The pasta at DOC was delicious, especially the gnocchi. The bread that comes with each dish is great for cleaning up the leftover sauce. The service was very friendly and efficient, and took care to let us share easily. We sat outside as the weather was nice and the heat lamps were very warm (probably unnecessary during the early evening but definitely appreciated as the night went on). The table was a little small for sharing though.
Great atmosphere & amazing food. I ordered the black linguini & I was impressed. The bread on the other hand was just alright, wasn’t too impressed with it. But the pasta was absolute amazing. We also ordered the mix olives, and they were great too. It’s good to munch on a little olives before the pasta arrives. Tho I should mention, if you’re not a huge fan of seafood, black linguini wouldn’t be a good option for you.

On one of the busiest eating streets in Melbourne, DOC Espresso serves up delicious Italian food. Lygon Street is famous for its Italian eateries, and DOC easily keeps up with the rest. This place is always packed, proving it's popularity.
We recently dined in on a rainy weekend night. We were seated outside, as it was extremely busy; but it wasn't a problem as there was plenty of protection, and outdoor heaters nearby. In fact, the soft rain added to the lovely atmosphere.
Service was impeccable and attentive, with our drinks being topped up regularly. We couldn't resist their famous pasta, which was so good. The mushroom ravioli was divine, and the pork rigatoni special was also amazing. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and both sauces were full of flavour. We also had a delicious farro salad with a squid ink tuille and the textures of this were sublime.
There is very good reason why DOC is so popular. With it's Italian flavours and lovely staff, this venue has a cosy atmosphere that just makes you feel so welcome.
Lovely selection of pasta and each dish we ordered tasted delicious! Service was friendly and efficient. My favourite dish was the gnocchi which was soft and pillowy and paired beautifully with the onion cream sauce and mushrooms.
Fantastic service—I was seated and looked after within minutes. The pappardelle were cooked al dente just how I like it. The porcini mushrooms were bursting with flavour and paired beautifully with the Pinot Grigio. Thank you for a lovely dinner.
Cozy place with some comfy food, the pasta was great, been here few time, they change their menu regularly, also lots of drinks can choose from, the service was lovely.
Amazing service. Food came out quick. Best pasta ive eaten. The pappardelle was to die for. The truffle mushrooms were cooked really well. So much flavour. The carbonara pasta was also really good.

Ordered the lasagne and a carbonara-type pasta (forgot the name)! Both came timely and had huge serving size!
The lasagne was excellent- super cheesy, meaty and flavourful! I enjoyed every bite. Appreciate that they have a child's size for this!
The other pasta was unfortunately a let-down. The pork smell was too strong for me and to be frank was quite difficult to eat.
I would return to try their other pastas and foccaccias!
We came on a busy Friday night. We ordered the mushroom fettetucine and pasta special. Both were amazing, delicious. The pasta is freshly made, authentic and a class above typical pasta you'd get from a standard restaurant.

On a random Sunday evening, my friend and I ended up in Carlton. I had not been in Carlton for such a long time and my friend suggested we go to DOC Expresso for some yummy pasta! It's my first time to DOC Expresso and according to my friend it is the sister restaurant to the famous DOC Pizzeria which is just around the corner.

DOC Expresso is smack bang on busy Lygon Street between Faraday St and University St. Great location but as one would know, difficult to find car parking, we circled around for quite some time before we found a park. From the outside the restaurant looks small, however its a very good size, very great atmosphere and they have outdoor seating at the back with about 6-7 tables.

As soon as we walked in, we were greated with friendly smile and warm hospitality. The guy was very apologetic that there were no tables available (and we were a walk-in). We were told it could be about 15-30 minute wait and we pondered for it for a few seconds and said we'd be happy to wait. Suddenly within 5 minutes, a waitress ushered us in further and said a table will be available in few minutes but its outside, we were fine with that as they had those free-standing heaters. Opps!I totally forgot what special pasta I ordered, but it was delicious! The pasta was so fresh, and the seafood was very tender.
I tried a bit of my friend's Black Linguine and Oh My gosh, it was soo tasty!! What a treat! I am so thankful for my friend's suggestion to come here for dinner.We couldnt leave without having dessert! My panna cotta was perfect, had a good wobble and the slightly toasted pears were a good match. My friend enjoyed her Tiramisu soo much she almost ordered a second one!
Our tummy was very full and satisfied.
The restaurant had great atmosphere, excellent customer service and delicious pasta and dessert. Highly recommended!

The authentic Italian cafe and bistro experience. Not surprising since most, if not all of the staff are imported! A pretty excellent lasagne - way out of an Italian mum's league (unless your mum was a chef, of course). Atmosphere was nice, service and speed was good.
Good pasta joint on Lygon! Food is fresh and flavorful. I ordered the spaghetti al pomodoro and it was really tasty! I also tried the black linguine which is probably the tastiest out of the two. I also tried the pasta of the day (seemed to be like a tripe pappardelle?). The pasta of the day was magnificent and it would be amazing if it was on the menu permanently. Unfortunately, service was a bit abrupt and cold.

There are times when all the planets align and you find yourself in carbonara heaven. Today, DOC’s too me back to last year in Rome dining on all my favourite Italian food. This afternoon, it was better than Rome. To benchmark the quality of any place purporting to be Italian, I have to order the carbonara. At DOC’s it was spagheto quadrato - molisana with carbonara, guanciale, egg yoke and pecorino romano. And just because I can, I asked for a side of buffalo mozzarella. This also came with a piece of fresh white crusty bread and the obligatory bottle of water.
Surrounded by the musical Italian accents of the waiters and chefs, I hesitantly tried my dish. Bella! Bella! Thank you everyone.
DOC’s was doing a roaring trade in this cold winter day. Even the seats outside were full of diners, waiters buzzing inside and out with green bottles of water and plates of appetising food.
Price wasn’t cheap and here is the lesson - you get what you pay for. Plus the bonus of Lygon Street spirit and character.
Notes: recommend you make a booking for those busy periods of Friday and Saturday night as it does get busy, suitable for vegetarians, restaurant is wheelchair friendly, kid friendly, takeaway available and the parking is reasonable if you’re patient.
I love DOC espresso. It’s simple but fast, good, flavourful and authentic italian dining. The service is efficient - they were able to accomodate for a booking of 6 people with no reservations on a cold thursday night. The pasta is always always al dente and you can tell it’s been freshly made. The wait for your order is maybe 15 minutes and they all come out at the exact time. No waiting, regardless of how many people there are or what dish you’ve ordered. The lasagne is creamy and hearty, the truffle pappardelle has a subtle flavour to it and the calamarata is saucy. Use the piece of bread they give you to wipe up the leftover sauce! If you’re unsure of where to go from all the options on Lygon St, DOC is always the way to go.

🍴Usually known for their Italian pizzas and pastas but the desserts here are high quality goodness. Although a bit pricey, the #tiramisu is one of the best I’ve tried. Instead of the usual mascarpone cheese, goat cheese is used to give it a slightly richer flavour. It’s a perfect balance of sponge, pavaseni biscuits, coffee and cocoa and won our hearts with just one bite. Sadly, they were only left with 2 of these popular desserts by the time we went at 7pm on a weekend. Thus, we were also recommended the #lemoncustard that was an interesting and delicious mix of lemon, biscuits and peanuts. It was not sour as expected and a surprisingly substantial and heavy portion so would recommend sharing it!

They recently changed their menu that I just uploaded.There are 2 Docs one offers pasta on their menu and the other one offers pizza; both restaurants are close to each other(7min walking distance).
I have been here more than 7 times and I must say something, the food was amazing but today it’s a bit disappointing... they have most probably changed ingredients because I can tell the difference in quality(it decreased). I do love this place, but maybe it’s changing to generate more profit,I hope that this is not the case because I honestly liked this place :(
I would recommend trying Lasagna- Traditional w/ Bolognese, bechamel!
DOC Espresso is a bustling and busy restaurant! We loved the pasta and how well it was cooked - the must have is definitely the spaghetti with tomato and basil and the squid ink spaghetti
Not that Doc needs my review but since I’ve left some pretty harsh reviews for a lot of places on Lygon street, here’s finally a good one. Cozy little Italian place with beautiful atmosphere. Well deserved 4 stars rating, however, given the hype I was expecting a little more. The Fussilli lacked flavor as the sauce was simply too thin and I felt like I could have made it better at home. Overall good dining experience and great house wine, the pasta isn’t the best I’ve ever had but definitely good. Would return as I like the venue and the food is good, just not what i expected.
It’s a place with great and joyful ambience. The coffe flavour was surprising, like if it was directly created with the milk itself, i couldn’t separate flavours of it. There was so much consistency of the flavour on every sip that I was happily surprised. The avocado bruschetta was filling for a great morning start.
The food is so fresh, so italian, the staff is very friendly and the service is very fast i realy enjoy this place mornings, afternoons or evenings

Being big fans of DOC Pizza & Mozzarella Bar it was only a matter of time we came to DOC Espresso for a pasta fix. The restaurant was chaotic but we did eventually score a few seats. After placing the order it did take awhile for the wine to come out and when the food did arrive, it came all at once. Not ideal as we wanted to pick at our salumi e fromaggi misti before the pasta came (but hey it's good for the top/down shot).
The board consisted of various cured meats, that of which was generous and predictably delicious for that salty fat fix. There were a couple other hard cheeses and mozzarella, fresh and still milky.
Of the 3 pastas they were all cooked perfectly and maintained great bite with it being underdone. The beef cheek ragu on the fusilli really clung on, the meat was really soft after being slow cooked and just became one with the pasta. Their mezzi rigatoni cacio e pepe was the most al dente, I wouldn't call it a real cacio e pepe but an adaption with the addition of pancetta and artichoke. That being said I really wish that it was more salty and peppery, more intense. Despite that it was still my favourite pasta served that night. The pappardelle were fine sheets of pasta and you'd find satisfaction biting down on these babies. The porcini mushrooms and truffle oil made it very luscious and meaty.
Not to be overshadowed by the great salumi and pasta but the rucola salad was fantastic. It consisted of rocket, pear, honey and pecorino cheese. Bitter, peppery, sweet, this is one way to get me to eat my salad.
For dessert we got DOC's sweet goat's cheese tiramisu, that of which can be found at their other restaurant. It was some smooth tiramisu, light and fluffy with the espresso sponge coming through. The passion fruit panna cotta was today's flavour and was great on its own, slightly tart and sweet. It came paired with some dark chocolate mousse, you can choose to eat them together which surprisingly ain't too bad but they stand alone just fine.
It took a little longer than usual getting a table as we had to wait for a dedicated staff member to show us to our table. The pacing of the food could be improved on rather than it all being brought out at once. Solid Italian food, I feel like they've struck a nice balance on the ingredients used in their food and have not overcomplicated their dishes.

Came here for pasta as I love the doc pizza store
The pasta is very al dente and were very simple but tasty . Parpadelle is always a must for me , and they do it well. Also ordered the house special which was a spiral pasta shape I had never tried before. Really enjoyed everything we had here , service is a tad slow I must admit , food is also slow
The thing that I I love about DOC Espresso is the authenticity. After you have ordered, you are given a paddle of antipasti of breads with toppings & fava beans, transporting you to a bar in Italy, drinking an aperitif. I would come here every single day just for the Pappardelle (porchini mushroom pasta). Add some ricotta to the dish and you’re in heaven. With a piece of fresh crispy bread served with the pasta (I grew up cleaning my pasta bowl with bread after my meal). Olive oil sits on the table as well to drizzle on your bread if you prefer. Great wine menu selection and imported beers that you don’t find everywhere else

My favourite pasta joint. I always order their pappardelle truffled porcini mushroom and spaghetti pomodoro. It's super al dente and they give generous amount of shaved parmesan cheese.
Coffee and food are really good.very traditional Italian food. Friend recommend, we tried few food but all very yum. I love to return and try different things next time.
Classy place that serves up a pretty cheap bowl of pasta really. Can’t complain about anything you get here. Menu is small though and the staff can be a bit abrupt.

Everything here was delish. The cured meat and cheese platter we got as an entree was super tasty. The pasta though，that was the highlight. We got the pappardelle and tortellini，and everything was cooked to perfection. Can't wait to return， and very highly recommended.
Creatively tasty pasta. The black paccheri pasta was a weird texture with the mashed peas but the prawn ragu was so rich in flavour, the whole dish grew on me. Pappadelle with porcini mushroom and lasagna were equally amazing and a hit with the kids. Always a bonus.

I really love this place! The best office ever in Melbourne! I went there to buy coffee last year on my competition day, and this year I come back again to buy coffee. The staff is friendly even tho they are super busy. I bought one latte for myself, and three large strong latte for my coaches, they all love it!
Back again on a cold morning and we are happy to sit outside under the warm heaters (that actually work well). The service is the usual, efficent and with a little attitude but that's expected so all good. The coffee is exceptional here, always. I had a great toastie with home made Mayo, the paella was great and light but the stand out was the pollenta with muselli, it looked great and had some real flavours. All this with a great vantage point to watch ask the people walk by... No better way to waste an hour or so!
One of the best places on Lygon to grab a coffee and soak up the atmosphere, if you are in at breakfast grab the egg and pancetta panino, they are sensational!
At a 'Cafe strip' on Lygon Street at the corner of University Street there is a small, maybe slightly cramped cafe serving good quality coffee.
A strong latte, latte, cappuccino and hot chocolate - 3 of 4 items were above average. In espresso milk-based drinks the quality of shot tastes very fresh- admittedly, it is easy to achieve in cafes with a high turnover of their coffee blends. The milk in each drink was relatively smooth, and well stretched. There were, however slightly uneven amounts of foamy milk on top each of the drinks.
The hot chocolate was less impressive. Probably not a go to here, it was quite weak- surprising, given how many orders of it there were in a busy Cafe.
Still though, for regular coffee not bad.
For a restaurant situated in Lygon Street, which is notoriously bad for authentic and soul satisfying Italian food (don't be fooled tourists!); DOC Espresso is one of those rare gems that actually hits an incredible mark. Not to be confused with the DOC in Albert Park, which specialises in pizza (also amazing); DOC Espresso specialises in delicious pasta dishes. I have repeat visited DOC Espresso, and tried the trecce, carbonara, black linguine, pesto, and ragu pasta varieties. All absolutely exceptional, sans the pesto, which was decidedly not my first choice (personal preference). All pasta is served with a chunk of fresh sourdough bread, and goes down well with a glass of house white or red (which also comes with complimentary appetizer/finger food!) Salumi board is strongly recommended - amazing buffalo mozzarella and San Danielle prosciutto that is so especially delicate. What a great meal, you can't go wrong!
We had a great experience at DOC. It was suprisingly busy and full of atmosphere midweek but we were lucky enough to get a seat at the bar straight away. The staff were charming, friendly and made effort to make conversation with us throughout the night. The lasange was massive but delicious. It is a huge portion and it will definitely fill you up. The cheese was great throughout the layers. I would also recommend the black squid ink pasta dish. It was of flavour and the fish cooked perfectly (really soft and also packed with flavour). The pasta was cooked perfectly and it was easy to finish (a much lighter dish)- just wished there was more! Also, their complimentary chilli oil is full of kick and very nice addition to any dish.
We tend to avoid Lygon St, even though it's within walking distance. But on this occasion we had 45mins until the movie started and rumbling bellies. Asked the waiter what would come quick and was told pasta. Good choice. The black Linguine and Gnocchi were both good valve. A fairly large range of wines and beer too.
Well, I have to say they served very nice coffee to us on Saturday afternoon. Ordered a latte, cappuccino and hot chocolate and they were all fantastic. I love latte over the cappuccino because I don't really like the froth on top. But the one I had from this cafe was superb. Good ratio of froth, and the coffee was very smooth. I should have ordered it in a mug!

A really nice simple menu, with changing specials. This place keeps it simple and serves up delicious fresh Italian food paired with nice wines. The Lasagne is a stand out for me.
Like its older cousin (just around the corner) serving very delicious pizzas, this DOC focuses on serving really nice pasta (and other casual Italian dishes). I'm usually not a fan of this area of Lygon Street as I find it is full of tourist traps dishing out un-authentic "Italian" food smothered in cream and garlic. Luckily, DOC is NOT one of those places. They make very good use of their salumi shop and incorporate lots of delicious cold cured meats into their antipasti plates, and use very good ingredients on their pasta selections. Venue is OK though it's a bit more "modern" so it lacks a bit of the character that their Pizza venue around the corner has. Service is friendly. Recommended.
I am not big fan of pizza. So? I don’t get why this place is sooo busy always. I ordered two pizza one margarita and broccoli one. I understand it is authentic taste of Italy. But for me? For Asian back ground? It is very sensitive taste. I need more strong sauce!!

I came here with a group recently and had a really lovely pizza dinner. Since there were a few of us we were able to share a few different pizzas. All the toppings were excellent there were plenty of different types to choose from. The prosciutto was my favourite of the night. The staff were friendly and very efficient. I will definitely be coming back here soon!
Really good pasta that is hand made and tasty. This is one of the better pasta and pizza restaurants on Lygon street and is always packed. Services is pretty bad though.

DOC Espresso is easily one of the busiest restaurants on Lygon street, and rightly so!
Firstly, the food is reasonably priced. The serves are massive and the meals are very filling. I was starving when I ordered my food but was still struggling to finish it.
The service is very quick and the staff are delightful.
Everytime we come here it’s never disappoints. The simple fresh flavours and well thought out dishes are amazing. The closest I have found to proper Italian pasta. Well done.
I love D.O.C espresso. Hands down best pasta in Melbourne, I love their pomodoro pasta & their traditional Italian cocktails.
I was however quite disappointed with the buffalo mozzarella, this was quite a treat for me as I don’t really eat cheese. The mozzarella was almost frozen in the centre & flavourless due to the overly cold temperature of the cheese.

Zucchini piadina was so gooood. So filling and tastes amazing. Putting simple ingredients together and accentuating them just makes the best dish. YUM YUM YUM 👌👌
Pappardelle was a let down. I had high hopes. 😢😢 It is hand made but I don't think it's cooked al dante, was still a little raw to me. haha. Flavour was bland and too oily. Totally not up to my game. Maybe chef wasn't in good mood today? haha 😂😂

I have been to the DOC pizza place many of times & always had a great experience! This place has a very different atmosphere but the food was just as authentic & delish! I wasn’t hungry so I just had a porchetta roll from the deli next door but my friend really enjoyed the mushroom pasta!
Prosciutto, formaggio e spritz tutta la vita! Everything here at DOC espresso is delicious, from aperitivo, to mains and dessert. Most of the staff is friendly, attentive and welcoming. Love going there for a coffee in the morning or an aperitivo during the week.
My favourite place to go for lasagna and an Italian hot chocolate! It's the only place that I know of that serves thick gelatinous Italian hot chocolate which tastes a little like YoGo chocolate.
The best thing about this restaurant is the service, which is always amazingly fast given how popular they are. Pastas are fresh with a changing menu. The most interesting dishes of any local pasta place, in my opinion. And the Lurisia No. 8 beer is to die for.
There's nothing I love better than a chacuterie and cheese plate for starters and a good, old school spag bol with a slice of bread with olive oil for main. This place does it so well. Chacuterie and cheese from the deli next door was delicious and the spag bol was comforting and generous in portion.
Highly recommend. Went for lunch and got spoilt with a delicious antipasto as a starter and lasagna to finish. YUM. Sit outside and watch the world go by in summer. There is always something interesting happening on Lygon
I loved my meal (penne Di farro) here at DOC espresso. It cost $20 or so. My companion had the special of the day which was a $26 pasta and enjoyed his meal less- thinking it overpriced for the three meatballs the dish contained. Service was quick and efficient though impersonal. Had to ask several times where our beers were but when they arrived they were delicious. Decor is nice, and it's a very busy restaurant, which means there's noise and it might mean you have to share a table.
Top tier pasta and a pleasant environment. They cook their pasta 'al dente' which means that it's still rather chewy. Most italian restaurants around Australia have rather soft pasta, so it was great to have something different. DOC might not appeal to people who are used to soft pasta but I like both so i greatly enjoyed both pastas I had, which was the pappardelle and the squid ink pasta.

The food is very nice and the prices for lunch are extremely reasonable. $20-24 for pasta is definitely not excessive that is for sure. The only downside is there is no table service during lunch as opposed to dinner. For the quality of the ingredients been used the price is extremely reasonable. You can see the the chefs cutting the prosciutto and dicing the tomatoes for the pasta. Can't get more authentic and fresh then that!
For dinner the menu is more extensive but the prices increase moderately for some items which is understandable.
The restaurant and next door deli are beautifully decorated inside and out. If it's summer you can sit on the back porch and it gives you a cool feeling.
Only downside is the service found that waiters are difficult to get their attention sometimes and can be a language barrier. They also come across as rude sometimes!

Tried their carbonara spaghetti. Really delicious. Worth the try. Salami board is nice too. But beware of their coffee, a bit unfortunate that they used expired milk, as both of my friends caught diarrhoea after. I didn't drink so I was ok.
Ordered a Pappardelle pasta, can't fault it, very satisfied. Pasta cooked al dente, mushrooms very fresh and flavoursome. Husband ordered pasta of the day which was pasta with salmon and broccoli, was good too, but I definitely preferred mine. Most of the staffs are nice and friendly. However, a waitress was a bit rude, she moved the chair next to my husband, hit his knee hard without apologising. But I will definitely come back for the beautiful food. Also, in the Deli, they sell Joselito Jamon. The best ham of the best, all the way from Spain, which is very exciting for me.
Pretty solid Italian food and for a fair price. The chicken carbonara was really good and patrons were so disappointed when it wasn't listed as a special that it's now listed as a mainstay on the menu. The cured meats and cheese board was a nice starter and generous portion as well. Other featured items in the photos below are the spinaci salad and the black squid tagliatelle. Everyone that works here speaks Italian, so I guess it's also authentic in that regard.

Like the other reviews food is great here. Pasta is fresh and very well cooked. Recommend the pappardelle and the tiramisu for dessert. Delicious! Also my experience with the waitresses was great, unlike some of the negative reviews about the wait staff I see here. Attentive and friendly, no complaints! Worth checking out for sure if you’re craving pasta on Lygon St.
Fresh seasonal pasta dishes. The menu changes fairly frequently, so be prepared to have a change every so often. The pasta is always fresh and perfectly cooked, with both complex and more simple ingredients on offer, for personal taste. The wine menu is excellent, with a range of bottles to suit the dishes. The service is a always excellent.
Interesting pasta combinations! Zucchini cream with crab and porcini pasta. Both were amazing! Just staff was not so friendly? Didn’t look at us when they were serving us and when we order. And also look annoyed cos of that time was busy? But except that all good!
My favourite Italian restaurant when I crave for pasta! I particularly love their spaghetti pomodoro and lasagna.
They serve super good breakfast too, I highly recommend trying their ricotta with fruits toast and tuna scrambled eggs focaccia bread. So so good!

A great menu of lovely lunch dishes with a changing superb daily pasta. Could have more local wines, rather than inflicting the carbon footprint of importing wines from Europe. But still lovely food, wine and service. We currently only eat outside and this is well catered for here.
A slice of Italy in the heart of Carlton. Friendly staff, excellent pasta and a great wine list. Food tastes awesome and really served in a traditional Italian way! Highly recommended but be aware that it's a really busy place due to the top quality of food served.
