The best cafe in melbourne.
This is one of the cutest cafes in South Melbourne. David, is a very knowledgeable barista and makes provably one the best coffee's I've had in Melbourne. The food here is all made in the cafe and they have different options for all dietary needs!

Had a lovely time at Cafe Zappa. The soup I had for lunch was delicious and coffee after meal was also great. The staff were friendly and super hospitable. Looking forward to coming back. Will be recommending this South Melbourne gem to my friends.
What a little gem ! Tucked away off the main strip, Cafe Zappa is a great find. Really inviting with a rip roaring fire going, really friendly possibly husband and wife team ? They just worked so well together- I had the vegetarian breakfast and a chai tea, haloumi cheese, pumpkin, spinach, mushrooms and peas with avocado and toast. Served really quickly and presented well, just fabulous and really reasonably priced
Had a really quite nice lunch here in November 16, the bread tomato salad with crispy Kalamari was delightful my daughter had a chicken sandwich that had grapes in it, sounds odd but she gobbled it,
Never strayed off clarendon st before, but found this little place, had a really nice sandwich, coffee was ok, and it was only $12.00 better coffee would help,
Envious location ....
I love its location, not the busy part of Clarendon St, South Melbourne, next to the Town Hall and Op Shop, Red Petite is not too far away, perfect lunch & coffee combo.
Parking is reasonably easy too.
A bit of history with the building, not much renovation, but an enjoyable space, just fresh air could be an issue or eat outside.
Good Menu, well priced, nicely cooked and coffee is above average.
Good value for money! The portions are big and the food is really good and filling. I got an Oreo milkshake and chicken and avocado bagel. Both were great and way bigger than I thought it would be. The only annoying thing was that they...
Best Breakfast Bagels, coffee and donuts in town. I'm serious! Bloody yum! I work in the area and refuse to go anywhere else. Certainly can't afford to go there everyday but when I do, the money is worth it.
Simple delicious food (don't go past the sandwiches and baguettes) without breaking the bank and the last bit is saying a lot considering Cafe Zappa is located in South Melbourne. It's nice when you don't have to pay a premium for your sandwich or coffee just because the cafe happens to be located on prime real estate location. Cafe Zappa has been in the cafe scene for ages and while the menu has remain relatively safe, you won't be seeing any de-constructed whatnot or compressed fruits or even petals in your dish, many flock here for exactly just that - simple tasty food. And not to mention exceptionally friendly service. For those who have joined the freakshakes movement, Cafe Zappa has recently jumped onto the freakshakes bandwagon and I must say, their game is strong. The only letdown is the banana freakshake - tasted too artificial, they should use the fruit and not the syrup. Stick with the chocolate freakshake or their coffee. But then again, my friend did lament the lack of latte art so I guess you can never please everyone.
Sandwiches great toasted , tasty Resonably priced . Nice laid back spot . Going back for more .! coffee great , staff friendly and service good . In a nice street too .
Love this joint. Good wholesome Italian
Tucker. Fireplace irks beautifully in winter
Very friendly staff and Michael has kept the tradition going
Zappa’s has been a solid South Melbourne go-to for almost 10 years. Specialising in the breakfast and lunch trade, you can always rely on them for a great coffee and filling snacks, like toasties and pastries, as well sandwiches, pides and baguettes. Their signature dish however, is their Gnocchi. Whether you try the meat ragu or the vegetarian sauce you will not be disappointed. I’d be quite happy to make future visits to Zappa. Again, I think it deserves more than it’s current 74% on Urbanspoon, and a major plus is that you can sidestep any jostling for tables that is prevalent at the other cafes, especially those closer to South Melbourne market.
This little cafe is family owned and have been around for ages. It is a South Melbourne institution.
Excellent coffee, service and altho my breaky was not overly appealing looks wise, it tasted good and thats the main thing!! What a corner gem:)
Still good coffee... Nice spot to chill
Cozy. Quick. Quirky. Off the beat of Clarendon which is always a bonus.
Awesome. Just had an A++++++++++++++++++++ lunch. Both food and service outstanding. Thanks guys!
It is so lovely to come in on a wintery Saturday morning and warm yourself by the open fire in this fantastic eclectic little cafe that beats with the heart of South Melbourne. Beautiful rich creamy coffee and delicious food that reminds me of Italy. Thank you for making our breakfast amazing.
Nice people, great food. Highly recommend the purgatory for breakfast. Put in the chilly to fan up the flames.
It's got style. Love to sit on one of the two wooden chairs outside with a short black and watch South Melbourne go by. Really good coffee. Thanks Bello
Friendly and fun. Zappa is so quirky! The staff always have a laugh with you and are welcoming. The coffee is generally good, and the food tasty. When I'm over in South Melbs this is my go to joint.
South Melbourne icon. Best osso bucco of my life. Very affordable, wonderful warm feeling from the place, staff and food. Can not recommend highly enough for a high quality quick breakfast or lunch.
So so. Tucked away just off Clarendon St, Cafe Zappa has a refreshing feel about it. The owner was spritely and up for a chat. We sat outside for breaky and ordered up some coffees. The cappuccino was a good start. I then opted for the porridge topped with cinnamon and banana with a side of yoghurt. The porridge was fairly average and plain. If I didn't get the side of yoghurt it would have been a fail.
The egg and bacon focaccia looked good. When it came time to pay the bill the owner gave us a complimentary Italian donut each. A nice touch which left us feeling positive about the place.
As serial brunch eaters (eat out at breakfast about 4 - 5 times a week) it's safe to say we have tried many an egg in Melbourne. The Eggs Florentine at Zappas is exquisite! It comes with two freshly cooked cheesy potato crunchy things, lovely Turkish pide and their homemade chilli oil if you ask for it. The eggs are cooked perfectly and the hollandaise is delicious. Best breakfast I have had. Heaven on a plate!
The Soy Cappuccino is nice and hot, creamy and divine.
As for the venue itself, it's in a quaint old house in South Melbourne, with quirky knick knacks and decor. The owner, Michael, is always in there with a cheery and welcoming smile. If you visit the "facilities" in the back, you will pass through the kitchen and see the cooking in action by the lovely Italian lady!
A firm favourite.
Great BLT, spectacular coffee and awesome friendly service.
I love this place so much. I have been here countless times, the coffee is divine and brunch is always so yummy, and the owner is often in there and is the friendliest man ever! Love Zappa!
Very good! Fast service, creamy yummy coffee and yummy chocolate milkshake. Food came out very quickly! Fruit salad was great with yoghurt and honey and muesli. We also got bacon and fried eggs which were cooked to perfection. Great and cheap place to go to! Will definitely be returning
Yeah Baby!!. What a cool little place. Yummy homestyle cooking in the pasta department. Great coffee, honest food and not pretentious. Just one complaint why isn't that owner on the menu, he looks DELICIOUS!!!
Well where two start . Instantly greeted by barista . And then shown to my table but a dappa host . And within 5 minutes I was sitting I'n front of a fire with a golden elixir . The coffee was so good I finished it before it settled . And another had already been ordered . Excellent atmosphere and decor with a home feel. Come to Zappa and enjoy
Hit and miss, but when they hit, it's good.. Been there twice, the first time i got a lamb sandwich which was fairly disappointing, the lamb was really dry, as was the bread... I was hungry though, so i kinda forced it down with water. My boyfriend had a steak sandwich which was good though, i stole a bite.
I like to give things a second chance though, and I was kinda tempted back by the decor and Zappa's proximity to the Butterfly Club. Got a breakfasty thing called 'the Purgatory' which was REALLY good, eggs with spinach and chilli sauce stuff and yeah. Tasty.
The waiter seemed kinda pretentious though.
Try the Gallipoli with spinach and cheese ... Yum!
Love the place! Extremely friendly and familiar service coupled avec superb coffee. Have yet to sample the menu but will definitely come back for more. Highly recommend it
Friendly and cheerful service. Picked up an afternoon long Mac on a weekday, the Place was packed so opted for a takeaway. Awesome red star espresso with a thick-ish dollop of sweet textured milk was a nice surprise. Will be back for coffee and to try the menu.
BETTER COFFEE THAN ST ALI!. Zappa is renowned for its coffee and its friendly staff. I mean sometimes you need to see a friendly face, and you get that from Michael and most of his staff (St Ali take note) - even the temperamental barista Ash sometimes! Most of the food is fabulous; some average. You'll work it out. A Sth Melbourne institution. OMG, the coffee! Seriously, it's so good, it's addictive.
Zappa is a quirky little cafe in Bank street that has great coffee. On the morning of this review we ate eggs Benedict which I must say were amongst the best I have had in Melbourne. If you like great food and a little grunge with good service try Zappa!
Good, honest and best of all..homemade! Go in more than once and staff will know your name!
Great place for a quick coffee and friendly staff. Shop is clean and has in and outside seating. Fair priced. One of the few places left that remember your name and your coffee order if you frequent enough.
Great place for a quick coffee and courteous staff. Has an outside seating area surrounded by trees . Fair priced as well.
I love this place! They’re really friendly and great coffee! Best coffee in south Melbourne
Great coffee and flavoursome food! The service is extremely welcoming and friendly, my absolute favourite cafe in the area!
Some very delicious food on the menu. Super fast service. Great coffee. Three big ticks in my book. Stop in if close by.
I have been a regular at Cafe Zappa for quite some time now and I cannot fault it. The soy cappuccinos and soy mochas are creamy, delicious and pack a punch. I don't know what beans they use but they made a great choice.
The Eggs Florentine is my usual order. The poached eggs are cooked perfectly, the hollandaise sauce is homemade and fresh, the Turkish Pide has just the right amount of crispiness and it even comes with two cheesy potato croquettes which are divine. I always ask for their homemade chilli oil on the side too - wow!. It's got to be my favourite breakfast. You can also buy little jars of the chilli oil to have at home.
They often have samples of food at the counter. I've tried their vegemite/cheese on Turkish bread, and some croissant. Delicious!
Every Thursday fresh gnocchi is available to eat in or takeaway, with a choice of different sauces for both meat eaters and vegetarians. This is homely Italian cooking at its finest.
The decor is very Melbourne, quirky, full of character and interesting knick knacks in an old house. The cafe is named after Frank Zappa himself.
The staff are welcoming and the owner Michael always seems to be there, and up for a friendly chat. I think the cafe has been there for 15 years and I can see why. It's a real neighbourhood gem and popular with locals who probably want to keep it under wraps!
