This place has yummy dumplings and not too overcrowded which means no waiting in a long line like those shops in Chinatown š¤·š»āāļø. We definitely come back and recommend to anyone who feels like dumplings.
Great taste and delicious Dumplings. I would recommend this place for good Asian food and I have been eating here regularly and I really have no complaints!
Excellent dumplings and great value for money. The fried rice and bok choy were great too. Fantastic Xiao long bao. Service was a bit confused and my meal took a long time to come, I think it might have been forgotten. I would come again but maybe not with a big group.
My new favorite place for dumplings! XLB were soupy, and their pan fried dumplings are crispy on the outside. Fast service, even during the busy lunch hours. Been eating here regularly and I really have no complaints!
Will recommend this place to anyone š
Tried this place out a few weeks ago and actually enjoyed there food.
Ordered the
ā¢ Handmade Shanghai fried mini buns
ā¢ Beef in black pepper sauce
Both dishes was delicious. I enjoyed the Beef as it was quite tender and full of player.
The Buns were delicious but I felt they needed a bit more time to cook as the bunās were a bit hard to chew in some areas. Apart from that we received wonderful service and actually went back again to try some prawn dumplings and Beef with noodle dish.
Lovely experience
Ordered for the first time and service was prompt. The dumplings were delicious and ready when I got there. The only criticism I have is that they donāt have eftpos. Had to go to an ATM to withdrawal money to pay for lunch.

An oldie but definitely a goodie! The dumplings here never cease to be the most delicious dumplings youāll come across. Always served quickly and they provide complementary Chinese tea - which is great. Price is average for dumplings in CBD but not over priced
Perfectly steamed handmade Pork Xiao Long Bao is why so many people I know make the journey from Docklands up to this King Street eatery. The service is also quite good in comparison to the typical Chinese abruptness I am familiar with in the box hill area to. The Xiao Long Bao also comes in chicken/prawn crab/pork or vegetarian if thatās what you are after. Fried pork dumplings are sold by the 15 so are good for sharing. Really busy and fast paced so get here early if you need tables for a bigger group or be prepared to wait or be disappointed. Have found the couples tables churn fairly quickly
The dumplings are delicious and authentic. Always comes out hot and fresh.
Staff not very friendly. Slow service.
I come here for the food not the atmosphere.
Every Monday we get our dumplings from here and they are delicious! Defiantly recommend to dumpling lovers.
The staff are very friendly and quick service.
The dumplings here are pretty good and are relatively cheap. Customer service is seriously lacking though, friendly enough but once you sit down they have a habit of forgetting about you... Other than that, cheap and cheerful!
Ordered the Ma Po Tofu on rice, so much yum in one plate. Very relaxed take-away restaurant, no bells or whistles, it is what it is. Don't expect great service because besides bringing you food, everything else you have to do yourself, even get your own cutlery. Staff are friendly enough and I loved the food.
The place is tiny, the seating is tight and cramped and aside from getting shown to your seat and having your order taken, there's not much else in terms of service. However, it does not matter as the dumplings are delicious and cheap and every time i've visited the food has always been consistent. It's a regular haunt with the work colleagues and would definitely recommend for quick and cheap.
Hats off to the service here, all the staff are super duper efficient and courteous so thanks for making us feel welcomed!Ā
We got in and got showed a table straight away, even though it was football season and a game just ended - there were fans everywhere and half of the patrons were in jerseys!
We got the steamed pork dumplings, absolutely delightful. The chilli sauce was spot on as well, I have nothing to criticise at all.
We also got the sweet and sour soup which came out a bit later but the waiter assured us that it was on its way so that was nice. It was lovely as well in the winter cold.
My only criticism is the self serve cutlery station - you have to wade to the back of the room to help yourself with cutlery and cups. My cup which I filled up with hot tea had a leak on the bottom so my whole meal was also me trying to stop the tea from spilling out completely by stuffing it with (thankfully on the table) tissue paper.
Too busy in the peak time, dont expect great service but food is good with nice cold beer. Really cheap food if you are sharing with others. Go early to get seat if you are too many of you.
Fantastic place if you love your dumplings! Get there early though as you will struggle to get a table by 12.30pm. Ā Dumplings are fresh and very filling!
Quick lunch with work colleagues, wasn't busy yet so service was quick. Friendly staff.
Lovely food. Will be back again. Had fried and steamed dumplings.
āYou are my sword. Your love is its own rewardā
Shanghai Master Dumpling is an extremely hectic lunch venue. It is that way for a reason. It may not look like much, but they pump out quality morsels for hungry CBDers. As the clock strikes 12 tables start to get populated and 15-20 minutes later the place is full. Itās a bit cramped, but thatās OK. Take away orders also increase the traffic, but thatās OK. Let The Dear Luncher tell you whatās not *just* OK - the first item on the menu. Itās much better than OK, itās outstanding. The handmade pork boiled dumplings are up there with the best Your Dear Luncher has ever consumed. The Shanghai fried mini buns, filled with pork, shrimp and spring onion were also great. Excellent bun-casing, and delightful innards. However, the most interesting and peculiar dish Your Dear Luncher sampled that day was the wontons in chilli oil with peanut and sesame butter sauce. This was rather different and unique, providing a really enjoyable peanut explosion with every mouthful. The only disappointing aspect of the most recent dining experience Your Dear Luncher had here, was a strong waft of tobacco smoke coming from out the back ā where there was probably an open door. The Dear Luncher is a reformed smoker, so smelling that during the consumption of lunch was a letdown. This was the only blemish on an otherwise solid dining experience. Economical, fast, and tasty. DĆ©cor and surrounds are a little bit tired but on the whole OK. The Dear Luncher gives Shanghai Master Dumpling his seal of approval.
Packed restaurant at lunchtime. Busy but really efficient waitstaff, I guess there used to this kind of mayhem lol
The food was tasty, I had wonton and noodle soup which was good but the noodles were pretty thick n dry.
And I was lucky because when I went to pay the bloke at the till walked away and the I paid the waiter. I say lucky because the bloke at the till was coughing and blowing his nose etc and I was thinking nooooo I don't wanna pay him hahaha
It all worked out in the end haha
Good dumpling offerings along King St, with nary a queue (something to consider if you are hungry, and cannot be bothered to queue at the more famous/popular dumpling joints near Chinatown). Their dumplings are actually rather delicious and do not shy away in comparison with the more popular joints, despite the other recent low rated reviews, which I fail to comprehend. Also order their rice cakes (a Shanghai dish) as it is full of flavour (they can skimp a little on the sesame oil though!). Well worth a visit.
Checked out an oldie but goodie, Shanghai Master Dumpling tonight and as usual it lived up to its reputation when it came to the dumpling department.
Tonight we ordered a serving of the Fried chicken and prawn dumplings $9.8, chicken and prawn Xiao Long Bao $10.8, some Chinese broccoli with Oyster sauce $11.5, seafood fried noodle $11.5 and a side bowl of steamed rice to really get some Asian style in there. Everything but the Fried noodles was spot on as half (all) the seafood tasted like cardboard with the texture to suit. Sauce and noodle was good but that seafood was just plain ew! Return!
The decor of this place is simple, low budget and feels like it should be in Footscray but the important thing is that the dumplings are good, the service and hospitality is on point and you don't feel ripped off. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find today!
The food was so delicious, i personally enjoyed the crab & pork dumplings and also the egg custard buns!! yum yum yum. The only down side is the restaurant itself was pretty narrow and the customer service was just a bit rude sometimes
Super yummy dumplings and high quality dishes. Highly recommended it as it's probably one of the best dumplings I've had in Melbourne. Lunch time can be really busy but definitely worth the wait.

Casual lunch place.
Try this peanut sauce sesame oil dumplings, the flavour quite special and i like the flavour of sesame and peanut taste, but this dish can be quite heavy because of its oil, but still worth a try, suggest to share.
The Shanghai stir fried noodle, taste ok but quite oily, like that they have some cut Chinese mushroom pieces, added flavour to it, suggest to share as well.
The seaweed and dried shrimp soup, very normal, close to clear soup, i thought the Chinese description on the menu has eggs, but didn't see any, not sure if they forgot or simply the dish presented as is.

Lunch time always crowded, advise to go just before 12pm or after 2pm, otherwise you might need to wait for a table.
Shredded meat with sweet and chillies sauce and capsicum, this can be served dry or in soup.
Braised beef noodle soup, i find the beef not soft enough, should braised a little longer. The flavour of the soup quite light, the version of the braised beef is slightly different from my expectation.
Love the handmade noodle texture very much, very crunchy. Also quite like the chilli they served on each table, feel like home made chilli rather than the bottled type.
It is what it is. Cheap and cheerful self service lunch dumplings. No complaints about dumplings. Do expect the norm chinese customer service which is unpredictable hit and miss type.
Damm good dumplings. Good, cheap, fast and delicious dumplings in the CBD. Nice selection of dumplings, very noisy and crowded, but worth it for the dumplings. Service is a little eratic, but won't stop me going back.
Busy Lunch Fave!. This place is always busy during the week at lunch and for a reason - their dumplings are cheap, and tasty! Most recently I had 15 pan fried pork for $9 - bargain! Perfectly cooked - and left me full and satisfied!
Quick, cheap & tasty. This was a great find!
Great no nonsense dumplings and noodles. Cheap food, simple no frills decore and a bonus they sell Tsingtao beer in house.
First time I've encountered a Shanghai dumpling place in Melbourne that rivals some of the great ones back home in Sydney.
Food is fantastic, service is quick and the price is cheap. I have eaten here many times and never been disappointed.
Great dumplings. Just get the dumplings... Simply delicious. However, just like most others, don't expect to get a good table service.
A little bit of gold in the city. This is a FANTASTIC place down this end of the city. If you want to eat authentic, real Shanghai style food this is the only place. Word of advice for the non-asian eaters, ask the staff for some recommendations; their English may not be great but they know the food and they will help you sort out the gems from the space fillers on the menu.
Must try - Xiao Long Bao, Hot & sour soup, White chicken (bony and tasty, the way it's suppose to be)
Such a busy place at lunchtime! I wasn't able to get a table so ordered 8 Pork Xiao Long Bao take-away. The dumplings are quite cheap here (8 pieces for $9.90) and are a decent size. It did take about 10 minutes to prepare (which is fair enough, because the place is packed). Very tasty dumplings with lots of soup in them. I know I will be back whenever I get more Lunchtime Dumpling cravings. If you want to eat there, rather than take away, highly recommend you are there by 12pm.

Great noodles great dumplings very surprised! The girl serving needs some customer service training but we will be back
Not the best dumpling or noodle place in melbourne but I like it. The noodle tasted better than average restaurant and the dumplings were fried or steamed properly. The bad side though, this place is not really clean so dont be surprised ifyou find a hair or two. Still i visit this restaurant quite often and would likw to recommend its spicy pork noodle.
Less cramp then shanghai street dumpling, service is better, xiao long bao very nice but lacking ginger taste.
Late night plate of chicken and prawn dumplings at this cheapo joint hit precisely the right spot for this dumpling aficionado. Most pleased.
Yum!. Heard about this restaurant by word of mouth, with it being the latest craze for lunch at my workplace. It definately delivered!
Came here with a friend at 12.00 on the dot - make sure you don't come any later though, as this place gets packed VERY quickly. We ordered the traditional XLB and the pan friend chicken and pork dumplings. Although the dumplings were very tasty, I still wouldn't rate them as high as the dumplings at Hutongs, but still definately hits the cravings spot!
Another downside are the size of the tables. We only ordered two servings and our table was too full to fit our bowls.
10 meals. Can't really go wrong with cheap but yummy dumplings. My favourites (which I order every single time) are the fried pork dumplings and the siao long bao. They're not that delicate but for the price, it's a definite win. You have to get there no later than 1205 for lunch because it does get packed VERY quickly.
Tooooo good!!. We're hobbit-sized and somehow managed to eat five (very large sized) dishes... just because they tasted sooooooo good. Better than Shanghai Street Dumpling, and no queues. Wish they were byo, but we'll be back anyway!
Suprisingly great food... Fast service and friendly staff. Dumplings are a treat with great value and large servings.
Great dumplings on the bottem end of the CBD. Considering my complete hatred of Shanghai Street Dumpling, I'm glad that we've got another xiao long bao place closer to work. Shanghai Master Dumpling never disappoint: service is fast and the food is decent and cheap.
Cheap and filling! A must for a quick bite to eat. We usually get take away, as the place is noisy and not the prettiest place to eat in.
Best Dumplings in Melbourne. We are regulars at a few Dumpling houses in Box Hill and Chinatown and absolutely loved these dumplings! This restaurant was recommended by a friend and I'm really happy we gave it a go, rather than head to our standard dumpling house. We had a few of the chefs suggestions, great flavours, fast service and really cheap!! Friendly owners helped us leave with a smile we couldn't shake.
Best dumplings in the CBD. The servings are generous, good quality ingredients and the staff are a lot friendlier than a lot of the other dumpling joints in Melbourne. The chicken&prawn are the best.
Tremendous value...because the dumplings are deliciously magnificent, the servings ample, and the owner very passionate about what he and his team are doing. I can overeat for less that $10. The place is rammed during lunch hour so go early. At night, you'll have no problems getting a seat. Recommend the fried pork dumplings, the Shanghai Fried Mini Buns (oh, baby!), and the super Pork & Wonton Soup. But go for the dumplings.
Takes me back to memories eating in back streets of China. Straight to the point don't care service and similar respect for the food, being largely low quality but more of it, at a reasonable price. Great place for cheap and nasty Chinese food - the specialty xiao long bao is average but will be great after a few beers at the pub. See you there
The dumplings and noodles are delicious, much better than many other dumpling restaurants in the city. Did not like the filling in the vegetarian dumplings though.
Slightly smaller than other cheap dumpling places in Chinatown, but tastes delicious. The skin is perfectly soft, not too starchy, dry or mushy.
Fantastic dumplings, my partner and I ate there for the first time on Sunday. We tried the Fried pork dumplings, wontons in chili oil with peanut and sesame butter sauce and dumplings in chili oil soup. The food was delicious and very filling, each plate of dumplings was $ 8.50 and you got 15 dumplings on each plate. Great food at a great price. Owner was very friendly.
If you want to eat in at this place, I would suggest getting there by 12pm. However they do run a pretty efficient take-away service so that is always a good option
Although this restaurantās name sounds like a major golf tournament, there are no double-bogeys as far as Iām concerned. My xiaolongbao, pork soup dumplings (eight pieces for $8.80), arrived hot and fresh in a large bamboo steamer and they were mad-hot delicious.
Best Dumplings in Melbourne. Quick Service, Cheap Prices, Yummy Dumplings with the Best fillings. 10/10
Reasonably priced, tasty and super fast! Delish vegan options available, more vegan dumpling varieties would be awesome, will be back never the less.
Great dumpling and beef noodle. Relatively fast service but being Chinese restaurant don't expect great service :p
Their food makes me wanna vommit....
yeah you read that right. but lets make this clear. their food makes me wanna vommit because its CHEAP but soooooo GOOD. Im already full but still want some more. I just cant stop myself. lol. their chilli paste is to die for. I love it. the restaurant is also bigger than those at China town. its not that busy so there are no waiting time whenever I visit the place.
I love their pan fried for dumplings! no corriander! uggh I hate corriander so their dumplings are perfect for me!
From the outside you may not go in - but that would be a mistake. Dumplings are sublime, very real atmosphere and very reasonably priced. Donāt judge this place by the look, the food is epic. Only down point was the toilet facilities which were very sub par. 5 stars because the food was that good
