Good place for a quick lunch and coffee. The seating options are a bit awkward in the bar area, but the dining area is a bit easier to navigate. Quick service and hearty food.
What a wonderful place this is. Whenever we see a show, be it at Melbourne Theatre Company, MRC or Malthouse we always eat here! The restaurant staff are kind, efficient and well trained to cover the 100+ meals that you see fly out of the kitchen to feed everyone before shows start. Sometimes it is so busy you wonder how they do it! Simple delicious reasonably priced food. The cafe has a better wine list but sprits at the bar. From previous reviews that were disappointed about no breakfast menu this restaurant is open at 8am for locals and workers to grab a quick bite and toasted sandwich and continue on their way. You should come back and see a show and have dinner and see how they truely perform. Thank you Malthouse.
I come here regularly as it is a short walk away from VCA and has unbeatable prices and value for money.
They have an awesome range of salads and toasties and the coffee is amazing.
The staff are hospitable, polite and one of the main reasons I keep coming back.
Keep up the great work guys!
This is my first visit to the Malthouse. Friendly service and good food. My friend and I had the pork and fennel sausage rolls, yumm lol
And the Chartierre (maybe wrong spelling) was equally good. This consisted of olives, cold meats etc. Great Pinot Noir and Coopers beer mnnnnn hahaha
And the chocolate cake has just arrived!! OMGosh, it's HUGE! .... And sooo indulgent its delish haha
Met up with some friends in the bar about an hour before the show. Ordered a wine and one or two of the specials from the board. We were baffled by how good the food was, and how quickly it was served (including some food-tard changes) . It almost stole the show.
The Salads Are Fantastic ! Fresh, Clean and Healthy. The coffee was just what the doctor ordered
Life's too short. Personally I think the criticism is over the top. I come here quite regularly and haven't had a bad coffee, bad meal or bad service. Not sure what others expectations are when they go to a cafe, but found the service genuine, rather then being over the top and insincere, and the food good, with a great variety as the menu regularly changes.
Want an iced coffee in the mid winter, or listen to Cafe Del Mar while eating bland eggs on toast maybe try Gloria Jeans or Starbucks. The Malthouse is probably more suited to people looking for a more unpretentious experience, which suits me just fine. Horses for courses I guess?
I go there a lot as it is close and can get a decent lunch $10. The salads are usually pretty good
Really enjoyed the location and atmosphere but a café is made or broken by the quality of it's coffee; in this case it's thoroughly broken. Pity.
Good food and nice service. I like this caffe, its good food, nice and fresh, and its a nice place to hang out. There is the upstairs area and the lovely outside area with trees etc etc and its right next to uni, its a bit hectic when there is a big play on though.
In two words: busy, yummy. .... In two words: busy, yummy.
Good coffee, huge selection Of dishes for lunch (Less in the evening but more a ' Theatre' menu).
Staff remembered my name and coffee order by the 3rd visit.
Line gets long during obvious peak times but the delivery is always surprisingly quick.
Reliable regular.
Great Coffee. It's a little bit out of the way but worth the visit.
Breakfasts on the weekend are delicious, also great for quick, cheap and yummy lunches, i haven't tried evening meals yet.
Unlike a couple of the other reviews here I found the service to be excellent and the staff to be very friendly.
Best spot to sit is outside if the weather is nice.
Nice atmosphere and relaxing place to read the paper. Having said that, staff are unmotivated, slow and rarely warm and friendly. Sometimes takes upwards of 10 mins for a coffee when the place is empty.
This is one of the iconic theatre experiences in Melbourne. I'd you haven't had a chance to get out and experience the outdoor theatre such fun and engulfing experience. And drink and eat. It's fantastic. Thanks to all involved in bringing theatre back.
Loved this venue. Seats were spacious and comfortable. Great food and drink offering and reasonably priced. Helpful staff and really accessible with great free parking options near by.
Saw the razor sharp, stunning Reuben Kaye here. Delighted to see this incredible performer at Malthouse, one of our favourite Melbourne theatres. Malthouse delivers great theatre in a lovely inviting old brick venue with spacious outdoor area, a good bar and great food. Have enjoyed many relaxed nights of entertainment here. A really good place to have a night out.
I have only been to the outdoor stage but it is set up wonderfully. Good view of the stage from all seats. (Plus friendly staff bring around table service!)_
Visited on a Friday evening, nice selection of drinks, serving staff was welcoming, plenty of on street parking available nearby..
If your into performance and theatre, this is an experience you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Something so incredibly different and innovative you wouldn’t have seen before.
Because The Night is a theatre show loosely based on Hamlet, however instead of the actors performing traditionally on a stage, they perform alongside you in rooms, where you are able to explore, walk through and watch at your own leisure. You cannot touch the actors and they cannot touch you, they simply perform like you aren’t there. Different scenes are performed at the same time, and you start by entering either the Gymnasium, Bedroom or Office (chosen at time of booking).
No phones or bags are allowed in, so the inside remains a mystery to you. You are given a mask and a cape to wear, and you must remain silent as you explore the rooms. We were astonished by how many rooms there actually were, we didn’t even get to see them all in the 90 minutes. We seemed to be fish out of water and a little confused as what we were meant to be doing, my advise is to follow the actors, and not delve too much into each room looking for answers to the story as we did. Enjoy the show, we highly recommend it!
Tickets can be purchased from the Malthouse Theatre website and were $120pp. Only 60 audience members per show.
Great seating that has views from all areas so has been well thought out. Drink bar and cafe for preshow dine as well.
Great place! A lovely environment with absolutely nice staff around!
