Review Chine On Paramount - Melbourne

The staff were so friendly and the food was outstanding. It was a very busy night as the Comedy Festival and the International Garden Show were on. We couldn't get a table anywhere. Luckily we only had to wait 5 minutes and they got us a table. They informed us there would be a half hour wait as they were short staffed and very busy. We were happy to wait. The staff were so friendly and attentive. I think it might be just one family, but I don't know. We had rib eye steak with black pepper sauce and the most perfect lemon chicken with special friend rice. It took me back to my childhood. The prawn toast was deliciously smokey too. I don't even know how they did that. I cannot wait to come back for another meal.

Every time we travel to Melbourne from Sydney this restaurant is a must visit and top of the list. The food is always amazing, service is supreme and affordability well within budget. The variety of dishes and frequent seasonal specials is fantastic. Have never had a bad meal here. Let me change that have never had an average meal here. It always exceeds expectations. Put it on your list. Pop in and try and im sure you will agree. Thank you so much Chine on Paramount, lunch or dinner you are the highlight of our visit every time.

Wow! What a surprise this place is! It starts with welcoming staff, a clean restaurant, and a flexible selection of dishes. The fish (Squirrel fish) wasn't on the menu, but was recommended along with some Shanghainese/regional dishes. All the dishes were perfectly cooked with good presentation (chef is from HK). The menu changes from time to time. Fair prices for the quality of dishes. Would highly recommend.

Food taste great with good serving size. The seating area is spacious. Good customer service. Will come back again.

Highly recommended. Super friendly welcome and very accomodating. We just wanted to grab takeout and be off on our way and they were so brilliant. Pics come later.

Reminded me of the birthday dinners I had growing up in country NSW. Classic, old school Chinese-Australian food and doesn't apologise for it. Staff are friendly and the prices are what you expect in Chinatown. Great meal!

The food was very good. Stand out was the beef in xo cube. Would like to go back and try more dishes. Good value for money as well

Not such a great place. The food was mediocre and expensive. I will definitely not to back. I ordered seafood with Japanese tufu. I didn't see any seafood in there the tufu was certainly not Japanese.

The service was excellent and quick. Food was tasty, presented well. It has a private dining room if you wish for family gatherings.

Chine on paramount at Chinatown. I was invited by friends therefore they chose this restaurant for dinner. Personally I don’t think it is good and not sure why it is so popular and high ranking in certain websites. The yuxiang eggplant hotpot was the only dish I like and others are just soso.

We came here for a pre-show dinner on a Saturday night. Though the prices seem a bit high we found the food to be really delicious. The service at first was a little slow as we got there just as an influx of other people, but once we said we were going to see a show, they picked up the pace. We would come again.

we love coming here everytime we are in Melbourne. we come from country Victoria and it's so nice to know we will always eat well when come down.
The staff are always friendly and very helpful. The food is always amazing no matter what we order.

We booked a Exploring private menu with the boss in the new function room, always a quality food and good service for us. especially, the frozen snow crab in baijiu and leopard coral grouper.

The worst meal ever!
Yum cha very cold!! Tasted like frozen!!!
As we were having lunch i saw a guy arguing about his bill saying they over charged him! As we got our bill we realised they did the same to us!! everything we ordered they said we ordered large when we specifically ordered small!!
The yum cha was half the size of most places and 3 times the price!! 3 small prawn dumplings $9.80
Con artists!!! please stay away they need to learn a lesson

So so Chinese food with good service. The food was below average at high prices. To be honest I've had better Chinese at decent suburban Chinese restaurants.

The worst dining experience ever.
My meal came out first, I was waiting and waiting for the meal of my friend to come out, I finally decided to start and when i looked down, A HAIR was found in my meal. We alerted the waiter. They just took the plate away in a rush, no apology, no explanation of what was going to happen.
The second meal came and now I was waiting. Then my meal came and it was cold. I think they simply took out the hair and resent out.
The food was bland and cold.
The staff were rude and the service appalling.
We only came in here as it looked like we were would get served quickly as it was empty. That should have been an indication that something was not right.
The thought of that hair has me dry reaching now.
DO NOT GO THERE.

Expensive on paramount. To me Yum Cha traditionally is a trolley with steaming piles of delicacies surrounded in bamboo. They say you eat with your eyes first - however this place just have you order from the menu. 1st disappointment. When your order arrives 2nd disappointment - what I am positive are made off premises and then defrosted only enough that you don't chip a tooth. 3rd disappointment- when the bill arrives. Shu mai had a weird aftertaste but I will give credit when it's due - well they didn't ruin the Chinese tea ;). $90 lighter for a meal that should have set you back $30-40. If you are looking for value for money - "move along - nothing to see here".

i went here with my school and i swear to god we are all sick now. as a vegetarian, you gave me fried tofu (extremely soggy) and some form of vegetable (couldn't even bite into it, so undercooked) and i left extremely disappointed and hungry. your staff was rude and i hope for the sake of every living person that your restaurant gets shut down. don't ever go here, ever.

This is terrible experience I ever had. Terrible service, cold food, wasted long time to wait for nothing( been told food have to wait until the food is ready also not ready for order.?). Wasted our time and the bill was expensive. Don't waste your time and money on here!
Stopped here because everything else was booked out. The staff were friendly, the entree of quail tasty but everything else that followed- disappointing. The bill was expensive for what it was and I will never be dining here again.

Update: I went home feeling sick, nauseous and was terrified about getting food poisoning! Whenever I think of the food I ate here I feel physically ill.

We stopped here for dinner before heading to the Theatre & before reading reviews. Food was ok, dumplings not that great but mains were a bit tastier. King prawns were amazing! Our waiter was pleasant & helpful but the other staff not that friendly. Prices pretty average but the banana fritter & icecream was perfect! Probably will try somewhere else next time.

Fantastic!!. We went today for YumCha, it was fabulous! The food was stunning and the wait staff were so attentive! We normally go to Shark Fin Inn but today we were sent away as they were too busy - thank you SFI!! We found another place that has better food - like the tempura fried prawns and the duck spring rolls!!
.

Pre Frozen Dumplings! Pork dumplings were filled with water and over cooked! Spring roll wasn't great! Not great food nor service, disappointing.

Still a lovely premium restaurant for a good meal in Chinatown. Having eaten here periodically for over 10 years I still love the food quality. Today I ordered scallops in ginger sauce along with a small special fried rice & again enjoyed a flavoursome meal. The service provision was unfortunately overshadowed when other customers were given hot face washers automatically, whereas I had to ask for mine after my meal, suggesting a lack of consistency in procedure. The restaurant still has it's great tranquil ambience assisting one to relax away from the hustle & bustle of city life.

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Whoa whoa whoa.....hang on you want to order cocktails.....whoa whoa whoa....you want to order more food.....whoa whoa whoa.....just place the menu gently down on the table sir...and now with your hand in tre BACK AWAY....BACK AWAY....SLOWLY...
No you cannot have any thing other than the 3 dumplings and the grease on grease..... Although you can have EXTRA grease...Extra old grease..... And now that's the last you'll see of me, just like the waiter and service....!

We went here the other night before heading to the theatre. The restaurant was busy as you'd expect on a Friday night . Waiter was rude - one of our guests asked what would be safe for her to eat as she had nut allergies and msg allergies his answer was 'nothing ' . Eventually we established she could have some veg and some soup . The wine list though extensive they do not stock or have no idea what you are asking for. My friend and I shared a chicken dish which believed was a chicken & vegetable dish - it was just that chicken diced up in some soy based sauces with bok choy! No carrots no broccoli nothing !
One man at our table got carrots on his vegetable mix! Lucky for him !
The rice was ok pre cooked pork in there which was ok no char sui though. Service was very ordinary . Very disorganised and frankly quite rude.

Great value. After walking all day in and around Melbourne we were looking for a great meal at a good price and Chine on Paramount delivered! Pork dumplings and wonton soup entrees were great. For mains we had special fried rice, honey chicken and beef satay. I highly recommend the beef satay! Service was excellent and attentive, a great experience!

ABSOLUTE DOGMEAT!!! Do yourself a favour and starve before wasting money here. The dumplings made me physically gag and the beef wasn't fit for human consumption, worst meal I have ever had. It's a shame to write such a scathing review however these Resturant owners are ripping people off with this garbage. I wouldn't eat here again if they paid me!!!!!!!

Bad Service. Tried to book online wouldnt work so I called direct.. took over 20min to order and 1hour to deliver when they said 30min!

Ruined valentines day. Truly awful. The place was encouragingly packed on valentines day (Friday, 14/2/2014) but the staff we not coping, yelling at each other. My boyfriend and I were placed at a booth seat meant for six people with only two plates set for us, they forgot to give us cutlery until we asked, twice. the staff were rude to each other and to some other customers. There was only two young waitresses that were holding the place together. The food made us both sick. the traditional sweet and sour pork was jaw grinding tough. We've been sick for the next two days and wasted our weekend inside our hotel room. never again!

Very disappointed. Food was of really poor quality & very expensive. Peking duck was very fatty & chewy. Chicken in lemon chicken very dry. At nearly $30 for a main, extremely annoying. Will not be going back.

Excellent Food, Excellent Price, Friendly Waiter

Always visit Chinecwhen we come to Melb. Great yum cha & service. Recommended.

We arrived for yum cha at 1pm on a cold Sunday to find an almost empty restaurant. Yum Cha was ordered off a menu with no trolleys coming around.
Prawns dumplings were great, but pretty top prices with most dishes being around $9.80.
To me, there are better and cheaper choices around.
Jase XL
Not the greatest selection of yum cha dishes. Dumplings are ordered off the menu, not from a lady with a cart.

Food is ordinary service is awful !! NO

Love, Love, Love. My husband and I decided to take a chance on the place and we're so glad we did! The food is absolutely delicious (especially the prawn and chive dumplings!) and the service wonderful. Some things were priced a little higher than other places, but it is well worth it. We decided on yum cha for two and had a big feast along with drinks for only $85. Those with a smaller budget would be easily satisfied as well.

Family run & always do their best to please. Excellent value for money in Chinatown. Great wine list. Service with a smile & a whole lot of courtesy.

Never order the roast duck. All bones, lack of meat and is not worth $10.00+ dishes are average and some well known dishes for dim sum are not included in the menu which is disappointing. Service and ambience is ok. Price is ok for some dishes. Don't like it overall.
