Very yummy food! Servings are filling and very generous and prices are affordable as well. Would highly recommend for a simple dinner with friends and family
Great little place at a nice spot in Docklands close to the Yarra river bank. Very friendly and polite service.
We ordered quite a few things but the stand out dishes were the Fried Chicken Laksa and the Prawn Dumplings. The dumpling were in fact one of the best we have had in Melbourne.
Went back there a second time recently and were equally happy again.
I got ayam kapitan to take away for lunch. It tasted very flavourful and the portion size was sufficiently generous. It could’ve been even better if the rice was coconut rice. The service was really good - the guy was super welcoming and friendly. I look forward to trying out some of the other dishes.
First of all, I was very impressed by the service here. It was attentive, helpful and efficient. The lady saw that I was in a hurry on my lunch break and made sure everything was done on time. The menu is not massive but it's quite diverse with interesting items and your usual suspects. I had a roti canai and lobak to eat in and took a nasi goreng takeaway. My roti was a bit thicker than I expected (I tend to always compare to Mamak's roti which is my favourite) and it was a bit burned on one side but it tasted nice and it wasn't hard. The chickpea and lentil dhal that came with it was actually sweet but again fragrant and tasty. Different to anything I have had before. It was my first time having lobak and I enjoyed it. Full of flavours and a good portion albeit a bit too salty in some parts. My nasi goreng was delicious as well. Good portions, reasonable prices. All in all, I was happy with my meals.
This place has one of the best curry laksa i’ve ever tasted in my life! Went here twice ordered the curry laksa with fried chicken twice in a row it was absolutely delicious both time!
I tried the nasi rendang as well and loved it!
If i ever go back to melbourne this place will certainly in my mind!
Yum yum yum 😋!!!!
Thursday night quick meal - had the Laska (chicken) also came with eggplant. Cold night but the laska certainly wasn’t and it hit the spot without being stupid hot. Service was great 👍 I’ll go back for seconds.
Good small place close to DFO docklands. I had the curry laksa and it was amazing. Good flavours and a good amount of spices. Price is good for what you get.
My laksa I had was by far the best laksa I ever had! I keep craving it. My friend didn’t like her noodles but I’m still giving a 5 cos the laksa was that good!
Hidden gem on the western side of Docklands. Very reasonably priced great Nonya food. This was complemented by warm friendly services. Definitely will be back.
Love the food there. Try nasi lemak , love the rice with coconut. Fried chicken was fried the way i ate when I was young . Well done . Recommend my friends there
Amazing food and excellent friendly service. Had the Sambal Calamari and Roti bread. Delicious, fresh and piping hot. Staff were attentive without being pushy. Coming back!
Delicious Malaysian Nyonya food hidden on the south side of docklands, across the river from just South Wharf/Melbourne exhibition centre. Carries the usual Malaysian delights: nasi lemak, laksa nasi goreng but also some interesting main dishes like ayam buah keluak, otak otak, babi asam.
Service was a tad slow (3 man show on the day), and a large walk in group just after us.
Will be going back to taste more
I came here after reading Nitash37 's review and had a decent browse through the menu. Everything seemed tempting but in the end opted for the fried chicken laksa which would be the most authentic and familiar dish to decide on the rating.
The staff are extremely friendly. A little wait and there it came, the fried chicken laksa. The colour and contrast with the blue bowl was pleasing to the eye. Soup is authentic with a slightly sweeter taste to the usual. Chicken was quite salty I have to say, eggplant and crackers were nice and what surprised me was they used a thicker rice noodle which I haven't seen before. The dry basil leafs certainly makes it smell more pleasing.
Next was the milk tea which I read off the blackboard as new items. The colour was not as dark as your traditional teh tarik, it seemed more like lipton but the sweetness I simply couldn't figure out. It was just nice... hard to explain but could tell full cream milk was used to top it up as it's creamy and the slight sweetness.
Also not to mention you get a card, for every 5 visits you get a free light meal on your 6th.
I shall be back to try the rest. It's the best Malaysian place on this side of town :)
Love that it is off the path, covers all major nyonya dishes, music was cool. We tried the beef rendang with coconut rice and wiped it off! I can’t wait to try others on the menu. Coming back for sure.
A nice atmosphere and unique restaurant/bar settings that's close to the waterside but hidden away from other restaurants on the opposite end. Thumbs up to the lovely staff and service. Food took some time to arrive but servings was big and reasonably priced. The lobak was tasty but a bit oily however the sweet chilli sauce helped mask the oil. The mee goreng is made with instant noodles and was bland for us, in contrast, the khong bak was flavoursome and goes well with the coconut rice.
Authentic peranakan food which we've found hard to find in Melbourne, in particular the Ayam Buah Keluak (which I'd recommend). Also tasty were the sambal long beans, the Maggie goreng and Ayam Kapitan. When we had dinner there, the beef rendang was slightly burnt and was the main letdown in an otherwise impressive line up of dishes. As a small cafe with minimal staff (we spied one chef who also took your order, and manned the cash register!) - expect a bit of a wait for your food, particularly at busy times.
Really authentic and unpretentious Malaysian (Nyonya) food. Had two pork braises, shrimp pancakes, and the acar awak (Nyonya lightly pickled vegetable salad). Pancakes a little bit overdone (a bit dark) but the rest was great. Highlights were the ayam buah keluak (special black nut pork braise) which was warm and balanced; the acar awak was also crisp and satisfying.
Really quiet here on a Friday night—doesn't deserve to be so. Staff were probably doing too many things at once (cooking, taking orders, waiting, processing payments) but that's probably because it's such a small place. But to a soundtrack of 40s and 50s Chinese divas playing over the speakers and you've got a nice casual place to eat out.
So glad to have discovered this little gem in South Wharf. It is cosy and brightly lit, with a heater at the entrance. Not many people dining in for dinner, that could be due to the dreadful cold weather or that they mainly do deliveries. Either way, the food was superb. It didn't take long for the food to come, and service was cheerful and friendly. For starter we had the Lobak which came piping hot and crispy with sweet chilli sauce. It served as a good appetizer. My favourite dish was the Ayam Buah Keluak (Nyonya chicken stew) with the rich aroma of herbs and spices. The chicken was so tender that it fell right off the bone. Absolutely delicious. Also had the Khong Bak (caramelized soy sauce based pork belly) which was on the sweeter side. The sauce went well with rice. Overall a very satisfying meal and we will definitely be back to try other dishes.
Great food and service. Went with a groupon deal and it was a good value for money. Authentic Malaysian food and reasonably priced. Will go back even without deals.
Ducked into this place for lunch on a weekday. It was quite busy with office workers.
We had the Ayam Buah Keluak (Nyonya Chicken Stew) and Babi Assam (slow cooked pork) with a coconut rice and a brown rice. Plenty of food, and the meat were flavorsome, although would have been nice if there is even just a little bit of veggies mixed in the dish.
Services was prompt and friendly.
Excellent service! The staff was very accomodating, we had a baby with us and their toilet didn't have a changing table but the staff offered a solution. To top it off! They had great flavourful food. Beef rendang, green beans were delicious!
Visited this cute little place after a long day on Queen's birthday. Ordered the dumplings, 5 spice fried chicken, spring rolls and chicken laksa. The food was served after 45min but was totally worth it. Everything was delicious, very light on the pocket and the staff was courteous and friendly. Definitely going back here!
Celebrated my birthday here a few months ago and really enjoyed their brunch. Food is excellent quality and meticulously prepared. Used Liven App and got my $50 reward. So satisfying to your heart's content. Best place to dine
Bababoi Kitchen & Bar is a Malaysian Nyonya restaurant located in Docklands, overlooking the riverside. Presenting modern Nyonyan cuisine through indigenous ingredients and Chinese cooking techniques, Bababoi offers a cultural experience unlike any other.
Staff were attentive, happy and friendly.
Sambal beans: good, but not as spicy as I was hoping.
Beef Rendang: mouth wateringly good sauce and beef that just melted in your mouth.
Roti Cannai: AMAZING! Wish it was bigger!
Babi Assam: delicious sauce and meat cooked to perfection.
Ayam Buah Keluak: not my favourite of the above but still great.
Good selection of alcoholic beverages, loved that they serve a brown rice as a side.
What a nice little place. Came in on Groupon deal yet service rendered are as if we are in fine dining restaurant. Food: Great, Service: Fantastic. I wish more people ahow support to this little establishment by giving it a visit. Kudos to the staff there.
Me and my colleague went to this restaurant in the typical cold Melbourne winter day and we didn't get disappointed at all. I made the booking a few days ago using Groupon tool and it's pretty simple. The salad is very tasty and the serving of fried chickens is huge. We picked the Little creature which is part of the deal and ordered two extra on our own to go with this large dish...
I have to say it's a good deal. It would be even better if it's Summer time. The place is bit hard to find. But other than that, not really much to complain.
This is my favourite restaurant already. They serve authentic nyonya food in an casual industrial setting. Reasonable price with generous portion is the reason for the repeat visiting. The menu isn't big but good enough to choose for the favourite as it been balanced for the different choice. My usual recommendation for friend would be ayam kapitan and beef rendang but my usual pick would be the ayam buah keluak. The taste is always been great as their rempah is all house made and this is how they outshine other Malaysian restaurant. I had everything in the menu already and mostly are done by themselves from scratch. I also appreciate their consistency and commitment to customer in terms of deliver quality food despite any situation. Here I would say this is the only nyonya restaurant which deliver the true nyonya delights.
Small but lovely restro - it gave me a nice impression when the staff greeted us warmly at the entrance. Dishes are full-flavours with fragrance of herbs and spices (which you can taste and enjoy). Price is reasonable for a CBD establishment. The owner has mentioned their roti is made freshly to order, definitely worthy of trying.
Simple and tasty Malaysian cuisine. Great customer service. However was looking forward to otsk otak but they ran out and it was only 7pm. But service was great, sparkling water was flat so they waved the cost.
Nothing fancy but they do a great job if you're looking for a simple tasty dinner out. Prices are reasonable.
Happened to walk by the neighbour with a groaning stomach and decided to give this place a go, it turned up to be surprisingly good for my taste bud. I enjoyed the fried fish with the tangy sauce. The serving was generous and it filled me up. Will definitely revisit the place with the misses.
One of the few restaurants in Melbourne to serve Peranakan or Nyonya cuisine, Bababoi stands out from the crowd with offerings that really pack a flavour punch. The Nyonya cuisine is a Malaysian cuisine which combines Chinese, Malay and other influences into a unique blend resulting in dishes that are tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal.

Best lobak, shrimp fritter (ha che) and lollipop chicken in Melbourne. Best lobak, shrimp fritter (ha che) and lollipop chicken I have ever tried in Melbourne. Best nyonya food one must ever try. The taste is very Malaysian authentic and the owner is really nice. Great food and environment. I will be back.
Babi Assam is the best there. Ayam Buah kelak is just the paste not actual buah kelak in a stew. Fried rice and nasi Lemak were good too. Esp the sambal. Roti with the chickpea curry also decent and not too spicy.
Had an absolutely amazing dinner here !
The food was flawless - and ive had my fair share of good Malaysian food. I am not kidding, the servings sizes the night we came were ginormous - easily double what you would be expecting at the price point. The service was also really good, and I am already planning my next visit here :)
Authentic peranakan food here! The fantastic taste really hits home, especially the buah keluak and roti canai! The portions were huge, and reasonably priced as well
The service was super great and friendly :) will definitely come again whenever we need our peranakan food fix!
