This place is a favourite of mine to walk to on any day of weather. The bun bo hue is a regular order of mine but they offer so much more than broth+rice noodles.
Their snack bo la lot is tops too, imagine a fermented sausage but in lieu of a stomach casing its wrapped in betel leaf and grilled. Aromatic, kinda funky, paired with the decently balanced of the dressing this is a winning entre.
They also have a variety of vegetarian dishes that aren't necessarily the slouches of the menu.
This is my local Vietnamese fix when I don't want to go to Footscray.
The place really blows my mind on different level, the biggest score would be that fact that they offer wide range of food from Vietnam that you might not get a chance to try before.
I love the Vietnamese noodle, the rare beef salad, Paper rolls, and their speciality soft shell crab noodle (like I said, you can't really find this anywhere else!)
And they also offer amazing selections of drinks and desserts ❤❤
A small restaurant that serves up a nice spread. We shared the mince meat vine leaves and the shrimp and crab net spring rolls. I preferred the spring rolls out of the 2 entrees, they were nice and crispy with a lot of flavour packed inside.
I had the beef pho soup, the beef was nice and tender and cut thinly as I like. The broth also very nice and there was a generous amount of the usual ingredients that are added to pho.
Service was ok, we weren't given any side plates and had to ask for water a couple times.
A good local and I will be returning soon.
Loved this little gem tucked away in the little corner of the Flemington showground village. This place has also been rated as one of the cheapeats option by Good Food. Love how they have a decent variety on the menu and the soft shell crab tapioca noodle soup is a must try if you are visiting for the first time.
They do have a good variety on the menu with specials on the board as well
Love love love their crab net spring rolls and chefs special cold coconut udon noodle dish! Nice little place, nothing to fancy, but clean and inviting.
Probably the best pho I've tasted in Melbourne. Broth had heaps of flavour and was very well balanced. Beef was also nice and rare when served and serving size was very generous
Wonderful little find! The noodles here were all quite good - be it the satay noodles, curry noodles, pho, or non-soup based vermicelli rice noodles. The salads were average and needed a bit more refinement. Otherwise, a descent cheap eat in Ascot Vale to try out.
Love this place with its very clean, modern Vietnamese dishes. Always fresh and tasty. Very moderately priced and polite service. Today we had the quail which was delicious, not too salty and very meaty for a small bird, use your fingers with this one! The crab net spring rolls are a mist wrapped in fresh lettuce and herbs.
What an absolute gem. Awesome food in a small and warm venue. The food is delicious and is the best vietnamese in the area. Highly recomended
My score 3.75 stars. J & I had lunch here on Tue 26th Feb. Slightly hard to spot – H27 is nestled b/w Bamboo garden & Epsom Rd. A nice set up, low stools but comfortable – bag baskets underneath (which is a nice touch). Cutlery, etc was nice.
J had Vego pho > Huge (nicely shaped) bowl, a bargain at $11.80 👍! It contained nice interesting mushrooms (poss King oyster?), largish carrot - but properly cooked (so ok), snow peas, broccoli & wombok (nice). The fried tofu slices were a bit bland & there weren’t heaps of them. There were PLENTY of flat rice noodles, which were very silky (yum), but pretty soft (anymore & they would be too soft – it was borderline). It also had 5 spice flavouring (which I thought unusual?) - although not my fav spice, it was perfectly in balance so was ok! Accompanying sides were: bean sprouts, Thai basil, lemon (not enough) & chopped red chilli. Although written on the menu, the waiter was nice & asked if butter was ok in the dish (re: being a vego dish). 👍👍 Overall J enjoyed it!
I had Vermicelli salad w Shrimp Surimi (prawn mince wrapped in bean curd sheet & deep fried - YUM 😋)! > It also contained julienned carrot & cucumber (prefer bigger – didn’t have a lot of impact), peanuts, fried shallots, a few bean shoots, HEAPS of shredded Iceberg lettuce (didn’t like really – too much). Dressing was good & VERY spicy!!! NO HERBS so pinched a few from J’s pho. Despite this, overall it was still good due to the dressing & surimi! 👍
Quarter of a star taken off for cleaning a table nearby with strong smelly chemicals 👎!
Quarter of a star added back for the fab instrumental piano background music - “We are the champions” being the highlight 👍.
We’ll be back…
A hidden gem close to home. Love the soft shell crab noodles here.
A few of my friends dine here regularly.
Some of my Vietnamese friends will travel to come here for certain dishes that are only served at this resturant.
Will come back to try the other dishes on the menu.
Great fresh food & great friendly service. Makes lazily ordering in weekly easy and affordable. The quality of our deliveries (which can be hard due to the time delay) has always been consistently delicious.
Hard to find regional specialties. They don't increase their prices for Deliveroo which I really appreciate. Really enjoyed the 2 dishes I have tried so far, Bun Rieu and Banh Hoi with chicken. I do wish that Vietnamese restaurants would add to their bun dishes the red leaf herb. You can get this vegetables in Richmond. That would be the ultimate touch of authenticity. This restaurant doesn't use much MSG. You can taste MSG, so bonus points from me. Content to order from this restaurant on a weekly basis. I loved it.
Got a vegetarian spread for work via Uber Eats. Had the rice paper rolls in fake BBQ pork, tofu, and veggie), with special fried rice, a Viet salad, and egg noodles. It was a delicious vegetarian catering option, enough for about 6-7 people. My one critique is that despite us choosing vegetarian rice paper rolls, only one of the dips was vegetarian...

Surprisingly good! I’d had my eye on this place for a while but never got around to trying it as I always end up in Footscray for my Vietnamese food fix instead. Ordered the Canh Bun/Shrimp & Crab with water spinach noodle soup and it was fantastic. It looks quite simple but the flavours are amazing. I added some fish sauce to it which just made it taste even better. Located within Showgrounds Village, the restaurant is in a quiet spot but I’m glad I tried this hidden gem. Definitely recommend it and will go back to try other items on the menu!
Ordered through Menulog, had the vegan pork salad. Delicious! Loved the sauce. Fresh and tasty. Others I ate with said their dishes were also very impressive.
Been here countless times & my go to Ubereats choice for Pho/ Noodle Soup. Love their Spicy Beef & Hanoi Trio Combo Soup, but always paired with egg noodles for that chewy texture. Give their smoothies a try too, especially the Jackfruit...yumm.
Came here many times! The service and food are both great. I recommend everything on the menu, because to be honest they are all so delicious. Try out the smoothies too! Since they are also on Deliveroo which is a bonus for me.
We have been meaning to try this restaurant right at the start of our "Whenfoodiesmeet" adventures and we have finally tried this authentic yet modernized Vietnamese eatery. We came here for lunch and a must try is the Banh Hoi with pork chop - we loved how wrapping the noodles, meat, and herbs in a lettuce cup and then dipped in fish sauce could be so yummy! We also tried the soft shell crab noodle soup - which was definitely full of crabby flavor - we wished there were some fresh vegetables to accompany this, otherwise, it had plenty of flavor! To go with our meal we decided to try the avocado smoothie - although this was decently priced ($4.8), we found that the avocado flavor was lacking and wished there was more! The atmosphere and decor were nice and has been modernized with traditional elements of Vietnamese culture!
What a nice surprise in Ascot Vale in front of a large coles in suburbia!
Massive choice of outstanding Vietnamese fare. Was so hungry I forgot to take photos, again. Vege pho scrumptious.
Friendly and attentive service with a smile.
Only downside was the rock hard wooden seats!
Love my local lunch spot Hem 27. Positioned in an unlikely position at the Showgrounds shopping centre, this establishment stands out for its great tasting food, quality menu and excellent value for money. Dropped in on Saturday for a quick lunch meal on a tight time frame and budget. There is so much to choose from! A hot bowl of noodle soup for Mr B & I did the trick, with a clean Hanoi Trio Combo for me, and a deep Coconut Chicken Curry soup for him. We were left feeling full and content. Service is quick, simple and easy. The decor lends it's inspiration from Vietnamese street food style, with baskets under the chairs for your bags. They do take away and local delivery if you can't stick around, which I often take advantage of. Highly recommended when you have a hankering for fast, fresh and flavourful Vietnamese street food in Flemington.

Pho and bun bo hue were fantastic; full of flavour, broth on point. The spring rolls were a bit too oily. Service was friendly. Well priced. We will be back.
I really like the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's warm and was decorated as a tradiitional vietnamese house. I really enjoy working here, staffs are understandable and kind, the only thing had left me empty here is, manager is tough, if s.o left a negative feedback, I fell like there are always some anonymous accounts will attack your feedback with very "dramatic" words. unacceptable!
if the food and the staffs know how to listen to other's voices that would be a perfect place to enjoy dinner with your family
Little gem hidden in a shopping area, the decor is cool and ambience is very nice. Tried a variety of noodle soups and they were all tasty, will definitely come back to try more. One of the waitress was extremely friendly, polite and attentive, the other girl however speaks abruptly and seems like she didn’t enjoy being there.
Been meaning to try this local place and it's pretty nice. Small tables especially for bigger people but the staff are really nice and the food is tasty.
Not my personal favourite pho, but would eat here again if we were near by and wanted some Viet food.
Had the lunch special , prawn and pork rice paper rolls with beef pho and dry no for about 15-16 dollars. The place is clean, very well air conditioned and ventilated and modern, the service was quick and very good .
The rolls very great value, fresh and tasty, no chewy or stretchy wrapping and the prawn and pork meat clean and the dipping sauce balanced. The substantial serving of beef pho was a surprise. The noodles well cooked and the soup itself started off slightly oily but once you cut through it was a good flavour. I fin shed the whole bowl so it was pretty good, maybe not as complex as the ones in Footscray or Sunshiny but a very good value dish for the high quality and freshness.
Great location for those who crave for Vietnamese cuisines.
Great value for money, clean restaurant and attentive staff.
Vietnamese style beef stew wasn’t disappointing but could use more flavour as it tasted quite bland along with the rice noodles as they tasted over cooked.
Tried the chicken and beef pho. Can’t go wrong with pho. The beef slices were cut nicely and no leftover parts were added from the chicken which was great.
Would return to try other dishes on the menu.
Take your lover, friends and family here to have a Vietnamese night out.

Cool decor with a relaxed vibe and high quality food for takeaway. My only criticism would be that the iceberg lettuce was littered with brown bits. It's a little bit dodgy when Coles is right across the road. They were also pretty stingey on the lettuce- there wasn't enough for the spring rolls. Come on guys! Just buy half a dozen lettuce each night. The customer service wasn't great but hey; we all have our off days!
I'd return if I were in the area again!

When traveling for work we like to make the most of the trip and dine locally and so this week's journey was to the race course up north. The most popular choice for dinner was laksa but we've been there so instead went for another top 5? . Hem27 Vietnamese. Located on the block in front of coles it's a deceptively small front with plenty of seats that extend towards the back. This is the area of shops right before Showground on the same side.
We come here all the time and we love it! Long menu with heaps of options, very reasonable prices, ample parking. The restaurant itself is new and clean. Can't imagine how people could have a bad experience here with the staff, in our experience they are lovely. Some of our favourite items are the shrimp and crab net spring rolls, the chicken spare ribs, the shredded chicken soup (simple and great if sick), the grilled fish fillet marinated in coriander, the phos. My fave is the 'rice egg noodle soup' section of the menu. I get dry rice noodles with chicken. It comes with a chicken broth on the side. Delish and unfussy. And it's BYO with a bottle shop about 50 metres away :)
Great local find. Fresh ingredients and robust flavours. The sort of noodle soups that feel like a transfusion for the body and soul! And they do home delivery through Deliveroo.
We had previously been unimpressed and then pleasantly surprised on our prior two visits.
Fortunately we can now say after our third visit that the food here is actually pretty good.
Not quite authentic for all dishes but overall the meals are carefully created and pack a lot of flavour.
Value for money. Most patrons should be happy with the fast and efficient service.
Nothing beats a big bowl of noodle soup on a cold windy morning after a race. Each of us ordered a different type of noodles soup and they are yummy. Service is prompt and the staff are really friendly
Great little place! Authentic food, awesome drinks menu! The fried chicken ribs are so crispy and delicious, the chicken salad is beautiful. We had the prawn spring rolls which were quite good also. Will definitely be back.
Finally a decent Vietnamese food outlet in the area! Hem27 is the small corner shop with so much to offer. Serving all the essential dishes (Pho, BBH, broken rice, rice paper rolls) to a variety of special dishes.
Portion sizes and pricing are very reasonable.
Small baskets are provided under each individual chair to store belongings. Tried the beef combination Pho and rice vermicelli with prawn spring rolls. Will return to try more of the menu.
Such a little gem just minutes from me! Delicious selection of all my childhood favourites and enjoyed both the canh bun and also the banh canh cua! Delicious!!!!
Definitely my go to Vietnamese restaurant. In my opinion, it beats even the ones in Footscray. Am not sure if the dishes here are "authentic" Vietnamese as I haven't been to Vietnam before. But what I know is, the food tastes great.
The broth for the noodles is so flavorful, soothing and not laden with MSG. All time fav here is the shrimp and crab net spring rolls. When wrapped with a lettuce leaf with some Vietnamese mint leaves and then dipped into the sauce, every bite and crunch that echoes... sends a little shiver down the spine.
Service here is friendly and welcoming. Staff here really takes the effort to ensure that your dining experience is comfortable and that the food ordered is correct and what you're after. Parking is ample as it is just outside Coles in Flemington. Would come back here in a heartbeat! :)
Friendly staff
Good portions
Clean
Adequate pricing
Tasty food
Menu is really long and comprehensive
Will return!!!!! But wish the soft shell crab came with two crabs or more crab meat
I ate here when craving some pho following a supermarket run. Conveniently located, lots of parking, clean restaurant interior with a basket to put your belongings in. My veggie pho was delicious, a huge serving size for about $11, and I also got a cacao sua (hot chocolate with condensed milk). The drink was soooo sugary which was what I needed at the time, but won't be to everyone's tastes. The veggie pho also had a lot of vegetables in it and was warm and comforting. The menu is in both Vietnamese and English, and has cute illustrations. They have an eftpos minimum of $15. Also they may be playing Christmas carols if you visit between now and Christmas (so avoid if carols ain't your thang)
The Soft Shell Crab noodle soup with tapioca noodles is pretty good. It's a generous size being a meal in itself.
On a separate occasion tried the chicken salad and beef salad - both not spicy enough for my liking.
The fit out is fairly standard with hard stools that don't encourage you to stay a while.
Good food guide's (2017) best cheap-eats of the year. Definitely worthy of the title. It's one of the better cheap eats I've had, doesn't beat my favorite place tho, so I can't give a rating any higher. Not the best Viet place I would say, but the dining experience was definitely better, very clean, well lit, customer service on point, even had baskets on the floor for your belongings cause they know floors are inherently dirty, I reckon all cheap-eat restaurants should do this. Had the crab and tomato soup, as that's the one featured in the magazine. Flavour was surprisingly balanced, especially because of how oily it looked at first. Definitely try it, but I'd caution to manage expectations because the dish isn't mind-blowing.
Great Viet food, however a bit westernised and lost authenticity. Knowing this place just recently won The Age's best cheap eat, we decided to give it a try. Came here starving, we started with the Summer rolls, which were really fresh but a bit cold (fridged), the taste was good but the dipping fish sauce was a bit bland (catered to Westerners' taste).
We also tried the "Canh Bun" (Shrimp and Crab with water spinach and rice noodles) - the broth was light and yum but the flavour needed a bit more strength. Next came the Com Ga Tam Ki (Tam Ki chicken rice) which was overall delicious, the rice grain was moist and separating and the accompanying ginger fish sauce was greatly made.
We also ordered the Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork Chops which was okay - the grilled pork chops was slightly thin and not marinated enough while the fish sauce was underwhelming. The least impressive dish was the Shredded Pork Skin with Udon Noodle - the accompanying coconut cream was cold and not enough (quantity wise) to go with the rest of the dish.
The most impressive dish was the Nui Xao Bo (Fried macaroni with beef). The beef was tender and the sauce was delicious - yummm! Though the macaroni could be a bit more charred to enhance their smokiness, overall the fish was delicious.
We also got the "Banh Lot" and Coconut Ice cream for desserts which were both average. The "Banh Bo" which came with coconut milk was however very tasty.
The space was clean and bright. The staff was friendly but could be more attentive. The speed of service could be improved as well but overall it's a great place for cheap, fresh, and tasty Viet food.

A good selection of noodle, rice and snack dishes. Well executed and taste delicious. Waitering staff attempted to memorise our order without taking notes but forgot one dish (so why not write the order down in the first instance?). BYO only.
Ventured here for a hearty lunch after seeing their best cheap eats win. The shrimp and crab net spring rolls were delicious, so perfectly crispy with juicy filling. I was hoping to try the Vietnamese style beef stew but they had run out before 1pm, instead I had the Vietnamese crab and tomato noodle soup which was good and enormous. The must try soft shell crab noodle soup is really something special, thick flavoursome broth with chewy tapioca noodles. A huge menu with plenty of options beyond the classic pho. Service was good too. I shall return.
have been dining in and ordering takeaway from Hem 27 for about a month now. While i love Footscray and its already established and wonderful Vietnamese food, this place absolutely holds its own compared to them. Customer service is great, all staff are friendly, welcoming and competent in english.
Being a resident of Maribyrnong, i also love the location (Melbourne showgrounds). Generally easy traffic and parking right outside the restaurant. Would definitely recommend this gem !
Having lived in Abbotsford and now in Footscray, it is pretty rare I'll eat Vietnamese food when I'm away from my local. There generally is no point, as I won't find anything as good for the price elsewhere. I suppose occasionally there is a desire to try some more "modern" or slightly more upscale places just to see if the extra money buys some extra quality of ingredients.
The best Vietnamese Restaurant in Melbourne. Highly recommend Banh Canh Cua and Com Ga Tam Ky. 10/10
Friendly staffs, tasty food, valuable meal and affordable price.
Have tried this restaurant 3 times now. First two times I had a beef pho and chicken with glass noodles and was totally underwhelmed - in both instances the broth lacked a bit of oomph although the ingredients were fresh and tasty. After hearing more about how good this restaurant is I finally went a third time and ordered the crab soup with tapioca noodles, which I'd also read about in a newspaper review. My expectations were low but this turned out to be a spectacular dish with amazingly chewy noodles, a soft shell crab with an assortment of sliced meat and fish cake in a deliciously tangy broth, and I ate every last bit of it. My suggestion is to skip the basic pho and other similar soups (you can get much better in nearby Footscray) and explore their more exotic soup offerings.
If i lived in the area I would definitely eat here more often. Unlike some Asian restaurants I didn't go home feeling thirtsy like a ate a table spoon of msg. I had the chicken ribs and it was crispy without be greasy. Not to garlicky...so i wasn't burping garlic for the rest of the night. The blended ice dessert was very refreshing!
Some of the best Vietnamese I've had. The staff were super friendly and the meals are way underpriced for how much you get. I was only in Flemington for a business trip, but I'd go out of my way to eat here again.
Very tasty food. Big range of PHO and other dishes served with fresh sides. They serve jasmine teapot instead of a tap water which is great idea especially for colder days. Great place for a lunch.
I came here with my cousins for a quick lunch.
The waitress was really friendly when she explained every dishes served on our table. I ordered a chicken ribs, fried chicken wings as entrees, a special pho, spicy beef noodle and seared cube beef w tomato rice for main dish. That was really yum except the chicken wings was a bit salty for kids. Really happy and will come back.
my friend and i went to hem 27 for lunch today it was delicious we had crab an prawn fried rice we were going to order one each but the dude who served us said they were a pretty big dish and we would be better off sharing a plate he was not wrong i have eaten there before we had a prawn noodle soup that was delicious to and we also had the prawn an crab spring rolls with there homemade chilli sauce very yummy i would recommend this vietnamese restaurant to any one who likes vietnamese cusine will be definiantly be going back there again it only cost us $23.60 for the both of us to have a very worth while and a filling meal plus i loved the complamentary pot of green tea it was very refreshing thankyou hem27 will will be back
The beef pho was good but the chicken in our other pho was a bit tough. Spring rolls good and wonton soup was fresh. Great atmosphere and byo. I marked this down due to the slow service , 25 min for pho? Everyone was getting food at different times making hard to eat, then food was cold please sort out your wait staff it can ruin the whole experience
Great Viet place locally. Definitely a step up for this shopping centre. Some really interesting takes on the soups. Goes beyond the average Pho. Classic friendly Vietnamese service, great with kids and mess.
A welcome addition to Flemington, had the beef stewed noodle soup and the flavours are amazing, never had a soup like it and on a cold winter's night it fills the spot. It's hearty and can really taste the ginger, lemongrass and coriander & beef was tender and well spiced. Experienced good service unlike previous posts so maybe improving on that front.
Great professional Vietnamese restaurant with atmosphere. Good service. Really like the entrees generally. Hot and sour soup as main is good. Wasn't so enamoured by the broken rice. Been back multiple times. An excellent local option for Showgrounds Village.
UPDATE: also tried the soft shell crab noodle soup. Broth is full of flavour. Tapioca noodles okay but slippery. Different mixture of meats and bits in the soup was a good mix.
Great first impression! The shop fit out is lovely and even their crockery blew me away for a Vietnamese soup noodle shop. A larger menu then anticipated which I am exciting to come back and try, as I only tried the beef pho. Massive serve, very tasty! Would recommend checking out this place if your in the neighbourhood.
a beautiful and wonderful place. scene reminds me of Vietnam trip last month. My friend and me ordered Chicken Pho and curry chicken. How happy is!
There was much dissatisfaction with me before, because I was allergic to MSG. I'm not happy when I enjoyed dinner with friends at the some restaurants around Footscray, Sunshine and St Albans. I always felt breathless and thirsty when I get home. but at a new restaurant called Hem 27, we completely satisfied, no breathless and thirsty after eating soup, friendly waiters, French music, beautiful scenery.
We are happy. Absolutely, we will be back. I love eating food without MSG. Thanks Hem 27.
Great new place! Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was very quick (though it wasn't busy). Delicious dishes and a great price. Modern but cosy fit out. Well labelled with gluten free/veggie/nut free options. Recommended :-D
My babes and I were driving towards East Keilor from the city when the hunger pangs started to hit me. I hadn't had breakfast yet, as I had a dental appointment in the morning, so I was definitely ready for lunch as it was around 11 AM. We were passing by Flemington racecourse when my babes reminded me of a Vietnamese restaurant she saw on Insta called Hem 27.
Although the restaurant is visible from the road, for some reason we missed it and were driving around the car park of the Showgrounds Village shopping complex looking for it around Coles. Embarrassingly enough, after 10 minutes of driving around, we found it adjacent to Epsom Road beside a Chinese restaurant.
We found it interesting that the substantial car park of the shopping complex was very full even though it was an hour before lunch on a Thursday afternoon. We were also surprised to see the staff still preparing tables when we walked in as the totally empty restaurant has been open for an hour by now. We contemplated leaving for a nearby burger shop when we were impressed by the huge menu with traditional Vietnamese dishes including spring rolls, dumplings, street food, various noodle soups, rice dishes and desserts. After reviewing the menu for nearly 5 minutes, we decided on sharing the Shrimp And Crab Meat Net Spring Rolls (Cha Gio Re) and Fried Chicken Wings (Canh Ga ChienNuoc Mam), I wanted the Vietnamese Styled Beef Stewed Soup (Hu Tieu Mi Bo Kho) with a Vietnamese Coffee (Ca Phe Sua Da) as my drink and my babes ordered a Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue). We only had to wait 10 minutes for our starters and my coffee to be served.
The Vietnamese Coffee was served dripping from a traditional filter, or 'phin' in Viet, into a tall glass with condensed milk on the bottom. Once the coffee stops dripping, remove the filter and stir until the condensed milk is dissolved. If you wanted a cold Vietnamese Coffee, which I would prefer especially on hotter days, pour your mixed coffee into another glass with ice cubes in it which is provided by the waitress. I loved the Ca Phe Sua Da as it tasted as great as any Trung Nguyen brand coffee I've had in Melbourne.
The Shrimp And Crab Meat Net Spring Rolls, which is prawn and crab meat rolled into a sheet of netted vermicelli noodles then deep fried, was tasty but I've had better at other Viet restaurants. My babes doesn't really like this type of spring roll so she only had two and I had to finish the other eight.
The stand out dish for both my babes and I today was definitely the Fried Chicken Wings. Crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside, both of the large chicken wings were cooked beautifully and the sweet fish sauce for dipping was a perfect companion.
Another five minutes after our starters, our mains were served. My babes absolutely loves Bun Bo Hue and she often buys it at most Viet restaurants we visit frequently in the west and she liked how her Spicy Beef Noodle Soup looked. The thinly sliced beef and pork, two types of meat loaf and thick rice noodles immersed in a light brown broth definitely looked great but I saw the disappointment on my babes face as soon as she took her first sip. Although we could see a spattering of chilli oil on the surface of the broth, we were very surprised that it lacked any spiciness and then we couldn't taste any salt from the shrimp paste. The meat was cooked well but it couldn't make up for the disappointing broth.
I've never had a Vietnamese Styled Beef Stewed Soup before so I didn't know what to expect but it looked similar to a few Filipino stewed dishes I've had before. The thick brown soup, which I topped with the supplied fresh bean sprouts, Vietnamese mint leaves and coriander, had heaps of very tender beef chunks and soft veges like carrot. I ordered it with both egg and rice noodles but you can order it with either noodle. After a good mixing, I had my first taste and I really liked it. Although the ginger overpowered the lemon grass and cinnamon, it seemed to work well with the star anise. A very unique flavour combination that I enjoyed, especially with the extremely tender beef portions, but my babes mentioned that traditionally the soup should be a bit thicker with a stronger flavour. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it enough to finish my bowl and I would order it again.
We were won over by a very traditional and vast menu, great service and our entrees were spot on but unfortunately our mains were a little bit of a let down, especially for my babes. If you're not used to Vietnamese cuisine, then this will be a great place to start but if you're used to having your favourite traditional Vietnamese meals from Footscray, Sunshine or St. Albans, then you may leave disappointed. Definitely worth a try though!
Great new addition to this sparsely food loved area. Outside of footscray or even flemington this kind of food is welcomed as is the attitude of the owners. Only issue id say here is the sheer size of the menu. It's massive. Have been a few times now and the Saigon street food seems to be the house specialties so ask them what they recommend. Coconut curry soup, the noodles, grilled pork and rice dishes have all been bang on so far. Will keep coming back! Great prices, service and fresh food. Winner really.
It's new and what a gem! Fantastic and very authentic Vietnamese in a convenient part of Ascot Vale/Flemington. Plenty of parking unlike Footscray, great ambience and helpful friendly staff
Amazing food, very friendly staff and beautiful ambience. Love this place, definitely a new hot spot to eat surrounded by friends and family
