Review Nara - Melbourne

Edwar Kartio
Great local Thai in the St Kilda road vicinity. The dishes are pretty authentic and the Thai sausage is something different that I haven't seen anywhere else. Be careful when asking to make the dish spicy as it will burn a little! One current favourite for a quick bite within the area. Food - 8 Service - 8 Vibe - 8 Price - $$

I've been to Thailand and I love Thai foods. I'm sure Nara is the best Melbourne Thai restaurant. If you want most decent Thai food with awesome price this is the place to go! They also have tab Singha beer as well which is freaking awesome

Pretty tasty food in decent portions :) I think they kinda captured the street food aesthetic and style while retaining a modern feel to the restaurant. Service was amazing and atmosphere well crafted to deliver a top dining experience at this respective price point!

Having worked around the corner from here, I don't know why I have never tried the food earlier. I can honestly say it's some of the best Thai food I've eaten. It was a very busy lunch service yet the food came out in around 18 seconds. It was piping hot and extremely flavourful. When you add to that the reasonable prices and good size servings, I'll be back :)

Green curry was fabulous. Great spicy flavour and reasonably priced. This restaurant has a nice interior and the staff are friendly, service is good.

Went to the new dumpling restaurant around the corner but it was closed so tried Nara for the first time. We went for our standard dishes to try them out. Massaman and beef with basil. Delicious. Some of the best I've had. They alsi managed to find the hottest chillis! Bun and dumpling to start was ok, nothing special. Will go back. Not expensive either.

been to here once and fall in love with the food, really really good to taste and the interior is amazing

Basil pork not as spicy as I thought it'll be but still overall tasty. Would suggest the green curry if you wanted something spicier

The food was precooked - I should have trusted my instinct and not ordered but thought at least try, the caremilsed pork was more like dry crackling that had been made the day before. Both meals were like eating leftovers really over cooked. The waitress said it was all pre made therefore it took Them 3 mins to reheat. The curry had been made hours beforehand which they told me and therefore all the vegetables were really mushy. Never ever been to a Thai restaurant before that the food wasn’t cooked fresh.

Nearly all of the food was much too sweet. I know that some Thai food is often sweet, but this restaurant definitely overdoes it.

First visit and will be back... food is fast fresh and a good price... service is good the restaurant clean... make sure enjoy the caramelised pork and the pad Thai... awesome!!!

I went to Nara Thai today for my farewell work lunch and it’s a real shame I’ve only just discovered it’s deliciousness. It was super reasonable pricing and the pad see ew was super yummy, plenty of flavour and the service was impressively quick.

I also enjoyed the atmosphere the only issue was a bit of confusion in the ordering. We had five chicken pad Thai at the table and one pork. All of dishes were announced as chicken but then when someone said one was pork they randomly said oh this one is pork in a very unconvincing manner. I’m pretty convinced it was also chicken and realistically they should have just remade the dish. One of them may have eaten pork who knows!

We came here for dinner and tried the recommended caramelised pork belly and Tom sap pork soft bone soup and they didn’t disappoint. The caramelised pork was crispy and has the right sweetness to it but the soup is the star.. it was so flavourful and well balanced seasoned love the combination of sour, salty and spicy! My daughter wanted to try the soup but it was a tad to spicy for her. The waitress kindly offered to make a pork soup for the kids (not on menu) but alas it was a different kind of soup. The one they made for the kids was sweet and used pork minced and vegetables. Although it is still nice in flavour it cannot beat the Tom sap soup. I wish they made the option of spicy and non spicy.
Overall we loved the food here and will definitely come.back for the soup!

It seems that people really like the food here. Maybe I just went on a bad night. I asked what the most popular dish was and was recommended the Pad Thai. The flavour was okay. But the rice noodles were over cooked and gluggy. They were in small pieces and also seemed really oily. Based on that one dish, I wouldn't come here again. My friend had a dish with minced pork, green beans and rice. She seemed to like it. It looked a lot better than mine. The beef in mine was really chewy. It didn't seem to have been marinated at all.

Near to my office, coworkers and I orders fried rice, stir fried noodles (chicken and beef)... noodles were a bit oily. Fried rice was ok. Friendly waitress and not too long for waiting :)

We usually get takeaway when in the area and love the flavours of the dishes.

On this occasion, we decided to eat in. The decor gives off a street food vibe and for a Friday lunch time, the store was packed. I ordered the pad thai, my favourite chive dumplings, and my colleague got the green curry and chicken skewers. While we originally didn't mind the 30 minutes wait for our food, sitting near the kitchen became unbearable with all the smoke from the cooking and lack of ventilation.

When the food arrived it was delicious, fresh, and flavoursome; living up to my usual expectations. However unfortunately my appetite was a bit put off by the abrupt behaviour of the staff when asked for cutlery and their slow service. Would recommend the food but not a great place to dine in.

3.5
A Thai restaurant with nice ambience.

Came during lunch time, place packed with mostly workers. The place was nice though, pretty spacious with big windows. The staffs weren't very friendly as they were too busy as the place was definitely understaffed. Food took a while and the staff asked whether or not we'll have roti instead of rice because they ran out of rice. We had no option so we said yes. I did ask if it was possible to give us rice after it's cooked and thankfully they did.

The green beef curry was great. The curry was a kick of spicy and flavor which I enjoyed, beef chunks were good size and tender, with nice crunch from the green beans and soft mini eggplants.
Roti was quite good, not too buttery nor flaky just right, though portion was bit small.
Rice was bit overcooked though, but still pretty generous.
Prawn pad thai was enjoyable, prawns were good size and fresh, taste was pretty good, though the noodle used wasn't the normal flat rice noodles more like vermicille, and they were tad bit overcooked. There were no peanuts nor chili flakes on the sides either, though there was lime wedges which we squeezed thoroughly on top of the noodle.

Overall, this place has a lot of potential, food was filling with good lunch price, but still could be improved but more so the service and wait time.

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle.

This place is so so good. Every single thing we ordered was delicious. Including fried rice, pad see ew and particularly the beef massaman curry. I would say it’s the best massaman I have ever had! I don’t know why it took me so long to try this place but I will definitely be coming back.
Streaky Eats
This area is not known for a lot of food options, but this place has something special to offer. We ordered fish ball, kra pao minced pork, tom saap, fried rice with crab meat, and to wash it down, Thai milk tea.

The fish ball came in three skewers, with three fish balls on each skewer. The fish balls are dunked in a wet batter before frying and it creates a nice slightly crispy layer before the firm but bouncy flesh inside. The dish is covered with Thai sweet chili sauce, might be a bit too smothered for some but otherwise it's a nice combination. You can tell that the fish ball itself had a decent amount of seasoning that went into it which makes this starter dish worth getting.

The tom saap is a hot and sour soup served with generous amount of pork soft bone. The cut can be described as the end of the rib and the soft bone can be eaten as is. The soup was extremely flavourful and stimulates your appetite further.

The fried rice with crab meat may look simple, that's because it has everything it needs to make you want more (we did exactly that with a second order of this). It has noticeable amount of peeled crab meat and it's cooked with this sauce that really adds a real umami layer.

The kra pao with minced pork is good but nothing extraordinary, with a lighter than usual appearance.

The Thai milk tea was served in a small bottle. Taste is definitely there and not a weak tea. When served over ice, it's a perfect thirst quencher and doubles as the perfect finisher to the meal.

Had a casual dinner here with a couple of friends and had an enjoyable meal. I had the spicy noodle with chicken with a side of chicken wings - both of which were delicious!

The ambience was nothing out of the ordinary but comfortable. Staff were friendly and service was efficient.
Chloe Leung
Loved this place! We had the pad see ew, spring rolls, coconut rice, roti and eggplant dish. Super super delicious and very reasonably priced. Friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere, 100% recommend this joint to everyone
Food Food Food
Yes, it was really a street food restaurant! Most of the dishes had a very strong flavour, very sour and very sweet, but not very spicy! All food and steam rice were served on vintage zinc trays or plates! Overall, food was average! Food price is the same like other Thai restaurants! Service was slow because there was only one waitress working (Not recommend if you were very hungry or in a rush)! Restaurant environment is decorated like thai street environment and the Rest room was not very clean! If you don’t like the street food environment and do not like your food to be served on old metal/falcon plates/trays! Then I don’t really recommend this restaurant!
FoodforThought
This place serves one of the best Thai food around in terms of quality and value. The prices are cheaper and the portions are big. The tom yum soup was well balanced with a generous serve of 4 prawns and the stir fry was packed with beef, veggies and oomph.

The food here is pretty good but they have an odd $20 minimum for card. I don’t know why these places put these weird arbitrary minimums on when paying EFTPOS. Disappointing as I had to change my order just to make up 10cents. Not sure the food is worth always having to have cash.
Sivashankar Sivam
Got the chilli pork belly and beans on rice.

The spice hit was great, taste wise it was a tad too salty and oozing with too much oil.

For a place that serves a small serve of white rice and a little bit of the meat to accompany the dish, I’m not too sure if the price really hit the spot. But I guess they could charge that price because there was no other eatery nearby.

And this gets onto my nerves but they charge 50cents more for Eftpos. Poor form. Won’t ever return

I'm always on a hunt for good and reasonable Thai food. Nara Thai is very reasonable and serves amazing food. I have tried their Green Curry, Pad Thai and Cashew Chicken. Everything is delicious here. Visit here for lunch if you are around South Melbourne.

Ordered Thai green curry with rice and Thai fried rice. Wasn’t a great fan of the green curry rice as it had too much oil. But the Thai fried rice tasted authentic. So if you are planning on having a meal over here I would suggest you have the fried rice over the Green curry rice.
StepiiGM
It's hard not to love the place! Great decoration and awesome food. Deep fried fish was beyond my expectation 😊 the dipping sauce however, was a bit too sour for me.
Noodles were great, but my husband's not liking the crispy pork somehow.
Amy123
The food here reminds me of meals I've had in Thailand. Fresh and not too heavy, unlike so called Thai food I've had in the suburbs which are often very oily and sweet.

The deep fried barramundi with apple salad was amazing. The fish was sweet and the salad very refreshing, drizzled with a sauce that had a little kick. Yum!

My only gripe is that some of the items I wanted to try were not available, including all the desserts!

We look forward to coming back again, hopefully the entire menu will be on offer.

Oh, yes the service was very good. Food came quickly and the waitress was very polite and attentive.
Wayne McDermott
After a good start when it opened, the service and food went downhill fast. I am please to say in recent months we have been a dozen times the food AND is excellent each time. CONGRATULATIONS.
Ganda Keren
I went there with my Wife on 17 August 2017 for dinner.
The food was very nice and the waitress was very friendly and helpful.
The Food arrive very quick as well.
And the Restaurant is clean and not noisy at all.
I will go to this restaurant a lot more often in the future.
Highly recommended

Certainly a must to visit for those who crave Thai food the way it's done in Thailand. Not to be confused with Australian Thai food. Great food at great prices with very little to complain about
Shaobu
The quality has gone down everytime I visit.

The Crispy Pork are so dry, yet crispy because they have been re-fried, re-frigerated, and re-fried.

Chef, please take note of this, and serve us some fresh and juicy crispy pork please.
Nikita Theodora
Lovely place, yummy food and good service!
Ordered the deep fried barramundi and green curry and they're both tasty, although the curry was a tad too salty if you eat it without rice. But overall really satisfied.
Nannoo
Excellent Thai! Love their authentic green curry and the fact that you can ask for " Thai Spicy" spice levels in the food! Favourite takeaway! Decor in the restaurant is that of a Thai Kitchen.
Bkash
Good. Authentic Thai food with a bang factor. It's not too expensive and good Asian beer. The crispy pork is the go to dish which can be complimented by mango snapper.!
My partner and I go to Nara Thai Street Food each week as locals in the area. The food is authentic and delicious, the service is always accommodating, friendly and homely. And the food is cooked in a timely manner for hungry guests.
Prices are standard, however the taste value equation should translate to a more expensive menu, so you're getting bang for buck at Nara Thai Street Food.
Parking around the area is free after 6pm and there are always tables available for small or larger groups.

I would highly recommend Nara Thai Street Food to everyone.

Horrible customer services. There is a lot of touts that reviewed over rating below. I ordered massaman beef, pad Thai chicken and others, they were cooked very long time. Waitress have never token care of customer. All menu I had were very oily. Not feeling authentic Thai food. I tried many Thai restaurants here such as Jinda Thai, Middle Fish or Ying Thai, they are better in both of services and taste. If you guys would like to spend for good food and service. Absolutely not this restaurant. If you need some food around there, Mc Donald or any junk food is better.

Truly amazing, authentic Thai food. Highly underrated and not known well enough a restaurant. I've lived on Park Street, walking past the restaurant daily to and fro from work. From the outside, it looks nicely decorated to give that Thai street food feel. I always thought of trying, but I didn't until today - and after today I sure wish I tried it sooner!

Firstly, the taste of the food was a pleasant surprise to me. I wasn't expecting anything special, but it was well and truly delicious. It has been the most authentic tasting (and I'm not exaggerating here) Thai food I've had in Melbourne. I've tried the big names of Jinda Thai, Middle Fish, and Ying Thai, and although no doubt that do have good food, Nara brings you to a new level and experience of Thai dining.

The portions were very generous! The better portion size I've seen so far I dare say and very well priced.

I had their fried barramundi, crispy pork and Chinese broccoli, and pork bond soup. I couldn't pick it favourite and in fact it was difficult to even choose these 3 because there were so much more I wanted to try.

All I can say is that I will definitely be back for more and to try more of their menu. I'd expect many more satisfying visits. Definitely worthwhile trying and hopefully (although only a year old) they get more patrons - because they deserve it! Don't fight for a table with a time limit on it at the usual restaurants. Try something new and ome to Nara. You'll be well pleased, just as I am.

Loooove this place! Foods taste so good with a reasonable price and portion. My top 3: Prik Khing crispy pork, massaman beef curry and pad thai. The lady who served us is also very kind. Been there 3 times for the last 2 weeks :)
James Lewis
Excellent food flavours. Careful and attentive service. We had the beef curry and crispy pork. Very reasonable prices. We loved the meal. Would recommend this place.

Came here many times with colleague or friend for both lunch or dinner, food always good.
My favourite food there is Ka Nah Crispy Pork and Pat See ew.

Service is good too, if you can handle extra spicyness i recommend asking for extra HOT.

Price is reasonable, asking for extra meat cost a little extra but worth it.

Overall, very authentic and delicious food, will definitely go back there again and try every single food from the menu.
MallyMelbs
Doesn't look like much and to be honest I've never seen more than a handful of customers but it is the best Thai in Melbourne. So fresh and the staff so friendly! The choo chee salmon is phenomenal and I highly recommend it.
Pete
Great food and very friendly staff. I love the chicken Pad Thai and the little fish cake things. Very accommodating to large groups as well.

We ordered prawn fried rice on the phone, but they changed to crab meat fried rice instead. However, we never find any crab meat in the crab meat fried rice. Interesting experience. Paid $18+ for the pain fried rice.

Been here many times and the hard working waitress is so helpful often waiting tables by herself . I also travel to thailand 5 times per year and the food here is just as good if not better than in Thailand ,great food reasonable prices and friendly staff .
Isabelle Le Guay
Was disappointed with an excessively spicy dish which I could barely start, let alone finish. The most peeving part of my experience was however to report it to an infinitely sorry waitress who agreed to pass on the feedback to the kitchen but still had me paid the full amount for the 4 mouth full I had. Other than that food has been good in my previous experience and plentiful. Service is however making a big impact.
RuShion Tseng
The service is 5 stars! Nice! ! ! Good recommendation for the dishes. The waitress won't push you to the costly dishes which they don't have, but the dishes that suit you. For instance, she suggested small coconut ice cream cost $6.9 for me and my friend who only have a small room for the food. Will bring my another friends to come again. Great great great!

Very excited to discover this little gem around the corner from my new workplace. Food is authentic and tasty with large portions and a very small price tag! Definitely my Friday lunch treat spot for the foreseeable future!!
Bree
We love our new local thai! I love the tofu pad thai - the best I've had! All meals are pretty spicy though, be prepared! I don't think they deliver yet, but hoping they will!
CommndoBob
Been going here since they opened, dishes have gotten bit more expensive and portions a bit smaller since they opened. The food is generally good. After trying lots of things i mostly only go here for the Eggplant Cashew Nut Chilli Jam which is something I crave now and then.Had a few bad experiences with slow service due to the fact at night time there was only 1 waiter serving the entire place. Happened a couple time. I would recommend getting take away here
Yolanda Wong
Food tastes very authentic and delicious. But on the oily and sweet side.

Prices are reasonable, the portion is not too large for me to consume.

As many reviews highlight, the waiting time can be very long. Normally, 15 minutes after your order, but can be longer
Ngoan Pham
Can't say enough of how good the food is here. The best authentic Thai I've ever tasted in Melbourne . We go there quite often and have never been let down by any dish. First time tried the Masaman curry I told them it was nice but the cut had too much fat. This time I got it again and it was perfect. Very happy they take the feedback seriously. I wish people would give it a try and see for themselves as it seems the crowd has not been as good as Peko Peko in the same area.
Shaun
Don't believe most of the reviews you read here. This restaurant produces the most authentic Thai food in Melbourne. Everyone who appreciates and loves Thai food needs to give this s try.

Their food is unadulterated and not modified for the local palate. Sick of seeing green curry with carrots, cabbage, capsicum, broccoli!!!! Nobody does that in Thailand. Please keep your food this way and never change!!!
Tiffany Xu
Bad experience! Waited for more than 40 minutes but never got our food, will not come again.................................................
Michives
Serving staff were fine, food came out pretty fast. Food was very tasty but servings were small for the price, we all left still a bit hungry. They don't do split bills which is annoying for a larger group
Paul Borhani
I like the food specially pad Thai as it is so delicious, but they are ridiculously slow. If you want to eat here, allow at least an hour. But you get good food most probably !
Einney
The price of their food is sooo cheap. Can't really expect too much for such cheap price. We ordered some Pad thai takeaway, couldn't taste much apart from MSG. Kitchen was really slow, took a long time in waiting for a small takeaway (i think they were understaffed, only saw one guy in the kitchen). Not recommended.
Hiddenbimbo
Discovered this eatery by chance and was very impressed with the quality of food served up. I can say that this place is worth the visit and value for its money. Definitely beats those in the main CBD area itself. It would be good if they could hire more service staff. They had only 1 staff running around to clear the tables, take orders over the phone and at the table as well as serve the table which resulted in a delay in service. Other than that I would definitely recommend the visit
Beini
Nara Thai Street Food is one of the newer additions to South Melbourne, although it's pretty much in the CBD. It's filled with knick knacks that are reminiscent of the street of Thailand - not that I've been, but hey, I've seen of pictures. Over the top of the restaurant, there was a rainbow pennant, giving the space an inviting and playful vibe.
Scuffedeats
I love this little local that has opened up! It doesn't look awesome from the outside, but we've been here a couple of times and the food is always fresh and incredibly tasty.

It's really well priced (about $40 for dinner for two). Perfect for a lazy weeknight dinner!

Synesthesia2011
colourful dishes, fresh ingredients, great tastes, but ever diminishing portion sizes??? regularly order No.11 and each time i do it just gets smaller and smaller??? how do you politely bring this up with the staff???
HungryMe
I am so happy this has opened up in my neighbourhood! Authentic, affordable and a great interior fit out. I have been here numerous times and the food never fails. I am slowly making my way throughout the entire menu, so far everything has been a winner! The spicy level is Thai standard, so if you can't handle heat, make sure to order mild! However, if you are like me who loves spicy food, then go big!
TheChaiLatteGirl
I visited this place last night with my husband and all the food we ordered were delicious. The "Pla Sam Rot" (crispy deep fried snapper in 3 flavoured sauce) was cooked just right. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender. The "Som Tum" (green papaya salad) was refreshing and the spiciness was done to our liking. The pork soft bone with hot yellow chilli was full of flavour and went so well with rice. We didn't order any drinks but ordered two serves of rice. Dinner for two people = $53.70.

If you are after some authentic Thai street food that you can't get from most Thai restaurants, this is the place to be. However, if you are only after some Thai curry dishes that you'd normally get in most other Thai restaurants, this may not be the place for you.
This has now become our new favouite Thai place in Melbourne.
Alejandro Alvarenga
Absolutely phenomenal. Finally, authentic Thai food. After a second visit I tried the Patee Thai and it was on point. Great food, great service would definitely come back.
David Tso
Recently tried this restaurant having walked past it countless times and have been back twice now for dinner. Wish we had gone sooner.

Had both the crispy roast pork dishes which were delicious, but the beef green curry was the best - large chunks of melt in your mouth beef in a nice sauce.

Atmosphere and service are nice. People saying it takes a while for food to come out, but we haven't experience that. Even so, would definitely not mind waiting for the quality of the food.
Thurnis
eat here often on my lunch break. the food is awesome! and great value for money. i avoid long wait times by calling ahead and have never had a problem.

Tried this place more than five times. Highly recommend. Great food at an excellent price. Drinks and food were both good. Highly recommend the larb mince and crispy pork.

Nara Thai is local to my workplace and offer very tasty and reasonable priced lunch options. Staff are friendly and attentive. Wait times can be lengthy if you arrive after 12:30pm and/or don't pre-order.

With a menu that boasts common favourites and exotic dishes, Nara Thai is an exciting new addition to South Melbourne's dining scene. This humble eatery is not for the faint-hearted. Most dishes are smacked filled with spice and flavour. . One of our favourite items from the menu is the Chicken Green curry. The dish consisted of tender, flavour-infused chicken morsels thoroughly coated in mouth-watering curry of various spices.

It takes so Long to get our order. We ordered on the phone 25mins before arrival, but still need to wait an other 25 mins to get our food. Won't come back again. poor Serive !

I've eaten here a few times now and each time has been great! The portions are decent and the food is authentic, Food was always delivered in under 15 mins each time (It was generally quite quiet when I went) and the staff are all lovely!
I can highly recommend the Glass noodle salad and Larb Gai!

This is a welcome addition to our little food bubble we have around this area - hope it sticks around :)
I've dropped my review to 3* as the last 3 times I have been there to pick up take away something had gone wrong, today was no different, called the order and walked down to collect it - phone order was misunderstood, no order confirmation on pick up so it wasnt noticed until the food was ready, by the time I got my full order it was 40 minutes....

Happy to increase this as it gets better as the food here really is that good that I can forgive a few slip ups but when time is short - delays like this make me reconsider it!
Also when the alcohol licence gets granted it will be even better!

Excellent food and lovely service. As it is my local I have been heading there for dinner during the week on a few occasions. Each time trying something new. Gorgeous flavours and fantasitc fresh food. The best restaurant along the stripe. Highly recommend and it's always been fast service. In and out in under 40 min each time. Love it.

Nara Thai is located in the quiet area of South Melbourne on the corner of Park Street and Palmerston Crescent. I called up last minute (about 45 mins before we arrived) and was told that we needed to make a booking. When we arrived, the restaurant only had one table of two dining and there was only one other table that arrived before we left.

The waitress that served us appeared to be working on her own, with the chefs in the kitchen. It wasn’t too bad because it was quiet, but while she was very friendly, she seemed quite new. We asked a couple of things about the dishes, and she was unable to answer the questions. Perhaps she did not quite understand or just did not know?

Check out the review of Nara Thai Street Food in the blog post below.

Green beef curry was really tender. Love the retro serving containers used. Serving sizes where generous. Only gripe is credit card accepted only above $30

The food was Ok and fresh. But we have to wait ages! I think because its under-staff and lots of costumer. Also, the portion is small so for me it is not filling.
Kate O'Connor
Came here last week for lunch and absolutely loved it! The food is all made to order and everything is very fresh, so i'm guessing this is why it takes a little longer for it to arrive. Suggest pre-ordering if doing a lunch booking.
The food was delicious - especially loved the crispy pork and the Thai Green Curry. Loads of spice and big flavours; definitely some of the best Thai street food I have had in Melbourne.
Mrs Borg
The best traditional Thai food ever in Melbourne city, meals are cooking fresh it's worth waiting for❤️best service very friendly staffs, definitely come back for more
George Dedic
It took 50 minutes to bring out our lunch, with my meal being very ordinary and full of onion which was not displayed on the menu. Some of the people who walked in after us had got their meals well before us and there was no warning of how long it would take, nor did we get an apology whatsoever.
We appreciate that it can be busy during Friday lunchtime and that the place is still new, but as a lunch-break place, it is just not an option.
The experience definitely ruined what would have a great lunch with friends.
Andy Crone
Really yum Thai! Nice staff and good servings. Can sometimes take 25mins during busy hours but hey, good things take time. Definitely recommend!
