Points for: excellent American sandwiches
One of the best Reuben sandwiches in Melbourne.
The rye bread is buttered and grilled both sides, with loads of pastrami, pickles, and creamy coleslaw brings it all together. I love all the different textures.
Philly Cheese-steak - shaved grilled beef on a soft bun with creamy cheese sauce. Nice touch with the grilled capsicum.
Similar to the Reuben, the Rachael is made with turkey.
Served with pretzels and an extra bit of pickle, there is also a Mentos to freshen you up.
One of my favourite sandwich joints, recommended!
My rating: 4.5
Ohhh, what a nice discovery today. I meet up with a friend that works at 500 Bourke St and we walked up to nearby food court at 600 Bourke St. It's been such a long long time since I actually eaten around this area, so it was a nice change. My friend recommended me to try this American sandwhich place, which I thought was a brilliant idea.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Mason Dixon is located in Bourke Place Food Court at 600 Bourke Street near the corner of King St.
This Food Court looks soo much better than it was before, a wonderful modern upgrade (that's how long I havn't been here haha!
Mason Dixon is right at the very back end on the right hand side.
🔆SERVICE🔆
I came here with my friend after peak lunch rush hour at around 1.45pm on a Monday afternoon and was pretty quiet, well I thought so, until I realised those people sitting around ( 6 of them) were before us, Hahhaha!!
So I noticed at the register a sign to download Mealpal. For first time users, you can first order (lunch) for free and you pay $4.99 membership on 40% off meals at 500 participating restaurants, you can order your meal in advance to skip the queue. I have never seen it or used it before, but I am going to keep an eye out from now on :)
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
Wow, so much options to pick from and they now also have breakfast bagel and toastie options. So the prices has increased compared to the menu that is on zomato and Facebook, so people please keep this in mind. After looking at the menu for a short while, I decided to order the:
Cubano Miami Style, $13.50
(Ham, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, pickle, and citrus mojo on a toasted long Roll)
🔆VERDICT🔆
Absolutely delicious! Love how the long roll is toasted on those flat toastie sandwhich press which gives the sandwich a yummy crunch. The swiss cheese has melted all the way through, so when you bite into it the string of cheese just pulls out ever so lightly - yum! The pulled pork is soo tender and juicy its sooo good! Alot of times I've had pulled pork in a roll and the pork is not fresh or its very dry but this one at Dixon Mason is delicious.
A nice surprise at the bottom of the cardboard box is 2 pretzels and a mentos. A little unnecessary but a nice touch. The pretzels had already soften up by the oil and heat of the sandwich so wasn't that nice.
I will definitely be back to try more of their yummy sandwich.
If you are looking for traditional American style sandwiches, it's hard to go past Mason Dixon in the CBD. These sandwiches are seriously mouth watering and worth the wait in line!!
The Reuben has everything you need for this classic with juicy meat and saukraut... the juices were literally running down my fingers. The Cubano with jalapenos is perfectly spicy, and the pork was tender and tasty. I love that they come with a pickle to cut through the richness of the service.
With friendly staff, and efficient service; Mason Dixon is a lunch time institution in the city for good reason.
Thank you for your amazing Miami style Cubano. Had to stop myself from scarfing down the entire thing. I can't wait to order more sandwiches from here again next time!
Amazing American inspired sandwiches/subs (think bowery to williamsberg which is another fav of mine). Super filling and extra tasty. Can't go wrong with the wide selection and fair pricing.
This would have to be the best sandwich bar in the CBD. The sandwiches are massive here! Designed to fill you up and to do so with an abundance of flavour and quality. Everything was freshly made and the service prompt. Worth $15 each.
Amazing American style sandwiches! Being from the U.S., it’s so nice to have a taste of home here in Melbourne. The Che Guevara and the Reuben are a must. Love, love, love this place!
I have been trying to find a place in Melbourne that does a good hoagie roll and I have defiantly found that place!
I had a italian cold cuts hoagie. That had ham, salami, sopressa and cheese that was melted on the hoagie. Then it had capsicum, lettuce, tomato and vinegar dressing to finish it off.
Wow, this was both filling and full of awesome flavors. I wish they were open on weekends too, that way I could bring some people into the city to enjoy this delicious food too

I definitely had the best sandwich I have ever had at Mason Dixon. I got the Calle Ocho Cubano (ham, pulled pork, turkey breast, bacon, Swiss cheese, red onion, pickles and citrus mayo on a toasted long roll). It was divine! The bread and the meats just melted in my mouth and it comes with pretzels and a mentos.

A pricey but delicious option for lunch, unless you got a Groupon deal! I ordered the rachel and it was a huge portion - delicious coleslaw and meat with pickles, pretzels and mentos on the side. Bread was also wonderfully toasted. Recently they increased prices by 50 cents which was unfortunate!
Superb toasty and tasty American sandwiches. Love the extra mini pretzels as a side.
The fillings were delicious. Packing full of flavor in each bite.
Tucked away in an otherwise nondescript food court on Collins Street, you'll find Mason Dixon serving up a great range of American deli classics and it's my pick for one of the best reubens you'll find in Melbourne!

Yeeeeew! Nobody loves a Reuben sandwich more than me! We chose Mason Dixon to deliver to us for a particularly busy Friday in the office with no chance to go out ourselves and we were all super stoked with our choices. Chose to go halfsies with a colleague in a Supreme Reuben and a Cubano - neither of which disappointed but being a massive fan of a big sandwich the Reuben edged out the Cubano for me. Amazing flavour in the Reuben and absolutely jam packed with deliciously fresh sauerkraut and meat. These sandwiches are always messy to eat, but was happy to find the bread didn’t go soggy as fast as some - win!
The only thing even remotely disappointing about this was having to listen to one of my colleagues complaining about the free pickle. COMPLAINING! FREE! PICKLE! It’s free and frankly all sandwiches should come with pickles and pretzels like these from Mason Dixon. She’s obviously crazy.
Definitely shooting to the top of my future Friday food deliveries!
The Reuben Supreme is delicious, and twice the size of a normal sandwich. Bit overwhelming and messy if you’re not inclined to food like this normally. The double cheese and all the mayo and salt was overkill for me, but still enjoyed it heaps.
A few pretzels and a pickle were at the bottom of the box, which I loved. Guy who served was so kind and warm. I can’t say I often feel like hacking at a sandwich bigger than my face, but when I do I’d be partial to head back to this hidden food court gem.
Love this American sandwich bar. So underrated. The MD Reuben remains my favourite. Ive had the philly cheese which was tasty. I have found the sandwiches to be a bit too wet from the sauerkraut. Not a dealbreaker- just something to consider. The grits were tasty. Carbs on carbs with American cheese and bacon. Very American. They have drip coffee like you're on an episode of Seinfeld. Overall, it's a great experience to eat here for lunch.
It was a bit of a commute to get from one end of the CBD to the other but it was worth it. We all got sandwiches of sorts but I couldn't pass up a cubanos, The Che Guevara I'm told is one of the most original and popular items.
While a couple of my friends were struggling with the sloppiness of their sandwiches, my cubanos was tidy. Toasty, cheesey, spicy from the jalapenos and some of the most amazingly tender pulled pork I've had. Not usually a fan of pulled pork because it tends to be dry so I was very pleased. Under the sandwich are some pretzels and a mentos.
Also got it in a combo, a drink and some chips it will set you back another $7, not necessary as the sandwich alone is sufficient. Chips weren't bad however.
Nice food court layout and you can enter/exit via Bourke or Little Bourke Street.
Classic American food is so well known, and Mason Dixon serves it up exactly as I imagined.
The biscuits and gravy were rich and intense and the portion size was generous. The 'biscuits' (aka big savoury scones) helped balance the salty rich gravy so it all just worked!
I was surprised by the small size of the small bacon & cheese grits, until I realised how filling they were! I'm not quite used to the taste and texture of the American cheese on top, but can see how it works all together!
Super delicious & super filling American style sandwiches/subs - not much more to say!
I have had the Philly Cheesesteak, Cubano and Meatball - all have been great. Love the inclusion of pretzels and a mint in the box - very thoughtful. Highly recommend and suggest taking plenty of napkins and a fork with you as the juicy delicious saucyness does make for messy eating!
Having the MD reuben~ The sandwich is really lovelyyy🙏🏻 toasted perfectly i guess. Really pleased with the taste.
Will come back to try different one :)
Had the deluxe meatball hoagie. Was happy with the meal and would definitely go back to try some of the other sandwiches. Service was also quick and friendly at this location. Give it a try for something different to your usual sandwich place.
Had the rueben supreme, chips and the gritz here. Rueben was big enough to share with the sides. You could taste the quality of the meat which was great. Wasn't a fan of the gritz but everything else was good. Pretty reasonable price too! Great for lunch
I’ve tried the MD Rueben many times and the quality of the ingredients always stand out.
Today I thought I’d try the new Philly Cheese Steak on the menu - nailed it, yum! Probably the only extra I’d (personally) add is some crunchy jalapeños even though this would be breaking from tradition!
Service is always with a smile and reasonably quick for fresh quality food.
I'm in the whole Hot sandwich faze, have been going Crazy for them as of late, had to give Mason Dixon a shot and they held up alright..... got the Calle Ocho Cubano which had Ham, pulled pork, Turkey breast, Pastrami and Bacon with Pickles and mojo sauce and Swiss cheese.
Was fairly decent feed, could have gone a 2nd, but pricey for what you get but can't argue the flavours encompassed in the Roll, will return to try a few of the others like Reuben supreme and Philly cheese steak and the tempting Doggy.
As a veteran of the Collins Street branch of Mason Dixon, luck was a fortune when The Dear Luncher found a different branch of this American sandwich place, near Bourke Street. For something a bit different from the usual orders (Reuben + Cubano) - this time around the Philly Cheese Steak was requested. A superb choice. The wait was long, but it was well and truly worth it. This bad boy was dripping with cheese and hot mustard. That sensation you get in your nostrils from some really hot mustard is The Dear Luncher's equivalent of a heroin rush. The steak within this beast was delightful - meaty and flavoursome. *The Dear Luncher has no idea what a heroin rush is actually like.

I haven’t been to New York (or America for that matter) nor have I had the pleasure of visiting the historical deli’s that are littered throughout the Big Apple. I’ve seen the videos of the famous Katz’s Deli where Harry met Sally was filmed (and everyone knows the infamous scene of a young Meg Ryan) and Adam Richman (of Man v. Food fame) downing overstuffeded sandwiches like childsplay.
I’ve had my share of corned beef sandwiches but wasn’t any sandwiches in particular that had me fiending for more or much less, crave. Mason Dixon’s specialises in American sandwiches offering hoagies, bagels, breakfast menus and with your choice of meat. So much choices, so little time and tummy real estate.
Mason Dixon’s located inside the Bourke street food court located at the 600 Bourke. You’ll need to descend the stairs past the Woolies and make your way to the back on the right side.
The awesome:
- Mr. Brunswick ordered the Philly Cheese-steak and loved it! I had a taste and would agree Mason’s cheese-steak is a balanced mouthful. Coupled with a serve of fries and you’re golden. I would’ve liked the steak to be less well-done but I’m sure the yanks would disagree.
- I ordered for the MD Reuben and this was a great sandwich. Granted I’ve been here before and tried the Pastrami – this was equally great because of how the corned beef is not overpowered by anything. The Russian dressing is not too strong but cuts through the beef and sauerkraut brings some freshness and crunch. If you come during the quieter times, the bread is toasted perfectly. Recommended.
- Every sandwich comes with complimentary pretzels, pickles and mint. Cause you gotta be ready for the ladies after a lunch session with some sauerkraut and pickles.
Definitely recommend Mason’s to anyone working in the CBD. Even without fries/sides the sandwich is substantial and will satisfy big eaters. The wait is not too long (10 minutes turnaround) and there is always a seat at the food court. Or you can head back to the office and eat in isolation.
So many options on the menu to choose from! We got the philly cheesesteak and cubano. Keen to come back to try other options. Definitely worth a visit!
I had read so much about this place and couldn't wait to try it. What I didn't realise was that it was in a food court, but it didn't really matter too much. For a quick lunch in the cbd it was fine. And you soon forget your surroundings when you dig into one of the delicious Rueben sandwiches. These things are SERIOUSLY good!! There are different combinations so you can choose what meat/s you want. Delicious! The cubanos weren't the traditional ones I ate when I was overseas and were a bit disappointing. But the Reuben's are definitely worth trying!!
Everyone say hello to my favorite sandwich bar, Mason Dixon.
I've been multiple times and each time i have ordered a new item off the menu... and each time they have knocked the ball out of the park (its really good is what i mean for u non-yank speaking individuals).
I highly recommend the philly-cheese-steak hoagie and the reuben supreme... i also recommend u eat this towards the end of ur day as it is a food coma sandwich.
They dont try to be anything they are not... they're mericans doin fresh, simple, merican food. Friendly service and the manager will always make an effort to get to know u if u go as often as i do (which is a lot... untill i run out of money).
Can be a bit of a wait but this is usually due to making everything fresh (hence losing only .5 marks).
Overall i rate this American sweetheart 4.5/5
Will i come back: just as soon as i gather enough money for dancing on the street with my pants down.
