When it comes to a nice and cosy bar, i think of Hihou

You walk into a nice and cosy setting where you can seat down and enjoy a drink and have a chat. Love how they have such a good range on the menu and most drinks are japanese inspired.

We had the shoya and really enjoyed it. Love the ambience and the service here

Great place as a Japanese bar. Tried the set dinner. A bit pricey. The bar is well hidden - as the name suggests. Liked their sake based cocktail.

With a nondescript door, Hihou is definitely a classic Melbourne secret.

Ordered:
Hihou set, 5 courses ($60.00)
🚬'Cuban' spicy tuna cigar
🌽 Sweet corn and scallop kaki-age, nori, shicimi
☕ Coffee cured salmon sashimi, cucumber, wakame and kimizu
🍗 Hihou fried chicken
🍢 Kushiyaki - kurobata pork belly skewers, teriyaki, fried potatoes, nori salt

Review:
I love degustation menus because they make me go out of my comfort zone. It makes me try new things and new combos I never would've chosen for myself... and it's all decided for me 😆.
Our favourite was the last dish - the pork belly skewers. It had this layer of fat in just the right places that gave it an amazing burst of flavor. I really really enjoyed every single bite.
All the other dishes were memorable and unique too. Who ever thought about combining corn and scallop?!

The service was really accommodating. My friend and I were rushing prior to another appointment so we asked to have everything come out asap. Even on our tiny table they made sure to keep the food coming one after the other. Amazing!!
Side note: make sure you make a booking on the Hihou website!

Secret bars are my favourite place to hang out in Melbourne. This place is fab as you ring the secret door bell and walk into a very posh bar.

We enjoyed a round of lemon & gin cocktail (but I can't remember the name as I can't find an updated menu) after dinner.

Lovely ambience and very relaxing atmosphere.

I stopped in here after dinner. Actually it took some searching out. It is quite hidden. There is no sign. There is just a door on the south side of the street on Flinders Lane with a call button. If you round the corner on to Spring Street, you'll see a bottle shop. Hihou is right above the bottle shop (I can't remember the name).

Once you get in, the atmosphere is fantastic. Very subdued and calming. The windows also give you a great view over the Treasury Gardens.

The food is supposed to be very good but I only had a cocktail. I had the EDO Murasaki (Japanese whiskey, Campari, Averna, yuzu, lychee syrup and shiso). It was a fantastic cocktail. Spirit forward (which I wanted) and quite balanced. It was also served over a beautiful hand carved ice cube.

I look forward to going back!

Hihou is secluded, secretive, and a world on its own. No flashy and fancy signages to even point out that this place even exist. You have to press a door bell and someone will answer the door to bring you into this place. It is like entering the closet of Narnia and into a world on its own when you step into this bar.

I love the exclusivity of this bar. You get to have a cosy catch up with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.

Came here with AG post-work for a catch up. Everything was on point.
🍹 DRINKS:  "Roku Gin and Tonic" $unknown: came as 1 glass, very smooth and thoroughly enjoyable
🍽 FOOD: "Fried Chicken Balls x 6" $12-15?: these were fried to a crispy-sweet perfection, with the squeeze of lemon really enhancing the flavours. 📷 AMBIENCE: I loved the "hidden bar" aesthetic, the dim lights, and the windows giving way to an elevated night view of Spring Street.🧂SERVICE: good
Would revisit for other drinks, or even to try the Hihou burger!

Definitely a hidden cosy Japanese bar and restaurant with a "lost in translation vibe". Ideal if you don't want to be some where too noisy on a Friday night. I thought the food portion size was fantastic especially if you are not a big eater. There was definitely inventive use of flavours for e.g. salmon sashimi matched with coffee, yuzu and tofu cheesecake were fantastic. Overall, I thought it was a lovely place to dine at.

This little hidden gem is definitely one of my favourites in Melb. It’s small, intimate and the cocktails are amazing. Tried food here for the first time and I’m not sure if I’m a fan. Highlights: The setting of the place is just so spot on. The cocktails are on point – light, refreshing; I can drink these all night. Lowlights: the food doesn’t taste as fresh as it should – perhaps coming here during ‘normal’ eating times would be much better.

😱Lizzie’s first impression: I love how there’s a secret doorbell you have to press in order to get in! The place is small, cosy but has great ambience to it.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I loved how cosy the place is - we sat right in the corner and it was the perfect way to end the night with a cocktail. The staff are awesome!

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: it is a little small so I don’t recommend a group to come here!

🥇Lizzie rates overall: A great place for Japanese inspired cocktails and sakes. I’d love to come back to try their menu items too!

A cool restaurant with seating options in a more traditional bar area as well as a lounge type area where you can literally kick your feet up. Found the menu to be a little limiting in terms of drinks and snack variety but I enjoyed everything we ordered.

Great atmosphere. Food ok but not fantastic. You have to buzz for someone to let you in. That if you can find the door.

Love the coffee salmon and sweet potato chips. The duck and wagyu was good too. Don't fancy the Scallop Ceviche that much.

Budget should be about $150 for two with a drink each. Food portion is not big.

Will go back for drink.

Although a bar by night, on the last Saturday of the month Hihou offers a Japanese take on high tea($40 pp). On arrival, you are presented with the menu and handed wet towels to wipe your hands. The experience is split into 3 courses: Japanese yum cha, chicken katsu and Japanese sweets. Each dish presented were all delicate, refined and beautifully crafted. My favourite from the yum cha course was the agedashi tofu because of its subtle nutty flavours and the chewy texture. The chicken katsu had a light crispy crumb coat encasing juicy meat on the inside and the sauce added an additional dimension of flavour. The Japanese sweets were not only a pleasure to look at but encased a range of flavours and textures. I liked that they were not overly sweet and each sweet had an asian element to it. The high tea is also accompanied by a selection of Japanese and Western teas - I loved the fragrant peach tea as it was not too overpowering and complemented the rest of the dishes.

The bar is a bit of a challenge to find, hidden behind a large black door with minimal signs. On ringing the door bell you are greeted and led inside a dimly lit, Japanese style room. There are multiple floors and private rooms available for a more intimate night. The staff are all very attentive and polite and were very accommodating to our needs. The beautiful interior and ambiance alone would bring me back to this hidden little bar.

I came here for a pre-dinner drink for my partner's birthday and was looking for something classy and intimate. Hihou definitely delivered with a quiet atmosphere and none of the hustle and bustle of the usual Melbourne bar. I loved the extra touch of having to ring the door bell to get in - adds a bit of novelty to the experience.

The drinks were excellent and varied so there's something for everyone. I had the fruit cocktail with passionfruit which was dangerous because it was so tasty I struggled to stop at just one. There are also a number of affordable bar snacks available for nibbles.

Highly recommend for a pricey night out - because the drinks are very pricey.

My second time here and I can say it was a big step up from the last time. Oysters fresh, tuna cigars a must try and the usual edamame all accompanied by a beaker of Umeshu. Ambience is just what you need on a Saturday evening with attentive service. Love the rather obscure entrance; where a doorbell welcomes you to a cosy inviting setting.

Extremely difficult to locate we wandered around searching until we discovered a doorbell (no signage to be found) which eventually granted us access. I think this a beautiful date venue as its intimate and special but it's not substantial enough to be a regular repeat experience. Yummy cocktails but really more of a bar then restaurant therefore the food isn't adequate for an entire meal. I'll admit we grabbed some takeaway sushi from Emporium on the way home as we weren't remotely full. Amazing atmosphere though and well worth a visit. Just don't expect a hearty meal

Food (7/10): Don't go here expecting traditional Japanese food. The food here is good with a different twist to the norm. We ordered the Cuban cigars, coffee cured salmon sashimi, Wagyu beef and buckwheat pork belly crepes. I appreciated that the menu has dishes different to what you would find at a Japanese restaurant but the food itself was lacking flavour and seafood was not fresh.

Service (7/10): the service was good but it was difficult to get anyone's attention when we needed a request.

Ambience (3/10): It's extremely moody in this restaurant and by that I mean very dark. It was difficult to fully appreciate the meal and also read the menu. I saw everyone else in the restaurant using their phone light to read the menu.

This place sits right a the end of flinders lane but with such a prominent location, we had to ring the door bell and be greeted through a dodgy entrance. That is a first for me with the door bell. Dodgy entrance is not biggie as it tends to signify a great bar behind it. Something I have learned after visiting numerous bars in Melbourne.

It was a quiet Tuesday night and with tables empty, they seem understaffed and took them a while to hand us their drinks menu. Pretty obvious it is a Japanese themed bar / restaurant and we got a couple of shochu. By no means I am experienced with Japanese liquor but it tasted very unique. In a good way that is. However, it may not be to everybody's liking as it is no conventional liquor.

Overall... it is an okay experience I guess? Would I come back? Maybe when I crave for a glass of shochu.

What really stood out about this bar was the ambient atmosphere with the dimmed lights and the groovy/chilled out music. The entrance had a doorbell at what seemed like a secret passageway where the waiter/waitress came to greet us and walk us in, providing very specialised service. We were seated in a section where shoes had to be removed, and seated on a nice comfy couch. Each section was separated by shades which provided privacy. Such an amazing, intimate and romantic atmosphere which was perfect for celebratory drinks for our anniversary. Staff were so very lovely and polite and tended to us right away when needed.

Downs: Miniscule servings, very pricey food.
Go here to try the craft beers and the hihou dog, the rest of it was good, but nothing spectacular for the prices we paid. Be prepared to remove your shoes and sit, if you don't choose to sit near the bar.

Loved it. Ginza meets Flinders Lane.

My daughter brought my wife and myself here for late drinks after a dinner at Longrain. A cold Melbourne night but the welcome at Hihou was warm. A large array of Whiskey( mostly Japanese), Saké, cocktails and Umeshu. And a decent selection of Japanese beers, including Kirin Heartland which I'd only previously drunk in Tokyo.

This place isn't huge but is hugely busy. Book ahead or prepare for a long wait. We left after a couple of hours and there was a line of 20 or so waiting to get a table.

Food and drinks:
The drinks here are marvellous- well worth coming just for that.

We were under the impression this was a dinner option. It's not. The food menu is small, the portion sizings almost miniscule. Everything we got was tasty, but for the prices- we simply couldn't afford to keep ordering. The gyoza are particularly yum.

Service:
Fantastic. In true Japanese style, the staff are very courteous and eloquently explain the different Japanese liquors.

Ambience:

Another big tick, a beautiful place for a drink. A nice little exclusive vibe to it.

Recommendations:
Come for drinks and maybe a snack. This is not a dinner restaurant.

Almost completely unmarked and requiring patrons to press a non descript doorbell to be granted entry, it is easy to miss Hihou. Once inside, you are greeted by a gorgeously minimalist Japanese interior lit by flickering candles and a chique backlit bar. Shoes will need to come off if you are going to venture into the more intimate spaces to the right of the bar and the menu has been clearly designed with drinking in mind – think sword fish sashimi, oroshi-ponzu and shichimi and fried crumbed eggplant and kingfish skewers. This is a good thing as Hihou boasts an extensive range of Japanese beers, whiskeys and, of course, sake. Hihou feels words away from its Spring Street location and is definitely one to check out.

Now I thought I knew of all of Melbs hidden alleyway bars but this place has me. We wandered around the block and alley ways in the surrounding area, looking behind dumpsters and random flight escapes to get to the door. We found a discreet doorbell with a camera and managed to find a door that opened with a host greeting us. We went upstairs and were told to take our shoes off and taken to a super comfy wide cushion couch booth you could lay flat on. The menu looked like a table mat which was a bit embarrassing as we didn't realise. Red wine was nice and my friend said the sake was the high end selection. Edamame had this creamy sauce with it and was beans only which was different but odd. Can't ever really go wrong with potatoes. Awesome chilled place for a night cap and snack.

Had dinner at this place with a friend. As other reviewers have mentioned, you step into this cozy atmosphere after being brought into through the unassuming door. It is well decorated with a large variety of bottles at the bar.
Quick review of some of the food:
The anago temaki roll was well presented and tasted good,
Duck pancakes were interesting, really enjoyed them,
The hotdog was... pretty much what you expected but comes with 3 sauces, tonkatsu, wasabi mayo and chilli.
Probably won't come back again for food but maybe some afterwork drinks as their cocktails looked like a lot of effort was put into them.

Afternoon tea @ Hihou.  Tea: Ise Sencha: Unfortunately not a good pick, too weak at the start and too strong at the end.
1. Vegetable gyoza - nice sauce, OK gyoza
2. Tonkatsu sandwich - outside surface of bread is a bit dry, OK tonkatsu.  Recommend covering sandwiches with cling wrap and not leave it sitting too long.
3. Anago sushi - Very yum, I don't usually like brown rice sushi but this one is done very well.  The anago quite delicate, the flavours took me back to Miyajima.
4. Chawan mushi - is done quite well, not for those who don't like shellfish or dashi.

Wagashi box:
5. Peach mashumaro (marshmellow) - Can't taste the peach and the pink colour made everyone thinks it was raspberry.  Didn't taste like raspberry either.  Texture and flavour are not quite right, feels like it needs something else.  Maybe a dusting of peach sherbet on top.
6. Matcha roll - Pretty ordinary, the rolls are actually green tea crepes, with vanilla cream filling.  Would be much better with azuki paste cream rolled throughout.
7.  Citrus kanten - A favourite.  The fresh layers of orange, pink grapefruit and agar jelly made a great palate cleanser.  Layers could be done better but understandably fragile at around 2 cm x 2 cm size.
8.  Black sesame seed cheesecake - The black sesame flavour don't come through and at the same time too dense a cheesecake for sesame's delicate flavour.  Recommend incorporating roasted whole sesame as part of the bottom crust for a stronger flavour/aroma hit.

9. Strawberry swiss roll cake - quite nice and delicately flavoured, done how swiss roll cakes should be.
10. Soy mousse with yuzu sauce - Can't really see the yuzu sauce, but the mousse is yuzu-flavoured.  Not too bad if on the dense side.

Comfortable seating and great setting for drinking and chatting but they really need to improve the wagashi selections A LOT to make it worth a return visit.

When in Rome? Ask for your meal selection to be matched with a Sake served warm or cold. Whilst appearing in 'secret bars' in this app it really is more of a restaurant, there is seating at the bar which is where we were seated it was still very comfortable to eat. Wonderfully balanced dishes - yes the tuna cigars live up to the hype. Understated cool fit out, awesome food, super service yet tiny cocktail size napkins? Yes it's picky but it's the little things when it's evident there is much thought into everything else ...including the mirror on the ceiling above the bet

You need to watch out for some of the prices for wine by the glass because the price to quality ratio drops very quickly. Service is efficient, but it is really a bar so attentiveness is not restaurant quality, and I think it is best for a quick bite and beer. It’s attractive in a classic sense, but also for its point of difference. I’m not hooked, but I’ll be back for a dog… or two.

Very 'Melbourne' in the sense that it's hidden away in a laneway and there's no clear signage to indicate its existence to casual passers-by. The decor is fantastic - clean, minimalist, with soft mood lighting, lanterns and the shadows and silhouettes and sake bottles decorating the walls. Came here with a friend for a quiet Monday night drink and we had a stunning view of the treasury gardens on Spring Street. Unfortunately I did not get to sample any sakes because I had driven in that night and decided to go non-alcoholic. We ordered the edamame (dressed beautifully, a far cry from the cheap, fibrous stuff you get at cheaper establishments) salmon sashimi (fresh, light and scattered with adorable squares of salty ponzu jelly. The hihou burger was delicious and came with preserved ginger, fermented cabbage and generous self-serve bottles of sauces. Would love to come back again to try the sakes.

Dark & intriguing. We stopped in to start our Saturday evening with some warm sake and a light bar snack. The mood was perfect, the flavours delicious, and the service wonderfully attentive.

One of melbourne's best speakeasy. As a regular at E.D.V, we have decided to checkout the Japanese inspired speakeasy cocktail bar hihou which is just down the road. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly Japanese lady who ushered us to our reserved window seats even though we were an hour earlier. The bar is great for couples where all 2 seaters are practically window seats greeted by the majestic view of treasury gardens. While groups will have to go shoeless and climb up to the tatami mat area. We tippled the Yamazaki 12 year whisky (neat) & Bali Melo which is a tropical refreshing cocktail utilising Yamazaki 12 year as it's base. Accompanied by their attentive tip deserving service, hihou has made it on our list of "go to"cocktail bars in melbourne.

Great concept. We stopped by for some warm plum wine on a chilly Melbourne night. Love the decor and service.

Excellent selection of unique drinks, bar staff very courteous and skilled, food was incredible. We were lucky enough to be there during a quiet period, so service was nice and fast.

A different bar. Modern Japanese fusion style food and they are famous for their hot dog, Hihou Dog. A beer and a simple hot dog. Why not... Nice and quiet, good place for a quiet and romantic catch up.

Great selection of Japanese drinks in a cool contemporary space. Took a while to find the entrance, but worth the search. If you love Japanese food and alcohol, it’s a top find in Melbourne CBD.... and quiet so you can hear people (aka. good for dates)

Hidden (very hidden) gem in the city for fancy Japanese inspired cocktails and food. A must go for dinner date.

The folks who’ve provided Melbournians with Hihou were not messing around with the hidden bar concept Hihou is Japanese for “Secret Treasure” and entrance to this establishment is only done via ringing a doorbell on an unmarked door in Flinders Lane, low lighting adds to the ambience, along with Japanese Décor so glad we went before they close and move on -brilliant service, fresh tasty food to die for. The only downside-those damn face masks- well done guys

"Hidden" Japanese cocktail bar above a Japanese restaurant overlooking Fitzroy Gardens. Interesting range of Japanese whiskeys (not just the typical Hibiki, etc), sakés, shochus, etc. Cocktails small but creative. Cozy space too.

Lovely little sake bar. No signage, hidden black door off Flinders Lane. Ring the door bell that looks like the delivery back door of a restaurant, the amazing Japanese owners will great you in no time.
