Really loved our experience at Mr Mason!
Had dinner with a large group of mates yesterday and was very pleased with the way we were taken care of.
The food was absolutely delicious. The service was wonderful too. The staff were extremely patient with us and were very warm.
My only issue with Mr Mason was that the food took unacceptably long to be served.
Came for exress lunch at Mr Mason love the internal deco (would be lovely to sit beside the fire place during cold weather) :)
Pressure pork shoulder with apple puree & brussel sprouts - the pork was excellent, soft and tender full of favor đđ apple puree was very smooth and not overly sweet which complement the pork very well. Brussel sprouts was gently caramelized with hint of bitterness.
Passion fruit parfait with banana bread crumbs - I can't complement or crisis this dessert... It's bit cold to have ice cream during this weather, would be better if it's on the menu for warmer weather.
Would definitely be back again to try other dishesđđ
Fantastic dinner spot. On point French with a hint of Australian. Food was delicious and what we expected portion sizes. Good for groups or date nights. Dim lighting and upbeat music playing on a nice volume sets great atmosphere for dinner.
I always want to go to Mr Mason during the colder months. Love sitting near their open fire - even though it's not wood. The problem is, the dishes (taste) may not be that consistent. For example - Partner had a lamb once and raved and raved for the whole week. So we had to go back for it the week after. He was disappointed. Same dish. But not cooked as well. Dry / chewy in various area. I like my fire so we go to enjoy the ambience. But we would of gone more frequent if we could be more confident with the dishes consistency.
Also, they close pretty early, so it's not that suitable for late diners like us
Came for some drinks at the tail end of a friends lunch and ate their dessert the plum and cherry clafoutis which was deliciously French and at $10 was not only a steal from the friend that ordered it but also a bit of steal in general. We then had a few rounds of the White Mochtini which is their twist on an espresso martini. I really enjoyed the addition of the white chocolate liquor and it was much approved on the original for me (probably because I like chocolate more than coffee). The sleek decor and exposed brick gave it a nice ambiance too. Would certainly be interested in returning despite the fact that French food is not my cuisine of choice as both the service and atmosphere was lovely
Nice place, quiet, great deco and good service in the heart of the CBD. Food was good. Great for a few drinks after work and nice wine. Could come back
Duck is delicious, outstanding service. Not busy on the Wednesday night. Fireplace and a bar upstairs. Coming in on the little Collin st. chairs are not that comfy.
We had a French guest with us and thought that we would try out Mr Mason. I immediately liked the vibe of the place for dinner. Although busy we had a nice quiet table. Staff were lovely and very attentive. We thought the food was good and had chosen here as with burgers on the menu it accommodated for children where other French restaurants can be more difficult to find something they will eat.
The menu is not strictly nor traditionally French but was very tasty. The burgers were delicious but the pork sliders would be better if they were pulled pork. The lump of pork belly was too fatty.
Although the cassoulet was nice, it was deconstructed which is not what we were expecting so I was somewhat disappointed. Would I return? Probably not. It was tasty but not worth the trip to do again.
I went with my partner who recommended the place a while ago. We had matched wines with each course which were provided by their very knowledgeable staff. My favourite dishes were the steak tartare which was a classic done incredibly well and the salmon cured with laphroaig whiskey which gave it a lovely flavour. I can't usually drink the stuff on its own but loved the addition which gave it a smokey flavour. I would recommend giving this place a try. It was very pricey but the atmosphere is intimate and it's the perfect setting for a special occasion. We came mid week when the restaurant isn't incredibly busy.
We sat next to the fire and it wad great. I ordered the shallot tart which was divine. The cauliflower gratin in the sides wad mind blowingly good!
For dessert, I ordered the baba which was very good too.
Staff was great and very helpful.
Tried the chefs chocolate tasting plate for two, needless to say it was amazing. There were fudge brownies with salted caramel sauce and Oreos (top left), chocolate tart with dark chocolate twirls (top left), liquor filled Nutella balls on a popcorn crumb (centre), chocolate soil with their take on a chocolate cornetto (bottom left), and cream with coconut and freeze dried raspberries (bottom right). Service was quick and the waiters are very perceptive and polite. The layout and design is very cosy and intimate with dark and earthy colours. Perfect for a date night
Had a fabulous night here just recently. Food was lovely. Started off with a charcuterie, nice selection of meats, great bread, delicious accompaniments, including an amazing pate! Mains were duck a l'orange, nice but nothing to rave about. Duck was a little chewy, slightly undercooked for my liking. Sauce was lovely though. Plus one had the pork special which was delicious! I won with dessert, Le cinema. Little bits of sweet treats you get at the cinema- yum!! The creme brûlée dipper was pretty good too. Nice selection of wines, open fire, and a lovely waitress made for a great night. We'll be back.
Caught up with a colleague here for lunch at work, very busy but a table was available.
We had the lamb ragu, which was shredded lamb shank with mushroom.
It was very nice, the lamb was lovely and tender.
Only had to wait five minutes for meal. Which was appreciated.
Good wine list and menu.
Recommended, I'll go back.
Un grand merci à toutes l'equipe mais surtout a Mr Mason pour cette belle soirée inoubliable. Une explosion pour les papilles et le palais, une grande surprise de pouvoir retrouver cette ambiance et des plats réalisé avec soin. See u soon...
Mr Mason is a very interesting place. Perfect for a few drinks with girlfriends on a Friday afternoon in summer, but when the Melbourne cold weather bites, the outdoor heaters don't quite cut the French mustard. Haven't had dinner yet but the look looks good. But for now, will still to my French fizz.
Mr mason Chef's menu is a must try... Generous portion and tasty! Authentic modern French menu and great service. Their lunch special is awesome too! Absolutely loved their steaks and fluffy chips, and twice booked cheese soufflé.. It is my fav French restaurant and I am a regular...keep up your great work!
Thoroughly enjoyed visiting Mr Mason for dinner. Spent a great night with my husband celebrating our anniversary. We ordered the chefs tasting menu with matching wines. Great value, atmosphere and service.
Came here for work drinks tonight. It definitely scores points for atmosphere - the outdoor patio area is large and filled with the after work crowd and very nice in summer weather. I haven't been here in a year or more but I feel like the price has gone up, especially on food. If you are coming with a big work crowd, make sure you set aside a chunk of budget for food - dishes are smaller in serving size and more fancy than your average bar.

Reasonable prices in a fine-dining atmosphere.
We were very impressed by the cocktails and the service. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the cocktails were made well.
We shared the duck, maple & smoked bacon sausage rolls to begin. There were delicious. I ordered the Coq au Vin for main course which was an interesting deconstructed version of the dish. It was perhaps a little dry but still enjoyable. The others in our group ordered the burger.
We were disappointed that they had run out of the chefs chocolate tasting plate for dessert.
Excellent has always has been my experience here. Great service, great food, excellent lunch specials. An overall lovely experience. A warm feeling, cosy restaurant perfect for a business lunch.
I had been wanting to try their French onion soup ever since I saw it on the specials board in front of the restaurant. It was a nice lunch time meal served with 3 beignets on the side. Great flavour. $20 for the soup and an apple juice.
Loved my experience at Mr Mason! Had a lovely dinner here after we went to the theatre. Made a rookie mistake and didn't check the website before looking for the restaurant, so we went around and around the block a few times unable to find it! The entrance isn't where you expect. Anyway, this is clearly stated on the website, so our fault. The atmosphere and decor is fantastic - dark and romantic vibe, fire place, and private feeling at your table. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable. All our dishes were delicious - my favourite was the pork belly. One of the best pork belly dishes I've ever had. Thrice cooked chips were also a highlight. Great night and definitely want to go back.
The menu at Mr Mason is modern European with heavy French influences, and prior to arriving I had already scoped it out and knew what I was going to order. For entrĂ©e I decided to go for the duck liver parfait (surprise surprise), and for the main I chose their version of steak frites, a scotch fillet medium rare served with pont neuf potatoes and bĂ©arnaise sauce. My friend wasnât overly hungry and decided to skip the entrĂ©e and ordered the pork belly and lion for her main and ordered the cheese plate for us to share after.
First impressions of a restaurant are immediately satisfied when the first wall decor which draws your eye parallels your habits, âKeep calm and drink wine.â This cozy den oozes chic from every angle. The warm, crackling fireplace surrounded by couches, the dark wood decor, followed by an earthy terrace with plants. Classy is just one adjective to describe the ambiance which this restaurant harbours. The waiters were all extremely amicable and look after us warmly,  as we ate our food piece by piece without words. Aside from becoming side-tracked by enchanting memories, let me get straight to the point. How often do you eat at an impeccable French restaurant only to peer over an exuberant bill at the end of your meal Often.  Always left slightly unsatisfied thinking that the price didnât possibly match the repas precisely.  This i
Our evening started off the way every evening should begin, with French bubbles and canapes at Mr Mason. This was enjoyed al fresco with a guitarist serenading. Mumm in one hand, the other was free to snatch up the bite-size morsels circulating about. There was duck rilette with candied walnut, steak tartare, cured salmon on wafer and my favourite, red capsicum and goats cheese crepe. Wild mushroom pithivier, madeira, lentil vinaigrette We were then ushered into the dining section. Black walls, tan leather couches and bronze lamps made up a very sexy masculine room. A short spiel was given on the di
Loved it. Fantastic food, attentive wait staff, great atmosphere...I will definitely be back soon!!
Gorgeous place! Tasty food! All up a good fine dining venue!
Just about average!. A rather fusion european menu with huge french influence I would say. We dined here on a Saturday night, relatively quiet place and a total of 3 tables including ours. The sides and entree were extremely over priced in our opinion. Mains were priced moderately if compared to the justice it did to the taste and presentation of the dish. However many all mains were not worth it, we were a group of 8 people who had a 3-4 course meal, but not everyone was satisfied with their mains (individually ordered) especially the duck came in a very small qty and chicken dish was served not well cooked enough. The chips are great, try the barramundi and give Lady Mason (a flamboyant cocktail) - a definate try. Everything else average and over priced. However full marks for the excellent and warm service by the staff,
I can hear you -- until 7:30 p.m.. I don't go out drinking much in Melbourne for two reasons -- booze is bloody expensive in Australia, and most bars have the music up so loud that I can't hear anyone speak unless they're right next to my ear. I have great hearing when it's quiet. When I used to work lots of midnight shifts on psych wards in Canada, I could hear patients creeping out of their rooms in the dark stillness, which was a survival skill in case they were trying to sneak up to throttle us nurses. But so many bars are just ON FULL BLAST! and my ears get swamped.
Mr. Mason is a winner with me by avoiding those negatives, at least during their happy hour (5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.) Drinks are only $5 for basic spirits, a few wines and schooners of beer (only the Boag's Draught, but at least they chose a good one to be on special, not something like Carlton.) Good price for Australia! I was there with a social group and I actually got to talk to some people because the sound was at a decent volume. I didn't get any of Mr. Mason's food -- it looks good but it's on the pricey side for an evening when I had drinking in mind. The atmosphere, in this room full of exposed rough building timbers, was low-lit and warm.
Here's a lesson on why so many bars are loud, if you're curious. If you can't talk, you drink more booze! One of my drinking companions works in hospitality and he clued me in on this secret when I remarked about the pleasant noise level. People are socially uncomfortable when they're standing around not talking because they can't get the message across. To keep their hands and mouths busy, they raise their glasses more. That's also why so many pubs don't have enough tables. If you can't find a place to put your glass down, you drink it faster. All these years that I've been going to bars, they've been playing me (and probably you) like a fish! I never knew. I do know that at 7:30 p.m., when Happy Hour was over, Mr. Mason's staff cranked the music up. Time to make the suddenly non-verbal punters buy more full-priced turps. That's about when I cut out. I don't like being managed as though I was a lab rat.
Just had a very nice meal. We were served by a pleasant young lady, kristyn. Food was great, between us salmon, lamb, scallops and pork belly, all tasty. We did struggle to find the entry on Little Collins.... Atmosphere was really good.
Pleasant. As part of a Progressive Dinner that I was given for Christmas, I attended Mr Mason for the main/desert part of the dinner. They were expecting us, and we were warmly welcomed with a glass of wine. Our menu for the dinner wasn't the full selection of mains available - but they had the usual suspects in there. I chose the pork belly which was delicious, and my friend had the barramundi which they loved. We also had the chocolate fondant for desert which was amazing! I would definitely come back to Mr Mason - it's a lovely intimate dining area - and there's also a lovely outside area for the warmer months.
Salmon tartare!. Went here a while back for a girls night out. The food was amazing and so was the service. Two stand out dishes of the night were the Salmon Tartare and the Duck leg. The only downside to this place is that it can get a bit too noisy.
On a cold winters nights, popped into Mr Mason to a warm cosy table right I front of the hire place. Very romantic. The male waiter was so polite professional and very engaging. Food was a French fusion which was delicious and matching wines was perfection. Will definatly go back.
It was a very long time that I hadnât paid Mister Black a visit on Little Bourke Street down by the King Street end of town. We popped in for a post work drink and the interior still looks good and has been well maintained promoting a real urban feel to it with the generous use of brick, timber steel textures throughout. The open fire and chesterfield in the entry are a great entry and make a great spot to relax during colder weather. We opted for an outdoor area with a mixture of bench seats, cushions and high tables that should seat 30 to 40 people comfortably. Itâs a great little spot to mingle, chat, listen to other conversations and generally peruse life around you as you sip on Champagne or a Pinot Grigio. Service is at the bar and was adequate with no complaints. On a really warm evening this area will be buzzing with patrons. Really worth a try.Â

Great ambience spoilt by bad service. We've been coming here for coffee for quite a while now and lately we've noticed a grumpier feel to the service being provided. Is a real shame as this restaurant has a great atmosphere, great looking interior and a terrific outdoor area for those sunny days. Today in particular some of the female staff were more intent in their own conversation rather than paying attention to the service and then when you did get their attention the interaction was more of a growl rather than pleasant conversation. At $8 for two small coffees with attitude... we're now going somewhere else.
We enjoyed a beautiful dinner with great service last night. The ambiance was also lovely. Well done all!
I visited Mr Mason on Wednesday 4th December and found it to be utterly fabulous. I have just read a few negative reviews and from my experience, I can only assume that this restaurant had a polar opposite team of waiting staff and chefs on those days. The food was outstanding and the service was indescribably good. Living in QLD, I won't have the opportunity to get back as much as I would like, but for anyone in Melbourne looking for honest service with impeccable food, get yourself down to Mr Mason.
Really enjoyed our first visit to Mr Mason for the Age Good Food Month set menu. Food was delicious (especially the scallop entree!), wine was lovely and the service friendly. All in our party thoroughly enjoyed a great night with great food!
Our new fave restaurant!. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food, venue & service. The staff were very accommodating of our needs with two young children. We were made to feel very welcome & not an inconvenience to them dining with children. We have many go to restaurants for fine dining, this one is now top of our list. Could not fault the restaurant at all, a rare find in the city!
Pleasantly surprised. We went there last night and it was a pleasant surprise. To look at the place from the outside, you might keep walking. But inside it's gorgeous, the staff are friendly and welcoming and the food was fabulous. We had pork belly and a cheese soufflé, followed by a chocolate soufflé and the crÚme breule. Amazing! Go for the crÚme breule if nothing else! Would recommend.
Pleasant evening, good food reasonably priced. It was a little hard to find, because even though it's listed as 350 Collins St, the entrance is actually at the back of the building. It had a nice casual vibe, and service was attentive and lovely, but it took a little while to order initially as our waitress was busy with another table. The food was quite nice. My escargot was a little under seasoned, and would have been nice with some bread, but the salmon and eel brandade was delightlful. I had the baramundi fillet, the skin was crispy and the flesh was juicy. My date had the steak, was tender and cooked to medium rare as ordered. Serving size was good, the food and drinks were reasonably priced. We shared a chocolate souffle for dessert, and it was delicious. Coffee was a bit light even though we ordered strong lattes, could have been an issue with the beans? Overall a very enjoyable evening, would be back, and would recommend.
I recently had a work lunch at Mr Mason and whilst the food was excellent, the service was far too slow for a CBD restaurant catering to people with limited time for lunch. That can be easily fixed by having a few more staff on the floor during peak times. Otherwise I was impressed. I had the barramundi which was delicious, the atmosphere was welcoming and the outdoor deck is a great place for a drink. It is a welcome addition to the otherwise bleak "New York" end of town.
It's an okay and average food. Tried one of the dish in Express Lunch (which was the mussel) and the soup is too salty for me. It's an French inspired food, not authentic French food.
Just had Xmas lunch at Mr Mason. Lovely team of staff working. Generous and super yummy set menu. Great experience! Thank you
Love this place. Went here the express 2 course lunch amazing, fast service and never disappoints
Lunch special. Stopped in for lunch and had the 2 course plus glass of wine special for $35. There is a 3 course also which adds desert. We pass through the restaurant area and bar that had a nice feel to be seated on the sunny outdoor deck area. The table had ministrone soup, salmon and the beef pie. All dishes hit the table in good time, back by pleasant respectful service and was universally agreed tasted great. Unfortunately we did have the luxury of time otherwise would have been happy to spend several more hours so it was agreed by all a return visit to explore more fully the menu and ambiance is in order. Hats off to the staff of the day also. Very welcoming attitudes all around.
Excellent food & staff. Sonetimes it is easier to judge a restaurant when you have a potentially negative experience... We had an issue with the kitchen that meant we had to wait longer than usual for our mains... But the wait staff & front of house more than made up for this. Our entrees (chicken parfait and French onion soup) were excellent. And the mains (chicken and lamb were great) got better. Desert (ice cream sandwich and espresso creme brûlée) were to die for. The food and service made up for the little hiccup. They should be proud of what they have going on here. Great spot in front of fire with it being so cold outside!!!
Lovely for Lunch or Evenings. We discovered this little gem a few months ago and pop in for the Lunch Express Menu a few times a month. The staff are friendly and the ambiance great, both during the day and in the evenings. Food is excellent - love the fish pie and the creme brulee is to die for. I'm a Mr Mason member so receive great offers by email. Highly recommended A+++++++
Stunning. What a great sample of what you have to offer Melbourne. An amazing warm felt restaurant filled with comfy black arm chairs, couches and styled with a rip roaring in built fire place, and what sets it off even more are the copper hanging lights. The heart felt design continues through to the food. Only being able to sample just an entree as I was on a progressive dinner I wishes I could have stayed longer. But what an entree. A mouth watering king fish ceviche accompanies with an avocado pure, seaweed jelly, radish and heirlum carrots was an eye deal inspiring dish to show case the restaurant.
Mr. Mason has events up coming for Tour de france and other events with a French inspired menu that will leave you breathless. It's a perfect way to sample what they have to offer and a great reason to go out.
Mr Mason - 10/10!. I had the pleasure of experiencing Mr Mason for the first time over the weekend and I was absolutely amazed. Beautiful French-inspired cuisine tucked away in the heart of the city. The setting is elegant and sharp with a friendly relaxed atmosphere. My partner and I started with the carpaccio of octopus, chickpeas, smoked paprika, preserved lemon, rocket to share. It was a beautifully balanced and interesting dish which was delicious. We then had the crisp pork belly, vanilla apple puree, confit turnip, cavolo nero & the hare saddle, rosemary pappardelle, confit garlic, pickled blackberries. Both dished were presented immaculately and tasted even better than they looked. The pappardelle was freshly made and hare was succulent and delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody and everybody. Fantastic service too, very friendly and professional staff. 10/10!
Gorgeous Meal. I had the pleasure of spending an evening at Mr Mason last night and can I say that all entreĂšs, mains and desserts were absolutely amazing!! The wonderful service, elegant yet relaxed setting and of course the outstanding food made for a perfect combination for a fantastic evening with friends and family. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to all!
This is an excellent restaurant as soon as you walk in you see a very clean and well maintained place very nice decorations and the lighting is good for having a romantic dinner or a lunch i enjoyed the food the fish was very tasty and very well complimented by the risotto and microherbs, the service is good very polite and helpful staff the wait was not long but the place was not full.
Very nice place. Was there late on Friday night, was quiet. Fireplace, great red wine by the glass collection. Duck is a must try. Steak tartar is amazing also
Love this place! Always good to come in and grab a quick lunch or relax with a glass of wine after work. It's unfortunate that the business has come to a close.
Had a very lovely dinner here. Although it is a bit hidden in the side of a building, the rustic, cozy atmosphere was very welcoming. There was even an authentic charcoal fireplace that made the area so warm and relaxing. It would be great even just to get a few drinks with friends after a busy day at work.
I must admit the portion sizes are a bit small for the prices however I believe it was fully worth it. The chef here clearly knows their stuff as all the meat we ordered were cooked and flavoured to perfection (steak with crispy outside and medium rare inside, lamb ribs that fell of the bone so easily, clams that had just the right firmness). Also some lovely surprises in terms of texture and flavour including a duck fat cream which was not greasy or fatty at all but quite light. I was surprised since it was so fluffy and light like a vanilla cream dessert! The desserts were also fantastic and all homemade with the caramels and chocolates lovingly made in house with butter to make a consistency that was not too dense or too light, but the perfect in between.
All in all, highly recommend if you want some actual professional cooking.
We had a voucher from Red Balloon as a gift. It was a french dinner for 2 with cheese and wine. It was really fantastic dinner with 4 service of different wines each. The entree was the most delicious experience, large varieties and quantities. the staff were nice and professional. I recommend to those looking for something different.
Went to a work function here yesterday and was impressed. The finger food was great especially the pork belly and the sliders. The staff were friendly and they proactively kept drinks topped up so there was no waiting around. The outdoor area is also good and a decent size for three location.
