Review Berto's - Melbourne

Rachelle B
Maybe new owners or chef since previous reviews but really disappointed. Very expensive for what you got, $5 for a 2 button mushrooms on the side??? And presentation was nothing like the photos in other reviews

Nice little place that's a little out of the way, and has a nice, calm ambience. The coffee is nice and smooth, and the staff are pleasant. Also tried their almond croissant - also quite nice. It's a great little place to chill during a lunch break, or catch up on a book if you're out and about when they open at 0630. Recommended :)

Friendly staff with great coffee.

Low profile cafe which serves the best coffee I've had in Melbourne CBD....Try their Flat White, its really good and consistent all the time!!!

I can’t fault this place. Small and cosy with an impressive looking menu. It’s hidden away from all the other coffee venues around here and doesn’t have the ridiculous lines. The coffee is great, smooth and rich.

Friendly attentive service. My wife been for breakfast and said was just as nice as lunch. Little over priced for what you get.

Best breakfast I had in a long time! Went there last thing before catching my flight back to Europe, definitely a wothy farewell for the continent. Had scrambled egg with salmon and feta, awesome! If I could give 6 stars I would! Do go there!

Did order a hot chocolate with almond milk, as I am lactose intolerant. After trying it I was very suspicious regarding the milk that have been served to me. I asked the waiter and confirmed to me that it was Almond milk... after a few seep of mine, I asked my partner to try mine (his was regular milk), and the taste was exactly the same... creamy (the only other milk that does this creamy texture is Cashew milk). I wasn’t wrong, a few hours later I got home with a huge pain in my stomach and I pass you the details... I will never go again to this coffee shop as they are literally lying to your face to make business!!

It was a great pasta but just so pricey for a lunch option. It was quickly made and fresh. Great flavour
The Dear Luncher
Charming little café at the base of the building on the corner of Little Bourke and William. Boisterously managed by the proprietor and staff, this seems like a happy place with dedicated regular from Melbourne’s legal community.

The Dear Luncher enjoyed his usual coffee (long macchiato) and found it to be right on the money. The coffee here is quite obviously reliable. There did not seem to be too many fast breakfast options. In the end the safe option of a ham, cheese and tomato toasted sandwich was selected. This safe option turned out to be a brilliant one, mainly because of how good the bread was. Crusty on the outside, but delicate and soft on the outside. The Dear Luncher’s co-workers looked on with jealousy as each bite produced a loud crunch. A little on the pricey side this breakfast combination ($14.20), but certainly an enjoyable one.

Good coffee but definitely on the stronger side. Slightly bitter. Came a couple of months ago and my recollection is that the blend was smoother. Good value at $4.50 for a large.

Great Italian restaurant with excellent staff and service. I've been there a few times with colleagues or clients and I've never been disappointed! Love this place.

Review of the coffee - I have not eaten there !
Coffee is always consistently great. Bold, silky and milk is always spot on. My go to morning pick me up

It’s a nice, cosy place with a friendly vibe. The waiter can be a little overbearing but only slightly. The food is always tasty and while it’s not cheap, you get what you pay for. I’ve not had a bad meal there.

This review is for coffee as I've not eaten food there: Bold. Intense. Delicious. Lasting. All the things my mouth enjoys in a coffee. Get it in ya!!

Berto's is what I love about Melbourne. An unassuming little nook with great coffee, great customer service, and an omelette that deserves its self-proclaimed title of 'world famous'

I've been working in the CBD for 5 years and have finally found the best breakfast in Melbourne ! The quaint Berto's on William street brings a home made feel with the freshest Italian ingredients. Great vibe & customer service from the owner Berto. I got the famous Berto's omelette (ham, cheese, tomato) and it was absolutely delicious. Great coffee too, highly recommend !

Leigh

I went to Berto's yesterday for lunch and I have been a very loyal customer over the past few years. I just wanted to thank you for the Seafood stew served with saffron fregola, it was absolutely delicious.

Thank you Bertos! I look forward to many more years of incredible cuisine.

Mario

What a cute little place this is. If you're in the legal district of Melbourne around William street then you need to visit this place. An Italian bistro where the waiters know their stuff. They'll explain each item of the menu (which is written on the board on the wall, no paper) and they'll choose a wine to match. And if you have to be out in an hour to get back to work? No problems. They often have a fish dish which I've had numerous times and is always delicious, the pastas and risottos are also super tasty and fresh. Simple, clean, authentic Italian flavours.

Saw this little place tucked away on the corner of William and Little Bourke and decided to give it a try. Staff were friendly and there were quite a few people sitting down to eat breakfast. I ordered a coffee and a small cookie. Not sure how much either of them cost on their own but my total was $6.70. Coffee was good and they made it nice a quickly and the biscuit was delicious. Not even really sure what it was but it looked good and tasted good- all that matters right?

Berto's gets it right. Sometimes finding a good place to have a quick pasta and glass of wine for lunch is easier said than done. Berto's does it perfectly. Great service from Berto - who knows his stuff. Great coffee, tailored to what you want. He will do well.

This place has changed hands over the years so often I can't keep up! This time around it's a cute little cafe and wine bar, it has a cost vibe and simple menu. As a self proclaimed avo smash perfectionist the one here is a bit bland, and my toast was just warm bread. Will try a few other menu items next time. Coffee good!

Solid Gold. Freshly prepared Italian. They hit the price point perfectly and have great service and wine list. If you want to take someone to lunch in the CBD and impress, with a not over the top venue, this is the place. The legal precinct has been screaming for something like this for an age.

Well that was easily one of the worst experiences I've had in the CBD. I understand that during peak hour at lunch it can be busy, but I stood waiting to be served for a solid 10 minutes today and was completely ignored. Several staff glanced at me and turned away before I could even ask for their attention. To round things off, when another customer came in much later they physically brushed past me to greet them. In a CBD full of great choices, it's the simple things that make a difference for a customer. If it's too busy, hire another staff member. I ended up going next door to Patricia's and it worked out for the best - their coffee is far superior to Berto's.

Weekday work lunch wow. The legal district has no shortage of food places but there's always room for one more when it's this good. Located on the site of the former illia cafe, Berto's had been around for almost a year (weekly changing menus and they were up to #48 when l visited).

The menu was a problem - because l wanted almost everything on it. My lunch companion generously offered to share so we could try more dishes. The Sicilian anchovy bruschetta was a great mix of freshness and saltiness, helpfully cut in half. Our soft poached eggs with asparagus and topped with truffle were sublime. My main of swordfish was awesomely good, delicately juicy cubes lightly seasoned served with potato rounds and braised lettuce. My colleague's cottoletta milanese was amazing, huge and such great value. l managed to steal a bite of the butterflied pork rib eye generously crumbed and perfectly fried, and was glad for my waistline that l hasn't ordered the dish which was irresistibly delicious. Plus l am a very big fan of good bread provided to mop up juices and sauces, which l indulged in.

With prosecco and wine, lunch was a touch over $140, which is not an everyday option but wonderful value for what we had. Service was pretty quick considering the full tables and small staff cohort. If l had to be really picky, when full the restaurant can be a bit noisy, but not devastatingly so. Berto knows his stuff and seems to love entertaining for which my tummy was very grateful.

LOVE BERTO'S. We come here every Thursday for lunch and with out dissapointment berto, jacquie, uharn and the chefs deliver on the goods. Loving the mushroom risotto and the pinot noir. Always great service and delicious food. Can't speak highly enough of this venue. Keep up the good job guys. Loving it.

Berto's is a breath of fresh air in the CBD. Excellent fresh good quality food with a different menu every week! The true Italian flare really makes you feel at home and Umberto and the crew certainly know how to make guests feel welcome. The passion they have with food and service is second to none and I'm very happy to say this is my favourite lunch spot during the week. Casual atmosphere yet up-scale.

This eatery offers traditional, hearty and most of all delicious Italian food, exceptional coffee, as well as friendly and skilful service. Berto's would have to be my favourite place to eat in the Melbourne CBD.

Best Coffee, Great Service!. Consistently great coffee, this place has an excellent vibe. From the minute you walk in you are greeted by Umberto with a happy 'buongiorno'! The menu looks great, from Italian pasta dishes, risotto's, calamari fritti to something quick like a panino. If your after a take-away coffee their service is pronto, no long waits! Definitely a place you need to try.

Lunch at Berto's!. Definitely worth your time to head down to Bertos to have the spaghetti with fresh sardines fillets and a glass of Mount Towrong Prosecco.

Easy to review - Berto's is the best. Umberto is a legend.
