Review The Mill House - Melbourne

Came here with my colleagues which was great - amazing food, decor/drinks all top notch. Would love to visit again.

I visited this place several times, sometimes with my partner or friends, and even with my parents as well. I always feel nice atmosphere here, It’s perfect to drink and chat. The music sounds might be loud but It wasn’t problem. I love a jug of mojito and some cocktails here. Staffs are nice and kind. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Best experienced at lunch times before the after work crowd. Food and Gin have always been on point. Staff are always inviting during off peak periods. One of my favourite finds in the CBD.

Because of 50% of food bill so I have a chance to visit this place. Food was very average. Had pizza which was not very tasty, pork loin was super dry. It’s a place if you go with mates for sitting down and chatting. But if you are a food lover I might not suggest the place for dining.

Came here with a small group of friends for Friday night drinks and I would absolutely go again. If you love gin, this is the place for you! Yummy drinks and awesome decor, the staff just add to the atmosphere really nicely. Please keep up the good work and we'll be seeing you soon

Nice venue and drinks but the music was so loud you couldn't talk. Despite the loud music It wasn't a place for dancing or anything like that. Seems great for the socially awkward who want to sit in silence listening to loud pounding music.

An awesome laneway bar in Little Flinders! Amazing cocktails and if you love gin, you are gonna love this place! More gin than god!! The food we all had was tastelicious!! And the service was friendly with smile, knowledgeable and profesional. We will all be back soon for another fun night!

I liked the white rabbit dark ale(a naming contradiction). I also had the cheeseburger and added the sweet potato chips as well. Very tasty. Atmosphere is good, free wifi is helpful.

3.5 Good

Came here during lunch and it was still empty, therefore we had free reign on the venue so we grabbed a well sought after booth. They had a decent selection of beers and I settled for a Stomping Grounds Crosstown XPA, very hoppy with a fruity melon taste.

They’ve got daily specials and as we came on a Tuesday they had Peruvian fried chicken and a wide selection of gins available at discounted prices. I obviously had to try the chicken which came in a bucket and served with a bit of chilli mayo. The unsectioned chicken wings itself were not battered and did lose some of its juiciness. It was lightly seasoned and really did need the sauce to give it that bump.

Most of the tables were ordering burgers and my friend quite enjoyed his. This place would go off for afterwork drinks.

Came here on a Friday night for an after dinner drink. It was super busy, with a mixed age group and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

It's a large space, with a central bar area. The drinks were good, and staff were friendly and knowledgeable about their drinks list. The music wasn't really my taste, otherwise we would have stayed around longer. Overall, the Mill House wasn't a bad bar, and I would like to come back earlier for happy hour to see if the vibe is different then.

Been coming here for a while, the food is tasty and the vibe is good. Have never had any issues with the food, had the mushroom burger which was nice and also tried the beef burger from my partner!
Echooooooo
Came here for drink
But found out the pizza was surprisingly tasty.
Can’t remember other thing. Cause it was so packed and popular for after work drinks. Obviously.
Jennie
Great bar, i know it gets packed during the evenings but it's also worth visiting during the day as it's nice and spacious and less of a wait for your food.
Burgerman77
The accommodated well for a large group. The vibe inside the Mill house was great, the staff were friendly, the service was quick and the happy hour was excellent!
Good Food Good Mood
We came to Millhouse for a pre Xmas party drink last night and were suitably impressed. This is a great space with a well stocked bar. Coincidentally it was their third birthday celebrations which had everyone in party mode so the atmosphere was buzzing. Great spot for post work drinks

Not the first option in the list but yes a saviour for sure. DJ may get cold at times but rest of the staff always is ready to make you feel special.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: Been here a few time for drinks on a Friday night and it goes off - however I finally had a chance to try their dinner menu here and the ambience is completely different on a Thursday.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I tried the roast lamb with grilled potatoes and it smelled delicious. The potatoes were roasted well. The burger was also very delicious.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: they gave us the option to have sweet potato fries with the burger - now I have ordered it separately before and it’s amazing but the ones that came with the chips were soggy and oily and cold! Not ideal.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: A great place for drinks but for the price of their meals I’d expect more consistent quality.

We went to the Mill House for a work party, so got a try a bit of all the finger food including pizza, aranchini and popcorn chicken. There were bag hooks under the bar which was pretty cool. It's underground on Flinders Lane, a bit loud and dark (terrible for photos) but they do serve fun mocktails on request.

the cocktails were really good n i had the cheese burger, its better than what i expected!! not too loud on a weekday night, quite enjoyable.
Dine And Dash
Came here before a dinner reservation with a friend.

The Mill House has an amazing vibe when you walk down the stairs - absolutely buzzing and loud music. The venue is large and dark but has a lot of tables and places to sit.

We only ordered a cocktail each, and we both ordered the Tardy to the Party which came with Moonshine, Raspberry Schnapps and Sours. It was absolutely delicious! Probably one of the greatest cocktails I've ever had.
Little Bit Of Everything
Was here for a friends birthday drinks. Pretty spacious so it’s just perfect for big groups of people to catch up over drinks and food. They have beers on tap and very generous with their portions for any meal. It gets pretty loud and busy on Friday and weekends.
Friendly staff and great service.

Cool atmosphere, good music and an excellent vibe. Chicken burger with beer battered fries and a pint of beer was a most excellent way to start the evening

Gin & tonics at The Mill House! Ambiance good. Music is the right volume. Yummy Kumara fries! I like the vibe of this place and awesome Happy Hour.

Terrible. Went here for a few quiet xmas catchup drinks with a couple of friends from 10pm on 12/12/17. 11pm we buy a drink each. 11.10pm we are suddenly told they are "closed" and we have to leave. No warning, no calls of last drinks. $35-worth of half-finished drinks are left on the table. The staff were very rude about it too - "We're closed - you have to go now". A quick check of the website says they are supposed to be open until 12 - the staff clearly wanted an early night. Won't be coming back. Bad experience.

What goes from being a white collar after work drinker become a chilled out place to take advantage of good meal specials during the week. Their chicken buckets are fantastic.
Flying Forward
Points for: large space, central location

It's a basement bar, so it's pretty dark inside - no natural light but there is loads of space.
The happy hour doesn't run for too long (4pm - 6pm), and even then it's not as cheap as some ($7.50 basics).
It does get pretty busy after work though, and the music also gets pretty loud toward the back, to the point you have to strain your voice to talk.
The food will get you by while you drink - it's a typical bar menu, and executed as expected.
The pizza comes out as a rectangle and the base will get floppy quite quickly.
Fried chicken is still a little oily (I get that it's fried), and are pieces of wings and drummettes.
Good Food, Good Mood
Love this new bar, suitable for after work drinks or to hear awesome artists play live music!! Happy hour specials are always a bonus, especially in CBD where it’s competitive. It does get busy though, so make sure you make a reservation for big groups. Haven’t tried many of the food dishes, just the poutine.

Pretty cool bar for Friday night drinks in the city. Booths line one side of the space, a big bar in the middle and a really large space too, which is great if you’re going with a big group. Cool music, great atmosphere.

This place is absolutely buzzing, we visited on a wednesday night for dinner and the after work crowd
limited vegetarian options but halloumi burger was tasty
good cocktail selection

I had an incredibly awful and traumatising experience with this place. I went here with a big group of friends and, unaware of any cloak room, my friends and I left our bags in a sort of a pile under a table. Later, when I returned to grab my bag, I found that it wasn't there. It had my wallet and keys and phone in it. I asked staff and none of them said they had any awareness of a missing bag. One said that they'd checked lost property. I gave them my name and my mum's phone number in case. Anyway, just over 24 hours later, my mum got a call saying that they HAD found the bag all along and it was in a different lost property room. It just seems very strange and suss that they would take my bag to put in lost property when there were bags lying around EVERYWHERE, and then apparently not know where they keep their lost property. You would think a bar without a cloak room that clears away people's bags would remember where they kept the bags they picked up. Anyway, some of the staff were nice but I've never had an experience like that at any other bar so I have to say one star.
Daniel
The burgers and rolls were slightly too small for the price you pay, but it tasted amazing. The serving size of the main dishes were generous, with fresh ingredients. The staff were courteous, and showed us to our table.
Lena
The Mill House always provides a good atmosphere for upbeat conversation and good times with friends. The music there is always good, and it would be preferred if the dance floor was always cleared so there was room to dance. The cocktail menu is interesting and innovative, and the food menu is a typical bar menu; snacks and burgers. Good for knock off drinks or drinks around 11pm on a Thursday.
NorthMorris1
Interesting hidden underground bar with really good vibes and a well planned layout. Staff are friendly and service was fast. The menu, both food and drinks, had a wide range of options and flavours that you don't see at many other bars. I recommend if you're looking for a place to go for a drink in the city!

This place is in the city and is uber cool. They just opened last year and already people love the entertainment. Here you order at the bar. As I had booked on Dimmi I got a bar tab card which I did not know about and they should have told me when I made the booking. As usual I don't bring ID and some people don't. Luckily they were apologetic about this and they let me pay straightaway. Or otherwise I would have to wait a while.

One of the managers (if that's what he is) could have handled a situation a lot better if he lost the attitude and treated his customers with respect. Seemed like he had a pole up the proverbial and wanted to pick an argument - with me, a customer! It's not my fault that the bar is designed in a way that means my friends and I were sitting and standing in an area that is also the staff walkway.

Came here for a few drinks with friends. Really loved this place. There was an excellent selection of drinks which were all very tasty. It has amazing atmosphere and the staff were all lovely and attentive. Will be back.

Was walking past this place and my sister in law saw the sign saying "$20 sangria" (by the way this was on a Saturday afternoon) and we were like YES WE ARE GOING HERE !!
Instantly fell in love with this cute little bar! We had tasty sangria and a share plate between us! The music was the main thing that got me, so funky!!!! Will definitely come here again!

The Mill House is a pub located on Flinders Lane below ground, with different daily specials for lunch, and Friday/Saturdays for drinks. On Wednesday’s, The Mill House has a cheap $12 special for burgers with beer battered fries. I ordered the Mill House Beef Burger, the patty was juicy between two buns that were on the drier side so it didn’t leave a greasy feeling. Chips were done perfectly and food also came out timely. With the competitive daily specials prices compared to the cafes around this area, I’ll definitely be back to try the Peruvian Fried Chicken and Fish and Chips, a Tuesday and Thursday special.
The City Lane
The Mill House is located in a heritage building in Melbourne’s CBD dating back to 1851. The building has been through many incarnations over the years (the name comes from the fact that the building originally housed a grain mill, sorry Simpsons fans) but for a little over a year now the basement level has been occupied by The Mill House.

We stumbled upon The Mill House by chance and we were really impressed by the knowledgeable staff and friendly service. We had the lamb salad and beef brisket and both were fantastic. I'll be coming back for after work drinks for sure

Came down here for a weekend at the recommendation of a friend in Melbourne and was not dissapointed. Great service, food and drink selection. Had the Peking duck pizza and pork belly to share. Generous servings with lots of flavours. Beer selection was good and well priced. DJ on Friday nights is awesome - definitely worth checking out!

Friend of mine knew about this place and took me in for good Ol' tap beer and a fish burger for $12. Delightful service, very friendly. The burger and beer battered chips arrive quickly. The bun. Oily and burnt, the fish however was moist, and the chips were crispy. Will be back with the misses !

I have been here a few times and it is always packed and buzzing! The venue attracts nice clientele by delivering a good selection of drinks at reasonable prices. I came here for a nightcap - the service was very friendly at the bar and my $12 espresso martini went down a treat on a Friday night. The music is quite loud and the venue does not offer much in terms of seating unless you make a booking, but it is very much a happening place and perfect for casual drinks.

Came here for lunch on a Wednesday with the office. The space is warm and inviting, and much larger than what you'd expect. A really nice fitout and ambience.

Got the lunch special for the day which was burgers + chips (choice of chicken, fish, and beef). For $12 (regular price $16) it was a darn good meal! The burger was fresh and relatively light (none of the greasy monstrosities here). An interesting sauce with a hint of star anise, coupled with the avocado and shredded red cabbage made this burger a unique surprise. Beer-battered chips were also well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Thumbs up. Would be happy to come back.

Disappointing!
Went for my bday and had some bar vouchers! Vouchers accepted at the time of ordering and able to use this on both food and drinks, however food didn't arrive! Waited over an hour and then queried with staff, advised order was not made, even though a receipt was shown! Staff advised the kitchen was now closed and we would be given a substitute meal instead. This meal also didn't arrive! Won't return, staff had no clue and vibe was jacked and DJ doesn't take requests!
Located on Flinders Lane, Mill House is the place to be on a Saturday night!
Awesome vibe, decor and live DJ. If you looking for a place to hit for dinner/drinks before heading to the club then I would totally recommend this place.

The staff here are also super friendly. Kitchen closes at 10pm so make sure to order food before then. They also have specials on for each day so make sure to check out their website!!
The service is also very quick which was surprising especially on a Saturday night.

Saturday's you can order jug of Sangria's for flat $20.00.

Found out about this venue after we were handed a promo card outside Flinder st station and decided to check it out.

From the outside, then venue is very deceiving as its on flinders lane and it looks like it would be quite small however as soon as you walk in and head down the double stairs, you realise how large this venue actually is. Probably one of the biggest underground bars I've seen in Melbourne.

Although we arrived at lunchtime to grab aim food, the venue was actually pretty empty which was a surprise. We decided to try a little bit of everything so we ordered the shared tasting place, a side of chips and a bucket of the fried chicken along with a few cold bevs!

The staff were very friendly and the service was also very quick but that's because it wasn't that busy. The chicken was amazing, although some smaller pieces were a little dry majority of the chicken was cooked week and had a nice tangy taste to it which went well with the sauces. The chips were also nice, thick cut chips with good salt and a good serving size for two.
The croquettes were one of our favourite dishes on the shared platter along with the beef empanadas, the gyoza felt a little over cooked and were cold.

All in all, this is a good lunch spot and can only imagine would be an amazing after work drinks spot that we will have to check out. The fries chicken is a must!
Kate
What a lovely bar to find! Fantastic menu, great staff, lovely decor and lighting. This is a place for all different types. Sangria was also divine- can't go wrong!
Tom
Wanna listen to good music? Need an after work drink? Wanna get absolutely smashed for cheap? This is the place. Order the beer in a massive jar!

I absolutely love how the service here was excellent and perhaps it was because it was a quiet night that they were able to pay attention to us. They were very attentive and organized and already had a set menu set for us! I loved how we walked in and how they put in a pretty decor that the table was reserved for Cathy. Overall, the food and the drinks were okay. They were very appealing to our eyes, especially that sangria loaded with lots of pretty flowers!! My favourite dish has got to be the king fish and the squid. They did the condiments so delicious. The dessert was a bit of a let down though.. I don't think the quinoa or the mint went well with the sauce, although sauce tasted amazing. The night was pretty good. I enjoyed my friends company and it felt very cosy.
Gino
My recommendation is to come for a drink and maybe a snack. Not so much a sit down meal. Don't get me wrong though it's a great bar. Staff know how to make an awesome cocktail.
Avolette
Great atmosphere on a Friday night at this downstairs bar! Lots of seating, relatively quick service, yummy cocktails! The music was also quite good- including some old school beats. Fantastic place for some after work drinks!
Gee
Maybe it's more of a bar than a good food venue. Fairly uninspiring pizza and overly soggy and flat sweet potato chips. Nice fitout to the place. Probably worth going to drink only.

When someone says ‘basement bar’, I certainly don’t think of an elegant, lush space, with lots of wood and plush leather booths. Yet that’s what the Mill House has somehow managed to do, and believe me, I had been here for a gig prior to it’s reinterpretation as the Mill House…and it’s quite a change from barren concrete walls and sticky floors.

If you go and have a look at The Mill House Instagram you will see not so long ago this was a mere shell, a ripped out space with just the walls standing and the transformation into the cosy bar it is today is pretty impressive. You come to the top of the stairs on the street and you can’t really see what is happening down in The Mill House but head on down and you’ll be greeted by subtle lighting, cosy booths, big wooden tables and a cracking DJ pumping out those tunes to make you shake that ass!

Went to The Mill House for after work drinks on Friday night and it was absolutely packed! Despite the crowds I really enjoyed the vibe. The music is great fun and happy hour from 4-6pm on Fridays is worth a visit. The food was also tasty and reasonably priced. I had the lamb salad with hummus, rocket and cherry tomatoes and a couple of friends tried the pizzas. Be sure to sample some of their 'moonshine' too - the blackcurrant with soda was a great combo.

We enjoyed the recent Time Out Melbourne Food Awards and now the nominees for the 2016 Time Out Melbourne Bar Awards have been announced. With eleven categories running for the fourth year of the awards, winners will be revealed in a ceremony on Monday 7 December at The Mill House in Flinders Lane.

Came across this one upon leaving Zomp next door and decided it was time to stop for a drink. Looking at the drinks menu, there was a good range of beers, wines and spirits. Ordered a cocktail which I realised after ordering had lager in it. I'm not a beer drinker but was pleasantly surprised on tasting the drink. The cocktail was presented in a maison jar with an upturned beer bottle. My companion opted for beers but then decided to be brave and have a shot of the strongest moonshine. Boy did it pack a punch. Loved the moonshine idea as haven't seen it anywhere else around Melbourne. Only stayed for a couple of drinks and the venue was just filling up as we departed but would be happy to drink there again as staff very welcoming and decor in keeping with the industrial basement vibe
The City Lane
Situated just down the road from City Library and popular cafe/bar Journel, The Mill House can be found by following a short set of stairs from Flinders Lane. Like many of Melbourne’s basement bars, the bar is a deceptively large space, with the interiors featuring a mix of nautical and smuggling props, the likes of which seem to be in a league all of their own.
Gastrology
The Mill House concept and interior is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Charles and William Degraves, thetwo Melbourne brothers who constructed Tomasetti House in 1851, originally to house a steam flourmill, boiler, and stables. The family name is associated with a rich history full of scandal and deceit, as well as feats of great "industrialism".
