Egon's Bakery has been around for over 25 years and still going strong! I have been visiting Egon's for close to 12 years and their quality of food and service is still the same! Very impressed!
🔆LOCATION🔆
Egon's Bakery is situated in the busy strip of Macedon Square. This bakery has everything that you can think of at at a typical bakery - I really like this place because all their items are made fresh and are good quality. They open at 7.00am every day and are closed on Sunday's.
🔆SERVICE🔆
Service at Egon's is amazing. Its very homely/family like customer service and they are always helpful and love a good banter. If you know what cake you want to order, its best to ring ahead to place the order and they make it fresh. Some cakes are very popular and they only make a limited of them each day. I always order ahead because there has been a few times I wasn't able to get the cake I wanted. Also their meat pies are soo popular you have to go early if you want something specific.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
Passionfruit Sponge Cake (small), $18.00
🔆VERDICT🔆
I have ordered the Passionfruit Sponge Cake a number of times, you can say it's my go to cake for birthdays or gatherings because it's not too sweet and suitable for kids. This time round I ordered it for my cousin's birthday. The small size cake is enough for 4-6 people. We had 6 adults and 1 little kid and it was perfect portion because we had ordered alot of food for dinner. The sponge cake was soo sooo light and airy and super fresh as well. The cream filling was also very light and tasty. The thin layer of passionfruit icing on the top was just enough taste and wasn't too sweet. I love their pastries and meat pies at Egon's and always enjoy visiting the bakery.
wouldn't be Macedon square without it only place i get my pies and fresh bread, my favorites are the vanilla slice, doughnuts, be quick because they sell out fast
The breads and cakes are the closest thing to authentic German you will find around Doncaster, even though the serving staff do not seem to have any German background and most do not even seem to know the German names for their products. Not that it matters... The Streusel, Bienenstich (bee-sting) and Schwarzwaelderkirschtorte (Black Forest Cherry Cake) are the real thing. Excellent!
I think I've found a new place to source delicious cakes at a reasonable price. And it's not too far away from sunnydays headquarters too!
Located along a busy strip of shops in Templestowe, this unassuming bakery (that has been here for years) churns out stunning looking cakes, addictive hot pies and multiple magical slices.
I snapped up their 7 layer chocolate mousse cake which was quite delicate, very moist and totally satisfying. Their vanilla slice and bee sting were top notch too.
So it's bye bye Breadtop and hello Egon's!
I had an appointment nearby Egon’s today and wondered why my wife was so keen to drive me in that directions. Turns out she scouted this venue on a recent visit (it was closed) and remembered the mocha buns from their old Collins street store. To be honest I couldn’t see what the fuss was about but she was adamant that it had to be tried. We grabbed this long roll and also a ginger Christmas tree from the ample Christmas themed cakes and biscuits on display in store.
The mocha bun was like a softer longer version of a scrolls without the folds. I must admit it was a pleasant eat with a cup of tea and a general smear of butter.
I’d be quite keen to come back in and try their pies as a future point as well.
Beautiful little bakery in Templestowe. Ladies were friendly. Make sure you go in the morning, cakes go quickly. We had a medium lemon tart ($30). It was very reasonably priced for the quality. The tart was beautiful. Perfect balance of sweetness and citrus tartness. Everyone loved it! Will definitely be going back for more cakes from now!
Great bakery has amazing cakes . The staff are very helpful especially when you cannot decide. Their pies are better than others nice pastry and filling.
Great bread- especially love the fermented vienna when it's available.
Cakes & tarts are yummy and not too sweet so they'll suit those even with a not so sweet tooth.
Highly recommend!
A small little bakery opened in the Macedon Square plaza at Templestowe Lower. I've passed by numerous times but never got a chance to actually try their food. It is always busy and they have many different varieties of bread, cakes and pastries. I finally got a chance to try it out recently and was lucky enough to get my hands on their popular Almond Croissant. The custard and fillings inside the croissant were a tad too sweet but the croissant itself was soft and still crispy around the edge. Overall it was delicious and we will definitely come back to try out more on their menu.
One of my favorite bakeries around. Been a happy customer since forever. I love their cakes and slices. Some of my favorites would be the bee sting (sponge with custard and crusted toasted almonds), the sour cherry cheesecake and fruit flans. Over the years, I have had numerous birthday cake from Egons. I love how the cakes are not overly sweet and very light.

Best bakery, great staff: have been going here for decades. Best European bread around: sour dough rye best in Melbourne. Bread and pies completely consistent. Range and quality of cakes seems to have deteriorated a little: seeming more Aussie than European lately.
My favourite bakery and patisserie. Been coming here for over 21 years and always enjoy the high quality food and service, everything is delicious! Have always ordered Egons cakes for family birthdays and special events, they taste amazing & never disappoint.
As another review noted some of the older staff members are rude to customers. This aside their food is amazing and some of the best in Melbourne. Their cakes are great value and a constant at any party in my family (try the black forest!). Love their fruit tarts and lemon (yellow) donuts. All of their pies and pastries are great too!
Best Bakery Ever!. I have been going to Egons for more than 30 years.
The pies, sausage rolls and donuts are my favorites but you cannot go wrong with whatever you get.
We even got a Christmas pudding from them this year and it was fabulous.
I love the place.
The best local bakery.. I love a good local bakery. I also love it when it happens to be a great cake shop too. Egon's has it all, and no choice is a bad one! Cakes, pastries, handmade breads and biscuits and for lunch those pies and quiche are so so good. It's been open since the 70s and there's no doubt about why it still is. Keep it up!
I recommend the raspberry mousse cake! The quiches and pies are also good.
Great service yummy pastries. Love their Bienenstich, both the almond and crumb version.
Their staff are fantastic and they never make you feel like you're taking too long to decide. There's so many things that I want to eat in this place! Almond croissants are a must have! Best bakery in the area.
Best bakery in the area. Friendly staff and great food.
Love it! Not too sweet to consume. Lemon tart was awesome!
Delicious!. The lemon tarts, and pink cupcakes are a huuuuge favourite!
I would imagine everything in this shop would be incredible.
Egad, Egon's Is Good!. Egon's Bienenstich (a.k.a. Bee Sting cake) is definitely a candidate for best cake/slice in Melbourne.
Rich, but not too rich. Sweet, but not too sweet. The perfect combination of textures and tastes from the crunchy slivered almond top, through the perfect fluffy cream, to the layers of cake. Close your eyes, take a bite, and time will stop.
There are plenty of other tasty pleasures on offer at Egon's also.
