Review Ricky & Pinky - Melbourne

This is most definitely NOT the Chinese restaurant you remember from childhood with nary a sweet and sour pork tidbit to be seen! An interesting selection of dishes and an exceptional wine list make this a great place to come to celebrate life. Bring the credit card as it is definitely not your neighbourhood Chinese prices...

we had the lamb pancakes but had to send them back because the lamb was to salty. The yuck taste of the salt aside I think the recipe is flawed and really needs some sweetness to balance the flavors. The staff were nice and offered us another dish. We just took some fried rice which was ok. It has a nice atmosphere and I am sure some of the other dishes would be nicer.

If you are a foodie like me this is the place to go. I had the banquet which involved small but several dishes of many varieties. The food tasted excellent and I enjoyed my time there. The staff were fantastic especially Florence however she did have to finish her shift during the meal, I was gutted. Would eat there again I loved it.

A most enjoyable experience from the outset. Friendly and informative wait staff. Adaptable to the fact that one of us was a meat eater and the other one wasn't. Told us how we could tweek the menu so we could do half serves and thereby get a greater selection of the menu. And the food was awesome. Recommend this place.

A delicious Asian inspired food menu in Fitzroy style sharing plates, however certainly not Yum Cha. Tea can be found hidden at the back of the wine menu, keep looking it is there. Serving sizes are a little small and not balanced to the number of diners. Quite a wait for dishes (I guess they do cook to order). Whilst the food was tasty, expectations of a Chinese Yum Cha from Andrew McConnell were set, and this is most definitely not a Chinese Yum Cha restaurant.

It's been awhile since I've a decent dessert that is delicate in flavour and in harmony with its ingredients. A must-try is the coconut, lychee granita with strawberries. The service was friendly and attentive, creating a relaxing environment to enjoy a meal.

Whilst the food and service was really good, I couldnt help but feel that for the price I could get a better experience at a number of top Chinese restaurants for a cheaper price. Chinese food has many wonderful secrets that havent seen the light of day, and some earnest restauraneur can have a great time exposing them. But I couldnt escape the gnawing feeling that the crowd who lavish this place are only there because its been packaged in a nice trendy anglo package and marketed to cashed-up fashionistas. That was also coupled with my bemusement at the repurposing of the Builders Arms into a super-bourgeois space.

Some ambition...but execution falls far short, of both cheap Chinese restaurants and of what Ricky / Pinky is actually aiming for. Some dishes seem ill conceived, or simply incomplete - the highlight was delectable but amateurishly over spiced. Had high hopes but was highly disappointed.
