Review Mandarin Park - Melbourne

Edwar Kartio
This restaurant serves pretty good Chinese food considering there are not many choices of them in South Melbourne. The place is big and the high ceilings it felt even more spacious. The soup is great and the deep fried tofu is pretty average. The black pepper beef is lacking that peppery flavour and watery sauce. Food - 6 Service - 8 Vibe - 8 Price - $$$

Hidden gem ! Really nice food. Dice beef stir fry is very tender and juicy. Steam fish is excellent. Good atmosphere and service. Chef came and chatted with us. Very friendly and gave good recommendations.

Tried out this place"s lunch menu. Had the Fried Rice with Diced Duck which is very tasty and is a large portion. It is definitely a cheap and good value lunch.

Went for the first time last night. The peking duck pancakes, sweet and sour pork & prawns dumplings were amazing. Service was great and will return again. Were a little sceptical due to recent bad review and glad we ignored it now. Thank you.

Worst experience of my life!!! Will never ever return. They missed items off our order. The spicy king prawns had no spice at all was 5 prawns with a powdery gum paste as a sauce that was bland and had no taste, no idea where the spice was. Expensive for serving size. Very disappointing and won't be returning. DO NOT EAT here...

We dropped in on a Tuesday evening. Prompt quick service and delicious clean crisp food. Tyrones recommendations were spot on. We had lobster san choy bao, chicken and sweet corn soup and the honey pepper eye fillet beef and a special fried rice. We couldn't fault it with a good price and an open mind to deviate from our regular chinese cuisine favourites. This restaraunt has just reopened last month after 3months of renovations and is just off Clarendon Street. Theres plenty of seating they have a lunch specials menu and can cater for functions and large groups. We will be back to try more of their menu.

New owners and terrible service! Have been to this restaurant many times and have always been impressed with the service and quality of the food however recently ownership has changed, we ordered at 7:30pm and our food was not received until 9:30pm. The food was however of high standards and with better service would have been a very nice evening

Chinese food done very well. Tasty, well prepared, good price, excellent service. Struggling to fault it. The Pan-Fried Eye Fillet with Balck Pepper and Honey Sauce was exceptional!

Pretty average experience. Not sure why all the positive reviews. The waiters and waitresses barely knew English. The food was not bad but not great either- best dish was the calamari. Wine is ridiculously expensive. We were also seated in a place where we could hear all the goings on of the kitchen and staff- not pleasant. Will not be back.

Ordered take away and thought it was all exceptionally well made - in particular the chicken ribs in egg yolk were great. Nice friendly service on pick up. Price point on dishes slightly higher compared to the cheaper alternative in the area but is a worthwhile trade off for the quality.

Great food and service. My family brought me here and we had peking duck, soft shell crab and beef fillet. The food was really tasting. The staff here was friendly and they all had high quality service skills. We really enjoyed our dinner and would recommend friends to come here for dinner as well.

We went on a quest to locate a new favourite Chinese in the hood that would measure up to NYC standards. After surveying what was available from Port Melbourne to St Kilda and South Melbourne We settled on Mandarin Park as the best of the rest. The owner/manager was cheerful and helpful as were all the staff and the food was delicious and priced for value. Well done MP, you are my #1.  While there was one better, but at a higher price - this place will be our regular place.

Brilliant Hong Kong cuisine. Using the best quality ingredients the chef produces some of the best Chinese I've eaten. Fast efficient service and value for money servings makes for a lip smacking meal. With Chapel Street's Ging now closed this is my favorite traditional Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Do your self a favor and get to the Mandarin Park. New menu about to be launched too! Amazing Cantonese cuisine.

Simply sensational and a real competitor to Lau's Family Kitchen. We were a little surprised at the price point as the menu I saw online was for take-away. Main dishes are about $9 more for eat in. However, it was worth every dollar. To start we tried the spring rolls which we agreed were the best we'd ever had. Delicate, flavours perfectly balanced, and no greasiness whatsoever. The sweet and sour pork ($27) was also declared as "best ever". The sauce was divine and again the fried pieces of pork had no greasiness. Highly recommended and nothing in common with your average sweet and sour pork. The beef with Chinese broccoli and oyster sauce ($28) was tender and the delicate sauce didn't overpower the flavour of the beef. The vegetables were generous and perfectly cooked. Rice stayed hot throughout the meal as it's served in a warmed bowl. Cutlery is shiny and spotless. Servings are generous and we were too full for dessert. Highly recommended for excellent Cantonese cuisine.

The only reason I dined here last night with a group was because the organiser had purchased a Scoopon voucher. <br/><br/>The prices are hefty and the food is average. There was some confusion as to the whereabouts of the voucher and the chef/owner put on a display of disgust, anger and contempt because it could not be located. Never have I encountered such rudeness from "hospitality" staff! <br/><br/>We thought the wait staff misplaced or even threw it away but it turned out it was in the organiser's back pocket the whole time. We apologised for what was an honest mistake. The chef/owner even came out to the street and chided the group for our incompetence!<br/><br/>There is an Asian saying that "If you don't know how to smile, you shouldn't be in business." This guy needs to find a new line of work because his people skills are certainly lacking!

Returned to this beautiful restaurant last Sat night.<br/>The food was amazing the service spot on.<br/>This is our favourite restaurant and can't speak more highly . I've dined at 100's of Chinese restaurants worldwide and I have no hesitation in saying the food here is up there with the best I've ever eaten. My friends think the same. No wonder Mandarin Park is buzzing... Obviously the word is out. Suggest you book to avoid disappointment .<br/> <br/>1st post June 2016<br/>Dined at this restaurant with friends last night .<br/>The food is amazing. The Peking duck is the best in Melbourne. The decor is modern and inviting.<br/>We have dined at Mandarin Park several times and recommend it highly. The staff are friendly and it is just such a pleasurable experience we can't wait to return. Thanks Andrew , go Blues!

Service is appalling girl doesn't even know how to serve the food let alone the beverages. Menu weird and each seafood meal looked and presented exactly same way. Some of the starters ok. Not great overall lacks style and ambience.
I Love Food
We dined here on the weekend with a Scoopon voucher. Deal was a credit to spend on any food & drinks. We had a good night here, the food was very tasty and well presented. We enjoyed pork spring rolls, prawn toast & chicken dumplings for entrée, eye fillet with mandarin sauce, chicken with ginger & spring onion and prawns with Singaporean sweet chilli with vego fried rice for main. My hubby got the banana fritter for dessert and enjoyed it and it was a huge serving. Overall good food and fast tentative service. Our fav was the eye fillet in mandarin sauce, recommend this dish.

Had a nice sweet and sour pork, although it was strange that the main was not accompanied by rice (nor did I see it on the Manu).  The venue could be improved.  The view of the right side of the restaurant when entering is unused tables and storage of boxes - not something that diners want to see.  The most annoying thing was that this was one of those restaurants where the meals were not all served together.  For me the mains should all be served together.  Not with several minutes between each person receiving their food.  And what was more ridiculous was that my dessert came out about a minute after one guest received their mains.

Scoopon deal, 4 pax family dinner on weekend. The food was truly sumptuous! We had lightly battered chicken ribs & king prawns, Kung Po chicken, and crispy egg noodles. Very impressed, will definitely go back, if there's another voucher deal!

Mandarin Park has grown to be a family favourite! The staff are always friendly and knowledgable of the menu which has led us to try new and different foods - we can't get enough of 'grand fathers' chicken!! The fried rice is always delicious and the Peking duck never disappoints. Highly recommend to anyone, we take all our friends and family here. By far the best Asian food in the area!

My family and I have become regulars at this fantastic restaurant. After trying all of the Chinese restaurants in the South Melbourne/Port Melbourne areas, we have finally found a favourite! The staff are lovely, very knowledgeable and always offer great suggestions from the menu. Having travelled abroad regularly, I've eaten a lot of traditional Chinese food and Mandarin Park's is of the same standard (the Chaun-spiced chicken and duck spring rolls are amazing!!!) It's beautiful, fresh and the servings are generous. Thank you for finally bringing some great, traditional Chinese food to our area!
Knowledgable DIner
We went last night and were very disappointed by the rude owner who mocked me and rudely asked for a tip in a joking manner which felt very wrong. The prices are hefty and food often disappoints. One of my worse ever Asian dining experiences. Overall not worth visiting!

Went on a Scoopon voucher - well worth the 45 mins drive to get there during peak hour traffic for a 6:30pm meal.<br/>The food presentation is well done, taste yummy altho servings could be a bit bigger for the price one pays and that's why the score is a 4 ;)<br/>Would go back again if I am over that side of town.
FOOD TRIP
Large, clean and elegant looking restaurant specialising in a range of Asian style dishes. Food is not too bad, but overpriced for the portions you get. Probably wouldn't come back. Cantonese in-house Roast Duck with Plum Sauce $36. Decent flavour, but not as crispy as I would've liked. Overpriced for what it is. Plum sauce was good. 7.5/10

I went to mandarin park last night the food was okay but the service absolutely horrid the waiters don"t know what to do we asked how much the drinks cost they said $3 but when we got the bill it cost $5<br/><br/><br/>

Highly recommend! First class service. Outstanding meals at good value! I had a chefs special - Chilled Mango Sago Cream with Pomelo YUM. It was the best ever I had on earth! The Mango Cream was rich and decent. Finally there is a great Chinese / Cantonese restaurant in South Melbourne area coz it's much much easier to find a parking spot than dinning in the city. Will surely come back again. :)

It is a hidden Gem in south melbourne, just a 5-min drive/tram away from the city. The restaurant is very spacious in a fusion of traditional and modern style. The staff are welcoming and helpful on the menu. As a Hong Kongese, Mandarin Park is definitely one of the best you can encounter in Mlebourne. We have ordered fried little fish, pepper and salt stewed beef and veggies. And the highlight of the night, which is the prawn with tofu, capsicum and eggplant. And you should not miss the dessert. Feeling satisified. If you are after quality Cantonese food, you should not miss this place.

Had dinner last night with 3 friends and 1 that is vegetarian. Absolutely enjoyed by all even our veggie friend was impressed with the quality and choice. I definitely will mark this down and return. 😃

We had also heard the chef here was highly regarded: perhaps not on duty the night we dined. Food is very expensive and quality certainly does not justify the prices. The space is pleasant but very large (too large really) so much so that the staff were running from one end of the restaurant to the other, resulting in a lot of effort expended for little outcomes: they need to consider a more efficient way of directing food orders to the kitchen. Staff were polite, but not outstanding.

As we live in the area, we have driven past this restaurant a number of times. We have seen different owners trying various cuisines from this same premise without luck. When Mandarin Park opened, we observed for a few weeks and thought there were not a lot of patrons. Looking at past reviews, we were unsure. But tonight, we thought we will give our new local Cantonese restaurant a go and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Our family is from Hong Kong and we can testify that the meals were authentic and delicious (much better than a lot of the restaurants in Chinatown). The scallops were fresh and tasty and the rest of the dishes had great flavours and 'wok-air'. We thought the dishes are quite reasonably priced and good proportions. The wait staff were very friendly and helpful. Tonight is not super busy (it is a Tuesday night and holiday season), but they had 4-5 tables. When we spoke to the restaurant manager tonight, he said they haven't done a lot of promotions either (But they will do so next year). Do give this restaurant a try because it is a hidden gem and we reckon it will be super popular in 2016! We will definitely go back!

Been here a few times and each meal has been fabulous. Clean, fresh flavours, well prepared and delicious. Well worth stepping out of your routine for. An undiscovered gem.

I ordered takeaway. Food was excellent quality, beef was very very tender and meal was very tasty. I would definitely go back and eat in next time.

Had a few glasses of wine, a great Chinese restaurant with a simple and clear wine offering!! It was a surprise to have such great choice of wine in a Chinese restaurant! My husband is very picky in wine but he was satisfied!

I have long time no eaten Chinese food, in mandarin park I feel like back to Hong Kong, if i have time must come back eat again..........^_^
Gin
A little odd. Long wait for food. No liquor license. Food was good but not great. Service a bit green (if effusive). Might settle in, but the barn-like dimensions are uninviting.

Very nice restaurant, quite spacious and clean. Ample free parking around after 6.30 PM. Organized a get-together for 22 people, and manager Andrew was happy to cater for us, and arrange a great deal including entree and dessert. <br/><br/>We had the peking duck which was delicious, and everyone still wanted more! Main dishes we enjoyed the most were the saute string beans, honey chicken, pork spare ribs, grandma tofu and the sauté rockling fillets. <br/><br/>The customer service was very polite and Andrew came around every so often to see how we were going with the food and letting us know when the next dishes would arrive. <br/><br/>We had the deep fried ice cream which was yummy as well. Ordered the red bottle of Cab Sav which complemented the meal well. Overall, we had an enjoyable get-together in our own space and everything was well-prepared and food tasted clean (not oily) and well put together. Check it out with friends so you have the opportunity to try more dishes!

Attended a dinner here with friends and ate food in a banquet. It was reasonably priced and the food was great, as was the service. Will definitely be coming here again.

Good quality food with polite and friendly service. A role model Chinese restaurant for Melbourne community. <br/>heard that the chef used to work in Hilton and cooked for officials years ago. quite professional serving.

I've been to this restaurant for lunch and dinner. My favourite is the super tender fillet steak and great Peking duck bao. Quality Cantonese food

Nice atmosphere/ambience. Quality food. Tried the XO prawns and Three Cup Chicken, it's very good if you are after authentic Cantonese cuisine. Highly recommended.
BuonAppetito
We found the food to be a decent quality, although the servings were quite small. The problem with this restaurant is the competition in the area. There's a couple of Asian restaurants a couple of minutes drive away that has comparable or slightly better quality food, normal sized servings(read: slightly bigger servings) and are considerably cheaper.

Wonderful little eatery conveniently located in South Melbourne. The dishes are authentic Chinese food with adequate portions. We highly recommend the delicious Peking Duck and Scallops entrees.its full of flavour and freshness. If you are looking to entertain guests, this is definitely an authentic Chinese restaurant without the noise and congestion of those in the City. Will definitely visit again.

Delicious traditional Cantonese food. Great edition to the neighborhood. Really friendly staff. Great to eat in or take away. Highly recommended!<br/>

I tasted few food, taste good and good presentation compare with lots of Chinese food. Chef cooked by hard, the best banana fritter forever. Fine shin and crips, too yam and forget to take the photo!

A little hidden gem in South Melbourne serving one of the best Cantonese food in Melbourne. We had a great time celebrating mum's 60th Birthday with great food and good company. We are still dreaming of the Large King Island Steam Scallop.

I found out they have changed the management through a recent visit and the food was no longer authentic... big disappointment and probably won't go there again :(<br/><br/>9/9/2015<br/>This newly opened Chinese Restaurant focuses on doing authentic Cantonese cuisine. We were told the chef was working as a chef at the Hong Kong Hilton Hotel, where you would expect some exceptional Cantonese food.<br/>We ordered some steam scallops in xo and ginger and shallot sauce, garlic beef, plum chicken, sweet corn fish and Chinese broccoli. They were all well cooked and the best thing I can taste from this restaurant is, they do not put MSG!<br/>Andrew was very friendly as well as the other staff. I can feel their passion in running a traditional authentic Cantonese cuisine restaurant as there are less and less around the Melbourne CBD area. Will definitely go back!
Dan
The food was delicious and the menu has some special/unique Chinese dishes. My favourite was the Fortuna entree which was not only scrumptious but also very elegantly present. My waiter Ken was friendly and attentive, he seemed very passionate as he took the time to explain in detail how each of our dishes was prepared. Look forward to coming back!
