The bagels here are an absolute MUST! Honestly the best bagels I've had in my life. The coffee is a very dark roast, and the cafe is a quaint converted house into a single room cafe front. Great for a bagel and a read of the newspaper.
So different to its nearby neighbor Coffee Geek Brewers. It’s a dark, moody and a tighter space here with a totally different feel. No soft guitar music on the sound system. Rather, a not unlikeable hip hop mix. It was busier here but even allowing for that service was slow. And, the service was cooler and more distant than at its neighbour. Overall I didn’t find it as pleasant a place to sit. The coffee itself was faultless, though. A super cup. And that’s the main game.
This is surely my final place to satisfy bagel cravings, they have the best avocado lime goat cheese stuffed bagel and an iced latte to compliment it. My favourite place in melbourne for a quite breakfast.
Though it is a small place, the bagel here is extremely yum! The coffee is average. They’ve got the best bagel! The atmosphere here is cozy, staff is nice. Bagel with avocado and cheese is fantastic.
A tiny cafe run by people with hearts of gold, doing great things for Argentinian kids in need. They recently had a latte art competition to raise funds for their project.
Coffee by Maker Fine.
After having brunch at an establishment just a stone’s throw away, we ended up here randomly for a coffee follow up thanks to Timinmelbourne’s eagle eyes.
It’s a quaint little café nestled on a street just off Toorak Road with limited seats available. We were lucky enough to score some at a communal table at the centre of the café.
My soy latte wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing and had a little too much froth, but it was deliciously rich and smooth. My partner equally applauded his double espresso.
Service was polite, although it could have been a tad warmer upon arrival. Overall it was good find. Well done Tim!
I had a coffee with some friends yesterday. I really like this cafe, with its social conscience and all profits given to the social community group which supports vulnerable children in Argentina. Well done.
Now onto the coffee. I had a strong skinny latte which was perfect, it had a good flavour, a nice froth. It wasn’t too hot and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Everyone at my table including Jojo Armani and our respective partners enjoyed their coffees too.
This place is a must visit if you like delicious coffee.
Absolute neighborhood gem! Really good bagels and toppings, and small range of quality brunch options.
Two young fellas running the joint are friendly.
Was driving around the area looking for an easy place to grab a coffee and a bite, not feeling the greatest after a big Sunday and already late for work, the final step served me one of the best coffees I have had in a while and a big soft delicious and plentiful avocado and goats cheese bagel. Absolute treat, had to recommend
One of the best coffees in Melbourne!
Cool spot and great staff. Definitely worth a try. Also had the avocado and goats cheese bagel and that was awesome.
Damn fine coffee. Nothing more, nothing less. Go somewhere else for a fancy breakfast. These guys do coffee and they do it right. Probably the best I've had in Melbourne.
Excellent coffee in an unpretentious cosy space. Seems to be a neighbourhood favourite although people from out of town also visit for espressos which is a pretty good marker of quality.
very high quality coffee is served at this shop front, which, as a tenancy, appears more suited to apparel sales or hairdressing. But the hipster proprietors make do in the narrow confines, jockeying for space behind the coffee machine, and generally getting the job done. Do not come here with an appetite for food - stick with the coffee and you will not be disappointed
When I don't feel like a massive breakfast I come here and read the paper. Nice coffee and a fresh bagel. Nice start to the day without breaking the bank.
4 is for the coffee (I'm a soy FW) - full bodied and aromatic, with a candied finish topped with a smooth and creamy milk.
4 is for the simplicity in menu - today, I enjoyed a seeded bagel and cream cheese (the avocado with goats cheese and lime mix is ACE too) - and rugged, yet cosy decor. One of my favourite locals.
The Final Step is one of South Yarra's best coffee joints. They do simple breakfast items, mainly bagels and birchers, but coffee is their main glory so we came in just for that. We could do the occasional pairings with simple cookie or muffins to have our coffee with, but this time we just got a take away cup to go. We enjoyed the current single origin coffee beans they were using.
This charming little cafe has welcoming staff, decent coffee. The food options are limited (muesli or bagel). I had the muesli for brekky which comes out with fresh blueberries, yoghurt, strawberries and milk on the side. Delicious. I came here for a good coffee because of the reviews. It's hard to find really good coffee. Their coffee is good, I wasn't disappointed but have to admit it wasn't amazing.. The place was really relaxed inside and had nice warm cosy feel. All in all a nice spot for a coffee and something small to eat.
Recently discovered this lovely coffee joint tucked away near our new home. Superb coffee and a creative selection of sweets. Comfy and relaxing and a perfect place to read the paper or daydream. Oh, and they operate with a social conscience by funding the Food For Thought program. Outstanding!
Best coffee in South Yarra. Well the title says it all really. I've been looking for a really good coffee place since I moved to work in South Yarra recently and have struggled a bit - Drugstore Espresso was pretty much my go to place, and although it's great this place is, I think, better. Simple, uncomplicated place, nice guys work there and the coffee's great. Coupled with the fact that the profits go to charity, and I'm sold.
After helping his parents open 'The Courthouse Cafe', in Alexandra, New Zealand back in 2002, Ben knew he wanted to open his own cafe someday. After a 4 year stint teaching in London Ben headed for Melbourne to realise his ambition. He was pretty sure Melbourne would be the place for him with his interest in sport, music and his seedling interest in coffee...

The Final Step is a non pretentious quality cafe in Murphy St just off Toorak Road in South Yarra. Recently they were visited by Jack White who proceeded to pick up the guitar in the corner and played a few riffs. Does it get any cooler? With a piano also in the cafe it has been known for the owner Ben Whitaker to break into a jam with customers. So their passion is not just for coffee and cuisine but also music.
Coffee here is top notch. Rotating varieties, candyman was perfect
Excellent coffee, great staff and fabulous small biz
Excellent. Love this place. great coffee and good vibe.
Amazing. Im no coffee connoisseur..but this little cafe serves up the best i've ever tasted.
Great people great coffee. The staff have got a great attitude and the coffee is good.
They've Got It!. Only a small establishment but it packs a punch. There is probably seating for about 10 or so people inside and about the same on the upmarket milk crates out front. They had 4 staff working away and a steady stream of customers to keep them occupied. We were greeted upon arrival and sat at the central communal table. Our coffee orders taken (skinny cap and a long black), and we sat staring at the cakes and savoury scones on show in front of us. We were strong enough to resist the temptation but they looked amazing.
Coffee came and they really know how to do it well. The cappuccino was perfect temperature and very smooth.
This little spot is one to put on my 'return to' list. Great stuff.
Heard how good coffee is here and had to try it out... It's truly specialty coffee, and just around the corner from home. Five stars.
This place is a reminder that the common assumption often applied in business that 'bigger is better' is untrue. Smallness works here - customers and staff connect, the place is peaceful and you feel like you're a person, not a table number. And, thankfully, they make quality coffee and yummy bagels. It's everything a local coffee shop should be.
Always a winner. I have never had a bad coffee here, staff are all chilled, friendly and well trained. Flat white, espresso, ristretto all highly recommended. I also adore the pear slice they often serve, might head out there now come to think of it!
Nice coffee!! Love it! :)
Best coffee! Friendly service.. Great
Finally got to try The Final Step yesterday afternoon. Friendly staff greeted me when I walked in, only had a coffee though there was some cakes on offer. While I think $4 is pushing it for a coffee ( in a pretty small cup) the coffee WAS great. I can see why the locals love this place.
Glorious coffee served with a smile. Love it.
Awesome Coffee, didnt eat anything but will be back for a cup.
I loved it!. AMAZING bagels and very friendly staff :)
Superb coffee and service. Consistently excellent coffee and friendly service. My theory is that a great coffee served by a happy barista equals a great day ahead. Ben and his crew haven't let me down.
Unsure. Urbanspoon is a restaurant review site. The Final Step could hardly be classed as a cafe, let alone a restaurant, but thankfully (unlike some other places) they do serve a limited menu. Food is quite good too. Just good enough to click 'like', but don't go expecting a proper meal. (Coffee? Amazingly good, one of the best in the area, but this isn't a coffee review site!)
Good coffee.. Came here after reading about it in the Age. Will be back for sure. Great cute little setting. I liked the stools to sit at the piano.
Friendly staff, great service, unique interior. Well worth a visit
3 thumbs up for coffee and the carrot cake. Ben runs this hole in the wall cafe and pours an excellent coffee. Usually has a choice of a blend or single origin and sources from different roasters so doesn't get bogged down.
The cakes his sister makes are great especially the carrot cake - only gripe is when it's all sold out...
Ben always has something going like supporting a Cambodian women's refuge with his tips etc. Nice touch.
Mind you he did have to leave NZ to do great coffee...
Decent coffee made by a NuZelunda. ...and gorgeous cakes made by his Sister. Kinda feels like you went home to have coffee with the fam. Love it.
Small shop great coffee. It is a very cute shop but serve great specialty coffee.

Great coffee. Such great coffee and a cute little shop to visit. How i wish they have some light breakky too..
Glorious Coffee. Despite being slotted down the remarkably un-glam end of Toorak Rd, this coffeehouse is worth making the pilgramage for. It is quite simply one of the best coffees I've had in Melbourne. Nutty and smooth with a really rich, smooth and velvety aftertaste. Goes perfectly with the soy flavours (yes, I'm irritated by lactose) and the man who runs it is really friendly, none of that pretentious wanker vibe you normally get in these kind of places (Seven Seeds, I'm looking at you!!). The pear and ginger cake, made by his sister, is also a winner, especially on cold winter days. Try TFS. You won't leave disappointed.
A little gem. This little cafe in South Yarra is one of my favorite places in Melbourne....Warm and friendly service, top notch espresso, and delicious bagels...What could be better? Be sure to order the cafe special, a New Zealand style flat white.
Coffee dreaming.... Mmm, the smell of freshly roasted beans, friendly smiles and a warm spot to sit and watch the winter pass by. This place is lovely. Simple but winning formula.
...if you love great coffee and desperate to escape the hordes of show ponies that typically frequent this area, head to the Final Step. You won't be disappointed.
Best coffee in south yarra
Beautiful staff who love my friends greyhound! Delightful coffee and pretty amazing spinach ricotta croissant! The best beans are the summer edition sunny daze
Criminally underrated (on Google) coffee house. The selection of beans in the place alone - my word. It's like lining up at a craft beer house. You've got a huge selection of beans and there is an incredible initiative to get profits right back to the communities who grow the beans. The staff are awesome and friendly and knowledgeable. The snacks are good but you may want to go elsewhere if you are seeking a large lunch. I buy my coffee here every chance I can. If you want an amazing place to get your beans and also a great place for a coffee to dine in, look no further.
Visited here about 3 years ago, but I still remember the taste of coffee, and now leaving a good review.
Worth visiting in South Yarra!

Wonderful service, great coffee - I'll find any excuse to visit here
