Our first venture out since Covid and this hit the spot. Wonderfully warm service, great tasting menu (excellent value) and The Vegetarian was very well catered for. We'll be back for pizza next time!

Best ‘in-authentic’ Indian in Melbourne. These dishes are so full of flavour. Rich, slow cooked curries, and modern takes on traditional street food. Favourites are the dense and silky Aunty Dahl, fragrant prawn curry and the balls of happiness are a serious mouth full of flavour. Oh and the spicy cauliflower is a must try too!

Went with a friend for lunch. Had summer thalu, reasonably priced and good portion, you can add naan to the thali if you want.
Good decor and easy to locate. Staff is friendly and its a recommendation to book in advance as this place gets quite busy during popular hours.
A good place to be

I was quiet sceptical while trying an Indian place as most of them tend to disappoint. But I should saw this place was amazing. Good food that I will recommend. Naan was the highlight and so was the papdi chat. Although just one little feedback “batata wada is not from south India but is a Mumbai street food”

We booked our dinner at daughter in law, as the restaurant is a self proclaimed "unauthentic Australian Indian" - making me laugh.

Ordered:
🍱 Tasting menu: Chef's selection of a variety of appetizers, curries, naan, rice and dessert ($55.00)

Review:
By the time we got to our main dish, the delicious and expansive thali, my friend and I were incredibly stuffed from the 5 appetizers that came before it!!

Be warned: they do offer oysters as an appetizer but if you can't stomach the thought (like me) they're happy to swap you out for a vegetarian number 😎.

The thali main was easy to eat. It was fun trying to see what matched with which, i.e. does the naan go better with the butter chicken? Maybe the lentils?! Maybe the other curry here...
Papadum was a little too flakey for me and the texture reminded my friend and I of prawn cracker. We were hoping to get the thin snappy flatbread, but getting thin prawn crackers look alike was not a loss.

Looking around, chef's tasting menu seemed to be the most popular choice so I would also recommend you get it if you were coming here.

The interior is super modern, with a projector playing snippets of an Indian drama. Super fun and a great conversation piece. Service was also decent, but they forgot about us for a while as we sat there waiting for our final dessert lol.

The food was very nice and a good twist on other Indian restaurants. The lack of service almost ruined our night and we almost missed our theatre show. But the food definitely made up for it

We were recommended here by a friend and have to admit the food did not disappoint. We started with beetroot yogurt kebabs and the scallops. The scallops were lovely and delicate but the yogurt kebabs were excellent.

For mains we had the Delhi ka channa and the black lentils with an assortment of breads. The channa which is essentially a chickpea curry with good dose mango powder which gave it that wonderful punch. The black dal was a bit sweet to our liking.

We finished the meal with kulfi and gulab jamun. The desserts were ok would have preferred to see something different then the age old traditional dessert. Overall an excellent meal, attentive service and good quantity. However I would recommend making a booking prior to going.

Has an absolutely delicious dinner at Daughter-in-law. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was diverse and full of flavour. We shared the balls of happiness , the scallop ceviche, the trout and tuna crudo, the butter chicken, the zucchini and pomegranate salad and the mixed plate of naan filled with goats, blue and cheddar cheese. I couldn’t fault any of the food. The starters were light and fresh and the curry and the naan was warm and satisfying. There was a bit of a stuff up with our order ( it was forgotten about) but the staff were incredibly apologetic and were very generous when sorting out the mistake.

A couple of service issues - had to ask multiple times for water, mixed up the drinks order - but that was outweighed by the food! Happy to put it down to a bad night for service.

Wow what a restaurant! We absolutely love Indian food and this place was just amazing.
We opted for the set menu and each dish was incredible and what a journey for the tastebuds and senses. We added a trio of naan which included a blue cheese one and a truffle one, and was fantastic. The drinks also were so well created, they were everything you love about Indian food, in a drink. Highly highly recommend and can’t wait to go back!

Dined at Daughter In Law for dinner with work colleagues.
We had a table booked for 8 people and opted for the Tasting Menu.
Firstly, decor and overall atmosphere was just the right amount of modern and traditional. The music was a tad loud, as we found ourselves yelling to be heard.

Daughter In Law were very accommodating to dietary requests as we had a few different requirements to cater for (including vegan, gluten-free and allergens).
We ordered our drinks first, I had a Watermelon Cooler cocktail. It was very refreshing and mixed well!
We opted for the Tasting Menu as it had a variety of dishes to experience.
First up was the Gol Gappa balls, one bite and they burst in your mouth with yoghurt oozing out with every crunch.
The oysters were flavoured uniquely, but tasted great.
The Colonel Tso's cauliflower dish was basically the vegetarian version of sweet and sour pork; from the batter to the spices- really can't go wrong with that!
The yoghurt croquettes were one of my least favourite appetiser as the flavour gingery(?) was too strong.
The dish that came next really took the cake!! Tandoori chicken! It made everyone wishing there was more than just one piece each to go around. The only slight downside was that we were only provided one spoon to dispense two different sauces (corriander and yoghurt) causing an unpleasant sauce cross-contamination for those who preferred one over the other.
Getting over the sauce anomaly, the chicken was tender and delicious.
As for mains, we were presented with a diverse thali plate with small perfectly portioned of butter chicken, coconut vegetable curry and lamb Rogan Josh.
Served with rice, a papadum and some naan.
This was a great way to showcase different curries offered at the establishment.
The naan was great.
Dessert was a very rich tasting kulfi! Lovely and sweet to top it all off.
I would say the composition of the Tasting Menu was great.
Ultimately, a good experience.

My friend and I took our other friend here as a birthday treat. We ordered $200 worth of food. For the most part, it was delicious. Naan was a bit greesy and the pork neck curry and the vindaloo both tasted similar. Too much salt in the vindaloo for sure. We ordered the spare ribs too but they forgot to bring them out. Good experience never the less. If you are hard of hearing, don't go here as it gets very noisy.

Eaten:1. Balls of Happiness - served cold, small crispy ball maybe same diameter as a 20c piece, filled with yoghurt flavoured with mint & cumin.  You are instructed to put the whole thing in your mouth at once (it would probably fall apart if you tried taking smaller bites.  Pretty tasty.
2. Papadi Chaat - described as "the motherland's version of nachos". I do think this description needs to note that this dish is served cold.  It was okay... probably too wet really and probably undersupplied with chaat.
3. Batata Vada - a ball (maybe same size as a tennis ball) of spiced potato.  Looked interesting and was pretty tasty.
4. Palak Paneer - pretty basic spinach/paneer curry.  Not too much flavour.  Not a favourite dish of mine.  I feel that for $22, this should come with some rice (noting that the separate "aged basmati sella rice" was $6!").
5. Beef Short-rib - even though the menu only has this as a singular, I felt like a single rib was too little for the price point.  The plate looked under-filled to me.The rib itself was nice enough, but didn't really have anything special about it.
6. Stuffed Naan.  The description didn't make it clear, but this was three separate (small) naans with different flavourings.  They were okay.
7. Deluxe Thali plate (separate lunch) a nice array of different dishes served by the 1/4 cup.  This means if there's something you really like you don't get enough of it, but it's a decent amount of food and most of it is pretty tasty (although the butter chicken was pretty blah).

Overall, the food is of a good quality, but the price points on a few aren't adhered to by the servings.
Venue itself is very loud - primarily due to loud music being played (which everyone then has to talk over).  The bartender even commented to us that the music was too loud. It also made it difficult to understand our waitress.
Probably a 3.5 in the old scale, but a 3 felt too low.

Looking for great deal lunch during weekdays? This will be the spot! Not to mention, the place is very aesthetic as well.

$15 Thali came with 4 curries with rice and papadum. I added garlic naan as well which was really good. My fav definitely will be the unauthentic butter chicken! Housemade chai and mango lassi are worth to try too.

Will I be back? Surely!

Daughter in Law is fantastic. I booked for four online and we were seated in one of the lux, royal blue velvet booths. The cutlery and glasswear is beautiful and there was a 1960's Bollywood film projected on the back wall. This restaurant is very photogenic. The cocktail list was exotic and different and the food delicious. For first timers I'd recommend getting the Colonel TSO's cauliflower and the Balls of Happiness to start, then some naan pizza, a curry and the beef short ribs to share. The cucumber and fennel salad with yogurt was a nice addition as the cauliflower was quite spicy.

This place is awesome! I celebrated my birthday with 12 others and the large table was a great shape and we could actually all hear each other. As we were a large group, we had to all have the tasting menu for $55 each, which did not disappoint. The food was delicious, different and great value for money. Service was also 10/10! Really friendly staff. Would recommend to anyone, including those with dietary requirements.

Interesting take on Indian (or Melbourne-Indian) cuisine, combining flavours and techniques from different regions.

Colonel Tso’s Cauliflower – the florets are lightly battered and fried, covered in a sweet and tangy sauce.

Papadi Chaat – again sweet and tangy, but the dish is very textural with crispy elements throughout the dish.

Thali – with the thali, I had the unauthentic butter chicken which was more creamy and sweet and the lamb curry which was nice and rich. There were only a couple pieces of meat in each portion.

Service was friendly and professional, taking the time to explain the menu.

I like the design of the restaurant, a little bit funky featuring warm colours.

Conveniently located in the heart of the cbd , Daughter in Law is a perfect spot for a quick weekend lunch. For lunch they serve Thalia’s you get to choose between Veg or non-veg Thali it got them all in one Thali. Quick service and really friendly staff. They explain to you about each item on the Thali. I have tried both the Thalia’s and my personal favourite is the vegetarian one. Absolutely love their palak paneer.
Beautiful interiors and very well organised seating. I suggest booking a table as it gets pretty packed during lunch time.

Enjoyed coconut prawn curry and butter chicken, naan bread and curry chips. For dessert had the chocolate Ice cream with cashew milk. Food was very tasty and service was super quick. Background music was 80s and fabulous. Love the interior decor too however cold wind comes in from front door when customers arrive or leave, so try and get a table away from entrance.

This was my second visit to Daughter in Law - while that itself speaks volumes of my rating to an Indian restaurant in Melbourne, that otherwise are a disappointing and incompetent to say the least, Daughter in Law is a breath of fresh air.

I held off writing my review for the first visit because I was encouraged to visit again.

First visit:
We, a party of 3 with the 4th to join later just landed there without reservation, the reply was, sorry we are running full capacity and can't accept guest without reservation - seeing my face, the host was quick to suggest that we were welcome to occupy bar seats if we'd like and they don't mind serving us food there.
- browny points there to show willingness to accommodate.
Food was gorgeous, in terms of presentation and taste. I'll talk about it in a bit.

Second visit:
- this time I made reservation for 2 a week in advance.
A night before the dinner date I called them at 10pm to ask if I can add 2 more to reservation and make it 4 for the same time, I was prepared to expect a no. But was pleasantly surprised to hear "all done! See you 4 at 6tomorrow"

Now that's not all.

Hosting and professionalism: 5
Cleanliness: all seats were vacum cleaned before accepting new patrons. 5
Spaciousness: Space is so optimally for seating that there isn't enough space to get up without almost pushing another table. 4
Food: DELICIOUS! it is not a let down, and to an extent reminded me of mothers food back home. 5

And they're on zomato gold - icing on the cake!

My partner and I visited on Tuesday night to celebrate his birthday, we had an incredible experience!

The service was fantastic; our waiter went above and beyond to make sure my partner was celebrating his birthday in style. We received two complimentary glasses of sparkling AND complimentary dessert! The waiter organised for all the staff to sing happy birthday while he brought out the dessert with candles and a special hat. The head chef/owner came out to wish my partner a happy birthday too! Fantastic service.

We ordered balls of happiness, butter chicken, blue cheese pizza and a side of basmati rice.  The balls of happiness were fun and very tasty! The waiter recommended to eat them whole.. very nice surprise! My partner loves butter chicken and was incredibly happy.

The music, décor and atmosphere was very funky. We will be back soon! Thanks Daughter-in-Law!

This place is just INCREDIBLE!!! Right down from the ambience, to the hospitality, service, hygiene, food and Jessi Singh himself! Highly recommend starting off with the feed me menu before you try other dishes. It’s so hard to decide what I loved most. But the feed me menu left me in a food coma (for all the right reasons)! The cardamom kulfi MUST be sold in stores. It’s THAT good. 🙌🏻👌🏻

Had an incredible experience at this new (to Melbourne) concept. The upscale Indian eatery offers contemporary dishes that don't stray too far from the familar but provide enough of an edge to satisfy those seeking something novel. One particularly cool dish was the balls of happiness, presented by the chef himself, who urged us to down the whole thing in one bite. It's advised to listen, as this is the best way to get the full experience of the crispy shell and it's sweet and sour inner filling of fruit and yoghurt.

Speaking of yoghurt, I can't recommend the hung yoghurt croquettes enough. Their tart and creamy with a crisp exterior, perfectly complemented by a bed of pureed beetroot. They offer a back of the throat spice that doesn't overwhelm the flavour of the dish.

I knew I had to get a curry but was stuck on what to order, opting for the veg in a turmeric coconut cream (as a less lactose-heavy alternative to the kale fritters in turmeric yoghurt). It was much more expensive than the other curries (for an unknown reason), but extremely satisfying, with a hint of mustard and a lot of veggies. I ordered rice to accompany, which turned out to be a heaping amount.

If you're up for a drink, the venue has a self service fridge of craft beers and an assortment of natural wines. Most are by the bottle and some are by the glass.

As for the space itself, it's fit out really nicely with a combo of modern and vintage influence, baby pink and emerald, projections of 70s Indian films, cocktail trolleys and art deco light fixtures. The staff are extremely attentive (if not overly so) although my main did take a while to come out. But I can excuse that because my dining experience was overall stellar.

Watch out because 'Daughter in Law' is in town. A funky fusion indian place which is so well styled with a culture mish mash! The place is hustle and bustle and the staff are great! I needed to try this place out. Really was a enjoyable night with cocktails and some great fusion dishes. The mussels and Naan break pizza a highlight. Can't wait to go back to try the Thali next time. **Disclaimer: although the restaurant has generously invited me to their restaurant this review is still based on my genuine opinion.

Wow this place was great value! While eagerly awaiting the reopening of chilli India, I haven’t been able to find a reliable Indian lunch until now. For $15 you get a thali with chicken, lamb, Dahl, veggie, rice and pappadum. For an extra $3.50 you Cana did a garlic naan which I would place in the top tier naan category. Mild flavours, but great price, nice decor and will def be back.

We visited Daughter in Law with friends tonight a really impressive space aesthetically though the Dj was a little loud. I waited about 20 minutes for my late dining companions during which time I was largely ignored, someone did advise they would bring water when I originally sat down but it didn’t eventuate until follow up which was disappointing.

I found the food enjoyable though the Indians on our table were more critical. It’s not the cheapest menu but I saw the value given the atmosphere. It’s kind of akin to the modern fusion style Asian restaurants that attract Melbourne’s semi pretentious youth like Tokyo Tina or Chin Chin in the Indian incarnation. For me though I personally wouldn’t have chosen the two entrees we had I really liked both the gol gappa and the scallop cheviche so I’m glad we tried them.

We also had the tandoori chicken, butter chicken, coconut prawn curry and the tandoori chicken naan pizza as well as a veggie curry which isn’t listed on the Zomato menu. This was plenty of food for the four of us and perfect when paired with some deliciously made Indian inspired cocktails. There was heat in the coconut curry and it was probably my favourite equally tied with the butter chicken. I definitely recommend getting the tandoori chicken too. A well thought out menu overall and I have a feeling it’s going to be very popular

The Thali lunch set is great! I loved the flavours of the butter chicken, lamb shank curry and the dhal. The rice was not very aromatic though and the naan was a bit dense. The naan is definitely not as fluffy as that served at Delhi Streets. I love a bit of rice and a bit of naan with my curries. A whole serve of naan was too much - maybe include half a serve of naan as part of the Thali without the additional $2.50 charge, and reduce the serve of rice? The pappadum was excellent, but maybe place as the last item on the plate so that it doesn’t lose the crispiness? Service was top notch. Can’t wait to return the vast dinner menu!

Visited this new kid on the block for the unusual combination of indian flavours. Who could have thought of a blue cheese naan pizza really?!

Let's start with everything we loved about DIL:

- Yogurt Croquettes are highly recommended.
- Good customer service and fabulous ambience.
- Cocktails infused with spices were interesting but not the best.
- The Pani Puris (Balls of happiness) were out of this world (took us back to India).
-The paneer pizza has some lip smacking flavours.
- The ice cream was yum!
- The menu was extremely fab for non-vegetarians.

Leta talk about what didn't work out for us:

- The naan pizzas were quite chewy. Every bite made me taste wet dough.
- The cocktails were unusual but it had confusing flavours.
- The team is quite lost with what they could suggest.

Overall it's a unique concept and stands true to what they claim "Unauthentic Indian Food". The fusion could be a hit and a miss but some dishes are bang on with flavours.

Suggestions:

- More vegetarian options in the mains would be great.
- Fusion in desserts is what I was looking forward to but exploring that could be a hit :)

My housemate is really good at finding amazing dinner places and this was probably one of her best picks. Let’s start with the ambience. We walk in, we are greeted politely, shown to our table and the first thing that catches my eye was that Mughal e Azam was being screened (Projector on a huge wall) and foot tapping Bollywood tracks being played throughout the restaurant. Amazing lighting along with very comfortable seating so that helped.

Coming to the food, I cannot -simply cannot- tell you how much it was a joy train. Starting from the Gol Gappe, Yoghurt Croquettes and even the cocktails- everything was delightful, lip smacking and you cannot help but order a second round of Gol Gappe (Balls of Happiness).

For the mains, we ordered two Naan pizzas. I will admit that the Masala Paneer Naan pizza was probably better than the Blue Cheese and Herb one but it was truly a first in exploring some crazy fusion food. To top it off was the amazing pistachio, honey and cardamom kulfi. I’m definitely coming back to this place again.

Check this place out for the entrees, desi-flavoured cocktails and for the fantastic ambience.

My only beef with them: There’s only one dessert option and I really really hope that they add more soon.

Ordered their Thali lunch today $15 in a nice Indian restaurant with comfortable seating was #worthit!

There are pescatarian and meat options and I am sure if you ask they have a veggie option too.

The meat option includes several curries (butter chicken, lamb curry, salmon curry and lentil dahl), yoghurt and rice. We added naan bread to our meals to mop up the sauces and it was so delish.

However being a new restaurant there are a few things that needs improvement. Food-wise it took sooooo long to come out. We were one of two tables to dine there at the time and food took ages.

The lamb curry can be cooked longer as the meat wasn’t melt in your mouth. The sauce was incredible though.

Thirdly they gave us the smallest table for three people! Thalis comes in this huge round tray, they should have given us a bigger table. Thank goodness the very charmistic owner (?) came out to give help us push two tables together. Normally I do judge harshly with these issues (esp when I am Hangry), but given that they are on their day three and their food is really good I will be nice 😛

Such a great restaurant. It's a remix of Indian meets fine dining. The food is just par excellence. The presentation is a visual delight to the eyes and the ambience of the place is just beautiful. I had the tasting platter which included a mix of everything and would easily fill a person. It's a wonderful place for those who love Indian food but with the essence of fine dining. A strong recommendation.

Came here for the office Christmas lunch which had a fixed menu. The food was very nice I’d have to say. There was plenty of flair, flavour and variety and more than enough food for everyone. The staff tried very hard in testing circumstances. The decor is quirky and quite attractive in an unusual way. Overall price was pretty good, I thought. I’d happily come here again anytime.

Love the pink vibe and everywhere has something appealing to the eye. Balls of happiness was the start of the night!! With no doubt, it’s a must!! We enjoy ourselves and had a great time.
