 2 to 3 serves. Sauce was a bit salty for my tasted but still good.
Great US style food. I played safe with the Aussie Chicken but still loaded with saucy goodness. Heaps of salad (with beetroot) & mayo. Link in bio for video.
Came here for the second time, this time busier. They do have many people working but some services seems to be BYO (pick up your own cups, plate, sauce, tissue). First time it was better services, maybe because too busy this time. They have good items in terms of plastic cups, variety of sauce etc I will pass them overall for service. Meal, it is a bit more expensive than some places I have been such as ribs and burgers but then again cheaper than many in CBD so also passes the price part. The lamb ribs is quiet nice chicken is nice as well but too much sauce, maybe people like to add their own sauce?Going for the deal will not significantly save your money but it will make it a bit cheaper. It is OK to go here if you want ribs and only in CBD. If you have bigger budget or willing to go outer suburbs then reconsider coming here. Overall, good experience.
Co-worker suggested to eat here after work and I got to say. It ain't so bad to try out will definitely need to try out the big boy platter soon though! đ
Went to Big Boy BBQ in the Melbourne CDB recently and was thoroughly looking forward to this occasion. I can honestly say that the place did not disappoint.
I was with a group of friends so we ordered the âBig Boyâ claimed to feed 1-6 people. I would love to see one person finish this and then try to standup. This is the Mt Fuji of meat; beef brisket, pastrami, pulled pork, lamb ribs, pork ribs and chicken wings along with 3 jumbo sides of your choice. We had chips, onion strings and a salad, and then we sneaked in another side of mac ân cheese.
Out of all the meats in this meat mountain I loved the pulled pork and chicken wings. The pulled pork just melted in your mouth and the taste was divine, not overly sweet from the hickory BBQ sauce nor too salty it was how Goldilocks likes itâŠ.. just right.
Now for what I thought was the âpiece de resistanceâ, the chicken wings. OMG! OMG! OMG! Get in ma belly! These were amaze-balls, coated in some special sauce that for all I know is unicorn poop, but whatever, Iâll eat it! The chicken was cooked to perfection and I literally couldnât get enough, literally. I turned to get another chicken wing only to see my colleagues all chowing down on one.
The ribs both pork and lamb were a little dry but that could just been on the day, it was Friday and the crazy lunchtime rush. Kind of felt good to get all Neanderthal on a rib bone, the only thing missing was my Neanderthal grunts of enjoyment. But there I was using my hands and teeth to get every small morsel I could.
The sides were great, chips nice, salad wasâŠ. Well⊠a salad and was used more as a palate cleanser between mouthfuls of meat. The onion strings are awesome, resembling white bait but just as freakinâ tasty. Get these as one of your sides you wonât regret it.
Big Boy BBQ also has a great array of drinks, I went the Root beer because I love Snoopy and I havenât had a good Sarsaparilla in ages.
Overall this place is awesome for sating the biggest meat craving. A little pricey for dining by yourself but if you get a group of friends together then hit this place and order one of the platters, thereâll be more than enough food to go around. If you donât visit this place at least once in your lifetime, SHAME! *DING* *DING* SHAME!
Greeted by friendly staff. Super quick service. Delicious ribs every thing cooked perfectly. Would recommend to friends. Don't eat at Third Wave come here.
This is could be one of the best barbecue place I have ever encountered. The reason is that, they have "Lamb" ribs barbecue (honestly, it's my first time). If you are a lamb lover, you would love this dish. They have two sauces one is bit tangy and the other one a bit sweet. I recommend to get the onion strings for side. Its too bad, that this my last day in Melbourne, I would come here everyday just for the lamb ribs.
Great burgers, Zee Man and Pulled Chicken Burger!
Amazing fries!
Highly recomend!

Had the Dorothy, chips and the peanut butter pie - absolutely delicious! I found the burger to be really tasty and they didn't skimp on the meat, which added to the sense of value. The bun tended to get a bit soggy towards the end, with the sauce and the coleslaw all seeping into it, but the chips were suitably crunchy to offset that. The cake was delectably creamy, peanut buttery and with a firm, chocolate base. As a PB fan, I loved it. Dinner for 3 people all with sides, drinks and two desserts came to under $80 too, which I thought was very well priced. Everyone else really enjoyed their burgers too, but one of my dining companions found the cake too rich (the richer the better, for me personally). I'll need to try the ribs next time!
I got the Carolina, and it was super tasty. I never line up for food (instant gratification guy) however I do here. The pulled pork was cooked to perfection, with a hint of spice. I'm still thinking about it!
Delicious pork ribs!! Worth the try! We got this for two and while it wasn't filling we were satisfied! Food was hot and tasted great. They have quite a variety of things you can choose from
For the price the 1/4 rack and 1 side was definitely worth it. The sauce is delicious and filling. The fact that the onion string were only a regular serving made me wonder how much the large was. Very impressed
The BBQ here is pretty good. Â A little on the sweeter side than other places but nothing out of the ordinary for southern BBQ. Â Ah Dorothy, sweet Dorothy, brisket, slaw and pickles. Sweet, smokey, vinegary balance. Â Beautiful burger today. Â
Sometimes if they are under the pump the consistency can vary but today it was great. Â When busy its certainly not the best time to order The Big Boy. Â Last time I went with friends we booked and told them specifically we were ordering it so they had forewarning.Â
Do be warned, you don't need to upgrade the sizes, the regular serves and platters are generally enough for people
My friend and I made the dangerous decision of getting both the little boy and a burger each because we hate ourselves and obviously wanted to destroy our bodies by the end of dinner. Anyway we did finish the platter but the burgers were only half eaten sadly and we learnt our lesson that when you go to Big Boy BBQ, the platter is enough.
So good though. The meats were great and not only that but the sides were amazing. I hate it when places only focus on the meat and forget that the sides are important aswell. Their potato salad is delicious. The additional sauces at every table are a really nice touch too for those who like to make things a little extra saucey.Â
All up a really good meal, just don't do what we did and get over excited and order too many things.
My favourite American BBQ place. If you're on you're own, try one of the sandwiches but if you have at least one other person with you - GO THE BIG BOY! The meats are fantastic and so are the sides, my favourites are the onion strings and chilli con carne. To top it off, they happen to have the best chips ever. Worthy of a death sentence last meal.
First time here with a bunch of 8 peeping toms..busy which is a good sign but lots of tables...staff were friendly and recommended the Zee Man burger as our first time...waitress was attentive and a das good...food, i loved it...some didnt - saying it was way too salty....onion rings are better here than "Ribs and Burgers" .Price is reasonable ..all up very good...i will be coming back...

Decided to come here for our anniversary dinner and my hubby and I had a great first experience! The ribs were moist, and super saucy...loved every bit of it. I wasn't really a fan of the chicken wings but my husband enjoyed them. I personally loved the pork ribs. Don't be afraid to get your fingers dirty to have the ultimate experience. Will definitely go back and try those lamb ribs.
Tried this place out as I was craving some pork ribs. It was pretty good, not the best. However the house salad and fries were pretty bomb. Great service and loved the dining environment!
Yum what a great late lunch ! Pastrami on rye with extra slaw. The salad had a lovely acidity and wasn't greasy, the amount of meat was sensational. I ended up sharing with a friend I bumped into and we were both full. Can't wait to try more.
I've never had American BBQ before but I'm now a fan. A stack of meat to chose from and the platter give you a taste of many of the selections. Not surprisingly the serving size is big and somewhat overwhelming!
When you need some meat you need Big Boy BBQ! Itâs like a BBQ fast food joint with bright lights, plastic tables, huge rolls of kitchen towel and bottles of BBQ sauces to pimp your brisket. The menu covers a myriad of all American classics, pastrami on rye, beef brisket, pulled pork, saucy pulled chicken, racks of ribs, onion rings, loaded fries and pickles. There are Meat Platters that cover all shapes, sizes and tastes and if you are a sharer then this is the way to go to make sure you get a taste of everything.
The food is pretty good, bbq meat was a little dry but decent enough to eat. Something to definitely make it a 4.0 not a 3.5 is the cheese fries and potato salad, they are both to die for.
Insanely huge cuts of meat. Definitely a place to bring your partner if they have a bottomless appetite! The meat so tender, awesome root beer too. Americana bbq at its best.

Got bored of asian restaurants, we decided to try this American bbq shop we walked past few times before. The waiters and waitresses were super friendly and helpful at explaining the menu. We had the ribs n wings combo which said feeds 1 to 2. You get to choose two sides, we decided to go bad all the way and chose the chips and shoestring fried onions. The sides were unexpectedly really delishhh! Super crispy served just at the right temperature. The barbecue sauce that came was also very good, I normally dislike the taste of smokey bbq sauce but this one is really good I actually enjoyed it.
To the main event, the ribs. We opted for the signature Kansas Style pork ribs..although there was nothing wrong with it I was not very fond of it because after few bites you started to feel overwhelmed by the sweetness..the wings were also very sweet and it would of been a better match if the chicken was rubbed in different sauce, perhaps something that tasted lighter and spicier, not smokey sweet like the ribs.
Servings were really generous. I could not imagine a person finishing the whole thing himself ha... Gave them 3.5 for the awesome sides and the super friendly service. Overall was exciting experience, unfortunately American bbq is just not our cup of tea..regardless I could definitely see why a lot of people keep coming here. They deliver the best of what they do. Xox
Had the Big Girl Platter recently with a couple of friends. The pulled meats were delicious and tender - not at all dry either which was a plus. I have to say that I was quite taken with the pulled chicken.
It didn't detract from the overall meal, but the meats were a little sweet for me because of the barbecue sauces and bastings used - this was very easily remedied however when I pulled aside one of the barbecue sauces laid out on the table. The vinegar sauce was a GREAT accompaniment and I highly recommend that you try it with your meats if you like tangy, zingy flavours.

This restaurant is located at Hardware Lane. Its an american style bbq restaurant. They served a very nice onion rings, bbq pork ribs and also chicken wings. They serve it uniquely and its not really expensive!
The food was very nice and they are quiet generous. We had the big boy and it fed a group of six ppl. The service was a bit so so...we booked a table for six plus a pram and when we got there the table had place for six, but no space for the pram (small venue). The excuse that we got however was that the person that took our booking doesn't have children and therefore didn't understand wat it entails?
Came in a group of 6 for dinner, the place is quite small and could get quite crowded. Reservation is advised. Ordered the Big Boy set and it was just nice for our group (not stuffed but enough to have space for dessert). The Kansas Ribs and Chicken Wings are good but the Pulled Pork and Lamb aren't that much. The meat were rather dry and bland sadly. Would suggest getting 2 full racks (or 3 in our case, since we are big eaters) instead. In love with the Cheese Chips since the Jalapeño Cheese taste very much like Nacho Cheese. Would come back solely for it! Been looking for a place that sells one to go with my movies!
Service wise staff weren't too friendly, affected our dining quite a bit but it's probably one of those rough days. All in all, we had a good meal :)
We totally walked into this by accident, my initial plan was to grab something quick and healthy while running some errands in the city... then I got hangry and Big Boy BBQ literally fell in front of me.Â
Definitely in two minds about this cos while I was eating the ribs and wings, it was awesome and I was in heaven, but I also wish I had that healthy salad. Not really. Maybe.Â
The flavours of the rub and marinade on the ribs and wings took me right back to 'Murica, the only thing I could flaw would be that the ribs maybe weren't tender and juicy enough to fall off the bone. But otherwise top notch.
Diet tomorrow. Or the day after.
This was a great option to hit up with my 2 bros after spending the day at the arnie expo.
We ending up getting the pulled meat burger and the little boy meal (which was still big) and splitting it between all 3 of us. The meat is cooked really well, it's tender and succulent, with a strong smoked bbq taste and with so many sauces to choose from, this is definitely a place to go for all bbq meat lovers. For the price, these large meat platters are great for big groups to share.
The ribs were great, the pulled meat was great, the fries were great and the onion rings were greater. One day I'll be a big enough boy to finish a big boy.
This place serves good bbq platter that was generous is portion yet at a affordable price. Many types of bbq sauce to choose from and the meat definitely came out fresh from a smoker as the evident pink ring is seen on the meat. Recommended for an authentic American Style bbq restaurant.
Iâve eaten hundreds of burgers in my time. I know what a burger needs to be to be classified as âgoodâ; a fresh bun and flavoursome fillings. Itâs as simple as that. It doesnât matter what the fillings are as long as theyâre easy to bite into and donât fall out. The âZeeâ Man is made up of sliced beef brisket, smoked cheese, fried onion strings and BBQ sauce. The bun is soft and the fillings are damn tasty. Easily one of my top five burgers of all time.
Excellent, friendly, knowledgable, fast service. Beautifully presented, generous and good-value food. Lively atmosphere and lots of lovely details show they really care about making this a great experience. Far too heavy on the salt for my taste, which takes a point off for me, but the cooking skills in the kitchen are first rate.
The Carolina pulled pork sandwich is delicious! The setting of the restaurant is very casual, but it's good for a quick Friday lunch with work mates. I also like how they put all the hot sauces on each table!
Located at the vibrant Hardware Lane
This small diner is pretty amazing. I can smell the awesomeness from outside and it already makes me hungry.
I gotta say those, small fries are beautiful.
Big Boy BBQ is a great BBQ place in the heart of Melb CBD, it is a bit pricy and the prices have gone up in the last 3 months or so but the food is second to none, as with all BBQ places lots of meat & cheese but it is all amazing.
It does have a liquor license if you want to wash the meat/burgers with a beer and does have a few different soft drinks that may be harder to find in Australia (A&W Root beer anyone).
I would recommend this place for a good quality meal.
The ribs on this place are pretty amazing, shared a little boy with my boyfriend quiet happy to say we were very full after ! Needs more sides to be honest but for a meat, meat and more meat person it's pretty awesome
Awesome place to pig out on meat, meat and more meat! Everything was so flavoursome. I would recommend for everyone who wants to binge out on meat.
Real taste of burger! Small and overpriced but taste worth it. Craving for more because American serve their food in huge portion. I will sure try more new burgers there
pork ribs needed serious sauce, bit dry. good for a group (you can book if 6 or more people). prices are up there but flavors all good. would come back and try sandwiches next time
