Came here with no expectations. But surprisingly food was great. Fish was very crispy. Scallops were very nice too. If it’s a larger portion, it’d be even better.
Good food...not too greasy and nice people. Calamari is tender. Good decor. Located at the south end of Errol street, the hub of north melbourne village, and close to the city.
This place is the perfect local takeaway. Fish is delicious, cheeseburgers spot on and chips the perfect thickness and crunchy. Haven't had a meal that doesn't delight and it's great value for money.
A very hip fish n chip shop I was looking really forward to this. As I had just moved into the local area and I had this craving for deep fried cuisine, I went walk-a-about. I stumbled upon salt. And through the window a gorgeous brunette took my eye. I went in no hesitation. Who was leading the charge here my heart Or my stomach? Both were on heat.
I ordered the dinner pack. I was actually impressed with the freshness of the chips! Great large thick cut chips too just the way I like. Good job! And the fish that batter was really clean and crisp. Perfectly cooked. Great serving for the price! And a bonus potato cake? Waaaattt!! The gorgeous brunette! It was a sign she liked me perhaps? Sneaky girl. Nothing says I think you're cute than a sneaky extra potato cake wanting to go home with me. I'm looking forward to coming back here many more times.
Love living local!
Cheers!
Love that I can call this my local fish and chip shop! Fried flake is fantastic, chips and potato cakes are thick and delicious. Tiny bit expensive but you are paying for quality and quantity!
Good lord that Spicy Fish Souvlaki is ammmaaaahhhhzing. Also one of the best potato cakes I've had in my life. And by one I mean one a day pretty much every day help I'm turning into a potato. Seriously the potato cakes are great
Great that you can have a wine or beer when waiting for the order! The fish tacos hit the spot, salt & pepper calamari is always tender and the potato gems with cheese & gravy are wicked.
Ordered a cheeseburger and chips yet unlike the name, they didn't add any SALT to the chips. They didn't even ask if I wanted any or direct me to a place where I could add my own so I'm not sure what their process is. You'd assume they'd be all over that since it is the business's name. Anyway the burger was nice and the chips were good, once I added salt haha.
Every neighbourhood had its local fish and chip shop but the North Melbourne area has been a bit lacking for good options, until now. From the team behind the popular local Town Hall Hotel, Salt brings quality seafood to bustling Errol Street. Previously another fish and chip shop, Salt has completely renovated the interior with a sweeping tiled counter and bar seating surrounding the kitchen area and tables along the wall on one side. The timber furnishings and hanging lighting is almost reminiscent of a cafe. Outdoor communal benches complete the overall concept of a fish and chip shop that you can go to sit down and hang out at.
One of my go to spots for a fish n chip fix. Large portions, tasty and quick. Sadly they didn't have sweet potato chips today which is what I was most looking forward too. They have probably the best sweet potato chips I've had. Flake was good and the scallops are enormous, but very oil this visit.
Burgers are delicious and great value! Amazing variety, we've only tried 6 burgers but can't wait to try them all! Our favourite is the panko crumb chicken burger.
I have no idea where the negative reviews are coming from, I actually signed up to Zomato just to leave a review for Salt. Burgers are spot on, especially for a fish and chips place. Cheese burger and decent serve of chips is only $10.50. The calamari is great, the fish is great and all decent sized serves. I live 4 minutes away and without fail each time my order's been ready within 10 minutes. I think one person here mentioned he waited an hour. I could understand 20-30 if they were busy, but clearly the guy was on acid/mushrooms and his time perception went completely out the window.
Always tasty!
This place knows how to grill fish! And don't even get me started on their burgers! I recommend getting both if you're ever here! Sad it's not my local anymore but I'm definitely going to make the trip.
Good ~$10 burgers. Everything else is pricey for average fish and chips.

If not, my favourite fish & chup shop in town, clean simplistic decor, sporting some of the best burgers in Melbourne.
The Fish Pack and Chilli Burger are my staples, they've even swapped the regular chups for the Sweet Potato variety for free numerous times.
There's a myriad of salt variations to season your chups with but you shouldn't get too overscrupulous, the pink salt is sufficient.
I tend to avoid the busy times though, as seating is limited and also the applied pressure could compromise the quality.
Overall, just a nice place to complacently, watch the peeps of North Melbs pass by.
An extensive burger, fish and salad menu. Tried the panko chicken burger and cheeseburger so far, both are delicious. Unfettered access to a wide range of condiments and salts.
Excellent old school fish and chips. This local is so very glad that the old greasy awful fish shop closed down and renovated to this, with friendly owners and excellent old style fish and chips. Terrific potato cakes as well thank goodness as I'm fussy about my potato cakes, they have to crunch. Looking forward to a next visit to try something new.
After finally trying out Salt, I must say I was impressed! The food was delicious and quick to be served. I ordered the soft shell crab burger which was great, as it's something a little bit different to your regular beef or chicken burger! Loved all the different types of salts which were available as well which were interesting to try and great conversation starters! Must try!!
Such a good experience! They were super busy, but we ordered and were told 10 minutes. We came back 10 minutes later to two delicious meals. Lovely, bright-eyed service, heavenly potato and sweet potato chips and so many different types of gourmet salt! Wish fish and chips didn't make you fat. This place rocks.
Great fresh seafood. Can take a while when really busy but it's worth it. I loved the soft shell crab burger
