📝: Got my Thai cravings satisfied. Son in Law is doing deliveries now! Be it you’re craving for fusion dishes or traditional dishes with authentic tastes, the menu’s surely got you covered.
❤️: Finally got my hands on these cute little buns! Just how cute are these little Winnie the Pooh and Hello Kitty buns filled with delicious surprises from Coconut Kaya, Banana Nutella, to Thai Tea.
An interesting modern Thai place. They are known for their cute desserts but we were here try the food. The decor makes it feel like it’s a bit of a hawkers market with a section out back that’s outside, perfect for a hot spring night.
They have a large selection of beer which should please anyone.
The papaya salad has quite a bit of kick but that was nicely flavoured. We of course had to try their name sake specialty the son in law eegs - they were very well presented and not too sweet. I liked their roti too. The pork belly was a bit of a let down as it was really quite dry.
Nonetheless I'd come back and try other dishes; the prices of the entrees and mains are very reasonable and the service was quick (if not overly friendly).
Visited Son in Law at the Queen Victoria Hawker 88 Market this past Wednesday night with my partner.
We ordered the sweet mantous, a dessert bun that comes from KL, Malaysia. It was delicious but even better when the Nutella and Thai Milk sauce was poured over the top. We also ordered the famous fairy floss which was shaped like Winnie the pooh, this was AMAZING...a real sugar rush!
Good one to visit for big and little kids!
This place had a super fun vibe! The food not only looks super cute & Insta worthy but actually taste great😊 I can't wait to go back again.
This place has such cute desserts and drinks.
Their charcoal chicken waffle burger was the best! So tasty and spicy 😋 all their dishes are very Instagram worthy! 🧡

This is probably one of the most creative restaurant in Melbourne. From their glorious fairy floss to pikachu chocolate and hello kitty baos. They have up-ed the instaworthy game.
Some our favourite dishes from the savoury menu are crispy barramundi fillet, pad thai ( can never go wrong), spicy chicken ribs. They were delicious!
Aside from that, make sure to try their pandan (or thai milke tea) crepe cake in a chocolate ball. Dont let the aesthetics of the ball take away how awesome the crepe cake is.
Cartoon baos are a must get- they are so cute how could you not!! Recommend getting them with Nutella & banana inside it was so oozey and delicious! The sizzling roti was my favourite dish I could of had an entire one to myself so so so good and not too sweet 🤤 for savoury the must order is definitely the tempura broccoli & cauliflower! The whole table was surprised by how good this tasted! Massaman curry was delicious and full of flavour. If you like novelty things order a fairy floss drink! You can choose the character and they are great for photos! The girls are so talented there and all staff were lovely! Food came out extremely quickly!!
Had a great dinner all dishes were tasty and full of flavour.
Cocktails were great and we were lucky to be there for happy hour.
Staff could have been a little bit friendlier but other than that overall was happy
Date night here was fun. Great cocktails and delicious food. The customer service was friendly. We sampled quite a few dishes which had a great punch of flavours
Son in Law offers something different to entice a younger crowd. It is so famous across all the social media for it's cute/fun dishes like cute Baos, Fairy Floss with Shake or juice or choclate cartoon sphere
I love thier desserts but they also serve traditional wholesome thai street food that bravely balance the two opposing forces of staying true to its authentic Thai roots, while at the same time modernising and pushing the boundaries of Thai food here in Melbourne.
Obviously this place is funky as... we all already know that! Situated in bustling Collingwood, the restaurant is super easy to locate! Not only are the character bao buns super cute, they're also incredible tasting! Son in Law also makes a mean Pad Thai. It's a nice, chill place to hang out. It's also relatively affordable... considering the location. Decor is pretty dated.
We went here on a Wednesday night so it was fairly quiet. The staff was nice and friendly. We ordered the son in law eggs, chicken pad Thai and the chicken ribs.
The highlight was definitely the chicken ribs. It was so tender and had a hint of chili and lime seasoning. We happily chowed down on it before our next dishes arrived. The son in law eggs was crispy and flavorsome. The chicken pad Thai was good but nothing too special.
For dessert, we had the character bao + mantou. I quite liked the Thai milk tea, it had a sweet custardy taste to it. It was almost too cute to eat! My friend really liked the Nutella and banana flavor. We made the rookie mistake of trying the mantou (the piggy bun) last, only to realize that there was no filling. So don’t be like us and try the mantou in between the other buns. It’ll help break up the sweetness. As for the drinks we went for the fairy floss drink. The staff let us choose what characters we wanted. The drink was a bit of a novelty. While it was super cute, it was also quite messy to drink.
Overall, we had a great time here. The ambiance was nice and chill, the food was really good and the staff was pleasant. We’ll definitely be back to try out the other dishes.
Still my fave Thailand restaurant but since it’s outside cbd so i rarely go there. But their food is so good and not too sweet for a Thailand dishes. Loved their cotton candy drinks.
Friendly, useful staff with knowledges of their food. The fried chicken is a highlight of my meal, zesty, very crunchy with spicy kick. All the desserts are superb!! Loved all cartoon creations which we couldn't find anywhere else cuter than their stuff in Melbourne.
This guys sure know how to make amazing thai food. We ordered the tom yum soup, double fried pork belly with rice, fried chicken ribs and ended on a sweet note of the magic ball with a pandan coconut crepe cake. Loved the tom yum soup and it keeps you going back for more and the dessert was very good.
Decent Thai food and although the buns seem gimmicky, they were actually very fluffy. My fav filling was the Thai milk tea which had an egg custard flavour. The son in law eggs were crispy on the outside and nice and gooey and delicious. The pad see ew was nice and smoky and Tom yum soup was ok but lacking in punchy chilli, lemongrass and galanghal. The lunch menu is good value but the Thai ice tea and ice coffee could be a bit less milky.
Cute AF baos 😍YES please! Months of hard work, finally Son In Law released their new character baos 🐯! Desserts here are just on a whole another level!
Super super super cute restaurant. But don't worry, the dishes aren't all just for show. I'm happy to say the flavour of the dishes are just as nice as their presentation. Started off with a bowl of soft and sweet son in law eggs, cooked perfectly - they nearly melt in your mouth. The tempura cauliflower and broccoli were also amazing. They're coated in chilli jam before being battered, giving them moisture and saving the need for sauce. For my main, I tried the delicious and warming massaman curry (tofu instead of meat). If you love the autumnal flavours of sweet potato, cinnamon and star anise, this one's for you. A bowl of coconut rice and roti perfectly accompanied the dish. Finally for desert, one of the most adorable dishes this place offers- the character bao buns. Unfortunately the restaurant was out of the corn cheese, but each of the sweet flavours were ones I'd gladly eat again and again. I thought I would like the Pandan and young coconut best, but it was actually the super custardy Thai milk tea flavour that stole my heart. The Nutella and the banana was also really nice, and was made to look like Totoro. It was the cutest bun of the bunch, imo.
While it's not located in a convenient place, it definitely is worth the trek to check out Son In Law's unique menu items.
It's fantastic that they have many novelty offerings based on cartoons. I tried the pikachu bun which looked too good to eat! It was filled with deliciously warm and sweet kaya. This went really well with the Milo dinosaur which was not overly sweet or creamy.
Kaya and Milo....they should always be served together!
Amazing food and great presentation! Had the son in law eggs and chicken ribs which were delicious but....
We came in at 1pm, and after ordering was told they had run out of all pork belly, and after ordering dessert was told they had run out of the Thai milk tea and pandan chocolate balls. A little disappointing as they had only opened at 12pm.
Will definitely have to come back to try the other dishes they had run out of!
Otherwise had a great experience and lovely service.
Waited a long time to get a table here but so worth. Didn’t think Thai food could be done so differently yet still taste the traditional flavours. Tofu was amazing
The place where to find best Thai food and dessert. Loved the set menu for two which I could pick many dishes to try with value and really full at the end. Lucky enough to try their last serve of the chocolate ball dessert on the day. Was so cute and delicious!!
Best authentic Thai flavours with a little. Been there for my birthday party and not dissappointed! The spicy chicken ribs are the bomb. Was surprising with all curries and pork belly which has really great balance on them, not too spicy, not to sweet and not too salty. And the desserts are absolutely superstar! You can’t find their unique fairy floss and the characters chocolate ball in elsewhere. So much creative and fun!
I came here with my friend and we ordered four small dishes and one large to share for ($59). It was great value for money but there was probably too much food! Everything tasted really yummy, my favorite would have to be the green curry. Really nice vibe and a good location
Fun (and delicious!) take on traditional south east Asian cuisine. I’d never tried son in law eggs before, but they were delicious. I can never go past a bao, and the duck bao at son in law was perfectly fluffy. The fried rice with prawns was delicious, with giant prawns on top (not just tiny ones which I was expecting!).
We also tried the massamun curry with slow cooked beef which packed a flavour punch.
Dessert was a little sweet for my taste, but the drama behind the melting chocolate dome made up for it! If you’re game, go for the fairy floss drink…but expect to be presented with a cloud-like animal the size of a motorbike helmet!
First off, their fried chicken is out of the world. The spiciness and crispiness just makes the prefect blend to this fried chicken. We also had the floss on the drink. The creativity is mind blowing, thats someone even came with such a different plan to make a drink look fancy. However i felt like the drink was way too little, felt like it finished too fast.
But over all this place an amazing place to hang out with your friends and just relax and have a nice time.
Ordered their chocolate balls, one pandan and one thai milk tea. The presentation was really cute, definitely instagram-worthy! When the sauce was poured, the chocolate ball melted and revealed a mille crepes. Their mille crepes were both really good, but they were a little bit too milky for my liking, wished they had a more distinct flavour of pandan & thai milk tea.
Had a nice Pad Thai here and steamed pandan puddings. The food had good flavour and I found it filling. I didn’t order the famous fairy floss drinks but watched them being made throughout the night. They are really cute!
I loved the ‘fresh’ South East Asian feel to this restaurant.
I would have given it a 5/5 but the service was on the slow side. Heaps of Uber pick ups were being made and the staff were busy the whole time I was there. I’d possibly return on an earlier mid week night.
A place that is sure to please the young and young at heart, the fairy floss rabbits are head turners that halt all conversation. These come with a drink accompanied by many phones clicking away.
They also serve typical dishes found in most Thai restaurants with bold flavours. My Massamum beef curry was beautifully presented and exploding with flavour, especially when paired with coconut rice. The Thai milk tea is refreshing on a warm spring day and a perfect way to finish the meal.
A colourfully decorated spot to enjoy a casual meal or just come for Instagrammable desserts. Either way, it's worth a visit for the novelty of seeing food/beverage made cute.
Came for the chocolate dome mille crepe and fairy floss drinks, which they didn't let us down just by the appearance! The dishes were nice too, even if it's not the most authentic Thai food taste. The green curry was yummy, especially the just prepared deep fried soft shell crab tasted crunchy on the outside with juicy texture inside. The menu items are a bit pricey for what it is, but the quantity and appearance are worth it.
Authentic with a twist. Really enjoyed with the ambience and food was very yum. The staff suggested me to try the chicken ribs and I am not disappointed. Was very crispy, tangy, spicy and flavourful. Will be back again.
Very attentive staff and delicious food. I also found that they used so many quality stuff on their food and plates. Their fried chicken ribs is the highlight and all desserts were incredible.
Have been here for quite a few casual dinners and loved all visits. Ordered Prawn spring rolls, Son in law eggs, Green curry and pad thai every time and loved the flavours. Other ppl seem to have crazy cute desserts and drinks and made me curious to want to try them.
Stumbled across this eatery by accident after catching the wrong tram into Fitzroy. Nice cosy feeling and was warmly greeted by staff. Decided to go with the lunch special green curry with soft-shell crab and prawns. All for $14 with a bowl of rice. Curry was flavoursome but not too spicy (too mild to my liking). But finished it anyway. Will be back again to try other things in the menu.
Cool little place that is always buzzing. Came here with my missus for dinner and it didn’t disappoint!
Tiger Prawns to start off we’re cooked perfectly and chill jam sauce was to die for. Perfect hit of spice. Great way to start the meal.
I had the crispy pork belly with the oyster sauce base- the pork belly was a little dry however the crackling was great and it was still very enjoyable.
Missus got the soft shell crab and prawn green curry. WOW! Will go as far as to say it’s the best green Thai curry we’ve had in Melbourne. The soft shell crab makes it stand out well above the others.
Overall, a must do if you find yourself in Collingwood
Love this place. Creative and fun dessert, food was also great especially for chicken ribs and son in law ( recommended) Staff is very helpful and friendly
My boyfriend and I came here to try the drinks after seeing them and falling in love with them on Instagram. They are 100% as aesthetic in pictures as they are in real life. The actual taste is very so-so. It's the beauty of the drink that was more appealing. I commend the owners for such a creative effort. Sadly, the lighting there was quite terrible, but it was an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, we didn't try the actual dishes there, so I can't make a judgement on those, but we will be back to try them!
Great food, great novelties!
Came here for a Sunday night dinner. The food was amazing, but make sure you have a booking; it’s a good size restaurant but it’s really busy - luckily we did. Staff were lovely, but being a busy restaurant you might have to try to catch someone’s attention, but you do they will look after you straight away.
Great array of Thai food; I’d recommend the special of 4 small and 1 large (for 2 people) it’s just the right amount of food (and you’ll just have enough room for dessert 😋).
Novelty desserts and drinks! These were the draw card for me and why I went. There’s a number of anime characters that can be made into fairy floss drinks: pikachu, totoro, hello kitty and so on. There’s also a number of chocolate dome characters that can go over your dessert; pikachu, mike wazowski, Winnie the Pooh, the list goes on! It’s the best way to end your meal
Stumbled here by mistake on a cold Tuesday night and what a delight it was!
We only had a quick dinner before going the the Melba so we’ll be back to try more of the menu soon!
Best musaman curry I’ve had and freshest spring rolls! Duck bao had too much fat for my liking and was hard to eat ( my first bao!)
Staff are attentive and helpful.
Atmosphere is fun and uplifting!
We can’t wait to return!
-1 for seating ... cold steel stools 😕
Been here twice now and loved it both times! Such a fun place to go with friends to enjoy a meal and an awesome fairy floss drink with a character of your choice! 👌🏼😊 friendly staff and really quick service!
Literally been wanting to come here for ages and finally got a chance last Friday night. We ordered the special where we got to choose 4 small dishes and one main. We ordered the fried barrumundi, son in law eggs (so good), fried prawns 😋, fried chicken. Boy I underestimated my spicy tolerance because after eating a few fried barrumandi, my lips and tongue was on fire and I could barely taste anything after that 😂😭. I think next time I should just stick to water haha. In terms of the food, I would highly recommend the eggs and prawns-I thought it was quite nice .
However the thing I was looking forward to the most was the dessert . Although it was a bit mean , melting the characters faces- I was quite fascinated when I saw a video of a characters face being made. I really like how cute the characters were. In terms of the dessert taste, I thought it was a little sweet but still nice :)
Son in Law embodies the vibrancy of Collingwood through its bright, bold and energetic food offerings and design.
Many years on, the venue continues to be one of our favourite Thai restaurants with a compelling menu of contemporary street food that pays homage to traditional flavours and ingredients.
Really enjoyed this meal. Service was attentive, fast & food arrived quickly. Beautifully presented on gorgeous crockery. Son in law eggs ok, massaman curry outstanding, chicken ribs tasty. All small plates were decent value. We went for dessert, & were not disappointed. 2 magic balls beautifully made, theatrical experiences. Sizzling roti was also enjoyable. Fairy floss drinks were amazing to see made, maybe a little pricey, but worth the experience when you see the amount of work that goes into it. Overall, the food shows a lot of attention to detail. We made a booking, but still got 5 of us squashed onto a table for 4. They got busy, so can understand why.
Food was great would recommend the fried chicken rib, batter prawn and green curry with soft shell crab service was fantastic
Definitely come back
Authentic Thai food. Small cute restaurant. Good portion sizes. Price was maybe a tad overpriced. Their dessert was very pleasant to look at but very sweet so make sure you share with a friend or eat it all if you’ve got a massive sweet tooth. Would definitely come again!
Food was nice especially the son in law Egg. The giant cute carton character fairy floss is catching everyone’s attention! They have cute dessert too!

Very nice Thai resturant with yummy food and many creative menu. Thai desserts are very nice as well especially the Roti menu with Milo and Thai milk tea sauce. Owners and staffs are very friendly. Strongly recommended! Will definitely come back!
What a surprise as their food were so amazing with cheap price. The staff are also friendly and really helpful. Tom yum is the most love!!!!
A nice place to chill and hang out with family or friends! Really love their insta worthy cotton candy drink and cute desserts! Will definitely head back
The restaurant was crowded during Saturday lunchtime but we managed to get a table without booking. Service was slow and the food came quite a while apart. The Son In Law eggs were tasty. The softshell crab and prawn green curry was very sweet but the crab was well fried and crispy. The pork belly we ordered came in a very stingy portion (best to avoid). The highlights were the fairy floss milk tea (mild tea flavour) and the pandan magic ball (tasted below average).
I came here because my friend said to me i had to go here, they have fairy floss characters over their drinks!! I finally got around to coming here and had the best time! The fairy floss characters are massive and look amazing!!! You can choose between hello kitty, doraemoj, totoro, unicorns, bears and more! It was so much fun haha! And as a huge bonus, the food was awesome too!! My friends iced coffe was yum! The son in law eggs, massaman curry and pad thai were delicious and flavoursome! The staff were super friendly and awesome! I had such a good time here :)
This Thai place is definitely a must go!! Everything is so tasty, good vibe. Just because their drinks and fairy floss drink is cute, doesn’t mean you can’t come with your family.
You have to try their mango sticky rice dessert.
After hearing about the instaworthyness of Son In Law, we dropped by for dinner on a Saturday night. My partner and I ordered the Fairy floss milk tea (of course, see pic) in the shape of an uniform (there are many choices like panda, hello kitty characters, bear etc). The Thai milk tea was quite sweet for my liking but it’s authentic in the sense that Thai citizens actually consume their Thai Milk Tea with similar sweetness.
For food, we went for the specials which is a combo of 4 small plates, 1 main dish with 2 steamed rice. I would say this is a good portion for a couple because you’ll get to sample a variety of dishes! For the small plates, we tried Crispy barramundi fillets, battered tiger prawns, green papaya salad and Tom yum soup. We really enjoyed the Tom yum soup and barramundi fillets! As for the main, we ordered the green curry with soft shell crab and prawns. Tip: Do order coconut rice instead of steamed rice because it complements very well with Thai curry dishes! We absolutely loved the coconut rice and the green curry, our taste buds were singing.
With a laidback back courtyard dining area, I definitely would wish to drop by again for a breezy lunch here. Looking forward to my next foodie trip here 😌
Fo0die dined as a guest of Son In Law and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.
A favourite of ours in Melbourne, Son In Law did not fail to deliver with their new additions. Similar to their fairy floss drinks, there’s no doubt that their adorable chocolate magic ball will be bringing in visitors from all around Melbourne.
I’ve been wanting to come here ever since seeing the cute fairy floss character Thai milk teas and today was my lucky day. We arrived at about 4pm and the lady said if we wanted to order food we would have to be quick but I just ordered a character milk tea and my friend ordered a duck bao.
When ordering the milk tea the lady asked which character I wanted and she showed me Instagram pics on her phone. I thought the panda 🐼 was the cutest so I picked that. When it came out I was very impressed by the way it looked and we took heaps of pics with it however the taste wasn’t as exciting. The eyes tasted like sugar mixed with rubber and the fairy floss didn’t have any flavouring, it just tasted like sugar. I enjoyed the Thai milk tea, it wasn’t too strong which I liked. I haven’t had Thai milk tea before so I can’t compare it. My friend said she liked her bao but she likes Wonderbao better.
The people working here were very friendly and helpful. I definitely want to come back here for dinner and to try a character dessert, they look so cute!!! I also want to come here with a particular friend and her four year old daughter, she’d love it here. I don’t think I’ll let her eat all the fairy floss though because she’ll be running off the walls hahaha.
Called to book and got the table for dinner easily. Food was ok. The cartoon buns are the main reason we came! Love it! It was a good experience overall but I feel the Thai food taste altered more to cater the local probably. Well.. it says Modern Thai Kitchen at the front window 😅 Can't complain.
Have always been a fan of cute anime themed food and taste good at the same time.
The good thing about this place is whenever I do visit, they surprise me with a new character creation each time. The fish dish was our favourite. Loved the theme.
This Thai eatery excels at instagram-friendly, cute food. We were enamoured with our adorable bao buns and enjoyed gawking at the fairy floss drinks coming out of the bar. However, mainstays such as the pad Thai and spring rolls were disappointing. The Pad Thai noodles tasted fine, but were a small-ish serve and were puzzlingly lacking in the visual aesthetic department (all brown and no green). Not a big deal, but given the attention given to aesthetics in the “cute” menu items, seemed a weird oversight. The prawn spring rolls were very overpriced for what they were - shockingly so. The roti and barramundi were tasty, but once again small serves and pricey. Overall, the food was pricey, tasty enough without being special, and the service pragmatic and unfussy. Worth coming once for the cute food, but not intriguing enough for a repeat visit.
Fantastic Thai restaurant with really cute and quirky deserts. Also has interesting cocktails, friendly staff and some of the best creamy Thai curry I've had in Melbourne. Highly recommended!
A fun experience, very unique. Comfortable setting and atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food. My friends and I had a really good time there, the only negative is food took a little longer than expected to be served. It is a restaurant I would go for desserts but less so for food as even though food there is yummy, it's not cheap. Nevertheless we had a good time. Would recommend it for the experience, especially those with children.
A menu with many classic dishes and handmade bao that Son in Law is famous for. Cosy space with friendly staff. Food was well executed and favours we're balanced. Pad Thai was fragrant and noodles had some bite but I would have preferred more tartness and a touch more sauce. Chicken ribs had a thick coat of batter and had a nicely balanced spice mix. The curry puffs were nice but I would have been happy not ordering them, they didn't seem to have much flavour on their own and the sweet chili sauce just takes over. Overall it was a good experience and would go back to try the curries.
Super fun and delicious dishes, Great price as well, we enjoyed our night very much and had food coma.
Baos are very cute and creative.
Dishes are very well presented very good size as well.
massaman curry is delicious well balanced and the son in law eggs are to die for.
The crispy pork was a bit too dry for our liking. overall we had great time and I will definitely coming back again.
Thank you team.
