Review Stovetop - Melbourne

Sarah Shares Melbourne (sarah.shares.melb)
@stovetopcafe is a cafe towards University Square/ Melb Uni📍 I love the natural light in this cafe 😍 we enjoyed the nasi Goreng and the baked eggs. Both dishes were so good! All dishes including the cauliflower salad were so generous! We went on a day where they were understaffed and they were so busy with takeaway orders 🥲 the barista and floor staff were out due to covid. We still really enjoyed our meal and coffees- mum really enjoyed the NasiGoreng 😄. Super wholesome. ♥️☀️ 🍳☕️

Located in Carlton right near Melbourne Uni is this gorgeous cafe! I have been here years ago and absolutely loved it and I can say that it has not changed one bit in terms of the quality of food and the incredible service 🤍 We had: 🥑 Avocado Bruschetta 🍳 Spanish Omelette 🥞 Blueberry and banana hotcakes Our fave was defs the smashed avo- I have not had a smashed avo this good in such a long time! I loved all the elements of the dish, the avo was generous, the brocollini was perfectly charred and delicious, a good amount of feta and the acidity of the tomatoes helped to balance this all out- honestly YUM! The Spanish omelette came out completely different to how I imagined. It was thick, fluffy and full of potato and chorizo, so delicious! A very filling dish. The only thing I would have loved to have seen is the chorizo to be on the spicier side to give the dish that extra elevation in flavour! I loved the addition of the sourdough! The banana and blueberry hotcakes were the perfect finisher. Drowned in maple syrup, these were divine! I wasn’t expecting the hotcakes to have blueberries in them and they were jam packed and absolutely divine! The addition of granola clusters was perfect for texture and the mascarpone on top helped to balance out the sweetness of the dish. A definite reorder when I revisit 🥰 We felt so welcomed to this homey, cozy cafe! We could not praise the service more. Each staff member was so friendly and made us feel right at home 🏡 A gorgeous interior! A must visit! 4.8/5 🤌🏼

Enjoyed a weekday breakfast at this cafe with a group of colleagues. George looked after our group and provided exceptional service which matched the great food and coffee. Definitely a cafe worth a visit.

Beautiful coffee by Dany, delicious almond croissants 🥐 ☕️

Not a great experience for a first time visitor. Was taken to my table and not even offered water which is basic service. I ordered a soy matcha latte and was given a glass of warm Soy milk with cinnamon on top(?). I politely returned it as I couldn’t even taste the matcha. They returned with another which was was no better. Ordered the baked eggs. Eggs were overcooked. When I went to pay, they still charged me for the Matcha and tried to charge me for a baby chino which I never ordered? There’s so many other great cafes in this area. I definitely won’t be going back.

🇯🇵 okonomiyaki 🥑 smashed avocado 🧇 banana & nutella waffles 🏚: Stovetop Cafe 📍: Leicester St, Carlton ———————————————————— 📝: Stovetop’s name comes from the stovetop burners used in a certain coffee maker. They serve up great coffees and delicious unique brunch to customers in the area. The place buzzes with life during brunch and lunctime as university students and professors head in. ❤️: With the revamped menu, the dishes tastes even better with such unique presentation. Loved the Okonomiyaki on the specials board—Japanese-styled savory pancake, topped with poached egg, dried bonito flakes, and smoked salmon.

So the coffee isn’t overly bad, there’s no latte art on any of the coffees we ordered. There are better places for coffee in the area. The ramen noodles was pasta, and had way too many bean sprouts. On the plus side, the pork belly was really good, I wished they faced the crackling side upwards away from the soup instead of soaking it. Stovetop Benny, that’s a good dish. Individually, the components weren’t outstanding, but when they were eaten together, wow! The potato waffle was great and crispy, the pulled pork was tender and flavoured well, and the sauce on the plate is good!! Reuben, can’t say myself or anyone at the table was a fan of it unfortunately. There was no Swiss cheese (menu says it includes, but we couldn’t find it), and not enough sauce, making the bread drier than it should.

Had a waiter with tattoos unsure of his name but he was so abruptly rude and ruined our experience. He was not helpful when we asked a question about the menu he just made us honestly feel quite dumb. Will not be returning here, extremely disappointed.

Best coffee north of the city! Quality food, excellent coffee and always lovely service. Can't wait for these guys to re-open

My favourite spot in Carlton. I cannot wait to get back there. Coffee is spot on, the staff really care and the food is A Grade quality!

The staff here are always awesome, and the owner is always very accommodating. Food is brilliant, a good place to do some work as they have power outlets for your laptop or phone and free wifi.

Stovetop really presented well with its modern interiors and giant west facing industrial windows that let in plenty of natural light. They have been in their new expended premises for nearly two years now and their menu read as well as the food coming out to other tables looked.

My brother and I enjoyed the coffee here and had a second round just to make sure. The smashed avo was far from your standard smash with the inclusion of dukkah eggs (a twist on the son in law eggs), and all sitting nicely on falafel fritters. My brother chicken out of chowing into the jalapeño chilies but I snuck them off his plate.

My miso and vodka cured salmon was almost like a salmon benedict. That salmon was delicious and such vivid colours on this dish. A favourite for me.

We finished of sharing a delightfully presented banana and nutella waffles which had other exciting elements such and banana and peanut mousse, salted caramel and fairy floss. Terrific dish.

All up a friendly pleasant dining experience with visually stunning tasty food.

Thanks to Paul and the team at Stovetop Cafe for their hospitality.

One of the best cappuccinos I've had in a long time. Really great quality coffee.

Food-wise, the menu has plenty of tasty options, I really enjoyed the Spanish Omelette with spicy chorizo.

Absolute great experience. Awesome dining area with incredible customer service. The food's representation was 5 star worthy it's self along with the taste. This cafe is now on my favourite list.

Wow! What a venue, everything about this place screams class! An amazing fit out matched by a quality feed. One of the best in Melbourne!

After visiting the Vic Market we were looking for a place to take the kids for a nice lunch. Stovetop popped up on the radar and it was a quick drive to one of the best Cafes we have been to in Melbourne. The space, the food and the staff made this an experience we will remember. Highly recommend visiting Stovetop, you will love every bit of it!

Few cafés in Melbourne provide moka pot coffees and Stovetop nailed it. The blend is well balanced, intense, aromatic, somewhere between espresso and long black. Service by a lazy unhappy waitress was a letdown but the enthusiastic barista cheered me up.

New specials menu wow! I had the okonomiyaki pancake and it was delicious. Not the type of thing I’d normally go for but saw another customer order it and just had to try! Loved the house blend coffee too

Really impressed with this great cafe out in Carlton. Friendly service and awesome food. Can't wait to come back.

Was super impressed with the Southern Fried Chicken Waffles :D I really hope they turn that special into a regular to their menu! They serve tremendous coffee too!

A family friendly cafe in Carlton that ticks all the boxes. High chairs, good kids menu, plenty of space for the pram, easy access, indoor and outdoor seating. It's a win from me!
DamoForce Food
Nice large venue with some great options on the menu. Coffee is great, you have a few options to choose from if you're a coffee lover.

Prices are definitely on the lower end for a cafe. My chilli scrambled eggs were only $15 and they were amazing. Perfectly fluffy eggs with unique and strong-tasting spices over buttery toasted sourdough. No complaints.

My friend also enjoyed her smoked king brown mushroom burger ($16.50). Unlike many other places, they didn’t use a veggie patty.

Atmosphere was strangely upscale - I felt a little self conscious shoving my grotty little backpack under my seat while the guy next to me was in dress shirt. Didn’t help that I only figured out you were meant to strain the chai after I attempted to drink from the metal pot 😂 (and then proceeded to spill it everywhere because I did not commit to pouring).

Coffee was great and food was sound without being amazing

Slightly underwhelmed by the cafe.

It was very busy on a Sunday afternoon but were seated quite promptly. But from that point on we were a little ignored. It took 10 minutes to be given tap water and then after that about 20-25 minutes for our order to be taken. We tried to catch someone’s attention for a while but we were pretty much invisible.

We asked the waitress if the chilli scramble was vegan as it said tofu and were unsure if it contained egg. The waitress assured us it was vegan. However, when the dish arrived it definitely had egg in it. Luckily my friend was really good about the whole thing and still ate it however, anyone who is more of a hardcore vegan if they hadn’t of asked if it had egg init after receiving the dish they would have been non the wiser and I don’t think that’s okay.

I ordered simple eggs on toast with some sides. My eggs were pretty much hard boiled and didn’t run at all.

But the sourdough was really good and so were the sides.

I wouldn’t go back in a hurry

Had brunch with friends the other day, the food was not bad but nothing amazing, the service was not very nice, got the drinks ordered wrong 3 times, and finally make it right, not very positive experience.
Vickyyy
The food was just average, nothing too special though.

I teach at Melbourne Uni & this is my go to place to eat whenever I'm on campus. I like to work here, but I also love the food: healthy salads and puddings, and the best eggs benedict ever. Wish they were on campus.

Stovetop is as busy as you’ll find it, midweek amongst the law school students and academics. It has high ceilings, a charcoal versus stone grey interior and an impressive menu for both your taste buds and Instagram, it is no wonder it is packed every lunch time. In a flurry, we were seated at the high table, which is more communal than most, before moving to a spot by the back wall. The fit out is swish and modern with clean sleek surfaces in dark and pale greys. It is noisy and lively, giving the impression that it is the only place to be.

Was my first visit today.
This cafe is very busy.
Also, Nice Coffee and brunch
So kind all staffs too.
Was yam~~
I will come back with friends soon.

We were invited into Stovetop to experience their upcoming new menu.

With great coffee from Rubia roasters, a tasty selection from both the regular and specials menu, and plenty of seating inside and out, Stovetop is a great breakfast or lunch destination close to the city.

Moving from the weekly specials board to the new menu will be Dr Martys Crumpets with dashi butter, miso cured salmon, spinach poached eggs, hollandaise nori & baby shiso.

A great breakfast dish. Loved the combination with Dr Martys crumpets.

Also from the specials board is the Banana Nutella & hazelnut pancakes, with vanilla bean ice-cream and salted caramel. So yummy and it is served with the biggest ball of ice-cream!

The Chilli Scrambled eggs w/bacon was really nice. Loved the mushrooms through the dish. Great tasting bacon. Just the right amount of heat.

All dishes were presented beautifully. Great service from the staff. The café has a nice atmosphere and fit out.

Thank you to George and his team for a lovely breakfast experience

Service was overall okay. I put 2 stars because when I went up to ask for banana bread, the barista said he would bring it over for me. Then when the waiter came over to ask for our order, I told him I ordered banana bread from the barista and he told me he would bring it over but clearly he was quite busy and he couldn’t, so he should’ve told me to ask a waiter to place the order. It was good initiative but the wrong time.
So I didn’t get banana bread but ordered the veggie quiche instead which turn out to be quite dry and tasteless. It wasn’t fresh. My friends chicken w chips meal was also less than average. Coffee was decent, but everything just seemed rushed because of the location. I wouldn’t come back.

I ordered the pumpkin salad and my friend had the avocado on toast. The portion of the salad was big with lots of quinoa, pumpkin, seeds and 2 large pieces of haullomi. It didn't taste bad but I think it would be better if there is more flavour to it. My friend liked the gooey dukkah eggs and we both agreed that the coffee was pretty decent.

follow my ig for more om and noms!
ig: vienne_iu

3.5 Located a stone throws away from Queen Victoria Market, Stovetop is a newly opened cafe that’s perfect for the surrounding university students. Featuring a vast, Asian-inspired that’s rather affordable, the only thing that’s needed is a bit of refinement on the execution of their dishes.

Did not have a good experience here.
Coffee here is good, no doubt, but that was just about it.
Food portions here are big and presentation wise it did not look good. Therefore I did not take a picture.
Service here is sarcastic..... I have dietary requirements so when I ordered the pumpkin salad, I had to ask what seeds were in it. The waiter (male with small ponytail) said sarcastically that it’s a big part of the dish and I should order something else.
I ended up getting the salad anyways (thankfully I wasn’t allergic to the seeds in it) but for a pumpkin salad I would say there was barely any pumpkin. It was very disappointing as all I felt like I ate were barley and quinoa. On the plus side though, the halloumi cheese was grilled well, the only tasty component of the dish.
The experience of the cafe ended well with the waitress (female blonde) asked me if the salad was okay and if it suited my diet. Thanks to her 😊 it made my day slightly better

We visited here last weekend and sat outside in the beautiful melbourne winter sunshine. We started with strong coffees which definitely hit the spot. We then tried the panko crumb enscrusted chicken Parma which was really delicious. With two types of cheese and thick cut ham, it was a fancy Parma with a delicious slaw to freshen it up and crispy chips. I recommend it!
We also tried the pumpkin salad which was full of grains and goodness. Finally we had the Rueben, with crispy rye bread. Toasted to perfection it was delicious! A really great cafe/restaurant, really lovely interior and great staff. Thanks so much!

Super popular brunch/lunch spot, managed to squeeze a group of 5 in for lunch on a weekday without a booking.
Service was good and staff were friendly. We did not have to wait too long for food, even considering the packed cafe.
I had the cauliflower burger, which was fried and absolutely delicious! Wasn’t sure how quinoa would work in a burger, but a surprisingly good addition. The sweet potato fries were fantastic, crispy and full of flavour (plus great aioli!). Would definitely recommend giving this a try to any cauliflower lovers!

Note: the Zomato menu is slightly different to what is currently being offered

This place gets busy!!!! We were lucky to get a table without a booking and had plenty of time to eat our food before the table had to be 'released' to someone who booked it. When I checked out the menu before coming, I thought I knew what I would order but i ended up getting something off the specials board. Fettuccine ragu.
The dish may not be the most insta-worthy looking dish, but man it was delicious. The pasta was so cooked well and the pork and fennel in the sauce was tasty.
Price was good, it's your average $18-20 range.
Service was a mix bag. The number of people who served us were friendly, but was a little bit difficult to get their attention. A couple were a little abrupt (you know, the whole 'it's not what you say but how you say it' kinda thing).

First visit to this place..
Initial views: it's a suitable joint to chill with nice urban industrial look and feel.
If you heading to this place, factor in some time to find a parking spot.. I hope you have a better luck thn mine.. It took me 20 mins to fins a spot 😜
Food was decent no disappointments there and service was quick..
We are going to visit Stovetop again in couple of weeks and try different items off the menu
This place is great as always. My friends and I have been dinning at here several times and it never disappoints. Great food and great experiences. Highly recommend it. :)

Friendly, ambient cafe. Chili scrambled eggs looked amazing but tasted surprisingly bland! Hot chocolate much the same - cool pattern on the top of the drink but rather watery and lukewarm.
Burgers Of Melbourne
I ordered the Rueben, the mrs ordered the Waffles. Both were satisfying meals which filled the hunger void. The venue itself is well designed with heaps of natural light and the staff are very friendly. Would dine again.

I came here for brunch with my friends. I got the avocado toast with a hash brown.
It was beautifully presented. The dukkah crusted egg was delicious, as was the beetroot hummus and feta. I was hoping the avocado would be a little more exciting than just half an avocado... some salt, pepper and lemon would’ve made it more interesting.
It’s a pet hate of mine when places advertise hash brown on the menu and it’s really a potato rosti... and the rosti was really tasteless, I had to load it up with salt to get some flavour.
I was also disappointed with the customer service when I first got there - my friends were late, and I sat there for 20 minutes and nobody came past my table so I could order a coffee.
I’m not sure I would come back.
Munchin
Standard brunch pricing for standard brunch fare. I personally don’t see the massive hype about the food. It was good but there were no mind blowing flavours or anything revolutionary. The service was friendly and I didn’t feel rushed to finish my meal and get out. There might be better places to go to if you’re in the area.

What a great café for Sunday brunch. Breakfast menu is straight forward, hearty and delicious. I had Stovetop Benny and it delivered. Braised beef was full of flavour and tender, with poached eggs and fried potato waffle, the combination is to die for. Service was on point and quick. I also love how they decorate the space. The modern industrial look is very pleasing to dine in indeed.

Overall experience was very average. Service wasn’t great, even when only a handful of tables were occupied. We asked for a high chair for young child and was given “the look” by wait staff. Coffees were not very hot to begin with so they got cold quite quickly and had course foam with huge bubbles, which I’m not a fan of. The food was okay but nothing to shout about.

Lovely food, disappointing experience.
Ordering pumpkin salad, bacon waffle with ice latte and ice coffee.. My girlfriend and I had a bit of a scare with a 1.5 cm piece of plastic in our ice coffee, Having worked in hospitality for over 3 years, I understood accidents happen as a waitress claimed “ it must be part of the container that broke off “. She came back to give us a second ice coffee, which unfortunately disappointed us again as it was uncomfortably bitter and weirdly enough tasted alcoholic. Being an avid coffee drinker, usually drinking long blacks and espressos, another waiter claimed it is just the ‘espresso shot’.. which I knew definitely was not the case.
Honestly I understand mistakes happen and sometimes we have our off days, but I honestly was not pleased with how they handled the situation.

But food was great, honestly one of the best salads I’ve had, but I do hope in future that there is a bit more caution in the service and production.

This place is really close to my bf’s apartment so we decided to just walk in on a Saturday morning. It was quite empty so we got a seat straight away. The coffee was good but not impressed about the milk, it looks more like a foamed milk rather than steamed. The menu is very interesting and there are some Asian flavours too. My bf had the beef bulgogi tacos, it was good, the kimchi was not too sour either but the meat was a bit cold. I had the calamari salad which was also good but i wouldnt really call it a salad since there is not much lettuce in it. The service was okay but a bit slow for a quiet day. Will probably come back to try something else since it is really close by.

Today is my birthday and I came here with my friend. We talked a lot and really had a great time. I love the atmosphere of the place. The toast is great! Also cappuccino and latte with soy milk!definitely worth yo try!

This place was super busy, even on a weekday but luckily we found seating. I’ve only tasted the coffee there (specifically the chai latte) but it was delicious and service was extremely prompt. My friend had the avocado toast, which she enjoyed, and also the matcha latte, which she said wasn’t the best, but overall our experience was quite pleasant.

Savour-y 🤤

FOOD: I ordered the famous Stovetop Benny and tbh, I would have ordered the specials if I knew of it earlier but hey, I’ll order something that’s permanently on the menu and deserves to be there for a reason! Let me start by saying, the portion is SUBSTANTIAL! I don’t know if I was full that day or the portion is crazy but I surprisingly couldn’t finish it which is shocking HAHAHA and I was so sad I couldn’t because it is an EGGS-cellent dish 🌚 So what makes this eggs benedict special is the potato waffle but what makes it even better in my opinion was the onion jam 🤤 That phenomenal mix of salty and sweet clearly hit every craving spot you might have and the potato waffle was so savoury and delicious! The braised beef cheek could’ve used abit more flavour but maybe it was meant to be balanced with the onion jam but it was abit bland however everything else was absolutely perfect!

SERVICE: Service was pleasant and nice but when you enter, make sure you walk to the bar to get a table because they are busy!!

Overall, I like Stovetop and being a unimelb student that studies in the Law Building often, I tended to avoid what was directly in front of me but Stovetop is clearly great and I’ll be back hopefully soon to try more of their stuff!
Makan2Melbourne
Headed here for a quick lunch, but it turned out to be longer than I expected. Ordered the matcha latte, which didn’t taste like anything, and came with no latte art, really a waste of money. for the food, I ordered salmon dish, which I had to wait for more than 20 minutes. The salmon wasn’t so fresh, the dish was overpowered by the yuzu sauce, which was very tangy. I usually like yuzu, but this one was just too sour because the cured salmon already had a slight tanginess to it. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience.

Second visit
Ordered scrambled egg on toast with a side of mushroom. Really liked their scrambled egg, which was seasoned well and fluffy. Tried their flat white, which was great, definitely recommend their coffee over matcha. Service has definitely improved as well. Pleased with my second visit. Would like to try their other menu next time.

Great place and great menu! Had their crushed avocado, and surely become my fave menu. Lots of flavour and textures. Great option for vegetarian. Coffee was also very nice. Service was very good and attentive despite being busy.

3.5/5

A good brunch spot. Food was a tad above average. My chilli scramble eggs tasted pretty standard. Portion was just right for me.

My sis had flat white and said the coffee's good. However the soy chocolate I ordered was not warm when arrived, probably been sitting out for a while.

Service was good unlike how other reviewers mentioned. The waitress was attentive to us though it was a busy Easter Monday.

Overall an average brunch place with reasonable pricing.

Food 4/5
Service 4/5
Environment 4/5

A lot of nice cafe near the MU and this one can be in the top 3. We tried the miso salmon salad that is rich in flavor and also the fried egg get my attention. We also tried the pulled beef with poached egg, which is nice as well. The chai latte has its own special tool and coffee is average.
The staff are unwelcoming, they are just so rude to be honest. They got a very bad attitude and I feel disrespected. The food is tasted bad as well, the chicken is not fresh and it is not crispy at all. Very bad experience. The shame of Melbourne brunch.
Michelle Yuan
I never gave bad comments, but stove top got me so mad. My friend and I went for brunch and correct me if I’m wrong, i don’t know what we did that made the staffs there so impolite to us, is it because we were using our laptops there? Giving us obvious attitude and the stinky face when serving food, what’s that about? The waitresses ladies there seem so off the right working attitude. And the food, to be honest, is not bad, but only moderate. Brunch should be relaxing, I feel none of the relaxin feelings.

This place is right near my work and it’s seriously amazing! I’ve been here multiple times for a pre work brekky or on my lunch break and it’s always busy. Despite this, the staff and service is always professional and super fast yet does not sacrifice personalization and quality.

The food here is next level, it is basics done right and then taken up a few notches- in my opinion this is one of Melbourne’s most underrated instagrammable spots!

On my most recent visit I had the stovetop Benny with an extremely generous side of halloumi, the baked eggs and the avocado toast. Each dish was extremely well presented and seasoned 😋 so delicious!! Ive also had the pumpkin + halloumi salad and the spaghettini which were both excellent!

Could not speak more highly of this place, will obviously be returning
#melbournefoodnerd

Flat white ($4)
⭐️ 4/5 ⭐️
🍴Smooth flat white that is easy to drink without being acidic or bitter. It’s not the most unique of flavours or aromas but a decent and enjoyable cup of coffee nonetheless. Didn’t try the food at this cosy & visually pleasing cafe this time around but the group seemed to enjoy it overall despite the general complain of it being on the salty side.
📍@stovetopcafe, 1/108-128 Leicester Street Carlton, Victoria, Australia
#cafehoppingkidsmelbourne

Tried out this cafe since it got a high rating and was near Vic market for my grocery shopping. First impression, the exterior was inviting and the natural lighting made it an insta worthy location. Beyond that the food was lacklustre for me. Or perhaps I made the wrong choice. Had the crispy pork ramen - was hoping for some crackling, by the time it was served it had turned a little soggy; as for the noodles it felt like that came straight out of a ramen packet. As the egg, it was perfectly cooked, orangey and runny.

We had a really pleasant experience at this cafe. All the staff were very friendly and helpful whilst the two dishes we ordered were delicious and more than generous in size. The ‘Granola’ was easy to eat and not to mention healthy and well balanced overall. The ‘Stovetop porridge’ was one of the best tasting porridges I’ve every had. Packed with flavours like cinnamon, honey, coconut yoghurt, quinoa etc... and the texture was not too thick either. The temperature was just perfect.
Drinks-wise, our cappuccino was light and smooth whilst our matcha latte was somewhat bitter (but still good with the help of some sugar).

I’m absolutely in love with this restaurant. Its my go to for breakfast/branch. The food is tasty, the place is cozy and the staff!! They are so friendly. GOOD VIBES!❤️

I love going to Stovetop for a cup of cappucino or flat white. They are almost busy everyday, expect to wait for a table during lunch hour. I tried the burger but it does not taste special enough to make me dine at Stovetop again.

Another delicious brunch spot near Melbourne University. I used to go there a lot when I studied at Melb Uni. They have recently renovated the cafe, looks completely different - very rustic! They have a lot of asian inspired dishes that we like. Our favourite was the chocolate waffle !

Had heard a lot about Stovetop. Based on all the great reviews I thought I'd try it out. Was very disappointed. I ordered the calamari and chorizo salad. The salad contained a few lettuce leaves, some pickled onions and radish and cherry tomatoes. Sounds good, but was so underwhelming. Also had some bread pieces that I found hard biting through. Calamari was overcooked and tasteless. Overall I was very disappointed.

We came here for afternoon milkshakes on a weekday and were not disappointed! The salted caramel in particular was delicious. We didn’t get a chance to try any of the food, so will be back!

This place is the heaven i loved the tea and banana bread was to good and waffles was to delicious to eat fast service but the price is little bit expensive the best thing was the politeness of staff

We are always looking for brunch spots in the city. There were some fabulously interesting things on their menu and specials. The food was delicious.
The coffee and service were also really great.

The staff are unwelcoming, bit rude to be honest. You can definitely have a better service anywhere else in Melbourne with the same amount of money. Poor experience :(

Visited stovetop today. I like the dishes that they prepared . I ordered the Thai style Crispy pork belly with a poached egg on the top. The food is really tasty and I was quite full after I finish my one. The food is well presented so if u looking for Instagram fotos , it is a good choice. I like it here because we didn’t need to wait long to get a table in a Sunday afternoon and the food quality is good. #brunch #melbourne #coffee #foodie #instagramphoto

Definitely my favourite place in Melbourne. The place is very spacious and has huge windows. Staff is really friendly and efficient. Food is well presented and portions are generous.

I didn’t like the coffee it wasn’t strong enough. They brought it in a thin bot when it was a bit cold. When it got really cold, I asked for it to be heated but the waitress gave me “a face” and said I will see what I can do, she finished her conversation with her coworker and came back to say I am sorry we don’t do that..... Well, got a microwave? Use that! Or just bring it to me hot to start with in a normal mug!!

With lots of cafes in the competitive area of Carlton, Stovetop has got its work cut out for itself.
We love the ambience of Stovetop, it has great lighting and warm colours to whet the appetite.
The Ricotta gnocchi was quite standard and highlighted by the chunky pieces of mushrooms.
The eggs looked attractive but were typically familiar.
Overall, it was a run of the mill experience at Stovetop

Ironic how I’m a UniMelb student but have never been here nor heard of it before hahaha! This place was so close to Uni I should’ve came here for lunch haha. Anyways, came well after lunch time so it wasn’t that crowded, which was great since we didn’t have to wait to get a table.

Ordered a cappucino and my boyfriend had a flat white, nice coffee - I think they use Five Senses’ beans? It was a nice blend.

For the dishes we had the Panko&Parmesan Crumbed Chicken Breast, Stovetop Cheese Burger, and a Sweet Potato Fries to share. The chicken tasted great, though I’d regretted asking them to separate the tomato sugo from the dish because it would’ve tasted much better had it been served as a whole! My boyfriend loved the cheeseburger, said it was one of the best burgers he’s ever had but it just tasted mediocre to me hahaha. Should not have ordered the sweet potato fries either because the portions were huge we ended up not eating them at all because we were too full!

Overall a nice experience here, would come again for lunch during Uni breaks once in a while. ☺️
Lovely modern and fresh decor makes this place really appealing. The use of black and timber throughout, along with plenty of flowers creates a fresh, optimistic feel. The staff were helpful and efficient and the food really tasty. Serving sizes were decent and coffee smooth and delish! I ate all mine before I thought to take a photo! Would happily recommend.

We went as a group of 10, and first thing I need to say is the waiters need to CHILL OUT! They slammed the glass cups and bottles of water way too hard in front of us all. One of them even broke on a table near us. Besides that, the staff were quite attentive and smiley 😊.

In terms of food, we tired quite a few things and honesty all the food is very average.
🍔 nothing exciting about the burger- the bun was dry and the meat had little seasoning. The chips were really crunchy, though👌🏽
🧀 🍳 the halloumi eggs, whilst Insta worthy, were served with some bland hommus. Eggs were well cooked though
🦑 The calamari wasn’t the best quality and was quite a rubbery texture, but good to share it around
🌮 the chicken taco was probably my least favourite. The chicken had an unusual taste to it, and wasn’t packed with flavours
The chia bowl was awesome, though! Packed with super sweet fruit and a very generous serving.

The menu is filled with a lot of options, and there’s a little area at the front if you just want a coffee and sweet to go.

Might be back to try another menu item, but this occasion wasn’t that special.

We stumbled upon Stovetop after trying to get into a cafe nearby which had a wait time of an hour, which is a common problem on a Saturday morning in Melbourne. Stovetop had no lines, and the friendly staff sat us down in a light filled/instagram ready cafe with lots of greenery and light-wood furniture.

I was pleasantly surprised at the improvement in food after their relocation. The chocolate and espresso waffles were amazing - not too thickly sweet and balanced with fresh fruits. It was also super filling and worth the money. Overall, I had a great brunch at Stovetop and look forward to more meals there between classes.

The Grilled Haloumi and Mushroom was tasty and service was very quick. The location is very close to the University of Melbourne and the decor is nice. However, the waitress spilled water on our table and napkin and ignored it.

These guys were the best, they took our reservation for a Saturday, very kid friendly and great food.
Food came out quickly, they taste great.
Most of all the waiters were super friendly and very attentive. Good little place we will return again.

I was invited to Stovetop to check our their new space and taste some food! Already buzzing with activity it draws a lot of traffic from nearby Melbourne Uni as well as a few working professionals. They've got group tables, communal tables as well as benches facing outward. On some butcher's paper on the walls you'll see some special off-menu items so don't forget to check that out before committing.

I got their Stovetop benny, their version had English muffins instead of your usual sourdough which I could appreciate, benefit being that the texture is softer and was easier to eat. Piled on top was pulled pork shoulder which was soft and succulent with perfectly poached eggs. Around that you had 3 sauces, your cider hollandaise, some salsa verde and a spicy hot sauce, all playing a role in the flavour profile.

For beverage I tried their Golden Gaytime shake, complete with a piece on top! Predictably delicious but it did get pretty sweet in the end, what did I expect? An improvement is to make it thicker, I love a good struggle trying to move it up that straw.

Other feedback from the table was that the truffle hummus with the grilled haloumi was too potent. I tasted it and it was pretty strong. Still a solid dish. Also their berry and watermelon shake, the berries overpowered the watermelon though I'm sure it was delicious regardless.

Staff were great and we hung back a bit to soak in the casual vibes.

We went into Stovetop last weekend and fell in love with the industrial atmosphere and the high ceilings, the space is very open which is something I really like

We ordered the haloumi breakfast and also the pork belly dish from the lunch menu, the haloumi breakfast was a delight, heaps of halloumi with truffle hummus , delicious mushrooms and a poachie on top. We ordered the smoked salmon as a side and was even more impressed that it had been treated and smoked in house. The salmon pieces were like that of sashimi, nice and thick but not too fish

The pork belly was one of the more unique dishes I’ve had for breakfast, it would be perfect as a hangover meal. The pork belly was tender with tender crackling and had a delicious curry sauce on top of it with a nice fried rice underneath. This dish was a standout for me and I will be back for it !

Thanks for having us !
Tinmans Treats
Not in your line of sight, you could drive by and miss it, which would suit the locals just fine because it is the posh uni students and locals cafe of choice in Carlton. Very well fit out cafe, there's a dine in section and a takeaway section. Light filled, modern furniture, clean and slick.

I just had a couple of coffees and a sausage roll because I was hangry. The coffee was decent, and I can see why this place is popular. I'd like to try a meal here and the food options look good.

Overall - Visually stunning, decent coffee.

Just an average brunch place located near queen victoria market. Ordered benny and king salmon. The taste was alright but the portion was bit small for us.

The food is good and tasty but average and it’s quite expensive depending on the portion. With the same price other places are nearly double the portion. Overall, average.

This place has a nice feel to it and they put a lot of effort into their menu. However, while my partner was rapt about his Stovetop Benny, I was disappointed in the breakfast salad. I expected something light and healthy but it was drowned in mayonnaise and I think had a whole avocado in it. It was very heavy and tasted bland and flavourless. The stone-cold egg on top didn't help and the promised heirloom carrots were not even on there. Coffee was good and service very friendly and efficient. Nice to try something different but I am not in a hurry to go back as you get much better salads in most other cafes.
Sandra
Delicious coffee. Both my partner and I were really satisfied with the flavors in our dishes: the pork Benedict and the baked The golden gay time smoothie tastes nothing like golden gaytime FYI

Meals that are so superior to 'cafe food', it's no wonder Stovetop has increased its rating to 4.2. Chef prepared meals beautifully presented, buzzing atmosphere friendly and efficient wait staff... A winning combination!

Great service, able to book in for large groups and pre order for work lunches 👍🏻
Delicious grilled halloumi, looking forward to trying the mushroom burger soon

Stovetop is a great place for breakfast. I ordered the chilli scrambled eggs with tofu & oyster mushrooms. First time having creamy chilli eggs but it was actually good. The portion was huge with fresh chilli AND chilli sauce on the dish, amazing hit. One of the best chilli scrambled eggs I’ve had. Service was very friendly & fast. The cafe is clean and modern. Highly recommend coming here.

High ceilings, rustic vibes, coupled with multi-textured interior décor, Stove Top is situated in an ideal Carlton location, nestled between the bustling campus of University of Melbourne and a short walk away from Royal Melbourne Hospital – and this is what makes it the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch getaway with colleagues either for a warm, fresh cuppa or some delicious brunch. Surprised with the quantity of Asian fusion-styled options on the menu, I was even happier with the complexity and combination of flavours Stovetop was able to provide. It’s such a close walk from uni, I can’t wait to make this my go-to breakfast spot in future.

Food: the chilli scramble eggs tastes creamy and airy. Not that impressive but overall the ingredients go well together. The panko chicken on the other hand is the star to me. I really enjoy how simple it is but the contrast between the flavours make the dish less greasy than how it’s normally served and easier to eat. There’re a couple more items on the menu that catch my attention but I didn’t have the chance to try them. Will definitely come back.

Price: the portion is massive here and the overall quality is good so I think the price is reasonable

Service: very friendly, attentive and helpful staff

Ambience: beautiful renovation, a little cramped inside but can’t blame them they’re so busy all the time

This place is pretty hit and miss. I ask for a hot flat white every time, and it's hot probably about 25% of the time. Their price has just gone up to $3.80 (BYO cup) which is pricey for the area given House of Cards is $3.60 and Haymarket is $3.50. Service is fine. The haloumi salad is excellent, and deserves a notable mention. The quiches, not so much. Water is brought out to the table about 50% of the time. Even with the reno and more space, it's still exceptionally hard to drop in at lunch time and get a table. It's just a little overrated for what it is.

Visited with a friend over a week ago to grab a bite and finish off some last minute work before classes at uni. The service was amazing and the waiters were all very friendly. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food which my friend noted had improved considerably since the last time she went. I ordered a brekkie roll from the cabinet with my coffee, and also a mini pork savoury roll to take home. My friend ordered the waffles from their breakfast menu, which she thoroughly enjoyed and managed to finish - a first for the both of us!
The brekkie roll was delicious and my latte was better tasting than many of the coffee spots around campus, however the pork roll I bought was extremely dense and hard to eat when I tried to have it for dinner and a bit bland in terms of flavour.

Rate 3.9/5

☆彡Went on a 12:30pm monday, not so busy but by 1pm it gets more packed
Very convenient walk from unimelb. Iconic stovetop symbol visible from far
Ordered: grilled halloumi salad ($16.50)

☆ The good:
- quinoa and kale in halloumi salad was delicious and generous in portion
- wait staff are friendly
- pistachio complements it very well

☆ Not so good:
- wish the halloumi was warmer mine seemed kind of cold/hard??

Overall, would return for a convenient, nicely presented brunch place :)

Good food at a good price at a covenient location after uni. The interior decor is nice on the eye, the food is good and the service is great. The gnocchi was the perfect lunch fix, those wild mushrooms were delish!

Been twice now. The first time had the grilled halloumi dish for brunch, which was unfortunately very bland. Second time came by myself, was told to take a seat somewhere, then got quite rudely kicked off the only table that was available after waiting for awhile for a menu because it was a four top. Ended up walking out and going to Seven Seeds. Unfortunate, as I love their pastries.
Dine And Dash
Stovetop Café is located at 108-128 Leicester Street in Carlton right next to Melbourne University. A huge buzzing café that offers fresh and modern Australian fare presented beautifully on amazing crockery, with an impressive and a vast range of specialty coffees.
Today, we were lucky to be invited to try Stovetop for brunch.
Walking into the newly-renovated café, we were blown away by the beautiful and unique decor - a very modern-feel with brick walls and tiles, black chairs at the wooden tables and high stools at the bar – good if you’re dining alone – small pops of greenery and an area with food on display as well. The walls display the coffees and wines next to a nice bar area. Very crisp and clean and huge! Seating is available outside as well.
The place was absolutely packed so make sure you book as you’ll never get a table!
From the large and varied menu, we chose the Taco’s, NZ King Salmon, Zucchini and Ricotta Fritters and a side of Battered Steak Fries. To drink we had the Chocolate Brownie Shake and a latte.
The Tacos which consisted of a charred chicken thigh, lettuce, avocado, corn salsa, pico de Gallo and chipotle mayo was delicious – presented beautifully with a generous serve of the chipotle mayo decorating the tacos. The chicken was cooked to perfection – juicy and tender. Faultless. The New Zealand King Salmon consisted of dry brined & smoked king salmon, served with a potato latke, goats cheese creme, pastrami cure, salmon pearls, poached egg and a dill herb salad. Again, this dish did not disappoint and again was presented beautifully. The latke was certainly different and something I hadn’t come across before. The Salmon was cooked perfectly as well. We both absolutely loved the Zucchini and Ricotta Fritters and in hindsight, we should’ve got a serve each instead of sharing!! Wow – a generous serve that was just delicious, crispy and soft, so tasty and the avocado was the ideal accompaniment to the dish. Chips were spot on too!
The Chocolate Brownie shake was luscious and just plain yummy. I loved the amazing designs on the latte’s – the cat face and paws were a work of art and the coffee tasted amazing as well!!
Stovetop serves both breakfast and lunch from 7.am until 3.30pm and is open from 7 till 5 during the week and from 8 till 4 on the weekends.
Overall, my experience at Stovetop was outstanding and way beyond my expectations. Even though I’m not local I’d travel to come back here many times and definitely recommend you do the same.
Split The Bill
Tucked between Melb Uni and the Vic Market, Stovetop is a great place to drop in for Brekkie/Brunch/Lunch!
The main menu has some nice twists on all the classics, like the Pulled Pork Benny with cider vinegar hollandaise.
I tried the Zucchini & Ricotta fritters. Not at all what I was expecting but it was still really delish! The dukkah coated egg was great and cooked to perfection. So too we’re the eggs on the Benny.
There was so much avocado I couldn’t finish it all and probably didn’t need the 2nd bit of rye toast.
I would have ordered the Bacon & Gruyere Waffles with fried Chicken and Maple syrup from the specials board but unfortunately they had already sold out!! They did look amazing.
The portions are super generous and really well priced.
Good stovetop coffee and the tea was beautifully presented.
Sam and the team were great. Super friendly and helpful with good recommendations.
I will definitely be heading back there next time I’m in the area.

Came on a Wednesday afternoon and it was packed, enjoyed the benedict and the salmon was really nice too! Service was good and I'm keen to come back and try other dishes
