Great local pub atmosphere, friendly staff, fabulous food and a good wine selection. We eat here often as the meals are always amazing and inexpensive. The every day menu is good, the daily specials are always interesting and varied. It is cosy by the fire in winter and very pleasant sitting outside in the warmer months.
I’m not sure why this place dosent get better reviews but I’m happy to keep it a quiet neighbourhood secret. The food is exceptional with Ben in the kitchen and barely passable on his day off. Lucky he’s there most days. Andrea behind the counter is an absolute gem. Dining area is nice and cosy
Love there food ,the variety is quiet good. They have the yummiest burgers and stakes. I believe you can order anything from the menu and you wouldn't be disappointed. Would love going back to this place.
One of the best "locals" in the Northern suburbs. Food consistently good, quite a bit better than your standard pub grub. Service can be slow at times, but there's always time for ages drinks and watch Andrea in action. She is a human dynamo. They must keep her at all costs!
Hidden behind the Rathdowne Street regulars is the Brandon Hotel. A cute little pub, with friendly staff that has a great menu and also very on trend specials. Chicken Parma ticked all the boxes. The arancini were also perfection with the aioli. Beautiful crisp balls or delicious!!! The others at the table had the roast of the day which was pork and served with roast veggies. The pan friend tickling with fennel salad was also a hit! We will be back for sure!!!
Cosy neighbourhood pub where we enjoyed a delicious Sunday lunch. The Vegetarian enjoyed fresh haloumi tacos and crispy potato skins with a Japanese twist, while I attempted pork ribs with smoked Mac & cheese and slaw. It nearly defeated me but my trusty zip lock bag ensures none will go to waste! Awesome friendly service, and while we used a voucher, wouldn't hesitate to come back at full price.
Just down Lee Street, around the corner from San Remo Ballroom it can be hard to find but it's worth the effort. Split into two sections a front bar and a restaurant it's an odd layout. Almost the front bar is too small and the restaurant too big. That aside they have included seating outside which is a good idea. The food is where it hits the mark. Cheap parma deal on a Saturday. Yes! A Saturday which makes a nice change from the mid week specials. During the week they still have other specials if your after a mid week feed. The food is outstanding (especially considering the price). Little things like board games and no pokies gives this pub real character.
A lovely pub in the middle of Carlton North, comfortable and a good selection of beer, wine and entertainment. I had pork belly, saganaki, salad a sparkling and rose, friend had lamb cutlets and a glass of wine. Used the entertainment book so got a $30 discount. Bill $78. Great value.
Possibly the best pub north side. Great selection of beer and even better selection of wine. Food is amazing - I had the lamb cutlets and they were incredibly tasty. Best bit of all is the set out - there's the front bar where you can have a drink and a meal and get the real local pub vibe. Then there's the dining room where there's table service, fire place, classic furniture and great vibe. And then there's the beer garden where you can sit or play darts. The Brandon offers board games and cards and every table in the front bar, a nice touch. I hands down say best pub in Carlton, suits everyone's needs
Lovely ambience in this little hotel tucked away in the back streets of Carlton. Ask for a seat in the little alcove area of the dining room. The publican is very welcoming and genuinely interested that you enjoy your meal. We both had the steak (on the day, the cut was scotch fillet) - one serve with beer battered chips, the other with mash - both with porcini sauce and salad. The sauce was amazing and plentiful. Chips were crunchy and hot, mash was smooth and well seasoned. Steaks were tough in parts but really well flavoured and it didn't detract from the enjoyment. Additionally, the steaks were cooked exactly as ordered - one perfectly medium, the other perfectly medium-rare. We visited on the entertainment book but would gladly visit again paying full price. The Brandon Hotel seems to be the local's hang out leading a really nice casual relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a great meal.
I love a good hidden gem, and this pub has done such a good job of being a hidden gem that I had no idea it was there until a few weeks ago. Tucked away in the back streets of Carlton North, the Brandon Hotel is a stones throw from big name spots like the Great Northern Hotel or The Dan O’Connell, the Brandon is a spot for the locals.
Excellent. Excellent. Excellent.. The food here is absolutely amazing, great combination of traditional pub food with slight gastronomic modifications without going too overboard. Great alcohol selection, not overly priced and when combined with the excellent service and dining environment, will certainly be back :)
Friendly, SPACIOUS, and great food. We experienced very friendly service, really great food, and very decent prices for the type of stuff they are creating/serving; gourmet tasting/ artfully presented, and a reasonable amount of it on the plate. What was really nice was that this was all delivered in conjunction with a spacious/uncluttered floor-space/ atmosphere... generally we steer-clear of the CBD/Lygon st. etc., because in those locations patrons tend to be 'packed in like sardines'... If you enjoy a more relaxed, less cramped atmosphere while you dine, you will probably like this joint. Eating out is of course a very subjective thing, but personally, I could not fault these guys. If you check out their menu in advance, and go there and order something you like the sound of, I doubt you will be disappointed. BTW, for anyone who has never tried truffles, but is curious, they do an AWESOME salmon/asparagus/truffle dish for under $30. I'd never tried truffles before, and now I realise what all the fuss is about! Five stars from us, absolutely, on all fronts!
Pub with a homely feel. Came here and was unexpectedly surprised. After having read some reviews I wasn't expecting much, but it was great! The Brandon is a pub with a very homely feel, we sat next to the fireplace, service was great and food was good. I ordered a Parma which was yum. My partner ordered a steak that was cooked well, chose the mash and mushroom sauce to go with it and he enjoyed it. Only thing was he said the steak had too much fat and grisly bits but other than that the food was above average for a pub. We also got to play darts out in the courtyard which was a bonus!
Inner Suburban Delight. We took family from Interstate to Brandon Hotel, it was a great experience for all of us.... Brandon Hotel is a hidden delight in Carlton North the staff were very friendly & attentive.....The menu was really interesting, great to have something different on the menu. The food was absolutely magnificent & beautifully presented, complements to the Chef..... It is well worth a visit to this beautiful Inner suburban Delight......you will not be disappointed.....
Hidden hideaway. I can imagine the workers swilling here or the footy crowds of the last century drinking here, filling the bar and beer garden.
Now, a local, a gem, hard to find, around from the newry, once near the old by gone fenwyck and not too far from the fitzroy arms etc.
Parking is ok, interior is your normal inner city pub, gas log fire, small beer garden, comfortable seating for meals and friendly un fussed and attentive service.
the beer on tap is crisp and cold and the atmosphere is relaxing. i went one night and they were filming an episode of offspring so went the next for a meal.
look, the food is nothing to write home about , nor is it anything to complain about.
if one wants an atmosphere as described and is in the area with friends, do not hesitate to drop in. good value meals, i had the steak and it was ok, not great, but good.
but again, it is unpretentious and traditional, clean and tidy, nooks and crannies do get lost in and does not pretend to be a upmarket pub, you get what you pay for here, with great beer and service, and a fondness as you leave with a full belly, looking forward to coming again in the winter!!!

One of those occasions when 'like' or 'don't like' is not enough distinction. Pros: food (overall), and that rare restaurant where you can talk without yelling. Cons: underwhelming and slow service (had to wait 15 minutes to be offered a drink – in a pub!), quite a few menu items and specials unavailable. We've been twice and would probably go again, but only occasionally.
Good produce, great result. Am just new to this world of on line reviews - Had a Sunday lunch at the Brandon Hotel in the bar with 3 friends yesterday. The lass at the bar was prompt and helpful. It was mentioned that the current menu is fairly new but not having eaten at this hotel before I can't really comment on that. Upon the meals being served, the quality of the produce was clear to see ranging from a couple of the entree tasters through to the mains. Good flavours and some clever dishes that didn't try and be too clever. All in all, high quality meals that I expect would be reliable upon each visit.
Lunch menu offered a good selection, not your typical pub fare, little bit more upmarket but with a couple of old favs like parma/ fish n chips. Service was excellent and friendly. Food was out pretty quick and tasted freshly prepared and nicely seasoned. Better than most pubs in the area.
This was my first time dining at The Brandon Hotel & I was extremely happy with my Meal. I had the Steak & it was cooked perfectly to how I ordered it. The staff were very efficient & friendly & the atmosphere was relaxed. I plan to go back again soon & recommend this establishment.
Great local. Having recently moved into the area, I thought I would check out Brandon Hotel and wow, what a great pub! The food was just what you want in your local pub. My friend and I shared a few small plates: lamb cutlets and the soft shell crab taco were our favourites but tuna and samosas were also great.
The atmosphere is very laid back and the staff were super friendly. And they have lots of card and board games available in the front bar. All in all I think I found a perfect new local!
You could be forgiven for walking straight passed the Brandon. Nothing particularly special to look at, but looks can be deceiving. The food coming off the pass here is nothing less than first class, as is the service. Highly recommended and well worth your hard earned. The Brandon also features in the Entertainment book making it exceptional value.
Hidden Gem!. A new find for me, very nice quiet place away from the traffic and chaos of Carlton. Well priced, great quality food. Pleasant dinning area with an open fire place and attentive, helpful staff. 5/5
Friendly staff who were attentive yet probably needed some extra hands due to a function being on! Food was good, nothing amazing or out of the ordinary but suited our plans for a late boozy lunch. Seemed to accommodate large groups well so worth considering if you're planning an event.
Good, honest food. The service and meals were a true delight. This is not my local, but I will definitely be back!
We have been to the Brandon a few times now and we have always very happy with the food and drink. We had lunch with friends this afternoon the food and service couldn’t have been better. The young women who was serving us was amazing!! and extremely attentive, the food and drinks where also top notch This place is a hidden gem. Keep up the great work guys and give the lady a pay rise 😬😂 👍
Love this quaint little spot with delicious yummy parma! Super friendly staff and unpretentious food, bonus points for the sports playing on TV for a great atmosphere 👌 👍 defo try this place out!!
We had a fabulous birthday lunch for my niece last month at the Brandon Hotel. I cannot fault the food or service - it was sensational. Everyone enjoyed their meal and all dietary requirements were gracefully accommodated. So many people told me they had a great time and had eaten the best pub meal they'd had in ages! And well done to the kitchen for getting all the mains out at the same time - not an easy feat given the numbers!
Thank you to Jed and the team for a wonderful day.
Sports bar in the front and warm, comfortable dining area in the back - complete with comfortable chairs and tables; chesterfield sofas; a cupboard with games for children; and a small outdoor courtyard. The food is excellent, the staff are lovely, and they have live music on Sunday afternoons. All in all, a wonderful place to spend an afternoon or an evening.
This is my all time favorite pub. The food is always consistently good. One of the best burgers in Melbourne. Their approach to Covid has been fantastic. They are fastidious and have made great efforts to keep their patrons and staff safe from Covid. Well done thanks for providing such a relaxed but safe environment. See you again soon.
We had an issue with a gluten free meal, they took it in their stride while super busy on a Wednesday, our food was especially delicious and the hospitality en pointe!
Great local pub with amazing food. The quality of house wines is well above any normal pub.
Great name for a pub as wel
