One of the best dessert places in Melbourne! I always order their Mango Sago. Milk ice is thinly crushed, mango is sweet, pearl is popping!
Located in chinatown is this dessert spot that serves up an amazing variety.
Love their shave ice and mango sago, its perfect for a warm summer day or even when youre just wanting a light dessert
We came here after dinner for a sweet fix. It was packed on a Saturday but we still managed to get a table straight away. We ordered the mango sago with pomelo and green tea ice cream as well as the glutinous rice balls (sesame and peanut) in ginger soup. I was told the rice balls would take 10 minutes which I said was fine. The sago came out almost immediately. It was refreshing and not overly sweet and when the ice cream melts it adds a creaminess to the dessert. I love the rice balls! The ginger soup was well balanced and just sweet enough for my liking and not overly strong in ginger. The rice balls were chewy and had a good ratio of filling to skin. Both the sesame and peanut were delicious.
The mango snow ice and drinks are perfect for mango lovers! So delicious and you definitely get what you pay for. A little more on the pricy side but worth it
BEST desserts!! affordable too
Favorite: Peanut Snowice with black sesame and crushed peanut (no.63)
Staff were really nice and the place opens till late so it's perfect for midnight cravings
Cheap and cheerful. Very quick service. Grass jelly with coconut milk was delicious. Heaps of grass jelly. Also loved the mango sago pudding in coconut milk. It is real sweet with heaps of mango flavour.
So good for bing su! My favourite is the mango one , the shaved ice is so thin it almost taste creamy? I also love the herbal jelly here , I prefer it cold but recently had it warm and it changed my life
Their shaved snows are great, I can have it in summer and winter. The place looks abit run down and staffs did not too energetic. If they can work on their service, would def give them a 5 star. Prices are affordable.

Being so close to Maxim's Cakes nearby, you'd think it wouldn't do a good trade, but this place is often very busy and well patronaged by people from all walks of life. Although small, you can eat in or order takeaway, the desserts here are varied and delicious. My friend had a mango snow ice and I had a popping pearl mango. The shaved drinks are certainly popular as two people ordered before me and three after. Reasonably priced considering it's right in the middle of Chinatown.
Not a fan of the decor but I've never stayed and eaten in, always have takeaway. Good place to visit after a meal and have the dessert here. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly.
Really cute and calming place where you can chill with friends and have some desserts. I usually come here to get the mango snow ice. It’s nice to get after having lunch. I also really like the mango popping pearls and it’s really easy to share. It’s really nice for the price !
A go to dessert place, I can't count the number of times I've been here. They have such a wide variety of drinks for a decent price and although the desserts are often variety of the same ingredients i still love and highly recommend the cold signature herbal jellys (#21 and #22), the honey beans are amazing. Great price and easy access in chinatown!
I usually go to the Box Hill or the Glen Waverley branches but they are closed now, so thought I would give this one a go. Nice deserts, went with a group of friends on a warm afternoon and was very happy with what I got. I got my mango with shaved ice. So refreshing a delicious! Ready to try the rest of the menu very soon!
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I reckon this is one of the most longest standing Asian dessert place in the cbd - it’s still doing so well.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I love the shaved ice cream here as they have so many flavours and it’s great for sharing. I also like their little bowls mixed with grass jelly, sweet potato and taro mochas and pearls in sweet syrup.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: I understand it’s not for everyone and yes there are no health benefits but hey, it makes you happy.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: consistently great and happy to come back again and again.
This place is always packed but they always try somehow manage everything really well. They might not have the best decoration but definitely one of the best place to have dessert in summer. The dessert here is not overly sweet, it’s light, refreshing and decent portion size. No wonder why they’re so crowded all the time!
I come here often after having lunch in the city. A great variety of Hong Kong/Taiwanese desserts that are good value for money. The Bee Koh Moy (black glutinous rice) with coconut milk is a bit sweet and overcooked for my taste (I make it at home) but their tofu pudding has a nice tofu taste that pairs well with the sugar syrup they serve it in. The snow ice series is great also, my personal favourite being the green tea snow ice with red bean and omitting the chocolate syrup. Service is fast and the servers are always pleasant and seem happy to help.
Delicious mango shaved eyes dessert. A lot of typical Asian sweets on offer. They are a price of a meal but you can share with a friend (or a date) as the portion is quite large.
The ambiance in this outlet is quite run down though. The seats are peeling, look old and tired. So come for the dessert so you won’t be disappointed.
This is always my go to dessert spot, whether i'm in the city or in the suburbs. Depending on my mood and the weather, the options are usually either mango snow ice or mixed pudding with herbal jelly and pearl

I really like the dessert here. Taste awesome and the staff is pretty friendly as well. As i see, they’re quite pack eventhough at night. Would come here again next time to bring my friend and my family.
The shaved ice here taste great and is very cheap if you are splitting between 2-3 people when you go out with friends. The menu has a lot of options to pick from too and you can even buy food here not just desserts!
I rate Dessert Story—I find the treats there quite authentic. Very good value for money too. It’s almost a staple after dinner place for a boozy night out. Definitely go for a visit! It’s down to earth—you won’t find fancy fusion items on the menu, but that’s the appeal of this place.
Very affordable, simple and delicious desserts! This is a great place to come in the summer due to all the snow and crushed ice options available. Make sure you bring a friend to share it with because there’s plenty to share! Great staff who work fast and a really cute atmosphere in China town.
Mango pudding with evaporated milk. You can taste the chunks of mango in the pudding - so tasty and refreshing :) The desserts come out really fast!
The fruity iced shaved dessert was really cold and tasteless on the inside.
Sesame and peanut snowflake ice..soo yummy. The 'snowflake' wasn't as cold as the iced dessert, and it melted in your mouth. I would recommend trying this and sharing with a friend as it is big.
Amazing mango and milk flavour, the ice melts into creamy goodness in the mouth. The mango is fresh and sweet. The overall sweetness is just right. Love it!
I wanted Asian desserts so off to Dessert Story I went. This Taiwanese chain had a bleak past in Brisbane, they opened one store and flubbed it so hard with terrible service, bad food etc , they closed down within months of opening. I was a bit dubious of this place but I thought, when in Melbourne and with such high reviews, why not?
I went back here three times for that sago and mango pudding. I'm not usually a mango girl as I like fruit that is both sweet and sour but the mango used here on all consecutive occasions was a marvel. So sweet with a refreshingly sour edge! A perfect balance against the sweetness of the coconut milk sago pudding. So dangerously cheap too!
I also got Taiwanese basil fried popcorn chicken. Freshly fried, with a good whack of salt and pepper, the chicken used was super juicy with a lot of crunchy batter. I loved it! I did not get this three times though, only once!A must visit on my next trip to Melbourne, I need more of that mango and sago pudding!
My usual orders are the Taiwanese popcorn chicken (very moreish) and the mango snow ice with fresh mango, mango syrup and mango popping balls. Delicious!!!
My favourite Taiwanese desert shop is here. Staff are nice and smiley. The combination of beans, taro balls, sweet potato balls, grass jelly, pudding, shaved ice just make me forget all the stress
My favourite place for hot and cold desserts. Great menu options. Always busy at night time. You need to order your foods and pay at the counter then collected your number, foods will come later & no table service .
I constantly come here with friends for the mango crushed ice.
Personally, there’s nothing to fault with it. There’s always the perfect amount of mango and mango syrup on it and it’s not too sweet (those who are not a fan of sweet things would still enjoy this). The service is really quick and you pay at the counter using cash only (card is only for transactions over $10). I personally didn’t enjoy the red bean desserts because they aren’t sweet enough for my palate.
Overall, I think this place is located in an extremely convenient area and the prices of the desserts are very reasonable, cemented by fair portion sizes. Furthermore, it’s always open till late, so you can grab dessert whenever. I’ll always be going back to this place for dessert!
Haven’t had too many Asian desserts before, but enjoy how they are generally less sweet. Opted for the tofu pudding with taro and sweet potato balls, and homemade soy milk. Was very tasty and refreshing. Well priced too, would go back.
One of the oldest dessert shop in Chinatown serving Taiwanese and Hong Kong style dessert. Large selections and tasted great too. However they really need to re-print their menu because it's so old and half destroyed. Prepare to queue on the weekend.
pretty friendly staff, i can’t stop coming back for the mango SNOW MOUNTAIN (make sure you get the snow, not ice mountain) and the mango sago with green tea icecream and pomelo! a bit pricey, but if you skip peak time and go when it’s quiet the serving sizes are pretty good for the price :))
Still consistent .... and value for money.
A few years on and still quite consistent.
It was spectacular the first time they brought in "shaved iced" desserts, I don't think they've added anything more in those worned multi pages dessert Menu "book" :-).
Definitely, still consistent and value for money, between $5-10.00. JT-15/03/2018.
For me this is the best place for people who love cold or hot dessert. The food comes so fast be ready for it hahaha! Its just that the place/interior needs to be updated thats all. Overall 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Great food! Very friendly service and many varieties of asian desserts. I highly recommend the glutinous rice balls (peanut) with ginger soup.
What a nice dessert in Melbourne! My mother really like it and I love it because not too sweet and nice green tea ice-cream, thank you for my lovely day :)
Asian dessert chain known for icy desserts
The Bourke St location can get quite busy which can slow the service at times but overall a good spot for a drink or shaved ice at reasonable prices!
My go-to is in the herbal jelly ice series with pearls, taro balls, sweet potato balls and shaved ice (as pictured below). The mango snow ice is also another favourite with its fine texture and fruit toppings.
Perfect to share when the weather heats up!!
Dessert Story is a really nice dessert place that is suitable for late night hang out with friends (especially on hot summer nights). Tried their glutinous rice/coconut milk dessert which was really delicious, and I loved their refreshing mango everything as well.
Why are you closing down everywhere!? Because of dessert story, mango snow ice is now a craving of mine. A reliable Asian dessert chain. Great place for late night chilling. Don't go, kthnx.
Used to linger around here at late night, either after dinner or after watching a theatre. The Mango shaved ice was fresh and nicely icy on the tongue. My favorite is actually the beancurd with ginger soup and glutinous rice ball with peanut paste.
Number 61! Mango Snow Ice with Pearls! The Pearls pop in your mouth. Very refreshing on a hot day in the city. The snow ice is smooth and creamy, not powdery at all. I am looking forward to trying the herbal jelly next time. Friendly service :)
really awesome yet tempted! many menu there.recommended dessert!i ordered the famaous mango ice crushed.the taste rich in mango which is really satisfied for those who is mango lover.worth to try
Had the warm coconut jelly dessert and it was something different but nice. They also have some small meals to go with the food. I really like the komquat tea by the way .
My favorite dessert place. Their mango snow ice is a legend. The portion is big but yeah comparing the price it isn't cheap nor pricey, and u can share for at least 2 peoples.
Ordered the taro ball series and yes you can actually asked the staff to replace the pearl with more taro ball no additional charges:) love their chewy taro ball
Compare to 3 dessert places I've tried, this one is so far the best. The portion is ok and the ingredients go well together. I don't really like the decoration, too many stuffs and it's hard to think such a place is a dessert house. Not sure if they do booking but if not then do expect a queue when you come.
My friend from Sydney loved the atmosphere and food at Dessert Story so we came to the Chinatown branch for dessert after dinner on Sunday. The place is packed but we got a table at the back. We ordered the mango pamelo sago and hot longan white fungus goji berry soup. We enjoyed our dessert and loved the atmosphere however it's difficult to have conversations as it can get quite noisy.
Come here for night dessert after big dinner with fam , very nice and friendly staffs, ordered a bowl of mixed pudding with tofu herbal jelly and pearl but unfortunately they ran out of pearl , a bit disappointed but the red bean tasted ok
I love to order number 61, it's all mango! Only one out of the many times, the mango was sour. But other than that, it's really delicious. The serving sizes can be shared between two people. It's a great dessert for any season whether it is winter, spring, summer or autumn.
I come here quite often with my mates, it's a great hang out and the desserts are reasonably priced c: service is good and the place is nice and tidy.
The taste of the tofu one is great. Not over sweet, and the sauce is matched very well. A great old fashion style Chinese dessert spot. Remember me of the old days.
This is the best dessert store in Melbourne. I really enjoyed Red Bean Tofu Pudding. It was soft, sweet and creamy. However,Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Milk was over sweet. The watermelon juice was stale.
My friend introduced this place to me. We were tired and needed something refreshing. We chose fruits ice flakes and shared. It was nice choice. Definitely cool and fruity. It would be really nice in hot summer days.
Wonderful golden balls of black sesame and peanut! The black glutinous rice dessert with mango was also really good . We will be back for more . . The other desserts look good also . Thank you
Delicious desserts and a good portion size.
You can actually go here and get desserts as your main dish if you’re a sweet tooth.
Heaps of fruits on there but a little bit too sweet, even for me😂
It gets very busy, crowded and loud in here, so be prepared.
DESSERT DONE RIGHT 🍨🍨🍨🍨
I was feeling like a fatty so some dessert post dinner was due.
They were super busy , but we still got served fast which is nice.
Loud and busy atmosphere depends on the day and time though.
Ordering done at the counter for efficiency. It definitely works.
Food came out fast. Sub 5 minutes.
Presentation was nice. Food was very tasty. Shaved ice as good as its going to get in Melbourne. We ordered the mango and strawberries. Its far better in south east asia though.
The menu is big and they offer hot and cold.
Fairly reasonably priced. 15$ each
Overall we were in n out in 30 minutes. Pretty solid effort considering how busy they were.
Easy to find.
Hard to get parking - city
Would recommend and definitely return.

They have a wide selection of desserts, ranging from tofu to shaved ice. Their best seller of the traditional jelly dessert was really yummy. It serves with taro balls, tapioca pearls, black jelly, shaved ice and cream.
Came here with a friend on 1/1/2022 10:15pm
Reading past reviews, it seems like this place is a hit and miss. I'm pleased to say that it was a hit for me!
Staff were courteous and friendly. Dessert was good. The order came within 60 seconds of ordering!
My only criticism is that my friend's order (no. 31 on the menu) had too many pearls. The taro was yum.
My order (no. 52 on the menu) with tofu and pearls was quite nice. Though, I would have preferred grass jelly instead of pearls.
I would visit again!
