A lovely relaxing quiet dining option at the NGV if you want to get away from the crowds at the cafe on the ground floor.  Prices are slightly higher but the cafe on the ground floor is not cheap either.  Must book the night before to secure a table on a busy day (weekends/ school holidays).  The food is usually quite nice and our fav is the finger sandwiches. With no bookings, you might have to sit on at the "bar" on a high stool which can be quite uncomfortable.    The service has improved a lot recently and I hope it will get even better to earn a better rating here at zomato.

This place was such a great find, one of new favourites. The prosciutto pizza was fresh and delicious. It had an amazing crust and they used a great quality prosciutto, which is always a winner. The steak was cooked to perfection, it melted in your mouth and was so succulent. The charcuterie board was amazing, a great selection of meats, everyone individual and tasty. We also added the cheese too and what a good idea that was. The soft and indulgent mozzarella was a nice surprise, it was drizzled with a delicious olive oil, sprinkled with salt and pepper. The cheeses also consisted of gouda and a gorgonzola, these were delicious too. I will definitely be going back to this spot soon.

The coffee here is well worth the treat after looking through the NGV. The coffee was smooth, the staff were polite and well presented. The menu in general is very expensive.

The tea room was a nice experience and had a relaxing ambience compared to the cafe on ground floor. We had the chicken chorizo sandwich and the scones. Such a nice combination, freshly made and the food is of great quality and the coffee was great! Service was friendly and efficient and they topped up our jam and cream. Glad  to enjoy a brunch or afternoon tea in the tea room.

Nice little tea room at the gallery. Nice food. I had soup of the day which was beetroot. The soup itself was very nice. Spot on. It promised garnish but had almost none, sadly. The little cheese type sandwich which came with it was lovely. I had a cappuccino to finish and it was excellent. Creamy, tasty and very well made. Service was polite and efficient. My three colleagues were similarly happy. The cost was rather high but such is life. I'd happily return.

MESSY HIGH TEA -- Located on the 3rd floor of the NGV International, the Tea Room offers High Tea at 57 bucks per head, a glass of bubbly included, or two pots of tea if you don't drink alcohol. My first High Tea at the TR was good regarding food and tea, but not good regarding everything else.

GOOD  FOOD
I found the food great regarding quality of ingredients, amount of food served, cooking expertise and taste of the food on offer. I could not finish the 3-tier serving tray.

The lower tray had a selection of mini-sandwiches: Smoked salmon with chive cream cheese, classic egg and cress, coronation chicken, cucumber and dill, and cheese and pickles. All of them were  super-fresh and utterly delicious. Despite being classics and simple, they tasted great. Only the cucumber one was a bit meh.

The second tray had scones with Chantilly cream and raspberry jam. I thought they were OK, a bit too dense and floury for me.

The upper tray had the sweets: Pecan tart with spiced poached pear; egg custard tart with nutmeg;  kumquat financier; matcha and yuzu eclair, and brandy snap. All of them were top-notch, but the eclair and the pecan tart were my favourites.

On a side plate were served three hot canapes: Mini-lamb shank pativier, Mushroom and truffle quiche, and a five spices duck breast with orange marmalade and taro chip. All of them fine cooking, flavoursome and delectable. Loved the trio.

Besides, they have a large good-quality selection of teas:  black, flavoured black, herbal tisanes, white teas, green teas and flower teas. I had one  the Sencha teas, and the Grand Yunnan, the latter was fabulous.

BAD THINGS
> Bad service, actually a mess. They needed at least another staff member when I visited to to attend to the avalanche of customers already seated and cueing to be seated. This is a pricey place, why are they short of staff?
> Some of the staff were nice, especially the male manager,  but others bordered rudeness, and the service was overall careless, unfriendly, hurried and, at times, unprofessional. Examples:
>>>The food tray was put in front of my nose, literally, and I had to rearrange things myself because it was impossible starting eating otherwise.
>>>> When I asked for a piggy bag, a box was put on my table for me to pack it myself.
>>> Empty cups and dishes are not removed from the table until you leave or request the waiters to do so.
>  I booked online, in advance, via email and I exchanged several emails about timing, replacements etc. Upon arrival, my booking was not there. I was lucky enough that there was an empty table at peak hour; otherwise I would have to go elsewhere. The waitress who attended to me first asked me to show the emails... Would I lie? The person with whom I booked and exchanged some emails happened to be there as well, and when I told her what has happened, she blamed the system.  Yes,sure, then fix the system or do not offer booking online or by email. And she introduced my data manually, I blame her not the system.
> Paper serviettes for High Tea... is not High Tea.
> Noisy crowded place.

It is a pity that the good work of the chef/s  is wasted by the slovenly service.

Put yourselves up guys, or decrease the price of the High Tea!

The Tea Room – a welcomed addition to the new version of the NGV monolith. It is quaint and a little posh, perfectly placed within the gallery to rest your feet and discuss art or just gossip.

“Our scones are the best in the world,” he practically sung. He said it with such conviction, so we weren’t about to argue... the scones lived up to the hype. Warm and soft in the middle with strawberry jam and silky cream, they were incredibly nostalgic.

The high tea and Devonshire tea were delicious, but the service was atrocious, and it wasn't even too busy.

The best way to top off you splendid outing at the NGV, is by visiting The Tea Rooms inside the gallery. I had some of the most delicious strawberry & peanut butter macaroons here with a friend. Coffee was also good quality & service friendly. Will visit when I come back to the NGV again.

Great Service, Great Food.. Today my family and I decided to go to the NGV Tea Rooms for High Tea, and what a great decision it was. After booking a few days before, we were seated right away on arrival and served a glass of water each. After this a waitress came to confirm high tea for five and get our tea orders. (Quite a wide selection and included cappuccinos/coffee or hot chocolate. We were also able to order more of each when we finished them, which were included in the high tea price.) After a short wait we received our dinks and food. The Lower tier consisted of two sandwich squares per person and two savoury pastries, all delicious. The second tier was the scone tier with a scone each with cream and jam. The top tier was perhaps my favourite with the petit fours on it there was a selection of five pieces each. This is possibly one of the best high tea's I have enjoyed and for $35 per person it was well worth the money. Perhaps my favourite thing about this was there was a piece of everything each so that you did not miss out on tasting something. It is always disappointing when you have a high tea and do not have a chance to taste the lovely looking cake because they did not give you enough of that type. All of the food was high quality and the ambiance of the NGV was delightful and the way the tables were set was better than some of the high teas I have been to at much pricier establishments. This is really one of Melbourne’s hidden secrets. Paired with a stroll around the gallery we really had an affordable day out in the city.

I love walking through the NGV to be met by warm fluffy buttery scones. I keep finding myself returning to this place even though the prices are a little tough on the wallet.

More tea darling?. I visited the Tea Rooms at the NGV with a couple of my girlfriends last Sunday for morning tea. The Tea Room is tucked away neatly on the second floor of the NGV. The decor is simple but welcoming, with all the elegance of a modern gallery.

My friends and I shared the afternoon tea set (consisting of sweets, savouries and scones) with an additional serve of sandwiches and scones. When we ordered, we thought it would not be enough but it was surprisingly filling and we were all too full by the end of it. We chose Darjeeling as the accompanying tea. It was very full-bodied and perfect for offsetting the sweetness of the cakes.

Tea at the Tea Room was a lovely experience. It is the perfect setting for a lovely 'ladylike' chat with your closest girlfriends.

I felt like a proper English lady sipping tea and nibbling on scones. I'll shave my beard and wear a dress next time. Awesome stuff.

Tea for two (or more). The Tea Room at the NGV was a great choice for Mothers Day - although they were very busy, we really enjoyed the teeny cakes, scones and pastries as well as some interesting options on the tea menu.
You can order extras from the cabinet if you find the standard afternoon tea isn't enough but it's amazing how quickly teeny food will fill you up. Macarons in various shades are available as well as assorted cakes and cookies. I hear the hot chocolate is also a winner.

High Tea delight. I love coming here for an Afternoon Tea. The price for High Tea is VERY good at $45 for 2 people. And the fun size delicacies of scones, sandwiches, macaroons, mini pastries and mini savouries is well worth the money! The pastries are themselves the kind you would expect in a high end bakery and the tea range is great, not just the standard English Breakfast but with a little more international diversity. You can sit next to the balcony overlooking the passers by in the NGV or next to the mirror lined Alice in Wonderland like wall.
