Came here for dinner for the first time a couple of weeks ago and had nice meal of schnitzel and blintzes for desert. Large servings and delicious.
The cabbage rolls are amazing!! For sure my favorite dish. I’m from Brazil and the first time I came to Melbourne I went to this restaurant I love it at the first moment. As my second time here and still amazing food!
Had one the best wholesome flavorsome meals in a long time I was short on time and dining solo, no problem service was great and the meals very quick. Ordered the beef goulash with dumplings absolutely delicious with a cucumber salad served with sour cream? Very refreshing. This place has a great atmosphere is cozy and warm and I can’t wait to go back I would have given five stars but can you do that after sampling only one item? next time I will have the cabbage rolls. This place gets busy so book.
The place is a little Gem great home style cooking & the staff are so welcoming we had Wiener schnitzel, traditional Goulash , red cabbage salad & to finish The Blintzes 9/10
This place is a real gem! Went there to celebrate our anniversary, booked in advance (turned out a wise thing to do for it was fully booked when we arrived!)
Ordered a vegan mushroom soup, small cabbage rolls, small stuffed capsicum, apricot dumplings with ice-cream and two glasses of cab-sov. Service was excellent - friendly and prompt. Food arrived fast. Taste and flavour were fantastic! Wine was very good. They threw in a couple of pieces of bread with butter for free with the soup - a nice touch! Ambiance was good. When we were leaving, the place was packed! Very enjoyable experience, definitely coming back.
Overall - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Cosy, intimate, warm atmosphere with authentic delicious home cooked meals. What more could you ask for? We travel over an hour regularly to eat here. Service is always fast and friendly. Schnitzel and Goulash are particularly good but the food has never disappointed
All round not bad. I ordered chicken livers and kids had schnitzel both which were very nice. Very hearty!
Unfortunately my wife's stuffed capsicum dish was too sweet. WAAAAAY too sweet. We don't usually do Hungarian, so it was difficult to tell whether this was supposed to be how the dish is normally served. (The waitress told us it was). But all I can really do in this situation is say what our palettes told us: "Bring on diabetes!". It's not that the dish was sacrine sweet - just no relief from non-sweet ingredients. Capsicum AND sauce was sweet, and there was so much sauce that every bite of the dish was another teaspoon of sugar.
A shame because the rest of the meal and the atmosphere was great.
Wonderfully hearty food with great, thoughtful and friendly service. We had beef goulash with potatoes, sauerkraut, paprikash and spinach. Will definitely be back. Would absolutely recommend!
My friend and I had the Chicken Paprikash and the stuffed Cabbage Rolls - delicious!!! I preferred the chicken; my friend the cabbage rolls, but we enjoyed both thoroughly. Chicken meat was very tender, beautiful flavour. The mince meat in the cabbage rolls was juicy and delish but I prefer my sauerkraut a little sourer (and the dish saltier in general - but I like everything saltier! Better less salty than too salty - I can always add) Very happy to see dairy free options. The service was very friendly and the place has a lovely warm ambience. I'll be back :-)
Well I have never seen a schnitzel as big as the one I had tonight.
It was well crumbed but a little dry overall a nice meal.
My partner had one of the specials, the smoked pork hock. It was moist and had a lovely smoked flavour.
The wait for the meal seemed a little longer than normal but it was a busy night so will give them the benefit of the doubt for that.
Overall nice food in a nice cosy family feeling restaurant.
The Little Hungarian is a wonderful home style Hungarian restaurant that reminds me of the food my aunties and uncles cooked for me in Hungary. Their food is delicious, they have a lovely clientele of regular local Hungarians, their wait staff are attentive and friendly! Great hearty Hungarian cooking.

Perfect. Food was GREAT! Had been really sick with a cold and craving my grandmas food to cheer me up, this was the closest Hungarian restaurant to me I could find and it was spot on. We ordered take away and when we got home we thought we had doubled up on a main meal as there were so many containers in the bag, until we realised the portions were huuuge - one of our mains took up two tupperware containers alone, plus the side in a separate container as well! Definitely not complaining about that, means more leftovers tomorrow.
I plated it all up and gave one to my boyfriend (who had never tried Hungarian before) he took one bite and his mouth literally dropped. He absolutely loved it, he loved everything. We spent the next 15 minutes in total silence scoffing our plates down. It felt like I was a little girl eating in my grandma's kitchen all over again.
The servings are massive – I could have shared my cabbage rolls with someone and still struggled to finish!
The food was spectacular! Spot on! We ordered pork goulash with saukruat and crumbed veal with chips and salad. My favourite was the pork goulash the pork melted in your mouth, as well as the potatoes on the side cooked to perfection. The waiters were really friendly and bent backwards to make sure you were looked after. The only criticism is the fact that (don't know about the others ), but had to wait nearly an hour for the food. Chicken soup was lovely too very homemade traditional Hungarian style and the veal was massive! Nearly covered the entire plate. Book for a table because it's very small but always full. Happy eats!! The Veal Deal. The Little Hungarian restaurant has a reputation for simple, home-style comfort food and generously sized portions. The dining space may be unexceptional, however its honest Hungarian meals rate highly.
Not surprisingly, Hungarian goulash, chicken paprika and cabbage rolls are particularly popular, along with the variety of chicken and veal schnitzels.
I settled on the Veal Schnitzel served with boiled potatoes and delectable creamed spinach. The schnitzels here are pan fried, non greasy and just the right thickness. It was bliss to experience creamed spinach again and reminisce about the old days eating at Acland Street’s Blue Danube.
Not sure why it took me so long to finally visit, however I’ll most certainly be back shortly.
Chicken soup for the soul!. Best chicken soup in town, and of course, don't miss the schnitzel. You'll go there for the food, not the decor.
Great straight forward Restuarant. Simple, good food at reasonable prices. Massive serves. Well worth it.
Hearty and Cheerful. While neither the food nor the atmosphere will have you clamouring to return night after night, the Little Hungarian delivers where it needs to. The staff are warm and attentive, the simple, homely interior is without pretension, and they have a good range of Eastern European beers in stock. The traditional rustic peasant food is tasty and satisfying, charmingly served on miss-matched clay plates, and the portions here are extremely generous. Not suitable if you are looking for a five star evening, but a great place to go in a small group on a cold, rainy day, to take comfort in the goulash and ale.
Should change the name to Big Hungarian. Having been for the 1st time weren't sure what expect, well my wife and I were pleasantly surprised, the food was good and plenty, the surrounds were reasonably plain and simple , but the service was good as was the food .
Filled with Hungarians. You know it's good when the entire Melbourne Hungarian community eat there. Love it all. Schnitzels are famous, the bean soup is the best but only made once a week, plum and apricot dumplings for dessert are a must but only on made on Wednesdays. Paprika chicken and nokedli, very good and hortabagyi crepes amazing (filled with minced paprika chicken and covered with paprika sauce).
Excellent food. The food is delicious. Today I still love it because I have been there heaps of times already because the food is excellent and the service is great but the staff who is in charge on Monday nights there is very rude to her guests and I don't like her at all.
OMG!. After a long day of dropping kids off at sports, inbtween that I instructed 2 pump classes at the local gym.
The food is sooo generous! Being a big eater (real big!) Cabbage Rolls were delicious! couldn't even finish them off. The fried cheese to die for!! And my husband +Kids had the schintzels couldn't finish the meal soooo big it's not funny. the only thing I wouldn't order is the chocolate crepes as they use "cottee's" chocolate syrup thought that was a bit cheap. The Waitress was very helpful. It has resonable prices too. So worth it, we are going again this week!!
Great chicken schintzel. Small place, busy with no frills. An older crowd, but good home cooking. We love the chicken schnitzel with potatoes and creamed spinach, and it is huge! The dessert dumplings are okay too. The older lady with glasses, she may be the owner, can be a little moody, sometimes she's nice and other nights a bit grumpy, but we all have our days. Go to try the schintzel.
I have been going to this restaurant for years, always loved it, but have been disappointed the last couple of visits. I am Hungarian, so know what the food should taste like and it hasn't been very nice. And, for the waitress, speaking Hungaran is not a prerequisite but understanding the food is, iny opinion. The last time we were there, my son ordered goulash with "nokedli". No nokedli left, said the waitress, would you like some chips with it? Firstly, I looked around to see if ELizabeth was in, because you can make fresh nokedli on 5 minutes. She was in. However, forgetting that point, CHIPS??? Given that goulash is basically a stew, who'd eat chips with a stew? Obviously, the waitress had no idea what goulash was! She could have offered mashed potatoes or rice-anything other then chips. Anyway, I will give the place one more try before giving up on it completely
The food was absolutely delicious 😋. The hospitality was second to none. I'll definitely go back to the little Hungarian.
Absolutely delightful and heart-warming experience! Welcoming, considerate and responsive service. Tasty, tasty goulash - we had both types, the beef and the pork with sauerkraut. Unassuming home-style approach and atmosphere. Also tried the Hungarian beers, salad and simple soup. Thank you!
It was a wonderful experience, nice ambience. Food was terrific. The only negative I can say is that don't do substitutions or cater for allergies, other than that it was great service.
We are planning our next outing to be there
This is as close as authentic as you can get, almost better than mum's .... Almost! Must make a booking, must have the chicken soup, actually must have everything on the menu! If you want an amazing dinner, Dont take the kids!
Delicious hungarian dishes, very hearty.
Well cooked and well seasoned, We can feel the love has been put into the dishes from the chefs.
Staffs are very friendly and fun.
such a great environment and comfortable place.
easy parking around the area.
definitely will come back ASAP! 😇
Wow amazing place for a rich home-cooked meal! Just delicious and soo comforting! I’m from Bavaria/Germany and the food tasted just like home.
Service was really good two! All up 10/10
Loved my first experience here last night. Schnitzel and crumbed mushrooms were perfection, and so is the sides are fresh and yum! Food is well done and service is spot on. Will surely be back to come dine here again.
