Cute little gem, with very big flavours! Coffee was made to perfection and the Huevos Roto was very delicious and filling. Defs worth a visit.
This place is great! Best coffee in the strip, and the woman who I believe owns it is so lovely! That section of Lygon Street is kind of lacking ambience but small block has a great vibe and it's a really peaceful place to get a casual brunch and hang out.
Absolutely beautiful coffee served here. A magnificent brew. Lots of care taken choosing the beans and making it. There’s evidence pride in the whole process and it really shows. Slightly quirky but sort of endearing service. This is a lovely bright wide former shop with high ceilings. I liked the fit out. Good music on. Had a very good feel about it here. Nice place. I’ll be back for food at some point.
The food here is consistently amazing, staff are super friendly and as quirky as can be! Really recommend the peas and haloumi fritter with a side of hash brown and an iced chai latte 🌞
Every now and then one stumbles across a real find.
Small Block fits this category well.
The food here is awesome and really good value for money.
Very casual and laid back atmosphere with however, probably the most uncomfortable seats imaginable. Not a place to linger longer?
Enjoyed the pea and halloumi fritters with smoked salmon, although I didn't seem to taste any halloumi. Fairly quiet cafe and is reasonably priced! Food 7.5/10 Coffee 6/10
A surprisingly spacious cafe with a courtyard area that’s perfect for brunches in the summer. There’s not of lighting inside Small Block, and with the broody background music the place does feel quite dark despite it being really sunny outside.
We tried the Huevos Rancheros and the Summer’s Breakfast. I really liked the idea of a breakfast tortilla and I was amused by how when it came out, the two tortillas sandwiched a filling of beans and chorizo. The texture of the tortilla itself was pretty good - crisp and still soft. Overall, I guess I would’ve liked a little more flavour in the dish. The salsa could be more punchy in my opinion - perhaps more tomatoes, less cucumber and more lime juice. I’m not sure how exactly to put this but the tortilla doesn’t really taste of anything; a good tortillla has this beautiful savoury taste but this one, although texture-wise it’s great, just didn’t have any flavour.
The Summer’s Breakfast was your usual breakfast fare of eggs, fanned avocadoes, sourdough and hollandaise. The added beetroot added a nice touch of acidity and overall, each element was cooked well (or was good fresh produce).
I’m not sure I would come back to Small Block at this stage with the surplus of zanier brunch menus scattered around Melbourne. But definitely, pop by to this place if you live in the neighbourhood as it is a good place to get your work done - or get some much needed alone time because it’s not too busy.

Super friendly service, warm inside on a cold day with the heaters on. Menu was small-ish but lots of variety. I had the poached eggs on muffins with cheese and chili jam and hubby had the corn fritters which he rated top 3 in Melbourne. The home made hash brown added to both meals wère tasty but would be better half the thickness to make crispier.
Cute cafe. Nice menu.
Affogato, $4.5, cocoa sprinkled on top is a nice touch.
Eftpos minimum $10.

Big plus is the Parklet they have outside their cafe right now (will only be there until mid 2017). An excellent initiative by the local council to reclaim some road to become a community friendly green space, and works wonders for Small Block giving them extra dining room. Great they got in board this.
Great range of breakfasts at a reasonable price (around the 10-15 range unlike the 20-25 found at similar cafes). After a 2 week pilgrimage of Melbourne breakfasts, the staff at Small Block made us feel so welcome (also played & entertained our baby!) that we returned for our last 3 breakfasts before returning to London. A beautiful local that makes everyone welcome!
Great breakfast! Can't wait to go back again. So much variety on the menu. The balsamic mushrooms were so good! Would definitely recommend for breakfast/brunch
Thank you for being my week day morning dose of normality. Coffee is fantastic. Food is fantastic. Service is a little hit and miss on the weekends but easily overlooked due to the fact that the offering is so above par.
I'll be back as often as possible.
Can't fault this place. Coffee is superb, wait staff are friendly, food is fresh and simple. We always get the Summer Breakfast with poached eggs and a side of salmon and it's perfect. Good stuff Small Block!
My go-to breakfast joint - never disappoints. Good service, solid menu with all the "essentials" and awesome coffee (try the macadamia milk!). The pesto scrambled eggs are excellent value at $9.50 for a generous serving 👌
Clyde and I have been coming here since we met and we can't fault it.
Our started order is the eggs Benedict with a side of bacon, chorizo and mushrooms for Clyde and I get the summer breakfast with hollandaise sauce. Our meals are cooked to perfection every time and we are always left feeling overly full and extremely satisfied.
Their coffee is amazing too.
The place is run down, and the furniture old but it works. It gives the place a hipster, homely feel. The staff are super friendly and accommodating.
This will always be our go to place for breakfast and we would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Very impressed with the lunch and coffee here. Had a pea and haloumi fritters stack which was really great. Poached egg on top was perfect. Follows up by a perfect latte.
The perfect brunch spot with reasonable prices, great coffee and friendly service.Sit out on the side is always nice and would recommend the smoked salmon!
Good atmosphere. that Grungy look. Food was great no complaints. The coffee was pretty good too.
The corn fritters were great especially as I am dairy free so that was a great option for me. This place can get busy over weekends but worth the wait. My partner had the healthy option of the summer breakfast and the eggs were done as they loked them.
The sweet corn fritters here are highly addictive, so so good. Yummy coffee and friendly staff. Always quick with service. Lile the little outdoor bit great for people watching.
Cute little cafe that's a little further down Lygon Street, away from all the buzz. The dishes here aren't very creative, but they're typical brunch dishes that are executed well. The ingredients are fresh and of high quality.
Good coffee and great atmosphere. The food is your typical cafe fare but the freshness of the ingredients is apparent. I highly recommend stopping in for a take away coffee at least.
A favourite local, simple, but the ingredients are such good quality. The best fetta in town and the bacon is always cooked just right! Lovely service, feels like you're in someones house.
Summer Breakfast. Absolutely delicious! Such a fresh taste! I absolutely adore the sweetness of the beetroot relish combined with the strong flavour of the goats cheese
Waffles n baked beans. Strange combination but worked for me! Loved their baked beans wholesome N not too sourish which a lot of home made baked beans turn out. Great COFFEE and waffle with stewed pears work out so well. Corn fritters were corny n less floury which is perfect. Friendly service. Will be back
As I passed Small Block every morning on my way to University, I couldn't help but crave a coffee in their small and quaint outdoor area which always seems to be occupied by friendly local Brunswick-ians enjoying coffee and engaging in animated conversation.
It’s top quality Chai, no fuss, no toppings but a decent froth that invites some raw sugar melting.
The only thing that really let this great little cafe down was one pretentious staff member, whose service (or lack thereof) unfortunately left us feeling a bit put out. But apart from that the overall experience was a pleasant one, and I would definitely return (I have to try those tortillas!).
The Summer Breakfast has been on the menu since BC and is the only thing you should be ordering. Poached eggs, avocado, beetroot relish, spinach and Persian fetta.
Small Block combines flavours carefully, providing plates like the 'summer breakfast' with it's delicious beetroot relish that hits the spot without being overwhelming
Damn good!. After walking around Lygon St looking for breakfast on a Sunday morning we stopped here, and I'm glad we did! Perfect coffees, friendly but unobtrusive service, and beautiful food made with care. We had the summer breakfast (avocado and feta on toast with poached eggs) and the buck rarebit (kind of like welsh rarebit on a bagel-type roll with spinach, poached eggs and chili jam) and both were fantastic. Eggs were poached perfectly without getting water all over the plate (my pet hate!) Would come back again in a flash.
I was a little apprehensive when we first walked in. Once the friendly staff brought out our food however all my concerns were washed away. The food was very well priced and delicious. The stafff, albeit busy, were friendly and helpful. If you didnt know where to look you probably wouldnt even know this place was here. But we will be back again. Im pretty sure we just found our new Sunday morning breakfast haunt
Their steak sandwich is delicious and I highly reccomend it! Food can be a little slow to arrive.
Best breakfast place in Melbourne. I love small block! Have been going there for years and never disappointed. at times there has been a small wait, but always worth the wait. The summer breakfast is just the best breakfast I have ever had, and I also love the ricotta pancakes. I get the same two things every time and hope they are never taken off the menu!
Never been disappointed there. I've been there so many times I just wish they would just change the menu a bit once in awhile.
Lovely staff, good food, reasonable prices. This place would be my pick from the strip between Brunswick Road and Glenlyon. It certainly has the best coffee of the bunch. The food is solid and unpretentious, delivering all the café staples, and the prices seem pegged to 2007 levels. The staff are warm and friendly.
Really great find with good atmosphere. We came here with a voucher and were treated no different to everybody else. The staff were very attentive and friendly and the coffee and food is really nice. Its really warm inside which is great in Winter and they have high chairs and a little table and chairs with toys/books for little ones which makes it easier for mums with bubs. I will definitely be coming back!
Summer breakfast always makes me one happy girl!
The service was really nice , and the food was amazing ! Having brought a deal from scoopon I didn't have much of a expectation however the food was at a decent proportion and I couldn't complain . I would recommend this restaurant to anyone
Huevos Rancheros!. Great breakfasts & good lunch options too! The huevos rancheros are awesome!
Liked it. Relaxed atmosphere, barely anyone in there at the time I went in so service wasn't an issue. Strong tasting coffee was good, baked eggs very tasty and reasonably priced. Staff very relaxed and friendly.
Consistently great over the years. I drop in here a few times each year and am always drooling on whatever I have selected from the menu. Service can be inconsistent but the food is always great.

Had the steak sandwich with betroot aioli....amazing!! Really chilled atmosphere, great place!
Consistency is King. To the review below... mate- It's a cafe not a bistro! They don't need to change their menu regularly. The reason why they don't change it is because it works. There's always the specials board for something different. I have been coming here for years and the food and coffee is consistently good. I tend not to go on the weekends though as it's always busy and naturally the food takes longer to come out. The summer breakfast is my fave. Just add bacon if you're a Carnivore. It's bliss.
Worth a try!. Love Small Block, great coffee, nice consistent food and friendly service. Have been many times and keep going back, my favourite is the Summer Breakfast, although would recommend most things on the menu. Definitely worth trying it out just avoid the weekends if you can as there tends to be a bit of a wait for food and drinks!
Great Stuff. Always good breakfast and Coffee...! consistent and good service! :)
Corn fritters and pancakes!!!! Devilishly delicious and paired with a beautiful coffee, what more can I say? Definitely be back to devour the rest of the menu and sneak a naughty cup cake or two.
Perfectly poached eggs and super friendly staff! This is a good Saturday morning start :)
Best BLAT and corn fritters in Brunton / Fitzcote area. Always friendly service and great coffee here. Love it!
Our favourite breakfast cafe!
My wife and I absolutely love the summer breakfast.
Staff are friendly and service is good.
Such good food ! The summer breakfast is beautiful as well as the pancakes.. The coffee is also consistantly good . If anything , food sometimes take a while but it's always fresh and well done .. Although service can be a little slow there is a friendly relaxed vibe and they are never rude
Our favourite breakfast in Melbourne. This is our favourite place for breakfast in Melbourne. Summer Breakfast is a must. Great coffee, relaxed and very friendly service and atmosphere. When it's busy the wait on food is longer but just have another coffee.
Great coffee, recommend the corn fritters and eggs...
Had the best blueberry bagels I've had

Coffee was great except my second late was slightly over extracted. Food and overall price was very affordable. Love it. Defiantly be back for some mac'b'cheese
Try the pancakes! This place is great! Friendly staff, delicious brunches and great atmosphere+ people watching!
Chai latte was great and their range of teas are diverse. Summer breakfast is a winner.
Fast, fresh, tasty food. Great staff, attentive even when very busy not to mention cute. Definitely be back to sample more of the menu.
Love this place. Good coffee, good service we are always made to feel very welcome whether eating or just in for a leasurely coffee. Plus unlike some other breakfast places kitchen happily makes changes if possible.
If you want amazing food, coffee and customer service then this is a must-see cafe to visit. There are many different items on the menu and they are willing to cater to many different dietary restrictions. I would recommend trying the smashed avocado on gf toast.
Tasty breakfast option and solid coffee - just what u need on a workday commute for a quick hit or even better on the weekend when u can laze away on a second or third coffee
Nice small cafe in East Brunswick. Good food at a very good price, in comparison to a lot of places in Melbourne, would come back again if in the area
A place that focuses on the coffee and the food. Friendly staff. Indoor and some outdoor seating. Food throughout the day is delicious. Can't miss. Interesting murals on the outside.
Cafe tucked away from the main Melbourne sites. Coffee, bread, and brunch options are yuuumy.
A bit patchy when it comes to service and decor however the food was superb.
The waitress delivered 1/2 of the order incorrectly, I suppose that can happen from the best of us.
Decor is a bit dated and ok, it's not a posh restaurant.
The food, cook to perfection. That is rare, all the ingredients were fresh and I polished my plate. The coffee was nice, not too hot and not cold which is a nice change.
Overall a decent grub, I'll go back.
