Great pub and my favourite go to along Chapel st. Outdoor seating is mint as is indoor and the garden bar, plenty of space. Generous happy hour too (4-7 Monday to Friday). I ate the barramundi and was impressed with the quality of food. My partner had the burger and loved it.

Great work temperance hotel. I wasn't pleasantly surprised, or surprised in any way - actually I didn't think much at all what the temperance hotel should be, as I had never been, or at least cant remember having gone, unless I had been before the renovations which I'm guessing were a few years ago,but which, to their credit, dont seem distant even if they were a few years old, owing I guess to the odd treatment of the walls in the male toilet which I reckon is pretty timeless. Anyway I had a good time cheers

Friendly staff and nice food! Great deal with monday&wednesday steak special and with the 4-7pm happy hour deal! Happy deal happy tummy!

Nice food and great Dj's on the weekend. I need to check out some of the live music on a Sunday one of these days...

It's an old favourite. Good for people and car watching and a cold beer. Our dog loves sitting udder the table snapping up any morsels that fall from our plates. The fried cauliflower... although not really healthy was a fabulous snack to share. Yum!!!!

Came here for the bottomless Mexican 6-8pm selected days. Margs, beer and house wines on menu. Food was plenty and they catered for my diatary requirements. Only fault was that no one came to check on us during the 2 hour.

Take me back to the days when we could enjoy a leisurely afternoon drink at a local pub. The Temperance Hotel on Chapel Street is a cool corner hotel with a vibrant atmosphere, cold beer on tap and a nice wine selection. Popular with locals, it gets really busy here during happy hour and on weekends.

We didn't eat anything, but the menu looked pretty decent, with plenty of pub classics. Our drinks were enjoyed outside in the sunshine as we watched people go by. Service was excellent and it was a lovely and chilled spot to enjoy an afternoon drink.

Sitting out in the sun with a drink and this beautiful platter, live music in the background. What more could you ask for. Great drink deals and a really well constructed platter. Dips a stand out

An old worldly styled interior makes the Temperance Hotel a very cozy setting. Nice relaxing venue to catch a game of cricket (indoors) if the summer heat is too intense.

We arrived to the fireplace going which was a welcome delight to escape the cold Melbourne day! Food is your typical pub food, well priced and a decent size. I ordered the fish tacos - amazing! I could have those again! My friend had the mushroom pizza - so so good. We shared the croquettes but they lacked seasoning, easy to fix though!

Wonderful food great environment and the loveliest waitress Ash! We had a great night because of her and had so much fun. Drinks and food are exceptional!

Always an awesome spot to have a drink, expect for when they run out of pimms. The food was surprisingly not bad would definitely come back for a drink and some food.

Temperance Hotel is in South Yarra and they had some amazing deals. But lately most of the Southside has been really quiet. The shops here are struggling and some of the restaurants here are the same. Bar where the drinks are being poured. But the Temperance has had many people coming back and many functions going on. In fact their bar is always busy and the bartenders are always smiling. They never are pretentious. When the new guys don't know something they always ask. People are happy to ask the bartenders questions about the wine and beer and they should.

Came here on a Thursday night for some cocktails and pizza. They do $10 cocktails on Thursday which great value but unfortunately they don't taste that good. Pumpkin goat cheese pizza was however pretty decent. Nice ambience though.

Overall the food was not very outstanding, but the price is fare for what we paid for. Service was quite nice and friendly. Big indoor area and spacious seating, great for big group of people.
Good Food Good Mood
We headed to Temperance for a birthday which was conveniently reachable my public transport post work. It’s on the nicer scale of pubs and the menu covers classics like parmas and pizzas items but also some interesting dishes with an international influence like tandoori prawns skewers and steamed bao buns. My friend was also pleased to see variety of salads (I was going to town on calories that day).
Many in the group took up the $15 steak and pot offer and they have such deals every weeknight which makes for a cheap meal. I really enjoyed the food and modern fit out of the space. It had quite a summery vibe and I can see how it would be the perfect location for a lazy Sunday session. Good find

Love this place! A huge group of us came for drinks on a Saturday night and all had a brilliant time.

The drinks were reasonably priced and the food looked amazing even though I didn't have any myself. Staff were friendly and really quick to clean up and take care of people.

Smoking area is big and well kept and the DJ was brilliant!

Stopped in here on my way to an appt - SO glad I did! Beautiful interior, very cosy with a warm fire. Very modern/industrial fit out... very cool. Food was beautiful, service was fantastic. Definitely coming back :)

more like a British pub the place is big with okaish music and good collection of liquor i god a good deal of chicken loaded with cheese bread french fries and salad, all that with a glass of beer at 15AUS$ was a steal, i couldn't eat which means 2 people can easily grab that

i felt there was not enough warmth and soul, however i was alone if you are with a special friend or friends than you must visit the place, and i recommend that you should take the waiter or waitress to get you more information of what you must order.

if you see that dish its heavy
Pjq
Food was delicious and service generally very good except for one rather sullen female bartender who clearly knew very little about spirits and even almost argued with us regarding the spirit we wanted to order. Also we were overcharged for a bottle of wine we didn't order, but I did not notice this until I had got home. This may have been a genuine mistake, but was still disappointing.

It's been a while since I've been here, Saturday night just popped in for a couple drinks. After getting past the abrupt and rude bouncer we entered in to Temperance and it really is a funky and happening place. We arrived quite late so the scene had changed from restaurant to a clubby type of scene. Music was good and I could of quite easily stayed on if I didn't have to get home at a reasonable time. Espresso martinis were spot on and my champers hit the spot too. I did notice a little back area for private functions, this looked very inviting and a great spot if you wanted to have a birthday or occasion here.
Timinmelbourne
Came here for post dinner drinks and earlier in the night the place was reasonably quiet. When we came back the place was rocking!

I had a coffee martini which was very average. It watery and it didn't really hit the mark for me. Even more disappointing as we had to wait about 10 mins for someone out the back to make them

My next drink was a craft beer, can't recall the name but it was better than the martini lol

The music was great, the crowd really mixed. All different ages but the place was packed and the music tooo loud ... I must be getting to that age haha but it was seriously pumping!!

Overall this place was ok and I'd go back, but not on a Saturday night lol

With Simmyeats.Melb

Steak night at the Temperance Hotel is a delicious affair. $15 gets you steak, chips, salad and a glass of wine. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Great atmosphere, service and food. Will be back.

I came by for their lunch specials and tried the fish and chips. It looked impressive and the chips and sauce serving size was great. The fish batter itself was quite deceiving and underneath was a small piece of fish. It was a lot cheaper than the rest of the menu though so maybe that's why the serving size was like that. I enjoyed the salad accompaniment. The parmas were big but we've had bigger ones here. It was a little dissapointing and within half an hour of eating we all felt a little unwell. The staff were cheery and friendly though!

What a lovely place, nice and cozy with friendly staff. Only here just for the burgers on Thursday, the burger is always nice and flavourful.
Foodyfan
Came here looking for a decent pub steak. Paid $36 for the 300gm Scotch Fillet, not a ridiculous price for steak. Cutlery arrived (no steak knife) was told they only have one type of knife. This wouldn't be an issue if the steak was tender enough to cut, but instead I hacked my way through half of it. Masticated like a cow trying to get through the fat and sinew and gave up after quarter of it. Had garlic butter that I'm fairly certain they'd forgotten to put the garlic in, and the thrice cooked chips were hard in the middle. Friendly waitress was the only reason I've given this a two, and my mate enjoyed his Parma. If it's a drink you want go for it, if you're after a steak keep walking! Worst I've had in a long time.
Jean
Temperance Hotel is definitely the place to go to if you are a 'specials' kinda person. The Parma is usually the best of that deal but mostly the steak holds up quite well also. They are very proficient at making a delicious pasta dish and the setting is really nice, mixing some industrial elements with glam. Possibly the nicest looking 'pub' I have ever been to. The service is mostly okay but prepare to wait if they are busy.
Paul
Really awesome outdoor area. Great staff. Great weekly deals. Have gotten to know this pub quite well over the past year and definitely rate it. It feels like a local pub should.
Lancelthebard
Very hard to judge this place indeed - It has the upbeat and downfall, and the U-curve is steep!

Good news might come first:
Chickpea Falafel and Fried Calamari are nice. Salmon with pea purée isn't bad either. If you must order, the Brownie are impressive.

Bad news however:
The steaks are seriously flawed. Three serves of our steaks are all chewy and tough. (Not over-cook however, the inner centres are red enough so must be the quality of the meat) It really doesn't help when we have to paid full price of $30+ per dish over the weekend.
The cheese platter has some disarrangements too. The cheddar must be stored with the blue cheese, because clearly blue mould is starting to grow on its surface. It certainly tastes like blue too!

Overall, it is a long wait .... about 45 minutes till our entree arrived. Yet the establishment was flooding with people so wait was expected.

Friday lunch on Chapel St- order meal and drinks st the bar and they bring them to you. Sit outside on Chapel St, inside or out the back in a grassy area in the beer garden. Plenty of drinks on offer of course but the food was surprisingly the same. Specials and cheap meals as well as a la carte. We chose the salmon with greens, fennel and dressing as well as chimichurri chicken on cous cous. Both were very well presented and tasted delicious- fresh and cooked to perfection. The only fault was that the meals took quite a while to arrive even on a relatively quiet lunch service. Apart from that we had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch and will be back.

Had my birthday here just last week!
For free I got drink cards and a section booked for myself... I thought that was so good!! The music wasn't fantastic unfortunately but I guess that was self imposed (I'm more into groovy, disco, techno) but the mainstream was still fun!
I kept coming back for drinks (before my birthday) because I loved the venue, and the staff were always nice!
The place is huge!! Didn't even realize there was a smokers section inside until my birthday!! Great place to catch up with mates and have a drink. Never eaten here though!! This review is purely for the dranks and environment!

Awwww I loved this place. Awesome vibe. Delicious food and live music to every song you can think of. A definite must be! It's quaint, vibey and full of atmosphere. I am soooo coming back x

$15 steak with a pot of blonde. Special Monday, Tuesday's! Lovely feed, steak juicy and full of flavor. Chips had chicken seasoning. Friendly staff, was a great venue to watch it pour outside while all toastie and warm smashing a steak!

Last night I visited the temperance hotel and I am sad to say I was disappointed from the start. We had booked at table for steak night with a bit of excitement. When I arrived I said to one of the waitresses we had a table booked, she cut me off and said she'd be right back in sec. I get it, they're busy. But were they? I looked over, several tables are empty and she was shuffling around a few glasses on tables and went behind the bar. When I decided she had definitely forgotten about me I asked one of the bar men who pointed us to the table. Anywho, she asked for our drink orders before giving us the menus, then when we did order I asked what the house wine (included with the steak night special) she said it was Shiraz. Fair enough. Weird there was no white though, she then took another of my friends orders and reminded her that she can get a drink of her choice - beer, soft drink, red or white wine. Come on! When the meals arrived in a timely manner (that was so far the only good thing) they all looked pretty good. I asked for some mustard, she said what sort, I said australian? She said sure. She came back with it, it didn't look right. I gave her the benefit of the doubt though. Sure enough it was hot English mustard. Lucky I don't mind hot mustard. But for someone who doesn't there is a MASSIVE difference between the two and you could certainly blow your head off if the latter wasn't your thing. Overall the steak was okay, I asked for medium taking my chance it wouldn't be, it came out medium rare. It was a little chewy but the red wine jus was nice. Overall I think the service was a bit of disaster, I get its, it's a pub, and it's not supposed to be super fancy or high class etc but confusing two distinctly different mustards is just really damn annoying, and very dangerous if you can't handle it!

Often pop down to temperance for lunch, nice venue with a great layout (except the toilets on the top floor)
Venue has a lovely design.
Great attentive staff with a variety of dishes to suit most people.
The burger needs some work but the pumpkin pasta with chorizo is delish...
Will return due to share consistency and convenience ......

This is most definitely a fabulous place to chill in the sun with a drink with friends - they have a great drinks list and an enviable spot on Chapel Street. Lots of outdoor seating and in Summer the bi-fold doors open for a breezy lunch spot. Lots of deals in the week as well so check out the deals on the board out front!

Dinner here was absolutely enjoyable. Our waitress was extra attentive without being pushy which made me really feel at home. We unknowingly arrived just ten minutes before the kitchen closed and nonetheless the staff eagerly took our order and delivered absolutely delicious food!
World In A Bite
Good wine, alright atmosphere but the foods were so bad! The meatballs were tasteless and c'mon this is $16 with a hotdog bun!?? What a waste of money 😡.. The pizza was bland... The French rose was good , that's all! 😤
Tess Speldewinde
My boyfriend and I decided to have an early dinner tonight. I was looking forward to a "pub" meal and a $10 cocktail (which I might just add was actually not bad!)
However the food was extremely disappointing. The margarita pizza was store bough tomato paste with chopped up cherry tomatoes with the tiniest amount of cheese. And the beetroot salad was just as disappointing! The pumpkin was raw, the beetroot was tasteless and don't get me started on the tiny crumb of "goats cheese". There was no flavour what so ever!!

Overall it was an expensive, tasteless meal and I shall only return for the $10 cocktails!

We went to temperance hotel for a late lunch on Sunday afternoon. It was really quiet as we were the only customers. Yet, the wait was realllllllllly long! And when the food finally arrived it was not amazing and so not worth the wait.

Cocktail night on Thursdays. Great pub on the Chapel Street strip. We enjoyed the night good food , decor and atmosphere. A good option to eat or have a pre or post dinner drink.

The atmosphere was quite nice and warm in the venue although we did have to move seats because we were initially seated near a window and it was freezing, we ended up moving tables to near the fire place. The food was great and the portions size were large however the biggest issue we had was that my partner was feeling unwell so we asked if we could take the pizza home as only one slice had been eaten and the manager came over and said they did not have a license to allow food to be taken of the premises, they did not choose to offer any alternative or suggestion but that we were to leave the uneaten pizza to be wasted and that we were to pay for it which was extremely disappointing.

Accidentally ended up here recently when the rain forced us indoors before we had reached our target dinner destination. Glad it did.
For us the Temperance has always been an excellent place for a drink on the weekend (and during the week for more committed)- usually buzzing with the sounds and sights of the sexy under 30s crowd. What we didn't know was the food was so good.
We were seated in a booth (I do prefer the term "bonket" as it alludes to possibility), and waited on by potentially one of the most pleasant and obliging young men I've ever encountered. We ordered what we thought was enough for two and were glad when a friend arrived unexpectedly to join us as the servings were very generous. That's not to say the food was typical pub-fare in anyway. The menu and the entire attitude here is sophisticated but casual. A couple of bottles of prosecco and a red later we were all somehow less offended by the hideous weather when we stumbled out. Excellent.

Top service and great meal. Couldn't fault this place. Yum!

Food is bland with very little good things on offer. My partners was also lacking flavour. Wouldn't rush back

Bad tasting food is one thing, but finding TWO dead flies in my food is not great! Everyone else didn't think much of there food, I would avoid.

The bar tender made fun of my shirt :(
Stuck In Transit
Located in the heart of Chapel Street, Temperance Hotel is where you will find the younger sleek crowd, where Victorian meets modern flare. I’ve been here on a few separate occasions for cocktails; however this was our first time here for food. I must admit their cocktails are amazing, so wasn’t sure what to expect as far as the food went. FOOD The style of food is pub food with a bit of a twist. Everything from shared plates to pizza to duck can be found on the menu. I went with the ‘Spiced Crumbed Chicken Breast’ served with grilled corn, broccolini and wet fries. The chicken was tender and juicy with a thin crust and just the right amount of spice. Broccolini and corn were both cooked perfectly with the slightest crunch. MC ordered the Wednesday special, ‘Chicken Parma’ with chips, salad and a pot of beer. Portion size was quite generous for only $15. I find the Temperance Hotel to be more of an upscale bar than most of the other bars and pubs along Chapel Street.
Steak Me Out
For what it was, it was overpriced and left us feeling disappointed; a shame as the Temperance Hotel is a really pleasant venue.
Eddie
I won’t be heading back to Temperance hotel for a drink anytime soon.
Jenny L
The lemon pepper calamari is the best I have ever had – The calamari is fresh and tender, with no hint of chewiness at all and it was so surprisingly flavorsome.
Catherine
Bad dinner. Went to the temperance for dinner before heading to the cinema. We've been before and enjoyed listening to great music with a few drinks. Dinner on the other hand was a huge disappointment. I ordered the chicken parma and my boyfriend the spicy crumbed chicken. My chips were really cold and the chicken was overcooked. My boyfriends chicken was bland with burnt brocollini and terrible fries. We left most of out dinner and unfortunately won't be back

Cool, trendy looking place but I didn't love the menu and found a lot of it to deep fried.

Good Location Good Food. Came here with a group of people together. I think everyone was happy with its tasty food, nice drinks, cool interior decoration, and also the good service. Highly recommended for people who work nearby or just love Chapel St.

LIKE!. Took our team here yesterday for a Monday lunchtime treat and really impressed with the service and menu offering. The quality and range of food we were able to pick from for a Monday lunchtime was fantastic and it came out in good time. Love the little touches they also do to make you feel really welcome and comfortable. Great spot for really tasty food, quality drinks and an all round good time!

A Culinary Delight to spark the senses!. For the first time in ages I actually looked at the menu and wanted to eat/try EVERYTHING!! Being with a group we all ordered 1 item and then shared, what a treat! Highly recommend the soft shell crab tortillas! Great service and atmosphere. *Hat Tip* to The Temperance. We'll be back for more lunchtime visits.
Rowena
Well looked after. The menu was eclectic, but I went with a group and we all shared mains - there wasn't a dud in the mix. All delicious, all hot, all came out at once. The service was fantastic and we were really well looked after by the staff. I'm very particular about my tap beers, and the beer is great as well. Highly recommended - good vibe, very good food, fresh beer and excellent services.
Michael Grusling
Went there last night the service was good but food was shocking , got the ribs and the crumb around it was bearly cooked
Ed
Looks like a nice enough place until we got to the bar and were met with indifferent staff bristling with attitude. If it's too difficult to smile, ask and enunciate, the poor things must have such a terrible time getting through life.
Elizabeth Bassilios
Menu looks great, a lot of variety and very funky atmosphere. We ordered the tasting platter which had pork sliders, cheese and bacon croquettes, pork belly and aranchini like balls. The porkbelly and the croquettes were quite good-croquettes were very tasty. The pork however in the sliders was quite dry and lacked flavour, the bread seemed a bit stale too. The aranchini balls had an odd almost wasabi after taste. Overall though quite a cool place, lovely staff and a nice quiet booth area if you're wanting somewhere a bit more quiet.
Jacqui
Really great pub meals and the service was excellent.

Great cocktails and great food!. Love coming here on Thursdays for the 2 for 1 cocktails! They are really delicious - especially the Chuppatini!

Pizza's are really good and really cheap as well!! The vegetarian one being my favourite!

Great chilled back atmosphere on the weekend - good place for catch up with friends where you can sit back and relax with good food and drinks!
Laura
Great steak and parmas. Great steak deal on Tuesday. Bargain $15 for a great steak, chips and glass of vino. Difficult to get a table, it's a big place but not much seating- but will still be back for sure.
Trudes
Pizza deal was well worth it. Nice thin bases and a good glutton free option. Toppings were nice and not too much or too little. Could have had a richer tomato paste on the salami pizza option. Great fire and we were there early when it wasn't busy.nice to have kitchen going early, around 5. Vege side with butter was a good mix of veges and still with some crispness to them.
Geoff Germantis
Service was good and friendly, food was delicious, prawns were perfect. The chocolate suflee was first class 9/10 will come again
Kelly
Dinner for 5-7. Service and food was good. DJ comes on at 9pm Friday nights and can get crowded. Function rooms are well decorated with private bar. Can get a little rough with fights/drunk people. Drinks menu had ants on inner pages, not impressed.
Overall: Food 8, Price 7.5, Service 7.5
Epicurean Of Southbank
Decent enough. Not such a bad place to turn up to and have some pints on Chapel Street. The steak I had was a bit overpriced for what I got however it had a decent ambiance and made for a good escape from the shopping strip. Not a sports bar, but more of a haven for those wearing ties from the office buildings.
Mark
Always come here for the standout calamari. Can't be beaten, and nice environment to spend a few hours on a sunny arvo

Came all the way from Sydney. Turned up with two locals at 10 pm on a Friday for a few drinks. We had four well dressed approx 30 yr old males and one female. The bulky bouncer on the door would only let one male in and told us to "find some more females". Avoid this place plenty of less pretentious (and can find there own girls) further down the street.
Dizzy
Best chocolate souffle. The beef and chicken salad were quite nice...however, there was only a small amount of meat on the plate. The pizza was very nice too. The watiress was absolutely beautiful...she suggested the chocolate souffle, which was delicious!! One of the best ones I've had. Would definitely go back again.
Ryan Anderson-Smith
Rude service with ZERO personality.

Nice saturday arvo drinks. Nice enough pub for a few arvo pints - haven't sampled the food yet but i'd go back
Elmmar
Cheap pizza and its yumm!!. I love the places that have cheap wine and pizza on weekdays.. but actually good! Temperance hotel is nothing special and yes it is a pub full of stilettos and fake tan but man can you dance your a** off to the Sat night Dj. Its the local wat-everrr place to go to. Everybody needs a temperance

Xx
Bethany
The service was impeccable, the staff were awesome. And the girl making cocktails was fast and explained our drinks to the detail. The young man behind the bar was friendly and most helpful. The food was also delicious. Will defiantly return again.
Kelly
Fantastic pizza. A group of friends and I shared a few pizzas - they were hands down the best pizzas I've had in ages!
Melbgal81
Nice & helpful staff, great prices. We had a large group of 15 or so, arrived about 7pm or just before (with booking), our table had the calimari, chips, pizzas and a burger.. everyone really enjoyed it all, I especially love the thin bases on the pizza! After eating, a few drinks & the tables are removed to allow for more people, the dj started up, lighting change & the place transforms to a lounge/bar feel. Upstairs in the lounge old school rnb and dance songs were fun to dance to, with more modern house/dance commercial downstairs. Great Saturday night! Will go again
VAprincess
Good pizza. I had the pumkin, fetta and proscuitto pizza. It was lovely, nice thin base and proscuitto nice and crispy - just not enough of it! It was a wee bit expensive for what it was ($16) but thats Chapel St for you! Nice place to settle in for the afternoon and watch the posers and tossers go by.
C Mac
We booked on the door list for a sat night. Arrived at 8.30 to a almost empty bar only to be turned away for having to many of us (about 20) we where on the list and told them what time we would be arriving. The excuse was flimsy blaming it on the staff member who took our booking. There attitude was terrible never again will me or friends visit this establishment.
A.Peach
Don't understand the negativity.
Perhaps people dont realise it's still basically a pub with food. Have had many great experiences from great staff who are happy to help, and great food. Would much rather eat here than the 2 restaurants opposite.
Outandabout
Very snooty bar tender and it wasn't even busy. Really nice fit out though. Would be good to have live music on an arvo to entice you in because at moment not much on offer
Isabel Santoso
Calamari!!. Best salt&pepper calamari in Melbourne
