I don't normally travel this far out of Fitzroy so never new about this very long withstanding Malaysian restaurant out this way. My Malaysian friend took me here for lunch and said its good quality no fuss Malaysian food.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Malaymas is situated on St. Georges Road in Fitzroy North along a quiet strip of shops.
The interior of the restaurant is quite old looking with exposed brick walls so it makes the whole place look a little dark.
🔆SERVICE🔆
The staff here was friendly and attentive.
The tables were quite clean. Menu and water was provided very promptly.
🔆MENU🔆
Hainanese Chicken Rice, $14.00
🔆VERDICT🔆
I really liked how the chicken was served in a separate dish, and the rice also on a separate plate. The chicken very tender and juicy and was swimming in light soy gravy sauce. There was a separate bowl of light chicken broth which was nice and tasty. There were some chicken pieces that still had a bit of blood oozing out from the bones. I avoided those pieces; otherwise overall it was a nice dish.
Friendly Malaysian restaurant, great for an affordable meal out. We really enjoyed the curry chicken nasi lemak which had an authentic delicious sambal. The curry laksa was average but still enjoyable. The sambal eggplant was not spicy but had more of a dried shrimp flavour. Overall we enjoyed our meals and would be back
Delicious and authentic Malaysian food. The hainanese chicken is deliciously tender and perfectly cooked. I’ve only discovered this gem a couple of months ago, but safe to say I’ll be a regular.
Love this place it serves traditional Malaysian cuisine consistently well at very reasonable prices.
Staff are always happy and it’s efficiently run. Worth a try if you’re in the area.
We are weekly regulars - love the food, love the service. ALWAYS a wonderful experience. Hainanese Chicken Laksa, Satay Sticks, Hor Fun are my picks :)
A new favourite in north Fitzroy! Relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and all the dishes we had are super tasty. The Hainan chicken is especially worth mentioning, and each bite of it is tender and juicy!! Love it!!
I’m a regular here and love it. Authentic Malaysian, family run restaurant with great service and great value for money. My favourites are the beef rendang, roti Chennai, tofu & vegies, laksa with hainan chicken and the mango dessert. But everything I have eaten is yummy!
Finally Good Hainan Chicken Rice.
I found it hard to find Hainan Chicken Rice in Melb.
Chicken is tender, rice is very tasty, comes with a bowl of soup as well.
The second dish I would recommend is its laksa.
Healthy chicken rice kinda day? Definately this is the place!
Definitely one of the highly rated malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. I’ve been here for years and nothing has changed (in a good way). Their food tastes like a home cooked meal. My favourite is definitely their chicken wings and curry laksa with Hainanese chicken!
They got authentic Malaysian foods here that are so tasty. The milk tea was great as well and the staff were friendly. Will keep coming back for sure!
My partner and I dined here tonight after hearing about how authentic the food was - he has a Singaporean heritage and adores Malaysian food.
We were certainly not disappointed! My tom yum soup was perfectly sweet and sour...very moreish, I must have finished the bowl in a couple of minutes!
Next, the spring rolls came. They were steaming hot, crispy and full of delicious flavour. So much fun to dip into the sweet chilli sauce!
My iced lychee drink was the perfect refreshing accompaniment. Not too sweet at all (unlike some others I've tried.) By this stage, we were super excited to see what the following main dishes would bring.
My partner's curry laksa was served next. He was amazed! A self-proclaimed laksa afficionado, he had high expectations. But, as Malaymas' reputation promised, the soup was creamy, fresh, spicy and addictive - full of tasty seafood morsels, succulent slices of pork, 2 different types of noodle and the spongy, saucy tofu!
My crispy noodles with beef and veg in a creamy sauce was so unique and savoury - like nothing I've ever tasted before! The sauce was velvety, coating the juicy beef and bok choy perfectly.
The atmosphere was authentic and family-friendly, with a generally positive vibe. It was nice to see some of the staff making curry puffs from scratch at the corner table!
For Malaysian food lovers, I would highly recommend Malaymas. We will definitely be returning to try the Hainanese chicken rice and roti next time!
(p.s. if the premises took card and had a liquor license, this would be a solid 5 stars!!!)
Best fried kuay teow in Melbourne - full of "wok" heat and a good balance of flavour. Laksa was good but can find better elsewhere. Will come back to try chicken rice.
This is a really great restaurant to have as your local. The food is super. Try the Char Kuay Teow or the Rendang. Fried chicken is also great. It's all good. The service is the absolutely first rate. This is a great place for excellent food in a comfortable environment. Prices are very good too.
I've been here probably 5 times and each time I wonder why I took so long to come back... the Cha Kway teow with XO sauce is probably the best I've had. That's worth 5stars on its own. And the service staff are always so pleasant. Definitely a must do if you are looking for Malaysian / Singapore food!
Authentic Malaysian food - some of the best char kway teow I’ve had in Australia. Flavourful with wok hei. Ice kachang was refreshing and delicious too.
The best laksa in Melbourne! It's located at Holden street, Fitzroy north. You can just take tram route 11 from city, at Collins street. It's very convenient! Let's try all the food over there, it's delicious!
Tasty Malaysian food in a no frills venue. The food was very quick to be prepared and staff were lovely. Good option for a quick and tasty meal
Great authentic food and great service. Definitely recommend for a family dinner. Located right next to tram stop and easily accessible. My favourite was curry puff and hainanese chicken.
Authentic Malaysian experience with the orange plastic plates and all. The food is awesome and is true to its roots. The setting is rustic but not in a hipster cafe way. The staff here is really friendly and helpful. Great for friends and family as well as for those craving Malaysian cuisine.
I reckon they have the top 3 Char Kuay Teow. Although I must point out that it comes with calamari and calamari and CKT does not go. It does not change the flavour much though. The Kuay Teow use is somewhat thinner and more translucent compare to normal thicker Kuay Teow which I don't fancy.
Another of my favourite is fried chicken wings. Just because I like fried stuff and it's juicy. 😄
Love the char koay teow from this place. Everything was done to perfection. Couldn't believe how busy it was for a Tuesday night. Atmosphere was clean and vibrant.Great range on their menu with lots of tasty delicacies from Malaysia.
One of the best Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne - especially the char kuey teow, which is full of flavour and very authentic. Mee rebus was not bad too.
Been here many times for the past 8-9 years now and never disappointed, the food is still the same standard, staff members are always friendly. Feels like back home in Malaysia it's great c: all tine favourite dish would have to be char kueh teow spicy! 👍
This has been a regular go to for my family and they never disappoint.
Great food and great prices.
Staff are great.
Quite possibly the best laksa and roti in town
This place is great.
I lived in Malaysia for 4 years and this is a great representation of how the food is over there.
Everything came out super hot and super fresh.
Will go back for sure.
Quaint little place. We had the prawn Laksa and Nasi Lemak and a serve of fried chicken wings. The curry with the Laksa was authentic, good flavor. We hoped for a little more kick with the chilli level but we understand they need to make it accessible to the local Aussies. The Nasi Lemak, rice and chicken curry had good flavour, ikan billis(anchovies) and nuts were crunchy and not soft. The NL Sambal was a little on the sweet side but still had good flavour. Chic wings were well seasoned. Served hot which was good.
The best laksa ever. Creamy but not too heavy, heaps of fresh veggies and the eggplant is great.
Have had other things from the menu that have been delicious too.
The best Northside Malaysian place by far. Nasi Lemak, Indian Mee Goreng and the Kway Teow are consistent highlights. Super quick and really friendly.
Gave me the true flavour as if I was in Penang. Friendly staff, faultless food and the chendol was best I've had! Can't wait to come back. Would love to learn some kitchen secrets!
I must be having restaurant amnesia because I'd forgotten this place existed and that I didn't have to drive to Flemington to get great laksa. Cheap, cheerful and really good food
A great place to go when you want a cheeky laksa and a comfy place to eat it. It might not be the best laksa in town, but the menu is solid and the staff are good.
A very good place for casual, comfort Malay food. We ordered the Fried Koey Teow which was scrumptious, smoky and delicious. We also tried the Hainanese chicken rice which was also tasty (though we had better). Staff was attentive and welcoming as well.
First time visit was a winner. Fresh and tasty food. Lovely laksa, noodles, malaymas rice. Doesn't look much from the outside but worth venturing in. Will be back!
Holy Moly - the best darned Hainanese chicken, well, this side of Hainan. The beef rendang and gado gado are also very good. Try not to fill up on the flakey, buttery roti with peanut sauce, I dare you... NB. this is an alcohol free restaurant but Longplay is an awesome little bar you can roll into next door after dinner.
Great value for authentic Malaysian market food.
The food is on the cheaper side but still scrumptious with authentic ingredients. The char just teow, mee rubus and lohmee are especially yummy.
Don't even get me started on the ice kachang! Highly recommended.
This place is so great we eat here all the time! I would like to try other things but the combination beef hor fun is so good, I always order that! Amazing food they even specially make a dish for my 5yo who loves tofu but likes it simple haha! I did try my partners food the curry laksa and the fried char keow also the crispy noodles with egg gravy soooo soooo good!!!!
North Fitzroy Food Addict
+4
If you're after a truly satisfying Malaysian meal Malaymas is the place to go. Authentic, tasty fresh food. Highly recommend the laksa, chicken curry and sambal kankong. In saying that everything on the menu is delicious. Been going for years and will continue to go.
If you craving Malaysian food while you in Melbourne, come to this restaurant in Fitzroy. They have the best service and they make great drinks and food. Seriously you won't be disappointed. Thumbs up👍👍
From the outside, Malaymas does not look like much. But once you try their food, you will realize that looks does not matter. Often packed and even if not, the number of takeaways proves how popular Malaymas is with the masses. By Melbourne's standard, Malaymas is definitely one of the best Malaysian restaurant in town. Malaymas' char kway teow, Hainanese chicken rice, prawn noodles, laksa, hor fun and ice kachang are one of the most authentic versions you can find in Melbourne. The nasi lemak, beef rendang, Nyonya fried vermicelli and Singapore fried vermicelli, on the other hand, are not that good - often lacking in flavour. Despite the misses, most dishes do hit the mark and are quite authentic, both in texture and taste. The service is much better than most Asian restaurants, staffs are friendly, polite and do actually interact with you. But one thing that bugs me is there is only one staff making the drinks, which sometimes mean you are halfway through your food before your drinks actually arrive.
I've been coming here for as long as I remember.
My usual dishes to order are the laksa, hokkien mie and Indian mie goreng. Also quite like the roti chanai kosong.
The laksa is more coconutty so beware if you don't like too much coconut in your laksa.
Hokkien mie has lovely little fried pork bits and the Indian med goreng has a good variety of veggies in it for all you omnivores who want veggies.
Another favourite of my family is the Loh mie.
Portions are large and ingredients can unfortunately vary (eg number of prawns) but quality is usually very good.
My only real complaint is that I wish they were more generous with the chilli.
We came through at about 9 pm just to have some ice kacang. The restaurant seems well presented, however felt that the ice kacang was overly sweet. Worth a try if you're in the area.
Best Hainanese chicken rice, green beans balacan very tasty too. Love this place, friendly service too. We'll come back soon. If we live close by, we'll probably visit everyday!
The kway teow is pretty decent. Tasty and with the essential wok flavour. Probably wasn't as tasty as I was expecting, likewise the texture wasn't so authentic. The mee rebus was pretty great, impressively authentic by Australian standards. Was probably missing enough presence of the soy bean paste and the consistency was more grainy than the smooth gravy found overseas. Overall, definitely enjoyable.
Seafood curry laksa, the best you will ever taste!!!! Yummy!!! I have been coming here for 14 years now, love my laksa, oh the other items on the menu are great too. My partner is not a fan of any Asian cuisines, but loves this place, great prices, great staff, great venue!!😍😍😍
Two huge hit laksas, spicy chicken wings and spring rolls for $35. Bargain. Especially as the laksas were so delicious. Got extra veggies in the fishball laksa. So yummy. We both took half home in take away containers for a perfect lunch tomorrow. So yummy. Great service too.
2017
This time also tried out the Ice Kacang for dessert. If the ice for the ice kacang can be finer that would be better, might be easier to eat in a bigger bowl, can be quite messy when eat till the end, hope to get more nuts and corns.
2015
Tried few dishes before: fried nyonya bee hun, fried kuey teow, curry laksa, hainamese chicken rice, however I will stick with my order if I come to this place: combination char hor fun. This is cash only restaurant, prepare cash when you go.
Amazing food great laksa well flavoured
No beating around the bush here – the Ice Kacang ($6.5) was bloody delicious. Drizzled with an irresistible mixture of rose syrup and sweet-yet-salty palm sugar, the dessert was made better by the generous scattering of crushed peanuts and sweet corn. And the hidden bounty of beans, grass jelly, and agar under the sweet ice crystals tipped us over into sheer ecstasy.
It's always great to find a place that serves authentic Malaysian food in Melbourne, so I'm very happy that I found Malaymas. Located on St Georges Rd in North Fitzroy, it's a fairly unassuming little restaurant that serves up great hawker-style dishes, m
The food and service was great. The char Kwei teow and Teh Tarik was excellent. I will come back to try others as there were so many choices.
I love this place. I have eaten here so many times I have lost count. I have eaten here every week for the past couple of years and I still get excited to eat the seafood laksa. Great service, food, price and staff. Did I mention I love the Laksa???
Better than the usual. Quite simply good Malay food done well, have been making my way through the menu with not many misses. The spice is tamed down a bit for western taste buds, which is a shame, it is all there, just not at 11 like it would be in KL
Problems, can't BYO, they just don't have a license and they have no intention in getting one :-(
I prefer to eat in, but you can take away as well
Love the food and service. Top Notch! Where have I been?. Been living in the area for over a decade and just discovered this little gem.
The bowl of Laska is to die for and the Ice kachang dessert is very memorable, very yummy.
Hainanese chicken hor fun is really good, tip is to pre-order the Hainanese chicken because one time I did go and they sold out.
Had a booking for 6 people one night and only paid $128, we ate our little hearts out and had dessert and drinks as well.
Will go back and keep coming up.
Note to owner: The waitress Trang is a very lovely girl, always smiling and friendly, that's what you call a girl that knows superb customer service, great asset to your business.
Keep up the good work.
This place is the best! It has a 90% rating because it really is THAT tasty! My housemates and I have been eating here once a week for 2 years now. Best curry laksa and keow tow in Melbourne! Their rendang is also divine.
I can't believe people have complained about the service here; Malaymas staff are so lovely. Always greeted with a smile.
Highly recommend this place.
Oh and definitely dip your curry puffs or rotti in the rendang sauce. Best idea ever.
WE LOVE YOU MALAYMAS!
Fantastic food and service. Had lunch for two, the food here is fabulous, really fresh and tasty, better than many other Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne. The service was really friendly and helpful. Note it is cash only. Definitely worth a trip out to North Fitzroy, we'll be back!
I can see why this place gets a good wrap. It does Malaysian and Chinese takeaway well. Laksa is particularly good, I like the mee goreng and kway Tiao as well. Service is fast and friendly. There are plenty of tables available for eating in if you'd prefer.
Exceptionally good. Combination Beef Hor Fun - best noodles I've had in a long time. The shaved iced dessert was also incredible. Service very attentive too. 8/10
Best authentic Malaysian food in Melbourne. Never fails to impress my taste-buds, no matter what you order. The clam chow kueh teow, the hainanese chicken rice, curry laksa and the nasi lemak are a must! Also the ice kacang tastes like it's straight from Malaysia.
Friendly staff, quick service and nice ambient. Beware though, especially during the weekend evenings it can be packed as, so better book a table beforehand!
Delicious, my local. Friendly staff.
Just like being in malaysia. I love this place, everything is so authentic and delicious. The only problem is that it gets too busy!!!
Best Malaysian Food in Town. Authentic Malaysian food!!! I've been there several times and always happy with what I got! Service is really good too!! A++++
Amazing roti chanai. Big portions and quick service.
Solid performer. Far from the best Malay cuisine, but a great option for a quick meal or take away.
The best!. Never disappointed! just like being in Malaysia!
Love it. Been many times as it's quite close to home. Service is good as is the food. Cha Kway Teow with XO sauce is tasty as is the Laska. The spring rolls for the kids were a bit average - reminded me of a Chiko roll sans poster of girl on motorcycle.
I haven't been back to Malaymas for a while. Nothing has changed, all still the same. Great food and reasonable price. Will make an effort to come back more often :)
We don't normally travel across Melbourne city just to dine at a restaurant but Malaymas is definitely one of our exceptions.
Everything we had there was delicious and packed with authentic flavors. I highly recommend their curry laksa (we had the fish ball one), fried chicken wings, curry puffs, Hainanese chicken rice and don't forget their ice kacang!!
To top it off, they have a wonderful cast of responsive, friendly and efficient staff members. We were looked after really well and felt like home.
Thank you!
Malaymas is located on the busy strip of St George's Road, but most certainly worth pulling over for.
On the first visit, we ordered roti with beef rendang, rice with satay chicken and combination crispy mee hoon. We went at 6:30pm on a Sunday night and the Hainanese chicken was completely sold out!!! The food could have come out hotter (in temperature, not spice) and the satay chicken was the most average of all three dishes. However, the roti was delicious and fluffy, as was the curry as it had depth of flavour.
The waitress mentioned you had to pre-order the chicken as it was their best seller, so the following week, we ordered takeaway. We HAD to try the chicken! This time we ordered fried kuey teow, seafood crispy mee hoon and a whole Hainanese chicken with rice and soup. ALL dishes were fabulous and we didn't even need to heat any up when we got home—I got the heat I wanted!
Highly recommend if you're looking for an authentic Malaysian experience, just pre-order the chicken when you make a booking!
Authentic Malaysian food... very delicious and good quality. Tried their hainanese chicken rice, malaysian dark hokkien mee, char keuw teow and wan tan hor.... also had fried chicken drumlets too.... roti with condensed milk and curry .... desert green sago with ice and coconut milk..... their teddy bear milk tea is also so nice!!!
The food quality never change from the last visit which is 5 years ago. Very good and authentic Malaysian food. Highly recommended. Will definitely come back.
One of my favourite Malaysian Restaurants in Melbourne. Malaymas is a family run business serving delicious and authentic Malaysian food. Malaymas is a cozy little restaurant with lovely vibe, and friendly service.
What we got:
🍴 Fried Chicken Wings
🍴 Special Fried Veg Balls
🍴 Hainanese Style Chicken
🍴 Fried Kuey Teow
🍴 Roti with Beef Rendang
🍴 Combination Hor Fun
🍴 Hokkien Mee
🥤 Teh Ais
Malaymas have the cute teddy Teh Terik!!! I couldn't resist not getting it haha and it was definitely the best choice. Love the strong tea flavour, not too sweet as well. Definitely recommend booking in advance and pre-ordering their Hainanee Style Chicken because it is so popular. Chicken is so soft and tender, very juicy. Beef Rendang is also a must order - beef is slow cooked so super soft.. I could have more than 2-3 bowls of rice with the hainanese chicken and beef rendang. My favorite dishes at Malaymas!!! Also love their Fried Kuey Teow - Prawns are big and very flavoursome with "wok hey"!
Excellent and authentic Malaysian foods. Must pay for a visit at the very least!
An amazing version of Nasi Lemak. Not spicy, but still absolutely beautiful. The meal was above average size for price, stuck to the Chinese version of the meal. No pickled veggies. Entrees were prompt, reasonably sized and delicious.
The special rice (vegetarian) was huge and very tasty. Service was prompt and friendly.
Definitely going back again.
