Hachibeh is my all time fav Jap at Melbourne. Yummy and authentic Japanese food. Went there again for Mother's Day dinner yesterday. Friendly and fast serving staff.
Food worth to order: Gyutan, Karaage, Shashimi and Nabeyaki udon. Never go wrong if you would like to get authentic Jap food in town. Recommended.
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I have been here quite a few times and the staff here are so friendly and welcoming.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: The udon is done very well as the broth is clear yet tasty and the udon is al dente. The rich dishes like katsu don and katsu curry is always done very well and is very generous for its price.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: The sashimi is good but not the freshest I’ve eaten.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: it’s a cheap eats kinda place and I would go for a quick bite!
Accidentally found this Japanese gem. Randomly selected items based on the recommendations.
Love the chicken teriyaki the most. A very common and popular dish, but not many places can deliver such a staple in an elegant way. Chicken was tender, sauce was not overwhelmingly sweet or cloying. Such a perfect and delicate balance of sweet and savory.
Pork tonkatsu was also good. Tender and crispy.
The stir fried pork - Buta Shogayaki was so flavorful. A punch of umami within such a thinly sliced pork goodness.
Ox tongue with salt was a sublime piece of dish. Cannot stop having it. It was perplexing to think how such a thinly sliced meat can pack flavors so deep and satisfying.
Price was affordable as well. Around $25 per pax on our table.
My favorite kind of Japanese places to eat right now.
Authentic Japanese izakaya. Came here for saké and snacks. Everybody working there was Japanese. The only qualm is that things came out quite slow regardless of the fact that restaurant was not full. Will be back!
It's been a while since I have been here for the lunch bento, but the quality and consistency has not changed. For $13, the bento is excellent value, including bottomless miso soup and green tea. Service is quick too, and staff extremely friendly.
My favourite Japanese restaurant for sushi in Melbourne. I always come back here or bring friends here to try the exceptionally fresh nigiri. I usually get the sake and unagi, which is good very well and I always say that if a restaurant can make unagi well then they make all their sushi well. The udon is also incredible; it tastes very authentic but the niku udon is a little bit oilier than the traditional udon, but nonetheless, great.
They also have a large selection of vegetarian options, which is great because I have a lot of vegetarian friends. Highly recommend!!
Was here for lunch a few days ago and was pleasantly surprise at how big the place was and how tasty the bento tasted! The $12 lunch bento option is great! Unlimited tea and rice with various choices of meat, salad and sides! I got the teriyaki chicken with the potatoe salad and tofu sides. Everything tasted delicious. Chicken was moist, tofu was soft and crunchy (would have liked at least 1 more though) and the potatoe salad was filling. Definately didnt need extra fluffy rice but the extra green tea was perfect!! Overally very satisfied. Must go back for dinner one day.
Came here for lunch the other day! The customer service was pretty good, the waiter was attentive and patient. I kinda loved how the restaurant has this dimmed setting, which makes it feel cozy. The food served there was decent too. Wouldn't mind revisiting to try out other dishes (I ordered a bento).
Great lunch bento box deal at $12 which comes with rice, meat and various sides. Authentic Japanese food. Efficient service, polite and attentive staff. Came here once for dinner and it was interesting to see the place transformed at night. The place was dimly lit which makes it easier to relax in. Office workers trickled in for nomikai and several cries of "kanpai" could be heard. It felt like we were in Japan. We tried most of the chef's recommendations and they were really good. I especially liked the nasu dengaku (eggplant with miso) and wafu steak although the steak was on the fatty side. I would give the okonomiyaki a miss since there were barely any other ingredients in it besides flour. Sake was good. The price is reasonable and within the typica pub food range.
Used to come here quite often, but less and less lately due to its expensive prices and poor service. I usually come here with 3-4 friends, and while the food was good, I think the prices are steep for the portions they provide, and nowadays there are better alternatives. Service is average at best, as usually we had to wait a long time before a staff come by us (especially if you sit upstairs). I think they need to get more staff and portion their food better. I would recommend the yukke, as that would be my favourite dish there.
Came here a month ago for dinner and had the Sushi & Sashami deluxe selection platter, Una don- grilled eel fillet on rice with kabayaki sauce and teriyaki chicken rice and Japanese hot green tea.
I enjoy the food that night. Everything serve that night for us is fresh, hot and tasty. I enjoy our sushi & sashami deluxe selection platter the most. The price was good and portion size was good too. Service was average. So many Japanese restaurant around. This place is good if you are in the city and don't want to over spend too much for Japanese food with tiny portion. 😀
4.9 for the gyutan!!😍 miso gyutan is a must, the best one ive ever tasted. Would give it a 5 if its just a bit cheaper 😁 but srsly tho, would definitely come back again. Soft, tender, and it melts in your mouth. I found the donburi quite bland tho.
The lunch bento is absolutely the best $12 you can spend in the CBD for lunch! I typically get the sashimi, the pork salad (sounds weird but it's great; highly recommended), and the ebi fry. Plus bottomless tea and miso soup! The fish alone would cost $12 at a sushi place.
This is a great place for lunch. You get to choose the three components that make up your bento box, so you can have many different combinations. My favourite is potato salad, sashimi and ebi fry. It feels very healthy. They also offer complimentary green tea with your meal.
I've never had a bad meal here and I've eaten here at least half a dozen times with the same group over several years. It's good solid Japanese fare at very reasonable prices. Last night we had gyoza, sushi and sashimi, okonomiyaki, some salads and likely several other dishes that I momentarily forget but not because they weren't excellent. The service is always unfailingly polite. You can't fail with that sort of formula. Recommended.
An authentic Izakaya style dining experience for Melbourne! My wife and I have been to Izakaya Hachibeh many times and never left disappointed. The food is always excellent, and this really is quality, value and comfort combined. We have a preference to sit upstairs, so if you can, do so as it's more comfortable and relaxed.
Food: ok - good, huge menu with reasonable price. Won't say the best of the best but really good for a quick, enjoyable meal
Service: friendly, prompt
Will definitely come back to try other dishes
Best place for a quick and satisfying lunch ! For less than $15 you can get a great lunch set ! My favourite is the gyudon & udon set ! Its great when you can't decide between having noodles or rice for lunch. Great value for money & Great food !
been here a few times, went to at lunch time after long time. was very packed but luckily i was able to get a seat without waiting. 12 dollars lunch set was very generous portion and regardless such a busiest time, their service was pretty fast and friendly which was impressive. can't wait for coming back again!!
One of my favourite lunch spots. They do $12 bentos with unlimited rice and miso soup, and for the ladies, you can get a chirashi don + mini udon or soba also for $12 through the 'ladies set'. I think that it's great value for money - however they only take card if you spend over $30 (or there's a small fee) which is slightly annoying.
The lunch deal is really great for $12! You get to choose 3 food items for your bento. They also offer unlimited miso soup during lunch time, so definitely go if you love miso soup!
Amazing izakaya. The two of us lived in Tokyo for a combined 18 years before moving to Australia, and we were just craved some decent izakaya food and a taste of the place that was our home for so long. We were not disappointed, and we will be coming back for more.
Izakaya is supposed to be shared with great friends and this place is definitely the best to invite all of your besties! Super rich traditional Sukiyaki and flavourful Wafu Steak are definitely my favourite dishes for which I come back regularly. Service is attentative and prices are moderate. All in all always an amazing experience! Highly recommended!
A bunch of friends (13 of us) came here on Friday night and we really enjoyed the food and atmosphere this place offered. The service was great and we all enjoyed our food immensely! Definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys good Japanese food!
My favourite izakaya in CBD.
Seafood here are fresh, beers are great and they make good nigiri. Friendly staff and chief.
Good place for have a drink after work.
Where can you get unlimited miso, green tea and rice in a bento box for $12
Its a good deal.
Delicious and happy pocket
Staffs and service 👍
Pros: Cheap, good quality Japanese food
Cons: $30 EFTPOS minimum? Annoying for those who don't carry cash.. i.e. me..
The lunch menu is really cheap, $12 for the Bento box (pictured) with unlimited rice, misu soup and hot tea, fantastic value, no wonder the place was full. The food was pretty good, tasty, good amount, overall quite pleasing. The staff are really friendly, lots of smiles it generally feels like a warm friendly place.
The restaurant is fairly large and had the typical red tones that you'd find in other Japanese restaurants, I really like Japanese decor, looks great :)
That's pretty much it, I recommend for lunch? Definitely, $12? Can't go wrong.
I checked out Izakaya Hachibeh afterwork on a Wednesday night. Staff were very attentive upon arriving carrying the tradional greetings of a Japanese restaurant. As for sharing dishes we got the takoyaki, yukke & green tea umeshu. The takoyaki was slightly different as it was served without the usual dried bonito which I'm used to but still nice. The yukke (raw beef & raw egg) was amazing! There was a nice zing to the dish with its sauce even though the ingredients were raw.
We had a bit of the mix up where the waitress thought we ordered only 1 ramen bowel instead of 2. They were apologetic once it was realized & quickly made a second bowel. The ramen was light & easy to eat compared to the thicker broths that can be served at a ramen specialised store. I did eye the table next to us & noticed thay their sushi & sashimi platters looked amazing. Leaving at the end of the night with a Japanese farewell & thankyou ftom the staff. I wouldn't mind popping in again to try the sushi & sashimi platter ;)
Very extensive menu and hard to choice from, eventually I settled with grilled eel don with a bottle of Kirin beer. It didn't disappoint. The eel was intensely flavoursome and the rice tasted great soaked in the sauce. It is a no frill cheap and cheerful stop for lunch or dinner right on Bourke Street.
The menu was huge, there was so much to choose from. I had the marinated eel with egg, onion and rice. The eel was cooked in the egg and onion like a chicken katsu don which I never had before. I really like it. The flavours were well balanced and I would definitely have it again. The serving size was also huge that I could not finish it. Would recommend this dish.
Very reasonably priced izakaya with amazing food and drinks.. The gyutan misoyaki is so tender and delicious. So does the wafu steak. They have a wide selection of sake and japanese beers. Service is a little bit slow. Otherwise it would've scored higher
Lunch menu offers excellent value and very generous portions. Service is also warm and attentive. I ordered the mini chirashi don which also comes with a small udon or soba (I had udon) and miso soup. A great feed for only $12. The sashimi might not have been screaming the word "fresh" but there were a substantial number of pieces which definitely satisfied me. When I saw "mini" I thought it would be a small bowl but actually it was a lot bigger than I thought. Would love to try their bento boxes next time (for $12 you choose what you want in your bento and can also get unlimited rice and miso soup)!
I went here with a couple of friends and I ordered the niku udon. The udon broth is amazing. Very tasty and fresh. I also tried the ox tongue skewer that came with the sashimi rice bowl. It was very tender and soft and most of my friends enjoyed it as well. For desert we ordered the taiyaki. It was a bit disappointing because I thought there would be ice cream inside but instead tasted doughy and was pretty much batter.
Fresh and really good quality sashimi.
The Sushi and Sashimi platter was great with lots of different varieties of fish/seafood in different presentations, sushi, sashimi and nigiri.
The sashimi salad was quite nice too. Generous carvings of sashimi ontop of green salad. The salad dressing was a bit strong and unfortunately they dressed it way too much.
If I was to order this again, I'd kindly ask for the dressing on the side to control the flavour myself.
My absolute favourite Izakaya Japanese in Melbourne. Eat this combo (as per my photo) for under $30 and you walk away very satisfied ninja. Oishi-ne!!!
Possibly my favourite Japanese restaurant if you want cheap quality Japanese food. Sushi may not be the best quality but it still does the job. Entres and mains are all delicious & they're very generous with their portion as well. All staff are Japanese and they're all very friendly
Popular Japanese casual dining/drinking restaurant, frequented by both Japanese and locals. A number of choices there and whatever you choose, you wouldn't fail. All good.
You can have noodles or some rice dish to finish your dinner and that's what we call "shi-me," which means closing. Whenever I dine here, I forget I'm in Melbourne. ;-)
Plenty of space to sit on a weekday night. Sashimi platter of chef's choice was good however not as memorable as their ox tongue entree - a pleasant surprise to those used to the normal texture of the meat.
Love love love this place! Such a cute place with fast service - ended up getting a bunch of food and sharing it! Dumplings, rice, all delish meals!
Staff are pleasant. Will definitely come back soon!
The eel sushi is amazing when served still warm and can taste a light grilled flavour. The octopus balls are very authentic and taste just like what you would have in Osaka. However the place is a bit noisy, orders do not have much flexibility to customers need, and the service still require some improvements
I have been going here for the past 5 years for dinner, and it always doesn't disappoint, and tonight was no exception. I have not dined here since late 2014 but the food remains awesome.
Order the gyutan misoyaki (grilled miso-marinated ox tongue) or gyutan shioyaki (grilled sliced ox tongue with salt), yukke (beef tartare with egg yolk and sesame oil), ebi mayo and whatever you like from their specials board.
One funny thing I noticed is that reviewers demand "fresh right out the ocean fish" and high-end sushi from an izakaya....it doesn't add up.
The food here can compare to a normal izakaya in Japan (not to the high-end ones though, price constraints), which is rare and very welcome in Melbourne, given the propensity of places to take short-cuts.
Don't believe their website. It is old prices and dishes. It is unfortunately more expensive than it says, and is therefore false advertising in my eyes.
The food is good, but some dishes are very ordinary - such as tempura. I won't be having that again. Karaage is great but they charge extra for mayonnaise. The sashimi is delicious and fresh, and the gyoza is also good. Yakitori is ok.
This is usually our choice when we want a Japanese izakaya style place. The menu here is huge so you might have trouble selecting but everything we've ever had here has been fresh and tasty. The sashimi is fresh and good here, as are the gigantic katsu curry dons (a favourite of ours).
where fresh sashimi, sushi and other hot dishes / tapas are served and enjoyed with a good glass of sake or beer
The ox tongue was sliced thin and simply grilled with salt and pepper for a miraculous result. Each piece was slightly chewy but still melted in the mouth with an indulgent fattiness and smoky aroma.
Good food, good price!. The environment is not that great but the food is good and also for a Japanese restaurant, price is reasonable. Definitely recommending to people who don't care about the surroundings but looking for good food and good priced place.
Great lunch set. Generous and delicious lunch sets.
Great food.. This is not the cheapest place in town but the food they serve is fantastic! Ox tongue skew is my favourite.
Good but small portion. The foods were quite nice, I like their sukiyaki and they have tasty sauces to go along with different dishes. I had yakisoba for the first time ever here, and I have to say it was good but I have had better fried noodles at other places. Overall the foods are good but the portion is small for the price.
Lovely izakaya-style Japanese restaurant. Staff are friendly and the place has great energy. They have a great food and drinks menu. The food itself is not fantastic but mostly pretty good. No realy complaints. Overall a pretty decent place to call an izakaya, and it's not pretentiously pricey, which is greatly appreciated. A great Japanese place to gather for food and drinks.
Great food. Great service. Simple. Perfect meal with a few Asahi drafts on tap.
Sh*t service. -The waitresses are not scanning the restaurant well and hard to get attentions.
- takes too long to bring out drinks.
- brings out the sushi first when I specifically said to bring later
- lacks a knowledge of service when it come to BYO wine
Izakaya fun. Very solid izakaya dining place, good service, delicious food and reasonable prices, recommend everyone to try it
Fast service, fresh tasty and delicious. Highly recommended. Will definitely come back and try other dishes!
Not bad Japanese at an affordable price. Sashimi and gyoza were excellent. The wafu beef was okay if a little tough. Rice was a little overcooked.
Adore!!. I absolutely adore this place - have been many times for lunch and never been disappointed.
Staff are incredibly friendly and actually Japanese (unlike a lot of other places) - I love that you get an almost united greeting when you walk in, even by the chefs in the kitchen!
Their choose your own bento lunch is great - a good selection, including veg options. It's simple and understated, but really hits the spot. You also get a miso soup.
This is a great place to go for a no nonsense meal, where the staff are really lovely and warm.
Went too the restaurant on a really busy night and the little waitresses were literally "running" around to serve some pretty annoying customers... However, the girls serving we're so nice and attentive... Such good commitment to service! We had a lovely meal for the third time here! Really nice authentic food! Happy ever time... See you soon :)
Delicious. The food at Izakaya Hachibeh is fantastic and well priced. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The only thing that I dislike about it is that the upstairs dining area lacks ambience but everything else more than makes up for it.
The best izakaya in the CBD. Honest, authentic, welcoming and all for a good price. Sure, there are higher-end places but for a real Japanese street-style izakaya, you can't go wrong.
I am an ox tongue convert because of this place. Now one of my favorite jap restaurants in Melbourne. Never thought I'd eat ox tongue and like it before until I got dared to eat its melt in your mouth goodness... Since then have tried ox tongue in several places but they never make it as good as Hachibeh. My 3 favorite menu items from Hachibeh are now ox tongue, their eggplant and plum wine. Best ox tongue in Melbourne!
I would probably give this restaurant 3.5 stars but the review system doesn't allow that, so I'd rather give 4 stars than 3. This isn't a fine dining restaurant. It's a casual, walk in off the street kind of restaurant with wonderful food. The curry was excellent, with flavours reminding me of curries I had in Japan. Nigiri/Sushi was good. Dumplings were excellent; as was the "German" potato (i.e. fries with amazing flavour). Good service.
One of the best authentic Sushi place in Melbourne. Good place to hang around with family and friends. Located in the center of CBD.
Fantastic service, nice atmosphere. Food is good and quality hasn't changed for the years that it has been here. Decently priced and nicely portioned. Wide variety of drinks here as well.
My friends and I had a late dinner (i.e. during non-peak time) so I'm not sure how accurate my experience is of the atmosphere but the restaurant itself is relatively spacious (given it's in the middle of the CBD) with nice decorations and friendly staff. The menu is quite extensive with a range of hot and cold foods (the katsu don and tempura udon were quite nice). Priced more on the expensive side overall but an enjoyable experience all the same - would recommend it
Love the food, the steak was slightly over done, but everything else was very tasty. Staff was pleasant as well.
Friendly service for the most part and tasty authentic Japanese food for a wonderful value! :) I'd highly recommend swinging by here when you're looking to satisfy your hunger haha
Pic is $10 lady's menu set :)
Very good place for lunch, they have a special menu for women that is super tasty and filling
Best katsu curry in Melbourne great prices, also the generous portions are amazing. Worth noting that the staff are all actually Japanese. Should book in advance though it gets busy (can do it online). Also if you are waiting a bit longer than you think you should for your food please query the staff - I've had a couple of minor delays from forgotten items or orders here.
