My friends and I walked in here for an impromptu champagne lunch.
We all had a really nice morning. The service was good and the food was nice.
I will be returning.
There used to be lots of great cafes in Rathdowne Village, though sadly over the years, changes of management, closures etc have left only two really good spots and this is one of them in my opinion. Interestingly, this place has actually improved quite a bit over the last 2 years, especially the coffees. The ambience is great, it's a cosy little space, especially the seating area with the fireplace, tucked away from the main entry but with a view to the front. The menu is good if not overly adventurous, the staff are polished and friendly.
Sweet, little place with a tiny squashed seating area but otherwise not too bad. Didn't hate it. I was told the smashed avocado was revolutionary... it was pretty good.

We stumbled across the Depot de Pain on the Queens Birthdays weekend Monday, it's quaint and cosy, in the middle of North Carlton.
The food was to die for, I can't spell it properly but had the Croque Madam, minus the egg and I've never tasted anything like it.
Coffee is great, beautiful teas and lovely staff.
One of my all time favourite brunch places in Melbourne. The staff are all lovely and friendly and after a few visits they always remember your order! I haven't eaten anything I didn't like but personal favourites are the Croque Madame, the rissole sandwich, the ginger peach tea and the flavoured eclairs... but it's all good.
I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast here this morning ( 14/4/16 ). I had the Breakfast Cassoulet, which was hot,tasty and delicious. Service was good and the coffee was good. I'd highly recommend Depot de pain.
Pastries from here are absolutely delicious! The croissants are incredibly flaky and rich. They're very decadent, so it's better to share otherwise they're very filling.

The coffee is quite good, pies are delicious, and desserts and pastries are excellent too.
Most of the staff are awesome and super helpful.

Service was so attentive and friendly, especially when we were sitting out the back where you can often be forgotten. Our French waitress was lovely, and meant for at least an hour or two, we faked siting in France; playing pretend with our pots of tea and light lunches, leaving with baguettes tucked under our arms and getting on our cute bikes to ride on past the Eiffel tower… and then real life interrupted. Oh bother.

Amazing. Came for coffee and cake to depot and straight away it was busy, but the staff we able to help get me a table and when I asked about some of the dishes on the menu the gentleman was very knowledgeable.

The coffee is always good, the staff are superb and friendly with great attitudes - especially the baristas.

My only complaint? The tiny tables. But for such a small space they lay it out well.

Some of the bread isn't that great - the sourdough in particular pails in comparison to that of Noisette or Movida Bakeries. However the coffee, service and most food options more than makes up for this shortfall.
I come here all the time and honestly, they make the best latte. It's smooth, the right temperature and always gives me a great start to any morning. The owner is real nice, and in fact, all the staff are too. You know they're doing something right if they remember your name.
I was craving a hot chocolate and asked the waitress if they made a good one. She said I should have the version made with chocolate cream rather than powder. She was right! Delicious, creamy, with quite a hazelnut taste also. She made a point to stop by and ask how I liked it - nice service :-)
I always enjoy this place. Sitting out the back, mid week, on the big table with the newspapers is a delight
Best croissant I've had in melbourne hands down. Only wish they were in the cbd.
Not bad. They do make a good coffee here, and the croque monsieur is to die for! However, I have been there a few times, both at busy and quieter times, and found it takes a while to get served. Waitresses float around selectively ignoring people and it's often very difficult to catch their eyes. However, once they've noticed you they are very friendly and attentive, so that is just a minor grievance.
Great selection of cakes and pastries, we bought a large cake to cater a party and it was one of the best things we had ever eaten. Can't go past a croissant for breakfast either!

Almond croissants are a finicky thing: they can be a bit wimpy at some places, and traumatisingly sweet at others. I'm pleased to have discovered that the ones here are perfect. Be warned though, you don't get much change from ten bucks for a fairly standard (though admittedly delicious) pastry and coffee

One of my preferred venues for breakfast and coffee, Depot de Pain always puts a smile on my face.
The staff are friendly, the food is awesome and the coffee goes down like velvet.
The goats cheese omelette is mouth watering, especially with a side of spinach and avocado.
The sweets will tempt even the strongest willed, and believe me, they do not disappoint and will satisfy anyone's sweet tooth.

Great coffee. Had Breakfast and totally enjoyed this place. Great staff, very friendly and great service. The coffee was fabulous! We ordered croisants and the omelette for breakast. Very nice thankyou. I would recommend Depot de Pain.
Excellent food, service and prices.. Depot has become one of my favourite cafes. The service is always friendly and helpful, the servings generous (the baguettes are enough for 2 meals/people) and the pastries and cakes are divine. Highly recommend for a great breakfast, brunch or lunch. My favourite is the croque monsieur, although the toast champignons are also extremely good.

Not quite a world of pain. One wonders what the authors of the earlier reviews were on, but whatever it is they can keep amongst themselves.
Faux French? That when Mutu stepped out of Depot de Pain to find himself in Carlton North should have been enough of a reality check that he is in fact not in Paris. One can really only expect a representation of a foreign cuisine in Australia. After all, is Malaysian here really Malaysian and is Thai here really Thai, etc, etc? I think we all know the answer to that.
Pricey? Gosh, where do I begin. You see that humongous tartine photographed by Geocat? Yeah, it's all of $10.50. And the foot-long ham and brie baguette my friend had is also $10.50. And the scrumptious and perfectly toasted croque madame with its perfectly fried egg that I had is $11.50. A French hot dog is $8.00, omelettes and quiches with salads for under $10.00. My, if anything, Depot de Pain is a painful reminder of how other cafes are ripping us off with a $12.00 price tag on a pedestrian veggie and haloumi wrap.
I'm glad I didn't allow those reviews and their numerous recommendations to deter me from visiting Depot de Pain. The food is ethically priced and the service is charming. Coffee could have been stronger. My only other quibble with the place is its very French petite-ness. It seats about 20 people in and about 8 out.
The raspberry clafoutis and the lemon flan were beckoning to me as we paid up and I will certainly be back for the sweets next time. Suburban? If Mutu lives anywhere but suburbia, he wouldn't be complaining of the price.

Excellent. We've been several times now, working our way through the menu. Always impressed- especially the crepes & omelets. Always great service and good coffee. Endearingly coined it 'house of pain'. Also bought beautiful bread to take home, and possibly the best eclair I've ever tried.
LOVE IT!. Sunday i visited Depot de pain for breakfast with my partner, and both of us found the food flawless. I found the food was fresh and bursting with flavour, and my coffee perfect. The staff were incredibly helpful with ordering, suggesting items off the menu for myself and my partner. The atmosphere was fabulous, not overly noisy, yet it has such a great vibe about it. We took two takeaway croissnts (which were fresh and full of flavour). I recommond this cafe to anyone, and would definatly be going back for the third time.....overall VERY happy :)
Nice bread. Opened just over a month ago, Depot is a welcome addition to Rathdowne Street. The beef pie oozes lean tender morsels of beef cooking in rich red wine encased in a deliciously delicate shortcrust pastry. At just $6 (or $9 with a side salad), it leaves you pennies to splurge on yummy things wickedly teasing you in the front display window. The cheese pastry is good, as is the almond croissant. Coffee is the milkier French variety which I found a little weak. The decor is simple with clean lines, though I was hoping for a little more French character and charm.
Between the sweets and the savoury, Depot De Pain has quickly won me over, and I can’t wait for it to open in Brunswick. I just have one last piece of advice for you: Do NOT think about the calories you’re consuming when you go into that place. Just eat. And then exercise, but most importantly eat.
Went for drinks at 4.30 and weren't told it was closing half an hour later. Cute place albeit with kinda odd French historical documents on the law.
they have a great waitress who should be the manager. We were greeted with the best smile and warmth. Amazing professional service while still creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to dine in. Sorry we weren't able to leave a tip! We went back this week and different waitress :( Hope she is still working there. food and drinks also great
Great service, staff are really friendly, good coffee and chocolate (which is always important). Tasty pastries, tarts, cakes, eclairs and other dessert based treat (again - important 😉)

A great range of small and large plates for lunch, coupled with delicious coffee and dessert options. All very reasonably priced. A definite favourite haunt, popular with the hip Carlton crowd.
