Absolutely delicious, prestige and exquisite Japanese food, high-end collection of offerings at a very affordable price, elegant and pleasant environment, nice owner and staff, a hidden jewel in the CBD. Will visit again!
The food was 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 so good! Customer service is excellent! Definitely have to try the beef hot pot(? If that’s what it called) the chicken schnitzel was perfect! Love the wasabi mayo sauce 😻 the boss or the manager was so generous, gave us an 3000% fabulous matcha thousand crepes ice cream dessert! Would definitely reckon this place to all of my friends. And this place will be our forever first dining option!
What a gem of a place, really happy with my sashimi set for lunch. Lovely fresh sashimi and a delightful assortment of side-dish satellites including rice, miso soup, seaweed salad, rockmelon, agedashi tofu and tempura fish. Also some of the tastiest pork gyoza in town. Many thumbs up.
Highly recommend Taketori for its delicious lobster sushi, Wagyu uni sushi, sukiyaki and the cheesy scallop(forgot the name). I have been there twice within a week, worth tasting 😍
Real rating 3.75 ⭐️
We had visited Taketori a couple of weeks back and ordered several dishes - here’s what we had!
Tori karaage - lightly marinated crispy chicken with mint sauce. This was a good starter however the chicken was a bit damp making it less crispy.
Salmon aburi sushi - salmon nigiri torched with mayo and teriyaki sauce. The salmon was torched well and tasted fresh and juicy!
Taketori lobster sushi roll - inside out sushi roll with lobster meat, egg, covered with torched salmon! This was my fave for the day as the lobster meat was soft and juicy and you could actually taste it!
Tuna tataki - this was an enjoyable dish as the tuna was fresh and smooth!
Wagyu steak - Japanese wagyu steak with teriyaki sauce! The steak was cooked to perfection and the teriyaki sauce was a clever idea to sweeten up the meat! The steak was soft and succulent making it my other fave!
Shabu shabu salad - wagyu sliced beef with sesame and ponzu dressing. This was actually a pretty yummy salad as the ponzu dressing made the difference and the wagyu beef was cooked well!
Overall, we had a pleasant experience at Taketori however the price we had to pay was on the higher end. We would probably visit again during a special occasion.
The food here is quite good. The place filled up very quickly after we arrived. All the other diners appeared to be Japanese, which I took as an indication of authenticity. Not as extensive a menu as in some restaurants, but what is offered is good.
Highly recommend Taketori for its delicious unagi don (eel rice set), amazing wagyu sushi and crispy sardines! The scallops and calamari were tasty too but nothing beats the beautifully cooked eel, perfectly paired with a selection of toppings that drastically changes the flavour profile and textural qualities of the dish. The interior is elegant and comfortable, would be perfect for a date or special occasion.
(Sorry for the terrible photos, just couldn't wait to dig in!)
Well, the rating doesn’t seem that great with the restaurant. However do no underestimate the food they bring you. They do make amazing food, however the white version of it. These food are not traditional Japanese style, yet well combined with western countries ideas and tastes. I have to say, it’s not the best Japanese food I had, yet the best white version Japanese food I had.
Get the place late before close up and only ordered the unagi.
Taste really good at this price level.
Pretty good place to go and grab the quick dinner
It is a nice to place to celebrate my birthday. Staff is very friendly and good service. My favorite dishes are wagyu beef which is tender, sashimi which is fresh and Grilled Eel which is delicious. Highly recommend to go with friends.
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant, we came here once a week, the favorite food is tuna salad , wagyu steak, white fish sashimi, grilled scallop, and we also like the banquet which is $118 for 2 person, include 8 course. The matcha miller crepes is very delicious. Ask staff for most popular dishes.
As my first time for lunch in this Japanese Restaurant. I would say you’ve must try their sashimi, very delicious and reasonable price. As a perfect timing in the summer. Staff was so friendly and good service. Definitely come for visit again.
This is a very good experience!!! I love the eel box so much, however it is only offered for lunch. That is the third time for me to have meals there!
Taketori was walking distance to our accomodation, close to tram and train station too! Food was amazing, the price was good as their serving size was quite big. Lovely atmosphere, it gave each table a sense of privacy with their decor. Friendly staff, always made sure we were comfortable and satisfied. Would definitely come back! 😊
Been there couple of times. Friendly staff. The lobster roll and creamy scallops are really good. The steak is very average tho not recommended.
Went here with a group for lunch recently and the food was pretty good. High quality gyoza. I had the chicken katsu curry which was nice but lacking a bit of flavour. One person's dish was extremely late which was awkward and a bit unforgivable as we were the only people in the place. Prices are reasonable and the decor is nice.
Came here for a work lunch and ordered the lunch time Sashimi Set. Wow! What a lot of food! And all SO delicious! The food came out in reasonable time, which is important for a work lunch and also impressive given there was 9 of us! They also let us split the bill, which was great as it allowed us to avoid any awkwardness amongst colleagues! Definitely would go back again!
Oh my God …… I was deeply shocked when I saw the volcano roll...that was too much for me !!
I ordered a salmon sashimi, the volcano roll and a bottle of Asahi. The taste is average but truly salient on its quantity... Obviously it's impossible for one person to have all of them unless you haven't had anything for a whole day.
Service is instant and kind. Foods are just ok……sushi roll was somewhat greasy I think.
Love the Volcano Roll here! The roll with crispy prawn tempura, crab and avocado is amazing. The grilled eel is also nice with rice. I do not recommend the dessert here, but the sushi is really nice!
Taketori is about as under-rated as they come. On heading there for a mid week lunch of Japanese cuisine, the place was absolutely deserted - an absolute shock after trying their delicious food which comes at a very affordable price. For under $20, you can get yourself a Taketori Bento - a traditional Japanese lunchbox with appetizer, salad, miso soup, protein of your choice, sushi and sashimi and rice. On this occasion I ordered the beef teriyaki - an exceptional choice - the beef melted in the mouth and the teriyaki was the perfect balance of flavours without being overly salty. The seafood on the plate (sashimi and prawn covered in roe) was fresh, the Miso wasn't too salty and the seaweed salad was full of flavour. All in all a delicious plate which was exceptional value.
Love the inside! The service was friendly, fast and the food was so fresh! The soft shell crab and veggie dumplings was the best part. Considering the amount we ate it was about $140 for 4 people which I feel is reasonable.
We stumbled across Taketori and we're pleased to find good, fresh authentic Japanese food. The sushi was fresh, and had the best unagi I've had in a long time. The dessert was also delicious. Taketori is also quite conveniently a member of Liven.
Lovely atmosphere and food is excellent quality. We got 5 dishes to share and a Saki flight for under $70 so it is extremely well priced.
Try the vegetable sushi with enoki mushrooms and the salmon sushimi.
Wow! Great Japanese cuisine experience! This restaurant is centrally located. The food was fantastic. Staff were warm and friendly. I will definitely be back.
I came here before it closes, theres only a few customers dinning in the restaurant. It is very quiet and relaxing. It took me awhile to order coz the menu has no pictures at all, so i randomly picked a ramen. Surprisingly its really yummy!!!!!!!
Pleasantly surprised ! Walked place this restraunt on multiple occasions and finally decided to try it. The ramen was quite nice , broth was flavoursome while not being overly salty. Chicken teriyaki was also very nice .
Food was nice, like the atmosphere and the deco. Good service and presentation of food in general. Food was delicious, had a taketori pork bone noodle soup.

Looking for a last-minute place for dinner, we discovered Taketori, which is inconspiciously located in a quiet section of King Street. Its modest exterior with black tinted doors and windows opened up into a reasonably large space. It was decorated quite nicely inside, full of dark timbers and somewhat quirky decorations including a colourful origami crane mobile, and although it was perceived to be a more formal restaurant when we first entered, it still felt like casual diners would feel at home.
During birthday, I came here with my friends. we ordered lobster roll, grill scallop, black cod hot pot, chicken teriyaki and prawn tempura. Their taste were very nice. For the service, the waitor and waitress were so helpful. They serve dishes very fast. We know need wait for too long time. In the restaurants, the decoration was very pretty. We so enjoy to having meal here and we will came back for other meal next time. Ireally recommend all of you if you like japanese food or want to try, yo can come to Taketori!
I came here last night using a Scoopon voucher and I found it a pleasant experience. The decor inside is pretty nice and had a slight modern and traditional Japanese look to it.
With the Scoopon voucher, we were able to 'top up' our meal for sides/entrées less than the price that was suggested on the menu.
My partner and I decided to order the Takoyaki and seaweed salad for an extra $10.
The seaweed came first and it was pretty much as expected. It also came with a few pieces of salad. The Takoyaki was served hot and was amazing. The exterior had a slight crispy texture to it and the sauce that accompanied it was great.
For the mains, I ordered the Sukiyaki ramen (this came with a 20 min wait) whilst my partner ordered the Kyushu Tonkotsu Ramen Black with chicken. The Sukiyaki ramen was a bit too sweet for my liking but other than that, it was alright. The Tonkotsu soup was a bit diluted but the chicken was crispy and cooked really well (it wasn't dry).
The restaurant is a little far out from the main part of the CBD and if you're just going there for the ramen, it is a bit pricey for the portion size you receive. But if I'm ever around that area again, I wouldn't mind stopping by to try out the other items on the menu.

Stumbled across this place and very glad I gave this place a try. Ordered the Tonkotsu and tender pork Ramen which the pork cooked well but is very salty. The Sukiyaki Ramen with sliced wagyu beef is great and would definitely order this again, there was a decent amount of wagyu beef and good flavor too. The Agedashi tofu and Crispy Chicken was cooked and presented really nice. Very efficient service and the Japanese decor is a nice touch to this place. Overall I would recommend this place!
fantastic service &food. decor very authentic japanese, during my visit to melbourne i visited this place twice, because it was that good.when i return to melbourne it will be on the top of the list of restraurant to dinewe had dinner and lunch on different days and both were exceptional. i had oyster trio $12 to start and they were very tasty ,the grilled one my favoritewe had the tuna and salmon sashimi and the miso black cod, amaszing. for main we tried the chicken in teriyaki sauce, once again delicious and beautifully presented! for the desert i tried black saseme pudding with poached pears, oh my goodness, - this was delicous too. this will be a "go to "restrauant for us when we return to melbourne.
We went here last week. The food was delicious, the ambience is pretty good, very Japanesse. Food took a while to come out. Would love to try different food when we come back to Melbourne.
Uninviting at first look, but the food is worth the visit.
It doesn't looked like a Japanese restaurant from the outside, very bright, LED's sign, Concrete, big Glass Shop Aluminium Windows and a stair to get to the door, feels awkward and tacky.
Once inside, large spacious room, divided by brown timber looking screens and the many Japanese bits and pieces,
Warmly greeted, service was super fast, too fast for the 7 course degustation menu that we've ordered.
Can be a bit abrupt but they are pleasantly serving us.
There weren't too many patrons on a Friday night, which is concerning at first, however, once those dishes starts rolling, I have to wonder why.
Highlights; Crazy Maki Salmon Avocado, Unagi Sushi and Perfectly cooked med-rare Wagyu Beef.
BYO Corkage is high at $4/person.
If you like Japanese food it is still worth a visit.
Absolutely delicious. Taketori has been on my wishlist for some time and I couldn't see myself getting there for dinner any time soon, so I went with a friend for lunch. It was quiet when we arrived but quickly began filling up. Clearly the office workers in the surrounding area know they are onto a good thing. The food was absolutely delicious and at such a reasonable price point for the quality. They offer a variety of lunch deals including dons, bento boxes, mixed sushi and sashimi, etc. I selected the teriyaki beef bento box and after the miso soup was presented with a box which contained so much deliciousness: the beef was cooked with vegetables amongst the perfectly balanced teriyaki sauce, 3 slices of salmon sashimi with a sesame dressing, a tofu cube in a little broth topped with bonito flakes, a mini spring roll, seaweed salad, and perfectly cooked rice.
Competition is pretty fierce amongst the Japanese establishments on King street and Taketori is a serious contender. I can't wait to return for dinner when I'm not pressed for time and try more items from their menu.
*Updated November 2015: have returned since the first review for dinner and this may be my new favourite Japanese in Melbourne. The grilled steak with terriyaki sauce was delightfully tender, the gyoza are up there with the best, just one tip: if you're with a group ask for everything to come out together: I think they assumed we were sharing so the meals were spaced 10 minutes apart.
Went on a cudo voucher with an eight-course banquet for two and it was really worth it. The Moreton bay bugs were delightfully made and so was the sushi. AWESOME matcha tiramisu too! We also ordered a bowl of ramen to try but that wasn't too good. The soup was quite bland.
Dobin Mushi. The most fragrant soup ever!
Delcious! Again and again!. We have come back here time and time again, it's like a hidden gem!
Food has never missed a beat, the black miso cod, sashimi grade grilled scallops and the lobster maki are our favourites. Food prices are very reasonable dinkum this with the quality it bests most of the over priced Japanese places in melbourne.
Good attentive staff also make the experience each time great. Look out for deals on livin etc for even more value!
-----17 Aug, 2014-----
Delcious and well priced. Originally came to know Taketori, as we over what South Melbourne had to offer.
We went driving up Kingsway and found this place, due to location didn't think to much but thought we should try.
Everything was delcious and the service was so friendly we even got given a free dessert because the waitress wanted us to try the black sesame pudding!
We came back due to buying a 10 course voucher, again service and food was great..
We have now come back five six times over the past few months and whilst hanabishi and shiranui are still my favourites, they are at the high end of the price scale. Where as Taketori is perfect for a relaxing dinner where you want to be a comfy environment and enjoy fresh sashimi.. Yummy gyozas and black cod miso..
Highly recommend
Had a 10 course banquet tonight. Was so delicious! Staff were very friendly too :) I highly recommend Taketori :)
We were a table of four and we were so pleasantly surprised at the quality of the degustation menu. Everything was very fresh with such beautifully balanced flavors. Presentation was lovely. Flavors matched colors both beautiful. Impossible to choose favorites. We enjoyed
each dish for its difference to the last. Thank you for the fine service. We will return
Although the food was late excellent food. We went for the banquet before a comedy show in North Melbourne. The decor was great, the atmosphere was excellent and the food was varied and of a good quality. We hot a snag after the salmon as the next course wasn't brought over for 40 minutes. It was disappointing because we missed the show.
However that was the only negative. Once I had said something about it being late I have never met a bunch of staff so apologetic. Then wanted to do anything to make it better and have to say only positive things about how we were treated from there. I have been missed for orders before and nowhere as ever treated me like that after.
What could have been a disaster was averted and I enjoyed my night overall and got great food and some good advice on how to order japandse food and sake. Overall I would recommend as I don't think they would miss many peoples orders with their commitment to service
Tonkotsu Ramen. Have tried a few ramon house in melbourne cities and none of them turned out fabulous as that in this restaurant. The soup noodle is creamy but not oily. It's was so satisfying. Highly recommended!
Bravo - didn't have great expectations due to the kind st location but everything was fantastic - the beef tataki the highlight. Def worth a try
We had the 7 course banquet and it was sooo good! Every course was so fresh with such great flavours! We sat down the front with the tables in the floor and it was so much fun! The staff were so lovely and I would recommend for sure
Went here last night as part of a Scoopon banquet deal. All dishes were delicious! Very happy with the quality of food and happy to have found a place that does good Japanese. Service was lacking but I'm willing to forgive that. Looking forward to the next visit!
Very good Japanese food! fantastic service!
I love their delicious beef tataki, salmon, and barramundi. The place was very comfortable, and service was very friendly.
Great!. Went there on a 2 for $19 bento scoopon deal. We ordered the ebi furai set and the grilled salmon set. We were very satisfied with our choices and the sashimi was really fresh and tasty too. Very nice, comfortable dining environment and excellent, courteous service, highly recommended!
Superb Tempura. I popped in Taketori for a late lunch, short walking distance from my hotel.
Nice clean restaurant and the staff was helpful in explaining the new invention dishes, which is a huge help for the ordering. I had Crab inTempura, Hot crispy on the outside + fluffy, creamy and soft inside. Crunchy Tempura Crab go along with green salad, what an excellent refreshing combination!
"Takoyaki"was quite nice, the taste of octopus balls with dry swaweed powder on the top. It was good!
The food was excellent, and there was a good selection.
Excellent quality food, and even better service. The staff were friendly and courteous, and the bento scoopon deal was an excellent bargain - I'd happily return to pay full price for the quality miso, sashimi and beautifully cooked salmon that was included in the set I had. Everything about the meal was superb, and given the number of different tasters in the bento box, I was very impressed!
If you're not too handy with chopsticks, the staff will happily bring you a fork if requested, so don't feel stressed about your dexterity! I think fresh seafood is Taketori's real strength, however there are plenty of non-fish dishes to choose from too. Overall, I'd definitely recommend visiting for an authentic, fresh, high quality japanese meal, either for lunch or dinner.
Excellent quality food. Had the special sauce beef and the sashimi. All brilliant. What a pleasant surpris
Great service ! Friendly stuffs and awesome food!!!!
Went here with a voucher deal. We had salmon and beef bento box, I love the taste of all of them especially beef. Very juice and tender, must to try it. But the size was small compared with image advertising.. a bit disappointed. Overall was alright, but pricey without voucher. So will definitely be back with voucher only.
Scoopon deal. For a deal, Taketori's offer of dishes were satisfactory. Delicious gyozas and loved the red bean ice cream coupled with fruit salad! Wouldn't mind visiting again for dinner or lunch.
Excellent lunch menu selections. Really good value for quality sashimi and they come with so many side dishes. Beautiful decor. The restaurant has recently reopened and was pretty empty the day we went. However, we loved the food. Will definitely be coming back.
Beautiful bento in kings street. I order one bento named haven of vege, and my colleague have salmon lover bento , it is so delicious and so many item in the box
Lunch Sets. I have been there to meet friend for lunch. its really surprising to have numbers of small dishes with soup, rice, sald, fruit everything for lunch. Delicious & visually beuatiful. the teriyaki salmon taste lovely with white sesame on top. We had one more glass of wine to be truely indulged in this friday afternoon. restaurant is not busy at lunch time so we got good sevice by the friendly staff.
5 course banquet. My friend purchased a scoopon for a five course banquet and we went on the sat night. the place very good, quite busy but staff still take every custom warmly, food is fresh, made upon order, tuna tataki was fantansic, we had the saki was also great . prawn and vegtable dumplings which was really nice came with the special sauce. tempura which include prawn and scallop, and vgi was very crispy, the Japanese style wagyu beef sukiyaki was so good with little bit sweet taste exacly like I eate in Tokyo when I travel to japan and i enjoy all the food include green tea icecream ,deserve come back
Went for the 5 course banquet... Service was great and food homely and excellent :)
Accommodating staff and fast service
5 DISH JAPANESE BANQUET. The restaurant has a nice ambiance as it is spacious and has a lovely decor. The table by the window offers a cozy corner for a group of friends. We had a warm welcome by the owner Ms Annie Su who also came to chat to us. The Japanese waitressis was polite , efficient and yes, also had a friendly smile! Food was served promplty: nice presentation, all fresh and delicious flavours. The Sake Wine was not as strong as others I had so, did not taste as nice. The meat pot was not great but, the spicy tuna as well as the dumplings (vegs and meat) as well as the fried vegs were excellent! . We were surprised to taste for the first time a Green Tea Ice Cream in a bed of fruit salad: unique flavour. We would recommend and yes, would go again. Thanks
Atmosphere- very relaxing with nice music. I like
the interior of Taketori.
Service- we were warmly welcomed into the
restaurant. Staffs seems highly
experienced on handling pressure. Food
were coming on the table in good pace,
perfect temperature and nice taste.
Overall, My best food we had on the night is 3 way Unagi bowl which come with 2 sides. It is very tasty and filling also I like the idea of getting to enjoy the Unagi bowl in 3 different way. Must Try.
Secondly, Tuna Tataki and Sardines. Good amount of salmon roe over the tuna and the sauce goes well together. Sardines were bit salty for me but if eaten with sauce and lemon it balances out.
We had amazing night there. Highly recommend for quite and peaceful night.
Would definitely visit again.
Surprise discovery of this nice fusion Japanese restaurant in the city during the Midweek Melbourne Money. Very nice food range. Something different. Good recommendation.
Beautifully prepared and delicious, nice setting and friendly attentive staff. Tried many fancy Japanese restaurants in Melbourne, Sake, Koko ect and like this place more.

📝: Been wanting to try out this Japanese Restaurant for a while now. I knew we made the right decision the moment we stepped in. The place smelled amazing with the aroma of Japanese sauces and seasonings.
❤️: I got the Miso Glazed Cod Fish Teishoku set which came with multiple sides like salmon sashimi, fish katsu, takoyaki, tuna nigiri, seaweed salad, miso soup, rice, and fruits. The ramen was also delicious if you’re looking for something to warm you up!
Amazing restaurant. One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Australia. As a foodie I eat outside at least twice a week and appreciate quality and generousity. This place also has a very tranquil and cosy atmosphere.
Been coming here for a little over a year now. Always great, consistent food and service. Great for a date, with friends and even with children. Affordable wine and spirits. Every dish I’ve tried has been tasty. Do try them out.
Had lunch here with the family today. Really great experience all around. Welcoming hosts, excellent food and value for money. The serving sizes were more than adequate from their lunch menu - a welcome surprise. Recommended and I'll be back!
Ordered two kinds of Sashimi. One is the king fish with Yuzu sauce, a new taste, very refreshing, I really enjoyed it 👍 the other is Scallop sashimi, it tastes great as well.
We also ordered the Unagi set, the whole combination is really amazing. I enjoy eating the Unagi with rice and sauce in one scoop.
They also offered soup for you to add in, as one of ways to enjoy Unagi. This set also comes with a big portion, I shared more than half with my boyfriend.
The entire vibe is delicate and elegant. Taketori can be a really good option to consider in a dating occasion.
I would definitely come again and looking forward to taste more different dishes.
