😱Lizzie’s first impression: I came here very often a few years ago and I recently came back and it was just as good. It is hidden off an alley way off Bourke st, and is as Melbourne as it gets.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: the thing I love most about is that their is a huge variety of their menu. my favorite thing to order here is their risotto - the arborio rice is cooked al dente and has generous amounts of parmesan on it. I've tried both their porcini risotto and their chicken and mushroom one. Both are great to try. The salad is also very fresh and filling.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy:
It might be a bit cold in the winter as it is open space and you may need to request for seating inside.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great cafe offering a wide selection of foods. Highly recommend.
We stumbled on this place as my cousins and I were in need of some brunch. The rest had the terra-cotta baked eggs which were superb. The open lamb kebab could do with a bit more flavor but it was still quite yummy. The chips and as soooo crispy and stayed crispy throughout the meal. Very happy with the meal here.
Service wise- it was difficult to get the attention of the waitress as we needed more water for the table. That could have been better.
Rise and shine with fried eggs, and a cup of flat white. The spinach was a little bit over cooked but the coffee was very good. The staff was friendly and responsible. The environment was clean, nice and quiet.
Must: Try the amatriciana pasta dish. It is well balanced with its flavour and texture.
Skip: Sitting outside in the cold/heat by taking a set indoors.
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!

I brought my sister here for breakfast she said was so raving about this place for days. She chose the Terracotta pot.it had a lot of flavour and cooked to perfection,
I had the corn fritters they where quiet moist and have lots of herbs over all tasked amazing. The coffee was good the only problem was we had to order two because the waiter walked off before I could confirm they where large ones :-(
Over all it was amazing time here good quality food, waiter can be a little slack but over all it was ok
Breakfast is always great, the atmosphere is the best of the all cafes in this laneway. But the service, the service is exceptional and always outstanding. My regular for breakfast and lunch - definitely recommended
Wide range of choices. We had the Rise & Shine Big Breakfast and the Folded Mediterranean Omelette. Both were cooked perfectly. Asked for poached eggs to still be runny and they were. Service was prompt and friendly, especially on the Sunday morning. So good we have come back again!
Only had the coffee here one day, it was okay and better than expected. Not to be compared with those gourmet coffees you get around the corner.
It was a wow to me , their grilled chicken breast was juicy and full flavor . Very healthy meal with a lot of vegie and sweet potato mash. The waitress was super friendly and coffee was great. Happy to found out this place and will be back for sure ❤️
Went to this little coffee shop after a tiring meeting. Ordered Chicken Parma for lunch. Coffee was served after a few minutes. The Parma was juicy and tasty. It is to die for! Service was quick and friendly. Such a pleasant place for food and relaxing. Highly recommend!
I had one very attentive and helpful waitress when I visited, she did a great job at suggesting food and upselling. Coming back to check on her tables and ensuring everyone had a great experience.
I like the environment and the vibe. The speciality is pasta (just realized that its Italian heritage). We ordered Gnocchi pan fried, and it was really good. My wife order ceasar salads and think she was enjoyed it. The server was super nice.
Its a good place for breakfast, food and coffee are up to the standard. Staffs are very friendly. Its a good place to chill out before shopping!
Nicest food, loveliest place and kindest people ever. Such a nice time! We even received discounts for Melbourne star that the customer before gave to her! So so great. Highly recommend for a quiet, lovely time.
Ordered the Rise and Shine with scrambled eggs and a short black.
The Big Breakfast is a well balanced meal, the scrambled eggs were fluffy but not watery, a beautiful accompaniment to the crispness of the hash-brown and the saltiness of the bacon. The spiced sausage was a questionable choice for the dish - it did not add to the cohesiveness of the meal. The shining centrepiece for me was the grilled tomato - seasoned just right, not too soft or firm, perfectly complemented the spinach and mushrooms. Sourdough toast was too hard for my liking, I would recommend grilling the toast instead of using a toaster for a softer texture.
The coffee here is mediocre though- not bad, but not impressive.
Overall would recommend for a hearty and fulfilling start to any day.
Grasshopper's feast dishes up fine Italian cuisine. The penne amatriciana is a spectacular dish, perfectly spiced and topped off with fine Parmesan cheese. With its friendly service and competitive prices, this gem tucked away quietly along Little Collins St is a must try for the lover of pasta.
Nice place. Pretty simple. Eggs were cooked just right and the coffee wasn't burnt. Fruit toast was a little cold so maybe should be brought when it's ready, not when whole table is ready. I know you're told to wait for all meals, but customers like hot food.
Thank you. See you again.
Enjoyed breakfast here on Saturday morning. Foam on the cappuccinos was satisfactory (needed a little more chocolate dust though) and the food was very nice! Perfectly poached eggs, delicious herbed mushrooms!
Not sure why everywhere seems to insist on a combo of 2 croissant toppings: ham and cheese, or cheese and tomato. Why not ham, cheese AND tomato? One lady on the table wanted that but didn't want to ask.... (they probably would have done it but it'd be better on the menu)..
Waiter with the shaved head is a laugh- good service :)
See you next time.
Been here twice already.. it's defenetly a nice place to catch up with friends while having brunch.. i had the atlantic with side of avocado and mushrooms, it was really good!
A lovely eatery with extremely friendly staff and waiters. Had the prawn and avocado salad for $20 and was pretty pricey for the portion received. Friend ordered a beef burger for $19 that was the size of her palm, but was packed with flavour and worth the money. The indoor herb garden makes a wonderful setting and it's obvious that the ingredients used are healthy and fresh. A nice place to eat, but just a tad pricey.
Have been here a number of times for brunch/lunch mainly for convenience sake. However, our experiences haven't been disappointing. The menu has a good range of dishes, from breakfast favourites to healthy salads. Everything about this places is 'good'- food, service, efficiency, coffee, location. Possibly one of the better places down this side of little collins!
Great full breakfast. With so many choices was happy we landed here for breakfast. Was very satisfied with the full breakfast :)
Polite and friendly staff too
i am very satisfied with my asam seafood :D
Yummy brekkie - We will be back. Visisted here on a work trip and being a cafe in such a central location i suppose it would be easy to be complacent... but not Grasshoppers Feast!
Food and coffee was very fresh, quick and delish. And service was friendly.
Loved it!
D .... Lish!
8/9/16 - back again today. I love this cafe. I like the fact that I'm not hounded when approaching the cafe by staff, to come in. Grass Hoppers Feast is an unassuming cafe but the service is attentive, timely and always appropriate. The food is delicious and that is why I always make a Bee line for this place every time I'm in Melbourne. There are plenty of breakfast options in this town. The Grass Hoppers Feast is definitely one of my favs! Keep up the consistency that has been lasting for years.
Zucchini and corn fritters are too die for! Steak sandwich is also amazing! Love coming with my boyfriend on Saturday mornings and being able to have both! Highly recommend
Always a joy to come into Grasshoppers to enjoy a coffee. Chats with Monica and Shammy always brighten your day !!
Greek lamb salad...yum! Excellent service. We'll be back!
Great breaky had the terracotta pot something different and I would get it again
Perfectly cooked food, super fast service. Would definitely come back
Delicious!. Great breakfast menu - love the zucchini & corn fritters - together with friendly, attentive staff and prompt service make this the perfect pre-shopping treat in the CBD.
Great one!. Good coffee, attentive staff, nice atmosphere and great food. Will be back!
Faultless. Prompt service. Great food. Perfect location. Recommended to all in Melbourne.
Wonderful Cafe. Was out shopping with friends till we came across this cafe in the causeway lane off bourke st mall, was quickly allocated a table drinks & meals was taken & brought to us within minutes. WOW..fastest meals in a busy laneway cafe we have ever had. Highly recommended to anyone & would come back again here.
Trendy lane way cafe that is quiet and comfortable indoor/outdoor feel. Service was prompt and friendly. I ordered a mocha which came hot and strong, my husband had the long macchiato that was strong without being bitter. My zucchini and corn fritters was well presented and a decent serve. The poached egg was perfect, the advocado salsa lemony and the bacon crispy. The fritters were crunchy on the outside and soft within and very tasty - a little dense which meant I couldn't finish all 3. The Spanish omelette presented perfectly with a spicy chorizo, accompanied by 2 croquettes of toast. The salsa was good, but could have had more tomato and less advocado for my taste. A great breakfast that we will return for again.
Great food, coffee was alright, the Indian waitress was very helpfull organizing a table of 8 for us although they were extremely busy , she was Very friendly but the asian chick was rude and moody. Over all food was good and fast..
Great fritters! Good lane w.... Great fritters!
Good lane way cafe, friendly staff.
Pan-Fried Gnocchi. Lovely pan-fried potato gnocchi with bacon, olive oil, tomato & herbs. Gnocchi was much larger pieces that standard gnocchi but it was really well cooked and nice and soft. Lots of brunch items on the menu and they seem reasonably priced. Can see myself returning here when I am in the area. One waitress was a little bit confused as she asked us if we were ready to order after we had ordered and we asked for water which we never got, but one a minor complaint.
Fast and friendly service good standard of food. Great job, keep it up
Most amazing calamari salad I have ever tasted. Staff super helpful and quick. The little laneway feeling that I love about Melbourne is ripe here. The only thing that upsets me is the coffee. Too hot and the beans are a sub standard roast. Trying to make this my local and with a better blend I would be here everyday.
Great food, try the calamari salad..delish!!
Cute cafe. I kept coming back to this cafe while I was staying in Melbourne because the food was so delicious! It's a great cafe for people watching as well.
Tasty and Generous. Really great food. Lots of unique and interesting dishes. Generous portions. Wait staff were really nice people. The highlight is the interior with its indoor veggie patch. Awesome design.
Jump in and enjoy. Back in Melbourne for a day, and needed a quick bite, I had the bread with tomato herbs and cheese very nice. My two other companions had the Steak and chips which they both really enjoyed. The coffee is quite good. Nice and relaxing atmosphere, with a bit of sophistication. The staff are polite and did not disturb us as we discussed our work. The price is reasonable my meal was less than $10 and the total was I think less than $70. So if you pass by, hop in and you will probably like this place as I did.
Recommend. Excellent food at a good price and the coffee is good as well. Even though every time I have been there, there is only one person working this doesn't effect the level and quality of the service. Am always made to feel very welcome and feel that the staff are attentive.
Tucked away down a well known Melbourne walkway, the grasshoppers feast is possibly one of the best kept culinary secrets in the city! Delicious mouthwatering food awaits in a cosy yet alfresco space not unlike that which you would find along a Parisian lane way. Reasonable prices allow you to have more than a couple of selections from the menu and the service is second to none.... Definately my new favorite place for breakfast/lunch/brunch!!
Definitely a beautiful place to dine at. The only criticism would be the dish was bit bland and tasteless. Maybe will try something else next time!
The decor of this place is absolutely amazing and the concept is truly unique. The coffee was done to perfection and the avocado toast was a great delight to eat. I'll definitely be coming back for more.
Loved it. The gnocchi was amazing. Great little spot, will be back soon
Had a really enjoyable lunch beer battered fish and a great coffee owner was really friendly and helpful made a great coffee to finish great concept growing tomatoes will be back !!!!!

Generous feasting. The decor is quite sophisticated and pretty. Definitely made me walk the extra 4 metres into the restaurant, and avoid my usual dingy haunt a few doors down.
The waiter was quite nice. I also think it had a lot of delicious choices on the menu, outside of the normal breakfast offerings in the Bourke St Mall/Little Collins St vicinity (contrast with maccas, banana bread, to-go foods where no effort is made other than to take your money).
I had the goat's cheese and thyme omelette with a side of bacon. The omelette itself was quite big and I was not able to finish. I wish there was less egg and more goat's cheese...
It was also served with 4 rashers of bacon and I have come to expect 2 rashers from stingy city establishments, so this was a nice surprise! Coffee was delish and well made!
Great breakfast.. Milkshake and coffee were perfect, terra cotta eggs were a surprising delight, and the nutella crepes were wonderful. Definitely recommend for a delicious breakfast :)
