Strong drinks, great vibes, a party with strangers, i wish i lived in Melbourne, would happily go back again. It's like karaoke without the humiliation.
The Gluten-Free Foodie

Murmur and Portello Rosso the restaurant are wonderful spaces. We booked for a Friday night celebration as a group of four. When arriving we requested if the set menu for the evening could accommodate gluten-free and vegetarian dietary requests. The kitchen were happy to oblige and included gluten-free toasted bread with the cheese platter and vegetarian paella. The meal was huge all up with so many options and very delicious. We could barely finish one of the two large paellas's served between us after the entrees. At $50 per head, it was an incredible value. The range of drinks and mocktails were also great. The piano bar was way too busy and loud to have a conversation but having been back on a Thursday night I realize it is more for midweek than Friday.
Down a tiny laneway, through a nondescript door, and up a flight of stairs you will find one of the coolest piano bars in Melbourne. It's a tiny space, with lots of tables and a small amount of standing room, and there are some lovely art works and mirrors around the room.
They have regular pianists that play over the weekend, and this brings the crowds in. Everyone has a great time and sing along to classic tunes to more modern songs. They do requests which also makes it fun.
The bar staff are great... friendly and good at their job. Service is quick even though it does get busy. There is a fun atmosphere here which is why we continue to return, and so do many other people.
Love this piano bar. I stumbled across it last year and couldn’t for the life of me remember where it was or what it was called. Last night I found it again and it did not disappoint. A few casual drinks with my partner for our anniversary was made extra special by this lovely place.
Lovely and cozy bar. Staff is super friendly and attentive, drinks are great. Highly recommend on a piano-bar evening, the atmosphere is great!
What a wonderful place! Unlike a lot of bars, Murmur has a really nice food menu because the food is provided by Portello Rosso. Would definitely recommend the chorizo and the mushroom and blue cheese croquettes.
The highlight of the venue is the piano music! Matt Ganim’s performance on April 20 was really good!
The cocktails are amazing. Definitely try their chilli cocktail. The chocolate cocktail is also nice. The Sempai Japanese sake cocktail was nice but definitely my favourite cocktail was the chilli one.
I look forward to returning to Murmur in the future. Definitely will be my favourite cocktail bar from now on.
I went here on a Friday night, the venue was cosy yet sophisticated and it was quite busy.
The piano was lively and fun although it was quite loud and very hard to have a conversation.
Great place for a relaxing after work cocktail or wine, and delicious spanish tapas, staff were lovely, definitely worth a visit just don't pick the table near the stairwell when it's cold and windy!
Great little bar hidden away in Melbourne laneways. With great comfy coaches and quick efficient service. Along with our wines we enjoyed the patatas bravas. Highly recommend to get away from all the hustle and bustle.
Found this place on recommendation. Great atmosphere and awesome tapas style food. Not expensive and a great place for after work drinks.
Staff very friendly and service was great.
I'll be back again with more friends.
0.5 of a mark off due to the table being rocky and unbalanced. 😂
Omg what a week I've had and what better way to make it all alright again. Murmur is not the sort of place you just stumble on as it's located down a dead end
laneway with the subtlest of signs. Upstairs and through a curtain then up some more... there she goes. Now sit your weary soul down and wipe the slate clean for the weekend with a few rounds of delicious well prepped cocktails served to you from at a couple of bar tenders in hawaiian shirts with all the enthusiasm they could possibly muster on this precipitous evening. We absolutely had to try the flipping salty royal off the specials menu with eggs and caramel sauce. This really should migrate to the permanent menu. We read a review of the Valerie's Vacation which was like drinking lemon cheesecake. I couldn't pick a favourite out of those two. We also ordered the Caramelo Colada & Ginger Girl. Caramelo Colada was a little tarty for me but I enjoyed Ginger Girl despite not normally loving ginger beer. A lovely space with rustic elements & Art Deco elements and lavish couches that were fully reserved when we arrived (unfortunately). These can be reserved ahead of time via an email request to drinks@murmur.com.au I just might have to do that on my return. I didn't see the food menu until looking at Zomato afterwards but wish I had.
This is a great little bar tucked off little Bourke.
The ambient was great with a warm comfortable feel and the music wasn't too loud.
The drink selection was fantastic, especially the beers and the food was also very good. Well priced and lovely staff.
This is really cool place with an art deco and rustic feel. Bartenders are great at drink suggestions - mojito was 10/10! Unfortunately my cocktail - lemon cheesecake - was a bit too sweet for my liking. DJ on site spinning tunes, a bit of RNB, pop, disco! Comfy couches and mood lighting throughout. Our two drinks = $40.
On Saturday night we held our engagement party at Murmur and it was absolutely outstanding.
From when we initially looked into the venue, till the end of party night, everything ran seamlessly. We had so many guests commenting on the beautiful food, service and cocktails.
I cannot recommend this place enough if you are looking for a venue for about 70-80 people. Matt was fantastic in helping us with the catering and Kylie was wonderful in managing the bar, music and basically the set up of our night.
You have left us with wonderful memories and we will be back!
Glorious cocktails, really excellent cocktails. Lovely interior, music wasn't too loud and there was a decent amount of people. However bartenders need to be faster. Waiting for 20 mins at the bar at a small place like this won't work.
Staff are extremely helpful and friendly, drinks and food is really tasty. Ambiance is perfect for a quiet chat. My only negative would be that it's a little pricey, but I would never say I feel ripped off.
Delicious cocktails and friendly staff. Dj on Saturday nights makes the ambiance cool and relaxed. Make sure to ask the bartenders for suggestions and check their very good whiskey, tequila and rum selections.
Great cocktails, great atmosphere, staff were friendly and small bites were good. Love the good ol' Melbourne down-a-laneway-up-a-flight-of-stairs. Good for post-work tipples and friendly group catchups. Had the Evolution cocktail and it was such a treat.

Best place in Melbourne for cocktails, cosy, quiet, great service and cocktail menu, I love the "Italian Job" Cocktail. Would love it if they had more room as it books up quick and I always miss out on a comfy couch.
Murmur is one of my favourite bars in Melbourne's CBD, and has been since I moved to the city almost 4 years ago. The space is typical Melbourne at its best - down a laneway and up a set of stairs. What awaits when you enter is an open space with high ceilings and lots of couches - it's a really nice spot.
All this means nothing if the drinks aren't good, and that isn't a problem at Murmur. There's a decent selection of craft beers, rums and cocktails and the rest of the offerings aren't bad either. The staff really know their stuff and all really seem to enjoy working there which adds to the great vibe. One of my fail-safe options in the CBD.

A quick trek up a flight of stairs and you enter an attic space with high ceilings and a really cool fit-out. This is one of the reasons why I love Melbourne so much - finding spaces like this, almost like hidden gems which quickly become popular with the after-work corporate crowd.
We have spent the last few weeks in some of Melbournes great bars – most of them with intimate lighting that results in shocking pictures! But if you did fancy a adventure one night you might like to try some of these beauties! Murmur Above the wonderous tapas of Portello Rosso is a cute little bar, a great place to just be! Stocking Boston lager for the boy and an enjoyable wine list as well as impressive cocktails – it is a damn fine spot! If you can grab one of the few seats or couches you should never leave, it’s a great place to be! Eau De Vie First time in ages we have played the “Where on earth is the door” game! Yep, good old Melbourne, down the laneway and if you can find the big heavy wooden door – don’t be scared just come inside! As described by the website this is no average bar – “E.D.V is an intimate, dimly lit, jazz infused speakeasy created for the discerning bon vivant.” There is no wine list, no beer, this is a cocktail wonderland with Alice in Wonderland eccentricit
This place is awesome! We came here for a friends birthday. It was a little hard to find, just a set of stair off an alleyway. The staff were fantastic, particularly the older guy with glasses. He was enthusiastic and friendly the whole night. Pouring awesome cocktails and keeping his cool even when we accidentally smashed a few glasses (sorry!)
In glad I found this place, I'll be coming back.
Ps awesome drinks, reasonable prices.
What a great find. This lounge is really nice. I like that the crowd wasn't too big. the cocktails are wonderful. loved Valerie's Vacation which is a martini. Food was good overall except maybe the pork belly. The crispy skin was too salty. Anchovies with goat's cheese was the star. must try. Meatballs were also good. A really nice place to go to with friends.
Such a cosy tapas bar. Really good selection of drinks and the tapas from portello rosso down stairs is so tasty and delish. Pricing is decent for an inner city bar.
Pleases Every Time. I have been here several times, and am always greeted with wonderful, warm and welcoming customer service. They make you feel like they're happy you're there, and appreciate your patronage. Recently I went in and discovered that they had changed their cocktail menu and no longer had the Maple Berry. The bartender (I think he was a new addition to the place) offered to try and make it for me. Considering I could only remember 3 of the basic ingredients, he did a bit of improvising and produced liquid heaven in a martini glass. The cocktails may be a bit pricey, but every sip is worth it. These guys know what they're doing, and this place is by far the best cocktail place I have ever been to.
Feels like home.. The guys at the Brunswick Mess Hall sent me by here, after I had a few cheeky pints and a tasty well made margerita down there last week .. I was very grateful for the recommendation. The guys behind the bar gave me a warm hello before I even got all the way up the stairs... Impressive back bar, amazing cocktails, 40 or so beers available and just good old fashioned service with a great cheeky feel. If only it was home!
A shout not a murmur. Murmur is great! It has all the required ingredients to make a fab Melbourne bar:
- a somewhat hidden location down a laneway
- tasty and well-priced food (supplied by the downstairs Portello Rosso)
- a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere including comfy couches
- great chilled staff, and
- sensational drinks.
It can be a bit grungy at times, and suity at others but it's always enjoyable throughout the week and across the year. Enjoy.
I took my best friend from Sydney here and it was FANTASTIC! The amazing bartender made us individual perfect cocktails after asking a few personal preferences. The pork belly and chorizo tapas dishes are amazing! Not a '$' night but worth every cent.
Small, friendly and opinionated. My stay at Murmur was a brief two hour shift, catching up with an old friend and with Melbourne bars, having been absent for a few years.
We wanted to avoid a "couple of draft beers and chips" and hence picked here from the 'spoon - we were not disappointed ! Matt and Rob, brothers in bartending, helped us pick out way across several exotic bottles of beer, whilst we dined on some fabulous tapas - not "cheap" as UrbanSpoon has it labelled, but fantastic tastes.
The octopus and the mountain goat / coffee beer were my favorites, and the bar tenders too. I don't mind my bar staff coming with strong opinions when the opinions are this good. Suspect I'll be visiting again to meet new friends and beers.
Elegant. Wonderful, tucked away gem of a place!
A1 service and a1 cocktails! Worth it!!
Tucked away yet buzzing with atmosphere. Think provencial classic crossed with a splash of Cuba or the deep South US for ambience. drinks are great and staff really superb. Try a burnt orange rum sour... Serious highlight
Chilled out coktail bar. Amazing hidden cocktail bar off Lt Bourke St. Great range of cocktails. Very cool atmosphere.
My favourite cocktail bar. A bit of a Melbourne institution. Awesome cocktail list and a very good selection of imported beers. They make a great Negroni!!
What an amazing venue! The cocktail choices are extremely tasty, I would recommend the Bombay velvet & Miles ahead if you are after something sweeter.
The pianist was extremely entertaining and engaging with the crowd bring up a high energy.
10/10 recommend
love this hidden Piano Bar, was walking on the street and found this piano bar in the alley. my bf was here with his friend most of the tuesday night. glad that we came here and try the cocktail, it recommended by one of the staff, thanks to him , so good. sad they only open three days now
A brilliant place to be. Staff was very welcoming and the venue is perfect for a few quite cocktails on a weekday. I will certainly come to hear the live music.
Wow wow wow wow. Such an amazing vibe, amazing cocktails, amazing entertainment, made a very memorable night. I will definitely come back here. 15/10.
Tim Mitchell is a fantastic pianist and knows how to please his audience. The bar staff were so outstanding and very friendly. And in a very rare full house of compliments, the security chap on the foot wearing number 30 was also extremely friendly and considerate when asking us to be quiet for the neighbours. Lovely bloke
Here's why this is a 5 star experience. Really friendly staff, with fabulous diversity, an historic venue that oozes warmth, along with a great, and well priced, wine and cocktail list. And we couldnt stay for the piano tunes, so it can only be even better once the ivories are twinkled.
Really great place to get a drink, service is nice and quick and drink selection is good. We hadn’t made a reservation but were able to grab a seat right by the piano on a Friday night for a couple of hours before the seat reservation commenced which was great.
Absolutely brilliant spot!!! Very welcoming inclusive space. Bar staff were awesome and catered to our requests. Entertainment was fantastic and everyone had a great time singing along. Will definitely be back!!!
