Review Great Space Cafe - Melbourne

Ken Sayers
I have been a regular here for the last 4 years. I get long black coffees so I can really taste a good coffee and the team at Great Space do a consistently good job. The staff are extremely friendly and will go that little bit extra for us regulars. I've had one of the staff come up and take my keep cup if these's a long queue so that they can make the coffee while I'm waiting. I was even allowed to stay and get my coffee when they ran a fire drill in the whole of the Great Space. Over the years I've seen staff come and go as many of them are on working holidays, but the vibe of the place has remained constantly friendly. I'm sure this is because Tina and Zac as the managers really look after their people.

The coffee is usually good, but they have messed up our food order a few times. Today, their special was coffee pancakes with grilled bananas and maple syrup. When they brought them to us, they had no banana nor maple syrup (they had icecream instead). We asked the waiter about it, and she checked with the kitchen, and returned to tell us that they were out of banana, and would we like strawberries and blueberries instead. I said yes, and they brought out a bowl with strawberries, blueberries, and banana. She said "oh, we had only one serve of banana left". A few minutes later, I looked up and noticed a bowl in the kitchen window... with two bananas in it. Not sure why they lied about the banana...

Place seems really bad. they just drop food and leave and you can keep shouting excuseme and they won't turn back. Saw it happening to 3 tables. prana chai was 4.4 on the menu but i was charged 5 and it was tasteless. I think they need to pre soak the leaves to bring out the flavour. Food , I ordered veggie sandwitch on a sourdough. Sourdough was not very convincing, pumpkin was not cooked properly. and oh man... i have a stomach pain now.... so i wanted to put the review in first and now i need to find a toilet....hope(not a good strategy but anyways) dosen't get too bad. Enjoy!!

Great food, great coffee (these people actually know how to make a cappuccino, with heaps of froth!) and excellent service by the manager and owners. Also environmentally aware and practice sustainability. Highly recommended!

Nice little cafe in Collins Place renowned for it’s great coffee, quick, and friendly service

Friendly staff, was not overly busy, but order was put through incorrectly and then didn’t arrive. I asked the servers for assistance but they were slow in coming back to me. After second attempt to ask, I was told my order was being put through new. No apology, 45 minute wait, no food. I told them not to bother and left. Plenty of other choices in same area.

As someone mentioned below - their coffee was ok but the food is awful. I got their coffee plus raisin toast deal for $8. The coffee wasn’t too bad, but the raisin toast was barely edible - I ended up throwing it out.

Clueless - I asked for a Fruit Mince Tart (which I could clearly see in the display), and was told they had no such thing. When I pointed to what I wanted, was told it was a Chocolate Tart ... So I ordered it. Imagine my surprise when it was in fact a Fruit Mince tart, with no sign of chocolate ! They also overheated the milk in the coffee which resulted in that burnt milk taste.

Got the matcha latte and it was very bland, and can taste more the milk flavour than the matcha. Also got the ham and cheese toastie but it was very soggy and oily. Felt so bad after eating it for breakfast that I didn't even need lunch...

3.5<br/>Always willing to give a place a another chance I called back in to Great Space Cafe for coffee and a quick toast breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of coffee over my experience 7 months ago and the toast and jam was made with a really good sourdough. The lady behind the counter was super friendly too which makes a difference. Located between train and work I could see this place being a regular visit. <br/><br/>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br/><br/>Previous review<br/>So today’s strong almond milk latte was requested at Great Space Café in Collins Place. My coffee was creamy with a smooth palate, not overly strong but enough to be able to just taste the coffee.

I ordered the bacon n egg roll with a yummy relish which I appreciated was made to order but probably not something to order if you're in a hurry as it took a while. My accompanying skinny flat white was nice. The lot was $10, although very annoyingly, they charge a surcharge for eftpos. Also, you have to queue awkwardly around tables to order as there is only one order point if you want to sit in (order and pay at the counter and they bring your items out to you). Be aware that there are two large specials boards - one near the entrance but also near the kitchen, which is where I spotted the bacon n egg and coffee $10 deal.

They have a good selection of muffins, cakes, protein balls at the front, their breakfast is excellent (Poached eggs on toast, avocado, spinach, haloumi cheese, mushrooms etc). Their ham and cheese toast is the best in Collins place and very well made (Quality cheese, beautiful sourdough and good quality ham). They also have an interesting lunch menu that I would love to try...

There is a sign on the wall that says $11 for a toastie and coffee.  So I pointed to the sign and said i want that.  The bill came  at $14.72, <br/><br/>The manager raged at me because in small print it said "take away"<br/><br/>I said he should have given me what I ordered - take away - and should not have ripped me off.<br/><br/>boycott

The coffee was amazing and food was of the high quality and tasted outstanding . Service was friendly and fast. I will be back next time.<br/>The roasted butternut pumpkin salad with lemon chicken and pine nuts was perfect . I really like it.
Wine Dine And Play
Great space gets a great review when I stopped in for a coffee in the later morning before my later lunch reservation at Vue de Monde in the Rialto Towers building. The sandwiches and pastry looked nice.

We used to regularly go to Great Space Cafe. The reason why we stopped going there was the coffee there wasn't good. We thought we might give it another try. We had roast chicken and mushroom risotto and lemon grass chicken sandwich. The risotto's flavour was okay but the rice was over cooked. The chicken sandwich was good and full of flavour. The Coffee today was so much better then before, maybe they have changed their beans? Will go back again.

A surprisingly tasty lunch. We'd planned to dine elsewhere but our first choice was closed and the food court was hectic so we ended up here.  We were seated quickly, our order was taken promptly and the food arrived with minimal wait. I tried the 'Superfood salad' (& added chicken) and despite being a fussy eater (I hate too much dressing and an inappropriate balance of ingredients) I was really pleased. Simple, tasty ingredients, well combined and a decent serving size. I'd definitely try it again. My companion tried the pasta special and was equally satisfied.<br/><br/>The only negative I'd mention is that the servers seemed a tad disorganised. We ordered drinks when we were seated & were provided with menus so all good there. However, we were then approached by another server asking for our order within seconds. We requested more time but within another minute another server asked us the same thing. I'll put it down to eager staff (& I guess it's helpful if you're in a hurry) but know this can irritate some people so mention it for completeness.<br/><br/>EDIT: I returned a few weeks later & tried the same meal again & it was of a much lower standard. In particular, the sweet potato was quite crisp & undercooked. Again, my dining companion was very satisfied with their meal (this time a chicken burger) but it would be fair to say the meals are of inconsistent quality depending on the day/chef!
Whats On The Grill?
For a city food court cafe, I find this place reasonable. Service is cheerful however not overly attentive. I have had the chicken satay wrap and chips here a couple of times and it makes a good lunch. Very spacious seating which allows you to relax. Coffee here isn't bad either and is my no2 coffee spot when I can't be bothered walking to my preferred coffee vendor.

Great coffee depending on who makes the coffee. The best coffee ive had here is hot and velvety smooth. Price is within range of the area. However, the service is rather inconsistent. From having a very friendly staff to greet me one morning to being told that my name is too long for the coffee order another morning and then to have to wait there for about 5mins without even an acknowledgement that i was there from any of the staff.

My morning joint for a fix. Since, I Have been going here for a few years they know me and vice versa so I am a bit more tolerant. I do, however, empathise with the frustrations in some of the reviews. <br/><br/>The service staff are all constantly changing students and back packers which means service quality is a roller coaster, ranging from superb when the Ad-hoc team gel to confusion and disarray when the team is new or grumpy with each other. <br/><br/>They do the sourdough with avocado, fetta and chilli with poached eggs and toasted sourdough with butter very well. Coffee is good but there are better places around. <br/><br/>

Very Average; confused service. As a relatively new tenant in Colins Place, took to trying all the cafe's. This one fell off the visit list immediately.  Pro's - We got a seat at peak lunch period without a problem; a plus in this complex; but Con's - probably a reason for it.  Was it terrible; no, but on a lunch with 5 other colleagues none was impressed with the lunch nor the coffee and the service was awful; I'm not sure if they were new, but no-one seemed to know what they were doing or what the processes were; we were seated and asked to order at the counter, then after ordering got approached to order (with table service). confusion ensued; drinks where forgotten, they asked as to pay before we left, which we'd already done. It really shouldn't be that hard!

Decent coffee, nice location with enough space for everyone. Great Space Cafe, conveniently located at Collins Streets, is great spot to wait for the time to pass. No need for you to feel like a tourist.

The bacon side ($4) that I ordered with my scrambled eggs looked like it had been dragged around the floor. The coffee was ok. It wasn't busy and they advertise an all day breakfast so no excuse.

Terrible soup not worth $10. The minestrone soup I bought for lunch was an utter rip off. The vegetables were far too chunky and what I received was mostly hot water. Just lazy. I could see my soup sitting on the kitchen counter for at least five minutes before I received it. Won't go back.

Constantly gets my simple order wrong. I go to Great Space for the convenient location. They make good coffee, but they constantly get my order wrong - one slice of toast with butter and vegemite. I either get toast with no butter (yuk!) or I get 2 slices (and get charged for that too). Attention to detail!!

TERRIBLE!. Terrible service, staff have no idea about customer service. I ordered a sandwich and asked for multigrain bread with no cheese. They brought out a sandwich on white bread with cheese. Sent the sandwich back three times and each time it came back, it was wrong. Decided to cancel order and go somewhere else instead, where they actually got my order correct the first time.<br/><br/>I don't understand how people actually think Great Space is a good café - every time I have been in there, I have been extremely disappointed.

Good cafe. Good basic menu with great daily specials. All-day breakfast is my favourite thing! Some of the staff are a bit ditsy but the manager is great.

Went here for breakfast on a Saturday. Would not come back if breakfast was free. The grilled mushrooms and asparagus were cold while the 'potato hash' was crispy on the outside and like a fridge on the inside (fancy eating cold mashed potato? I don't!).
Daisy
Crap coffee. Had to wait 10 min for a latte because the 3 girls behind counter were to busy playing with their phones before I received my coffee. Latte had no head ( waitress had to use two hands to carry as not to spill any). Took one sip . Disgusting disgusting disgusting. Why do cafe owners let kids with no idea behind the coffee machine???

Coffee. Nice tasting coffee here, comes with a smile :)

Service excellent. Coffee superb. Toast to die for. I'll be back v soon.

At first I was a bit put off by the sterile setting and atmosphere of this place, and a few of the key specials were not available. Also, the menu has been reduced somewhat since the menu photos were taken, and a lot of the more adventurous options are no longer available. Neither is the Bircher muesli. We decided to stay anyway and were glad that we did. The coffee is excellent, being beautifully nutty and creamy, and the avocado on toast was great. They were generous with the avocado, the egg was poached perfectly and the sourdough was nice and crispy. Hard to cut though! We would definitely recommend this place if you were in the area. Nice to not be patronised by hipsters too!

Had the big breakfast good size serve tastes great & certainly value for money. Latte was ok but tasted a little burnt when consumed but would return for sure.
