Review Bokchoy Tang - Melbourne

Good location in Fed Square. Came late at night and staff very accommodating. Great place to watch the tennis on the various screens around the Square

We ordered seafoods with spices, but, what we got is a platter of honey and. Red chilly with sea food in it. On being asked we were told the waitress is a new one. Good explanation! We understand the place changed hands.

We don't winge and I never blog but I think I'm being ripped off. The Chinese New year Banquet. Well what can we say? Let's start with "sliced roasted suckling pig served with seasonal salad." 2x 3cmx1cm slices of pork on a slice of lettuce with some shredded spring onions. Pork was nice but the salad was pathetic. "Wok fried lobster....." my serve was ok but hers was really just a lot of shell until we complained and then a small change gave her at least something to eat. "Pawn pancake with chives...." was a chive pancake with stuff all prawn! And the pancake was really a soft taco better served at the local Mex cafe. Well, the king Brown mushroom was ok but the bokchoy was cooked in so much oil it could have lubricated my car for a year!! Inedible. Finally, the duck in the pancake. I thought the first pancake was ordinary but the second left it in its tracks. Duck was good but was only a mouth full.... no accoutrements? We wished we had been anywhere else but here ! At$108 a head we have been ripped off..... this was written by Richard not Debbie.

We went there in a party of 6 people for dinner on a Sat night. I think this restaurant has an Asian corner which is an area at the far end of the long restaurant where there were no carpet and the big floor to ceiling window look out on to steel beams and concrete walls rather as opposed to the Square. This small area was so noisy that you can't even hear yourself think and I noticed that all the other people there were Asians while the Anglos were seated out on the main floor with carpet with views over the Square. However, the most important thing was that the food was mediocre. For entree we had salt and pepper calamari and san choi bao. Calamari was shocking - not a hit of salt and pepper, in thick batter and oily. San choi bao was okay but lack flavour - does modern chinese means you can leave out essential ingredients like water chestnuts. For mains we ordered steamed barramundi, peking duck pancake, kai lan with mushrooms, cumin lamb. If you work on the principle of going to a restaurant to be served food that is superior to what you can do yourself, then all the dishes fail except for the lamb. The only redeeming thing was that we got a discount with our entertainment card - what a sad commentary. If the owner of the restaurant is reading this - better wake up.

We went with really high expectations but the food and the service were really poor. My main dish for undercooked and the waiter forgot to get rice though he remembered to bill it for us. They did flip my dish for another one which was only marginally better. Has to be one of the worst chinese I've eaten, do not recommend.

I went there many many times, and I was never disappointed. I got to know the staff and was offered free appetizers from time to time. The food was great, the staff was nice.

DO NOT GET TAKEAWAY FROM THIS RESTAURANT! And if you do, don't get the duck pancakes! For $38 it is the biggest rip off ever!

Really Good Food, and they deliver too! Recommend the Seafood and Tofu dish.

Just another fancy Chinese place. The food here is really average. However, they charge a higher premium for the environment and perhaps the experience.

Located at the back of Federation Square, this cafe offers Chinese food from the restaurant above.
The vego fried rice was ok with lots of eggs and spring onions. Forgot to ask them to remove the egg!! A simple, oily dish for $16, seems a bit expensive?!?
The coffee was good but the soy matcha latte had lots of green tea powder not dissolved properly making it lumpy and unpleasant to drink. The barista needs to take a matcha lesson!!

Great place! Clean restaurant, good service and fantastic food! I also used my Liven App here and got us a $50 bonus. Was there with my son and will be back for sure!

First time coming here and definitely the last. Been unhappy to some restaurants but with this one I have to create an account to warn people. The restaurant has been relocated and renamed chinotto cafe but still had the bokchoy tang menu. Came here on public holiday and notified the staff that I am Liven member and wanted to use the app to pay, they said ok. The menu they gave us was totally different to what had been advertised on zomato so be careful. Had the sweet & sour pork ribs which was only $14 on the zomato menu but now $24 on the new menu. The waitress did not know about the app and was not trained on how to use it so can't say they provided an proper service. The worst part is paying the bill. As said above the waitress did not know how to use the app and this is my first time using it, gave her my phone and thought she would take care of it, however, results in the owner chasing after us to get us pay. Unbelievable! Simple as, if you are not sure, ask your boss. Oh and the owner wasn't even friendly, treated us like we tried to get a free meal?! Terrible too much hassle, no wonder why they are gonna close down soon! Not happy!

Order: Xiao long bao, chilli cashew chicken, chicken & cashews, sizzling beef ☷ consistently good.

Details: This Asian restaurant used to be my families weekly lunch before a Collingwood game at the MCG!

Service: On a couple of occasions we have not had adequate service with incorrect dishes being brought out or finding it hard to get the waiters attention but apart from that we love this place as they even remember my family 😊

Decor: I love the appearance of this restaurant. Really gives you the feel of being in Asia!

We had delivery tonight from Bokchoy Tang and our choice was so right! Food came on time and super tasty. Although their Lemon chicken was a bit lack of flavor(didnt see any sauce), we still enjoyed a lot. Especially the sweet and sour spare ribs, so delicious and addictive!

A late review for Bokchoy Tang. Came here one day for yum cha lunch and we had ordered quite a bit. Service was nice and efficient but the food was just average. The fried rice was too soft and egg tart was really disappointing. There are better places at China Town, but there is always a long wait before you can get a table.

I have ordered some take away menu, food tastes great. Food quality is very good. Spicy eggplant, kang po chicken and spicy squid are delicious. Very valued, really recommend!

Had three dishes delivered to meet the minimum order of $33. Had the fried rice, duck fried rice and the Peking pork ribs. It's been a while since I last had Chinese so this satisfied my craving.

Despite its vibes, we find the chinese food here pretty average. Fried rice was tasty but texture could be better, xiao long bao (pork dumplings) lacked the moist and juicy soup inside. Chicken and corn soup was alright. Definitely been to better chinese restaurants.

The restaurant has an open kitchen with limited ventilation so you will smell after you eat there. The place is nicely decorated with a freaky Mao Ze Dong picture which has been removed since. We ordered 2 entrees and 2 mains but obviously I was too hungry because there are no pictures of the entrees – xiao long bao and fried salt and pepper mushrooms.

Bokchoy Tang has been around for a while now. Here it has been reviewed for outstanding Asian food by various blogs like Jeroxie etc. So when I got the Age Good Food Card I thought that I would give this a shot. I had seen the place before. It is clean and up two flights of stairs. Spring rolls close up
Jennifer Dee
Service was attentive because there weren't many people although it is situated inside fed square. The view isn't that great either because there's metal structures covering the windows. The salt and pepper calamari was yum, the beef mapo tofu was good. However the crispy barramundi was a let down because the sauce was too salty. Their food still needs to be improved.

Located at on level 3 Federation Square and one of the recommended restaurant on Good Food Guide. I had the "yum Cha" menu and ordered the house special fried rice, spicy crispy squid, and Chili pork wonton $6.80 - pretty small serving. The fried rice $13.50 is little bland though it looks good! My fav of all is the crispy squid $12.80, generous portion and tasty. Service was friendly, restaurant space is great for big family and baby friendly. But won't be back as we are spoiled by many top both Asian restaurants in the CBD.
My Babes And I
My babes and I were looking for a place to eat dinner at in the city before Sam Smith's second concert at Rod Laver Arena. We parked near Flinders Street but couldn't find anything we felt like eating at or that didn't require a half hour wait for a table. Our last option was Federation Square where we spotted a Chinese restaurant, which wasn't very busy, called Bokchoy Tang at the top of one of the buildings.
We were both very hungry at this stage of the night so we ordered Chilli Pork Wontons, Wuxi Style Pork Spare Ribs, XO Scallops and Special Fried Rice with Pork & Prawn to share. I bought a Tsing Tao for my drink and my babes ordered a Booboo's Special Mocktail for hers.
The Chilli Pork Wontons were served 15 minutes after ordering. I found the pork wontons were cooked well but lacked flavour and the chilli oil could've been more spicy for my liking. An okay start to our dinner but I hoped our mains would deliver more of what we were expecting.
The Special Fried Rice with Pork & Prawn was served a few minutes later. Luckily we were hungry because it was a large serving even shared between the two of us. The small chunks of pork were delicious but I was most surprised by the prawns which were larger and fresher than the shrimps I've usually seen in special fried rice dishes at other restaurants.
The XO Scallops that my babes ordered came next. The first thing I noticed was not only the amount of scallops we were served but the size of them. They were larger than scallops I've had at other restaurants and very firm to bite into which shows how fresh and well cooked they are. The large portion of broccoli on the side was steamed well but unfortunately the sauce was a let down. I associate at least a bit of spice when I see XO sauce on the menu but this dish lacked it. Although disappointed, I still enjoyed it overall.
Lastly my Wuxi Style Pork Spare Ribs were served. I'm not familiar with "Wuxi Style" so I didn't know what to expect but I knew I was happy with my decision from my first bite into the meat on one of the ribs. The tender pork meat, covered in a sweet red sauce, was delicious and perfectly cooked. The steamed Bok Choy was a nice touch to balance out the dish and I loved the fried bao, which I used to dip into the left over sauce once I finished the ribs.
The most disappointing part of our meal was my babes Booboo's Special Mocktail. The mocktail, containing Pineapple, Orange and Lemon juices with some sparkling water and bitters, was sour and a little too bitter for the both of us.
My babes and I really enjoyed our pre-concert dinner. Overall delicious meals, much better service than other Chinese restaurants and not a bad view of the sunset over the square ensured a great start to a fun night. So much so that if we were near Federation Square again, and felt like a good Chinese dinner, we wouldn't hesitate in returning to Bokchoy Tang.

If you are looking for a nice, high-end Asian restaurant in the CBD, then Bokchoy Tang is the place to be. I took my wife there for our second date and also visited the restaurant more recently.

While the price is quite high, the food is delicious and the service is divine. The green tea cake is Bokchoy Tang's speciality, highly recommended! The chicken can be spicy but worth the gamble if you are craving something fresh off the grill. The dumplings are mouth watering as well.

If you are on a budget, I would recommend ordering the banquet option for 2; this gives you a number of dishes for a reasonable $.
St!nger
If it was not for the location of this place i dont think anyone would go there. The food is really disappointing. We had a $79 banquet and if it wasn't for me covering everything in chilli it would have uneatable

Amoungst some of the best contemporary Chinese I've had in Melbourne. The Mongolian beef was cooked stunningly + the duck pancakes (although expensive) are very much worth it. Just delicious. Great service + excellent ambiance in the restaurant. Will certainly return.

Been a regular over the years but all is not what it should be. Average food for expensive prices. Calamari entree was greasy, and the side dish of mixed vegetables was bland and uninspiring - they had been steamed instead of stir fried. The main dish of King prawns was OK. However the atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely - it's always been a pleasure to eat in but the time has come to look elsewhere. Won't be back.

Our experience at Bokchoy Tang wasn’t so terrible that I’d never go back again, but based on our meal I certainly wouldn’t be rushing to recommend it. The setting is very pleasant but every dish, with the exception of the jiao zi and the yumcha, just didn’t quite hit the mark, and the prices are a little higher than usual.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
This was a contemporary version of Yum Cha. Dishes were selected from a menu and brought out a la carte rather than selecting from a trolley. I find this was to be better as you receive fresher food (rather than been on the trolley for an extended period of time) and easier to budget too. Food was fresh and delicious and got try a good sample of the menu. The service was excellent as well.
SN
Lovely restaurant top end of the city and depending on where you get seated / depending on your party side your either dining at large tables with lazy Susan's in the middle or smaller tables closer to the balcony with amazing city views in the evening.

Stock standard Chinese fare cooked well, friendly attentive give service - a couple of large notches above street fare.

Always good to return!

Food took too long to come out and they missed part of the order.
Taste was very average and therefore overpriced.
Linda Smith
Ok wouldn't race back though. Food was tasty and we enjoyed the meal with the service being quick. The service was ok. The waitress's english was a little poor but good enough. The tables were horribly sticky though. They have mats in the middle of the table with a selection of condiments on it but they obviously wipe only around the edge. It was just a put off.
Marg
We ordered takeaway and I was impressed by the fact that the restaurant rang me concerned with traffic delays. Food needed to be heated due to delayed delivery but chilli dumplings were great, kids loved pork and prawn dumplings and Szechuan chicken was yum. Not sure what happened with the braised pork it was braised fat and no meat in sight it was the only disappointment - would give them another shot

Food was OK but service was .... Food was OK but salt and pepper calamari that looked like battered flake was not impressive.Service was horrible, they forgot drinks several times, food was delivered randomly so that none of has food at the same time, they didn't have items available that were on the menu, they forgot one course altogether and then tried to charge us for it.
Sorry but never again we will visit this establishment

Great for gold standard Chinese. Had the szechuan chicken and black pepper beef. Very tasty, speedy service and reasonably priced for a CBD restaurant

Not my cup of tea.... We ordered delivery through Menulog which arrived quite quickly, although delivery instructions were ignored.

The cream of chicken and corn soup tasted like a mouthful of butter. The soft shell crab and the hot pepper chicken had wayyyy too much batter. I couldn't even taste or see the soft shell crab! We had to chuck out most of the batter from the pepper chicken and to be honest what's left of it was quite tender and the Szechuan peppercorn sauce was quite nice.

The scallops was probably the best dish out of all of the dish ordered but that was just passable. There seemed to be quite a lot of salt and MSG added as I felt thirsty alllll night.

Overall, Bokchoy Tang was sadly disappointing. It might suit a Western palate 20 years ago, but honestly, people's tastes are more refined now, Bokchoy Tang would need to up its game if it wants to survive.

While generally ok, some of the dishes here are a bit hit and miss and that's really unfortunate (especially the salt and spicy calamari). What's important is to order a range of somewhat different dishes. Some with chillies, others with vinegar, while others are more crispy. Read the sub-text of the menus before ordering.

The atmosphere remains lovely and the service is dependent on who's serving your section on the night.

Friends of mine will be shocked by this knowing that I am a carnivore. However, the Buddha Vegetables is an amazingly simple but tasty offering - and vego friends of mine agree. The right balance of each component vege, with the right level of crunch and softness, and flavour. Really good this - and I have it every time without fail and it's consistently good.
Danielle
In fact, it’s one of the easiest places to get good quality Chinese food any night of the week when you’re on your way to something in Fed Square or at the Arts Centre.

I ordered the vegetarian version of the dumplings and the Buddha vegetables with noodles. The dumplings were delicious. They had been pan-frie

The tardy service and slightly sticky tabletops might put you off dining at Bokchoy Tang, but if you can get past that, the food will reward you well for your tenacity. Set back in an anonymou
MEL: HOT OR NOT
Bokchoy Tang is a contemporary high-end Chinese restaurant which holds a prime position facing Federation Square and ACMI. The long narrow restaurant is impressively decked out in expensive-looking cabinets and feature tables, and a window table is a plea
Jeroxie
I never thought highly of any restaurants in Federation Square except for Taxi dining. They are all a little more pricey, catered for the tourists and food is usually underwhelming. That is my personal opinion of course. But since Mister wanted to try the

Severely disappointed.. I ordered the "crispy" chicken and had all the sauces on the side. Despite the fact that the chicken didn't even have any sauce on it, it was still somehow super soggy. It was also very doughy and bland. The lemon honey sauce that was made to go with the chicken honestly tasted like melted lemon aeroplane jelly, only more sweet. Friend made a joke that we didn't need to get dessert, just had to mix the sauce with rice and we'd have sweet lemon rice pudding. Why was everything so bloody sweet?!?! Also had the chilli chicken dish which was.. really disappointing. I feel so mean writing this, but also feel as if I need to warn people....

The place was very empty (at least I know why that is) and the waitress took a lot of time to get to us. However, she was really nice and attentive so that was really good :)

Terrible Food. The restaurant looks very nice at first glance, but that all stops at the food. I had ordered the crispy barramundi, which looked very impressive when it arrived. However, the moment you took a bite, it was like eating syrup. You couldn't taste the fish or the vegetables (which were very sparse); the entire thing seemed to consist of nothing but sugar. Even digging past the sauce to try to get to the fish, it seemed that the sickly flavour had seeped all the way through the dish. There was no escape. I tried some of my friend's chicken to try and cleanse my palate, though that didn't go to plan. It was absolutely flavourless, and did nothing to get rid of the sweetness that now seemed to be the very essence of my whole mouth. Trying the sauce the chicken came with didn't work either, as it seemed to be more like a congealed fruit dessert than a sauce, and just made things worse. And I'm the type of person that will eat almost anything and be happy with it! First time I've ever felt so disappointed after a meal.
Ahalberg888
Horrible. Go anywhere else but here. Went in for dumplings today before a film at ACMI. Waitress was slow to take order despite only one couple in the restaurant. Food took ages to arrive. I was late for film ( which was in the next building) despite arriving 35 mins beforehand and been assured there was. Plenty of time.

Service is slow, food very poor. Am thinking of reporting them ...uncooked food and false advertising. Third time over last five years. Never ever again no mater what.

First time there with few friends for dinner but the food & services were really disappointed. the manager or boss?( Mid age lady )was shouted to there staff with crazy attitude in front the the customers via dinner time. The food is quiet average and over priced, it taste very salty, I was complaint to there waitress n after few mins the response back to me as it's our cooking style. Never ever come back to this place again!!!!!!!

For a large & elegant Restaurant - Food was Disapointing, overly salty. First visit with a friend today, pleasant décor & friendly prompt service but I couldn't understand why on a Thursday lunch it was empty for the first hour & then came the answer! My friend had ordered Szechwan Chicken & I'd ordered a double serve of XO scallops (one of my favourites) - both meals were overly salty, which in my case over took any other flavour on my palate, thank goodness I'd also ordered special fried rice. Will I revisit - doubtful, there are better Chinese restaurants in Melbourne (Australia's food capital). Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Raw chicken. My cousins and I took our auntie to Bokchoy Tang for her birthday and ordered several entrees to share which were very nice, we also ordered a few mains to share with one being lemon chicken. This was when they lost us as the chicken was very close to being raw, it was not just pink inside (which I think is still dodgy) but red!

As we didn't want to be sick, or die, we obviously refused to eat it and told the waiter why so he offered to take it off the bill. I still can't believe it was served to us, it was sliced so it was very easy to see it was undercooked. The other thing was that we had king prawns with a very sticky sauce, we obviously had to use our fingers to peel them which was very messy and not a finger bowl in sight.

On a positive note, the waiter was very polite! Unfortunately that is not enough to get us to go back there again.

Whats the rush?. Just had yum cha for Saturday lunch, set menu. In and out in half an hour. Food was tasty but no chance to sit back and enjoy. Even asked them to slow down to be told chef had everything ready. Extremely disappointing.
Rkhong
Overpriced below average yumcha. Don't bother. Came out on a rare Sunday family outing for lunch to find the restaurant fairly empty. Then after ordering I realised why it wasn't busy. The service was extremely slow and food tasteless. To top it off it was very expensive. They fool you with their nice decor. Everythingelse about this place is very ddisappointing

I booked a table several weeks in advance asking for a quiet area I had used before as the guest of honor at a family birthday has a hearing problem. And family were coming from interstate ,On the day of the dinner I was advised they had double booked this area and we were moved to an area that was not good at all for a person with a hearing impairment . This was very disappointing and I wonder when resteraunts are going to take seriously those with hearing problems. The food was fine bit we will never be back .it will only reminder of how difficult it was for the guest of honor It was her request to eat at a resteraunt where she would be able to hear unfortunately it was not this one

Love this place! Food full of flavour!

Great service great food. Had gongpao chicken and my husband had pork belly and chilli wontons for dessert. Nice ambience quick service. Handy fed square location.

Hidden gem of federation square. We were just randomly choosing restaurant in federation square. Beijing duck pancake was just beautiful. The portion of dish was quite generous. We cannot finish everything in the end. However the staff was friendly and attending. All in all, I had a good night out with my girls in Bokchoy.

Amazing! Fresh! Great Service!!. Just had an amazing yum cha lunch and cannot fault one thing. Great location, decor was themed, but not over the top and service was fantastic. Service was quite fast and food came out at a very good pace. We are visiting again next week and plan to make this a regular for lunch and dinner. Highly recommend the peking duck pancake, salt and pepper calamari, shanghai dumplings.
Nathan Gurarie
Great food and excellent service. Peppered beef was crazy deliscious.
Dee
Great food and service. Came here for dinner and got the banquet. Food and service were great and there were lots of meat/fish in the banquet and good portion sizes. Atmosphere is really nice, will definitely be coming back!

Jug of Pepsi $45 jug of oJ $60 - what a joke! No wonder it's empty.

Surprisingly good food in tourist trap location. No MSG had me sold. Staff are usually good if a little frantic. Recommend

Initimate and impeccable.... My husband and I went there while looking for another restaurant and got enticed upstairs-well worth it. Beautiful seating, quiet, and the dumplings....heavenly. My husband, who's a Asian food newbie-relished this meal. I have very fond memories of it. Worth navigating your way up the back to find.

Wonderful restaurant.. Another great dining experience at Bok Choy. Delicous food and wonderful friendly staff. Jill MacLeod.

Great food. Went there for lunch today and was very impressed. The salt and pepper squid was excellent, as was the noodles with minced pork. Pan fried pork dumplings were a bit bland. Service was excellent.
Julie Turville
Very Disappointing. Very disappointed, table not set up completely, food was quite average, Mongolian beef had no sauce and quite dry, just a lack of vegetables with dishes overall, and charged for 2 extra drinks on bill that were not ordered and did not drink.
Doubt will ever return, was third visit
Kerry
Great food, Great staff. A group of us had dinner the other night and the food was fantastic and the staff are amazing. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone. I had been to the restaurant previously (but not for a long time) and the service and food it still at a very high standard. Thank you
Sheila Matino
Loved all of it - service -amazing - food - delicious - what an amazing evening - thank you !

Great food, but better deals elsewhere. The dishes we had were very good. We particularly liked the fish head soup and the radish balls. The menu is refreshingly different to most Chinese restaurants, and includes many vegetarian options.

The staff were friendly, however the overall service needs improvement. Our dishes arrived with long gaps inbetween, and the waiters were a bit clumsy.

The price was fairly high, especially since there are many other cheaper dining options of similar or better quality in the CBD. I guess they charge a premium for the location, and presumably they also get many tourists.

I would recommend going elsewhere unless you particularly want to try something on their menu, have a voucher, or simply want great Chinese food on Federation Square.
Lily
Great dumplings!. Went here on a Saturday night for a girls night. Enjoyed the food very much and the atmosphere was perfect and classy, not too loud! Had dumplings which were very lovely and tender.
Allan L
Liked it. Came here for a family gathering. Liked the food a lot and it seemed authentic compared to some of the other chinese restaurants in the city. Cleaner as well which makes it worth the steeper price
Alison
Lovely food + atmosphere. Just tried the new menu for Chinese New Year. It was so impressive. The homemade sausage and meatballs were lovely and so were the pork ribs. Would say that this is one of the better top end Chinese restaurants in Melbourne! Will return with another group of friends.
Jess
Best Chinese ever!. For 7 people it costed about $280 but definitely the best Chinese I've ever had. We ordered two plates of dumplings as an entree which were delicious. For mains we ordered the sweet and sour pork ribs which had heaps of bones but was very tender and the crispy baramundi with lemon sauce or something along those lines which came garnished with the fish's deep fried head and tail ... amongst other dishes. Negatively, the staff weren't paying too much attention and ordering seemed a little delayed which may have been due to the lack of people in the restaurant.
The Critic
Why bother. We had a group of 8 people for dinner on a Friday night. Lighting was dull (which was apparently to create ambience). The reservation was placed in a small corner (must admit not restaurants fault as the complex was built to particular specification), however we could hear conversations from other tables nearby echoing. The result, we found ourselves raising our voices to the threat of yelling for a dinner conversation. On top, the food was average and practically on par with some of the Chinatown restaurants which cost half the price. For entree, the main dishes were salt and pepper calamari and san choi bao including some soups. The calmari was bland and overcooked which resulted in the oilyness. San choi bao was okay but lack depth and flavour. This is meant to be fresh ingredients with alot of flavour. It is more to the contrary. For mains, our two main dishes were the steamed barramundi and peking duck pancake. The dishes took awhile to come out with no apology from any of the staff including manager. There was total arrogance from the manager suggesting that the food will be ready to brush us off. It took over an hour to serve both dishes. Again were average. Not far off from the restaurants in Chinatown which costs half the price and with better service provisions. On the upside upon the dishes arrival, we finished relatively quickly (with some dishes barely touched) to grab a quick drink at beer delux and Transport. Personally, I would question why bother making such and effort for little return.

Dissapointing.

The friendly service, the atmosphere of sitting outside overlooking fed square was quite nice even if it wasn't a spectacular view. A few dishes were quiet nice but nothing spectacular and the bad dishes were actually almost inedible (garlic prawns, wonton soup and san choi bao) overall it was a nice experience, nice company and nice vibe but i wouldn't go back
MattS
The service could not have been better. 100%. Our waitress was incredible, very lovely, helpful and made great recommendations. The food was on time and pleasant. From entering to leaving, the service went above and beyond. Simply exceptional.
Having come from the Italian next door, which we ended up leaving because after 20minutes we weren't even offered water or to see if we were ready to order.
Love Food
It's one of those place that can only get away with customers who don't know Chinese food , worse than take away places
Pat
Unpleasant. Had dinner there with some of my friends visiting from overseas. Nice cosy setting with very few diners on a week day night. Food is average at best. The Kong Pao chicken was disappointing. Other dishes are average. The waitress's service standard was poor. She broke a couple of wine glasses at a neighbouring table and dropped & broke a couple of wine glasses while clearing our table. Some of the liquid dropped on my shirt as a result. She only apologised & quickly went about her work without letting me know that some of the liquid in on my shirt & perhaps assisting me in removing it. Overall, disappointing...paying so much for average food & poor service standard.

Too bad. This restaurant is really bad, yet, they have a lot of staff working there but none of them know abt the menu. Especially the manager, never attend to customer, all the time was just talk to waitress. It shouldn't have this bad service restaurant in our melbourne signate area. Never ever go back again

Don't seem interested in feedback. I wrote to the restaurant - via their own website - about a month or so ago about poor service which led to my first disappointment at what had previously been excellent service and food. They never bothered to respond!!! Looks like that was my last time there. As I said to them in my email, there are so many excellent quality restaurants - including Chinese - in Melbourne at the top end, you can't afford to be complacent. Like me, customers will not tolerate mistakes, and certainly not being ignored.

What a dissapointment :-(. Have been to Bokchoy Tang a number of times in the past and was always happy with the food and service. Tonight we went for pre-theatre dinner and the maitre was aware we had to leave in an hour. Entrees were good especially the scallops were quite delicious. Then we ordered porkbelly for main and asked to have it mild. We got pork knuckle instead. Twice we asked the waiter if this was really pork belly and he claimed it was. After asking in the kitchen he came back to tell us we got the pork knuckle and asked if we wanted it changed which we did. With 10 minutes to spare before we had to leave for the theatre we got the dish we had ordered but it wasn't mild; the waiter then told us that this dish couldn't be made mild. I eat very little as it was too spicy before a mad rush to get to the theatre in time. To top it all up we were charged for the more expensive dish we hadn't ordered rather than the dish we ordered. Very sad that an inattentive waiter can ruin what was to be a special evening. We'll probably not go back again even though it used to be one of our favourite restaurants.

Surprised by other user reviews. Service was fantastic and non-intrisive and food was great. I will be going back

Used to be a favourite not any more!!!. This used to be a family favourite. A place we would go every few months We went few weeks ago and things have drastically changed. The food has gone downhill......our favourite dishes the eggplant hotpot and the poached sczechuan fish were both horrible. Had to send the eggplant back as almost raw and bland, and the fish was also lacking in taste and flavour. It was fish thrown in dishwater. Lacked the zing and bite of the schezuan peppers. The hostess did agree that the dishes were not same as before perhaps due to change in chef. The other dishes to that we ordered were not as tasty as they have been in the past. Overall a disappointing dining experience. We have noticed that in the past one year the quality and taste of food has declined. But this time it was beyond repair. Definitely off our favourite list.

The food is nice, end of story. Very expensive , poor service , food took a long time to come out, staff are understaffed and very rushed. No music and no ambiance . As I said the food is nice but there are many other wonderful Chinese restaurants in Melbourne

Disappointing, we were fans of the restaurant until tonight. We were ignored by the wait staff. we waited ages for our drinks to arrive, our first main came out 10mins before the rest and we had to ask for cutlery and plates cause we didn't have any. Food was oily and overly salty too, won't be going back anytime soon.

-----05 May, 2012-----

Classy restaurant, loved the Peking duck rolls and steamed whole barramundi. Pianist is great too!

Organic ... NOT!. I like the dumplings, but expensive. can get similar good dumplings at half the price elsewhere. Space is nice too. food is generally mediocre. What really annoys me is the menu saying organic produce is featured. I asked the waiter what was organic and they couldn''t provide a answer. A subsequent email also provided no details. I doubt anything is organic. So this would be a case of greenwashing. why do they bother?

Came here with 2 Friends on a Thursday night. First impression was great, the restaurant is beautiful and very chic! The staff were attentive and friendly too. The food was fantastic. Loved the eggplant hot pot. My experience was a great one :)

Atmosphere was great, service was good, but not great. Unfortunately, except for the black pepper beef, we found the banquet dishes quite bland. Even the tea, was watery and insipid. A shame as we were really looking forward to quality Chinese. Given the price I would expect more and have certainly had much better elsewhere.

Worst customer service!!. Rang up to make reservations & enquire about the dishes on offer. The girl who answered was reluctant to advise us, saying this is 'not a takeway place' you know, this is fine dining. Then she proceeded to say that all prices on their menu online is not correct, and there has been a significant increase with everything on the menu. When I asked her to further elaborate, she just said that if we were not happy with price increase, we can look somewhere else. 'It doesn't bother us!' (her exact words!) So yes, we will go for a restaurant with real class..in fact I reckon that we get better service from our local takeaways! A shame really, a group of us wanted to try this out, pity that the restaurant is let down by poorly trained staff!!!

No msg. I think this place is one of few Chinese restaurants here that says there's no msg in their dishes. So I like going there cos I don't feel so thirsty after. I also like the setting as it's spacious and your chair is not back to back with some one else's. Most Chinese restaurants are crowded and too noisy, here you can at least hear each other talk. As for the taste, well, it is not bad considering this is Australia not hong kong...

We ate here before a show and really enjoyed it. Service was great and so was the food. I'd eat here again!

We werent blown away by the food. Setting is gorgeous, pity one can't see past the black structures. Came to $25 per head for 1 appetizer & 1 main, this is after us using our entertainment book. Not sure if I'll be heading back.

Average food, good pianist. The food was ok, nothing special but decent enough. Best part though was the live piano music.

Meh. A "just alright " experience for what I paid . Won't go into specifics, but found it all rather unimpressive.

At $62 Per Head for a "banquet", I don't see how two shared salads consisting of chopped Iceberg Lettuce, a few slices of Red Onion, a couple of Cherry Tomatos and a heavy handed dressing of Soy and Plum Sauce could possibly be considered a "course".

Wouldn't go back In a hurry.

Last time we came at lunchtime we were seated at the far front of the restaurant & no one came near us for 20 minutes. Totally ignored. We got up & left & none of the staff made any attempt to stop us. They have lost 2 good customers & I have deleted my previous good review.

-----19 Apr, 2011-----

We had a banquet last Sunday night & it was delicious. The service was attentive & timely. I have eaten here 4-5 times now & each time the experience has been very enjoyable.

Poms in Oz kind of place. Being Poms we have struggled with the lack of good (UK style) chinese food in Aus and are delighted to have taken the chance with this gem of a place. We arrived early evening and were only the 2nd table in; service was fab, ambience was great (ideal for a date) and the food was good quality and very tasty. More like a british chinese and uses chicken breast, hurrah!!!!
Don't be put off by the other bad reviews unless you are after a cheap yum cha experience that is. Mains are approx $25; our meal set us back $100 for 2 starters, 2 mains and couple of drinks. Not bad for the location.

Food standards...dropping. I used to be a frequent visitor of Bok Choy Tang last year (at least once a month) but I've found the quality of food to be mellowing out.

My boy took me there for our first date and the whilst the food is not bad, it wasn't as good as it was. But for the amount you pay, it is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is definitely 'dining' standards. The decor is a fusion of east and west - a piano, othello game table, chinese tea set and a slightly disturbing canvas picture of what looks like an inference to communism.

I'd go there again because it is good value for money and a great place to relax and chat for hours.

Bok Choy (lost its) Tang. Unfortunately Bok Choy Tang has gone downhill since my last visit. Friends and I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago.

The service was good but the food lacked the flavour it used to have. The San Choi Bau was bland and the duck spring rolls were ok. The best dish was probably the minced prawn dish.

Won't be going back until I hear it's improved.

Good food, good value yum cha

Less than impressive. Got there early (5:30) on Friday before a shows at 7:30. The spring rolls and dumplings tasted like they were leftover from Yum cha and had been reheated. Duck salad was 4 pieces of duck on a bed of shredded iceburg lettuce. Very unexciting. Had "the slow roasted and then wok fried pork belly". Had never been slow roasted and tasted like soggy bacon. Baramundi fillets were not fillets at all but were deep fried pieces ina sweet and sour sauce. Again, very unexciting. We complained and the manager came to show us the thinly sliced pork belly. Obviously never slow roasted. He then argued with me about who had the most experience with Chinese food. Bad front of house approach. We also had the duck breast that was ok but nothing great. Finally they brought us some beef that had been freshly cooked. Heavy on the soy sauce but edible. Would not go back. Try Red Emperor instead. A bit more expensive but service and food are right on

Always get great service from the very friendly staff. Fantastic food, always love it. This is a hidden gem of Melbourne. I highly recommend this lovely restaurant. I've never had a bad night here, and I've been dining here since 2010.

Good food - last two times I've been going to a show so had about an hour to eat. Highlighting this to staff they were accomodating including making recommendations on what not to order because it took longer to cook. Not your typical Australian Chinese restaurant I don't think but I always enjoy their steamed king prawns with garlic!! Entrees gave varied but their vegetarian spring rolls last night were good! I went with a friend and we shared 6 pieces spring rolls, prawns as main and steamed rice plus a glass of wine each. Cost was $30 each! Enjoy going there for dinner - especially appreciate the effort they've gone to when we've had to be out quickly!!

A hidden gem. 6 of us, We had the $38 banquet. The food was great and plenty of food. Good value for money. We had a good night out!
David
Average slow service. Expensive. Eat on Victoria street instead!

Arrived at 11.30 on sat for yum cha and it was dead empty. This made me nervous as too did the banquet only yum cha menu but we were pleasantly surprised The service wad friendly attentive but not intrusive and the food was delicious not oily or over flavoured. This is a perfect place for a family yum cha I gave it an 8/10 and my wife gave it a 7.5.

Overpriced gastronomical misadventure of blandness. How hard is it to cook good Chinese food? Well apparently bokchoy tang makes it extremely difficult. What strikes you first is the wide open opulent setting, and the next thing that you notice are how many empty seats there are..... Understandably. We had the $58 banquet meal where only the fish (which we warn you in advance had very small bones to make life difficult) delivered on taste but failed on preparation. Forget this place like everyone else has until they start to taste their own food.
