An absolutely wonderful space with a terrific stone floor and dimly lit surrounds. The service was wonderful and although I just had the soup, it was so delicious I had to write a review of it. Thank you for the recommendation from the ladies at the 'French Fix' to seek this wonderful place out. I will be back.
Ever had what is ostensibly a pasta, on a pizza? Sure, maybe you’ve had meatballs on a pizza, or other pasta-based ingredients – but what about a carbonara pizza? Well this what struck the eye of The Dear Luncher when he sat his portly frame down on a rickety chair upstairs in the authentic and genuine surrounds @ Michelangelo Osteria. A carbonara pizza. Pizzas at Michelangelo’s are made in the Roman style. The Dear Luncher was intrigued by this. What’s the difference between Roman and the rest of Italy? Well, it has a particular preparation mode and apparently there’s a bit of sugar in there as well. It was not circular, and arrived on a cutting board. It was beautifully crisscrossed when it came to the slices. Pancetta, pecorino, egg yolk and black pepper graced this pizza … all on top of a superb base. This was a joy to eat. An instant favourite for The Dear Luncher. The pancetta was just like The Old Luncher used to make and slice up in the garage. The egg yolk, smattered all over but not overpowering. It combined superbly with the pecorino.
Mamma mia 👄👌
For the drinking: Genuine Italian Peroni always tastes better than the one they mass-produce in Australia, it is a damn fine lager when it’s ice cold.
4.5/5.
What lovely home made pasta with excellent service! You almost felt like you are in the hustle bustle of Roma eating Nona’s pasta.Surely will be back for more.Just in a food coma after lunch! Simply delicious
A visit to Italy this year was brought back by a meal here. There were 4 people working, 2 younger girls tending to customers, a chef and an older last who appeared to be the owner. Water and complimentary freshly baked foccacia were provided shortly after the menu was given. The downstairs part of the restaurant has roughly 5 or so small tables as well as a bench along the wall for another 5 patrons. The staff coveresing in Italian, alongside a simple menu which is avaliable on their website made for a very pleasing lunch. Staff seemed to have developed a good relationship with customers as evidenced by a customer asking a whatever glass of wine the waitress recommended. Would chose this place over A25 which is within the same area, +39 pizzeria still to be tried for comparisons to be made.
Great little Italian restaurant in the CBD. Michelangelo offers a everything, from traditional Italian breakfast to lunch and pizza. Love the traditional regional dinner they offer.
Great food, great service. Feels like you have been invited into a friends home. Food is delicious and perfect for winter. Gluten free pizza base is awesome. Good wine menu. A gem in the city. Do yourself a favour and get there stat.
Great food and great environment. The Italian aperitivo is lots of fun and gives you the opportunity to try some great Italian food, which is a delight for both locals and expats!
A friend and I popped in here prior to a training workshop a couple of doors down and were attracted to its old world and very Italian feel! The chef appeared to be cooking trays of donuts and bread, as well as cooking up breakfast dishes for patrons. In view of this we ordered the mini rolls (which were still cooling out of the oven) which were delicious (I had the caprese and my friend had one with Italian meat in it) as well as coffees. The service was lovely and the atmosphere was nice, although it seemed to be a location for lots of older corporate men to gather. I would definitely want to come back to try more than just a breakfast roll and coffee.
Awesome little Italian cafe. So nice to sit in a cafe and listen to people talk Italian. It's like being on holidays. Great coffee and service. I rarely find myself in this part of the city - so don't get here often. But when I do I will be getting my coffee here!! Pastries and breakfast Menu looks good too.
Kat Spatula Spoon And Saturday
+4.5
It’s a typical nice, warm coloured and relaxing Melbourne cafe really. The Saturday breakfast menu consisted of the usual breakfast menu typical of the better Melbourne cafes. KJ, being a fussy girl that she is, had asked if they could do a salad (who the
Great pizza. Had porcini mushrooms, delicious tomato sauce, a crispy base and some cheese of course. Sparse toppings as you would expect on an authentic Italian pizza. Top quality ingredients. Also had a pasta dish which was fabulous. The service was great too. Tried a nice chianti which I cant wait to have again. The owner (?) was really helpful and friendly. Overall a great dinner and we cant wait to head back.
Great Find. Wow, I was so happy to find a great unknown pizza place in the CBD. Staff were very attentive, great service, pizza was authentic. Hand tossed dough, minimal high-quality ingredients, and it was quiet on a friday night! Perhaps not the best pizza in the city, but by far the best by a restaurant you don't need to book a table for a week in advance. I highly recommend the Bruschetta pizza! Some friends also hand the homemade pasta and gave it a thumbs up!
Great, real Italian place. Great food proper real Italian coffee and authentic Italian service. Italian service means, if they like you and think you get the food it'll be great service, if they think you're a tosser or just want canned spag vol, expect...
I love they place and the daily specials are absolutely brilliant.
Go, eat and enjoy and be cool about it.
FEEDBACK LUNCH TODAY 21/11. HI
We had a lovely experience with Michelangelo. The booking was easy and prompt. Got a nice outside table. EXCELLENT FRIENDLY ITALIAN SERVICE. Lovely food: presentation, fresh and delicious!. We made our own pasta and also many delicious dishes at home : Michelangelo uses good fresh ingredients and all has a lovely flavour. CAN ONLY RECOMMEND!
Had dinner with some friends here recently and loved it. The pappardelle with duck ragu was my dish and wow. Do yourself a favour and visit this restaurant.
A little piece of Italy. Michelangelo's is a cute Italian trattoria in Queen Street with an authentic atmosphere and discerning clients - it's apparently a local hangout for lots of lawyers who like good food. Bookings essential on Fridays and recommended for any other day.
Timber chairs and checkered tablecloths set the scene. Warm rustic bread and zesty olive oil arrives quickly. The menu has all the classic pastas and pizzas, plus daily specials to die for. Today's homemade fettuccini with pumpkin and ricotta was a very satisfying dish of egg pasta with a subtle velvety sauce. Even better was the hazelnut semifreddo with nut brittle pieces and chocolate sauce.
Service is rapid yet friendly, and the Italian happily flows across the two levels. Keen to come back for one of the themed dinners or wine nights on offer. Mi piace molto!
Getting it right. I also took advantage of a lunch for two voucher and we couldn't have been happier. Excellent antipasto, choice of main and tira mi su. The waitress (owner's wife?) was extremely attentive without being over the top, the meal was brought very quickly and there was a pleasant buzz about the place (Friday lunchtime). Good luck to the new owners who have their finger on the pulse and seem to know what makes a friendly Italian eatery. We'll be back for dinner, at full price, once they extend opening hours.
Best coffee I have had in quite some time. The staff were extremely friendly and the service was great. I had the prociutto focaccia, which exceeded my expectations. The bread was sensational and the ingredients were beautiful and fresh. All in all an authentic taste of Italy that I will definately be returning to experience!
Many repeat visits in store for 2012. Wow, what a wonderfully authentic Italian cafe. Readers of my reviews may have picked up that I generally avoid Italian restaurants as I am not a huge fan of pasta. However, my companion was hungover and in need of carbs. So off we went and we chose the sharing menu, for $17 each you can choose 2 serves of pasta or risotto from the menu (including the specials), garlic bread and salad. The serving size of the pasta is very generous.
We chose a special, being pesto spaghetti with vongole and scallops; and from the menu the gnocchi with a tomato-based sauce and prawns. YUM! Oh it was so good. Truly delicious. The salad was lovely, dressed with a good-quality olive oil, and the garlic bread was relatively light - nicely toasted pieces of a foccacia-style bread which had not drowned in garlic butter.
Although I was totally satisfied with my meal, I was looking enviously at other patrons...the lentil soup was so thick the spoon stood up straight, and the pizzas looked lovely and rustic - nice thin base, simple toppings etc.
Anyway I am so glad I found this place now, it gives me a full year in 2012 to work my way through the menu.
Overall, very good, friendly staff and great food. This was my first meal here, but it won't be the last.
Did I mention the coffee is excellent?. Excellent coffee.
Such a nice staff and delicious food. The cold meat platter is awesome, they have a nice selection of Italian wine and Schnapps and also serve gluten-free gnocchi. Great! We have been a group of nine and were all happy. Would go again.
Best coffee and food 😊 After many years being in the CBD, this place makes you feel like you are overseas. It takes you out of rush in the CBD and reminds you that life is so much bigger! Love it. Thank you to every staff member that had and is still working there. Great service as always. Must visit if you're down at Queen st.
Friendly service, great pastries, and good coffee.
Lockdown Pizza class hosted by Matteo and Iliara last night was great fun and absolutely delicious food and wine. Porketta - divine. Lovely to meet Matteo as he home delivered the food box earlier in the day, then pick up tips on how to make magnificent pizza -tip- 72hour proving time.
Craft beer was delicious and (other) Matteo was so interesting with his beer making knowledge. Congratulations to you all and we cant wait to visit your Osteria when it opens again.
The food was delicious and the wait staff were fantastic. Came for lunch and the food was out quick but well made. The coffee afterwards was perfect. Came back the next day for a coffee and just as good the 2nd time!
Michelangelo's is an Awesome Place.
I had never been there before & was just walking past so dropped in for Breakfast/Coffee & it has (I believe) the best coffee in Melbourne &
I should know cause Im Italian...lol
Breakfast was really yummy & fresh ingredients are used but what it really deserves (if I could give it) is 10 Stars for the service they provide
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
(so I have been back 3 times this week & have never been disappointed).
The young Italian waitress deserves a pay rise as she is absolutely outstanding. She makes everyone feel welcome with her friendly personality & efficient service (which these days it is very hard to find wait staff like her).
The owner also works on the floor & his service also goes above & beyond which is really great to see (plus he speaks english perfectly).
Overall Michelangelo's certainly won't disappoint, it seems like all their customers are regulars, who are welcomed like they are part of the family ... They are greeted by name & coffee orders are remembered & even though it's such a busy place, I have never felt like they are trying to kick me out, to turn the tables over - which is great as I've stayed for over an hour on each occasion.
I've worked in hospitality for over 20 years & its great to see that there are still some places out there that really enjoy serving u & are genuinely happy to be at work.
This place is very authentic making there own pasta, bread and pizza dough. Matteo is passionate about his food. Very warm and friendly service. Open breakfast and lunch and the occasional Friday night. Matteo also does outside catering including Pizza.
