Hadn't had Peking duck for a while so we thought we would try Dahi Peking Duck Restaurant. As the name suggests, it specialises in Peking duck.

Most, if not all the patrons in the restaurant ordered Peking duck. The chef carves the the meat from the whole duck table side.

We ordered the Peking duck banquet for $78.80 for two people. The banquet includes a whole Peking duck, duck san choi bao, duck bone and bean curd soup and duck meat with fried rice or noodles. We chose the noodles.

The duck was accompanied with 20 pancakes, sauce, spring onion and cucumber for us to wrap our Peking duck.

The Peking duck was the best dish of the dinner followed by the San choi bao. There was plenty of food for two people.

If you don't want the banquet, you can order a whole Peking duck for $55.

We were too full to try the desserts.

Went to Da Hu Peking Duck Restaurant for a mothers day get together with family. The Peking Duck was very  tasty - this is coming from someone who doesn't really like duck. It was oily but very juicy and succulent. Accompaniments (that sauce) were delicious.  Staff were friendly, informative and efficient, keeping our table well looked after. I'd go back here again but I'm not likely  to venture into the city for a meal, I''d prefer to eat locally.

This is a great spot for peking duck with family or friends. I find the restaurant reasonably priced with good portion sizes across all the dishes.

The food was pretty average. We ordered a mix of banquet A and B both of which seemed lovely. The san Choi bao was really nice and loved it however the soup that came after was less so and was a bit too sour for my liking. The duck was exciting and there was plenty of pancakes/ wrap but not enough duck even though there was still some meat left on the duck which I saw you cut. The rest of the night seemed alright and I was pleased. The customer service was great!

Tried this restaurant for the first time and loved it. Had Peking duck and it was delicious. Generous servings and we were all full. Staff gave great service but felt that the food was coming out too fast and had to ask them for time in between courses. They weren’t busy so didn’t understand the rush.

Got half a Peking Duck and the fried wanton.

The wanton was a disaster to begin with as it looked nothing like in the picture. A pinch of meat in all 6 wantons was a great disappointment.

The Peking Duck itself was good though. Will definitely go back for the Duck.

Service was also commendable however they should make it less obvious with the tip culture, as the lady at the counter makes it uncomfortable by asking you for a tip( with a big smile ) and gives you a black face when you don’t!

We ordered the Peking duck and it was very good. The duck was carved at our table and there were just enough pancakes for the amount of duck (usually we run out of pancakes).

I've been visiting this restaurant for well over 6 times over the last three years and last week, I decided to take my folks to have our Peking Duck craving fixed. I was amazed by the improved standard of service as the waitress was very attentive, enthusiastic and patient in recommending a main dish that I was so undecided on. She also came over regularly to pour tea and check if there's anything she could do. Her recommendation was the Sliced Beef in Cantonese Sauce and, WOW, it tasted delicious and the beef was cooked to tender perfection! The Banquet for Two deal was another thing I ordered - simply because I liked the entertainment of the Chef slicing the Whole duck in front of your table. I also tried their Xiao Long Baos, which were decent albeit a little dry on the soup inside. This place is really good for affordable Peking Duck that does not compromise on quality and taste! I will continue to frequent this restaurant!

I thought the duck here was really nice. The chef comes out and personally chops up the duck in front of you. Its good value also I thought. For 73 bucks for two people, so 36.50 each, you get duck san chow bow, whole peking duck with pancakes and condiments, duck bone soup with bean curd plus your choice of rice or noodles. The place isnt hipster feeling at all which is nice for a change.

When the name of the place have the food item youre after it must be good... thankgod it was!! 5.30pm.. walked in first customer and they hurriedly seated us toward the window. We ordered the special banquet for about $70-75? It included a meat sanchoi bao each which was big and very hard to eat on the cut lettuce, a whole peking duck with tofu and suck broth soup and stirfry noodle or rice. We were stuffed by the time the soup came so we had the noodle takeaway. The duck was crispy and moist. Carved in front of us and presented very nicely on the plate. We had plenty of pancakes and fillings and condiments. The broth was good cleansing our palatte. And the stirfry waa good when i had it for lunch the next day but not much duck in it just alot of veggies.

Overall very nice experience. Big restaurant on tghe first floor with two sides to sit. You have you walk up a flught of stairs. Service was fast and efficient.

A place I'd return to often for my Peking duck craving. Delicious pieces of roast duck with crispy skin carved up for you to place into freshly steamed crepes. They make a lovely soup out of the duck carcass too.

LIT!: great place for large group dinners and this place is pumping. The peaking duck was delicious.

NOT SO LIT: the dishes were smaller than other Chinese restaurants, especially the fish. We ordered about 8 dishes amongst 8 people and still went to a fried chicken place after.

Better atmosphere than food.

If you're in the city and craving pecking duck, this is the go to place. Well tbh, I actually haven't tried many other places because normally I just go to old kingdom. Da Hu is quite expensive for what you get but it does hit the spot. We couldn't decide between dumplings and pecking duck so we decided to try out a place that served both! I didn't have high expectations for neither so to my surprise the food was pleasant. The restaurant was really busy and the service was good. Our food did take a long time to serve, but the manager was attentive and made sure to check without us asking. Would come back but like to try other places first!

It was wine and duck night for the husband and I and a few of my work friends and Da Hu Peking Duck was the lucky beneficiary of our patronage (jokes - we were tipsy and loud, sorry!)

You come here for the duck. And it's very, very good. We shared 3 ducks between 6 along with a few side dishes that weren't particularly memorable.

It's duck done simply with its sole purpose being to be wrapped up in tiny little pancakes and eaten - nothing to complain about here! Servings are generous and the duck cooked extremely well.

Service is brisk and impersonal which is what you'd expect from anywhere in Chinatown really but they are super tolerant. Being a BYO restaurant we came armed with 5 bottles of red that all seemed to disappear across a couple of hours leaving a table full of rather rowdy and happy diners. Thanks for having us!

Reasonably priced pecking duck with acceptable standards. The pecking duck is served with lots of duck meat though, not what you'd expect with normal pecking duck pancake styled servings but it is a good, filling feed! So that wins points for having a meal that won't leave you hungry still! Do not order the dumplings, they leave a lot to be desired. Just focus on the duck, and duck soup. Very good prices.

My New Favourite Chinese Restaurant in Melbourne.
One must give credit where credit is due, and this eatery deserves 6 stars for so many reasons. However, when rating restaurants regardless of the cuisine, one must always take all aspects of the restaurant's offering into account. Nevertheless, its fair to say that; if I were rating it based solely on quality of food product, presentation, and taste, it would definitely score 6 stars. Firstly, the restaurant is conveniently situated on Little Bourke, as most of the restaurants in Chinatown are. When you finally arrive at their front door, you are greeted by a lovely young lady who was doing an admiral job of spruking for this very under-rated eatery. Then, you walk up a flight if stairs to the dining room where you are greeted by a few staff who seem only to eager to please. I was escorted to my table by the lovely Hostess Judy. Not only was she empathetic to my Coeliac condition, she actually went to great lengths to ensure the chef modified the dishes I ordered to ensure they were gluten-free. It would have been sacrilegious to not order the Peking Duck as my main, seeing as that is the specialty of this fine eatery. As an accompaniment, I chose the special fried rice upon Judy's recommendation. I couldn't believe how tender and juicy the delicately carved slices of Duck were. Judy was even kind enough to have the chef prepare a special sweet & sour sauce for dipping, as the usual sauce served contained gluten. The Fried Rice was a particular treat for me because I have been searching for a Fried Rice to rival mine since taking 1st place in an international cooking competition for my Fried Rice. The dining room, although not elegant, was tastefully decorated with traditional Chinese art, and warm and inviting. The staff were most attentive throughout my dinner, and made me feel quite special. I strongly suggest giving Da Hu Peking Duck Restaurant a try the next time you're craving some exquisite Chinese cuisine.

I was originally going to give this place 4/5 but then we were asked to give a tip (very distasteful in Australia!) when we had already spent $75. The Peking duck pancakes were excellent and reasonably priced. We got half a duck to share which was $28. We also got fried rice and vegetables in black bean sauce.

It is what it is.

A huge iconic establishment in the heart of China Town.

Renown for its, Peking Duck, as the title suggests.
Me; i like football, and dim sims. The fried dimmys here, are second to none.

For a quiet place to dine, and escape the city rush below i advise you try!

The hip pocket will also thank you for it.

We've been coming here for over 20 years + it's hands down the best Peking duck in Melbourne.

We hate places which pre-roll the pancakes for you - 9 times out of 10 means either it's not freshly made, or they'll put too much of one of the ingredients (ie. too much sauce, not enough duck etc etc) - or you're being ripped off by not getting an entire duck even though that's what you paid for.

Luckily, this still one of the very few places around where the chef comes out and slices a freshly cooked duck right in front of you and you get to make your own pancakes (to your own liking/perfection) + it's always consistently superb every time.

We've never really bothered too much with any of the other mains here (and find regular chinese food a bit boring compared to other Asian cuisines - even though they do have some interesting looking options) - however the entrees are pretty nice - great selection of dim sum + other favorites like salt+pepper squid - always a perfect prelude to a perfect duck.

Prices are pretty reasonable (probably a cheaper than anywhere else doing duck at least too) - it's not the classiest restaurant (or service) - but it's great value for money if you're just there for a great duck + fast service.

We always find the entrance quite amusing - restaurant is upstairs so you have a choice of going up a really old/dodgy staircase (where we are convinced the steps are actually sloping backwards and are going to cave at any moment) or an ancient lift which we're never 100% sure will make it to the next floor without breaking down (thankfully this has never happened to us or anyone we know of).

Anyhow definitely recommend this place if you are specifically after Peking Duck made the way it should be (and seems right on the money compare to ones I've had in Peking many years ago).

Update: the Peking duck can be a bit inconsistent. We had a half duck and the skin was really rubbery and chewy as opposed to crispy, making us wonder if perhaps the half ducks have been sitting around for a while and were not as fresh as the whole ducks which are carved in front of you. Next time we will only order whole ducks to ensure the most fresh portions are served.

--March 2016--

Came here with a group of about 11 of us and the whole meal only cost us $20-25pp.

We had the following:

1) Peking duck: so crispy and flavourful. We expected the traditional Peking duck with multiple courses (pancake, rice/noodle/stir fry and soup) but it was just pancake. Later found out it had to be part of the banquet (our bad). Still nice though. 5/5

2) cucumber in garlic: very tasty even though it was literally just a cucumber salad. Very nice. 5/5

3) prawn and eggplant in szechuan chilli sauce: very nice but very oily. Eggplant just sucks oil. 4/5

4) Vermicelli noodles with prawn: spicy noodles and they were so flavourful and were the standout dish of the night, one of us even thought that it was better than the duck. 5/5

Overall there were no dishes that we didn't enjoy. It was just wonderful, which was unexpected as it didn't have amazingly high ratings on Zomato.

In my memory they used to make the best Peking duck in town . That's why I am back tonight . However I am not very happy with the over finely chopped spring onion and cucumber . They somehow are tastier when they are chunkier. The sauce itself is also not as tasty as before ?
Peking duck banquet comes with San choi bao, Peking duck and duck soup and a stir fried rice or noodle. Very satisfying! For 68 dollars it's great value !
Will come back again for a duck banquet , but wouldn't order anything else . Otherwise too much for two people.

Meal was nice, but the service was a bit if a let down. We were mostly ignored, put in a far corner of the restaurant behind a pole when there were far nicer seats available. Staff were distracted taking our order and simply dumped the food on the table. Long story short, food is good if you don't mind fending for yourself in terms of service.

Reasonable price for pecking duck (expensive for a student who like to eat like me but i just can help wanting more pecking duck). Do recommend the jelly fish salad and duck tongue. Have tried some other dishes, it was just okay. So better save that money and spend on more duck!
The place doesn't have the friendliest staff in the world though ...

Came here for dinner tonight after having massive cravings for peking duck and after spending a long time reading reviews, we decided to go with Da Hu. Ordered the special duck banquet which came with a variety of duck dishes. It was absolutely delicious and so very filling. Definitely satisfied my cravings and will definitely be back. Service was really good in my eyes as the waiters were very attentive, quick and friendly. People always comment on waiters not being able to speak English in Chinese restaurants so I wanted to say that I didn't find this to be the case here at all. Can't wait to be back for more!

Da Hu Peking Duck Restaurant 太湖北京烤鸭店 specialises in serving Peking Duck, obviously. The restaurant is located at one corner across the junction of Chinatown. More importantly, ten of us came here together to celebrate Vincen't 23rd birthday. A special night for him, and all of us.  Peking Duck, Half: 27.80AUD / Whole: 48.80AUD I have to skip listing out the prices of food (other than the peking duck) because Vincent ordered everything and I did not get a chance to peek at the menu. We ordered two whole ducks for the ten of us. The chef would come by to our table to cut out pieces of meat in supersonic speed while we watch him in astonishment. Two rounds of this was hearty. I had ten wraps of Peking duck alone and totally feel unashamed with friends around me. I would say its pretty good for Melbourne Chinese food standard, but it can't beat Chinese countries' version of authentic peking duck for sure. They do it way, way, way better. But still, if I could eat 10 wraps of that, it could

Peking duck girl's approval. Ok i was born in beijing, china and moved to Australia when i was about 10 years old. i lived in brissy for 16 years and moved to melbourne for 7yrs. when i was a kid in beijing i used to get taken to the most famous peking duck restaurant in beijing. ...every week! :D so i KNOW my peking duck (bejing kao yia)!! if anyone can tell ya if its authentic or not its me. lol and this place is the only place i have tried in this country that makes the most authentic tasting peking duck ever. it tastes like peking duck from beijing. not westernised ones if you know what i mean. great atmostphere and friendly staff. and the most authentic crispy skin peking duck with the most beijing tasting tian mien sauce, and the thinnest pancakes. also u get shollots and cucumber not those sweet pickle things. highly recommended! :)

Not only best duck but best value lunch under $20

Came here for lunch a Sunday, was fairly busy but didn't have to wait for a table. Seated quickly by friendly staff. Waiter splodged a bit of my pot of Chinese tea ($1.50) on the table) but willing to overlook this due to a general high standard of service and tastier food.

Hot & sour soup ($3) came out in short order. While perhaps lacking the gourmet ingredients found at its pricier cousins, the soup base is superb, with enough spice to pack a substantial punch while the sour element bringing a nice sweetness to the chilli.

The lunch special of 6 serves of Peking duck ($12!!!) was phenomenal, both in taste And value. Duck meat is tender, moist and succulent, with fresh cucumber & spring onions providing a lovely crunch. The hoisin sauce had bags of flavour without overpowering the other ingredients. Pancakes a little tricky to separate but to use a bad pun, water off a ducks back.

This place has a reputation for being amongst the best duck in town, & imho at these prices ($12, 6 pieces lunch. ($23.80 1/2 duck $38 whole duck dinner) I tend to agree.

Would definitely recommend, have returned many times and will do so again!!!

This business has been there for the past 25 years and both the owner and the cheffs have not changed.

The Good:
Great customer service. Very friendly staff.
Great dumplings (very authentic)
Great Shanghai steam soup buns (comparable to HuTong)
Delicious food overall.
Not too crowded, very quite (I went for lunch).

The bad:
Slightly pricy but worth it if you know what you like.

Spot on!. Had a large booking for 11, and have enjoyed this place before (usually in large groups) - and it was even better than I remembered. Based on reviews I was expecting the Peking Duck to be great and the rest ordinary, it was all top notch... the only thing I could possibly complain about is the food came out too quickly and the evening was over too soon. We shared many dishes, including the Peking Duck, Chinese Broccoli and Oyster sauce, San Choy Bow, Chili Beef and a few others I've forgotten the name of (including a Kangaroo dish).

Even with ample wine the bill came in well under expectation (~$35 a head). Excellent evening.

Nice duck with reasonable price. I've been there countless times for the duck and it has always been a pleasant dining experience. The service has up and downs but this middle aged lady who wears glasses is always friendly. The chefs are from eastern China, so their food is a bit sweet compare with other Chinese restaurants, eg. the Wu Xi pork ribs, definitely has interesting flavors in there.

Simple restaurant and aptly named; for a large serve of Peking duck for a good price I haven't found better.

That said, some of the other meals aren't that great, but that's not why I go!

Service can be wanting, and waits long, but you have to pick your times. I usually drop by for a work lunch - often it's reasonably empty, which is great!
